Where do I start, I have been researching laptops for the last 6 months, looking at specs etc. I needed to replace my laptop that has become outdated. I bought a Dell 5 years ago that was just too slow to watch videos, download anything or keep up with all of the new software upgrades. I wanted a laptop with speed, good memory, decent video graphics, large enough hard drive so that I wouldn't be changing it soon. Plus I wanted an expandable computer in terms of memory so that I wouldn't be limited at a really good price.

It is a 15.6 inch, 2.3G processing speed and 4G memory, with 320 Hard drive it is fast, you can view most of the HD videos clearly they finally load for me on You Tube..lol I need one also for work at home, since I use it for a lot of number entries. This is one of the best if not the best keyboards w/10 key numeric pad. I have large fingers and it is comfortable and easy to use it is set up just like an adding machine for accountants, or bookkeepers. There is just enough texture and grip of the keys for fast and easy typing. Another thing I loved about it was the gray interior it shows less visible fingerprints and dust for those who don't like the glossy black of most Toshiba's out there.

It was easy to set up I was so worried about how long it would take. I had already had a wireless network so all I did was boot up created a password and sign on, the connected to my wireless network and I was on the net. Yes to some it might have too much bloatware(unnecessary programs) but for those who are not as computer savvy it includes all the files to get you up and running but you need to update them from time to time. The camera is so easy to use and Skype is already set up.

When I bought it was a much better deal it is bright and easy to use for night viewing, especially if you watch movies or download movies online. I have just had it for a month but as long as you have a good registry cleaner program to clean up Windows 7 it should continue to run fast. One downer is I wish Toshiba would come with the Operating System disks included it is irritating to have to copy them on your own.

Overall you cannot get most of the specs like a large comfortable full size keyboard, with a 15.6 inch TruBrite screen, webcam 1.3 pixel, 320G Hard drive, ATI graphics, labelfish for your CD/DVD, 2.3G AMD processor with 4G memory for this price you cannot compare. Plus it is lightweight easy to move from room to room. So far very happy with my purchase.

If you read the 4 and 5 star reviews you'll get a sense of what works on this computer.

But they may not mention that two things are in fact annoying.

1. The sound quality on the speakers is awful. If you want to hear music or watch a movie, you'll have to have speakers.

2. The battery life is way short. Usually about an hour and thirty minutes. Keep your plug handy.

First and foremost I love this laptop! It is great for the things I do every day. I use it to complete assignments and to surf the internet. I have found that though this laptop has HD sound (yes it's awesome) the system speakers do it no justice, they are low and not great quality. I plugged in my earbuds and was blown away!!! I haven't tried it with external speakers yet but I will soon. My second issue is the two USB ports. To remedy that I brought a usb hub. Overall I am loving my Toshiba Satellite L505-E5025. If you are looking for a great inexpensive system, I highly recommend this one. I have the AMD processor and it's working great for me. Consider buying antivirus software and MS office when buying this product because it only comes with trial version of Norton and MS Office 07.

The L505 was a good choice for me. In the middle of a large dissertation, I had to dump my old beloved 2004 Gateway to keep up with Microsoft's constant system upgrade demands. The Toshiba is a bit heavy for a laptop but it has a solid feel for my mostly desktop use. Mousepad functionality is spotty but I rely mainly on a mouse. It is fast and (thus far) my McAfee installs happen quickly and quietly in the background without my even noticing. My only complaint is the squat dimensions of screen. The 15.6" "Tru-bright" screen is nice and bright, but the screen ratio makes it wide and short. If you are a document writer (vice an Excel jockey or primarily an internet surfer) you are giving up a lot of good screen space for documents. The wide dimensions make for other annoyances ... the power plug and USB port (only 2) with a thumb drive inserted on the right side require that you keep your mouse-arm splayed wide-right. Why not put these ports in the back? Otherwise, for my $540, this is a great machine. I looked at Dells in the same price range and they seem cheap and plasticky in comparison. Unfortunately, we are getting to the age of disposable laptops, in which it is easier to buy a new one than to upgrade. Perhaps cheap and plasticky, low and squaty, are the wave of future.

HP 2000-329WM BLACK LAPTOP

I have been using this laptop on a daily basis for months now.

It works well enough. It is not a product of the same caliber as ThinkPad, but for the little $$ I paid, it works well.

I do have constant issues with WiFi reception. The proximity of the laptop to the hotspot is an issue with all WiFi devices, but this computer seems to have a finicky WiFi antenna in the chassis perimeter.

I have used the laptop and my kindle in three different settings. In one of those settings, I also used a tablet computer. My HP laptop is consistently problematic if not placed very close to the the WiFi hotspot. My kindle and the tablet typically show twice as many antenna bars when placed on the same desktop.

If it weren't for this issue, I would rate it 5 stars. It is a thin, rather flimsy notebook, but for the cost, It is a good value and I don't regret my purchase.

Acer Aspire AS4743-6628 14-Inch HD Display Laptop

I picked up one of these because it was one of the three best deals I saw this Black Friday and weekend. The other was an Asus and a Toshiba at BB. All 3 of these computers are very similar in specs and after you add tax at BB to four fifty, the cost alone isn't going to make the decision.

The BB models look tempting because they have a newer i5-2430M processor compared to the i5-480M in this Acer. But you are not going to see much real-world difference unless you start doing something intensive like compress video or transcode audio. But keep in mind that the slow laptop hard disks will limit performance, thus blurring the difference. If you do that type of work, you should head over to BB. The older i5-480M runs at a higher clock speed of 2.6GHz (turbo boost to 2.933 GHz) compared with the newer i5-2430M running at 2.4GHz (turbo boost to 3.0GHz). The processors both have the same cache size of 3MB, but the newer i5-2430M has a faster system bus and memory type, though the difference in memory bandwidth is not large (17.1 GB/s vs. 21.3 GB/s). On paper you don't see too many differences that are important.-= some gimmickry with the integrated graphics like wireless display and some further wifi integration with the cpu. 99% of people will not know those things are there. To summarize... if you do graphics, video, simulations, etc, please navigate away from this page and get yourself the newer i5. (it has a 256bit instruction set extension called AVX that is optimized for this kind of work). If you don't do those things heavily and just watch videos (not edit them), browse the web, and use office, you are not going to get much benefit from the i5-2430M.

You might be thinking that even though you don't need those extra features of the new processor, you should have it anyway. You are absolutely correct, but the catch is that these manufacturers reach the low price by navigating a minefield of trade-offs. We decide who makes it and who doesn't. If you are getting the later processor, you should expect to lose something in return. A quick list is that this Acer has a 640GB hard disk (vs 500 at BB) and 1.3MP webcam (vs 0.3MP at BB). There are a variety of subtle differences where the BB models start to go cheap on things you do use. First is the display quality and contrast, the Acer supports 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN (BB Toshiba model only 10/100), the Acer has 802.11b/g/n wifi (BB Asus model 802.11n only; Hope your campus and work wifi are all 802.11n or you have a problem!). That killed the Asus option for me (and maybe you too). If you made this far, we are getting to why I picked up this Acer. The build quality is soooo much better and it is 0.6-0.8lbs lighter. The Asus was the worst build quality, but darn that 802.11n which probably isn't in the Starbucks or the airports yet. The Toshiba was easier to eliminate on the basis of weight, build quality, and the multi-gesture touchpad present on this Acer. And that is where I'll end the comparisons by saying that Acer did a fantastic job implementing the apple macbook-like scrolling and swiping. I have demos on more failed attempts to copy Apple's magic than I care to remember. Given how it is a laptop and I don't like those little touchpads to begin with, this is a huge relief!

If you are considering different models this Holiday season and are not sure what to buy, break up the problem and compare each point to make sure it will work for you. It is really best if you can handle them a bit before deciding. I can tell you though that this Acer is solid in comparison! Finally, please remember that if it seems too good to be true, it is. What I mean is that this $500 area is the sweet-spot and they compete like you wouldn't believe. Most of us read specs and think the answer is obvious. Look for where they are saving money and if you can't find it on paper go pick these up at BB. Unfortunately for Amazon the best features of this model are revealed in your hands.

Anyway, best of luck fellow laptop hunters. I do want to close by saying that Amazon does look stupid with this $629.99 vs $499.99 MSRP gaffe. However, many people are incorrectly arguing that the price of $499 (0% discount) means it's a bad deal. Had Acer and Amazon both both posted a $659.99 MSRP, and then this went to $499.99 for the LD -it may feel different but it would be the same computer at the same price. I'm pretty sure Amazon makes their money on these LDs while people are impulse shopping in between the headline items. I picked up a few things that way. This computer would have sold for at least $600 3 weeks ago. But if time is on your side, this will definitely get to 400 and down after the Holidays. This laptop was produced solely for this deal. They will burn off whatever inventory survives. Happy Holidays!

Acer Aspire S5-391-6419 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Black)

After a Month with the laptop I have to say, it impress me the way it boots, from turned off to ready to work it only takes 10 seconds, the SSD shines for this. This is a great laptop if you need a fast portable machine, the battery life is about 2 hours on a normal workload (Browser, Music, video and a Text editor). Just remember this laptop does not have a DVD/CD drive.

The only bad thing i could say about it, is windows 8, some of my work software (Music production/edition) and its interfaces were not windows 8 compatible, but the good thing is that this computer can be downgraded to windows 7, the drivers are available in Acer's site. I did the downgrade and it keeps the same performance as in windows 8.

The only reason I will not give it five stars is the way the ports are hidden. I am afraid an accident could come and the mechanism would be broken

I have been using an Acer netbook for a few years now. It has been flawless, but is small and hard to type anything significant on. I got the ultrabook because of my previous Acer experience, and so far it has been a oy. I even don't hate Windows 8 (my version of the rhyme of the day). It is light, fast, does what it says it should, and has a nifty Bluetooth mouse so I can ditch the touchpad when in my office.

What is there to say, really? I like it, think it is very, very good, and have zero complaints about it.

Samsung Series 9 NP900X4B-A02US 15-Inch Laptop (Mineral Ash Black)

This is my first non-Thinkpad computer since 1996. In the past few years I have been using T and X series. The new Thinkpads are heavy and screen resolution is not any better than other laptops. Particularly X220, which is useless with 768 vertical resolution. I chose this computer over Thinkpad T420s, HP Envy Spectre and Sony S 15.4 inch, because:

Pros:

1It is the lightest and thinnest laptop among 14 and 15 inch laptops.

2Has matte screen. I don't understand how people work on glossy screens.

3Is has HDMI, USB3, 8GB RAM, SSD and a solid build.

4It boots unbelievably fast. My work Thinkpad T420 has SSD hard drive but it takes much longer to boot.

5It is extremely quiet. Again, the most quiet laptop I have ever seen.

6Compare its spec. to Mac Book pro and Air to realize how advance this laptop is. It is lighter, has better screen resolution and boots faster.

Cons:

1Widescreen are not good for professional work. The vertical resolution is too low and you need to scroll up and down. At the same time you have empty margins on the right and left side of your window. But not Samsung's fault.

2Keyboard is not very comfortable, and you hit the mouse pad every so often. You somehow cannot type fast either.

3I prefer Thinkpad's Trackpoint. You work faster with Trackpoints. Again, not Samsung's fault.

4My scale indicates that this computer in 3.8 lbs and not 3.5 lbs mentioned in the specs.

Expect to spend some time installing Windows updates.

touchpad is about to take me over the edge. my hands keep hitting and moving cursor. i want to explode it's so frustrating. hoping there's a way to disable the outside edges. also click is not as easy as thinkpad. may be a deal killer for me. i have installed the latest driver. UPDATE: i installed a logitech bluetooth mouse which screwed up the driver... did a system restore and much better. now largest complaint for trackpad is the click, it can get confused clicking and moving mouse at same time.

screen is fine, not great, but more than sufficient for work, ok with video.

sound is mediocre. don't understand why they place on bottom, muffles sound.

keyboard is workable, but trackpad issue so bad that i'm starting to hate the keyboard as well. also may be a little smaller than my t500, so hands starting to cramp.

power strip, body is well designed, but plug enormous, and two wires... why?

I have had this ultrabook for about a week now and absolutely love it. I came from a 14.1" Dell e6400. The 15" screen is truely the perfect size. Dual windows work well on here. I love the lightweight factor at 3.5lbs. While comparing at the Microsoft Store, even though some were only a pound heavier, the light and slimness is worth the cost. Also this has much better battery than some of the other ultrabooks. The mouse pad is the latest and greatest. The boot and resume is extremely fast. Also the backlit keyboard is such a nice feature to type in dim to dark lighting. Additionally the screen autoadjusts immediately to changes in light which is nice as well. Hope it works out as well for you as it is for me!

Pros:

1. Beautifully crafted, blade thin and very quiet.

2. Boots up fast in under 20 seconds.

3. Not too much pre-installed software. Only a few Samsung utility programs unlike my Toshiba this one replaced.

Cons:

1. When typing, from time to time, my left thumb would hit the touchpad by accident therefore moving the cursor. The touchpad should be made smaller. But it can be turned off with Fn+F5 keys. This partially solves the problem as I always use a wireless mouse. But every time the laptop wakes up, Fn+F5 must be applied again which I often forget and is only reminded by the runaway cursor.

2. Low storage capacity. Out of the box, only 58GB is usable. I deleted the backup area on D drive thus increasing the capacity to 80GB. I use cloud backup since local backup is useless in case the hard drive dies or the laptop is lost.

3. Screen aspect ratio (16:9). I use this laptop mostly for work, not for streaming movies. I wish the screen were taller and narrower.

4. Dark finish makes fingerprints and palm prints show easily.

5. Samsung puts a Windows key between Fn and Alt (Ctrl, Fn, Windows, Alt). I use Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V for copy and paste all the time. Now Ctrl and C are four keys apart, V is even farther. I would have put the Windows key on the outside if included at all.

Conclusion: An exquisite machine with a few flaws I can live with.

Summary: love, love, love this laptop. My only regret is that I didn't it when I was traveling the globe 80% of the time.

It's a perfect fit for my style and hands. Others seem to struggle with the touch pad, but I don't have any issues. Just a few minutes and I had the feel for it. Very intuitive for me. I chose the 15" due to spreadsheet work. Otherwise, it wouldn't have been necessary. Maybe the bit more space is why it feels so good to me. Every other laptop I've used I wound up with an external mouse. Not needed for me with the Series 9. Excellent battery life and connectivity. Very fast boot and wake time. Super light, but doesn't feel fragile. Plus...it really does look smart and understated.

What would make it a 10?

normal size HDMI and LAN adapters, but I truly don't know where they'd fit. I've used it 2 weeks now and haven't needed either.

I bought this laptop as mainly something to carry around with me and do my writing on. For that, it works fantastically. Because it's Windows 8, I can separate the windows and write while I'm looking at reference material. But I'm also a gamer, and while I will need to buy a mouse to play more free-moving games like MMO's and FPS's that I tend to play, it plays RTS's and the KOTOR series just fine with the mousepad, despite it's overall lack of sensitivity.

Windows 8 is by far the hardest thing to get used to, especially with the special swipes you can use with the mousepad.

This is a fantastic system, and I recommend it to anyone needing something ultra-portable and that will handle what they want.

Bought this machine because the price was right and I needed upgrade from my ancient Dell desktop that I've nursed along since 2002 (bought it for college).

Out of the box, two things immediately jumped out: this thing doesn't weigh much more than a hardcover book, and good lord, is HP's "helper" application ever going to let me just use the computer?

First, the good stuff. The display is great, doesn't wash out from the sides or above/below nearly as badly as some machines on the market. The case feels sturdy enough, and the brushed aluminum looks sharp. Everything for your peripherals is easily accessible, and even without a latch, the clamshell action of the lid opening and closing seems to stay where you want it. Your various keys for screen brightness, volume for both external speakers as well as headphones, and wireless connectivity are all easily reachable and clearly defined on the keyboard, making it easy to adjust these settings to your preference right out of the box.

The cons? Not too many, Windows 8 notwithstanding, though that's not an HP problem but rather a discussion about the fundamental merits/detriments about the newest Windows platform, which HP has no control over. The BIOS setup is about like you'd expect, and for those interested in that stuff, easy to access as long as you're paying attention. The AMD dual core processor keeps things cooking along nicely, even with Windows 8 being slightly more resource heavy than Windows 7. I thought of investing in more memory, since Win8 takes 2 gigs to run, and this only has 4, but I plan to dual boot at a later date anyway. However, you're looking to be resource heavy, it might be worth it to evaluate your memory needs.

HP's updater is irritating beyond belief. Unlike Windows, where I can simply shut off notifications because I'm not a tech infant, these things insist on me updating completely ancillary programs that I don't use, such as CyberLink Media Suite. I realize that this may be aimed at people who are new to computing and/or haven't worked in tech as I have, but making the settings to shut down notification/automatic updates more visible and accessible should be a priority.

The integrated webcam is just like any other webcam that is immobilized in the clamshell...to have a good display while you video chat, you have to angle the camera in such a way that you'll have a lot of headspace over your outgoing picture. Can't be helped. The picture is clear, and the integrated microphone seems to pick things up reasonably well. I don't do much video chatting, so this really is beyond my scope of experience.

External speakers are tinny and underpowered, but that's par for the course with external speakers. Buy yourself a decent set of headphones and make sure your media player has some parametric EQ.

Not a bad little machine for the price. I'll say this, though, I'm trying to dual boot Ubuntu, and the UEFI crap is making it remarkably difficult. Without going into tech nerd specifics, just know that if your'e interested in dual booting a secondary OS, Windows 8 is a bratty, petulant, and jealous only child who does NOT want you to play with others. Do your homework before you go in, and you'll save yourself some headaches.

I would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone who is looking for a laptop rather than a tablet/netbook platform. My complaints are either about equipment I don't utilize (webcam, external speakers) or about the fact that the machine isn't catering to my demands which generally exceed the average user's desires from a computer (dual booting, worrying about system resources, BIOS setup). I've been thoroughly satisfied with it when looking at it objectively from a non-tech nerd perspective, and pleased with my venture away from Dell, which had been my desktop/notebook experience for a number of years.

The processor is 1.9 Ghz not 2.4 Ghz.

When I received this product I found out I had to buy the external cd drive to upload the programs. Second, I was not happy that the Norton Internet was only for a 60 day trail period, so my niece who I ordered this for has to purchase the product August 5th. This computer didn't include other programs such as Microsoft Word For Students. This would have been easier for me is I had ordered a laptop similar to the one I purchased last year which included a internal cd/dvd/blue ray player which made it easier to upload all my programs. Since my niece is inexperienced in this matter, she'll have to go to one of the computer stores(Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, etc) to purchase and upload the programs including one for her HP 3510 printer.
