Apple MacBook Air MC233LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (OLD VERSION)

I'm a PC, but I'm also a Mac. A Macbook Air (MBA) to be exact. I'm very much into design so it just made sense. I first considered something like the Dell Adamo, Latitude Z or the HP ENVY13, But the Dells were heavily under-powered processor-wise. The HP was crazy powerful, but heftier than I would have liked. The Latitude's Euro design gave the MBA's design a run for it money, but it starts at over two grand and you'll easily knock on $2500 with the bells and whistles, Yikes! The HP ENVY 13 is very powerful and the only ultra-portable with the i7 processor. But for what I'll be using this for, the mobility and price is more important to me. The Adamo seemed to match the price and features of the Macbook Air best, but finding that the design, feature and price pretty much a draw (I personally thought the MBA had a very small edge on Design), I settled on the MBA because of the fact that I can run Windows 7 as well as Mac OS X(which I also use for different purposes)and the better build quality. I have to say, the unibody design really makes the thing feel as if it was carved from one piece of aluminum. There's minimal flex to speak of. Closed, it just feels so nice in your hands.

The 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor is a lot better than the 1.2 and 1.4 that are available in the Dells; more than enough for my usage. This might have been a bit meek had I not already had an Intel Core 2 Quad Desktop computer at home. This also made HP ENVY pointless.

The screen is more than adequate and much better than a netbook. Since it's so light, it really can go anywhere a netbook can. The nice Keyboard and trackpad was also refreshing.

The Solid State Drive is also nice, but after some usage, I really don't find them all that different from a standard HD, perhaps a bit faster, but not that noticeable. It certainly is cooler and less noisy. Some users have complained about it getting a bit warm, but I'm thinking they've got an HD instead of an SSD.

And now for the few CONs:

No optical drive since I won't be needing this too often it's not a big deal. I already have an external Blu-Ray Drive that I used to install everything. Once that was done, I can only image using it for an occasion Blu-Ray/DVD movie, but even this will be rare, unless I'm in a hotel room somewhere and bore out of my mind.

Connectivity:

No Ethernet, big deal! It's all about wireless!

Weird Mini Display port also not a big deal since I don't imaging connecting an external monitor to this much.

Only one USB This one, I admit, is pretty significant. It was a bit of hassle to swap USB devices a bit, but again, I only use multiple devices a handful of times (mainly a USB DJ Console Mixer and an external USB HD containing the music I want to mix). I got a little griffin USB "Splitter" which was nothing more than a very tiny USB Hub, but it did have some trouble getting enough power to the HD from this one USB port, so I did have to add a USB power cable to the mix (the audio was clipping heavily during mixing and transition). So keep that in mind if you're planning to daisy-chain three hard drives, a soda cooler and a reading light to the USB portjust don't. It works fine with the majority of other (low powered) USB devices.

RAM Here's the other big CON! While 2GB of RAM will probably be ok for now, but I would have loved having the option of adding more. I have 8GB on my desktop and I actually use it (photo and video editing, media center functions, terminal services, etc.)! While I'm not doing much of that (maybe a little Photoshoping) on this thing, all it takes is that killer application that requires at least 4GB of RAM that I can't use that will drive me nuts!

I have a first generation Macbook Pro from work and I always loved the design of it. This takes things to the next level. I'm primarily a Windows user, and this seems to work a bit more seamlessly with Windows than the Macbook Pro(although with the latest drivers and software updates for bootcamp from apple, it got better). It's kinda odd that I went with an Mac to run Windows, but it was a calculated choice. Had I been looking for a full-function laptop, it would have likely been an HP or Dell.

The computer came in the shape it was described with a small indentation on the bottom. Not very noticeable. Everything seems in working condition although the battery came in need of replacing but I suppose that's inevitable with an older laptop.

the apple air is great, even this older hard drive model (the new ones run flash memory virtual discs, this one has a standard hard disc)...but...it reached me with a bad ding in a corner of the case cover, still works ok, but won't close 100%, and, frankly, it looks like 6/10 more than 9/10...my 2 cts.

I love my MBA. I travel a lot and the weight was my primary concern. This machine is great it does everything I need it to do. Because the computing world is mostly in the cloud these days all you really need is a device to connect wireless or wire up with the included USB LAN adapter. I travel internationally so skype is my primary means of communication. The camera and microphone are great. The MBA is the Ipad with a camera. If you travel and don't want to lug a lot of weight get an MBA

I absolutely love the MacAir it's very light, has many more features than a PC, it's faster, everyday I find new things that I'm impressed with. My only complaint is the brief manual does not make going from a PC to a Mac very easy. I have used computers for many years but I am not a whiz with computers. I have not gone through the tutorials on line which I may have to do. I purchased a book that claimed it explained everything you needed to know about converting from a PC to a Mac very disappointed. I like to "read" from a manual/book how to do something specific. That's the only reason for a 4 Star.

Dell Precision M6300 17.3" Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz, 160GB Hard Drive, 4096Mb RAM, DVD/CDRW

I already own a M6300, so I'm aware that it actually has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9500 2.60 GHz processor, which is what mine arrived with and not with the 2.20 GHz listed.

It arrived with only 3 GB of RAM and not with the 4 GB listed.

The built-in wireless device doesn't have software for Windows 7 and wouldn't establish a connection with my wireless modem/router, so I installed an external one that does work.

The overall condition of the laptop case is very good and has very few scuffs and scratches.

Considering what I paid for this laptop, I can't really complain about the issues that it has.

Hopefully, it'll be as reliable as my first one.

In the computer I've got, almost everything is better than the description:

one of the best video adapters available for this model

a key or two on the keyboard doesn't function well, but with such a good computer who cares.

I purchased my laptop for business use. I am a Web developer, and this laptop suites me very well. I needed something not too small so that I could enjoy some size, but also not to big so I can travel from workplaces and offices with it. I am more than satisfied with what I got so here is what I have to say.

When I purchased it I got it on sale for $100 off the regular price, which made me happy. I wanted to go to x64 for quite a while and now I am finally caught up with technology! Hooray!

I have been using this since purchase during Dec 2009. It is now the end of June so that's about 7 months. I got it primarily because it is a great machine and I do not need a graphics card, which is the one thing it lacks, because I don't play video games on it. It has been stellar for all the softare I need to run such as Photoshop CS4, Illustrator CS4, Eclispe SVN, etc... It is very quick and has not slowed down due to the number of websites and hundreds of thousands of files from them now on the machine either.

All in all I a more than pleased. For me, this is a perfect fit. For those who want to play video games other than Pogo or Flash: my advice is to buy a different machine with a NVIDIA or ATI dedicated graphics chip. It will cost more but will play the games much much better.

For all others that like to surf the web, install software, play simple games or web games, watch movies, listen to music, etc... this machine would be a perfect fit!

I received this laptop for Christmas in 2009, this became my main computer and I am typing this review over 2 years later on it. The machine is great my only complaint currently is that the battery doesn't seem to hold a charge for very long now (could be age and usage) and the connection where the charger plugs in doesn't always work (so I'll have to jiggle it a little to make sure it's in) But I LOVE this computer and will not be giving it up at this point!

I got this computer for a birthday present. It ran all my programs great (I am a music producer so I use a lot of CPU/RAM intensive programs) and it stayed pretty quick. But at about the 11 month mark, things started to go all wrong. First off, the left mouse button started to come loose, which was not a major problem. It was under warranty, so I took it to Best Buy and had it fixed. Back in a 2 weeks (as they had to ship it off), no problem. After that, however, everything went haywire. I went to boot up the laptop 2 days after it returned. No dice. So I took it back to the store. They claimed it was a bad charger and tried to fool me with that. Turns out the motherboard was fried, and even to this day (I still have it) it will only boot up intermittently. Apparently this is a pretty common problem. Stay away from this laptop. Get a Dell.

I bought this to replace an existing laptop and decided to give this upgraded model a try. I received it sooner than expected and it's been great since I first turned it on. The HD screen upgrade is well worth it and makes streaming videos, movie trailers, etc. a much more enjoyable experience. It boots up unbelievably quickly, less than 30 seconds for a full shut down and reboot. I also went with the extended life battery and it lasted me 8+ hours with normal use, (surfing, e-mails, a few You Tube videos) before getting any kind of low battery warning. I really don't have anything negative to say about this purchase.

I love this computer. It is lightning fast and I love Windows 8. Anyone who uses a smart phone will not have any problem using it. And the desktop screen is very similar to the old windows. I love the very quick start up and shut down.

It does have a digital memory card reader and the fingerprint reader.

It's a great computer and I'm very happy I chose this one.

Had to return the initial laptop because of dead pixel(s). RMA was fast, painless and free. Unfortunately, the replacement also had the same problembut not as obviousso we kept it. After removing all the trial junk that comes with a new laptop, am very happy with the purchase and price. Screen is huge, widescreen and bright. Would def buy againbut watch out for those dead pixels!!

This is one versatile machine. I needed a strong and rugged unit to run my business finances from a variety of locations. At the same time, I wanted it to help with my leisure pursuit of music composition and performance. I use the pad feature primarily for music display using Music Reader during piano performances (I'm putting my whole library on it!). When placed on a music rack the weight is not so much an issue for me as for some other reviewers.. Music composition with the stylus on the pad works much easier than with a mouse and keyboard. The fans are very quiet if they run at all, and the SSD makes bootup and wakeup very fast.

With my business, I do a lot of remote access, so the Windows 7 pro provides a smooth connection. The i7 processor easily handles the half-dozen programs I run simultaneously. I'm especially pleased with how easily this unit switches between the various monitors I connect to extend my desktop at different locations. The abundance of jacks and control buttons provides an advantage over ultrabooks if you depend on such connectors and controls like I do.

If there are negatives for me, they would be the speaker placement pointing out the front below the keyboard. If you use it as a true laptop, the sound disappears into your lap. It would also be nice if it had a USB 3 port. Still, while it might not be the best for everybody, for me this machine is perfect!

The HP EliteBook came with Windows 7 Pro but I immediately upgraded to Windows 8 Pro with no problems. The tablet is just what my husband wanted.

eMachines E725-4520 Laptop Win7 Pentium T4400 2.2G 15.6″ 3GB Ram 250GB WiFi 6-cell battery D

I bought this about two weeks ago when it was on sale for under three hundred bucks. I have been using a Macbook Pro for the last 4 years, which is great but which is also my wife's computer. With the kids and I also trying to use her computer I figured it was time to pony up for a second laptop.

Pluses:

1. Price

2. functions just fine for internet, watching DVDs, You Tube, Itunes, etc. no noticable difference in quality of images or streaming from my high end Mac.

3. Costs less than a netbook, has a dvd player/recorder.

4. Battery life is actually very good 4+ hours so far for regular surfing. video knows it down to about 3 hours.

Fairly solid feel to it for being a hunk of plastic

Back has all sorts of access panels for people that want to change out the hard drive or add more RAM

My Age of Mythology game works just fine on it.

Minuses:

#1 gripe no HDMI port. Bummer. HAs some cheesy aavi port but I haven't bothered to figure out if I can convert that to HDMI. Whoops on their part, but then agin, this thing cost me less than most netbooks.

Speakers are lousy. If you mess with the EQ and SRS Wow you can get it to an aceptable level, but out of the box they sound like they are tin cans. Fine with headphones.

Keyboard is okay does not have a high quality feel to it. easier to type mistakes than on my Mac.

Windows 7 is...... nothing more than XP with a couple of the bugs fixed and an interface that makes it harder to find things if you are used to XP or 2000.

Boot of programs is a bit slow. I think this could be a WIndows issue more than a hardware issue.

Ovberall works just fine for a cheap laptop. don't need to pay twice as much if all you do is surf the net and watch TV on it.

There was a certain retailer who was selling this eMachines laptop for just under $300, and at that price, this laptop is an excellent deal. Much above that price and you should probably look elsewhere.

As others have said, the display is excellent very bright. The keyboard is OK not great, a bit "spongy" but not bad. The speakers are awful, perhaps the worst I've ever heard; attaching a pair of cheap USB-powered speakers makes a big difference when you use it at home.

The CPU is a standard 2.2GHZ Pentium (Dual Core) T4400, which is a sweet budget CPU (a budget version of the now-being-phased-out Core 2 Duo CPU). It's actually quite a fast CPU for basic stuff. The thing DOES NOT get hot (compare that to the AMD-based laptops) beyond a little warm on the bottom.

The two biggest downsides (beyond the speakers): only two USB ports and no webcam (even the Acer version of this laptop that has a webcam curiously has no built-in microphone). So as I said, for the price I paid, I can put up with it.

One little annoyance I've noticed lately: The touchpad is a bit wider than I'm used to, and I seem to rub the left side of the touchpad with my left hand too often, causing the mouse pointer to jump. This seems like a curious design feature of this particular model; when typing on other 15.6" laptops of this same era, I don't have this problem.

RAM is DDR3 despite what official specs say. Easy to upgrade. The wireless card is easy to upgrade as well you can upgrade it to an Intel 5100 "Draft-N" card that is an excellent wireless card for $10-$15 on ebay, very worth doing. You can use either a half-height or full-height mini-PCI wireless card in the slot, I've used both. SATA hard drive is easy to swap as well I've already done that.

You can run XP on this thing too if you really want to but you must first upgrade the BIOS to at least 3.06 (so you have to boot up Windows 7 for that most likely). Then you have to set the BIOS SATA option to "IDE" not "AHCI" and then XP can boot easily (you'll need drivers from Acer on the Emachines support page for this laptop). I did have trouble with Acer's supplied XP driver for the included Broadcom wireless card it froze the laptop every time I enabled the card, but as I have since replaced the Broadcom card with an Intel card, I have no problems with wireless in either Windows 7 or XP.

inexpensive for its power and speed. good looking. large brilliant screen with wonderful colors.

key board and internal speakers are an issue. poor speakers and a poor keyboard.

buyers may wish to experiment with external speakers and external keyboard if you are going to be using the keyboard a lot for text entry.

the computer itself is quite powerful for its cost, no heat, no noise, no processor or fan noise or vibration.

looks to be solid build. not the lightest laptop, but solidly built.also WIN 7 does have some glitches related to compatibility and proprietary issues with other Microsoft software,

Microsoft and WIN 7 does not like Google Chrome, for example, some issues with MS software downloads with Chrome, with Win 7. however,

XP computers are hard to get now unfortunately.

if you need to do serious text entry and require a really good keyboard, I would suggest that you spend some time with this keyboard before buying this computer. make sure it will work for you.

do not buy it sight unseen and untested. if the keyboard and internal speakers are not important to you, this laptop might work for you.

despite this laptops high processor power for the price, and other good points, IF you require an excellent keyboard and/or speakers with normal volume, I would not recommend this laptop.

I like the computer but when it comes to warranty be prepared to get screwed they want you to buy a box bubble wrap ship it fed ex or ups cant use orignal box because you will lose it. I am now in the process of having the computer replaced with a new one under louisiana lemon law. emachines was gateway now is owned by acer i hate companies that dont want honor warrantys and screw over consumers

I love this laptop!! I am self employed and i am able to use it for work and play.. it has never failed me.. it is durable and has even survived a couple of fumbles.. (accidental drops)

it has great speed and graphics.. its a great buy!! my only complaint is that the speakers worked great at first and then a few months later they were not as loud but thats not a major issue for me because i have mini speakers that i use when im not traveling.. Im not sure if thats an issue that others have experienced or if its just mine. i recommend this laptop to students and small business owners especially, but its great for anyone who wants quality without spending a fortune...

Hp Pavilion Dv8000 Notebook

This item was misrepresented in the ad (I have screen shots to prove that) and the item was poorly packed and the seller hasn't even inquired about the damage and denies the fraudulent advertising. On top of that, I had to take the chance and pay up front before receiving the item but he wants the item back before paying me back. If I had to pay first then so should he. Also, he won't offer a partial refund to cover the damages or the repairs needed because of the fraudulent advertising. He claims others were aware of the uncommon problems (cracked screen and noisy fan) but they were NOT shown in the information I was presented with when I went to the web page he used to advertise this item. I will never trust anything this person says.

All was perfect, on time, it is a good looking machine

-The screen is beautiful, very bright and good color reproduction.

-Wi-fi signal is strong and I haven't experienced dropped connection.

-I haven't used the touchpad that long because I always use a mouse but I tested and it works better that others I've used.

-The keyboard is accurate and it feels nice to the touch, the backlight is soft, you can barely see it with lights on. I wish it was brighter.

-There's a little to none noise fan, it gets a little hot on the bottom.

-Speakers sound surprisingly good for such a thin machine.

Sony VAIO VGN-CR320E/R 14.1-inch Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 Processor, 2 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Dr

I bought the Sony Vaio CR320E/W after weeks of research. It is light, fast, and stylish (and cheap?). I needed something portable for college so I went with the 14" and I love it. The screen is really bright and glossy. The laptop itself weighs nothing compared to my dad's 15" Dell laptop. The build quality is very sturdy and the gloss white finish doesn't show fingerprints as bad as one would think. It does not have a latch to keep it closed but rather it relies on the tension of the spring. The spring works fine and has never been an issue. The Core2Duo processor is great for all around use. It isn't the fastest dual-core out there, but it is more than enough to get the job done for the average consumer. The bluetooth worked great and instantly connected to my phone. The camera is one of the neatest features. Besides taking regular photos and videos, it also has mac-like effects that can distort the image in weird ways and do random flips and rotations of the image. Another mac-like thing was the keyboard. The keyboard has a slight gap in between each key and they are all rounded a little. The keys have the just right amount of "roughness" to make good contact with your fingers. The speakers on this laptop are not extraordinarily load but they are not weak by any means. I said it was cheap because the older version of this laptop (vgn-cr220e/w) which doesn't have bluetooth and a slower/smaller hard drive is actually more expensive on amazon.com than this one. I personally saved a little more money and picked this laptop up from Best Buy after instant rebate.

There were 3 cons that I found with this laptop. First of all, it comes loaded with Sony bloatware programs. I spent the first 2-3 hours with this laptop just uninstalling the software. All they do is slow down the computer and most of them are very repetitive when compared to Windows programs (Sony Home Video Creator v. Windows Movie Maker). The other issue with this laptop was the battery life. Even though it is advertised as 2-4.5 hours, I just wanted to bring that up because it typically gets around 3-4 hours, which is a little bit too short for me. The third issue was that it comes with a weak graphics card. It is fine for general use, but it probably would have a little difficulty keeping up with the newest games. All in all, this vaio is a great buy.

I can't tell you how happy I was about three weeks ago when I got this Gorgeous Pink Sony Vaio as a gift! Let's just put aside that my favorite color is PINK and this is just the most beautiful pearly pink color I have ever seen. It's like an accessory. Which is the main reason you buy a colored laptop isn't it?

This is a critical part of my work. I'm a paralegal and I needed somthing light but sturdy to take back and forth with me to work. I went with the 14.1" screen because it is big enough to see exactly what I need. Bright and colorful as well. I don't use the computer for much but work and documents, so I'm not sure how it stacks up with things like game play, etc. But I can tell you that it is quick (maybe not the fastest laptop ever) enough for the everyday consumer! This computer also comes in a variety of high gloss colors at great prices!

It took me all of two minutes to have the Vaio up and running wirelessly online! (and I'm definitely NOT a computer savvy person) But it's very easy to set-up. The instructions are clear and effortless! It's all that I need and more. It's quick, runs my necessary programs, music interface and Microsoft Office Professional without a problem. I've owned other Vaios and have loved them all as well. *This one is my very favorite hands down.

It has a lot of room on the hard drive, is super quick, gorgeous color and user friendly. I'm not the most computer literate person, but this comptuter makes it easy to understand.

It's compact and light. Perfect Keyboard, I absolutely love it! I also bought the Sony case for protection and it matches perfectly and keeps the computer padded, protected and easy to carry around!

There are a ton of programs preinstalled on it though. Some I found useful and some I don't need at all. The virus program is great, along with Microsoft Professional and a few others. Mostly I love that it has everything I need on it and more in one tiny, compact, sturdy, and gorgeous machine. What I see so far is wonderful and I know that I'll have many years to come with this notebook!

For me, I couldn't ask for more! You'll have to decide what you need it for, but if you're looking for a machine that does what most everyone needs it for in a compact, light, yet sturdy form, I can't see why you wouldn't love this user-friendly product. Sony is a name I've grown to know and love and would buy their products again and again!

Perfect for students in both high school and college and for adults that use it as a second computer or one to travel with. Not only does it download and play my music, but it also burns cd/dvds, which is a plus! I hope this has been of some help in your decision making, I know I don't know a whole lot about "tech talk", but I do use it every day and couldn't be without it!

My excitment of owning a vaio all went into the drain when I got first hand experience of its performance. In general its processing speed is worse than a pentium 3. And I dont have anything saved on my hard drive since I mostly use it for internet browsing. Everytime I switch on my computer I wonder what will go wrong in the processing today. e.g. internet browsers take ages to open, or if you type its takes ages for the text to appear. I have tried everything possible.

Sony is unwilling to admit that they have a defective model. I would not recommend anyone to buy this. HP, IBM or Dell will provide you with better processing speed. Otherwise you are buying a model claiming to be a core 2 duo and you are getting pentium 2 or 3 at best performance. So if this laptop cant take internet browsing... then if you do more stuff I am not sure how it will take.. it may just crash. So BEWARE!!

After a few weeks of contemplation I settled on this as my first laptop for use when I start grad school in the fall. However, I've gotten much more than I expected. The graphics are AWESOME!! It's light and quiet, the keys aren't as hard to use as I'd expected after years of desktop use...I could go on and on : )

There are a few consthere's a few more programs loaded on it than I think I really need and like most VAIOs it gets a bit hot but generally I have no complaints!!

I would advise that if you want something like this to get the newer model which is only $100 morethe CR420...it's processor is 2.1 GHz and it comes with 3GB of RAM....commit to Sony and enjoy : )

I buy these for work use. Really. Why? Because at this price, they're close to disposable. With a Core i5 or i7, these are as fast as their "business class" peers, at a fraction of the cost. Sure, they're less solid feeling than some of the business class systems, but again, so what? Build strength does not seem to have any relation to the extent of punishment users give them, and these are tough enough (I say this after deploying something like 18 of them). My company has a laptop culture, both in an effort to encourage users to take their systems to meetings, etc. as well as to mitigate the frequent power outages in our building. Our regular users (not "power users" or developers, etc.) get these and external monitors which are nicely driven with the HDMI port. It would be nice if Dell gave them Gigabit Ethernet, but alas, they are 100MBps. Again, it's serviceable and no one has expressed any dissatisfaction with them. Go aheadpoint ant laugh at me, but my amortized costs are exceptional.

The 17 inch screen is a great size and the picture is clear as a bell! I use it for business and rate it 5 stars. It does not get hot when in use...the quiet fan comes on as needed. This laptop has a lot of memory and I recommend it highly. The battery life could be better but other than that I like it very much !

Compaq CQ56-219WM Presario Laptop 15.6" LED display / 2.20GHz Celeron Processor / 2GB DDR2 RAM / 250GB HDD / Lightscribe DVD±R/RW / 802.11 b/g/n Wifi / 6 Cell / Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) I was somewhat hesitant to purchase this laptop, but aside from the negative reviews here, other site's reviewers were much more postive so I took the plunge and have been quite pleased with its performance.

Pros: Very easy setup . . . especially if you go wireless. I disabled the built in mouse pad and went with a wireless mouse, and use a wireless internet connection. The computer automatically picks up the signals and you're ready to go. Took maybe 5 minutes altogether.

Some folks have complained about its speed, but I found that the Norton Anti-virus Program that comes with it was the problem. After completely removing it from the computer and installing Microsoft Security Essentials . . . it became lightning fast, especially on the internet.

Cons: Just one: I couldn't get my printer to work on it, but decided to go wireless with a printer and got a new one.

All in all, this laptop does all that my old XP desktop did, but much faster and without all the wires dangling and protruding from it. No need for a monitor screen with its wires; got the wireless mouse and wireless printer. The only wire that I have inserted is the AC cord to recharge the battery. It's lightweight, portable and fast.

Some people complain that it's no good for games and such because it's too slow. Maybe it is too slow for some games. I wouldn't know because I don't play them. I use it for emailing, surfing the web, writing and research. It doesn't come with a webcam or other bells and whistles. It's a basic laptop for basic computing needs. It comes with Microsoft Office Word and Excel, but not outlook express. You can upgrade to get the additional programs for a price.

I've used computers for years and this is my first laptop. If you're looking for a good, solid, basic, fast laptop without the frills and thrills, you can't go wrong with this one.

Seems to be a great preformace laptop for simple use. That is what it was purchased for. The size and weight are the normal for most Windows 7 bring a lot of features that windows XP did not have.

Edit: My fan's already gone out at the 3.5 month mark. Bad soldering or circuit board leads.

Edit again: I've had it on a cooler ever since, and now at the 13 month mark the hard drive just crapped out. At least it didn't do that during my stats grad class, but I'm annoyed that it did this a day after I finally got Virtual DJ and the Emu 0204 running flawlessly by doing nothing more than creating a new user account (who knew cluttered/default Windows 7 profiles could so foul up ASIO?). I am hoping it's the motherboard, since the fan also had an issue as stated previously, but I'm not hopeful. Still, I purchased a 2.5" SATA to USB HD enclosure to test the internal hard drive with something else to be sure. If it checks out, I may buy another CQ56 and move it into that one. I'm not optimistic or even looking forward to buying another one of these if that is the case, but I don't want to go through the LONG process of installing all my stuff again. In retrospect, I was not being too hard on this computer.

Yet another edit: It was the HD. Darn. I hardly ever took this thing anywhere and it looks mint. Turns out the backup and clone features never exactly worked properly. Perhaps I should have cloned or copied the onboard HP backup partition? Windows 7 has a clone/ghost feature built in, yet even after creating a properly-sized Fat32 partition (required apparently in the wizard) on an external drive, that still never worked. I hoped it would run in the background after turning it on in Windows in control panel with my 3TB Seagate USB drive, but no. It looks like the CQ56 cannot either boot-from or clone-to an external USB drive, which is a problem considering it has only one HD slot internally.

Furthermore, the wifi adapter is not automatically recognized and plug-and-play upon a new Windows 7 installation. That means if you're on wifi, you won't be able to ever get on the net until you either go to another computer or connect to a hard line. HP really should have included a backup DVD.

Their forums are also full of people with dead fans and hard drives.

I'm changing it to 1-star and will never buy HP again.

It's amazing how much you can get now for $300. I won't deny that, but this is, after all, a single core Celeron processor without even hyperthreading. Windows 64 also needs 3GB before it starts to have breathing room to do good, stable work. So I upgraded the ram to 4GB total and it helps, but the lack of at least one more core terribly limits multitasking ability. I feel you ought to spend at least $500 bucks for a laptop at the lowest acceptable "end" still. You get exponentially more computer. With only integrated graphics, one core, and slow hard drives, even with double the ram it's just not capable of what a modern machine should do at minimum. With 4GB it can handle single tasks well if you're patient. Don't expect a snappy, crisp interface, though. The screen is also lacking in contrast range substantially. Are you getting ripped off at this price? Nope. It's durable and, aside from the crummy stiff mouse buttons, does the basics. But jumping up in price gives you more than buying two of these would. I recommend the following minimum:

4GB RAM

Multicore CPU of some type (Intel seems the most compatible)

7200rpm hard drives

Dedicated graphics chip and VRAM; not just because of the horsepower needs, but some software literally malfunctions from integrated graphics

Firewire or Expresscard slot... not just USB connectors

HDMI port

I got this laptop about a month ago and so far, I'm really impressed with it. The computer runs a little hot on the lap but I got a lap desk so problem solved. The speakers are Altec Lansing and they boost out some great sound for movies or music, the fan isn't that noisy and I don't even realize when it comes on. I'm in college and when I use the computer in class I have to sit next to an outlet because to be 100% honest with you, the battery won't make a 4 hour class, maybe 3 tops with note taking. The battery and the heat are the only reasons I gave this 4 stars. It is light, great screen (may be too reflective for some) and with 4GB DDR3 memory this baby is fast! I did a lot of research before I purchased this computer, weight, battery length, and memory were my major concerns and I can function with a 3 hr battery. This is perfect for carrying to class; it's small enough and light enough to take just about anywhere. You can lock the finger pad deal with just two taps of your finger so that you don't end up accidentally writing in the middle of your paper. The keys are nice and easy to type with. I also write screenplays so I write a lot on it and I have never noticed any bad about the key board. I'm not a computer guy, i just want to get the most for my money and that's why I bought the HP G4. I've done all the research I could do on laptops and for an awesome price this is the best you can get for under $500. Trust me, I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

Was searching everywhere for a laptop. After finding the one i wanted, best buy sold out of it when i went to get it. After doing some more searching online between mainly amazon and best buy i was able to find this hp g4-1016dx. i really liked the 14'' screen when compared to those 15'' screens i was looking at for toshiba laptops. they were just too wide of a computer, coming with the number pad. i was pretty skeptical because of the deal best buy had going on for these which was $350. when i compared to to other $500 laptops it was better in almost every category except i believe it had a little less hard drive but this was enough for me. after seeing it in the store i bought it. when i got it i was extremely surprised with the speakers, they kick ass. i would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for a laptop.

I bought this at Best Buy for $349.99, but $429.99 is still a great price if BB is not available. It has a great setup for such a low price, the processor has more umph than a typical budget laptop, 4GB of ram!, and a nice 320gb hard drive. Fan is not real loud, laptop doesn't get real hot (haven't maxed it out yet though), screen is nice and bright. Just bought it today but so far it seems to be an execellent buy, especially for those shopping on a budget. Just be careful, some people had reliability issues so I think it's a hit or miss. That's my reason for 4 out of 5. But that's why return policies exist but mine seems great.

HP Pavilion DM3-1040US 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

At $649 after rebate I think this laptop hits a real sweet spot in the 13" market! I've had it for a week now and am really enjoying it. I also purchased a Samsung slim DVD writer since this mahcine doesn't include an optical drive.

Pros:

Runs very cool with the Intel processor have never had the fan kick on

No problem streaming video, and has an HDMI for for your HDTV

Best looking notebook for the price

Very fast and quiet hdd

I have to admit I really am enjoying Windows 7 I skipped the whole Vista thing

The back lit LED screen is beautiful

With 4GB RAM the system multi-taks very well

Battery Life I get 5 to 6 hrs with my custom settings, cross country trips on a plane are now a reality

The keyboard is great to type on, although the use of a fn key to use f1-f12 isn't for me

Cons:

Quite a bit of crapware and bloatware to get rid of

The track pad leaves something to be desired buggy in that it sometimes locks up from resume or comes back as a magnifying glass. You can find out how to fix this in the forurms...

The mouse buttons on the track pad are too small and require too much pressure to click.

I used to travel with a back breaking 15.4 Dell M65, this will be a joy to travel with, and I will use it more at home because of how beautiful the screen is, and it is completely quiet. I don't know if you've noticed, but dunking a product on Amazon usually gets you more "No" votes. That said, I am compelled to write this review as I believe that HP did an "evil thing" when they rolled out this product.

Before I start bitching, here are the GOOD:

***Killer looks (five stars are not enough)

***Great screen (never feels like I am looking at a 13.3" screen)

***one of the best keyboards I had used in a long time

***Powerful processor with plenty of RAM (doesn't struggle even when I keep 10 applications simultaneously open)

***Silent

***Four USB's and an HDMI out (on such a small body)

***Solid build.

Then there are the BAD:

***Buggy touch pad. Some quick fix solutions are being discussed on the forums. The issue seem to be a software bug. If so, it's just a matter of time before HP would fix it (I wonder why HP hadn't done it already; I'll grit my teeth and wait).

***Mirror surface touchpad is "sticky" (I'm not a "touch pad" guy anyway).

***A laptop bag supplied by HP screams "aesthetic murder" (I'll budget may be another $100 for a new bag)

***Having to hold function key to access F2 is real pain when working on spreadsheet (but I think I'll get used to it; I'm already warming up to using FN+Arrow to access HOME and END)

Here is the unforgivable UGLY:

***The battery life is typically 4 hours and not the advertised 10 hours (no gaming or video; only standard office work with WiFi on)!!!

This is absolutely unforgivable because

***This is not a software bug and won't get fixed in the future

***The difference between the claimed battery life and actual one is so large that it can't be explained away with fine prints (I can swallow if I get 80% of advertised battery life; not when I get only 40%)

***When the Asian manufacturers (Acer, ASUS and now Sony) claim 10hr, user actually get 10hr or more.

I think HP is having trouble catching up with the "low battery consumption" technologies. Instead of working their butt off, HP took a short cut and made a false "10hr battery" claim. After all, the world is full of suckers like "yours truly". In my part of the world, such practice is called "cheating". If you are from Google Land, you may want to call it "doing Evil".

I bought this laptop because I was tired of carrying my earlier "kitchen sink of a machine" (HP dv9000; beautifully designed). I had this fancy notion that I would carry the notebook to the office, sans the wires, bag and baggage (I've seen my friends do this with Acer and Asus). That's never going to happen till I upgrade some two years down the line.

When I am in the market the next time around, I should remember not to take HP on its face value.

I understand most of the people taking this unit out of the box have a certain level of expectation, but not all computers have up to date drivers and bios updates installed from the factory. Most if not all of the issues addressed within the reviews for this product are non existent in a fully updated unit with all the current offerings from HPs site. My unit received early 2010 has the very first bios while the update offered is 12 revisions later.

I use this machine as an always on solution that uses low power to keep the power bill down. I use it as a media center, magicjack always on phone system ( throughout my house) and for file transfers. When im lazy I take it to bed to surf before sleep.

Pros

Appearance. Lid and palm rest is brushed aluminum and looks top notch. I have not seen a laptop that looks this good, friends and family LOVE the look of the computer.

-Noise. Near silent. I read reviews with people complaining about the fan. Its nearly undetectable and I consider it a real plus. I got this just for this reason to replace a HTPC that was too loud for my bedroom. Im thrilled with the cooling so far with the majority of the heat being in the thinnest sections of the palmrest area. Heat exhaust is out the back right and does not blow on you in any way.

Weight. Doesnt compare to most full size laptops. This thing can be played with in hand in bed more like a netbook. Freedom of usage is closer to a netbook

-Performance. While lacking dedicated video I can testify to what this little powerhouse can do. Play video files up to 14gb+ mkv format BlueRay files (Star Trek 1008p) with perfect playback. The ONLY place this unit is lacking is HD flash video playback (Hulu HD) Still works fine in non full screen or standard definitions. 720p works but above that starts to see framerate loss that affects experience. This will improve with flash updates and future drivers. This unit will likely never be flawless with 1080 streaming. All 720 streaming seems to be fluid enough to be comfortable. This computer can multitask but its obviously for running one primary application at a time. Background processes and minor apps aside, this isnt a computer for watching streaming videos and doing processor intensive apps. Its just a little light on CPU to really hammer it. If your not clicking like a madman you will have no issues.

-Size. You cant find a full function laptop in a size this small. This is small and light and easy to carry yet it has the power to do full size laptop tasks. Its very thin, impressively so

-Hardware/Software included for price. DDR3 Ram, 7200rpm HDD, Windows 7 Premium. This is the smallest computer I could find that runs a full real version of Windows 7. Win7 basic in netbooks was not an option for me.

-Stereo Microphone. The microphone array in the lid of this unit is the best ive ever heard. Ive interacted with hundreds of computers and laptops and this is as good as they get. PERFECT clarity

-Keyboard. Middle of the road here. Not the best but not bad. Im typing fairly clean with it so no complaints so far. VERY minor flex.

-Soundbar. Altec lansing soundbar built into the lower front. Sounds slightly above average and as long as your expectations arent too high on bass its very good. Some comparable computers sound like an AM radio. This is up there with full size premium notebooks.

-Price. This computer is much lower cost than anything comparable in finish or function.

Cons

-TouchPad. The touchpad is a chrome smooth finish which makes your finger almost stick to it as your moving it around. Buttons are much too hard to press and click. Fingerprints are a constant on the touchpad area. The multi-touch features are a gimmick at best and should be disabled. I have to agree that this is one of the worst touchpads ive ever come across. It seems to be standard for netbooks and small laptops. This should improve with time. Noones happy with the touchpads in most if not all the 10-13" laptops I researched before buying. There is a bright white indicator for the touchpad that is an outrage. It reflects back onto the screen causing an artifact in what your trying to watch. Fixable but unexcusable. Red is off and bright white is on. Are you kidding me?

-Screen. The Screen on this is like most smaller netbooks. Very poor viewing angle. When you hit the sweet spot it looks good. Its not anything spectacular and all the manufacturers have all kinds of names and distinctions for their screens all of which mean nothing. Most leave something to be desired. This is no mac book pro screen. FAR from it.

-Battery Life. The advertised battery life is an absolute lie. To get anywhere in the realm of what they are claiming it would have to be in sleep mode untouched and even then its a reach. Under normal usage, video playback, web surfing etc, the battery life is just like a full frame laptop. 2 2.5 hours tops.

-Plastic Trim. While the unit looks stellar theres a fake crome plastic trim that has poor fitting corner joints and takes away from the total build quality (Minor)

Conclusion: I would buy this laptop again and would recommend it to a friend. Its only real drawback, the touchpad, is a mute issue for those of us that frequent a mouse. The touchpad is not enough of a drawback to not buy this fantastic computer. I did not test the webcam.

Overall, this is a pretty nice laptop.. but there are a few glaring caveats. I'll try to make this as short as possible.

Pros:

Some good design attributes. From the aluminum lid/magnesium chassis (this is unique to the dm3, as in other laptops in this category are not constructed of the magnesium chassis). Keyboard is among the best i've ever used.

Great battery life (i can get 7-8 hours with screen brightness turned down.

Good webcam.

Screen is decent. Can't complain about the brightness, and viewing angles are ok.

Cons:

As some have noted, the touchpad when waking up from sleep/hibernation gets screwy. You can fix this issue with a bios flash (look for it on HP's website).

Truncated up and down keys.

I *believe* the chassis is bigger than the category average. It also weighs about .7 lbs more than the acer 3810, and .5 lbs more than the asus ul30a.

Touchpad takes a while getting used to. If you press too hard, your fingers will smudge against the mirror finish. To correctly use it, try letting your fingers "hover" above the surface.. lightly touching it.

Overall, I think the DM3 is a worthy purchase.. if you can deal with the laptop's imperfections. Out of the Asus UL30A, Acer Timeline 3810, Lenovo U350, and Toshiba T135 (other laptops in the DM3's category), I would rank the HP DM3 as a close 3rd to the Acer Timeline 3810.

I've had this laptop for a week and I'm loving it.

Pros:

Light and good looking, great keyboard.

Price... I got this for under $ with rebate.

Fast... despite the 1.3GHz processor this machine is faster at image processing than my older 1.6GHz laptop and as fast as my 2.3GHz desktop, both running XP. Probably because 64-bit Windows 7 is able to utilize more RAM (expandable to 8GB). No problems running multiple apps.

All day battery... carrying the cord to work is no more. Runs cool and quiet.

Beautiful display

Feels solid.

No optical drive--let's speed the obsolescence of these bulky, heavy, battery sucking things.

Windows 7 is great, though avoid Live Mail and IE, which seems to get worse every release. Thunderbird and Chrome.

Cons:

Ships with a bug in the Intel power management that causes screen brightness to fluctuate on battery power. This has to be disabled or manually fixed with a download. Scary and inexcusable out of the box problem..

Touch pad sucks miserably--it must have taken months of redesign and engineering to make a simple touch pad suck this much. But I use mainly keyboard shortcuts or a cordless mouse, so no big deal for me.

Battery does not fit in completely snug, causing an annoying click when carrying it, and detracts from the "solid" feel.

MASSIVE HORRIBLE BLOATWARE AND GARBAGE SOFTWARE INSTALLED BY HP. They have installed all these ridiculous things that perform normal Windows functions but with three times the effort and ten times the fanfare, as well as gigabytes of trashy games, useless entertainment software, who knows what else. Tempting to just do a fresh install of Windows from the recovery partition, but I suspect it is rigged to reinstall all the HP crap. This is the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars. The computer must say "HP" on it a dozen times, between all the stickers and logos--no need to vandalize the OS as well.

This is truly an excellent bargain for the price. An i7 processor, 1TB hard-drive, and 17" HD screen? Whats not to love? Well, a few things but first:....

The good.

As stated, an I7 processor which is very impressive especially at this price. If you bounce on over to you can see how this processor stacks up to others.

huge 1TB hard-drive to hold your entire movie/game/music collection

8GB ram which i believe (unconfirmed yet) is expandable to 16gb

4USB ports(not 2) 2 are 3.0, located on the left which are not shown in product pics or in description.

Full keyboard with numeric pad. A big plus as some laptops even giant ones like this refuse to include a numeric pad.

Great heat distribution, powerful processor fan. However i always recommend investing in a good laptop chill pad to help protect your investment and prolong life.

Good battery life(2-4hrs) for such a powerful PC. This is not a traveling laptop, it doesn't have an ultra 8-12hr battery life, don't expect to go all day long not plugged in. This is a powerhouse and needs to be plugged in.(also recommend turning on the feature where the battery doesn't charge beyond 80% to prolong life. its in there somewhere)

The bad:

CD rom drive. It works, well even but the button is so easy to hit it almost always pops out when moving it around. I know most laptops suffer from the cd rom button occasionally getting bumped and knocked out but on this one its ridiculous. Maybe if there was a recessed wall around it or something. its a complete pain.

Sound. This is a big one for me. Your speakers are slightly above worthless on this. They are tiny. tiny tiny. maybe 1inX0.5in on each side. that is it. its like having tweeters for your main sound. The speakers were the reason i removed a star. Do not expect any rich high-def sound with this laptop and there is plenty of wasted space they could have put bigger or more speakers. Headphones are better for sound quality but its not super rich sound due to sub-par sound card but with headphones the sound is much better, good enough for gaming

Graphics card. Your processor will outperform the graphics card. The card is of lower quality as well, so while your machine will handle all the superb graphics cranked to ultra high, your card will not display much change between the ulta high and around medium. So while your monitor is highdef, its not going to look super ultra pretty like you would see on today's common high-def TV. Its not a bad graphics card, just...average for budget laptop. This is a graphics card i would expect to find in a 300-500 laptop

Webcam. If this was the 2000-2010's it would be great but in today's technology my android has a better camera in it. Its good enough for say skype and things like that. Possibly for shooting medium-quality youtube movies but its nothing highdef(as claimed). 1.2MP is not much in today's world.

Hard drive is kinda slow at 5200 RPM but that doesnt matter too much, just takes longer to write bigger files to the drive. no real big thing only pointing it out

The ugly:

Of course, win8! Its horrible when you first get it, then tolerable when you learn how to deal with it. Its not good, boo on microsoft but im not holding this against samsung. You can tweak in a start bar to get the win7 feel back. Like i said...tolerable, nothing against the PC however since good luck finding any other new PC without win8.

Very minimalistic, stocky design. Its for lack of better words, dull. Quite featureless. No extra buttons for say hot-keying it does have a function keylock which is nice but no hot buttons for web-browser, or turning sound on/off. that sorta thing. As said earlier, a lot of wasted space that could of been filled with goodies but its not a big concern and shouldn't be yours.

No lights for lock keys. If you turn cap-locks on/off. or num or function there is no indicator light anywhere telling you its on. Which is really bad for say passwords where the keys are hidden and you cant figure out why Passw0rd isn't working when you are really typing pASSWRD. stupidity....and i just accidentally knocked open my cd-rom again, the new bane of my existence....ahh white people problems...

The pad can be a bit troublesome to learn its features at first but once you get it down its fine (like using 2 fingers for scroll and its inverted scroll) Im still working on that one.

Summary:

Im sure my review sounded much more harsh and critical than it is but really this is an awesome laptop, most of it was only to make people aware of some of the quirks ive encountered to help them understand what they receive. For me this is perfect. I wanted "the best bang for my buck" and i believe i got just that. for $700 this is an EXCELLENT laptop. Almost a gaming laptop. I truly do recommend this product for anyone seeking for a new laptop that wants a powerhouse on a budget because this product does deliver and samsung does have excellent customer service.

bought this laptop to help me edit photos I take as I am learning photography. I needed a laptop that could handle a photo editing program, such as PhotoShop, and lots of storage for saved photos. So far, it's working great for this purpose, with one exception: Windows 8 does not recognize .dat files of online photo editors such as Pixlr or Picmonkey, so that's a negative. Since I am use to Windows Vista, I was a little worried about getting a laptop with the new Windows 8 system, but once you get used to the vastly different arrangement of everything, it's pretty cool and easy to use. Overall, I am very satisfied.

Early 2013 I searched for exactly this configuration: 17", 8gb, core i7. The general starting price was $900. Not only is the Samsung 3 a bargain at $700, the remaining stats are almost to good to be true, 2.4ghz, 1tb, and so on.

My first impression usng the laptop was how fast it booted and how quiet it was. So far I haven't seen any issues installing the programs I usually use. It's exactly the laptop I wanted.

Then there's Windows 8: at first I hated it, but after delving deeper into it, the new possibilities are definitely intriguing. There are two "realms" in the new windows, the desktop which is the old interface and the app world, which is the new interface. Switching back and forth is cumbersome at first, and the default configuration has you falling out of desktop and into the metro interface quite often. But you can work pretty much the way you used to in Windows 7 by 1) learning the shortcuts, e.g.windows key+d returns you to desktop mode. 2) select desktop applications as default programs for common filetypes (pdf, jpg, mp3, avi, etc) if a metro app is the default you leave desktop mode when opening the object and don't return to desktop when closing. 3) I haven't done this yet, but you can also install one of a number of programs that reinstates the start menu and disables the charms menu. Though the start window is different than the old start menu, the search available there appears to me to do the job, so I will try it out some more before making this move.

What some people might miss: this dvd drive does not support blu ray, and the touch pad does not have an external switch to enable/disable.

All in all, a dream configuration at this price. I'm beginning to like Samsung.

I tried many other models of laptops but this one works so great.

The graphics are very vivid, programs run fast, and very silent!

I was really surprised with this laptop since it is not expensive but has so many strength.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5349 15.6-Inch LED Laptop - Fusion Finish in Matrix Silver

My Dell died and this Toshiba was purchased as a replacement. FYI, the last computer cost a bit over $1,000 this computer is $499. Perhaps the Toshiba doesn't look as slick, but it functions as well or better than the three-year-old Dell.

It was very fast to set this computer up, connecting to the wireless network and getting online took less than 10 minutes. The keyboard is full sized with nice key action. The screen is big, bright and really sharp. Nice.

It has some pretty cool features

A button to deactivate the track pad when using an external mouse

an HDMI port for plugging into TVs

the Track pad has a touch feature for expanding and contracting your internet browser

even when the computer is asleep, you can charge your toys like ipad, phone...

there is a media card reader slot for a camera media card

Some drawbacks

The keyboard isn't backlit

It isn't the thinnest or lightest laptop, but it is light enough for its size.

Considering the amazingly low price, the few drawbacks couldn't keep the computer from getting a five star review. What a deal!

I actually have a new Toshiba Satellite L740 purchased in July 2011 and just want to warn everyone about Toshiba's standard warranty coverage. I also purchased the extended 3 year standard warranty. After 5 months, I had a single vertical gray line show up on the laptop display about 1/8 inch wide, so I called Toshiba support.

After some minor troubleshooting, I was told that vertical display lines are not the result of normal usage, that they were an indication of damage and are not covered by the warranty. The case manager also confirmed that this would not be covered. He said I could still send in the laptop but that the Toshiba "Depot" would just say it was caused by abuse and only provide an estimate for repair costs regardless of whether there were any actual signs of damage. I was at a loss.

After searching on the internet, I have found that this is a common practice for Toshiba Support, claiming all defects are the result of abuse. Please search for yourself before purchasing a Toshiba product, you will find countless of similar cases where normal laptop users are refused coverage because Toshiba claims abuse and damage for malfunctions during the warranty period.

I purchased this Toshiba laptop because they rated higher in reliability, but now I realize that I would rather have a slightly less reliable laptop, that actually has warranty coverage than this situation I have with Toshiba.

Regardless, by posting this review I can't possibly hope to harm Toshiba or convince them that they need to stop this practice, they will still sell laptops all day long. I only hope to inform others of my experience with Toshiba warranty coverage and urge you to research Toshiba's support practices. If you still must have a Toshiba, I suggest to purchase a 3rd party warranty.

I have read all of the reviews and I am simply stumped at the negative ones. I have had this laptop for 3/4months and it was the easiest laptop I have ever set up. But the complaints, that the HDMI output did not output 1080p, come on, Computer 101, this device is not going to upconvert from it's native resolution. The complaints about the DVD drive coming on periodically. Ever think it might be the processor cooling fan? This device has a cool app (PC Health Monitor) which will give you the processor temp and the fan speed. They both interact. When the fan is at max rpm's it could sound like a disk drive. I would suggest looking at that the next time you hear the noise, I have been a Dell user and currently own 2 of their laptops and three Desktops. Of all of the computers the Toshiba came with the least ampount of garbage software and creating a backup disk takes very little time and money. I believe less is best. Dell has the habit of loading software and trial versions of pure garbage. Please also don't knock Consumer Reports, they base all of there information on raw data as well as Consumer Feedback. They put these devices through extreme tests. So Toshiba Laptops are reliable. Every complaint , except for the occasional defective battery, I believe has an honest explanation except for the guessing that seems to go on. I do not work for Toshiba, but I am an Electrical Engineer. So I can honestly say, this laptop is a well built, great value, comes with everything as promised and is better than my $1000.00 Dell Laptop. This laptop does everything!!!! And for the record, the hard drive say's 640 GB which when the operating software (read only) is subtracted, when pressing my computer it will display appproximately 622 GB, not 640. it's not a mistake, just only displays data size that can actually be used. Also for the record, Toshiba is a major manufacturer of Hard Drives. In my line of work, many of the desktop computers have toshiba hardrives in them. As a whole I have not seen many problems with them. Compared with a lot of other Manufacturers of computers, I doubt there are many that can actually say they use their own components in the finished product! In fsct if I remember correctly, when repairing one of my Dell laptops it had a Toshiba Hard Drive installed in it.

While this product may be decent, my recent experience with Toshiba and their customer service has caused me to conclude no product is worth buying from Toshiba if there's a chance anything can go wrong with it.

I had a simple request regarding recovery discs and the runaround I received was laughable. After initially discussing my case at length with the first customer service rep, I was told to call back in an hour or two so a supervisor could help me. I did and it seemed I was intentionally cut off 3 different times. One of the times I was hung up on after simply giving my serial number and the case number I was told to reference. The next day when I was at work, a case manager called my home number, left her name and a toll number I could call to discuss my case. The number was busy for 2 days straight. So I had to call back to the toll free line to talk to another customer service rep. On that phone call after waiting on hold for nearly 10 minutes, I was told I would be connected with a case manager only to be connected with an automated message telling me to call the same number I had just called and then disconnected me. Unfortunately, they got under my skin so I admittedly spent far too much time working to get a resolution just to confirm the insanity was real. It was.

All told it took 4 days, more than 15 phones calls and talking to 7 different people and my issue was still not resolved in a manner that was acceptable to me. All for $20. Toshiba got my $20 but they will not get my business again.

Short term victory for long-term loss. There are plenty of other options for Toshiba's products. My family will choose any of them before considering Toshiba in the future. I feel bad for their customer service reps who are given so little power to consider how to leave a customer feeling taken care of and excited to purchase another product from their company.

Simple summary: Buyer beware if the product ever involves resolution from Toshiba customer service. Their reps have not been given the authority to act to make something right as far as you are concerned.
