Its an okay Dell. However I found that the mouse touch pad is too sensitive and I can't find a way to fix it. It also over heats quickly and sometimes the screen freezes. I wouldn't buy it again.

my wife and i bought this after our last hp took a crap... it lasted 6 years and im so glad to get rid of vista! windows 8 is good but takes a while to get used to but i like it except it seems to take forever for the computer to load initially to setup.... after you get everything set up its pretty awesome the processor is great, fast and love it ... i bought it from hp on black friday and saved a bunch, plus i had the options to upgrade the screen resolution and cache with graphics card. got a great deal from hp.com .... i mean we saved hundreds! way cheaper on amazon and is really a great computer... we dont game or anything crazy only had it a day and we looooove it.... i recommend opting for the bigger battery i didnt upgrade the screen and i still love it!!! i was gonna go with toshiba but really glad my wife talked me into this one.... i mean toshiba website couldnt even get me this good of a deal on the same specs for a laptop.now onto the speakers...i have a rezound and the speakers on the phone itself isnt all that awesome but the headphones they come with are great, and i was thinking the same thing with this laptop.... turned on youtube to a mustang video... i was blown away with how deep and rich the speakers sounded... i meani am VERRRY impressed with the quality and depth if these speakers...not to mention the double touch scrolling.. brilliant... We might be seeing a passing of some of the refinements that have traditionally enhanced the appearances of Acer laptops. Lately some additional finishes are being added to their laptop products, and the latest laptops with the familiar hi-luster shiny black mirror finish may not be so quite as well adorned as some of the previous units. Possibly because cut-backs were necessary during these tough economic times, or possibly in an effort to help make their products more appealing after some unfavorable feedback, but I think it is mostly to provide better durability against the bumps and scratches that have an inherent attraction due to their portability.While booting up, this Travel Mate is void of the arcade-like display of flashing LEDs common to previous generation laptops. I have one of those very shiny mirror-finished laptops, and under dimmed room lighting its blue backlit Acer emblem gives it a distinctive appearance while the flashing LEDs let me know it is still updating. If my last three laptops (2 Aspires & 1 Travel Mate) are of any indication about future trends in laptop design, more Acer laptops will be appearing enclosed in shells devoid of backlighting and several indicator LEDs provisioned in the circuitry. The level of the abilities being the main focus, this stratagem may cut down on a lot of unnecessary maintenance reports while the suitability for their use in schooling and business environments is likely to continue increasing.
The advertising for this Travel Mate just simply states that it has a black finish, but that description hardly does the appearances of this wonderful piece of electronics any justice. In reality, it has a corrugated non-slip molded shell that helps to retain its good looks and is also easy to care for. The color could arguably be said to give off a dark brown hue more so than a black appearance. And since it is a recent build using 2nd generation components, that's an indication it has survived scrutiny enough to shine with the best of them in other ways than just in its outer finish. I like this pc because it is obviously built to endure impromptu daily setups in a variety of different locations -as its model name so implies. It is also provisioned with the Windows 7 operating system, notably favored these days over Windows 8 by very many computer users.
OK. So I can do without all the nice shiny mirror finishes and the decorative chrome boot-up button with its attractive backlighting, but I think Acer has gone one step too far in eliminating data LEDs on some of their units. I'm going to miss that little data indicator for its very basic service it has provided on every PC I have ever owned since my very first one -that is, until now. Acer should at least have the good sense to continue providing a data LED on every one of their PCs.

I have just received my awesome Lenovo Thinkpad x100e and I've only had it an hour and this is performing beautifully. Now I know that Lenovo doesn't really consider this particular model a netbook but if you are looking for something near netbook size and portability but the performance of a decent laptop this is the one for you.I own quite a few computers and I'm what you can consider a technoJunkie. I have a 13 inch Macbook Pro (love Apple), Acer amd phenom II Quad core desktop, the Ipad, a dell inspirion mini, etc. The Macbook serves as my more powerful laptop when I need to do my more data intensive work or require more raw power. This little Thinkpad tho is great for everything else. Streaming video is far more superior then any netbook that I have seen. I know that the x100e has a few different models out there but if you are gonna get any model get the faster cpu. The amd athlon neo x2 processor really does make all the difference. Great keyboard as well.
This is a great little laptop and as a fan of thinkpads this is a beauty.
Sidenote: I know in the title it says 160 gb hdd but I took the gamble and I did receive a 250 gb hdd.

I like the Thinkpad X100e laptop. It has good performance, small form factor, light weight, good keyboard and good price. The reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 stars is because its battery lifetime is not as great. You can use 2 to 3 hours depending on load, which is not as great as Intel's high-end ultra mobile processors or Intel's Atom. However, 2 hours is not that bad. Other than that, I am very pleased with this laptop. One thing you need to be careful with is that you should get a Dual-core version (AMD Neo X2). Lenovo sells both dual-core and single-core versions of Thinkpad X100e. The performance of the single-core version is not as great even though power consumption is at about the same level. Right now Lenovo just launch the x120e, that solves all the performance issues that this model has. Please don't buy it...I just did and now I need to work with no more than 2 applications opened (Outlook 2010 and IE with 2 tabs open) to avoid freezing. It just doesn't worth it.Weight & size are great, but without performance is useless...I just prefer a netbook for less money. Since I'm a thinkpad fan, I have many expectations with the x120e, with a great review at engadget.

Poor Machine. I had it for less than a day brand new, ran it fora couple hours it hung, so I powered it off and that is the story of this laptop.It would not power back on. Lenovo, Amazon, and Ant Online are reusing a return.

ASUS 1015E-DS03 10.1-Inch Laptop ( Black )
Amazing notebook for under $250, fast shipping from Amazon. I've had it for a week and it has performed flawlessly for what my wife and I use it for. We wanted asmall notebook that can be easily carried around the house, as well as taking on trips. It's great for web browsing, watching youtube videos(search ubuntu-restricted-extras), typing documents using libreoffice, etc. Battery lasts 4.5-6 hours or so, depending on usage.
It comes with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit, which is supported through April 2017. The initial configuration takes approximately 10 minutes before booting into the OS,
which then required 430 MB of updates. The notebook uses efi boot with gpt partitioning. Here's the partitioning:
1. 100 MB fat32 boot-efi
2. 4 GB fat32 PQServices restore
3. 179 GB ext4 Ubuntu OS
4. 7.5 GB swap
5. 108 GB ntfs data
You can boot from usb flash by pressing the "Esc" key at the Asus screen during boot. According to a reviewer of the Asus X201E-DH01, the recovery partition can be
accessed by pressing "shift" at boot. It comes with bios ver. 3.2, the latest is 3.4, which can be downloaded from Asus support. I wouldn't recommend updating the
bios unless you know what you're doing.
I'm an experienced Ubuntu user, so didn't have any problems setting everything up. For someone with little or no experience, there's tons of online help, especially
ubuntuforums.org. The unity launcher takes a little getting used to, and I recommend going into System Settings--->Appearance--->Behaviour and setting the launcher
to auto-hide and moving the sensitivity to high. This will free up much needed screen space. I've installed cairo dock, which really isn't needed, but some might
prefer it over unity's launcher.
Ubuntu isn't for everyone, but the good thing is it can be tested by downloading the Ubuntu 12.04.2 iso, burning it as an image to cd or dvd. The live cd(which is
much slower than an install) will give you the Ubuntu experience, without actually installing it on your present computer.
Once Ubuntu is set up & personalized on the notebook, there should be little or no configuring required. I would highly recommend the ASUS 1015E-DS03 to anyone who is familiar with Ubuntu or is willing to put in a little effort to learn a new OS(Windows was new at one time).
I'm an old timer(65 year old "cooter") so anyone can learn to use Ubuntu, it's been a rewarding experience for me(and my wife).
Just wanted to add that everything worked out-of-the-box; however I haven't tried ethernet, but wireless is fast & reliable. The notebook quickly suspends when
the lid is closed and immediately resumes when opened. I did have one time that it didn't suspend(you'll know this if the wireless light remains on), only the
power light blinks if it suspends properly. The battery discharged completely when it didn't suspend, so I later went into System Settings--->Power--->Turn off
power when battery is critically low, to prevent this.
I don't want this to be an Ubuntu help review, but here's a few other tweaks that I did. In Firefox, to enable click to select all in the address bar: Type "about-config"(without quotes) into the address bar, type "browser.urlbar.ClickSelectsAll", toggle from false to true.
To adjust fonts & various other tweaks, search for "ubuntu-tweak" online, the directions will require using the command line or terminal(press the "Windows" key,type
"terminal" in the search box, copy & paste one line at a time, press "enter" after each line. In ubuntu-tweak, you might also want to change to a more traditional
scrollbar by disabling overlay scrollbar. Don't let using the terminal(it's easy) deter you from using Ubuntu, this should be the last time you'll use it.
Note, pressing the "Windows" key opens the Dash menu, where you can find all the programs installed on the computer. This paragraph isn't an actual review of the
notebook, but maybe it'll help get anyone started who is unfamiliar with Ubuntu Linux.

HP Pavilion DV4-1430US 14.1-Inch Entertainment Laptop
Before buying this laptop I had bought one from Gateway and it gave me so many problems that I couldn't stand it. I returned it to the store and my only other option for the same price was this laptop. I absolutely love it! Its 100x sturdier than the Gateway and much better looking with its lightup "HP" symbol and cool design. Also, the performance is just as good.PROS

First the good stuff:
Mine doesn't run hot at all (apparently it was a problem with some dv4 models then fixed by HP) This is HUGE as I exclusively use my laptop in my lap; my compaq ran hot, the acer was unbearable, the fujitsu was so so.
I have recently taken to using a lap desk with it, and with a hard surface underneath I rarely hear the fan, even after hours of use.
The biggest plus though, it has more than enough power to do anything I want it to (I am currently running 29 tabs in Firefox, something that alone would have killed my last computer, MS Word, a remote desktop connection). The Adobe CS4 tests seemed solid for this class of laptop which went a long way in selling me on this model. In the end I switched from CS4 to Lightroom so I don't need as much processor power, but it is nice to know that it is more than enough machine to handle my hobby usage.
I don't expect instant boot but it is fast enough for me to turn on and pull up a document without becoming a painful wait for my client on the other end of the phone.
I like the fact that the DVD is removable and an insert is provided for travel/etc to get the weight lower. My Fujitsu had this and it made a huge difference when I used the insert (I took that laptop with me everywhere, every day, so it had to be super light) I have yet to use this feature on the HP but I have yet to travel with it either.
I am not a big video on PC person, but the few netflix streamed movies I've watched have been sharp and pretty with decent sound. The screen and keyboard are both comfortably sized without being huge. I love the HDMI option and the fact that the usb ports are on both the left and the right.
Finally the cons:
I seem to have problems with the touchpad when working in remote desktop, if a review of the dv4-1433 is correct, the pad is sensing the heat from my hands and the cursor ends up jumping around. Oddly I don't have this issue as frequently when not working remotely. The ability to turn the touchpad off adequately compensates for and solves this issue when necessary.
The shiny surface of the brown version of this machine (slightly different model number) can be a major fingerprint magnet. I happened to like the white better and luckily it hides fingerprints somewhat (not as much as a matte surface machine, but way better than the brown one)

I bought this laptop right before my first semester (Fall 2009)of college for school stuff. And eventually I wanted it to replace my main computer (running Linux I was tired of the hassle). Its had its problems: the screen went out within the first year and the charger stopped charging are the big ones I can think of. But HP has a warranty for the 1st year to the screen was fixed quickly and freely! As for the charger, that was my fault this laptop has been dropped sooo many times, and a few on the charging plug while it was charging. But this problem was also fixed quickly and freely due the the extended warranty I bought. So its been almost 3 years, I'm still running vista because I didn't want to upgrade. My sister needed a basic laptop to run Powerpoint and use web based apps like gmail, google docs, etc. And take it on the road while making presentations to customers. A netbook was tempting but she needed the DVD unit so we chose this one instead. It is slow, but that was fixed by turning off many unnecessary Windows Vista services that just consume too much CPU power. After tweaking Vista (it took about 2 hours, you can google the term "Tweak Windows Vista" and get to a great site with the proper info) we manage to run it very fast. We also did a clean install of Windows XP and it works even better. At that point we got what we wanted: a Netbook with god battery life and a DVD unit all for less that $499 after rebates. For $499 a good value. I had high hopes for this computer, but it has given me nothing but trouble. I've had it for a year and a half now. During the first year, the computer went through a phase where it would just shut down for no reason. The sound card would also turn off intermittently, as would the sound control. The battery died the day the warranty expired. I'd been having trouble with the CD player for a while, but it would play some CD/DVD if I got lucky. I didn't use it that often. Now the CD drive is not working at all, and none of the fixes suggested in the support pages work.The cover also gets very easily scratched.

I got this laptop for my birthday and I have to say I am very satisfied with my purchase. With 640GB of HDD and Intel Core i3 processor this model wont slow down on you. This model has a nice glossy black finish with little grey squares to style it off, the touch pad is also very good, you won't get lost where your finger is thanks to the texture style. Keyboard is also very comfortable to type, with raised keys and nice space between, I have no trouble typing in the dark. This model also comes loaded with Blu-ray ROM Drive, even though its not full HD still I can tell the difference between standard DVD quality compared to the Blu-ray. (inserted TRON: Legacy DVD and Blu-ray). The added VAIO Gate is also very neat, I can add all my icons to VAIO Gate and don't have to deal with crowded desktop to look at. There are just too many things you can do with this notebook that it will take me all night to write, (connect with PS3, wireless Display one button to launch WEB, Media, and assist).I will recommend this notebook to any students looking to work on video editing and add music, video, photos to your media with plenty of space left. Oh and watch Blu-ray on the go.
Samsung Q430 14-Inch HD LED Laptop (Aluminum surface with Black finish)
I bought this laptop couple days ago and am very satisfied with it. I thought the design might look ugly just looking at the pictures, but the design is very nice.Anyways here are the pros and cons
Pro: nice sleek design, comfortable keyboard, good performance, reasonable graphic card, cheap price (at least based on my price), light weight, and does not get very hot
Cons: lack of bluetooth (which i hardly use), lack of some ports such as memory card reader (which again I hardly use), sound quality is not very good, arrow keys kinda smooshed together with the rest of the keypads (not really a problem), lack of hoktkeys (which means you have to hold the "fn" button to control the volume and etc)
I really think this is a decent laptop for decent price (unless they raise the price up). Even though there seems to be a lot of cons, i think those are really minor issues (at least for me) and the pros outweight the cons. So if you are look for a decent laptop for a cheap price, I recommend this product.
While not on sale anymore, it was still relatively inexpensive compared to a lot of the other laptops that were no faster. icore5 2.4 GHZ processor, 4GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, 512 MB Nvidia video card, built-in SD memory card reader, DVD-burner...what's not to like!
Also, while it's easy to overlook something as simple as keyboard layout...it was one of the bigger selling points for me in finding a new laptop. I used to have a powerbook titanium G4 which had a nice keyboard layout, and even now the mac book pros have in my opinion the best keyboard design available in any laptop. The q430's keyboard is quite similar, with the raised, solid, black keys that are responsive, spaced out nicely and provide nice feedback. So once I made the decision to go with a non-mac laptop, I was hoping I could find something comparable in the keyboard area. And the Samsung q430 I think is the closest you can get to having a mac book pro keyboard on a pc laptop. I love this keyboard perhaps with the exception of a smaller than usual shift key, I love it.
If there was anything I would change about the laptop, perhaps it would be to not have a glossy screen as sometimes the reflection can be annoying. But nevertheless the screen is bright and strong when I need it to be and I notice it less and less.
Wireless works great, 3 usb ports, decent built in webcam, fairly lightweight and has HDMI out! I have even dropped it once already, transport it a lot and everything seems to be going smoothly with no issues. For the price, and even price aside, I think you can't go wrong. I truly feel this is a solid laptop, especially when coming from the world of sturdy, apple quality laptops previously.
It's a winner!

Buy Samsung Q430 14-Inch HD LED Laptop (Aluminum surface with Black finish) Now
I have been trying this laptop for two days now and I am very satisfied by it.The Good:
1. Light for its size. I had a Dell XPS M1330 before and this feels lighter than that even though its a 14 incher !
2. Fast processor. The turbo boost on its Core i5 really makes it snappy for everyday work and also for photo and video editing. The new Office 2010 runs smoothly on it.
3. Looks expensive. The aluminium on its lid and around its keyboard give the product a distinct look.
4. Graphics management. The intel HD and nVidia 310m graphics switch seamlessly according to the programs needs. Runs 1080p HD video (native and flash) smoothly without any hitch.
5. The Keyboard is this laptop's strong point. Its chiclet style and good to type on.
6. Heat management is great on this laptop. The CPU and graphics card temperature didn't exceed 65C even after several hours of (moderate) use. The outside also felt cool.
The Bad:
1. Touchpad could have been better. The scrolling seems incosistence. (I am not sure if the touch pad or Windows 7 is to blame)
2. The battery life could have been better. It is giving me 3.5-4hrs on a charge with moderate use.
The Verdict:
Its a steal. I was looking at the Envy 14 before this but with this laptop's price, features and looks, I am glad I got it.

The design, processor, and graphics are the best in its price range. Considering that I was able to buy it for $649 including the $100 Amazon promotional code. The Intel i5 IMO is the best processor since it balances battery life and performance unlike i3(lacks performance) and i7(short battery life). On the graphics, It can play most of the latest games at low-medium settings only. Design...just look at the pictures. Everything else are just average for a laptop (screen, spekers, etc.) The things that bothers me is the Wireless Card and the wrong description of Amazon about having a Fast-Start feature.
Pros: Intel i5-460m, Nvidia 310m!!(laptops with dedicated graphics are worth $700+), Design (looks like a Mac)
Cons and Solutions:
*The Wireless Card is below average and as what some reviews says that it disconnects occasionally is actually true. It happened to me but I was able to solve that problem. To repair it update your driver by downloading it on wikidrivers not on samsung site
*The Samsung Fast Start Feature is not available on this laptop. I tried downloading the software but it says that this laptop does not support it. Is there anyone who can confirm this?
*Trackpad issues, not true. Mine work perfectly except for the two finger scrolling which is not important since there is a traditional scrolling at the side that works fine. Some reviews says that the mouse is too sensitive, that is because the Momentum feature is turned on. Configure your mouse settings to remove undesired features.
*Battery Life sucks! 2-3 hours of battery life on power saving mode. Wifi-on, Lowest brightness, and internet browsing. If you don't mind staying near a power outlet this laptop is fine for you.
*Issues in streaming videos like youtube during full screen, don't use the update in samsung site. Search for Nvidia 310m driver 266.58, it will solve your problems. If your too lazy too search just look for the link in the comments.
To sum it up, this laptop is worth $650-$750(considering specs and quality) based on my several months of researching and comparing. I'm telling you right now that I did the best way of knowing the worth of a laptop and this one is a really good deal if your budget is really tight. I even checked the prices during Black Friday but no deal matched the "Specifications to price ratio" of this laptop if it would remain at the $600-$650 range. I definitely recommend this laptop for Students with tight budget and desires average gaming capabilities. Btw, I owned this laptop since December 16 2010 and reliability test is still ongoing.

I bought this yesterday while it was on lightening deal (699) with free 1 day shipping. And it arrived today at noon.I've bought and sold (on ebay) many laptops due to my gadget addiction. So I think I know a thing or two about laptops.
For the people who are considering this. Things that I couldn't find it from other reviews.
(i) it's pretty big. The picture on amazon makes it look like 13 in notebook at best. But when you actually take it out of the box, it's pretty large. I've owned laptops from 10in to 15in laptops before. By far, this 14 in (wide) is very nice. 13 in macbook was even small for me. And 4*3 15in laptop was just not right. So this is bigger than what the pictures make you think.
(ii) Feel? Cover is blackish graphite aluminum and inside (palm rest too) is brushed aluminum. It's not too heavy (compared to macbook pro 15in, this feels lighter). This look elegant. Does this match up to Macbook pro? Probably not. I just don't like latest gen black keyboard macbook pros. Know that this samsung's bottom is plastic. Which I don't mind. If you have macbook pros, you know it's gonna get scratched up in a month. I like this computer.
(iii) keyboard: I hate thinkpad keyboard (some maniacs love it but I just can't understand that. How can you like buttons that are stiff and require more strength to type on? I never went back to Thinkpad). I love dell keyboards (that of notebooks). They give you not to soft but spring response which makes typing easier. So if you know some of the keyboards, this Samsung is in between thinkpad (talking about feeling, not the way it's made) and dell. That should clarify the feeling.
*Someone said in a review that these keyboards are rubbery and he likes it, but there is no rubbery feeling. This is as plastic as it gets. That review was kinda misleading to me.
(iv) I used it one day. Battery came at 60% (charged), so it took about 1hr to reach 100%. And it took about 2hrs to run it down to 10%. It's not great of course. But these days, schools & hotels all provide multijacks so no problem.
(v) cord; no one talks about this probably because they are not in the context of school. I'm doing my Doctoral next year. So length of powercord matters. It's not long. I've seen some wacky long ones to shortest (macbooks). This thing is about macbook (or pro)'s powercord. It's not long. And for students, you just need to get seats near the power outlet.
(vi) screen. it's cover to cover glass. So it looks and feels nice. I never had screen like this. But this is better. It's like iphone without cover. Think that way. iphone in INCASE and bare iphone. If you know what I'm talking about. There is difference. Shade or cover around the screen (by incase) makes screen look different. This is a plus. Very nice. Resolution is not super (my eyes are used to iphone4 or super amoled of phones). Don't expect that from this. But it's standard.
(vii) fast start (not cold boot, but from sleep to wake up; that's what samsung calls it); it's pretty fast. Definitely a plus.
(viii) Sound; is pretty big. Just watching youtube but had to turn it down.
(ix) fan noise; again something important for students who study in libraries. This thing makes audible fan noise when you install programs etc. But in normal MS word typing situation, it does not. So This unit won't make others mad in the library.
*forgot to tell you about touchpad. it's small compare to macbooks. Actually tiny. But it's ok. This thing doesn't have Bluetooth. So I again have to pay for Nano receiver mouse or something.
(x) The reason why I went Samsung this time for the first time was because Samsung makes memories and LCD/LEDs. Never owned Korean made laptops until now. Tired of Taiwan made. Sick of American made (I had multiple Dells and a HP. Don't know why I keep going back to Dell though it breaks down usually). Sorry. Time to go Korean. When Apple advertises that they make both hardware and software, it's misleading. They make body and assemble parts themselves. But you will find their harddisk is from toshiba. LCD from Samsung etc. This unit (just checked) has Toshiba hard, Atheros wireless. Both I hate. Both gave me failures before so I remember. This time the hard disk does not make as much as noise like old harddrives made by Toshiba. But you can still hear it. Wireless is so far so good. Don't know about memory and LCD. I have two LCD tvs. Samsung and Vizio. Someone said all LCDs are the same? No. It's not. That's why I wanted to try Samsung.
*i5 vs i7. I have i7 XPS Dell desktop. I can't feel the difference. All these processors, to me, don't make much difference. I bet I am not feeling difference between XP/celeron and this premium one. So don't worry about i7 and how it's better for multitasking. Also I did 1080p youtube. It take time to load but once it's loaded, there is no hiccup like in netbooks.
(xi) Windows 7 is a great OS. I've had everything from Linux, Jolicloud (same as Chrome OS; almost), Vista, XP, Apple OS X..this thing is not bad. Not bad. Start up time is fast around 20-30 sec. People; don't believe Apple never crash myth. Apple freezes all the time. Just go to mac store. "genius" appointment and see how many units they bring back to repair. If you are like some people (mac is blacktie, pc is jean), I have nothing to say. It's all about looks for some people. But you don't have to type on macbook pros to make it bestsellers. You know who are real deals? People who have macbook pro17. Most others just buy it just to try out or to feel better about themselves. (I went Mac after Vista; that thing is just a horror story isn't it. As hardware improves everything has to be faster. But somehow they make more memory consuming OS. So after 10 years, with i5 i7 processors,pc is still slow and lagging. Right? You don't feel much difference between your pc from 8 years ago and now; only thing you can feel is the hard disk size. That thing is a good. 500GB? Wow that's great. My first toshiba had 5gb hard disk) Remember, John Farve writes on a dell and became youngest speech writer for president.
Nor I suggest you buy cheap pcs. You get what you pay for. I think this unit is reasonable. I probably will sell this after 1.5 years (that's how long I keep laptops). But so far, this is not bad as a pc. it's 699 now! What? After selling this as a 4hr lightening deal, amazon dropped the price down on all pcs since yesterday. If that were the case, I "could" have gone to 15.6 in samsung. But soon I have to travel to Orlando to study and I don't regret.
This is a good buy. Buy it while it lasts (don't know about this seller, notice it's not amazon selling this now). Not bad. Not bad Samsung.

Build Quality
The laptop is a made of plastic but is still pretty strong. Since the computer is so big, picking it up from one corner feels like it would break the laptop. I haven't tried doing this, so I don't know for sure. The screen tilts back to a 140 degree angle.
The Screen
The screen has a decent viewing angle and can get pretty bright or very dim. The image quality is amazing, due to the 1600x900 resolution.
The Processor
I am able to play games like Modern Warfare 2 on this laptop, but I have to have the video setting turned down a bit. But that's more of a graphics card problem. I am able to max out the settings in Portal and Need for Speed with no noticeable lag, although on Minecraft I have to turn off smooth lighting. I don't do any major video editing so I don't know if the laptop can handle that.
The RAM
The RAM usually only uses about 2gb of the total 4, so it works pretty well. I went ahead and disassembled my old laptop and took some RAM from that and put it into my new one to boost performance. I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you know what you're doing as changing the RAM can easily wreck your computer.
The GPU
I was worried about the graphics card not working very good, but it works fine for what I use it for.(Portal, Need for Speed, Minecraft, various RTS games)It doesn't handle Modern Warfare very well, as I have to turn down the video settings for there to be no lag.
The Touchpad/Trackpad
Another reviewer mentioned that the cursor jumps around the screen when typing. This is because of your hand hitting the touchpad right below the keyboard. On the top left corner of the touchpad there is a dent which you can double-tap to disable the touchpad. This makes typing better as you don't move the cursor around the screen. When your done typing you can just double-tap it to turn it back on again. If you use a mouse, I would leave the touchpad off. The touchpad is covered in little bumps which at first make using the touchpad feel weird. After you get used to the bumps it is actually better than normal touchpads.
The only bad thing about this laptop is the fact it is made out of plastic, but that's just a personal preference. If it was made out of metal it would a lot heavier.

Computer has a nice screen, Windows 8 is new to me so having to get used to work between the regular desktop and the Windows 8 interface. Very fast, good RAM, excellent hard-drive space and fast read/write speed
Downloading APPS is similar to my iPhone. Its kind of weird but if this was a touch screen, this would be awesome!
So far, this is cranking. I will do a follow up in about a month.

I bought this computer to replace a 5 year-old Dell laptop which served me very well. I use my computer for writing, creating spreadsheets, recording recipes and a little bit of photo editing, and of course, for email and browsing the Web. I wanted a smaller, more lightweight computer than my old one. I didn't need a big powerful machine for graphics or gaming. I probably wouldn't recognize studio quality sound if it jumped up and bit me.So...I read every review of this and similar products and talked to my son the computer database administrator. I considered previous positive experiences with HP desktops. Finally, I looked at my budget and took a deep breath and ordered.
Two days later, I received my new computer in perfect condition. I've had it for a little over a month, and I absolutely love it. The keyboard is the right size. I like the touchpad. Its texture compared to the smoothness of the rest of the case) makes it easier to work with. The screen is easy to look at. The computer does everything it's supposed to, and more. It is much faster than I expected. It's exactly what I need.
There's on thing that I do not like at all, but it has nothing to do with the quality of the computer. I hate, hate, hate Windows 8. It is meant for a touch-screen computer, and it leads to much frustration when i'm using the touchpad to navigate. I move my finger the wrong way and I'm suddenly in a completely different screen. The icons on the start screen are annoying. I've yet to figure out how to make them disappear or even get smaller. Fortunately, I am willing to figure things out and am gradually mastering the blasted thing. I still don't like it, but I'll eventually learn to live in peace with it.
Overall, this computer easily earns five stars from me.

This, I've got to say, is an amazing laptop. This is the families first laptop, and we upgraded from a Dell Dimension 3000, so this review may not be too relevant to you, but i'm sure it should help somewhat.We were originally planning to buy an HP laptop. We were very close to buying it, when a last minute decision was made to go to frys electronics. They recommended this laptop for the families needs, and they could have never been more right! I use the laptop heavily, mostly using the internet, but I also usually like to edit video's, work on 3D Animation, sound edit, watch lots of youtube video's, etc... This laptop doesn't break a sweat!
If you are worried about the fact that they used an AMD A-8 3520m on this laptop(at least mine), don't be. The quad-core processor works very nicely when video editing or animating. You'd be surprised to see how this computer can handle animation projects. I use Blender, and the only time I've seen lag while using blender was when I would set subdivisions on a mountain to an unreasonably high point or if I set the resolution on an ocean to high. Other than that, I've been doing great.
I give this laptop a 4-star rating simply because of this: battery life. The battery life can be very annoying, mostly in readings. The computer can say that you have around 3 hours of battery life left, when you really just have one. This can get on your nerves if you plan on taking the laptop outdoors a
lot.
Last but not least, this laptop works OK with overclocking. I haven't got into overclocking too much, but I've done some overclocking. The cpu does get hot at times, but that's if you overclock too much.
Overall, this laptop is a great deal. It's big, it's light, it's got enough space to handle you files, whether they be 1MB or 100MB, and the overclocking abilities are nice. I would most definitely recommend this product to a friend!

The lid on this laptop sticks and weight is poorly distributed (it's designed that way). It's necessary to carefully pry this thing open with both hands. Most new Ultra-books are designed to open smoothly with one hand. NOPE, NOT THIS ONE.
Try to open it with one hand at your own peril, the entire laptop lifts up and flips over.
Mine fell off the counter this way, smashed the corner and broke off a piece of the case.
OK, it's only cosmetic, but here's the other issue. Since it was delivered, I had been getting the blue screen of death (BSOD) from a failing SSD card. I was getting ready to send it into HP before "the fall." Now that it was "dropped", HP refused to fix the SSD under warranty (obviously, dropping it didn't break the SSD).
So, I spent the $60, bought an SSD card and fixed it myself everything was working great.
Then it happened...
My sister asked to borrow my new HP Envy OK Sis, no problem.
I began to demonstrate what NOT TO DO so this thing doesn't break.
The stupid piece of junk slipped off my finger about 4 inches from the counter.
Guess what, it died! From a 3-4 inch slip. Dead at 6 months old. Give me a break!
Call me an idiot for not knowing how to open a laptop, but this is just simply bad design.
In the past I bought a new HP laptop every two years.

The worst laptop ever. Three times back to service center and they can't fix it. Now they want a technician to come to my house as though that will make a difference. Now we learn that all available technicians are off for the holidays so its now Dec 27 and we wait until Jan 2 to schedule an appointment. Have asked for a refund several times but that is just not in the cards. I will never buy from HP again (and we buy alot around here as we both work through our computers). Bad job HP, very bad job.12/28/2012...after Peter (see his post below) emailed regarding this issue the representative that we've been dealing with all along called again. His purpose was to confirm (again) that we have an appointment to see a technician in our home to review the issue. So after several weeks of back and forth with the service center now we can wait another 10 days for a technician (they are all off for the holidays I am told). We said to Jamie again that what we want is a refund.
The best companies to deal with would have long ago taken this lemon back...companies such as Amazon and Costco would immediately end our dissatisfaction...but in this case we purchased directly from HP who only seems to care about their own internal metrics. Next step after the technician visits I will be posting the positive outcome or the videos of this Lemon Laptop will be posted on YouTube and every other social media I can find. Yes, we are upset. This was a birthday gift from my wife and she is way more upset then I am.
01/04/13...the technician invested 2 hours of his time and could not get the laptop to act up. He watched a couple of my videos but in the end determined there was nothing wrong with it. Within hours after he left the screen froze up again. i made another video and called customer support. Now we wait for a call back.
January 9, 2013 update...we have filed complaints with the BBB and Attorney Generals Office because HP cannot fix the problem and will not offer a refund or an exchange.

A large display with a 1366 resolution too bad. This laptop should be offered with 1080p resolution and more people would buy it. Too bad that HP missed the boat again... But the good thing is, sometimes they listen to basic observations like this one and adapt we'll see...
ASUS X301A-EB31 13.3-Inch LED Laptop (Black)
Just got this laptop a couple of weeks ago! The screen is pretty nice (1366x768), because its so small the 1366x768 screen looks pretty crisp. I cant complain about the keyboard its very good, however I would like it to be back-lit! The performance is what I expected it to begood for almost anything except for games, I'm a student so i use it for writing and surfing the web and it does the job well! Battery life is great reaches 5 hours however that depends on how u use it! Its fairly light, its not as light as an ultra book, however its lighter than a typical 14 inch laptop and can be carried in a bag easily. It has a great selection of ports. I would like to add that it looks much smaller and thinner than it does on the above pictures. On the negative side it had a lot of bloatware! I installed a fresh copy of win 8 Pro and now it runs smooth. In addition to that the black version is a fingerprint magnet, i cant say that for the white version. I did have some issues with touch-pad driver and the Bluetooth is nonexistent, but i didn't try installing it because i never use it -I don't know anyone who does! The track pad does the job well, its not a MacBook but its smooth and precise! Otherwise i would recommend it to any student that wants a light laptop with solid battery life.

Many have already reviewed this machine. I will not do so. Rather, the results of using this machine are most important. It runs windows 8, doesn't have a touch screen which would take care of all its possibilities. Regardless, this thing blazes through all kinds of business and other stuff. I didn't want to get involved with Office 2013 so I loaded up on a CD rom version of Office 2010 and I am happy to be blazing away. Have three other computers, a blackberry an android smart phone and all kinds of other gear which can be ported to the usbs on this machine. hanging off the side is a 1TB Seagate drive. I do a lot of video and photo work and this will park that material before I upload to the desktop with photosho cs 6.
