4. Mediocre speakers (like most laptops)

Pros:

1. Fast (but note this is the Sandy Bridge i3 you get significant speed bump of you buy more expensive model with i5 due to turbo mode)

2. Lenovo "sleep mode" is superior. Pressing the power button or closing the lid instantly puts the laptop into sleep mode. Pressing it again or opening the cover instantly brings it up again just as it was left in a second. Laptop can stay in sleep mode for days on a full charge.

3. Keyboard has a good feel.

4. Comes with 1 4gb dimm. Easy to upgrade to 8gb.

5. 7200rpm hard drive is fast and quiet.

6. quiet, high quality slot loading DVD drive

7. The screen is fairly decent quality, which really shines when working in the dark.

8. No bloatware. Just comes with useful Lenovo utilities and a trial of Norton Internet Security. Setup was thus very easy easier than with Dells or HPs.

9. Very attractive. Not as attractive as a Macbook Air but you certainly won't be embarressed taking this to meetings.

10. It is better (though usually more expensive) than the Lenovo e420 (or e520) in a number of minor ways: not as heavy, better DVD drive, better finger print reader, better quality screen. All it sacrifices compared to these is the replaceable battery.

Overall:

This is a great laptop and a phenomenal value when it goes on sale in the five to six hundred range. I actually own the faster, more expensive model that is identical except it has the faster i5 chip inside and MS Professional instead of MS Home and it is the best computer I've ever owned.

Usage: This is an attractive unit and geared for the travelling businessman in a number of minor ways. It is not as light as a Macbook Air but has more utility thanks to the DVD drive. Any laptop such as this with a Sandy Bridge chip inside is fine to use for all applications except for gaming, editing HD video, or other specialized professional work that requires faster graphics. If you think there's a good chance you'll use this to do gaming or HD video, then you should choose a different system that includes a discreet graphics card. But for a general purpose office/travel unit, this is hard to beat in its price/weight range especially when on sale.

This computer was bad from the start. It works half the time. I can not watch a video or pay any games and its very slow. I would never recommend it to anyone and I am wondering how I can get rid if it!!!!

i am a heavy user and demand a lot from any pc at work.

my computer is loaded with my work software and ERP.

its never flinched in the 9 months I have used it.

its never skipped a beat at all.

the key board might be subject to personal taste but for me it reduced my number of key stroke errors.

for home use the video camera is great and the screen is great (although not as bright as some Macs I have seen).

i bought mine for nearly $700 and i can't believe its now available new for nearer to $600.

i have bought probably 10 new Dells and HPs for our employees and all have had at least some issue.

i rarely write reviews but this computer ranks high on the list of decisions that have actually made my life easier/better.

Buyer beware: despite this laptop's considerable heft and bulk, it only accepts slim 2.5" hard drives (it came with a Seagate Momentus Thin 320GB drive). A standard 2.5" SSD from Crucial which fit perfectly even in the thinner 13" MacBook Pro, would not fit into the E420S. On top of that, the machine's performance is mediocre at best; if you've got one, be careful when buying replacement drives, and if you don't have one, I wouldn't recommend it (despite being a long-time Thinkpad fan).

This machine is built to withstand almost anything you through at it. The build quality and materials are exceptional. From a industrial design and manufacturing perspective, it is even nicer than a MacBook Pro.

I really like this machine, except for one issue, screen resolution. Apple has proven how beautiful and productive higher resolution displays can make even a laptop. Spending the extra money, weight, and bulk to get a 17.3 inch display should result in more room to work. Because the resolution on this machine is no higher than it is on 15 inch machines, you get a display that isn't as attractive and doesn't fit nearly as much content on it as it could with a higher resolution. This is especially important for content creators and for people that work in spreadsheets, but really it is an issue for all professional users. Apple gets this with their Retina displays, Google gets it with their Pixel laptop, and Dell gets it with their Ultra high resolution series of displays. Hopefully HP will make a higher resolution display available soon on their workstation class laptops.

The only excuse for the screen resolution on this machine is that most people are going to use it in a docking station with external monitors. I have mine attached to 2 Dell U2713HM Ultra High resolution displays. The screen resolution only bothers me when I am using this machine on the road, but then again, that is the whole reason I bought the 17.3 inch workstation.

When you are deciding on which machine to buy, I recommend you consider the screen resolution issue. A 15 inch or even 13 inch machine with similar specs and the same resolution display might save your back and shoulder some pain from lugging this heavy machine around.

IBM ThinkPad R40 Laptop (1.8 GHz Pentium 4-M, 256 MB RAM, 20GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive)

Sorry to break the news to the previous reviewer (please -you really have to use a product more than one day to give a competent review), but there is nothing cheap about this laptop. Perhaps he had it configured with a little less power, but mine works as well as any laptop I've ever used.

This is my second laptop, but the first one was a small 486 I bought because the size was cool. Now, THAT one was cheap. IBM has made the best laptops and have the best service. The only question for me was initially, whether I wanted to pay for it, and then, which one do I get. Mine is configured with a 2 gig chip, a 40 gig HD, and 512 Meg of RAM. Please don't skimp on the RAM or you will wonder whether your system is slow.

It came complete with Windows XP (which I don't care for) and I had to reconfigure everything so it looks more like Windows 2000, which I have on my other desktops. I use the laptop for surfing on wireless internet connections -both home and away, writing letters and other documents, doing some financial spreadsheets, and will soon be doing some film editing work. The trackhead (whatever its called) works MUCH better for me than the simple trackpad. But the pad is there, and you don't have to use the eraser shaped head in the middle of the keyboard if you don't want to. I don't remember hitting the head and moving the mouse when I typed the letters "h" and "g" (or whatever two keys it is between) so if you don't like it, it should never interfere with your work.

The screen is great! Big enough to have your desktop arranged like you like and plenty big to watch DVDs. The CD/DVD tray comes out, and feels somewhat flimsy, but you shouldn't have a problem taking care of it. On the left side are the various inputs, including (at least on mine) USB, firewire, and s-video. For you multimedia types who want a PowerBook for creative tasks but need a PC to do real work on, don't worry -the Thinkpad has what you need. I considered a PowerBook and might have actually bought one (even though I'm firmly grounded in the Windows camp), but the prices were just way too much, and I would need a boatload of additional software for the Mac. While your emotional side might miss a PB (Apple does have a knack for appealing to the emotion), the logical beast in you will realize the TP has what you need.

The unit will, like every other high powered laptop, get hot on bottom. Mine doesn't create much of a problem. When I'm using it on my recliner, I put a pillow under it and I am fine. When using it on a table or desk, there is no issue.

Battery life on every portable unit is always disappointing. I've had my TP since March and have used it some, but not a great deal (once or twice a week on average, but lately increasing). I'm at a little more than three hours, and there is an indicator that clearly gives you an idea how much time you have left. If you fly cross country or longer than 3 hours and need all that time to work, you will need multiple batteries.

Finally, I haven't noticed any pixel loss on my screen. The unit is solid enough to take most anywhere. While I treat all my equipment well and don't dropkick anything, if you are a bit rougher on your stuff than I am, I don't think you will need to worry. But don't take this review for any advice on how the IBM will work if mistreated.

I can honestly say that this thing is built like a rock! This laptop is now closing in on being ten years old. I noticed most of the reviews were old. Well here I am with it ten years later and it still runs like a champ. I would also like to say that I own a 2010 Macbook pro and this machine is built much better than that machine. Already had problems from my Macbook and I've never had a problem with the IBM which is what I'm using to post this review with.

I have recieved the laptop today. The speed of the laptop is not what I was hoping for. I will have to purchase more memory for it. I have noticed it has been paging about 216 megs on the avg and only leaving me about 39 megs free on the Ram. I will be purchasing more ram for this laptop.

The Hard drive has a specs of 20 gigs. I think it might be from the way IBM had set this up its starts out at 15.6 gigs on the hard drive and only leaving you with 10 gigs free on it. You will def need a external hard drive with this unit.

There is no software so i suggest you down load open source or if you got copies of office you can use it.

One of the best features is it has a long battery life. But if you got the extra cash i suggest you buy HP, Sony or somthing better. if you need the extra power.

VIZIO Thin and Light CT14-A0 14-Inch Ultrabook

I must admit that I was not expecting the world when I picked up the CT14-A0 version of the Vizio thin-and-light laptop as a secondary notebook to take on vacation, for general family use if one of the main computers goes off into the weeds, or perhaps to use a dedicated Linux machine.

The build quality is superb, all metal, and the unit has an elegant, understated design. For web browsing, email, watching videos, light photo editing (cropping, red-eye removal, and the like), and typical office tasks (word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations), the Intel Core i3 processor in my first model (the CT14-A0) is far faster than I expected it to be. I love the clear, bright display and the high resolution, as too many (and even more expensive) ultrabooks offer only the generic low-end 1366 x 768 resolution.

The keyboard is a joy to type on and I'm finding that I like the slightly larger beveled keys far more than the traditional island-style keys on my Sony laptop. I noticed a bit of keyboard flex, but I'm a heavy typer and have experienced some degree of flex on every laptop/notebook I've ever used; the keyboard is still top-notch as far as I am concerned. Because of the types of computing tasks I do, I typically use a Bluetooth mouse with laptops/notebooks more than I do the trackpad, but I think that I can get used to this trackpad; by the way, there is a recommended driver update for the trackpad on Vizio's site.

There is a full-sized (not micro) HDMI port for connecting sound and video to a large monitor or TV. (An HDMI cable is, of course, not included.)

Sound quality was better than I expected, although a disclaimer is in order: I don't typically listen to music while working, and I'm no audiophile.

The SSD had no funky partitioning scheme to undo; there was just a single partition. I appreciated not having to waste any time getting the system set up and running properly.

Three possible cons:

* There is no SD card slot; you can easily find an inexpensive USB adapter for your flash memory cards if that is an issue, but without a dedicated slot, you won't be able to keep an SD card permanently mounted as a sort of secondary hard disk for extra storage.

* There are only two USB ports, one on each side; the good news is that they are both USB 3.0.

* The keyboard is not backlit; however, the screen is bright and the keyboard is silver, if that helps.

My humble suggestions to Vizio for future models:

* Include an SD card slot.

* An 8-GB memory option would be sweet.

Unless the cons represent a problem for you, it is difficult not to like this machine. It seems that Vizio sat back and watched the ultrabook market develop, learned from the mistakes of others, and only then released an initial series of excellent ultrabooks that hit most of the right notes. I look forward to seeing more from Vizio in the ultrabook market.

Which one do I prefer to use?

XPS for work.

Alienware and Gateway for gaming

Casual Browsing --> Vizio 14".

Pros:

Very light It feels lighter then the air.

Solid Build quality surpasses the air.

Rubberized bottom You know that feeling when you put cold Macbook air metal on your thighs, well I hate that feeling. Vizio really got it right. The bottom is rubber coated.

Screen If i'm not mistaken the screen is an IPS and is 1600 x 900. Looks better then the air.

Cons:

No backlight keyboard... It makes it very hard to use at night.

Track Pad is nearly unusable. Even with the new firmware... I like a mouse anyways but seriously...? It is soo bad...

Conclusion.

I'd get this laptop over a Air. Simply because it's less expensive by $300-$400 and it seriously is one of the best laptops I've ever used.

I've had my Vizio 14" i3 ultrabook for about a week now. Most everything is excellent with one major exception the keyboard. I'm really, really hoping that I get used to it, but for one reason or another, the number of errors in my typing has gone up by a factor of about 20. 1) I'll think I hit a key, but it won't always register and 2) I'll hit a key and it registers twice. The double key register usually happens when I hit the key lighter. When I hit the keys squarely on, without any hesitation, everything seems to work just fine. The non-registering is probably a hardware problem, but the double-registering should be fixable through a software update I would think.

All that said, I am otherwise VERY happy with this computer. But if I don't acclimate to this keyboard, I don't care how good of a deal it is, I'll have to return it. It's pretty annoying to have to correct so many errors in your typing.

This is a great little laptop, and it is by far the best thin and light available for under $600. No competition. End of story. Build quality is excellent, and the screen is one of the best available in any 14-inch laptop.

Professional reviews have tended to criticize the keyboard and touchpad, but I think this is a largely response to the promotional interviews posted on The Verge which stated this computer has the best keyboard and touchpad among Windows laptops. While I can't say the input devices are the greatest ever, I find the keyboard to be better than average (good spacing, no flex) and the touchpad to be just fine.

The touchpad is manufactured by Sentelic, so it has limited features and doesn't work with Linux as well as some other brands. The driver that ships with the computer is problematic, but an update available on the Vizio website makes the touchpad usable with smooth two-finger scrolling. I have found that this configuration works well for me:

1) Download and install new driver.

2) Disable the confusingly named "Click on Pad." (This is what is usually called tap to click.)

3) Disable all gestures except two-finger vertical and horizontal scrolling.

After going through these steps, I find the touchpad to be as functional as an HP clickpad from 2011. (In other words, it can be temperamental when resizing windows, but it's mostly not an issue.)

In short, this is a quality machine at a great price. Grab it now.

I recieved the CT14 A0 ultrabook yesterday and have been tinkering with it as much as possible in the last 24 hours. It is very sleek and sexy! So far I Love it.

Pros:

-Beautiful looks! Inside and outside. Somehow the color and the texture was chosen with aesthetics in mind.

-The trackpad is sensetive to light touch. I prefer touch-clicking rather than tapping the button. 2-finger scroll works pretty well for webpages.

-BLAZING FAST ! Boot time : 20 sec to reach login screen. After login, 5sec to fully load the desktop with startup apps, bluetooth connection to speakers, wifi etc . Shutdown time 10sec. I believe this is possible because of the solid state hard drive.

-No bloatwares! In my opinion , bloatwares are utter garbage and a waste of resource. For every preinstalled program, there are 10 free open source programs out there.

-Vizio has done a fairly classy job with there own logos, startup screens etc.

Cons:

-The trackpad does not respond well at times. It has completely frozen on a 2 occasions. That doesnt bother me too much. The way around this problem is a quick sleep-wake or several taps and clicks.. Its still a glitch

-I miss the Alternate Menu (Right-cick menu) key thats usually near the Right Ctrl key.

-The edges around the palm are kinda sharp and might bother you after long hours of use.

-The 128GB size of the hard drive might come and bite you one day. I have been used to a 500gb HDD for a long time. I'm already figuring out ways to put the old laptop up as a file server.

This laptop is probably the best value-for-money in the ultrabook category. I bet the prices will creep up slowly.

HP ENVY TouchSmart Ultrabook 4t-1100

I've had this laptop for two weeks now and so far it's been amazing.

PROS:

-Touchscreen's great, very snappy and responsive. Works well with windows 8

-Windows 8 is really nice with the touchscreen, all the security and all the new features.

-definitely worth the money, only 700 when I bought it

-beats audio integration is good with the headphones, not so much with the speaker

CONS:

-Average display, really not that noticeably great but it isn't noticeably bad either. what you expect to get for the price.

-Speakers aren't really that great, not for prolonged music listening, but work well.

Overall, a great all around laptop for students, workers and personal use.

The Laptop has been awesome. Had a hard time choosing between a nice tablet or a touch screen laptop. I love using Windows 8 (didn't take too long to figure out). My daughter loves the picture password and the touch screen has enabled my 3yr old son to navigate games without use of the mouse or keyboard.

At times I still would love to be able to fold the screen all the way back (Yoga style) and making selections (opening links, folders, files...) with the touch screen doesn't always respond well. I've also had a couple times when the WiFi wasn't working even with a connection and good reception.

Overall, I love it.

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5379 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum)

I bought this computer on one of the Black Friday Deals. It arrived in 4 days! Very easy to set-up and get running out of the box. I like the size and the hardware included with the computer. I don't really see the need for a lighted keyboard...I don't look at the keyboard when I am typing anyway. The keyboard is nicely configured and a good size. The mouse is as good as any on a laptop. I am going to get a cordless mouse soon.

I do want to say something about Windows 8 though...it is really annoying! You can only have 2 things open at a time, and it tends to redirect you to a Windows 8 download site when loading software and apps. Skype is really horrible on it. I had to unload the Windows 8 version and re-load the explorer version. People on the other end were getting messages that I did not have an updated version of Skype.

The mail app for Windows 8 doesn't seem to come with an address book...I guess it expects you to memorize all your email contacts.

The way you have to close the Windows 8 apps is odd. I can understand it on a touch screen, but it is very cumbersome on a laptop. It is also hard to find all of the stuff that I got used to using on Windows 7. Too many steps to access files and programs.

Other than Windows 8 which came with this computer...I do like the computer itself. I am hoping the "8" will grow on me.

I already had a beefy computer at work and another at home, and I mainly bought this for some portability. This delivers all that and more, and could easily have served as my main computer in all but my most intensive tasks. I do high end gaming at home and computationally intensive research at work, for which this laptop wont quite cut it, but for the average usage it is great!

Pros:

Keys on the keyboard have a nice feel. They are placed slightly different from what I'm used to so I'll miss keys when I type sometimes, but that will change as I adapt. Having a full number pad is very nice.

Trackpad is very nice. Very smooth and responsive under Linux. It feels slightly schizophrenic under windows but it's not bad and I've not fine tuned it yet.

Great specs for most purposes as long as you're not looking for a heavy duty gaming rig. Plays Guild Wars 2 and Torchlight II just fine on medium/low settings

Having an i7 processor is an unexpected luxury.

Cons:

Resolution is sub-par, but that is the same with virtually all laptops at this price range and screen size

Wireless receiver seems to occasionally lose connection, even when showing full bars. Usually a quick dip into airplane mode and back will get things running again.

Windows 8 is somewhat of an awkward windows system. It's not just that things are in new locations, but the menus are very contextual, and items are not always grouped in ways that are intuitive. If I hadn't already been intending to install Linux as my primary OS, I definitely would have only shopped among windows 7 machines.

Overall it's a great machine for the price. There are some quirks such as with the reliability of the wireless, but overall I'm quite happy with the machine.

Extra info for Linux users:

Most people wont need this information, but I hate how reviews never give info on Linux issues, so this section is the only reason I'm bothering to write a review! For reference, I installed Fedora Core 17 on here with KDE.

-The most common difficulty installing linux is getting the networking up and running, and this machine was especially problematic. Having the wireless card need some assistance is common, but for this machine even the ethernet didn't work! The solution for this is to make sure your installation process gave you basic compile tools and kernel headers, and then install the compat-wireless (now called compat-drivers I think) alx driver. Ethernet is perfectly happy after that, though it must be recompiled with every kernel update.

-Getting the wireless running was an unusual ordeal as well. Realtek is usually quite good about providing native linux driers, but this laptop has the RTL8723AE chipset. It is apparently so new that not even the windows version of the driver is available on the manufacturers, and you can only get the windows version OEM from Toshiba. I assume you can find it on Toshiba's website and then use NDIS wrapper, but Toshiba's search function was so broken I was never sure I found the right driver. Luckily RealTek released their internal (so no guarantees) linux driver in a drop box for people to download. (You'll have to google for it, Amazon wont let me insert links) Yes, it is an unverified download so take it at your own risk, but you can find several threads on various forums where people are using it with no adverse effects. Note, that at least for me, when compiling it there were errors, and I had to comment out an offending line of code. So far there have been no repercussions, but results may vary!

-Once I got past the initial growing pains, this machine runs like a dream under linux. The track pad works flawlessly with every gesture I could want. The OS is snappy and responsive, much more so than the native windows 8 installation. I'm very happy with the machine. The wireless receiver gets a little less range than while in widows OS, probably due to the unofficial driver, but it's not a serious issue.

I also bought this from the Black Friday Deals. The performance of this laptop is really good and lighter than my old 15.6" Toshiba. I was having difficulty using Windows 8 at first, but now I'm starting to get used to it. Windows 8 is not that bad at all. My only problem with this laptop is the webcam. It's not working properly. It works on Skype, but it doesn't take picture/video when I use it with the camera application. Also it won't broadcast when I try to use it on the internet browser. Besides the webcam problem which I'm trying to get fixed, this is a really good laptop.

I contacted amazon and they sent out a replacement laptop within a couple business days. I opened it and got it fired up. After having used the laptop for a couple of days I am quite pleased with it. Very powerful laptop for the price. While waiting for the replacement I researched quite a few other 15" laptops and had a hard time finding any with the i7 processor close to the price of this TOSHIBA. I am happy with my purchase. I only use the computer for general tasks and have not tried any gaming or high demand multiple applications running together.

This laptop came extremely well packaged with decent documentation. Start up went quickly and easily. Keyboard feels good after a little bit of typing. The touch pad works well. Have only had it for a couple of days.

The display is nice. I am not an expert on displays so all I can do is describe it in generalities. Nice color representations not any noticeable blurring of moving images. One big bright white pixel ruins it for me. I know one pixel is really not that big but it sure stands out.

Got this computer in the afternoon and worked 6 hours straight trying to establish a stable connection to the internet. Called Toshiba customer service who wanted $100 payed in advance for a one-time consult for this hours old new computer. Called another company who did provide some consultation, but after more hours trying to establish the link, I am returning it for a different computer. I have an earlier Model Toshiba Satellite that works great. Watch the Windows 8 software, as that is the only differnce in this new computer.

When windows trying to update its patch, the laptop hangs on and reboot itself and the "Startup Repair" failed and gave message like "not able to fix itself".

It had happened twice in a week whenever windows trying for updates. It seems the problem with BIOS itself right from the day 1.

I LOST MY DATA TWICE and still in every start up it's giving the same message, and everytime it needs to be recovered from the previous sync point.

I have had a Sony Vaio before and I loved it, but with windows 7. So I did stay with Sony I love the brand, but decided to go to Windows 8, and let me tell you it is very different than windows 7. I think a touch screen with windows 8 would have been better because it is really touch sensitive when you are using the laptop mouse. I got a wireless mouse not to long ago, it's better but I think that a touch screen desktop or laptop with windows 8 will be so much easier. Asides that I love the laptop the screen is not huge, but it is not small. Iike the different USB ports and the HDMI, dvd drive and the gigs that it has. Although I never used all the storage on my last laptop but it never hurts to have enough to store. I am using it to go to school online and I wanted something reliable to use. Overall I like the Sony.

I've had this computer for 5 months with no issues. I looked at HP, Sony, Apple, and Asus. I wanted a quality high performance laptop to replace a desktop unit. I don't want to watch movies on my computer that's why I own two nice large TV's, so 15.5" screen is perfect. I feel it's very portable, it fits into a normal briefcase and allows a full size keyboard with numerical keypad. This unit has a separate video card and a hi-rez screen so the picture is excellent. Audio is marginal as are all laptops. I really like the wi-fi performance, very fast downloading of web pages. One of the main reasons I bought this model is the USB 3. I bought two outboard 2 TB drives to store photos and music, very fast loading of huge files as well as perfect playback of large audio files when I hook up to the stereo system. Over the months of researching computers I read many reviews of people criticizing units for noisy fans and excessive heat. This thing has never even gotten warm so I'm not sure if it has a fan! Remarkable when you realize it's running a quad core i-7, 6 GB of memory with another gig on the video card. My HP (company unit) has a fan and it comes on regularly. I do have one criticism, the touchpad is off center relative to the keys which means that as you type you need to lift your right hand/thumb or the page will scroll or the cursor moves. Speaking of the touchpad, it's one of those multitouch jobs so you can pinch, scroll, rotate, etc., very cool. I bought this at BestBuy and the geek squad tech told me that there were fewer returns and repairs on Samsung laptops than any of the brands they carry. Well, we'll see, knock knock knock on wood. Bottom line, I'm very happy with this computer and I'm very difficult to please!

I am quite happy with this unit. I bought it for about $650 for home use and as another reviewer mentioned, it's pretty sleek, lightweight and fast. I had never intended to take it anywhere but as it is so lightweight I have used it on the go. I have an ipad and even as that is usually my travel buddy, the compact nature (even as its 15") is really something to be noted. I have used the blu-ray, and while that wasn't the selling point for me when I bought this.. it's a fantastic little addition. (may not be around much longer anyway)

The processor is fast and I have had a few issues with screen freezes, but I too believe that is a windows fault not the computer itself. I think this dropped down to the low price due to a new series of Samsung laptops being released... bu i expect this to last me a minimum of 5 years. Im very happy with it.

When I first received this laptop, I was expecting a very heavy-duty, powerhouse machine that would likely never leave my desk. To my suprise, this machine has ended up being amazingly portable, sleek, and nice to use. The features are great, and the amount of fully-licensed included software is incredible. I can encode and burn DVD's within a couple hours, watch movies from my hard drive in 1080p on my TV using the inbuilt HDMI port, and even get WiFi anywhere in my city using the inbuilt WiMax adapter (if you pay for a 4g service, that is). Sometimes my PC still does freeze though, but I'm going to blame that on Windows and the sheer number of applications that I keep running at all times. Speedboot is a real blessing for me on the go, but be aware that it causes many sensitive applications to crash while using it. Gaming wasn't as nearly as great as expected, but I barely play any gpu-intensive games anyways so it's pretty good for the basics. I had some problems playing MineCraft :D but once again I'm going to blame it on Windows.

Overall, I'm really happy I bought this machine, and would definitely recommend it to others. When I bought it, it was for $900 and I thought I got a great deal...so at $600, it's definitely a steal!!

We are on our second laptop of this model (RC512-S02) The first one was returned after two days of it crashing and shocking us when touched. It was apparent the power connection was loose and causing the problem. The second identical one worked well for several months and now this one is shocking and crashing as well. It is a random thing and it will now go back for a laptop from a different manufacturer . It is a shame as this is a fast computer and appears well made but it is not reliable. The original model S01 wss recalled by Samsung over the problem with the Intel CPU error. We have all Samsung appliances in our kitchen and love them but this is not up to Samsung's standards. After talking with Samsung tech support their advice was to return it.

This is really a one-compromise (I'll get to that in a minute) value; and the one compromise is quite small if you really want to get around it. In short, this is a really rounded out quality laptop. Here are a few things I like about it:

-Build Quality: This thing is a tank! I've test-dropped it once on a well-carpeted area and accidentally dropped mine on a hard-wood floor, and not even a chip has come off of the plastic. The shell is a combo aluminum-plastic assembly and holds up quite well to damage. No damage to the optical drive as well. There's also a bit of shock absorption around the hard drive. MacBook owners will know that aluminum is a strong metal, and the plastic on the shell is thick, weighty, and quality plastic. Great build.

-Hardware: You can read the list. All quality, all fast, all powerful. The only thing I have a tiny bit of concern about is the Intel Wifi chip inside. This will make running Linux harder for a first timer, but Googling around will assist you in finding a driver. Optimus won't work with Linux from what I hear anyway; this really is a laptop designed for Windows. Feel free to comment in case I'm wrong however!

-Software: Believe it or not, the amount of crud is actually pretty low on this machine. However, I'm a big fan of a clean Windows installation, so I wiped the hard drive and ran a clean installation. This gave me a speed boost of about 10%. Be sure to use the recovery software to burn a driver disk before doing this though, or download the drivers to an external disk.

-Recovery: Recovery is made simple through the self-booting recovery partition. Since I bought it, I cloned the recovery partition and moved it to another drive; and hammering the "Boot Recovery Partition" key during boot still works, even on an external hard drive. A nice touch. Don't worry if you mess something up, it can be easily restored. Restoration takes a bit of time though.

The two minor things I don't like about this machine:

-Display: The display on this thing, when things are set to defaults, is garbage. 1600x900 would have been a bit more preferable, but even worse than resolution; this thing has very little contrast right out of the box. Using Intel's graphics hardware control panel, you can adjust contrast and gamma to your liking; but initial impressions were quite low for me. Also, there is a HDMI port, so you can hook up an external monitor.

-Optical Drive: Yeah, it's a Blu-Ray drive; which is great for reading huge swaths of data (and the games are inevitably going either Blu-Ray or direct download). However, this drive is really slow. I read into this and found out it's just an issue with Blu-Ray drives in general. Again, feel free to correct me in the comments. I don't consider this to be a "point off" the rating, it's just a minor nit-pick.

Personal usage/experience:

-"Daily" Stuff: Web browsing, watching videos, listening to music, all pretty decent on this machine. The lower resolution makes it tough to multitask (as in, putting windows by windows), but I'm generally not in the mood to multitask on a smaller screen anyway. The speakers are pretty good for built-in laptop speakers; and as noted before, watching videos works well after changing the color settings. The Core i7/Intel integrated graphics actually give pretty good battery life too, I get roughly 3 hours and 45 minutes to 4 hours and 30 minutes.

-Gaming: Here's where low resolution actually comes in handy. You can maximize all settings on your games and chances are, your framerates will be very good! The only slowdowns I have encountered were DirectX 9 games designed to push the technology and the very latest games. However, turning stuff down from "very high" to "high" does not have that much of a visual effect on games today, and this is good news.

-Media Rendering: This thing is also beastly when it comes to media and content creation. The chipset inside allows programs to tap into the integrated graphics processing built into the CPU as well as use the dedicated Nvidia chipset to assist in rendering. It competes favorably with my year-old desktop, which is a Core i5 setup with a GTX 275 graphics card. No complaints here.

All in all, if you can get this thing for under $800, it's a great value.

Alienware M18x R2 AM18XR2-7778BK 18.4-Inch Laptop (Space Black Anodized Aluminum)

I've known about Alienware for years now, but had only ever known one person who owned one. I knew the reputation, I knew the look, I knew the reviews. So I replaced my 17" VAIO with this behemoth. Let's review.

FIRST: Sleek, black, huge, heavy for a laptop. But this is not the kind of laptop to tuck under your arm and lug around the office; you set it down and PLAY. Same goes for the power supply the thing is comically over-sized. I felt like a hobbit holding it! But with a need for 250W, it has to be that way.

SOUND: Without a doubt, the best and richest sound I've ever heard out of a laptop. Bass is strong, the treble powerful. No tinny, cruddy speakers, these.

HEAT: The advantage to all of that aluminum is excellent heat dissipation. Also, there are dual air intakes and dual exhausts in the back, directing the heat away from you. (Too many laptops vent to the side!) Playing Borderlands 2 at max settings, the laptop got slightly warm but nowhere near the point of discomfort. So it may weigh down your lap, but it won't singe your short-n-curlies.

THE ALIEN FACTOR: Sexy light schemes, MASSIVELY configurable touchpad, set of bonus keys for gaming on the left side of the keyboard, tons of peripheral slots. They know their audience.

PERFORMANCE: This is difficult to rate, because nothing I could do was the least bit challenging to the system. "Crysis 3, maximum settings? YAWN. Tell me when you have some DIFFICULT software to run." You are going to have 1-2 years after buying this system of total max-settings freedom. No lag, drag, or latency doing anything.

DOWNSIDE: Hardly any. The worst thing I could find in this laptop was Windows 8.

SUMMARY: Go big or go home. If you don't mind the heaviness of this game-eating monster, there are no downsides, there is no competition, you WILL be assimilated.

I bought a M18x-R2 in October of 2012. I was very impressed with the laptop, It is heavy, but I'm not carrying it on an airplane so I don't care. I use this computer to replace my HP 18in laptop (no longer made) that ran so hot that it would turn off from overheating and almost burn my hand near the exhaust. The Alienware lets out very little heat and makes very little noise. The screen color is brilliant. The one problem that I had, was that when I tapped on the keys, the cursor would jump all over the screen, very frustrating. After talking to support 3 times I finally found out that there was a tap to click option on the touch-pad, once that was turned off the problem disappeared, and the computer has run great ever since. Support did a good job of taking over my computer to fix the problem, all I had to do was watch them make all the changes necessary. The computer needless to say is very fast, and runs my programs well.

I traded in my MacBook pro for this laptop and I have to say that I absolutely love it. The computer has Beat audio speakers so the sound on this is amazing. It sounds amazingly crisp,clear and can sound extremely louder than the MacBook. The top part of the laptop is made out of aluminum but the bottom is made out of tough heavy duty plastic which is great because it allows the computer to be lighter than if it was completely aluminum. Overall, I'm extremely happy.

This laptop was purchased for my grandson who is serving in the US Air Force. He wanted a computer that he could play games on and yet still be very mobile. In talking with him before writing this review he stated that he is extremely pleased with the performance of this device. He says that it is very fast (when internet signal allows), it has a very good graphics card and he is very satisfied with this laptop. The item was shipped directly to his base and was received in excellent condition. Because of my Prime account he received it in two days. The price was very reasonable which was a very big plus for someone on his salary. He would recommend this to others.

Have had quite a few HP computers over the years and they have proved to be very reliable. Love this Laptop. Runs very cool (Temperature That Is). Had this Laptop on a good part of the day and no noticeable heat build at all. Screen graphics very good. Side viewing is not that great. You pretty much need to be pretty much centered in front of it. That's not much of a negative at all considering all the other good qualities of the Laptop. Sound quality is very good for a laptop. Very pleased with this laptop.

Firstly, I BOUGHT THIS WHEN IT WAS 700$ I see the price is now $750-$800 now.

Okay I bought this on TigerDirect when it was on sale on black friday, and I could not pass it up. I needed a laptop for school and gaming (mostly gaming..hehe), and I had to get this one. I have been searching for a YEAR to get the perfect laptop for me. Even waiting on the next generation Sandy Bridge! So glad I waited too, it's better than the original i7.

You won't find a laptop like this that can do it all, from gaming to school work to business.

Pros/some descriptions

It isn't bulky, it's average size 15.6inch laptop

Graphics card than can change from the Intel stock graphics card to nVidia GT 540m. If you aren't sure if this graphics card, here . This can play every game out there on the market, atleast on lowest settings for a couple of years to come.

Sturdy, aluminum palm rest and around the keyboard, scratch resistant.

Mid range gaming laptop

4GB Ram, and it is actually 4GB not something like 3.75GB of RAM. If you want more it can upgrade UP to 8GB. (UPDATE 1/16/2011 I upgraded to 8gb ram (4gb x 2) for 40 bucks from newegg, this laptop is even more amazing now)

FAST processor. This is the fastest processor on the market for a laptop at THIS PRICE ($700) WITH a real graphics card.

Doesn't overheat, can be quiet When I'm just surfing the net I don't even hear the fan, and the laptop is cool. Even when gaming it isn't hot. But you must have the left side of the laptop be a little clear, and not get things in the way of the fan. It blows hot air out which is a good thing. It stops it from overheating. Also like the IceCool Technology says, the palm rest keeps cool despite all of this. The fan revs up when gaming but it isn't insanely loud at all, I have heard WORSE from my dad's 14inch laptop.

FAST overall

Minimal bloatware. Just download CCleaner and just click away what you don't want. It took me like 20 minutes to take off all he bloatware with restarting, etc. Most of it is just Asus pushing their software. My 2005 desktop came with more bloatware.

-Average screen, not too glossy.

HAS USB 3.0!

Just mentioning, but it has a chiclet keyboard.

Just saying, but a 5400RPM hard drive. This thing is still fast even if you wanted a 7200RPM.

Has modes like Entertainment Mode, High Performance Mode, Quiet Office mode and Battery saving mode. With a click of a button it switches. The panel will be on start up, and it's in the control panel somewhere. But I use the modes all the time.

Before I do this, I'm not one of those people who say not having a certain aspect is a con, that is dumb to me. Like if it doesn't have blu-ray, that's not a con, you bought it like that...

Battery life is below average which is expected. You'd get like 4 hours max with just surfing the internet with Intel graphics card switched. To do this, go to the control panel, hard ware and you'll see the nVidia graphics control. Switch to make sure you get the right graphics to play games.

The battery port is on the left, that might be weird to some people.

THE BRICK IS HUUUUGGGGEEE. You can still carry it around, and it's expected to be huge because of what this laptop holds, and the power it possesses, but be wary it's huge. It'd like, eat my dad's 14inch HP's battery pack LOL. But it's not heavy or anything.

-The HDD (hard drive) is not 640GB, it is 571GB, and in two partitions. The main partition, local disk C was 239GB and the next partition, disk D was 332GB, which did NOT make sense because C is the main drive. HOWEVER, I just merged the partitions in 1 minute (youtube it,t here's a video and it works and its short), and now my local disk C (main drive) is 571GB and now I have more space.

The whole smart pad thing doesn't seem to work that great. When I don't have my mouse in, when I'm typing all of a sudden the cursor would move and it'd type somewhere else. It's weird, it seemed to work in the beginning but I just tried it and it's super sensitive. Before when I did brush my palm on it, it didn't move, now it does... must be the angle it's on. Right now it's on my lap haha.

The battery locks are a big shaky, something like a button on a toy that isn't all the way in. I know it won't come off, just wish it was a bit sturdier. When it's on my legs I can hear it moving like shackles. But it's not going to fall off or anything.

I don't know if this happens on all laptops, but this happens on mine. When I plug in my USB mouse, and my headphones at the same time, I can hear this annoying ringing sound, and it happens everytime the laser on my mouse gets brighter (when I move it). This happens because the USB slot and headphone slot are on the same side. TO GET RID OF THIS, USE A WIRELESS MOUSE. Probably more convenient anyway. FIXED get a wireless USB mouse to fix the noise. If any other problems occur, get one of those USB hubs. It's like 6 dollars on here.

Even though this did come with the laptop, some people might find the resolution a con. But I see no problem in it. It's average to me.

NEW con add, webcam sucks though. But what laptop has a good webcam lol.

So yeah overall his is a fantastic laptop. I think it's easy to open too if you have any trouble with the fan or overheating, so you can just open it up to clean it later on and not do crazy things like remove the screen.

Great for gaming and anything you want to do.

The only game I have played so far is League of Legends on this, and it plays on high at 60fps (as high as it goes, LoL doesn't get any higher overall, so this plays it to the max) and the game is more good looking than I thought LOL. On VERY high it runs at 40fps. I also played it for hours (I'm a nerd I know) and it DID NOT overheat and I had no problems at all. Of course the fan revved up but of course it will. It's not too loud either (I have heard laptop fans that sound like planes) I think if any laptop started to overheat, it has dust in the fan or it needs a new thermal stock (google it). I mention heating and stuff a lot because I have read MANY laptops overheating that are mid-range gaming laptops. I am just trying to get the point across, this isn't one of them. Even the Acer laptops that like $600, it's a deal but they will burn over and die (HP too).

GET THIS LAPTOP!!!!!!!!!!

I'll update anything if I feel it's important, I've had this laptop for 2 weeks.

EDIT : by the way, this computer gets to about 65 degrees celsius when playing League of Legends, which isn't bad. Some peoples computers go to 80 degrees celsius when playing games!

Edit 2 : I fixed the ringing sound when you have an USB mouse and headphones on... just get a WIRELESS mouse. I got this one and it works perfectly

edit 3 : I forgot to mention, the webcam sucks but what do you expect from a 0.3 mega pixel camera lol. There is a mic as well, and I am guessing the audio is fine because my friends were able to hear me perfectly through the mic. Seems amazon deleted the websites I put up on this review... just google the graphics card and click the notebookcheck link and you'll see what the graphics card can do.

I have had no issues or crashes. I was so scared I was going to get a lemon. I've had the laptop for 3 weeks now. LOVE IT!!!!

I have tried more games. I tried Combat Arms and another MMORPG. IT RUNS SMOOTHLY! No issues whatsoever. Again though hot air blows out of the left side, don't be alarmed. If you aren't too vein you can have the graphics on low and that wouldn't rev up the fan so much. If you go into the cities you don't lag like crap haha.

update 1/16/2011 : btw I recommend you do the recovery DVD's. Also if you decide to keep the Power4Gear (you'll see) when gaming put it into HIGH PERFORMANCE. It really makes a difference. I had mines on "Quiet Office" mode and I was getting like 5 fps on Vindictus. I put it on high performance and I was getting like 60 fps. It's a click of a button, you'll see.

This laptop when gaming has not gotten higher than 81 degrees CELSIUS. Yes that's hot, but the palm rest is cool. It just blows hot air. Don't let anything get in the way of the vents. But this laptop does NOT overheat. It's just hot on the left side. Again, get a laptop cooler anyway. This is good considering laptops get to 100 degrees Celsius (that's overheating)

when gaming.

update 5/20/2012 I've tried other games too. Now the fan is audible. It blows out hot air and this laptop as gotten as hot as 85 CELSIUS. This is unavoidable playing demanding games. But anyway, games I've played are GunZ, NBA2k12, Team Fortress, S4League, and all of them run smoothly. I have no problems at all. I'm one of those people who actually don't care about the looks and just the performance. So they played even better under low quality or medium quality. But this thing can handle anything. ANYTHING!!!!!!!! it doesn't even try with those games lmao. My comp has actually gotten the hottest under the game SECOND LIFE. I think it's because of the way it's structured... it's not really a 5GB game you download or something. It's like through a browser type thing which requires more energy and whatnot. I don't like Second Life anyway. Those anime looking MMORPG's are the way to go lol!!

update 9/20/2012 Aw I see this laptop isn't available right now. It's been a year and a half now. I don't even have dust in my vents. This laptop runs everything, it's fast, it still multitasks. Runs games so smoothly still. I love my lappy!

Update 12/9/2012 Updating just the fact that I've had this for a year now. Still going strong. Doesn't overheat or anything. I have a laptop cooler in case. But I have no complications. I love my laptop like a pet! lol. For games I've played Dragon Nest, LEFT 4 DEAD 2! No complications. This can play any game I feel. The fan might run crazy though. I am more of a gameplay type person so I put everything on low anyway.

I have recently bought this product from amazon and this is awesome for this price. very solidly built and properly finished with care and very good design. I like the design and keypad. Good product form asus. Thanks

I am going to keep this short and too the point.

I received this laptop on January 24,2012 and to this day it is still working like it came right out of the box.

Speed: Incredible. It makes me want to cry. Even if My internet is slow...it just..it just moves fast. I don't know how to describe it....but its an incredible experience.

If you need a laptop for everyday purposes. THis will fit you perfectly. Business...Schoolwork...etc.

Gaming: It's not a gaming laptop...but hell yeah it can GAME!. IT was able to Bioshock Infinite on High with some settings on Ultra. Yes the fans emit heat and sound loudly, but on low it is way better. And hey the screen isnt 1920 x 1080 so having the settings on low will still look fine.

Ram: At first I thought 4gb wouldn't be enough. I saw laptops that had 32 and just felt I was being cheap. But hell I have never felt like I needed more Ram...running games..browsers...video clips..simultaneously..still no need for me.

Keyboard:...Fantastic. When I first purchased this product, I was worried because I hate flat keys. I feel they making gaming difficult. This keyboard changed my opinion. Infact I know prefer them.

Mouse: Awesome as well. Sensitive and it has the common extra features (pinch to zoom and use two fingers to scroll up and down). It is also sensitive to these features.

Acer Aspire S5-391-6419 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Black)

After a Month with the laptop I have to say, it impress me the way it boots, from turned off to ready to work it only takes 10 seconds, the SSD shines for this. This is a great laptop if you need a fast portable machine, the battery life is about 2 hours on a normal workload (Browser, Music, video and a Text editor). Just remember this laptop does not have a DVD/CD drive.

The only bad thing i could say about it, is windows 8, some of my work software (Music production/edition) and its interfaces were not windows 8 compatible, but the good thing is that this computer can be downgraded to windows 7, the drivers are available in Acer's site. I did the downgrade and it keeps the same performance as in windows 8.

The only reason I will not give it five stars is the way the ports are hidden. I am afraid an accident could come and the mechanism would be broken

I have been using an Acer netbook for a few years now. It has been flawless, but is small and hard to type anything significant on. I got the ultrabook because of my previous Acer experience, and so far it has been a oy. I even don't hate Windows 8 (my version of the rhyme of the day). It is light, fast, does what it says it should, and has a nifty Bluetooth mouse so I can ditch the touchpad when in my office.

What is there to say, really? I like it, think it is very, very good, and have zero complaints about it.

Ah. And it arrived astoundingly quickly from Amazon.

-JUNE 24, 2011: Just adding a note here. I've noticed that this thing is very energy efficient. While playing video in full screen, the screen will actually turn off if the show stops and you don't immediately press the ESC button. It turns immediately on with the movement of the mouse or touch of the keyboard. Also the sound will turn off when no sound is coming through. And immediately plays sound without delay when played.

The Good:

-Sharp, Crisp, High Resolution screen makes web browsing more enjoyable. The screen gets really bright. Almost more than necessary. I keep it somewhat dim most of the time.

-Easy short cut keys. (Brightness, 2nd display output options, play-skip-reverse options, volume/mute, etc.)

-Faster than most netbooks.

-Nice hulu app.

-I can play Left4Dead 2 on it. (At low settings, but still impressive!)

-HDMI Port

-3x USB Ports

-Memory Card reader

-Very light. Love the portablility of this thing.

-I get about 5-7 hours of battery life. This thing charges quick too.

-Full size keyboard

-Loud speakers. The quality isn't too bad for a notebook of this size. It's not 1000watts or anything, but its enough to enjoy music or movies at a decent volume without any (or noticeable) disortion.

The Bad:

-Netflix works fine, but stutters in HD. (Although hulu HD video works perfectly fine. Probably not anything to do with the performance of this netbook or maybe I just need more memory.)

-Watching hulu and web surfing pushes the performance of this computer to its peak (90%+ CPU usage, tho i can still surf with no delays or errors occuring. It just gets a little warmer and the fan goes full speed.)

-Touchpad is my least favorite thing about this. I tend to graze it and it jumps my pointer across the screen or causes me to highlight and delete text while i type. Mild issues with regular use, but works fine. Has an on/off option if you double tap the top left corner of the pad.

What can I say. First I'm pretty sure it's the same build as the 3020 model. They have more reviews for this computer there, but I thought I'd show some love to this exact model. I've owned this computer for about a month coming from a Sony 18.4" BluRay notebook it took about a week to get used to the smaller screen, but it's more than adequate. I LOVE taking this computer to my couch, desk, or bed with ease. I've played netflix movies, hulu tv shows, & YouTube clips with no problems at all. And even plug the hdmi to my projector to watch movies.

I think I've covered most of it already. There's nothing else I can think of commenting about at the moment. But I'll update this review as time goes by. I'm thinking of upgrading to 8gb or ram as that's the most allowed.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE1413TCXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black)

I love this laptop. It is so beautiful and works perfectly. It also arrived super fast. I love the brightness of the screen and the light on the keyboard.

I debated spending close to $500 when there are so many laptops in the $400 range, but am glad I did. It was pretty easy to set up and the HDMI port is great for showing the internet on my TV. It is much lighter than my previous laptop. Note to those of you with email that uses a POP server -Windows 8 email app does not support POP servers. But I found Mozilla Thunderbird and it is working out fine. The interface is similar to Microsoft Outlook.
