Dell Inspiron i17R-2248MRB 17.3-Inch Laptop (Mars Black)

So far so good. Bought this after a horrible experience with a brand new Toshiba. So far I like it. Good keyboard, beautiful screen. It's a little heavier than I'd hoped (the Toshiba with same screen was at least a pound lighter) but the sound quality on this model is killer. Best laptop sound I've ever run across. This is my first Dell; if it works out it won't be my last. Oh, the fan is a little noisy, but I suspect all these high powered machines run hot.

I am not a big fan of Dell. I am a macbook fan. But I really loved this laptop. I have been using this for over 4months now. I really liked this new line of Inspirons that dell started. I wasnt a big fan of the older inspirons.

Pros:

-very good configuration for that price.

-i got it for 730, after a few days it went down to 699. So current price(799) is a little high for it, and if you wait or try elsewhere you can get it for less.

-awesome display quality obviously because it is HD.

-too good audio quality. it is the best, and for those who need higher volume. Yes, this one gives higher volume too.

-very sturdy compared to the older inspirons, i really loved the design and sturdiness of it.

-very good placement of three usb ports(left,back,right), and has a card reader along with HDMI, vga display. it just has everything you might ever need.

-very good ventilation compared to any other laptop I have ever seen. It does not need another laptop cooler, it has just got enough fans and ventilators to maintain temperature.

Cons(not many):

-I thought this particular config had bluetooth also. either i misunderstood or amazon changed the description later. Anyway, it does NOT have bluetooth.

-ventilation and cooling is awesome, but it does make some sound which some might not like. im fine with it. its not much for me.

-usb placement is fine for me, but for some who might use portable hard drives and connect one to more than one usb ports for additional power to the drive. the placement is not very friendly for such purposes as the usb connector cable might not be that long for your device if it needs two ports.

The Dell Inspiron i17R-2248MRB turned out to be an excellent value. It's a pretty fast laptop with the i5 processor, its one bottleneck might be its on board video. The laptop scored in the Windows Experience Processor 6.7, RAM 5.9, Graphics 4.6, Gaming Graphics 5.3, and Primary hard drive a 5.8 , the keyboard layout is excellent and as an accounting student having a numeric keypad is a must for entering numbers into excel quickly. Although I don't like the awkward key combinations needed to use function keys, they require using the Fn key... I have seen the same awkward key combinations on HP laptops so its not a Dell problem. Every once in a while the laptop will freeze up and then continue to function normally. I read many people have experienced the same problem and it seems the particular hard drive used in this laptop might be to blame. I plan on replacing it with a 7200rmp WD black scorpio after the semester is over. Those HDs are pretty fast and inexpensive. The value is excellent and even better now. I have seen the price of this laptop drop by a hundred dollars at a popular office supply chain making it perhaps one of the best values for a 17.3" laptop with an i5 2.53ghz (2.8ghz turbo) processor with x64 Win 7 with subwoofer and eSata. The glossy design and polished aluminium is very attractive but its a fingerprint magnet. Battery life is less than 3 hours. Laptop doesn't become very hot like some others

So if your looking for a well put together group of features, you found it folks. Well put together over all , as another reviewer noted, its a bit heavy , but its other features overwhelm any desire to reflect to intently on that fact. In short media is crist fast and responsive. Audio is some of the best ive heard from an out of the box unit. I watched a movie on the device for the first time the other night and was stunned at the quality this screen has. I had a older Dell computer so found this one on Amazon with a larger screen and it was a good price and ordered it. It arrived in about 2 days, was very easy to set up. It's a little different using Windows 7 but I really like it. I did have to buy a new computer as my old Dell printer was not compatible with Windows 7, but that was easy enough getting one for under $80.00 that does everything I need. I was really pleasantly surprised to plug in my Canon camera and it downloaded the pictures quickly without installation of software, and actually erased the pictures on my camera after asking.

I'm enjoying the web cam and talking with my son who lives in New York. I'm not the most computer wise person there is, but this computer makes it easy to get around and do the things I like. It is very fast, and this is one thing I was really hoping for as my older Dell's processor was getting slower. Amazon is a great place to order electronics, and I bought the extended warranty through Square Trade which proved much less expensive than if I had brought it through Dell.

Pros: bright screen, great keypad, good "entry level" speakers, fast enough for writing & web surfing

Cons: "clicking" sound from left hinge

I really only use my laptop for my writing assignments and to check email...This laptop is perfect for that. Some back story that would be helpful: This is the 3rd laptop I have purchased in my endeavor to find a replacement for my Toshiba Satellite which has lasted over 5 years. I bought and RETURNED another entry-level Satellite as well as a Gateway; long story short, they weren't better than this Lenovo.

As far as typing goes, it was/is bit of a transition to switch from a basic laptop keypad to one with the numeric keypad at the right something I've never had in a laptop. The good news is that my hand & finger placement on this laptop do not "feel" shifted to the left like they do on the Toshiba Satellite. And there is plenty of space for my large fingers.

2.2 GHz processor and 4 GB of ram is all I need for what I do. I don't "game" or do any heavy graphics editing on this laptop. The boot up is quick and applications start very quickly. I have noticed on the Toshiba that when I listened to music and opened other applications that the music would "stutter" or pause while the processor caught up with the application. That was NOT the case with this Lenovo and multi-tasking is effortless here.

As I stated above, I also like to listen to music when I work which can be a trial on most entry level laptops. The speakers on this Lenovo are really good way better than the Toshiba (sounded like cell phone speakers) and is as good or better than the Gateway. Remember, this is a basic laptop so you won't be able to jam out with big bass.

One thing that bugs me about this Lenovo: when you flip up the screen and push it all the way back, the left hinge makes this "clicking" sound. The sound repeats when you wiggle the screen back & forth at this point. I'm believe it's the "build" of the laptop and not a mechanical fault as I noticed it on the floor model. I can live with it, personally. I've never noticed anything like it on other laptops, but when you're buying in this price range, you have to take the bad with the good.

Overall, if this laptop will be for you, it will suit your needs if you'll be only doing the basic administrative type tasks. If you're purchasing this for a "gamer," it won't be powerful enough.

The laptop arrived very quickly and in good shape. It was packaged in the original Lenovo box with a Lenovo seal. We have been using it for a while and have had no problems. It was a replacement for my wife's old hp laptop, and she has been very satisfied with its performance.

I know is an expensive machine but:

I use it every day and carry it on my bagpack so the weight was a very important issue

It doesn't get hot even while charging and the battery last for almost 6 hours with wifi or 3g (not included) so if you are not going to use it for long you don't have to carry the charger AND even the charger isn't heavy but it does get kind of hot

My sister needed a laptop ASAP and this was the best deal I could find (even looking at DealNews, etc). I was initially wary of buying this since the reviewer who gave it one star said it wasn't an i5, but an i3 that's in the box. I called Amazon and customer service contacted Dell on my behalf, confirmed that it is an i5 processor, and provided me with a direct line to the Dell rep if I had additional questions. They also reaffirmed that if the item wasn't as described that a return would be simple and at no cost to me. I placed my order and it arrived at my door in one day. It's a slick looking machine and it is in fact an i5 processor. 5 Stars for the product, Amazon's handling of my questions, and their rapid delivery.

The amazon description and the side of the box says the processor is a core i5 but the laptop inside is really an i3. When I looked up the service code on the side of the box on Dell's website it also said it configured with an i3. That's why the price is so cheap. Returing product because it is not as described.

This is a fine, fast laptop, that has performed well ever since I got it. My only complaint is a missbehaving letter "I" key, whose spring does not return it to its "rest" position every time I use it (even though it still works).

Brother needed a new laptop and this 17R fit the bill. Processor is i5 as described, 6GB of RAM and the correct HDD. Works well for his needs, nice big screen and good price.

Purchasing a used laptop was a risk and we weren't sure if it was worth taking....until we used this Dell for over a month. We couldn't be happier with our purchase! The only downside to this product is that Microsoft Office did not come installed on this notebook. However, the seller was prompt and the computer arrived intact and in just a few days. Lenovo Thinkpad X200 12.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 6.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows XP Pro)

First, please note that I'm reviewing the actual computer and not any vendor nor the manufacturer's customer service.

Thinkpads, generally in my experience have by far the best laptop keyboards I've used. This is my fifth (at least) Thinkpad and my second X series (previous was X60). I have found them all to be remarkably reliable with excellent ergonomics. I especially love small touches, like the little mouse in the center of the keyboard (looks like a pencil eraser). Thinkpad seems to have the only truly effective implementation compared to other I've tried such as Toshiba. Also 3 USB ports. Nice. VERY lightweight, speedy enough. I LIKE that they did not put a cd/dvd drive in this unit. I'd rather use external given how infrequently I need it. X200 has built-in camera I still have not figured out how to turn it off so careful with your attire while surfing Facebook y'all!

So I am thrilled with this unit, loved my X60 for the 2+ years that I had it, and the T series before that. These things seem designed for "road warriors" like me.

Also be sure to get the small travelers A/C adaptor that Lenovo sells for these. I think I paid $35 for mine. Nice.

I have the x200 with extended life battery and 2.4 ghz processor widows 7. This is an amzing little machine. It's built like a tank, and the battery life is incredible. I get about 10 hours!! IBM/Lenovo has been building workhorses for business use for years. They know what they are doing.

The other two reviews that gave it a low rating had nothing to do with the laptop. It was their experiences that were the issue not the laptop itself. If you turned down this laptop based on those reviews you would be missing out on a very nice machine.

This is an excellent laptop and I highly recommend it. I've had mine for a couple of years now and have never had a problem with it. I have upgraded to Win7 since then and have a total of 4GB RAM (which is the max for this laptop hardware wise).

I am in IT field and need a reliable, ultra-portable laptop that has plenty of 'horse-power' to run several applications that I rely on. The X200 fits that perfectly.

I am fairly rough on my laptop and yet it still runs without a problem.

Pros: Light-weight, portable, great battery life, reliable, nice features (roll cage to protect against bumps, spill-resistant keyboard), price is just right, Lenovo's website for downloads (drivers and software) is always up to date

Cons: The finish on the top of it is not that durable. The lid on mine got scratched up a little bit. I ended up buying a 'skin' to go on the top of it to hide the scuff marks.

I didn't get my X200 off of Amazon, but rather got it used a couple of months ago... mine's sitting around the same specifications, though.

I've used ThinkPads for the past six years and I'm leaning towards saying that my X200 is probably the best notebook I've ever used, ThinkPad or not. The build quality is excellent and the system feels very durable. It's quite lightweight, although I'm only getting about four hours of life out of a 6-cell battery. The power is definitely there as well... I'm starting to learn 3D modeling apps using Poser 7, and so far this machine has done all my renders quickly. I can also run some light games on here, as well.

Ergonomically it's a great system as well... it's got a full-sized keyboard, and the WXGA resolution is a great upgrade from the previous X60/X61. Typing and other keyboard work for long stretches is a breeze, although my hands do feel a little cramped from the short palmrest. The X200 also runs very cool... it's a notebook you can actually use on your lap, if so inclined.

If you've been looking at netbooks and like the size and weight, but wanted something with more guts, this might be a great machine for you. With prices on these dropping a bit since the release of the X201, it's a good time to pick up a great notebook for a great price.

I have a SL410 but Amazon no longer sells it, so writing this here.

Bought a Toshiba laptop weeks ago then returned it. It was OK but it looked and felt cheap with the very high gloss surface had to constantly wipe it down. The thinkpads have a matte finish, much better.

Also the Toshiba Laptop had these annoying popup windows that would appear reminding me to upgrade and buy software.

The touch pad is great very accurate, also much better then my toshiba.

Only had mine a few a couple weeks and am impressed overall.

I've been a electronics tech for 20 years and a IT degree, I can say these are made very well. The connectors and interface are well designed. Just wish mine was a little lighter the 410 is about 5lbs.

Lenovo IdeaPad U310 13.1-Inch Touchscreen Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Got for $599 last week from another vendor. First Lenovo and I am happy with purchase and tech support. First one received did have dead pixel on arrival but vendor instantly sent me a replacement with next day Saturday delivery. This is an upgrade from my 4years old Samsung netbook which served me very well. I find the u310 touch to be very fast, screen is very nice and clear after making fine adjustments, track pad very smooth after making fine adjustments, touch screen a nice addition. Did not have any dropped WIFI connection and have found operational distance to be good. Very nice build and like the aluminum outer shell.

Windows 8 must be given a chance. Like everyone else and based on bad reviews I did not want to give it a try and was going to install Windows 7 the next day. After playing with it for a day I realized that it is not as bad as everyone that didn't give it a try had stated. It was like having a touch pad and laptop in one. Being that I don't have a touch pad anything this was nice for me as I can download apps from Microsoft and use them accordingly. It was just a matter of knowing where everything has been relocated to. God Mode is great addition to the OS allowing one location for all kinds of adjustments. Desktop was a bit frustrating at first as I did not know where everything was relocated to, especially the Start menu. After reading up on tricks and tips articles there are third party software that adds Start menu back to desktop. I installed Start8 and now desktop works just like Windows 7. All my old software that worked on Windows 7 work just as well or better on Windows 8. Very happy with my purchase. Only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I had to adjust quite a few settings to make it work to my liking.

30 Days Update -

Having used my u310 Touch for 30 days now I'm enjoying Windows 8. The option of having a tablet apps platform is very welcomed. It is like having 2 devices in one. The live windows in the apps are nice but bear in mind it will keep your ram running at 50% and draw on battery power. You can turn off the apps live windows.

The touch screen is very responsive and smooth. I have 2 iPads in the family and the u310's touchscreen is comparable. Although I have used it occasionally it is a nice option to have.

Desktop is working great with installation of Start8, I don't miss Windows 7 at all. Lenovo tech support has been great. I had a few more kinks to get out and all it needed was driver updates. I called Lenovo tech support and they took care of the needed updates for me. I had an Acer before purchasing the Lenovo and when I called about an issue the Acer tech support just instructed me to go to their website and download & install the latest drivers.

The 2 drivers needing updates for me are the Mouse/Touchpad and Lenovo Power Management. Mouse/Touchpad was getting stuck when I right click & hold down to highlight or to activate scroll bar. Driver update corrected the problems.

Battery life for me is averaging 4.5-5 hours. Not great but not too bad.

Speakers are nice and loud enough for my needs. I have not had volume turned up more than 50% setting. Computer speakers are what they are and I never expect to listen to room filling music sound from them. The Acer I returned was so "tinny" that it hurt to hear sound from them.

No problems at all with wifi connections.

Processor is fast and smooth. When warranty is up I will upgrade to 8gig ram.

Although a lot of tweaks to get this ultrabook to perform to my preferences I am still very much enjoying it and for me it's a keeper.

I recently was in the market for a laptop for school, as my old macbook's days are numbered. I originally was looking to get a macbook pro, but after doing some research and looking around I landed on this Lenovo Ideapad. I really like the build quailty, it feels very sturdy and has a refined look. The touchscreen is also a must for Windows 8, it comes in handy quite often. It boots up extremely fast, and runs very cool. I also saved about $600 over the Macbook pro, so I was very pleased. For the price, you can get a Lenovo Ideapad and a new iPad instead of just a macbook, can't really beat that.

Pros:

Runs cool

Great battery life: I get about 5 hours watching video, and 8 hours doing surfing or typing documents.

Very thin and light

Cons:

Screen does get fingerprints, guess that's to be expected though.

As with all new laptops, has a good amount of bloatware. I got rid of most of it, and it does run even faster now.

Not sure why I keep reading about the wireless issues? Mine has been great since I got it, not one issue. I heard they fixed this back in July of last year, with the introduction of the touch screen models.

In conclusion, this is a great laptop. It runs fast and cool, has an awesome touchscreen and has great battery life. For the price of only $599, it is hard to find anything even close to this laptop (believe me I have looked around). Lenovo is quality, and this laptop is no exception. I recommend this product to anyone wanting a nice light and thin laptop with great battery life. This is great for students!

I've nothing to complain about with this purchase, which is saying something, indeed. Once upon a time, you had to pay high prices for the power to support a multimedia and gaming platform, and I tend to buy very high-powered laptops over the years as a rule, because I cannot stand the performance of machines that are designed to be energy efficient and preserve battery life. While this isn't on the level of getting an overclocked i7 desktop with the latest Nvidia graphics card and liquid cooling ... let me put it this way: it's so efficient it doesn't need the cooling. For comparison, this is replacing an old 2006 Vaio laptop of mine that runs XP (not one of my high-powered machines, but one that I had converted for multimedia use). Merely playing a lot of youtube videos on that old Vaio would cause that machine to run so remarkably hot that it was painful to touch. This Lenovo, however, stays very cool for the entire duration of playing movies or games. W/r to games, unless you're playing the most demanding games (e.g., Skyrim or SWTOR with the highest details and options set), you likely won't notice any performance issues, either.

The real attraction of this laptop, however, is its touchscreen. I was unwilling to purchase a Windows 8 laptop without a touchscreen mostly because Windows 8 -begsfor touchscreen capability, as the mouse/keyboard alternatives aren't exactly intuitive. This is a nice, small, light laptop that does just about everything you might ever ask of it (outside of the most performance-demanding video games), and has full touchscreen capability with all of the Windows 8 touchscreen-enabled apps ready to go. Add Office 365 and VPN, and it fulfills work, play, email, video needs.

It's interesting what they leave off, to keep it small and light: it has no CD/DVD drive. Once upon a time, CD technology was fast and light and way more efficient than the alternatives. Now, it's far more economical to stream videos on the fly, or download games online services, instead of buying several CDs or DVDs to install/play. Technology is still leaping ahead, folks, in spite of the current economy, and this is a remarkably frugal means to get the latest tech and play with it.

For the record, this is the 3rd laptop I've bought from Amazon, and I find shopping for laptops this way to be far superior to checking out whatever happens to be in stock at local stores. The detail in the description and reviews is more than enough to determine whether it is a good purchase. I'm used to being disappointed. I expect disappointment. I was always disappointed with store-purchased laptops. Amazon-purchased laptops haven't disappointed me yet.

The only issues that I might imagine anyone having with this laptop are that it's Windows 8, and the UI is very touchscreen-oriented. If you aren't used to the new OS or touchscreens, it can be a bit of a leap from Windows 7 with mouse and keyboard.

Got it this afternoon, and typing on it.

It feels really nice, beats my expectation. It is nice looking, thin and light (compared to my 6 pounds E430). It is fast enough for my need programing, web browsing, watching video, editing picture etc. The display is better than expectation too, even readable under direct sun when set it to highest brightness.

Touch screen is good, and very useful too.

But, wifi, what should I say, so disappointing.

When it closes to the wifi access points, it works great. But when moving far away, the download speed dramatically reduced, sometimes even disconnected.

Here is my test results comparing to other laptops (response time/download/upload, I tested 3 times each access points, exact same location)

1. HP DM4(i5): 43 ms/9.53M/1.35M

2. Lenovo Edge E420 (i3): 35 ms/10.02M/1.42M, similar for the other access point.

3. Lenovo Edge E430 (i7): 35 ms/10.56M/1.41M, similar for the other access point.

4. U310: 135 ms/0.89M/0.67M for one access point, 415 ms/0.14/0.36 for another access point and disconnected several times during testing.

I also tested it using a Airlink 101 wireless dangle, with it, I got more than 11M download speed.

I really love it, but can not accept the low wifi speed. I am thinking switch to another one and give Lenovo another chance.

BTW, this is made in April 2013.

Updated: I tried another one, similar results. I test against two wifi routers and all set to N/G combined. I updated drivers, and did all the tricks I can find from web. No go.

I tried a Yoga 13, got very good wifi reception. I think I may keep the Yoga.

Pros: Looks nice and is solidly built. My previous laptop was 5.3 pounds, this feels like a feather in comparison. Responsive touchscreen, Achieved over a 6 hour battery life at this price point (screen brightness set to 40%). Stays very cool to the touch.

The keyboard is well spaced out for a 13.3" ultrabook; the keys have great action and the keyboard isn't too small for my somewhat large hands.

I felt that I was taking a chance with a Lenovo ultrabook as there have been reports of Wi-Fi issues with previous models. I'm happy to report that this is not the case here at all. I have yet to have a single drop and have experienced fast speeds.

My only gripe is that the screen smears rather easily. This isn't usually noticeable until you turn off the machine. I just keep a box of electronic wipes handy.

All in all, this is a great little machine with sufficient power and ultrabook portability. The touchscreen even makes windows 8 fun to use! (I was very reluctant to try windows 8)

Just got the laptop. good price for all the features, expandable to 8g ram 2.6ghz dual core processor works great. has a cool little media quick launch button that starts up either hulu or netflix right away. the keyboard is a little off spacing wise but that could just be because im used to my toshiba that kicked the bucket. so far smooth. everyting started up great, streams movies to my tv though the hdmi. will let yall know if any problems arise. ohh a quick note that i think all the major laptop companies are changing their touch mouse thing. it takes a little getting used to but i didnt see much of any other option out there. there are no real buttons just one flat touch pad. i had to knock down the sensitivity on mine

I purchased this laptop in August 2010 and I am so so satisfied with this laptop. It is so efficient, fast, crisp, clear, and many functions....I love the media dock,it ables you to log in to your webcam see movies video. This laptop is the bomb! The web cam is so clear and the added function are cool. I would recomemend this laptop to anyone who is looking to get much much more for there money.

This laptop is a perfect computer for people who need a reliable everyday computer. This is definitely not for anyone looking to do any gaming.

One potential con: The keyboard has keys on the far left that boot up different programs. If you are not careful, you could boot up some of these programs, but it takes getting used to. After about a week of having this laptop, I've gotten used to the placement of the buttons, and I am having no problems with the keyboard.

Several pros:

I recently purchased this laptop off amazon & I am so glad I did !

Pros: Webcam has tons of fun features similiar to those of macs. It also allows you to webchat in dimly lit rooms. The computer itself runs very smoothly thanks to the processor & amount of memory. I really like the gadgets that you can add to the desktop, they have downloadable ones off their website too.

Cons: Keyboard takes some getting used too. I had a toshiba before and although ive had this laptop a week, Im still having trouble getting used to the keys. Also, I really wish the laptop was lit in the dark.

Overall a really great buy! Especially if you have a lot of music/videos/etc.

HP ENVY 17-2090NR Notebook - Silver

I have owned this unit since 6/2/11, even though I bought it somewhere else. This system is a true desktop replacement with the latest 2nd generation Sandy Bridge i7 quad-core cpu. 8GB RAM & dual 750GB hard drives (configured as one 1.5TB drive).

I'm not much of a gamer but do play occasionally. Driving games look especially good using the TriDef 3D software to launch the game. The system ships with one pair of active shutter 3D glasses. The 3D effects in games and movies is fun but I find it tiring to wear the 3D glasses for prolonged periods of time.

Applications perform blazingly fast. I use CorelDraw X3 a lot and performance on the Envy is perfect. I use Womble MPEG Video Wizard DVD for video editing and Handbrake to convert video files to portable format for my DroidX. The Envy processes everything much faster than my old Thinkpad.

I did update the drivers and BIOS the day I got the system. I had read about issues regarding cpu throttling and knew the BIOS update would fix the issue.

I have no real complaints with this system. Sure it is heavy and the battery life is not that great (it comes with two batteries though) but then again, I didn't buy this to haul around with me everywhere I go. I have a netbook which fills that role.

If you are looking for a very fast system in a semi-portable form factor then it is hard to beat the HP Envy. You definitely get your money's worth.

Within the first few days of purchasing this product, I began to experience issues. These issues included random shutdowns, random freezing (completely unresponsive) and periodic slowdowns. As a customer with standard warranty, I spoke with HP technical service. After my personal experience, it would be a compliment to call their service incompetent. On the first call with HP, I discussed the issues I was having to a technician. She asked me to do various tasks as my computer could not be remotely accessed by HP. The call was concluded with her telling me to call back should the problem arise after I had taken specific actions. The problems still persisted and I called again. The phone was answered by a man who spoke broken English. I asked to be transferred to a different technician and my request was granted. After 5 minutes of being put on hold, I was transferred to another technician. Unfortunately, 10 minutes later the technician transferred me to another department because he informed me that his department was not responsible for HP Envy laptops. After another 5 minutes, the same process repeated until I was finally connected to the HP Envy department. Sadly, the technician decided to hang up on me. On the third call I spoke finally spoke to the right technician. After giving him my ticket number, describing my issues and telling him the previous actions that were taken, he concluded our conversation saying that I should call him when my computer froze...

If you plan on buying HP, beware. Should any issues arise, you will not find any real help at HP.

I must admit that this is the worst laptop I have ever bought in my life and that too for such a huge price.

The bluray player does not read properly. I keep getting the error, "insert disc". The system shuts down so often due to heat.

This occurs especially if you are watching Youtube videos or any other flash content or playing movie. This is very true if you travel around the world where it is hot and humid.

With in a year or two, the laptop has completely crashed with a motherboard failure and now I have to spend money from my pocket again to fix this.

3D is useless !!! On left eye I can see some % of right eye and the same on right eye. So that is very very annoying. Software to veiew 3D is very very slow. To measure time from click button to finaly see picture on screen you not need stoper/watch rather calendar.

I have used many laptops but never seen so bad tuchpad even in 300$ laptops. This itself make the laptop complately usless as a laptop (if you have to carry mouse everywhere).

The speed of this laptop match others in this category but for much lower price without 3D. Speed very good indeed but ...

If you want just a speed get many laptops which are as fast but cheper without 3D

If you want 3D this is not one for 3D look at any high contrast 3D scene and you will see on both eyes nearly same like you will be watching without glasses.

I bought this laptop a few months back ...

I have had nothing but problems with it !!!

With in the first month the heat sink stopped working, had to send it back to Hp to get it fixed.

That took almost 8-10 days..

Then the laptop started crashing every time i would run movies or videos.

I thought it was a problem with the operating system, but technicians at Microsoft told me

that the error number suggested that it was a hardware problem(mostly with the processor or motherboard)

So I had to send it back again to Hp.

I took them 2 weeks to figure out what the problem was even after i specifically told them what was

happening, because the call center person who i spoke to entered the data wrong(even after i repeated it twice)

Now since last week i m again having problems with the laptop.

Its heating up like crazy & shutting down.

I plan to send it back & ask Hp for my money back,

I have learnt my lesson, NEVER to buy Hp again.. Bad products & worse support you will ever find.

This computer is sturdy and did not take long for me to set-up my settings and WIFI on it....Immediately the internet worked...It took longer on setting up my monitor screen since I use a 23" Dell Screen attached by VGA adapter to my laptop so I can have dual screens to use...I like having a bigger screen to look at! I bought a demo unit of this machine in 2007 from an Office Depot, and reinstalled from disc (any legitimate MT6705 -even demo models -came with discs, unlike that of one of the reviewers, apparently).

It has worked flawlessly ever since, other than things I dislike about Vista (had to do serious workarounds to install software that was safe and secure and updated -so there was no reason to use multiple measures to prevent it -but whose developers had not paid a royalty to Microsoft. If you use exclusively software desired my Microsoft, it will install like a dream)

The screen is bright and beautiful, the machine runs fast (probably helped by my adding RAM to arrive at its 2Gig maximum), and I get decent battery life for a machine this size.

In my case, I do not keep the screen at full brightness in order to save power and heat, but it still looks very nice. I use it primarily for Internet access, running programs (C, java, etc.), using the webcam, making CDs.

The only problem I ever had with it is that in its initial configuration, it would yank down the wireless card when you unplugged the unit's power source, and to get it back you have to use hotkeys Fn-F2 (using control panel's networking commands to try to enable/disable wireless did NOT get it working, only the hotkeys did -had to have a friend look them up for me on his computer since I couldn't get online to find out for myself;-) I believe that configuring "power options" in the control panel was what solved this for me.

I have not had the power supply problems. Perhaps my electric supplier has a more clean, regulated power supply, or perhaps it really did help that I have always had it plugged into an APC surge protector instead of directly into a wall outlet.

In 2011 I am still using it.

We bought a Gateway and Windows got hosed for some reason. We called 1-800-GATEWAY for support. Guess what? If you buy a Gateway anywhere but their website you must call a separate toll number. WTF!? Then we needed to restore it but the restore partition was bad. Had to get the recovery disk. They charged me $20 for a $1 CD-R. Then it wouldn't work, and they wanted to charge me to tell me how to use it. Again WTF? These people are horrible. Save yourself a lot of trouble and get a Mac. Get HP. Get an abacus. Anything but a Gateway.

Toshiba M305-S4910 14.1-Inch Widescreen Satellite Laptop

All I have to say is that I bought this laptop also from Best Buy and I LOVE it. As an IT guy with nearly 10 years of experience, this little guy is well worth the investment. What I like most are the keys. I normally type 60+ wpm but the way that the keys are designed, it seems like its 70+. Very ergonomic. Battery life is great and with the amount of RAM the performance is exceptional. Very slick look! Highly recommended.

The price was so right! I bought this computer recently and it is a work horse, I love all of the things it can do. My problem is the design of the screen, it cannot open all the way which drives me nuts. The screen stands vertical, not good. Frequent pushing on the screen will damage the machine eventually, other laptops that I own, open like a book, not this one, it barely opens half way. Other than that it would have been just what I needed so I'm returning it.

Bought two of these at the same time. Didn't move them around much; his was mostly used to read the newspaper in the morning, check email, and watch an occasional movie, and mine was used to check email and fiddle around with Photoshop here and there. We also both use Skype once in awhile; the camera quality wasn't good, but it did the job. Both worked well for awhile the keyboard is easy to type on, the harmon/kardon speakers are a nice touch, and no complaints in general. Just over a year in, his camera stopped working; technical support said they couldn't do anything about it and were generally unhelpful. About a year and a half in, my computer's screen started flickering/flashing once every ten seconds or so. If turned off for a day or two, it would be fine again for awhile. Again, technical support was completely unhelpful. But this is the reason I would not buy a Toshiba product again: my power cord died two weeks ago, and his died one week ago. They died within a week of each other! We have no pets who could chew wires, don't move the laptops around much, and shut the power on the power strip at night / when we're not around. I called Toshiba's technical AND customer support and asked if they would replace these, as they seem to be lemons. Both were polite enough, but refused to help in any way, and could not offer anythingno replacements, no discounts, nothing. I will absolutely not shell out $140 for two new power cords when these two died after two years; my last power cord lasted almost seven years. I know generic replacements are available for pretty cheap, but it was more the principle that incensed me. So much for standing behind your products. I would not recommend the laptops and would not recommend Toshiba products unless you buy with the knowledge that you are on your own once your warranty expires.

Acer Aspire V3-571G-9683 15.6-Inch Laptop (Midnight Black)

This is the perfect laptop for anyone looking for a gaming laptop for under $1000. All the games I've tried on it have run perfectly, the most difficult probably being Skyrim, which ran perfectly on ultra settings. The laptop is very aesthetically appealing in my opinion (although some reviews for Acer Aspire V3 computer's said it was not attractive, I completely disagree). The main upside is gaming, but it also has a great keyboard which is very important to me as a college student, the screen is great, which is awesome for me because of netflix. The biggest issue I have with the design of the laptop is with the location of the track pad, and the buttons on the track pad. I was just playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 (which works perfectly), and my left hand would occasionally tap the track pad, causing my gun to fire at random. The buttons at the bottom of the track pad are frustratingly bad, but since I use a mouse that is not a big deal; the track pad is touch sensitive, and you can scroll up and down on the side of the track pad which is a nice feature.

Of course, the biggest issue most people have with newer Acers is with Windows 8; at first I found windows 8 incredibly frustrating, but within a couple days I got used to it. The only major difference is that instead of a start button where a sidebar pops up (like windows 7), you open up a start screen which has a tablet-esque feel to it. The start screen is slightly worse in my opinion, but not enough so that I feel the need to switch to windows 7. One thing that I don't care about, but others may love, is that there is a full numbers pad on the side of the keyboard, which would be great for programming or accounting or something like that. I have yet to use it, but others may love it.

The worst thing about this computer is its poor battery life, with full brightness you might get 2-3 hours, whereas my old hp pavillion dm4 got about double that. This doesn't bother me excessively because I almost always have a computer cord handy, but if you plan on taking this on the go don't count on a great battery. Of course an easy fix is to buy another battery (preferably with a lot more mAh) for about $50.

Pros: Great Graphics card, great processor, good GPU and enough GB hard drive make this a great gaming computer; screen resolution; nice keyboard; the ports (headphones, usb etc.) are tighter than usual which means your headphones won't fall out easily;

Average: speakers; screen size; Windows 8; start up time; internet connection;

Cons: Poor battery and heavier-than-average weight make this computer not particularly portable; Track pad location is bad (when you first get it the track pad will seem kind of sticky which will be annoying but this goes away quickly); comes with too much junk previously installed (for example who wants an ebay app installed on their computer?);

Note: Windows 8 will not let you do certain things because the original account you create will be called administrator but will not have full access to everything to prevent you from screwing things up. There is a simple fix to this, go to command prompt and type some stuff in you can find online and you will be able to log into the real administrator account.

Also, I definitely recommend a mouse (I think Logitech is the best) because the buttons on the track pad and the location of the track pad are abysmal.

Edit: Extremely fast start up speed, under 10 seconds.

Edit: As the comment below says, if you hit fn+f7 it will shut off the trackpad so you don't accidentally click it while playing a game.

I've just recently bought this laptop and it exceeds expectations! I bought this computer for playing games and watching movies on netflix. This computer can not only play games on high/ultra graphics but also has a great display. Watching movies on it is great. The problem I have with this laptop is the short battery life. I get around 3 hours when gaming on high settings but I usually keep it plugged in so not a big problem. Another con with it is the placement of the track pad. I end up occasionally tapping the track pad when playing games causing something I don't want to happen. To fix this I bought a USB mouse. This laptop has been great for what I need it for and hopefully you'll love it two.

Save for the one or two special keys that were mixed up on the keyboard (easily overlooked as they are few and far between) and my unfortunate first time encounter with the confounded mass of unnecessary options that is Windows 8 (Remedy: Only use the desktop and you're golden), the laptop performs above my expectations and at a fair price. I could also nitpick at some discomforts like where volume control and brightness adjustment were placed, but its hardly an issue and more a personal preference. This product is powerful, thumbs up!

This laptop came to me via Acer without the Operating System, Windows 8, being installed on the laptop. This of course, makes the laptop unusable. Customer support was rude, and I had to end up speaking to corporate customer service in order to get the Os disc's shipped in a timely manner. I expect them on Tuesday. The laptops itself looks nice, and seems very sturdy, yet thin and light in weight. The keyboard is nice and well built and is similar in style to a Mac if you like that sort of thing. The screen is nice, but the border(also called the bevel)could have been much thinner, more like an ultrabooks. The computer seems to boot quickly. I'll update more after I have actually installed the OS. The lack of an Os is what made me give this laptop a low rating. Watch out for ACER's customer service. Keep asking for the supervisor, and you will finally get somewhere.

I received a used Latitude D820 recently and have been very pleased with its performance. The battery life is good, the performance has been robust and responsive. The only thing I find missing on this computer is a webcam. The speakers are a little tinny, but with headphones the sound is great. I like the nice large screen too! Enjoying my Latitude D820!

This machine is extremely durable. Despite what others might say about it running apps slowly, they don't know how to manage their OS. This machine can run any application, including Adobe Creative Suite apps well. Sure, it's not the fastest thing on the market, but it's a 2.0 dual core CPU, it's a great deal, and for any student/office person trying to save money while still getting things done, it's a great buy. The hardware holds up great, and don't let others tell you it's slow because of how they treat their OS.

This is a great laptop, solid, easy to use, I like that it locks when closed. I didn't find it to be slow as others have said. The keyboard keys are slightly raised, which I liked. The only minor things I didn't like was no numbers pad, so I had to use the numbers across the top, it's a very HEAVY laptop, but worst of all, the battery life was really bad. Two hours max, and it wasn't just my battery, I ordered a backup and it was the same way.

The laptop works okay. It is a little slow and the display fonts are very small. Was able to enlarge them some. Since it is an older laptop you can't expect "like new" and you don't get it. Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5357 Laptop C855D-S5357

This is a very basic, low-level laptop. It's not necessarily bad, it's just not that great either. Loads slow, video buffers a lot and system stutters when browsing through panels in the W8 modern UI. Perhaps with a little more RAM it might run faster, but I don't want to have to upgrade a laptop right out of the box. If money is an issue, this will work, but you can probably find something perhaps $50 more that may be a bit better out of the box.

Purchased this on cyber Monday, received the laptop in 2 days...so far so good, I have to get use to Windows 8, but I love the format. The keyboard is slick, the laptop is light, easy to open and shut....Will give a later review after messing around with for a month or two.

My old Dell's screen went out, so I began a search on which laptop would be as reliable but have more space. I purchased this laptop (toshiba satellite c855-ds5357) around November of 2012 I am SHOCKED at how slowly it processes. I don't have it bogged down. I can have only one window open, but videos lag and look choppy. It takes me an hour to process a Fed Ex print order that used to take me only 5-10 minutes because page changes are S-l-O-W. Customer support was a joke they told me 2 months ago that I didn't have a warranty. It was supposed to come with a 1 year couldn't understand their CS Rep but I knew he was trying to sell me more stuff that I didn't need. What I needed was a reliable computer that did what it was supposed to.

It's pretty but it's garbage.

Run away folks. Bad news in Toshiba land.

Windows 8 is less than perfect however, bought this as a gift, set it up with a classic start menu app and the OS is now tolerable. The laptop is a great value for the price!

I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THIS PRODUCT, BECAUSE IT WAS A CHRISTMAS PRESENT BOUGHT IN NOV AND GIVEN AT CHRISTMAS BY TIME IT WAS FIRST USED THE 30 DAY WARRANTY FROM THE SELLER(AMAZON) HAD EXPIRED. HAD TO GO TO THE TOSHIBA COMPANY FOR SERVICE, AND PAY FOR THE SHIPPING CONTAINER AND THE COST OF SHIPPING IT BACK TO THE REPAIR CENTER. (THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE HARDDRIVE) AFTER RECEIPT OF RETURNED REPAIR FOUND ANOTHER PROBLEM, REFUSED TO PAY AGAIN FOR SHIPPING AND THE COMPANY WOULD NOT ISSUE A REPAIR ORDER UNLESS I PREPAID THE SHIPPING, AND SO I AM STUCK WITH IT AS IS. HP Pavilion dv6-3250us 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver)

An awesome laptop. Very good looking design (argento on brushed aluminum). Feels sturdy in hand. All the bells and whistles as per the specifications including a backlit keyboard (which was really the selling point for me). Only problem and I mean the ONLY problem for me is the click/touch pad... to click on an item and/or drag and drop is kind of cumbersome to execute...the click part of the pad feels a bit stiff or too far down from the location I'm used to it being in on other laptops...but I figure I'll get used to it after a while. What I think would have been great to just make this the ideal compact and economical merge of hardware vs. price would be integrated bluetooth. But no sweat for me I already had an IOgear bluetooth dongle to connect....Again, awesome laptop!

*UPDATE* I've recently discovered a work-around to my "only problem". The configurations for the touch pad allows you to set a double tap action as a means of dragging and dropping as well as selecting an item or an entire phrase/page in a document or web page. Quite nifty. So no more problems, just a great deal on a good laptop.

I spent a good two weeks comparing laptops in the $600-$800 range, and this one gets you the most bang for your buck -by far. Huge hard drive, speedy processor, and enough RAM to run Pro Tools 9 (in other words, plenty of RAM). The back-lit keyboard and fingerprint reader are a nice touch, as is the wide screen. Speakers are surprisingly good for a laptop, too. My only qualm is that it comes loaded with useless software -a whole punch of programs and games made by HP and Microsoft that you really don't need. It only took about a half-hour to clear those out, though, and from then on it's been smooth sailing. Also, it doesn't come with a full Microsoft Office Suite, just the starter, which is Word and Excel with these annoying ads. But Word and Excel are clunky and weak compared to Open Office, which you can download and install lickety-split at . Did I mention Open Office is free, too? Goodness I love freeware.

In short: I am a very picky purchaser. I checked every store and website I could find, and if $800 is your limit, BUY THIS LAPTOP. The fingerprint reader will totally amaze your friends.

This laptop is great. The processor is super-fast, backlit keyboard is amazing, and I love the fingerprint scanner. The graphics look great and once you tweak the sound a little, the sound isn't too bad. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone and I can't say enough about the backlit keyboard. It's kind of like getting your first DVR, you didn't see why everyone was making such a big deal about them, but once you get one you can't imagine going without it again.

The price I paid for this computer is well worth it. I LOVE this computer. It is my first HP laptop and the first day I got it I fell in love with the design. Another cool feature that I love about this dv6 is the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. The only disadvantage that I found with the fingerprint reader is that I get so use to it and I forget my password when I am on other computers because I am so use to just swiping my finger and it just logs in for me. One issue that I encountered when I first got it with the fingerprint reader is that whenever I log into pages like facebook, my cursor would become disabled and turn into a cross and not allow me to make any selections. After contacting HP about the issue, we figured out that my internet explorer needed to be updated. I was using the original IE9 that was installed in the computer so I had to update to IE10 and it finally worked to this day. Another issue about this dv6 is the battery life. It says that it can give you about 5 hours of battery life, but it doesn't. After a full charge and I check my battery life it says 3 hours and 45 minutes. When unplugged it does last the three hours and 45 mins. I LOVE that whenever I play a movie on here it automatically asks me to switch over to a power saving mode while watching to movie and extends my battery life. I've kept my laptop on watching movies and doing other things my entire flight from east coast to west coast and still had about 30 minutes remaining when we landed. I LOVE the energy efficient options that it gives. One thing that I'm still trying to figure out is the setting for the webcam. I've used it in really dark rooms and it automatically brightens up the background, but there are so many features to mess with that I haven't gotten around to figuring out the right setting for me. I am still trying to figure out how to turn on the power boost. According to the specs it has 2.66 GHZ but can power boost up to 2.93GHz. It loads the main screen really fast and connect to the internet really fast at 2.66GHz. I just wanted to see how much faster 2.93GHz was. Overall, this laptop is well worth the money. It comes with a 1yr manufactor warranty, but I would contact HP after making this purchase and insure it with accidental damage plus in home care services. It costs about $124.00 for a year, so I'd be sure to take full advantage of that service. :) I guarantee that you will love this computer for this price. Well worth it!! Excellent product and excellent customer service and support from HP.

The computing hardware in this PC are fine and it was cheap to upgrade from 4 GB of RAM to 8. (The price for the computer is cheap and you get what you pay for, plastic case and look.) But there are two big drawbacks to this machine. First the touchpad drives me CRAZY! It is fickle and jumps all over the place. As other reviews have said, you will want to use a mouse or you will be tearing your hair out. Second is the really, really weak and tinny sounding speakers. Even with a good pair of headphones the sound is still like something you would get from a cheap radio with no bass. One other minor problem for me was the extra keys on the left side of the keyboard. I had to get used to moving my hands to the right enough to hit the correct keys. That is more a matter of personal adjustment. But the speakers and the touchpad are really two things you want to think about carefully and might be a reason for hesitation.

Update: I have had this laptop for over a month now and I really have no problems with it EXCEPT for the touchpad. It is THE WORST I have ever used. Attaching a mouse is sometimes a pain but using this touchpad will give your wrist a pain and it causes the cursor to jump on the screen which adds time to any of your tasks. I also upgrades the memory to 8GB and it was pretty easy using memory from Crucial.com. Performance is not a problem. But the touchpad may drive you to another plain of frustration.
