HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Alloy)

HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch LaptopI have had the Envy 15 for over three months and have enjoyed almost every minute of it. I have been very pleased with its performance and ease of use. The processor is simply amazing, the video card is more than enough for my needs, and the screen is the best I've seen in a laptop. I consider myself a pretty heavy user, often running more than 150 processes at a time, and rarely feel any lag. For the power you get, the size and weight are pretty impressive. The laptop does get warm when under heavy use, as is to be expected with a quad-core machine, but its quiet, effective cooling system does a great job of keeping the system within acceptable/tolerable temperature limits.

The drawbacks, as I expected, relate to its battery power. The processor is restricted to a "Low Frequency Mode" when running on battery power, which for the i7-720QM limits the processor speed to 931 MHz per core. This results in a noticeable difference when doing anything more than simple tasks such as reading e-mail or browsing the web while running on battery power. Despite this restriction, the battery life still isn't very impressive. Under normal use, it runs for just under two hours; under heavy use (3D gaming or streaming HD video), it only runs for about an hour on a charge.

In short, if you find yourself near a plug most of the time, this machine is awesome. If you need more portability, this probably isn't the best choice you might want to consider something with a dual-core i5 processor.

Pros:

(1) Incredibly fast when working with memory/graphics intensive applications; editing large files in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

(2) Looks fantastic slim, gorgeous FullHD glossy screen

(3) Reasonable battery life when using optional slice battery

Cons:

(1) Freezes up or crashes to black screen approximately 10-15 times per day. Many other buyers experienced the same exact issue.

(2) 4k read speed for the SSD is 10x slower than it should be (slower than the 4k write speed!)

(3) extremely expensive

(4) Annoying placement of special function keys to the left of the keyboard.

I purchased an Envy 15 about 1 month ago with the following specs:

i7-820QM processor

320GB Dual SSD (Raid0)

16GB RAM

ATI Mobility Radeon HD5830

Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

The complete price including tax for this customized model was well over $4,000. On the very first bootup on the day I received the model in the mail from HP shopping, I went through the process of setting up windows and then the system froze up. The screen became filled with a colorful static effect with moving black horizontal lines.

On restart, the windows error reporting was as follows:

"You received this message because hardware or software on your computer caused Windows to shut down unexpectedly and restart. This is a serious problem, commonly referred to as a stop error or blue screen. If you have received this error more than once, we recommend that you do the following: Back up your files to avoid data loss in case of a complete hardware failure. Contact the original manufacturer of your computer to determine the specific component which is failing. Although we know the problem is caused by a hardware component, the error report does not contain enough information to tell us the specific component. It is likely that the problem is being caused by one of the following computer components: Random access memory (RAM) System board Central Processing Unit (CPU) Power supply"

I called HP Envy tech support and they put me in touch with the customer support rep who sent me a shipping label to return the laptop and get a refund. She offered me a $170 discount in the event I decided to keep it, so I thought I would continue using the model and see if it was perhaps a one-time problem on setting up windows for the first time.

Over the course of 2 weeks, I experienced black screen crash or freezing (with repeating loop of 1 frame of corresponding audio) approximately 10-15 times per day. The only way to get out of that screen was by hard reset.

I also noticed when running the crystalmark benchmark my 4k read speed was 10x lower than it should have been in fact, the 4k read speed for the SSD Raid0 was slower than the 4k write speed!

I eventually returned my unit for complete refund; however, as it was the most lightning fast experience I have ever had (during the times when it did not freeze or crash on me) working on very large photoshop and illustrator files, I definitely want to order the exact same model once they correct the graphics card and 4k read speed issues.

From a bit of research, it appears many people with other brands of laptops have experienced exactly the same "black screen" issue with similar ATI Radeon graphics cards that we are having with the 4830 and the 5830 used in the Envy 15, leading me to wonder whether many of these ATI graphics cards are simply defective. I'm surprised that HP did not test them more rigorously before choosing to implement them in the Envy 15. I am eager to order another HP Envy 15, but do I need to wait until HP refreshes the line with an entirely different graphics card? Is anyone who has ordered the Envy 15 NOT experiencing this black screen issue? I wonder the percentage of users who are experiencing black screen issues with the Envy 15. Is it limited to those who have custom orders? Are people who bought the "quick-ship" models also experiencing this?

Here are several links to postings regarding the "black screen" issue with the ATI Radeon HD5830, HD4850 and HD4830 in various brands of computer:On an aesthetic level, this model is fantastic. Very slim, even when using the optional 9-cell slice battery. Others have complained about the heat issue but when I used a Zalman NC1000 notebook cooler, I had no problems whatsoever with overheating, in fact the underside of the laptop was cool to the touch.

The only gripe I had about the design was the plethora of special function keys on the left side of the keyboard. I kept accidentally opening the Print menu or web page, email, etc., when playing a video game or working in Photoshop. I had a great deal of difficulty to attempt to disable those keys and even with using the keyboard layout menus in control panel, I was not able to disable them. I was tempted to purchase special software for customizing keyboard layout for the sole purpose of disabling those annoying and poorly located special function keys.

The touchpad was slightly less sensitive and slightly more difficult to use compared to the MacBook Pro. Hopefully this will be resolved with driver or BIOS update.

When using the 9cell slice battery I had about 4 hours of battery life, which is not great, but much better than my previous laptop. For long international flights I would recommend taking along 2 fully charged slice batteries.

Again the graphics performance was amazing except for those 10-15 times per day that the graphics card crashed or froze up. Other than that it was lightning fast. As of today, the only solution I am aware of for the graphics problem is replacing the graphics card. I don't know if replacing the SSD with a third party dual SSD Raid0 will improve the 4k read speed.

Buy HP ENVY 15-1050NR 15.6-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Alloy) Now

I have owned an HP Envy 15 1050NR for about a year now. I have rather mixed feelings about it.

On paper, the combination is unbeatable:

The i7-720QM Quad Core processor really shines. With hyperthreading, it is as if you have 8 processors. This machine is fast. I use it for advanced statistical work in SPSS with massive databases and I will say that is absolutely eats alive all the desktop machines at my research university. What used to be 10 minute coffee-breaks between commands before purchasing this machine have been replaced by blazing, 10-second runs.

The hard drive is big for a laptop and is about as fast as you can go without SSDs or high-end Velociraptors.

The 4 memory slots!! Two are located inside, but two more are easily accessible behind the battery pack. It comes standard with 6GB DDR3, which is more than most laptops still give you today, but it can be expanded to 16 GB. That is neat.

The high end graphics card allows you to connect a second HD display at max resolution with no problem (the HDMI port helps). In terms of sheer crunching power, this machine can easily hold its ground very well as a gaming laptop even a year after I bought it, but see caveat below.

The screen is gorgeous. I have been so spoiled by its high Dots-per-inch ratio that I find it hard to use regular monitors now. It's also very bright and the colors are truly intense. Shaped in the 16:9 ratio, its top resolution is 1920x1080. It's a bit reflective, so glare can be a bit problematic at times, but I simply love it.

However, there are a great many practical problems that I have noticed in 1 year of using the machine:

The HEAT! Unsurprisingly, given its graphics card and its i7 processor, this beast emits a lot of heat. What is surprising is the sheer incompetence of design, which put either the graphics cards or the processor under the palm-rests. Given even moderate load, the armrest will get hot. The exhaust vents on the sides can probably fry small animals. In fact, my sweaty hands left a permanently darkened mark on the left of the touchpad.

The gargantuan POWER BRICK. It truly weighs about half the weight of the laptop, and was my first unpleasant shock when unpackaging the thing a year ago. Unfortunately, the i7 and graphics card are power-hungry, and while you can go out and purchase a lighter alternative, you will find few that output 130 Watts, which means your laptop will automatically "throttle" your processors, making them work at 60% or even less. Not noticeable if you only do web browsing, so it may work for you. Anyway, for me this is a big deal, because carrying this monster brick around gets very frustrating.

The dismal BATTERY life. I'd say that on average I get about 80-90 minutes on the primary battery, barely enough to watch a movie on battery power. There is an external battery slab, but the little hooks that are supposed to make sure it stays in place are a bit of a joke, and the connection with the slab will often and easily be lost, rendering the thing useless.

The Screen Bezel does not allow you to open your display much beyond 90 degrees. If you're tall, or you're in a coffeeshop at a low table, good luck. This means you can also forget about using it on your lap, although the sheer heat burning down through your pants will probably dissuade you from such silly attempts in the first place.

Relative dearth of ports. Sure, most of us can do with just 2 USBs and an eSata that can double as an USB. But if, unlike me, you're that type that uses the external DVD drive a lot, that will become a bother. Also, you will discover, to your chagrin, that the $1500+ machine you bought cannot connect to most presentation platforms, for the simple reason that it only uses HDMI video output, spurning the (admittedly outdated) VGA ports that are still so common. Sure, an HDMI to VGA adaptor from HP will only set you back $40, but that's no help if you're due to start a powerpoint presentation in 10 minutes and your laptop cannot connect to the VGA port on the projector.

The heat will eventually cause the 4 rubber feet of your laptop to fall off. If you're vigilant and find them, you can probably reattach them with gorilla glue, but I was not so lucky. This will make the Envy remarkably slippery on many surfaces.

The Web-cam has this fancy low-light "feature" which is basically an infrared sensor that will render you visible if your skyping preferences involve low light. Unfortunately, the infrared feed is not removed in normal lighting situations, making the picture produced look blue-tinted. I played around with the settings and solved this eventually, but this is probably beyond the average user.

The keyboard. Let me say that the keys themselves have a nice, smooth feel. However, my version of this machine has this incredibly stupid design with a bunch of shortcut keys placed to the left of the regular keyboard. Since most of us assume by instinct that "Ctrl" is at the left lower end of your keyboard, you'll end up launching "Calculator" a hilarious amount of times. Equally fun is the "Launch Outlook" key located right under the "Escape" button. You can easily imagine what this will do to dedicated gamers. Fortunately, I was able to turn that off after some registry snooping, and a quick Google search will tell you how to do it, but again, this is something likely above the skill of the average user. Similarly frustrating, the function keys are set as secondary by default (you have to press "Fn" + "F2" to get F2, rather than dimming your screen) but this can be easily switched on or off from BIOS. Not so easily solvable is the fact that the edge of the machine is rather sharp, so when typing, you're basically slowly slitting your wrists.

Pre-installed garbage. I have no experience with this, since I instructed the Best Buy people to give me a clean install, but I hear this can be a hassle.

In summary, a year later, when at home, my laptop sits on a ridiculously quiet Zalman ZM-NC2000 notebook cooler (which has solved the heating problem), I use a wireless external backlit keyboard and mouse (with the cool "unifying" software that means I can connect them to only one USB), and use both its native display and another 22" Samsung (at the same 1920x1080 resolution). In this configuration, this machine is a dream, while still being portable when I need it to be. A true desktop replacement, if you will. The system characteristics and display are great, and in the end make up for the other shortcomings, at least as far as I am concerned. Nonetheless, for the price and given that the Envy series is supposed to be HP's flagship and Mac-destroyer, as it were, I expected better. Much better. I give it 3 and 1/2 stars.

so 3 stars is a bit harsh, but i felt its a bit short of 4.. all and all it is a nice machine, and some say it resembles a macbook pro *grin* but not quite there.. there are some glaring oversights with its design.

the good

screen.. i have the higher resolution option (1920x1080) and it is beautiful. very sharp, glossy, bright, vivid.. it is the single best thing about this laptop.

fast.. i went with i7-720 quad 64bit 6M cache. this thing flies

physical design of it. it is nice. although i don't care for laser etching case, smooth silver would have looked nicer IMO.

the bad

this thing comes with a ton of crappy HP utilities pre-installed and running. took me hours to clean it up.

some genius thought it would be a good idea to add shortcut keys on the left of the keyboard for common things like calculator or email and without separating them from main keyboard in any way. this is the dumbest decision ever because if you touch type, you normally expect ctrl to be the bottom left key.. after trying to ctrl+c sometimes you end up with 3 calculators open and brain full of rage. if you hit the mail button accidentally you get the lovely outlook setup screen that takes like 5 clicks to get out of... and there is no easy way to disable this.. have to edit registry. in win7 there are many ways to launch common utilities quickly.. this is really not necessary!

power adapter is ginormous. i took a gamble on buying a travel size one from HP and it seems to be working on the road, although it does get super hot sometimes.. but at least it fits in my bag.

the ugly

the lid doesn't go back far enough. it opens slightly more than 90 degree angle. this totally sucks if you try to use it on your lap, or even at a coffee shop if the table is low. you basically have a crappy viewing angle unless you slide down in your chair to some uncomfortable position. took me a long time to get over this glaring oversight. was it really that difficult to allow this thing to open more?

battery life sucks. with all power options tweaked down to the max (40% of cpu, screen brightness way low) i can squeeze just over an hour of internet browsing on it.. that's really not acceptable. i tried getting the extended battery, but that thing is 1. expensive, 2. very heavy, 3 huge. pretty much makes the laptop twice the size / weight (at least it feels that way) and with that huge extended battery attached, you will get ~ 3 hrs (on both batteries together). also i keep having issues where laptop just switches off when big battery is attached.. had it replaced once, and the problem persists, so i stopped using it.

I've had this laptop for over 2 months. I purchased this unit with the external DVD and battery slice. I don't regret purchasing this unit but as with all electronics it's not perfect. I was looking for a laptop that would be relevant technology for at least 4 years.

What I Like:

-Processor Intel i7 is a powerhouse. I have the CPU/resource widget running and other than system startup that cpu dial never goes above 25%. I haven't done any gaming yet to put it through its real paces but I've ran DVDs, with email running, photoshop, word docs, open, etc. all at the same time and it doesn't break a sweat.

-6 gig DDR3 Ram is great as well. The ram usage widget doesn't break 40% no matter what I throw at it. The ability to expand the ram to 18 gig allows me future expansion (just what I'm looking for).

-Built in camera works well in low light for Skype.

-Speakers are very nice for a laptop, even bass is decent.

-Screen is beautiful at 1080p. Sometimes objects can look small on such a hi-res screen but OS tools allow you to easily increase the viewing percentage to make text easy to read, etc.

-Etching from the laser is beautiful. The laser etching is a nice touch that looks good in a business setting or a home office. I just couldn't go with the "nation of gamers" look.

-Light and Thin without the power slice. This is not a netbook but its easily moved about at its stand alone weight.

-Power Slice Keeps it Going. The 6 cell battery (in the unit) gives about 1.5-2 hours of power. This is enough for some light computer but not squatting down in front of the tube. The power slice adds 9 cells and I've found about 6 hours of power with the combined batteriesplenty for my needs but it adds two pounds of weight. The power slice clips into the unit at the bottom and does an admirable job of "blending in" to the laptop. It does take away from the thin profile though.

-Keyboard is full size and natural to use. The "1" is slightly to the right of my desktop so there is a slight adjustment for numbers but keys are resistant and easy to click. I have nerve damage in my left hand and no problems in jumping on this keypad.

What I don't like:

-The touch/click pad is tough to get used to. Even after two months my fingers will brush on the pad and jump the cursor and the short cuts to scroll up/down and left/right just aren't very natural. I've toggle all the settings and I just can't get it quite right. For me it's not a huge deal but some people may want a mouse.

-Heat. The unit does get pretty warm. I don't find it an issue on my wrists as I type and rest my wrists as I type. Its the underside that heats up. On a desk this doesn't bother me but on my lap it can get uncomfortable. BUT, the battery slice acts as a heat shield. The irony of the extra bulk is it is a decent but not perfect insulator. I'll appreciate the heat in the winter but not now in the summer. Think of investing in a lap pad/insulator. Here is another notewhen the unit is plugged into power the CPU runs full cycle and it ups the heat output. When the unit is on battery it runs as lower cycles which reduces the heat.

Summary

I was looking for a professional laptop that I could play an occasional game and work from office and bring home without skipping a beat. This laptop fits the bill. It's good for work and for play. It's expandable. I've had other HP machines and found them to be reliable. I've had no issues with the OS, firmware, screen, etc. I have found it a bit of a challenge to move from XP to Win 7 but that's not a statement on this machine. I found this unit with DVD and battery slice for much less else where. If price is holding you back shop around. I found it brand new as a special for 40% less than list.

MICROSOFT Microsoft Office 2003 BASIC - S5500099

MICROSOFT Microsoft Office 2003 BASIC - S5500099Hal, from 2001 had taken over the software on my pc nd I couldn't open or send docs from the 2003 instalation. I sent for the nominally pricedreplacement disc and had my misgivings. It worked perfectly. saving me a lot of anxiety and money.

Lenovo IdeaPad Z400 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Dark Chocolate)

Lenovo IdeaPad Z400 14-Inch Touchscreen LaptopWould have given this computer 5 stars but I had to send my first one back because of WiFi issues. It seems there is a know WiFi issue. I don't know if it's affecting all brands of computers with the Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230 adapter or just Lenovo. After reading other reviews on Lenovo computers I was worried that I would have the same issue as I had with the first Z400 Touch. The 2nd arrived yesterday and it is working perfectly. The hardest part of the setup was finding an unused email address for hotmail which you need for the Win8 Store, alot like a Gmail account for Android. I have a model only sold online from the Lenovo store with the only difference is that mine has 8 Gigs of RAM and a 1600X900 Display. This unit is is super fast with all the power I need. The processor is a full power I5 not like most laptops that sacrifice processing speed to extend battery life by using low voltage processors. The unit is well built and has a solid feel. There is some flex in the keyboard but from my experience every chicklet style keyboard I've used has about the same amount of flex. My guess would be to cut down on the thickness of the unit something had to give but typing is not an issue. I read some reviews where people feel the trackpad is touchy and feels "cheap", whatever that means, which I have to disagree to both. I am very happy with the computer since I got the replacement.

Another downside is it is a sealed unit which is becoming very common with the thinner notebooks and ultrabooks so I didn't take a star away for that. This means that computer has to be taken in to a service center to have the battery replaced.

Another negative and I mean a big negative is dealing with Lenovo Customer DisService, which you will have to do if you buy from their online store. From ship dates being changed 4 times in 4 days to being transferred from person to person who couldn't help you only to escalate it to someone who wouldn't call you back as promised. If you do have a WiFi issue where the adapter doesn't see a network or a very weak network and has connection issues return the computer for replacement. It is a hardware issue not software. Don't waste your time with Tech Support they can't fix it. You'll just get frustrated and have to return it anyway. It took me about 20 hours on the phone with Lenovo until I got a great rep who took charge of my problem and I had my replacement to me in 3 business days instead of the weeks others were telling me. Buy it from Amazon who does have excellent customer service, shameless plug, and deal with a great company. STAY AWAY FROM THE ONLINE STORE.

All in all it's a great computer if you don't have to deal with Lenovo Customer DisService.

I bought this product off of the manufacturer's website(they had a sale for it) and I love it. I needed a new, everyday laptop and so far this is perfect. It is fast, the touch screen is really cool, and it is easy to use. It comes with Windows 8, which I know a lot of people don't like, but it can actually make things really easy once you get used to it. I do have a few issues with the product, but none of them are deal breakers:

1. Outer case easily picks up finger prints, and requires a solution to get rid of them(I used a cloth and hand sanitizer, which you can use for the touchscreen, too)

2. Keyboard is kind of awkward for me. I have small hands and I still end up typing on the wrong row of keys randomly. My last laptop was a behemoth and had a keyboard to match it. I will just have to get used to it.

3. The keyboard kind of bows in when I type, which is strange.

4. The key you can use to close programs is between the refresh and increase volume buttons--which is annoying.

5. The case, in my opinion, doesn't look "dark chocolate" at all. It just looks plain black. Maybe I need to get it in the sunlight or look at dark chocolate again?

Overall, I love this laptop and am very happy with the buy. We will see if this continues to be the case in the coming years.

I was unable to move but a few feet away with laptop without losing internet connection due to a weak wireless signal. Trouble is not with my router as I can use my Acer laptop outside of my house and still have a strong signal same with with my iPad and cell phones. Called Levono and they were unable to help. So I will be returning.

I have since seen other complaints on the Levono's forums in regards to networking issues. Too bad, I really liked this laptop.

ASUS UX31A-DH71 13.3-Inch Zenbook (Silver Aluminum)

ASUS UX31A-DH71 13.3-Inch ZenbookI travel on a regular basis and wanted a laptop to carry around. But still want form and function beyond a tablet.

This fits the bill perfectly. I was able to load the few programs I use and documents and still have a great deal of space left, which was my concern on the ultra-books.

Speed? you lift the screen and the unit is on and running. Programs run fast and smooth.

The other review talking about the track pad was correct, however they updated the software for the unit and its totally fixed. In fact right when it updates the first time its powers on this is fixed.

The only difficult section is getting used to the quick gestures that Windows 8 uses to move between programs, scan up and down a page etc. But once you figure them out its pretty quick and intuitive.

Overall this was a great purchase. I have had it for 3 weeks and love it.

My Sony Vaio VPCSA was only one year old and got stolen from me, so I needed to buy a new laptop. It was quite clear that I wouldn't get the same model again. Just like last year, I spent a lot of time learning about the current state of the laptop market before purchasing the Asus UX31A. So far, I have been very pleased with my choice.

My hard requirements for a laptop are fairly basic:

writing

software development in Linux

the option to play games such as StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3.

possible to carry around every day: ideally not larger than 14"; if 15", then it should be lightweight

no fan noise during office use

battery life > 4 hours

My wish-list included:

very good display

non-glossy display

SSD drive

very good build quality

hybrid graphics card (*)

I learnt quickly that there is no perfect device and that you have to compromise somewhere. Luckily, the only compromise I had to make for the UX31A is the hybrid graphics card (*). It turns out that laptops with a hybrid graphics card are often at least 15" and quite heavy (such as the Macbook Pro Retina 15", which is the only Macbook Pro Retina that has hybrid graphics and is too expensive), and they generally have a relatively bad build quality, loud fans, and a very short battery life (even when the dedicated graphics card is powered off). I considered the UX32VD, but I didn't want to sacrifice both the SSD-card and the excellent build quality of the UX31A just to get a low-end hybrid graphics card.

I am so glad I did compromise on this point! I can play StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 perfectly fine on customized Mid settings after playing around with some of the settings. Some options that only require RAM and do not depend on the GPU can even be set to High. It is important to manually switch to the "High Performance" power plan in Windows and not use the default "Power4Gear High Performance" since the latter appears to exhibit noticeably worse performance. The graphics still looks very good, and besides, I've heard that StarCraft 2 Pros actually play it on Low. In fact, I feel like these games actually run much smoother now than on my old Sony Vaio, which did have a dedicated graphics card. Maybe this is because you can't use ATI's original graphics driver, but you have to use Sony's outdated version. Furthermore, hybrid graphics has always been a hassle, especially in Linux, and it is annoying to switch graphics cards. It's awesome not to have to deal with this. The Intel HD 4000 appears to be a really decent card.

The display

The Chromebook Pixel, the Macbook Pro Retina, and the UX31A are, at the time of this writing and to the best of my knowledge, the only laptops with high-resolution displays. The gaming requirement meant that I couldn't get the Chromebook Pixel because it's not clear that you can install Windows on it (you can install Linux). The Macbook Pro Retina display is glossy, and apparently, even more prone to reflections than old glossy Macbook displays. The UX31A has an excellent non-glossy display and is a pleasure to work with!

The UX31A and Linux

I installed Ubuntu 12.10 on this device. I ran into some minor issues during the installation, but now that everything is set up, everything seems to work perfectly.

To install Ubuntu 12.10, you either need an external DVD drive or an external storage device. I used a DVD drive. Unfortunately, the computer did not automatically boot from the DVD, and I first had to change the corresponding setting in the BIOS (now called EMI). You also need to deactivate a strange "secure boot" feature in the EMI, as this does not work with Ubuntu.

The Wireless adapter didn't work right away on my device. However, if the USB to ethernet adapter is plugged in before the computer boots, you can get internet this way at the time of installation.

After the installation, going through this guide helped me to set everything up: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AsusZenbookPrime

It is likely that the installation will be much smoother on Ubuntu 13.04.

Final remarks

The UX31A is sturdy, lightweight, and thin. It is so light that I have to open my backpack to check whether I really put it in there. I really like the keyboard and the display. The trackpad is a bit unusual, but of high quality too. The computer boots in seconds and is fan-free during office use. If you have needs similar to the ones I listed above, consider buying this laptop.

I travel a lot for my job and I thought I would give an Ultrabook a try with touchscreen capabilities, even though I like my trusty Sony Z series lightweight 13" laptop I've had for 2 years.

Bought this on the road at Best Buy and my initial impression was great until the next 5 hotels and other buildings I used it at. Whenever there was even a 2 to 3 bar signal the wifi slowed way down. I even brought out my aging Sony and my Samsung 10" tablet to be certain it was an issue with the computer and not all the crappy wireless signals you can get at certain hotels. It was this computer. Every time I compared it, it was painfully slower than the other 2. Downloads, and playback of video news stories were constantly stopping and starting, while my Sony and tablet just played and downloaded the same files without a hitch.

So I called tech support, downloaded the latest driver, tweaked the power settings to all max, did it all to no avail. Returned the unit and bought another one a few weeks later thinking maybe it was just "that" Asus, and wanted to give it another chance. Same exact problem occurs at every hotel, and now, even at home with blazing fast wifi (50mbps). As soon as I take it even 20' away from the router it fails miserably in general wifi performance. I am a pretty accomplished techie guy and researched the hell out of this noting wifi adapter strength settings in the power settings that I read in other forums. Nothing works to eliminate this problem. Unfortunately I will be returning this one as well.

Too bad really, because in most other ways this is a great ultrabook, which is why I've been trying so hard to make it work. Just have to wait for something better around he corner.

Would you believe this laptop is not only amazingly thin, light, and fast, but it also supports two external monitors in addition to the laptop screen!? I run one monitor at 1920x1080 over the micro HDMI port and another at 1920x1080 over the micro VGA port.

After having a terrible experience with laptops (bought two acers, both broke within 6 months and acer didn't even bother helping me) this laptop gave me hope. The RAM is just right with 4gb and a 2.30 gh processor this machine is so fast. Its been working great for me, and is good for traveling. I am a DJ and use my laptop for music and it worked great at my first gig a couple weeks ago. I also use it for my personal use and I like my computers super fast. This is perfect. Also Dell is a great company with excellent support. I would recommend this computer to anyone weather it be for personal or business use. Also never buy from Acer I amazed that their even allowed to stay in business with the crap they sell.

P.S. I didn't buy my Dell at amazon I bought it at BestBuy.

Acer Aspire AS5755-6699 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Black)

Acer Aspire AS5755-6699 15.6-Inch LaptopI've only been using this laptop for a few days. But it's a winner. Great screen, speakers, keyboard, webcam, very easy to set up. Windows 7 is a snap to use. (I've been using Vista, before that XP Pro and XP.)The laptop comes with 4gb of ram. I ordered two 4gb. to increase the ram to 8gb. I found the upgrade here on Amazon for only $29. That's cheap enough. I would recommend Acer to anyone that wants a good computer that doesn't cost a lot of money.

After looking at laptops for several months I finally settled on this little beauty. This is my first laptop and I have fallen in love with it. I wanted a machine to use "Push 2 TV" with and kiss my cable bill goodbye and I did just that. Life is good! Caught this Acer on sale at Micro Center for $379 and I couldn't be happier. If you're thinking about this one, get it. You won't be sorry especially at $379.

I bought this laptop a year ago. My laptop died and I needed a new one quick. Money was tight and so I shopped around(big box stores, online, etc...) and I kept coming back to this one. I love this computer it exceeded my expectations. I waited a year to review because I feel this is the best way to measure how well an electronic device works. It's easy to write a good review 3 days after you bought something when it is still shiny new. This laptop took a beating and still runs prefect, not one issue. I use it for work and school everyday for at least three hours at a time. Acer makes a great product at a great price. Don't let the low price fool you this was well worth the $500. I ran ArcGIS 9.3 (full version)right out of the box no problem. I also used it for class on 3d game design and 3d online worlds, not one hiccup.

I bought this as a cheap stop gap measure to get me by till I got a better laptop and never traded-up.

Buy This laptop.

I picked this laptop up for $400 on Amazon as a gift for my mom. I spent a few hours setting it up for her before hand and I have to say for the price I'm really impressed. Things could be better namely the screen isn't very good, it gets washed out very easily, but it's not terrible.

As long as you set your expectations accordingly you'll be very happy with it. As stated, the screen isn't great, there's no backlit keyboard, and specs aren't blazing fast but that's not really something you can expect in a laptop under $500. What it does offer that a lot of others don't is USB 3.0 (most will have only 2.0), Intel Core i3 (most will have either Pentium D or AMD) or Intel WiDi. It's really impressive to find that in a laptop so cheap. To really improve the problem specs (screen namely, maybe hard drive speed/size) the laptop would likely have to cost double.

All in all, very pleased. Acer bloatware was minimal and easily removed too. I probably had it all cleaned off and installed with the software she'd need in under 2 hours.

I wanted an Apple, I wanted a white computer & I wanted something compact but not too small. I knew this was the computer I wanted the second I saw it. I read the reviews from others & according to how many this company has sold...there are not many complaints.

I was a bit nervous but took the plunge anyway & I have to say that I'm pretty happy with the results. The computer itself works pretty good. When I got it I had to update the system programs but that was quite easy. The computer was shutting down on its own but that problem has since gone away...how it did this, I don't know but I didn't do anything to help it along. A few other glitches were; having trouble cutting & pasting, putting pictures on fb and a few other things like that. All of which I have figured out. I am about 95% happy. The cost was easy, it fit right into my budget. And now I"m sitting here on holiday typing out this review to you. I didn't like the refund policy or that I had to pay for shipping had anything happened or been wrong with my lil computer but luckily that wasn't the case.

I should also mention that as soon as I made a complaint to this company they were pretty quick to answer. Pretty happy about that. They gave some good solutions to my computer shutting down on its own. Glad I made the purchase, no regrets :)

I am extremely happy with my purchase! The only thing that that could be improved on is the sound which could be a little louder. I LOVE that this has the HDMI port (this was actually the main reason I chose this!) By connecting an HMDI cable from my laptop to TV, I am able to surf the web on a 50 inch screen (as well as watch movies, etc). I noticed that someone commented on the keyboard personally, I have had no problems. My mom has Rheumatoid arthritis and uses my laptop frequently with no complaints. I think the keyboard is really cool! Plus if you shop around you can get a keyboard skin for under five bucks (The EB series fit perfectly!) I use this laptop for everything school (Microsoft office), graphic design(Photoshop), and download many things to the hard drive. It has continued to run flawlessly! Also, there is an "assist" button that connects you with live help from Sony 24/7 (It's free, I use it all the time!) I highly recommend this laptop!!

First of all, I would like to say that I have owned four different laptops now, and, out of all of them I like this one second best. Strongly missing my Dell Studio 15, right now.

This was a laptop purchased for me by a dear friend, since my Dell just kicked the bucket. We had decided on a cheaper Gateway laptop, but at the last minute she got me this one instead, thinking it was a nicer model.

I can say that it is a physically attractive laptop... you can't tell from the photos, but, it has a nice sheen and some glitter in it if you're into that sort of thing.

My number one complaint, and it's a pretty big deal to me, is that they tried to cram a full-sized keyboard onto a laptop, and the result is disastrous. When I got my Dell Studio, it was like putting on a glove in regards to comfort... but this Vaio is like putting a right shoe that is three sizes too small onto a left foot. My fingers and knuckles are already very sore due to the angle I have to type at to even try to put my fingertips on the correct keys. The touch pad is entirely unusable due to location and the texture they used for it.

Other than that, the graphics card seems pretty nice, Guild Wars looks beautiful on this laptop and runs wonderfully-just hope it'll handle Guild Wars 2. It seems to run things relatively fast, and came with Google Chrome already installed-I was happy about that tidbit. Windows 7 is a great Operating System.

For the price paid, it's a good buy, but will take getting used to for this ridiculous keyboard.

Lenovo 438343U 15.6" AMD E-300 Dual Core Laptop with Windows 7

Lenovo 438343U 15.6' AMD E-300 Dual Core Laptop with Windows 7This model is made by Lenovo specifically for Best Buy's Black Friday 2011 sale. It was sold for $178 and many people thought they got a great deal. After all, a laptop with OK specs from a name brand manufacturer. What they didn't realize is that Lenovo stripped as much as they could off the laptop to meet this price point. That includes replacing the stereo speakers with a cheap monaural speaker. Yes, the sound comes out of only one side of this laptop. This does not affect people who listen through headphones, it's just that this fact was mentioned nowhere in the technical specs nor the Black Friday ad.

For anyone looking to upgrade RAM, this also only has 1 DIMM slot, so the max you can go is 4GB on a single DDR3 stick. If you're fine with the above, go ahead and make the purchase. But buyers must be aware of these facts.

I bought this at Best Buy and think its a pretty decent computer. The standout feature was the price though. Good PC for basic computer users. Good for browsing the web, email, and occasionally creating documents.

Like the other review states this model was specifically manufactured for Best Buy's Black Friday promotion and does have some limitations.

Among the Cons:

Only has 1 speaker (mono sound).

Only has 1 RAM tray, max at 4GB on one ram stick.

No memory card reader

No HDMI

Case feels a little like cheap plastic.

Hard Drive partitioning is kinda weird. There is a Drive 'C' with about 180gb and a Drive 'D' (Lenovo) with 30gb (about 26gb of which are free; applications and drivers can be found here).

The Processor AMD E-300 is both a PRO and CON. It is a very basic processor with low CPU Benchmark results.

The Good:

THE PRICE! $180 @ BB on Black Friday.

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit (again you can only install 4gb of ram though)

Webcam; with face recognition login software (your webcam will recognize you and automatically log you into Windows).

Microsoft Office 2010 Starter (Functional Word, and Excel with ads included; no PowerPoint, Outlook though... that's what OpenOffice/LibreOffice is for)

Lightweight

Good keyboard and track pad

Good battery life, and battery management software

Very little bloatware (some programs don't come pre-installed; rather you need to install them from the Lenovo Drive, in the 'Apps' folder).

Small and compact AC adapter

Google Chrome pre-installed faster than Internet Explorer

Good HD graphics, because of graphics card

Processor (Con and Pro): It gets the job done!

Overall:

Great computer, for the price, for basic computer users. I got this for my mother who uses the computer pretty much only to surf the internet, and check email. For the price, and what she'll use it for its perfect. Again, for basic everyday computing this laptop will get the job done, but not for those with high resource needs (specially because of RAM/Processor limitations).

First let me say that this laptop and it's reviews are going to be far more subjective than most other laptop reviews. Mainly due to the E-300 CPU.

One's opinion of it will REALLY depend their usage requirements:

what you plan to use it for

what software you plan to run on it

will this be your first laptop

are you just going to use it for web surfing and/or checking email

do you normally have just a couple windows open when using a laptop OR are you the type of person that must have 25 windows open, with 25 apps running simultaneously

Myself, my only other "personally owned", "portable" computing device has been an emachine netbook, purchased two years ago.

However, I have owned over 10 desktop PCs over the past 15 years.

So when I compare this unit's functionality to my netbook, the experience is the same and/or better than the netbook.

When comparing to one of my quad-core desktop computers, the performance gap widens quite a bit.

[Note: The performance index I got from this Lenovo was 3.4; due to the CPU].

Pros:

the screen is thinner than my netbook (and laptops I use at work). Yet the screen is large enough to view most anything I've looked at while using the unit.

6 cell battery. Longer running time than my netbook with it's measily 3 cell.

built-in optical device (my netbook requires that I carry a slim line external DVD drive).

so far it has been adequate for light usage: surfing and email

Cons:

performance index is lower than other computers I have used.

one memory socket that requires removing the existing So-dimm module and replacing with a larger one.

no HDMI (I knew this going in)

one speaker (as noted by another reviewer).

If you plan to buy one, I'd suggest trying to find a computer on display somewhere which uses the E-300 CPU. That way you can test drive to get some idea of how it might work out for you.

For some people on a budget, they might be able to forgive it's slower speed.

If you currently have an AMD quad core computer and you want this as a new laptop, more than likely you will be quite irritated by the slower speed than what a quad core runs at.

If you just need something to check email and web surf while away from home, it might work out fine.

Asus® U56E-RBL7 Laptop Computer With 15.6" LED-Backlit Screen & 2nd Gen Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M Pr

Asus® U56E-RBL7 Laptop Computer With 15.6' LED-Backlit Screen & 2nd Gen Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M Processor With Turbo Boost 2.0/ 8GB memory/ 750GB hard driveThe U56e is a sleek, aluminum-body unit with an excellent keyboard. Altogether very solid and attractive. Processor is fast enough and memory is more than enough. Battery is phenomenal.

But there is a serious flaw with the Elan touchpad: it's very erratic and unstable. It jerks around, frequently opening apps you didn't intend to, or straying around your document. While I'd done my due diligence research on this unit before purchasing, it wasn't until I'd delved into some geek forums that I discovered others making the same complaint. Several expressed astonishment that ASUS has been letting this flaw pass for years now.

After reporting this problem to ASUS support, they instructed me to reinstall the touchpad and load BIOS default. I did this, but it didn't correct the problem, which I assume is uncorrectable after reading about it in the forums. In the end, I bought an external wireless mouse.

I wish I could recommend ASUS to friends, but this mouse issue is so fundamental, I cannot do so. And it is truly jawdropping that ASUS would let this problem go on for years without intervention.

I've had this laptop about 3 mos. For the most part I love it. It's fast, clear, thin, light, and doesn't get hot. I've had it on my lap for about 1 hour and it's fine barely warm. Yes, the battery makes it heavier, but compared to other laptops the same size it's great. I love the full keyboard with number pad.

The mouse pad is okay not as smooth or large as macs, but better than most PC mouse pads. I use it with a wireless mouse they are cheap and very good these days. There's a youtube vid on this laptop and the guy comments that the dvd drive is very sensitive I haven't used mine for burning yet. The speakers are definitely small but I think they had to do this to get the profile so thin. If you use a laptop for music you should probably have separate speakers anyway.

I bought this product about a year ago from a big box store for about $500 during a sale. Overall I have been very happy with the product.

The greatest appeal to this laptop is it's power and it's battery life.

On a full charge this thing can go about five hours. And while you may not have a the best processor or video card, I can still play games like Oblivion and Starcraft II on it at decent quality.

Like others have said, the touch pad is a bit too sensitive. I have often bumped it and unintentionally clicked things.

I have used the laptop heavily for a year and a half now and the battery is beginning to show it's wear. It's only doing about 3 hours on a full charge now.

My only other gripe is cosmetic. Some of the letters too quickly wore off. The left mouse button got worn as well.

Overall I am satisfied with my purchase. The laptop runs quickly, quietly, and coolly.

I bought a U56E-BBL5 last year and the motherboard began to fail at about 13 months (unit kept randomly shutting itself off). By 16 months, the motherboard rendered the laptop unusable. ASUS would not honor the repair even though the unit was just a few months out of warranty. In my opinion, the motherboard was not manufactured to be a durable component and spoils the good features of the laptop since it is not usable without an expensive repair (around $400). ASUS had an opportunity to practice good citizenship and take responsibility for the substandard component but chose not to. I have seen a number of identical complaints involving some ASUS motherboards.

Dell XPS 15 Laptop - High-Octane Entertainment- Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, Intel Core i

Dell XPS 15 Laptop - High-Octane Entertainment- Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium, 64bit, Intel Core i5-460M,NVIDIA® GeForce GT 420M 1GB , 4 GB DDR3, 500 GB HD,Silver Anodized Aluminum 15.6' HD WLED Display with 2.0 MP webcam,8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner, Wireless-N 1000 WirelessPreviously i had owned an HP dv4 laptop with mid range specs and when that one craped out on me i went searching for a really nice laptop to replace it. I decided on the XPS 15 because it is in all aspects an incredible machine. For starters, this thing has a really powerful processor and a great dedicated GeForce graphics card that has thrown through every game I've thrown at it. The hard drive is also pretty fast and offers a good amount of storage space and 4gb of ram is pretty sweet. Basically the internal specs on this thing are really good and will defiantly meet the needs of practically anyone; gamers, digital designers, students, anybody. This laptop is also really nice in its design and does some very smart things that a lot of other laptops don't seem to offer. The chaise is almost entirely made out of aluminum and it feels pretty think; so far i haven't encountered any areas where the metal flexes or makes creaking noises. One of the biggest problems facing the functionality of laptops is the cooling system. On laptops that are not properly ventilated the processor will over heat under enough stress and the laptop will crash (this was the main problem with the dv4). I think the best example of proper laptop cooling can be found in the Asus G73 but the XPS 15 comes in pretty close. On the left hand side of the laptop there is a large heat sink and vent that does a very good job at regulating the temp. To speak to this, while playing Fallout 3 on ultra setting the air coming out of the vent is pretty warm and would feel uncomfortable keeping your hand in front of it but the palm rests and keyboard remain cool to the touch. This thing is built like a tank (personally i hate throwing down a bunch of cash for a laptop only to find its construction feels cheap, this however feels very nicely put together). The track pad is also nice and large and has a slight matte finish that helps your fingers glide across it a bit better. The other two things that really surprised me about this machine were one, the webcam which at 2.0 MP doesn't seem like a lot but actually provides a very nice image, and the speakers. Since getting this laptop i have done away with my desktop speakers because the JBL speakers and subwoffer (yeah its got a subwoffer) sound amazing. This laptop really is amazing and i think it should defiantly be considered by anyone looking to get a new computer.

p.s. I custom built mine on Dell's website only because i wanted to add a backlit keyboard (only $20 extra) but the rest of my components were the standard ones you get when you buy it out right.
