Sony VAIO VPC-EB15FX/BI 15.5-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO VPC-EB15FX/BI 15.5-Inch LaptopGot the brown color just to be different...WOW!! Great looking. Fast, not too much add-on trash software to uninstall. Kinda wish I had gotten the i5 processor (not offered w/Blu-Ray) but this i3 is really a go getter and I'm just as happy. Boots up really quickly, never a blue screen (thanks Windows 7 64bit) and hav had no compatibility issues yet other than difficulty running an old scratchy disk of AOL 9.0. Since AOL on disk didn't load well so I just downloaded it and got the new AOL 9.5 and that runs super. I've had the item for a couple of weeks and placed Word-2003 that works great, my own Norton2010 that I already had (deleted the Norton Trial ware of same name offered). Put my ESPN, NFL, Amazon and EBay and various other web site ICONS up without a hitch. My only issue is the speaker(s) are pathetic. I searched for new drivers but have not found any. Purchased a Case Logic Model R-110 USB laptop speaker and they sound is great although the speaker is kind of awkward.

Connected to my Toshiba 62" HD via the HDMI and Blu-ray and picture and sound were excellent. Its a little clumsy and awkward what with the remote controls, mouse/keypad, and cables but possible. Upgraded my home from a "g" Wifi hotspot to an Extreme-"N" wifi and this laptop flies at 150MBps without a hitch.

Very nice keyboard. I like the IBM/Levono keyboard of my old T22 laptop better but all-in-all this is a fine machine and I recommend to anyone (except gamers). More than likely, gamers will need a separate graphics card but I've never experienced any problems with normal things.

If you want a nice perfect fitting neopreme case (w/handles) get the MICROSOFT I have already reviewed. It fits perfectly.

UPDATE: Gave R-110 to friend and got almost as good sounding but much easier handling Logitech Clip-on Z205 USB Speaker. More very happy (?) with this one. Haven't found any improved drivers for the Sony speakers, they still suck! I recorded in HD one of the NBA playoff games. Sooooooo effin great picture. Windows Media Center works like a TIVO. You can go eat or bathroom and come back and go back to point you left to continue watching and the game has been continued to be recorded. Cool stuff...

Worth buying a 3-year guarantee for it, or choosing a different one.

It worked quite well for me for a while.

Then the VAIO Care software stopped working, with no apparent way to repair or reinstall it.

I had to get used to an error message (about .NET failing) popping up every time I booted it after a few minutes, as there was not way of remedying that; plus the sound was only available after a few minutes after reboot.

The hard drive got damaged (probably our fault), and trying to read affected big files froze or slowed down the machine. Checking the drive froze the machine, and there was no meaningful progress indicator. You can reinstall the system using the built-in Assist function, but it doesn't let you do a repartitioning or deep format before re-installing the system.

The Bluray+DVD drive also stopped working after about two years, although I hardly ever transported the laptop, mostly just used it at home.

At some point, I disabled the built-in BlueTooth adapter. I recently tried to re-enable it, but it doesn't work, even after reinstalling the whole system most probably another hardware failure.

Thirty days after buying it, the spacebar stopped working. Apparently this is a common problem with these notebooks and I am unable to find a fix.

This is a bad laptop. my spacebar didnt work well, so i looked online and found that the problem was widespread with this model. the keys also dont register, there was an issue with zoom i had to fix, and the curser flies all over. it took 20 minutes to write a paragraph because the curser would jump to mid sentance or it would just fly across the screen and click on things. it would rarely register clicks on the first try. it was just bad. i kept it almost to the end of my 2 week window to return it, but i couldnt make it work right. i am so glad i exchanged it because the one i got instead works like a dream.

They call this computer a notebook and it is bigger then my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop????? which is what I will use

as a comparison.

The screen is wider by a couple of inches.

The keyboard has a number pad, so it takes a little getting used to (or back into) the right hand number pad and

having to set up a bit to the left.

It comes with windows 7 which I have never used before as I am a die hard XP user due to the various disasters Mr. Gates has produced since the XP days.

I was a bit surprised with 7, as it is very intuitive, and much like XP (it is probably built on XP software like everything else they produce which is built on DOS, but I regress). So the old codger got into 7 without any ranting and raving; that's a good thing.

As stated, the footprint is wider than the Dell so it takes up more desk space, but not so much that your elbow will slip off the end of the table.

The only bitch I have about the computer is the touch pad; it does not work as well as the Del, so I have ordered a cordless mouse so that I don't throw it against the wall.

The computer is much faster than the Del and 1/3 the price. It will mostly be used for music files and earphoned out to amplified speakers. Oh yea, the speakers are not as good as the Del, so if you want great sound, do as I do.

Acer TimelineU M5-481TG-6814 14-Inch Ultrabook (Gun Metal Gray)

Acer TimelineU M5-481TG-6814 14-Inch UltrabookI have owned the previous model Acer Aspire TimelineX AS4830TG-6450 and upgraded to this model in the past few days -note that this review pertains to the same laptop I purchased from another retailer, although I did purchase a second one from Amazon for a friend.

I will post various technical specs that are not specified in Acer's specifications first:

Battery: Internal, same battery as in Acer Aspire M3 ultrabook, model AP12A3i (31CP7/67/90) 11.1V 4850mA, 54Wh

Hard disk drive (HDD): Western Digital Scorpio Blue, 2.5" SATA, WDC WD5000LPVT-22G33T0, 7mm height, not 9.5mm -replacement SSD must be 7mm height!!!

Optical disk drive (ODD): HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GU61N (9.5mm height), easy to swap with a UJ-232A or UJ-242A for Blu-Ray burning.

Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE, Optimus-based, 384 shaders/CUDA cores, clocked at 500MHz, memory clocked at 10000MHz. v296.32 stock driver

SSD (mSATA PCI-E): Shows up as "SATA SSD" w/ firmware S5FAM014. Same as used in Acer Aspire M3 ultrabook -Acer P/N: KN.0200Q.002, also identified by SSE020GTTC0-S51 AM014

Webcam: "HD WebCam" VID_18CF PID_2C19

Touchpad: Synaptics -ACPI SYN1B60, compatible IDs: SYN1B00, SYN0002, PNP0F13

Ethernet: Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet -PCI\VEN_14E4 DEV_1692 SUBSYS_07121025

WiFi/Bluetooth: Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB222, driver version 10.0.0.42, dated 2/23/2012, PCI\VEN_168C DEV_0034 SUBSYS_E052105B

Onboard audio: Realtek High Definition Audio ALC269 (82801G) chipset, driver date 4/10/2012, version 6.0.1.6612, VEN_10EC DEV_0269 SUBSYS_10250713

A/C adapter: LITEON PA-1650-69, output: 19V DC, 3.42A, 65W max, either blocks vents slightly or ports a bit due to right-angle connection.

Backlit keyboard can be enabled/disabled via Fn+F9 key.

Processor Tj. Max is 105 C.

The 20GB SSD has a 4GB hibernation partition (which will have to be changed if RAM is upgraded) and a 14.64 GB partition used for caching via installed ExpressCache software from Diskeeper. There is a 16GB hidden recovery partition on 500 GB HDD from which DVD recovery media and drivers DVD can be created via Acer eRecovery Management.

Acer's free 'Theft Shield' solution seems to only provide an audible alarm if laptop is carried away more than a few feet from a connected Wi-Fi hotspot -I am assuming it used WiFi signal strength as a trigger, and if it detects a noticeable change (caused from movement), it sounds an audible alarm from the system speakers.

In order to use the hardware-based Intel Anti-Theft (AT) feature, activation codes may be purchased separately (~$25 1yr, ~$40 3yr). The item descriptions/part numbers for US market are:

BXIATSC1YRENG Intel Anti-Theft Service Activation Code Card 1YR English Retail

BXIATSC3YRENG Intel Anti-Theft Service Activation Code Card 3YR English Retail

In addition, Acer included a URL link on the Windows 7 Start Menu for a trial of McAfee branded Intel AT service, which I just enrolled in. The way it works is that the downloadable software client that gets installed upon activation via your web browser synchronizes with the server to check for the existence of a lock activated via web browser or (good luck with this one!) phone support. After a few painful phone conversations with phone representatives -first at McAfee support, then at Intel Anti-Theft support, one stated that the activation period for the service was for the duration of ownership of the product. I still doubt that, given that the terms & conditions I revisited when I signed up mention that if no term is given it would be for 1 year, so I am assuming that is how long it will really last, but we'll see.

Anyway, so if the anti-theft software syncs with the server and finds an existing lock in place, it immediately powers off the computer and sets the lock flag. When powering up the computer again, you are greeted with a screen that it is locked. The web interface permits you to customize with a short message with (presumably) contact information to return the laptop to you, but you could put any text in that field. In addition, via the web interface, you can set a pre-defined lock time choosing from disabled or 3-30 days in 1 day increments -so if the PC does not sync with the servers via an internet connection for that amount of time, it will lock itself the same way as explained before. By default, the pre-defined lock time is 21 days.

Now for the actual review -I purchased this because I needed/wanted a portable NVIDIA Kepler based workstation for developing CUDA code. Currently (as of 07/12/2012), NVIDIA has a Verde 304.79 driver that supports CUDA 5 Preview -there will eventually be a non-beta driver, but in the meantime this driver works for my purposes. Access to the DDR3 memory slot requires removing all the back screws and using a platic pry tool in order to open up the top case, in addition to removing at least 3 Zero-Insertion Force (ZIF) connectors for keyboard, keyboard backlight (KB) and touchpad (TP), which are all in the bottom part of the case, so pry and lift from the LCD side. Be very careful, as it is VERY easy to break these type of ZIF locking connectors. Disconnect the battery cable also, just to be on the safe side. Replacing the HDD with SSD is possible, but also requires taking the daughterboard (DB) that contains the SD slot/headphone/mic port out -held by two small screws, as one HDD screw is underneath it.

Replacing the ODD is easy, just one screw holds it in. However, I suggest being VERY careful while removing/replacing the ODD, the standoff holding the drive became loose on the laptop I purchased from the previous retailer -it is held down poorly to a thin piece of metal attached to the bottom of the palmrest, boo Acer! I successfully used super-glue to re-attach it, but it is not an easy task, it took a few tries. If you are replacing the drive with another one, check the thickness -if it is just a little bit more thick, remove the top cover entirely, put the drive in place with the screw bracket over the standoff, and screw everything back together. That way the standoff does not have force applied to its side, and is MUCH less prone to breaking off. In fact, I'd say loosed all the other bottom screws before attempting to take the ODD out in the first place. It's a tight fit... that's what she said! ;) For that matter all the clearances/lengths of FFCs/ZIF sockets are very close and not much give is left, it is good to keep in mind if you decide to open up the system for upgrades/repasting or some other reason.

I figured this hardware review would help any tech-inclined people that want to try to Hackintosh this or use Ubuntu/some flavor of Linux.

Unlike the previous TimelineX generation that throttled the CPU to avoid overheating, the M5-481TG seems to throttle/downclock the GPU to 270 MHz. This proved acceptable in my initial testing with Heroes of Might and Magic VI and Metro 2033, as gameplay was decently responsive, even at the highest settings. (Caveat, New Game/Load/Quit screen of Metro 2033 had black bands when using DirectX 11, changing to DirectX 10 fixed this -probably a driver issue). In my opinion throttling and not the greatest ever panel are the true downfalls of this laptop, and account for my 1 star deduction. Other than that, I think this one is a keeper for a while!

Not-so-technical review -The touchpad can be very fluid, especially with a lighter touch. I'm still getting used to physical buttons being part of the touchpad, so I cannot comment much. There does not seem to be any flex on the keyboard -it is screwed into the palmrest/top cover from the inside with plenty of small screws. There is, however, some slight flex along the top part of the palmrest, but nothing that creaks/cracks. Viewing angles for the LCD screen could be better, but for a laptop that's about 1/3 of the price of a MacBook Pro model with Kepler graphics there had to be some compromise.

The SSD hard drive caching the HDD is nice if you're not used to SSD speeds -I am, and it feels slow. ;) I mistakenly ordered a regular form factor (9.5mm height) SSD to use, only to realize that the HDD is a low-profile 7mm height. I was able to return it and purchase SAMSUNG 830 Series 2.5-Inch 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-7PC256B/WW, given it is a 7mm height, and will fit. I have used Crucial M4s and Plextor M3s, but this Samsung sounds quite promising, and faster write speeds compared to the others, so it's a worthwhile upgrade.

I like Acer as they usually make very solid products for the price and have much better support that Lenovo... But sadly there is just something very wrong with the 14 inch M5-481TG-6814 model.

While the notebook is still good value for the money, playing some of the more recent games at higher settings will utterly destroy it AND there seems to be no sort of built in overheat protection. Planetside 2 and The Secret World, while not too graphically intensive will bring this ultrabook to it's knees.

Using it as an actual laptop (the way it's meant to be used) results in damaging the system, however these problems go away with a very cheap add on. This is one of the few notebooks where I absolutely MUST suggest that you also get a decent laptop cooler.

The Good:

About 6-7 hours playtime when doing anything but gaming.

USB 3.0.

Third gen Intel CPU + GPU.

HDMI.

SSD for (almost) INSTANT on!

Full sized back-lit keyboard!

14", lightweight form factor.

Great price if purchased elsewhere (I got mine slightly cheaper and with a $100 gift card).

Good sound for such a small notebook.

RAM can be expended to 10GB (with an extra 8GB stick).

Fairly powerful Nvidia GPU.

The Bad:

Only ONE slot for a RAM upgrade (the other 2GB is built in).

Comes with a lot of pre-installed useless software (bloatware).

The 20GB of SSD is NOT accessible. Yeah, that's right. No idea behind the reasoning on this one.

It gets hot REAL fast if you start gaming. To the point of actually burning your lap. This is the hottest notebook I have ever owned, and I had plenty.

Flaky wireless. Lots of dropped packets. Fixed easily and cheaply by buying another adapter.

Replacing the HDD, WiFi card, or even RAM requires unscrewing over a dozen screws (around 14 to 16 actually).

Screen resolution is limited to 1366 x 768. This is a WASTE of the powerful Nvidia GPU in this unit (which is good at overclocking, but should not be because of the intense heat the laptop already experiences).

While playing graphically intensive games, this laptop's tiny three cell battery becomes nearly useless. You will get a few hours (at most) of gaming done unless the system is plugged in.

The Ugly:

My first M5-481TG-6814 worked great during my initial Planetside 2 playsession. After about three hours of gaming, it got so hot that it shut down. Turning it back on failed. It just died. Since it was still during my first week of purchase, I contacted the Egg and had them replace it.

This time I bought a single fan, low profile cooling pad to keep it on. My second M5-481TG-6814 still got a bit hot and eventually the screen started to artifact while gaming (at least it didn't shut down by itself). Restarting would fix it for a while, only to have the problems reappear in a few more minutes of gaming.

The third (and I hope final 6814) is sitting on a dual fan cooling pad, which rises quite a bit higher and keeps it relatively cool. No issues so far (for a few weeks now actually), but the trade off is that this ultrabook is now not nearly as mobile as it was designed to be.

Conclusion:

If you are in the market for a laptop that you can use just for browsing the web, watching movies, and word processing do yourself a favor and get something (much) cheaper.

If you are in the market for a gaming ultrabook, the Acer TimelineU M5-481TG-6814 is a good purchase for the price, just do yourself a favor and buy a nice cooling pad...Or you could get a much nicer desktop at a fraction of the cost, since with a giant pad this thing becomes a monster (defeating the ultrabook purpose).

If they just solved the heat issue (by adding more/better fans and better heatsink), this would easily be the best ultrabook for the money.

UPDATE --I ended up returning this ultrabook because the massive cooler prevented it from really being mobile. For $120 more, I got a much better (and cooler) machine. It also came with a GT 640M LE, and I managed to overclock it to 850MHZ (with a simple bios flash), allowing me to play all the games I wanted at maximum settings.

I stumbled upon this laptop about a month ago after doing some extensive research on laptops. I didn't want to spend too much money, but I also wanted some premium features like dedicated graphics and a slim design. Enter the Acer TimelineU M5-481TG-6814, which was $780 from Amazon. At first, I was a bit hesitant since Acer has never been a brand I've trusted. To me, it's always been synonymous with cheapness. However, I decided to take a risk and purchase it since it had many key features other laptops charged an arm and a leg for. Things like Intel's newest Ivy Bridge proccessors, Nvidia Kepler graphics, and an optical drive. Some features even caught me by surprise, like the backlit keyboard. However, now that I've spent almost a month with it, I can say I've experienced something I never have with any other laptop I've ever purchased: No feeling of buyer's remorse.

When I got this laptop, immediately what struck me was the design. It looked slim and nice enough in pictures, but in person I was much more surprised because of how good the weight felt in my hands and how slim it was, this coming from someone who also owned a (at the time) very slim Sony Vaio SA model by the way. While the whole design isn't unified materials, the bottom being sturdy plastic, the cool, metal lid and deck eschewed any worries I had about shoddy workmanship as it felt far more premium than what I was expecting. Even opening the lid has proved to be very sturdy despite the thinness. In fact, the overall look and feel has really taken me by surprise, as things I had been bummed out on previous laptops, like my aforementioned $900 Sony Vaio SA, like flexing while opening the lid, were nowhere to be found. I was even impressed by the audio quality. Nice, loud, and even sound.

Performance has also been stellar. In casual use, the laptop runs quiet and cool. Using the graphics card can make for some fan noise, but it's nowhere near the levels of other laptops, in particular the Sony Vaio SA series which at times sounded like it was getting ready for liftoff, and can easily be drowned out by the audio coming from the speakers. In most cases from being completely off, it takes about 20 seconds for it to boot into Windows, probably less if I didn't require a password. Resuming from sleep or hibernation is even quicker, and I always seem to be able to jump right in to using applications without any lag. Gaming has also been very smooth. Older games play without a hitch, and the newer games I've tried, like Star Wars The Old Republic, run at medium to high settings at native resolutions in very playable form. It's only when I have the laptop connected to my 1080p monitor that things can get a little slow, but then again for the kind of laptop this is (ultraportable), that's understandable. Battery life has also been within the realm of what Acer states. Most of the time that's about 4-5 hours if I'm browsing with WI-FI and Bluetooth turned on. Gaming nets me 2-3 hours, but that is a given as the dedicated graphics card is getting a workout. Finally, the keyboard is a pleasure to use and the trackpad is surprisingly accurate. Multitouch gestures work well, better than they ever did on my Sony and Asus, and keys click nicely and are spaced well enough.

Now despite what you may think from what I've wrote so far, not everything has been peachy. As much as a I like the design, the LG Shuriken display has a tame resolution that isn't bad, but isn't great like some of the other ultrabooks out there. Everything is bright and vivid, but it doesn't match the 1600x900 resolution of more premium models. Still, it's not awful and since most of the time the laptop is a good 20+ inches away from your face, I doubt anyone will be disappointed by it. One thing that can be called that is the black boarder around the display. It's a bit jarring when you notice it. A flush bezel would've made more sense. Also, as nice as the keyboard and trackpad are, the backlighting can be easily seen in certain angles from the slivers of the keys and can be pretty bright, and the trackpad is slightly off center, which seems like a strange design choice if intended to be that way. Also, sometimes when resuming from sleep the multitouch gestures stop working except for zoom. I'm not sure if this is just something I'm doing wrong on my part, but it seems that sometimes I can't two-finger scroll or do other multitouch gestures unless I reboot the computer.

Port selection is also a bit sparse, with only two USB 3.0 connections, and being aligned on the back of the laptop means when using wireless mouses that have dongles that connect to the USB, the connection can be spotty depending on use. Still, all of this is nitpicking at what is a really a fantastic, premium-laced bargain, and it by no means detracts from the overall impressiveness of this laptop. From the sturdy, premium-like build quality, to the robust features, fast, and quiet performance, this laptop is well worth your money if you don't want to spend $1,300+ on an upscale ultrabook or you're just looking for a great deal without sacrificing anything. Buy it. You'll love it...or at worst, like it. =)

I'm not too ashamed to admit that I mostly chose this laptop for it's low price and ability to play Guild Wars 2. The laptop boosts very fast and plays GW2 on medium setting very smooth and nicely. I tried it on the highest setting as well, although the graphics was great, the game play slowed down a lot. The LED lit keyboard makes it great for working in the dark. However, there are a couple of things that really bugs me about this laptop.

1. Connection to Wifi. Compared to the three other laptops in my house (Toshiba, Dell, and ASUS), this computer has issues getting enough wifi signal. I have to sit very close to the router for the wifi bar go to fill up. If I'm downstairs, it's connection will be very weak and sometimes with no signal.

2. Overheating. The fan is located on the top right side of the laptop. It overheats to a point where it burns my skin. I use a cooling pad with it to reduce the overheating, but that greatly reduces the laptop's portability.

3. Only two USB connections and they are both in the back. This is not very convenient at all! My boyfriend got me a USB hub to go with it...but it's such a pain in the butt =(

However, overall, this is a great product! The smooth surface makes it great for laptop decals! :D

Dell Latitude D600 PentiumM 1.6Ghz 512Mb 40Gb WiFi CDD+RW/DVD Laptop

Dell Latitude D600 PentiumM 1.6Ghz 512Mb 40Gb WiFi CDD+RW/DVD LaptopPurchasing a used laptop was a risk and we weren't sure if it was worth taking....until we used this Dell for over a month. We couldn't be happier with our purchase! The only downside to this product is that Microsoft Office did not come installed on this notebook. However, the seller was prompt and the computer arrived intact and in just a few days. The battery lasts about two hours and the wireless is invaluable. I don't know how we lived without a laptop for all this time-we hardly ever turn on our PC anymore!

I've always been a fan of the Dell D600 (and D610) since I first used them at work. These units are true workhorses that never let you down, regardless of the application used on them. So when it came time to order a laptop for my son for his impending college trek, the choice was easy.

I know, buying a refurbished anything is a crapshoot, but not so with this laptop. the unit actually came to me looking better than described and performs flawlessly. My son's happy...I'm happy...you'll be happy, too and save some cash to boot!

NOTE: The unit does come with Windows XP but NOT with Office, thus the 4-star rating.

Refurbished Dell Inspiron 17R N7010 17' Laptop i5-460M 4GB 500GB HD Webcam HDMI - 1 year DELL warrantyI have a slightly different laptop than this one as mine is 2.40GHz i5 with 6GB of RAM but they are essentially the same. I've had my Dell N7010 for about a year now and use it to run AutoCAD LT v2010 as well as Canvas v11, several programs specific to electrical engineering, FTP, and all the usual MS Office items. I very much enjoyed how the N7010 does not come with a lot of bloatware programs littering the hard drive. There are no soft touch controls on the computer which I applaud since previous laptops I've owned seemed to have nothing but problems with those. My Windows Experience Index numbers are as follows:

Processor: 6.8

Memory: 6.8

Graphics: 4.55

Gaming Graphics: 5.2

Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

All in all, I'm very satisfied with the performance and features of this laptop. It is well built, nice keyboard, good connectivity, and has been quite reliable for me. My wish list is that it had a blueray optical disk, USB 3.0, and that the cooling fan was a little quieter.

Shipped directly from Dell. Excellent packaging. It was simple to unpack, assemble, start up for the first time with a few of my preferences factored in the first time. The computer comes with a Getting Started type of manual that's quite thorough for that purpose. There is no expanded user manual, but there is a repair manual available online. The machine is 64-bit operating system capable, but how well that works, depends upon implementation.

I this product with Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, 6G figuring that would keep me up with technology. Wrong. It put me ahead of technology (more than it could deliver). The 64-bit version hickups badly at times, and is much slower than when its running with the 32-bit version, per tech support at Dell. I should hope Something works better than what I have now. The installed version has terrible synchronization with a multiple thread program, such that I about gave up using it.

But I can't simply install the 32-bit I have to get another disk (this is an OEM install). Dell says although they did not ship me a 32-bit version of the program, they offered several options, one of which I took. Dell also says the ultimate version of Windows is faster still, but I declined, for reasons of price.

Most controls are well placed. I'd have preferred a larger Enter key. This one is the width of 2 1/2 regular keys, but no taller than any other I would have preferred one a bit larger in all directions, so that I could tell by feel (I touch type rather than hunt/peck). Full size keys (no hand cramps), standard placement for most keys, nice touch. Nice size mouse pad there's an option to shut off sensitivity when using the keyboard usually effective. Sometimes the mouse will activate by accident. The ESC key will often release it.

Very clear display, good colors, no distortion. Quiet fan at rest and for ordinary use such as a word processor. Heavier use will rev the fan up, but the "noise" level is mild enough to allow normal conversation.

If you are a heavy, 3D animated graphics user, consider the graphical observations below.

The laptop has a port for an analog monitor. It also has an HDMI port for direct, external display. This computer has a simple method to switch displays between a TV/amplifier/receiver/projector, computer, or both. For full HDMI resolution you need to switch to projection (eg TV) only. The 17" maximum screen resolution is 1600 x 900 and restricts the size when simultaneously sending a signal to its screen and the TV.

The computer has 4-2.0 USB ports spaced far enough from each other as to not interfere with physical shapes of the USB jack. One of those ports is about 1/4" from the Ethernet cable, which in my case has been needed only twice (worked flawlessly). Dell doesn't believe the technology is "there" as of this writing to employ add-on 3.0 USB.

For my usage the computer is comfortable to use on my lap without an extra pad, leaving some room between my knees for mild heat exhaust.

Like a few other manufacturers, Dell allows the function keys to be used for multiple roles. During boot up the keys operate normally, but when the operating system is control, the default for the keys to operate pre-defined Dell Functions such as volume or screen being stronger or weaker, sound muted, menu for different display options, toggle network adapters, etc. To use the same keys as Operating System function keys, one must hold down a "Fn" button (placed between the Left-Control and Windows (flag) keys). Dell made the right choice for me -I use their functions far more often than of the OS. Weakness the function key numbering is a hue of blue that blends easily against the brown keys. In dim light it is very hard to determine what the key is except by counting, but the ESC key is the same size & shape as "F1" immediately to its left, so F5 is really the 6th key over.

The computer has a built in port for some camera memory cards works fine for my Panasonic but not for the Canon. But both cameras come with USB adapters, so not a big issue.

A reasonable power pack will run unplugged for 2 3 hours before warning you that it will need to shutdown or have power.

Good OS rarely have I had to reboot or logoff. My habit is to shut the lid using a setting that puts the computer to sleep after 15 minutes or so. It does not come with office products such as spread sheet, but I found a good free open source code office product on the internet.

The internal wireless adapter works well with my 802.11n router, but I had a little trouble with getting the initial handshake. After that, no problem. I've chucked my older 11n USB adapter in its favor.

I considered switching to 32-bit based on Dell's comment that it was a better product, but later decided my problem wasn't the instruction bit size, but total available resources. See "Comment" section for a Q&A.

I've had my Dell N7010 for 3 and a half years now, and it's still my daily computer. I mostly use MS Office and Gmail, and some graphical editing programs and Calibre eBook management, so it's not stressed like what the gamers would do. The screen is easy on the eyes, keyboard is simple and easy and has a comfortable feel. Various I/O have been used for USB devices (mini & micro USB) and Apple iTunes have all been trouble-free. I've traveled with it about 100 times, used it day or night for work and play and it's always been just great. There are fancier lap tops that are sleek and thin, but I'd much rather have a dependable workhorse that I can trust. I'm on this thing almost every day and would not hesitate to recommend it to ANYONE who needs a dependable laptop.

I like the size of the laptop. It is in very good condition. I loaded up a couple of programs I use a lot with no problem. There is a significant problem with the keyboard it is either incredibly over-sensitive , or something is wrong with it. I was trying to write a report and the cursor jumped around so much it was impossible to continue. I generally use the computer for web-browsing and watching TV so I have not explored this further yet, although I know there is a way to adjust the sensitivity of the key-pad.

Bought this computer new and loved it at first. Large screen and keyboard. Then things started to go wrong with it. One USB port and then 2 USB ports quit. The fan quit. The keyboard started giving me problems... Software issues too. All this within 2 years. I got tired of having problems with it and finally bought another computer.

TOSHIBA T4400 2.2/4GB/320GB/DVD

TOSHIBA T4400 2.2/4GB/320GB/DVDThe Toshiba Satellite L455-S5009 is a great everyday use laptop. It packs more than enough power to get your work done. The video card doesn't allow for much game-play, but it is not a gaming laptop. For everything you get inside, the price is more than fair. Shop around to look for a deal, I have seen them go for as little as $399. I would gladly recommend this computer to anyone in the market for a new laptop.

I just picked this up at Best Buy for $399 and can't believe the deal I got. This computer packs a great processor, 4GB of ram, a 320GB hard drive, Windows 7 home premium, wireless and a beautiful screen you can't go wrong.

It isn't the sleekest computer on the market, but you won't find anything as powerful near the price.

You can't go wrong with this laptop.

I admit I have not been the most careful with this laptop, and I need to carry it around a lot, which I do not recommend if you need a highly mobile laptop. It is very easily damaged. Right now there are scuffs all over the laptop because it shows very easily. There is litereally a square of white marks where the screen hits the keyboard when it closes and there is a giant white spot on the touchpad just from clicking with it. The left clicker has been broken since the day I got this computer, the charger has stopped working and I had to get a new one twice in a 2 year period, the dvd cover fell off, the internet has been slowly deteriorating, as I used to get 5 bars in my room and now I get no reception (This is not the internet provider, because my roommates and iPod still have the same reception, and I am experiencing lower reception everywhere). Also, once I was using the laptop and I closed it and there was a large crack, and one of the hinges had fallen off. The battery life is AWFUL. It used to be just annoying, but by now it lasts me maybe 45 minutes on lowest brightness possible. The speakers are really quiet as well.

The actual computer runs well-it is fast enough for what I need and I have had no problems running programs (I am not a hardcore gamer by any means, just everyday usage). But like I said, the laptop is built cheaply.

I got this laptop in the January of 2010. A few months after I got it, the touchpad began to wear down, which has resulted in a huge and very unsightly white spot in the middle of it. The left clicker also has a black spot worn into it, as if a Sharpie was used to draw on it. The spots on both have grown over time. Another issue I had with the left clicker was sticking and sometimes not working.

I had many problems in regards to performance, and I often found my laptop not being able to run some programs, and while it's not a gaming computer by any means, it couldn't run even low-performance games very well.

Lastly, the hinge broke after about a year and every time I opened the laptop, there was a loud clicking noise and the top of the laptop would be crooked and coming loose. Just an hour ago, it completely broke and the screen is now barely hanging on.

I've decided that I would rather just buy a new laptop than get this one fixed. This laptop is not worth your time.

I got this computer a bit over a year ago, and for the most part it works great. I use this computer a lot for school and in my free time quite a lot, and it can handle most minor and commonplace things without any problems. The one way I feel that this computer falls short of is the lack of a decent graphics card. It has trouble playing any games, even some that have been out for over 4 years. I don't really mind it all too much, but it tends to be a bit of a hassle in the long run.

So yeah, for anything other than games, this computer certainly isnt a bad choice.

Dell XPS 14Z X14z-2310ELS 14-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)

Dell XPS 14Z X14z-2310ELS 14-Inch LaptopThe standout feature of the XPS 14z is that it has a 14-inch display housed in a chassis of a 13.3-inch notebook. Apart from the all-aluminium design, the narrow bezel is the first thing that you'll notice as the laptop boots up. The display has superb brightness and clarity good for gaming, HD video and everything else in between. In terms of build quality, Dell has kept up with XPS tradition and used metal extensively. The entire shell and palmrest is brushed aluminium. The backlit keyboard is comfortable to use for long typing sessions and the large track pad responds well with good support from the anodised aluminium and magnesium alloy palm-rest full marks to Dell for build quality.

There is both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, Ethernet, HDMI and DisplayPort all present neatly on the rear to minimize wire clutter. On the left side is the card reader and audio jacks, while the right side hosts the slot loading optical drive and a battery status indicator. There are heat dissipation vents present on the side, back and bottom useful as with such hardware it is bound to get heated up. The XPS 14z boasts of being the first Skypecertified laptop for video chat. The webcam quality is very pleasing great output, both in terms of video and audio. Another impressive feature of the laptop is the sound. The onboard JBL speakers are loud and clear good enough for a small room.

Overall very pleased with this notebook if you can get it under four figures, it's a good buy considering the build quality and components. It feels like it will hold up to anything, and is very sleek and impressive looking (similar to the Macbook Air).

I have a dell and I love the computer except for the issue with wifi that so many are describing. I had initially thought it was a problem with my router so I called tech support through time warner cable. they came out to trouble shoot my router and found that the wireless card in the laptop is faulty which you can see in different forums online. they turned off what they called the "N" portion of my router and all was good. I was finally pulling the speeds I was supposed to (initially pulling 2mbps with n off getting 19-20mbps). after that it would take several minutes for my laptop to connect to the router and they fixed that issue too although i have no idea what they did there. So the computer is at fault there but there are ways around it :) If you google dell xps 14z wireless card you can find multiple forums about this issue. Hope this helps!

I purchased dell xps14z about a year ago. The product looks quite good. The performance of the dell xps14z is good except for wireless connection. sometimes it is very hard to connect to wireless network unless otherwise you are 1 meter away from the router (then it works okay). I have contacted dell to solve this problem they gave it a few tries but never solve the problem. As I said, the computer is quite fast and the performance of the machine is good. But when you have problem to connect to wifi network, the laptop is not really useful. Now I am always using it with a cable internet as the wifi connection is not stable. Sometimes I am connected after a few minutes I am disconnected and so on. I do regret buying it as it is too expensive and makes life harder.

I have had two persistent problems with my XPS 14z. The first one is related to projecting images for whatever reason projecting images on both the laptop and a projection screen is not possible. The second is related to my wireless network adapter. It is very fickle, and I need to disconnect/connect to my home wireless internet sometimes ten times a day to keep it working. That while all other wireless devices (my husband's laptop, iPad...) are working fine. Now, I understand that not all computers work 100% perfectly and that sometimes things needs fixing. But I have tried to work with Dell on both issues, and they make me do so many things for so long, that I just gave up. You are literally with them on the phone or on chat for hours without having your issue resolved. I don't want to pick the issues up again and waste another five hours talking to them about all the issues I know my computer is NOT having to cut to the chase. I'm so disappointed with their customer service, I'm pretty sure this is the last time I'll buy a Dell (I have had Dell consistently over the last 7 years). Honestly, unless you don't have a job or a life, don't get a Dell!

Apple iBook Laptop 14.1" M9165LL/A (1Ghz PowerPC G4, 256 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Drive)

Apple iBook Laptop 14.1' M9165LL/AOk, I know you have read time and again about making "the Switch" to which most just shake their heads. Me I'm sold! I got the ibook over the powerbook due to the fact that 1) I am not a graphic designer, 2) the battery life, 3) the price, and 4) I didn't like squinting at the 12" screen. The battery life on the 14" is awesome! It is pretty true to the advertising of 6 hrs, even if you are running airport extreem and playing itoons as you surf the web as I am right now. The battery life dipps a little when you are watching DVDs, or playing a game, but then again that's because you are crunching some serious graphical goodness due to the ati card. Over all, I say it's a great buy for the money! I will recommend to everyone to max out the ram though, a must with OSX. If you are looking for a great laptop that just works and runs forever GET THIS ibook.

Although Apple markets this laptop as though it's an entry level laptop for casual users, I can tell you that from my experience it's plenty powerful enough for the road warrior as well. Unless you have money to burn or some very good reason to go for the Powerbook, I suggest you save $1,000 and buy the iBook. The only downside to ordering from Amazon is that you can't get one with the internal Bluetooth module. This was an issue for me because I have a Bluetooth enabled phone and mouse, so I ordered direct from Apple.

The 1 GHz processor and maximum RAM provide lightening fast boot-up and application loading. Add the Airport Extreme card and you can surf the web from hotspots all over the country.

I've been using and defending PCs for a long, long time! Ever since I got in front of a computer (about 20 years ago), all I've worked with were PCs. And I stubbornly kept defending PCs and disregarding Macs as thought they were inferior. As of late, however, I've been using UNIX quite a bit and knowing the strengths of all *IX OS's I knew I wanted a *IX compatible laptop. Well, alas! Apple came with Panther and I was sold! I bought this laptop through my university's Apple store and got it "souped-up" and I tell you with confidence that this is the *best* laptop I've ever owned! The weight is lower than most competitors' comparable laptops. The power of Panther is outstanding. I feel confident recommending this laptop to anyone without any reservations. Apple is giving consumers, for the first time, a TRUE alternative to MS Windows' hegemony. Some of you who have been around computers might read the title of this post and giggle for that is what people were saying back in the mid-80s and never became a reality (at least not for the consumer as evidenced by the market share apple holds). But I think with this laptop and Panther Apple has made a believer out of me. Very solid, good-lloking, powerful laptop.

Asus G73JH-BST7 LAPTOP COMPUTER / Intel Core i7 Processor / 17.3" Display / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard

Asus G73JH-BST7 LAPTOP COMPUTER / Intel Core i7 Processor / 17.3' Display / 6GB Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - BlackAs my first computer I've had in about 5 years, I was pretty worried that I would buy a bad laptop, and I wanted a gaming laptop too, so the selection for something under $900 that could play newer games on Medium-High settings were slim. Luckily I ran across this laptop, and for about $800 with a free upgrade to 8gb of RAM, I bought it, and I'm not regretting it at all.

Two weeks now having used this thing, and while at first I had some problems updating drivers, but after finishing everything, it runs absolutely fine. Better than fine! So far I've played Killing Floor, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, Fallen Earth, and a few other F2P games that were graphically intense. All of these games, I was expecting to be able to run no better than on Medium with smooth framerate, but guess what? Not just High settings, but MAX settings on everything, online, Anti-Aliasing, on the max resolution of 1600x900, with about 40fps. Which, if you don't know, is damn near incredible.

The huge screen, fast processor (which it states in the specs is up to 1.73GHz, but it's actually with the "turbo button" or whatever, ups that to around 2.4GHz), the fan that keeps everything VERY cool, and doesn't heat up even during my long 6-8 hour gaming sessions, and great backlit keyboard all combine into the perfect gaming laptop if you ask me.

My ONLY complaint is the trackpad buttons, which are quite hard to press. Luckily, I only use my mouse really, so it doesn't affect most people.

If you're looking for a good gaming laptop, or even just a laptop that's fast and has a 17" screen, I'd highly recommend this one!

The product was what I wanted. It was in good functioning condition and was timely deliverd. The router bit had two blades as compared to some inferior types with only one blade.

The 11.6" size is pretty ideal from my perspective small enough to carry around and yet a full-size keyboard. HP Consumer Refurbished Pavilion m6-1045dx 15.6" Entertainment Notebook PC

HP Consumer Refurbished Pavilion m6-1045dx 15.6' Entertainment Notebook PCThis is a great product for a pretty good price, 3rd generation core I5 with speedboost is extremely fast, 8 gigs of ddr3 plenty of memory hardware specs are top the screen is beautiful, the hard drive leaves alot to be desired, you have this powerhouse of a laptop and then a 5400 rpm drive!??!, needless to say i threw a samsung SSD 840 in there and my boot time is so fast it almost goes back in time.

Pros:

Top of the line hardware

Speedtests/stress tests all successful and good ratings

Intel Graphics 4000 HUGE improvement over the 2/3/3.5 graphics on the previous line of chips, i can even play battlefield3 with little to no lag although not on the highest settings

Ram is quality ram although its not max speed the board can handle.

Screen is extremely vivid esp with the led backlite

Audio is LOUD but quality due to the beats framework

Cons:

5400 rpm drive is a disgrace to this powerhouse, I personally recommend a Samsung MZ-7TD250BW 840 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) 250 GB Sata 2.5-Inch

a bit on the heavy side and it gets very warm on your lap but thats to be expected

power settings in OS before i replaced and reformatted where defaulted to HP economy settings, set to high performance

not really a con but an observation that battery life on high performance was about 5 hours

Overall its a great laptop, but i would spend an extra few bucks on a SSD for it

super fast laptop love the simple pass reader now don't have to remember all passwords. Plus the beats audio just make it even better I do recommend this pc with the i5

Probook 4430S 14" I3-2310M

Probook 4430S 14' I3-2310MIt is a bang for the price. Holds charge for 4-5 hours in ms office or 3-4 hours watching hd movie. Design is nice and laptop is thinner when i thought. New core-i3 is enough for all my task (which exclude gaming). Speakers are on average loudness and quality level. Has an USB 3.0 port, although not tested this yet. Package is minimalistic but it is okay for me. Keyboard is nice, wi-fi have a good reception. Have one glitch with Autocad and internal video drivers.

Good budget laptop low probook status, half aluminum half plastic great screen, keyboard tho sometimes glitchy requiring a reboot. wi-fi sucks older samsung laptop next to me gets solid strength when i get crap. battery lasts a long time multi tasking. over all pros outweight its cons and is a good buy on a budget spend the extra $45 at crucial to get 8G of ram total

I really disliked this laptop when I first got it. It was so different than the larger laptop I was used to. It's difficult at first to type on because the touch pad is extremely sensitive. You can turn the touchpad off and use a regular mouse by double tapping the top left corner of the touchpad. However, that feature wasn't working for me until recently. There are music controls that allow you to turn the volume up, down, and mute. There is also video controls (forward, play pause, rewind)You do have to hold down the FN button located next to the CTRL button on the left at the same time to use these controls. I also like the internet button located next to the wifi button at the top, it opens your default browser when pressed. Another plus is that this laptop doesn't have flat keys that will easily pop off. After 2 months of using this laptop It became easier to use. I chose this over my larger laptop because it's more convenient to move around and use. The battery doesn't last very long, just about 2 hours for me. I use it for music, email, facebook, and online classes. If you need a laptop that will have a good battery life (for traveling) I wouldn't recommend this one. Also, I had some compatibility issues with a game (Sims2) but the game still ran fast and with some adjustments it was fine. It's worth looking into the video card before buying if you play a lot of games. For basic home use it is great, I only use this laptop now. I would buy another one if I needed to. It takes some time to get used to but overall it is a good little laptop to have around.

VERY SLOW!! Even as I write this, my new 4430s is constantly freezing up.

Keypad: It feels abrasive to the touch, and the bumps on F and J are are way too prominent. The keys are tiny so it's awkward when you're trying to type quickly. The up and down arrows are TINY and tight packed, which means you're going to be constantly pressing on the wrong key. And the end button is above the pg up button. Um... which genius thought that this was a good idea?

Volume control: you have to hold down fn and hit another key on the top to lower/raise volume. And these keys are not very sensitive, so you really have to press down the entire time. And it takes forever to lower / raise the volume!

Touchpad: It doesn't have the scrolling function. The cursor spazzes ALL THE TIME. The clickers are borderline unresponsive.

I originally wanted to get a Mac, but I did not want to spend as much as I would have had to in order to buy one. I feel like this is a nice low-cost alternative. I have been using this laptop for about the past 6 months, and it has held up very well! I feel like the design is very sleek. I also like that the LCD screen as opposed to all of the other laptops on the market that have glossy screens (which are AWFUL with smudges and glare). The MS Office suite and STATA run very well on the laptop, and I never have any problems attending online classes/conference calls through Adobe Pro Connect, Skype and other communication applications. I also ordered this item from Circuit City through Amazon; I chose the normal free shipping option, and my package arrived within only 2-3 days! Overall, I would highly recommend this product!

ASUS A55VD-AB71 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS A55VD-AB71 15.6-Inch LaptopThe ASUS A55VD-AB71 is simply overall an EXCELLENT laptop once you get past one or two minor inconveniences. I bought this to replace my one year old Gateway NV55S04u 15.6-Inch Laptop that I also got from Amazon in 2011. My personal policy is to replace laptops within two years of usage but after seeing this ASUS A55VD and the specs it had I decided to break my custom and make it a one year deal. This is my very first time purchasing an ASUS product as I was skeptical about the brand at first since the name is never really mentioned in regular advertising campaigns in comparison to its rivals such as Acer, Gateway, HP-Compaq, Dell, etc. I have only had it for roughly a week but so far so good.

The good parts about the ASUS A55VD are the blazing fast Core i7 processor, the large 750GB hard drive and the IceCool Palm Rest. I was a little perturbed when I saw that the hard drive was split into two parts, a C: drive and a D: drive; the latter being for data only. While I understand this is for protective means in case of data loss or corruption I didn't find it necessary in my case since I don't believe in filling up laptop hard drive spaces as it causes eventual slowdowns. That being said I used the Windows 7 in-built Computer Management tool to merge the partitions together. I prefer it that way overall.

The memory of 6GB that it came with normally would be sufficient for the average user in conjunction with the Core i7 processor but my personal rule of thumb is to ALWAYS max out computer memory....or get as close to the maximum as one can comfortably afford so I purchased the Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9) kit at the same time and installed it. The system works like a dream no matter what task you "ask" it to do with this boost.

I usually have the laptop on for 8 or more hours plugged in a day so far and the heat levels are pretty moderate. I can keep it on my lap for quite some time and it doesn't get noticeably hot at all. Even at the bottom of it so kudos to ASUS for an excellent dissipating design. The lower right side of the laptop adjacent to the touchpad does get slightly warm when it's on for several hours but it's not enough to be an issue of discomfort for the right hand when resting on it.

There were two things I were disappointed with however the volume of the Realtek HD in-built speakers and the hybrid graphics of Intel HD4000/Nvidia 610M. Firstly, the speakers were allegedly to be Altec Lansing according to the info on the Amazon website but that is not the case. The speakers also sound so low even at their maximum that you'd swear something was wrong with your hearing and that you were prematurely going deaf. Even with adjustments made with the Realtek HD Audio Manager the sound increase was next to negligible. Thankfully, however, my years of gained pc skills reminded me that I could use external software to enhance the sound quality. For all those interested you can purchase DFX Audio Enhancer and SRS Audio Essentials. The combination of both have my volume levels for both music and movies operating at desired output levels....as far as laptops go at any rate.

Secondly, in regards to the graphics card, in no way was it mentioned on the Amazon site that the graphics would be a combination of Intel HD4000 and Nvidia 610M. It only lists the Nvidia. This disappointed me as I prefer dedicated graphics over embedded ones since the latter eats up part of the ram. Fortunately it seems to only consume 115MB of my 8GB ram. This isn't a deal breaker by any means BUT buyers should always know EXACTLY what they are getting before making a purchase. I will accept no excuse in regards to this from Amazon or ASUS.

Overall the ASUS A55VD-AB71 is a raging beast of a laptop. Just keep in mind that some tinkering has to be done to get it to perform at the optimum levels most enthusiasts and/or gamers are looking for when making a purchase of $700 to $900. Personally I got it at $729 which for a laptop this powerful is a real bargain.

UPDATE December 7, 2012: I decided to test the waters after doing some searches online about it and put in two sticks of 8gb each Corsair 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory CMSO16GX3M2A1600C11 and they took. The ASUS A55VD-AB71's Intel Core i7-processor and chipset can take 16GB of ram as indicated on the Intel website DESPITE the fact the ASUS website says a MAXIMUM of 8GB only. COMPLETELY INCORRECT!!! This will be a welcome update to those who are music, video and graphic artist professionals. I am loving this laptop more and more now.

I am what you call a tech guru. This laptop is awesome for 769 dollars. although the screen res is a little low for my tastes asus always comes out with quality hardware and I've never been disappointed. Great buy for the cost

I have several Asus products and have always been happy and satisfied with them...until now. The touchpad jumps around, the Asus power manager interferes constantly regardless of the settings, video only wants to run on the internal graphics (one reason I bought it was for the external graphics) once it hibernates it locks up, sometimes to the point the battery needs pulled.

I sent it in for warranty and they received it 10/31. I got it back 11/27. They kept saying parts were on order. The laptop actually broke about 10/15 but it took about 2 weeks to get the paperwork all in order to their liking. Let me tell you, save every scrap you can showing where it was bought and when. They try every trick possible to deny warranty. First they wouldnt recognize Amazon as a retailer, then the receipt didn't have the correct info, then the serial number wasn't in the system, then no one could find any records. Each time takes a day, then you have to call back for a 30min hold.

Since I got the laptop back, it still does the software quirks but I have adapted myself to them. If this is the quality Asus now makes, I am very disappointed. I guess they will slap their label on anything to make a buck.

This is a very, very good laptop for the price. But I wasn't absolutely blown away by it, so 4 stars it is.

Pros: Extremely fast for a laptop. the i7 is brutal. I rendered 30 minutes of 1080p video in 15 minutes. (that's insane)

Dead Silent, and minimal noise even when you are maxing out the system.

The "Ice Cold" Technology really works. For the majority of the time, the entire laptop is cool to the touch. Sometimes the area directly behind the cooling fan will be a little warm when doing some major processing or gaming.

The laptop overall feels very sturdy. The keyboard is GREAT. I was a little worried about it being too small, but don't worry about it. They somehow make it work, and I can type just as well as any other computer if not better.

CONS: I can't really be mad about it, because it is as advertised. but....

The Graphics Card (NVIDIA 610M-2GB) Is very, "eh..." Definitely an Entry Level graphics card. For reference, I can play Amnesia: The Dark Descent on the highest settings. Spec-ops: The Line and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Star Wars: The Old Republic on Medium/medium-low settings. Games like Planetside 2 and Skyrim are barely playable at the lowest setting. Any higher than that, and you're out of luck.

The screen resolution is not very good. The 1366 x 768 (or something like that) can't show all that much detail. You can tell when something is in HD or not, but honestly it doesn't make that much difference. I would recommend hooking up to an HDTV with an HDMI cord when doing anything that requires you to see specific details. (Graphic design, movie making, photo editing, etc.)

Other: Here's my opinion on Windows 8; Just give it a week and you'll learn to really like it. That is, if you aren't into any heavy mods to any games or files. While I feel windows 8 is more utilitarian in it's use, if you are a hardcore computer user who needs to modify the system, I would recommend sticking with Windows 7. Unless you want the additional specs that come with the Windows 8 version, then just degrade after.

I have used this computer for about a month prior to writing this review.

When my 10 yr old Sony notebook died I decided to buy a replacement and spent 5 weeks researching for the best one for a reasonable price. It came down to this one and a similar model at Tiger Direct. I had bought a ASUS Nexus 7 inch tablet for my autistic grandson and was really impressed with it. All I can saw is that this ASUS notebook is a really great computer and I have no complaints with it. I don't have any problems with the touch pad now that I have gotten used to it nor have any problems with the display going dim as reported in some reviews. The touch pad has several features that are different than what I have used on other notebooks. The user manual and the eManual (on the desktop) describe all of the touch pads features. The full function keyboard is a nice feature on a notebook of this size and battery life seems to very good as well. The computer is quiet, runs cool and the sound from the speakers when placed on a hard surface is better than any other laptop/notebook that I have used (several job furnished computers). The computer is really fast and the windows performance score does not do it justice. The low score is due to a 5400 RPM hard drive. I decided to do a computation intensive test using the 4 cores in parallel on a CFD analysis program and compare the results with the same program run on an 3.2 giga Hz AMD Pheneon II quad core Desktop computer. This notebook completed the analysis in 1925 seconds vs. 2805 on the desktop. I do wish that it came with a backlit keyboard.

Windows 8 is a bit of a beast to get used to and the biggest complaint is that it is an OS to fit multiple purposes which made it more difficult to figure out compared to all of the previous evolutions since the beginning of time (Windows). I eventually got comfortable using win8 even though I have to drag the hand from the top of the screen to the bottom to close a program (my biggest complaint). I see this as leading to carpal tunnel problems. My first smart phone had a windows OS and I hated it. Since I started using Android OS smart phones and Linux OS, I have become disenchanted with Microsoft. I managed to get Ubuntu Linux 12.10 installed and use it more than win 8. and still have to use win8 for some applications. I do like some of the security features of win8 compared to 7 and removed the free trial version of McAfee to install windows defender.

I would suggest that anyyone who purchases this computer review the documentation that comes with it as it has helped me tremendously.
