Dell Inspiron 17 i17RM-2903sLV 17.3-Inch Laptop (Moon Silver)

Dell Inspiron 17 i17RM-2903sLV 17.3-Inch LaptopI've ordered this notebook on February. Very satisfied with It. One thing makes me annoying is the fan speed, but It is easly fixes by updating BIOS from DELL official web-site. Now there is no heavy fan speed! Just perfect!

I guess it is the fan in the computer. It makes a lot of noise. other than that it is great.

Works great a a computer should. The "keys" are a bit too sensetive, and sometimes skip around. I have been unable to lower the brghtness level on the computer. Other than these too features, it is great...works great, and is fast.

HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop

HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch LaptopCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program The two previous reviewers have given outstanding reviews on all the techie specs of this HP Envy Laptop. As such, I fear my average-plain-jane-user review is going to pale in comparison but hopefully it'll be helpful to those like me who use laptops but don't get into the nitty-gritty of the electronic.

Ok, so here goes -

I've always like the style and sleekness of HP laptops so it's no surprise that I love this one as well. It's beautifully designed with a smooth black surface that's fingerprint resistant which I love with children in the house!

Relatively lightweight, although still a bit hefty if compared to the ultrabooks or the like.

The colors exhibited in this model are just OUTSTANDING! So bright, crisp, and clear. Absolutely fan-flippin'-tastic for photos, videos, and graphics. Even Skype is more vivid with this laptop!

But then comes the Windows 8...

Allow me to confess right up front that I am not a fan of change, especially if something is working just fine, so I will be a bit jaded in this area. But, in my opinion, Windows 8 is basically a laptop with apps. While I love apps, ON MY PHONE or IPAD, I care nada for them on my computer. Not yet anyway. I spent hours trying to familiarize myself with the app system here and came to the conclusion that I do not like Windows 8. Give me my regular old windows button in the lower left screen that pops up all my programs by name and I'm happy. Hunting for them under an "organized" app system, no way!

In all fairness, however, my 20 year-old college son, thinks it's awesome. He says he loves the apps and thinks it organizes and simplifies things for users. So, maybe I'm just that old dog that can't learn new tricks. :)

If this computer had come with Windows 7, I would have given 5 stars easily. The laptop itself is FABULOUS! But the Windows 8 just wasn't for me.

This laptop arrived extremely fast which was great and it didn't take long to get up and running. There are some features I lovethe finger print reader is one of them, I appreciate the added security and it's easier than typing in a password. And the computer itself seems to be greatit's everything we were looking for. However, at this point I am completely unhappy with it and I think I have to blame Windows. Even in the desk top mode I struggle to find anything I need, then when I find it I have trouble using the program and often times can't even minimize or escape out of what I'm in. I think this software would be great if I were using it on a tablet, but I'm not and don't want to feel like I am, I have a tablet and iPhone for thatthis is supposed to be my computer and I want it to run like one. I'm trying hard to get used to it and learn it, but I'm frustrated now. I'll update my review if any progress is made, positive or negative, but since I find myself avoid this laptop we might be at a standstill.

However, if you're familiar and comfortable with this software I really think the laptop itself is solid. It looks great and has more bells and whistles than I need (if I could only use them!)

This is a great computer for business just because of one feature alone, the finger print reader. I like this alot, you can have it "read" any one of your 10 fingers. I suggest at least two, one on each hand in case you can't use one of the hands.

That said this is a nice laptop. The keys are easy to press and quiet. Mine luckily came with Windows 7, I had reviewed Windows 8 (W8) at a large retailer with the initials B.B. I was not impressed with W8. W8 is meant for tablets, if you aren't using a tablet or a touch screen then it's a pointless O.S. It can revert to the old W7 mode.

Right out of the box this computer looked for my Home Network Wi-Fi. Found it and set up to use it.

I own a number of laptops, I replace them fairly quickly because I don't like them for whatever reason. This one I got for business, I was unaware it contained a finger print reader for added security which is a definate plus. I got it for a new business I am starting and wanted a laptop different than the others I have. This is my second HP Laptop. I definately remind you to make a rescue/recovery CD a soon as you get it.

The sound by BEATS Audio is suberb for a laptop and of the 10 others I have this beats them all hands down. It even sounds better on the same Sharper Image headphones I was using on my Sony vaio.

I couldn't be happier with this laptop.

Ok, first off, I want to say that upon receiving the package, this laptop is extraordinarily light. When I opened up the package, I was holding a very, very elegant looking machine. It is beautiful; the brush midnight finish is one of the few laptop design cover that isn't a finger print magnet; it is awesome. So, now, lets get down to review:

The dv6 is a mediocre looking machine for specs on paper; don't let that fool you. This is a capable gaming laptop. This game runs COD4 on midsettings at 50 FPS, which is really nice, and plays Planetside 2 in midsettings at 45 FPS.

I removed a couple bloat (Such as Norton and some weird game program), and freed up startups and services on the msconfiguration via run command, and it is running very smoothly. The fingerprint scanner works flawlessly; I scanned all ten fingers and it works 18 out of 20 trials. Very nice piece of security. The screen is not bad, but I do kind of wished they had it up to like 1600 x 900 like the spec identical HP Envy dv7-7230us. The Beats audio is not bad, though I was disappointed at how quiet it is. At max volume, my phone (Droid Razr Maxx) is still louder, but the quality is fine. Now, as for Windows 8: I honestly have no idea why it is criticized so much. It is not so bad; just give 5 minutes to learn. That's all; as a matter of fact, Windows 8 is more like Windows 7.75; You can still access the original Windows 7 desktop by going to the "Desktop" tile/icon on the metro app starting screen. And if you need to access the settings, control panel, power, etc., then all you need to do point the mouse to the upper or lower right corner of the screen, and it will give you those options. I believe the reason why Windows 8 is so heavily criticized is because many, many people don't realize this, and chose to run choppy emulators online. I honestly love this laptop; if you are on a budget of less than $600, than this is a MUST buy! While there are more expensive relatives to this, this is actually pretty great for the money. Value > price. If you have any questions, please, feel free to ask them on the comments below!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I selected this laptop through an Amazon Vine offer thinking what is not to love about this laptop, but let me tell you it has beaten all my expectations. WOW! is what I kept saying after I took it out of the box and began getting to know this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop up close and personal. Before even turning it on, anyone would notice how lightweight and gorgeous it is. The finish is brushed aluminum in Midnight Black and it is absolutely perfect as it looks great and feels sensual to my touch. All the hardware is placed perfectly for maximum enjoyment and ease of use. I've purchased other members of the HP Envy line but I must say this HP Laptop is first I would say all the other laptops must ENVY this HP dv6-7210us!

The next feature I am most impressed with is the LED screen which has amazing depth to it. I love viewing photos and videos as they look even better on this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop than on my HDTV! This in itself is amazing as my 52" HDTV is always commented on by the different cable carriers of how my tv makes their feed look the BEST they have ever seen! Well this laptop adds even more depth and crispness to the photos and videos than that with its AMD Radeon HD 7640G Discrete-Class graphics and up to 3053MB total graphics memory! Amazing! This laptop has Beats Audio with the speakers the length of the laptop on both sides of the hinge and sound very good for any portable electronic device. Underneath the speaker screens is Beats Audio quad speakers and a subwoofer. Webcam also delivers a great video chat experience. The touchpad as well feels great to touch and use and includes the normal mouse moves including double tap, 2finger scroll, pinch or stretch to zoom, top-edge swipe to display app commands, right-edge swipe to display the charms (search, share, start, devices, and settings) and left edge swipe to switch between open apps. You can quickly return to the start screen by pressing the windows logo key on the keyboard.

HP SimplePass is a plus for me and I believe the scanner on this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop is more durable than previous models I have owned. I set up this laptop so that when I scan my right index finger, it launches my favorite website which is Amazon! I like that I can use my fingerprints as my passwords which I believe makes my laptop more secure from prying eyes and stealing hands and just makes access easier and faster for me.

This is my first introduction to Windows 8 and of course there is a learning curve but so far I like it. I like that it is linked to my Microsoft account which means that every time I sign into a Windows 8 device, my settings and custom tweaks will come with me and be applied. Because Microsoft accounts are linked to SkyDrive storage, Office 2013 will back up automatically uploading to the cloud. Windows Media Center will not be included for free in Windows 8 but right now through January 31, 2013, you can request a free product key for it at the microsoft windows website.

FAST! FAST! FAST! Using a 2nd Gen AMD Quad-Core A8-4500M Accelerated Processor with 6GB installed memory on 750GB 5400RPM hard drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection in Windows 8 really creates a fast machine. I have the fastest boot-up experience I've ever had on a laptop or desktop. Set-up was the fastest and most intuitive I've ever had. 3 of its 4 USB ports are 3.0! USB 3.0 is capable of transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps (gigabits per second); that's a little over 10 times faster than USB 2.0's 480Mbps (1,000Mbps equals 1Gbps).

The Amazon listing currently says 2GB RAMM in one place and 6GB RAMM in another place; 6GB is how much The laptop shows in the View Basic Information About Your Computer Screen.

Every place you look on this laptop is faster and better than before. Don't let the technology advances leave you in the dust.........

HP 2000-2b10NR 15.6-Inch Laptop

HP 2000-2b10NR 15.6-Inch LaptopI was a little bit nervous purchasing this laptop considering the specs listed on amazon's site are different. The top of the page says the computer has Windows NT operating system and the bottom said Windows 8. I took a chance and ordered the computer and I LOVE it.

Its very fast and picture quality is amazing. I love that it has an HDMI output. My only computer only had VGA. The difference in streaming video on the computer and onto the tv is amazing.

Windows 8 is taking a little while to get used to. I was using Windows 7 previously but I'm starting to get the hang of it.

The laptop is light weight, sleek and the keyboard feels good on your hands. Overall I def recommend this product. I think everyone will love it!

I recommend this laptop.

Used exclusively for work to demonstrate videos and photos to customers... play internet radio. It's fast enough with adequate memory and speed for what I use it for. Arrived on time (Prime is worth getting if you use Amazon a lot pay over $80 in shipping a year).

This is my 2nd HP and the other (HP G6) is still doing fine (8GB RAM)... I upgraded to 8GB RAM through Crucial [dot ]com and it runs over 12 hours a day and has been doing so since Fall of 2011. This model (4GB RAM) is capable of 8GB RAM for even better performance. Note that this comes with Windows 8 and I think runs better than my G6 where I upgraded from Win 7.

Get these 2 modules:

Crucial CT3695417

or Kingston or Corsair... all available from Amazon.com

Open the access area... battery compartment or entire bottom of the laptop, locate where the RAM slot is, remove the existing module by pressing down on the retaining clips, remove the module, get the new module and line up the notch in the row of metal pins at the bottom of your module with the key in the SODIMM slot on your motherboard. (If the notch doesn't line up right away, flip your module around and try it the other way. It doesn't matter which side of your module has the black chips or the stickers on it. The important thing is to line up the notch.)

Hold the module at a 45-degree angle to the slot and slide it into place. No more than 1/16" of the gold contacts should be showing when the module is properly seated in the slot.

MODULE:

FEATURE: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 PC3-12800

SPECS FOR RAM: NON-ECC * DDR3-1333 * 1.35V * 512Meg x 64

Hp Pavilion Dv7 Dv7t Quad Edition, 2nd Generation Intel(r) Core(tm) I7-2630qm (2.0 Ghz), 6gb Ddr3 R

Hp Pavilion Dv7 Dv7t Quad Edition, 2nd Generation Intel(r) Core(tm) I7-2630qm, 6gb Ddr3 Ram, 750gb Hd,blu-ray, Webcam, FingerprintToday (10/26/2011) is the second day I have owned and used the HP Pavilion DV7-6163us laptop, but I can tell you it is a Great Laptop for the money. Just a couple of items I found out after turning on the laptop: a) Very easy to configure / setup and register with HP in fact I thought I had overlooked a step because it was so fast and easy to setup. b) Very pleasantly surprised when on my laptop I began the setup of my Canon printer PIXMA MG5220 with WiFi and the laptop configured a wireless connection which was easy and without connecting any wires (obviously).

The speed and picture quality on the laptop is amazing. The laptop is a little on the big and heavy side when comparing to many others but this is a non-issue when you realize the features you are getting. I have not been able to confirm how long the 10hr-battery-life really is, but even some of the reviews give it over 7hr of heavy use.

My wife didn't want me to get a laptop even with our virus-ridden desktop sitting there without movement or usability. Now that I showed her how she can easily surf the net, print her reports, and look at and print pictures from a CD, she has now indicted that she really likes the new laptop. I hope I don't have to purchase another one even with the great price of $699 at Staples on a special sale.

I will submit an update if I find fault in this Great HP Laptop.

Don't plan on the nice little fingerprint reader and webcam working for more than a couple weeks. Have not been happy with it at all and now I have to mess with ATTEMPTING to get hp to look at it. For the price this thing sucks!

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5340 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5340 15.6-Inch LaptopI just purchased this computer for my girlfriend, and so far she loves it. I personally don't really like Windows 8 yet, especially when using the touchpad, but that is Microsoft's problem. The computer is fast, durable, and has a good sized screen. Perfect for her, as she mainly uses it for e-mail, movies, homework, and Pinterest. One thing to note is that the touchpad has quite a texture to it. Its a little awkward and doesn't have perfect touch response, and I foresee the pits collecting grime after a while. Overall, a great computer for the price!

The battery charge is good for users who travel. The keyboard is a tad funky. It will take some getting used to. Overall good product. I would purchase again.

I'll start by saying this is a review of the product NOT the operating system (Windows 8)

Screen Has a really nice size and very nice resolutionIt's clear and only has distortion at odd screen angles.

SoundIt lacks a bit and stays on the low side making it difficult to watch movies

KeyboardIt's amply spaced but a bit bouncy, almost like it's not installed correctly, but it is, it's just a loose fit.

USB3, and comfortable

Touchpadis textured, it takes a bit of getting used to but after a little you don't notice it.

appearanceit's just a laptop, there are no pretty lights or smooth finishes, no fancy colors or bells.

WeightEasy enough to carry around, but it's still a 5 pound laptop.

I like the machine, it's perfect for email, internet, pictures and netflix. It's low priced because it's just an entry level machine.

Gigabyte U2442D-CF1 14-Inch Ultrabook (Aluminum Champagne Gold)

Gigabyte U2442D-CF1 14-Inch UltrabookThis notebook could be improved in a number of ways, but since there's nothing else quite like it, I give it a full 5-stars.

Asus was supposed to release a similar notebook, as were a couple other manufacturers, but they turned out to be vaporware.

I searched high and low for a lightweight/ultraportable with a decent resolution (greater than 1366x768, this one is 1600x900) and a proper dedicated graphics card (2gb GT 730M).

The GT 730M is more than just a rebadged GT 640M as some sites have called it, it's has a higher stock clock speed (725 vs 625)putting it closer to the GT 650M and some reports have referred to the core as a GK207 vs GK107, w/ 24 ROPS vs. 16. I haven't yet figured out how to verify this, nor have I been able to get the latest drivers directly from Nvidia to load. On the subject of drivers, Gigabyte offers Windows 7 versions of all the software, drivers, and even a Windows 7 bios so you don't have to use Windows 8 if you don't want to.

The notebook really is light weight and runs quite cool. The stock msata SSD is the tried and true Crucial M4 which doesn't have the top benchmark numbers, but in real world use, it's a rocket. The notebook also has room for a second normal 7 or 9.5mm hard drive which is completely unheard of in a 'true' ultrabook. I believe the Gigabyte U2442D doesn't get to wear an "Ultrabook" sticker because it comes with an i5 instead of an i7, however the i5 is much faster than any of the low voltage dual core i7's and many of the previous regular voltage dual core i7's. i7 used to mean 4-cores with hyper-threading flagship performance, but now it just means at least $200 more on the sticker price.

A few things to consider if you're looking to purchase one of these notebooks; the aluminum lid has a gold-ish tint to it and the rest of it is just grey plastic. It doesn't really look premium and I slapped on a skin for the lid and a few stickers on the palm rest to keep it from getting scratched up too quickly. The screen is a traditional matte which is great for glare, but not so great for keeping clean or getting the sharpest colors. The notebook comes with Windows 8, which really sucks for productivity (but most computers come with Windows 8). The Nvidia Kepler architecture is great for gaming, but even with 384 Cuda cores, it sucks at openCL so GPU acceleration of programs like Matlab, Solidworks, Photoshop, Ansys, Comsol, etc aren't going to really benefit from the dedicated card like they would with an ATI/AMD dedicated card of the same level.

At the end of the day, it's a very capable, very light weight notebook for playing and getting work done. When the box arrives you will not be disapointed, the packaging is sharp and Gigabyte throws in extras like a very nice leather sleeve and a keyboard cover/screen cloth.

HP Pavilion DV4-2140US 14.1-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP Pavilion DV4-2140US 14.1-Inch LaptopI wanted a laptop for cruising the internet and general purpose use. I don't do gaming. This laptop fit the bill in nearly ever respect, but I was quite disappointed by the short battery life. It seems to discharge at a rate of about 1% per minute, so that gives 1.5 hrs of on-battery use. Yeah, you could extend the uptime by dimming your display but that makes it quite difficult to read. I'd say, if you want this laptop, plan on spending from 75 to 150 more for a 12 cell battery prices vary depending on if you get it from HP or aftermarket.

Lots of people have commented about the metallic touchpad but I don't find it an issue.

I love the touch sensitive volume control and mute button. Very handy, no fumbling around looking for the right key or key combo to adjust volume or mute.

Lightscribe works as advertised, kinda fun to make CD's and label them, but it does take a while (5-10 minutes).

I was tempted to give it just 3 stars (It's OK) vs 4 (I like it) and decided on 4 due to the value delivered.

I bought this laptop a year ago, and I regret it with all my heart. It just died, for no reason; never fell down, never spilled water on it, it just died. I wish I could give it five stars, since it was really an amazing laptop, was very stable, powerful in multitasking and visually nice. I was warned not to buy HP because of its overpriced, made-to-fail products, I've rejected to believe so, and now from my experience, I will never ever buy any product from HP. And to make things worse, a crappy customer service. Really, don't buy it. Just don't buy it.

I purchased this laptop directly from hp. In less than a year the battery died, the left mouse pad button was loose, the key board in the upper right corner became unattached, and the laptop made this weird buzzing sound. Luckily the warranty wasn't up yet so I received free repair. However, it wasn't long after the repairs that it started giving problems again (the same problems minus the keyboard detachment). I've had this laptop for 3 years. The left mouse pad mutton eventually fell out and now the mother board has crashed (not before costing me hundreds of dollars for repairing it the second time). Two of my friends have the same laptop and they both had the same problems as I did (they have also had their laptops for roughly the same amount of time that I have). One of them is still using hers but I doubt that will last for much longer. I definitely would not recommend this laptop to anyone.

Overall, great laptop i love it.

Acer Aspire E1 15.6" Core i3 500GB HDD Notebook

Acer Aspire E1 15.6' Core i3 500GB HDD NotebookThis is the best laptop available for the price. I initially bought an HP laptop for 599 and I had it for a week when I saw that Samsung had a comparable laptop on sale for 498 at Walmart, so I returned my HP and bought the Samsung. The Samsung was complete junk. I'm guessing that it had defective hardware because Samsung products are usually good. Anyway, I ended up with this Acer (based on recommendation from a friend) and I couldn't be happier. You just can't beat the specs for the price. If you are looking for a laptop in the 500 dollar range, I can't imagine getting a better deal than this Acer laptop.

It may be a little cheaply built at parts, but runs fast and works great. I have had no issues with the DVD player, USB ports, Audio/Head Phone slots or Ethernet cable slots at all. I use this labtop every day for daily things (school, work, ect) watching movies on it is great too! The screen is nice & Large, good for computer gaming too. I would recomend this computer for an average things, its not specific for any 1 purpose, which is why i love it. (It may be highly priced, so wait for it to go down a bit)

I bought my Acer Aspire 5732z at Office Max for just under $400. Performance-wise, it's an awesome little computer that's quick and fairly easy to use. I don't do any video games that would require a fast processor, so I can't comment on that. The only issues I have with it is 1)the power cord falls out very easily and many times I thought it was plugged in only to have the computer flash a low-battery message or, if I'm on a hidden-object game, just shut off. 2)the touch pad is off center, which takes a little getting used to, and it's very sensitive, so I'll be typing along and the cursor will suddenly jump up several lines. These issues are just minor aggravations, so I still give the laptop 4 stars.

If I could give it less than 1 star I would. This laptop is poorly designed and not worth the price listed here. For what its worth it when I bought it back in June was about 150 cheaper on newegg.com. The first issue I had was the video wouldn't work with my kvm, it was constantly flashing between video modes. The second issue and one that ultimately lead to its demise was the right mouse button built into the front surface. It's a smooth surface button built into the case and looks like it would be good to work with however due to poor design this one kept clicking on its own. The entire system was rendered useless because the right click was pretty much constantly 'clicking' on its own. I'd tap on it thinking it was stuck and it would be fine for about 5 mins, then it would start again. You cannot deactivate it in the bios or software either.

Want Acer Aspire AS5732Z-4598 NoteBook PC - Intel Pentium T4400 2.20GHz / 15.6" HD LCD / 4GB DDR2 / 250G Discount?

I bought this to replace my netbook that I loved, but accidentally damaged a while back. My netbook mostly met my needs and I liked its small size.

With the advent of Windows 7, some of the advantages of a netbook were lost, in my mind, anyway, so I sought something that would run Windows 7 Home Premium with ease and had an optical drive for a project I was doing at the time, and more comfortable keyboard.

This Acer was a perfect fit for me. I'd prefer a smaller footprint, but form really does follow function and the trade-off is really worth it.

The unit, plus power cord and mouse fit very well into my briefcase, while leaving plenty of room for other stuff.

Business people may prefer the more efficient processors that are coming out now, but for a casual user like myself, this one has what it takes and more.

I docked one star, because even though it's perfect for me, there are more powerful and efficient laptops out there for the power users among us.

Samsung Laptop / Intel Core i5 Processor / 14" Display / 4GB M

Samsung Laptop / Intel Core i5 Processor / 14' Display / 4GB MWe didnt get this laptop from amazon, but figured it would be nice to leave a review. My wife had a Toshiba laptop she bought in 2010 and after a few spills and damages from the kids the laptop fried in 2011. We took it to best buy where we got it and got this laptop as a replacement because of our protection plan. This laptop was actually more in replacement cost then her old laptop, but the store was past closing time by the time they were ringing us up and they just had a manager adjust the cost difference.

This laptop runs great, and has lasted our kids. The screen is glass covered and protects it from damage. The aluminum is a nice touch, but more of a preference. The chicklet style keyboard makes for a more simplistic, less cramped, keyboard. I prefer full sized keyboards with number pads for gaming, but this laptop was nice because I didnt have to worry about hitting too many buttons at once when I was moving around too much in the game.

The laptop works to play skyrim, battlefield 3, and many other games that I want, while my wife has a very portable laptop to tote around to wherever. The battery is good, the build quality is great, and for the price and value its definitely a winner. We even spent just a little bit of cash to upgrade to 8gb ram, and makes this all the better.

I have used many machines, I build computers, repair them, etc. So I know what to look for in a good laptop, and this definitely set the bar for similar value laptops.

The bottom line is that this is a good machine, and a great value for the price. For anyone looking for a nice laptop that has enough power to do what you need, without feeling like you are carrying around a bag of bricks then this is the perfect laptop.

I like the computer given me no problems I have a few games on it and just Browse the Internet .

other then that I don't do much more with it and can't say much more about it

I just wanted to say that the samsung touchpad is overactive, producing undesired clicks and gestures. The touchpad driver offers no settings to adjust sensitivity or to automatically disable whilst typing. The only remedy seems to be manually inactivating the touchpad by pressing Fn-F10, and constantly toggling the feature is tedious.

This pitfall certainly wasn't apparent while shopping for this notebook, and hopefully I'll remember to scrutinize it more closely in my next purchase.

First off, I've owned this laptop for 15 months, and it is a nice looking laptop, is fast, and offers plenty of space (640GB). There is another review here about the tempremental touchpad I agree 100%. My primary complaint is with Samsung, and with it's so called warranty. Six months after the purchase, my laptop got to the point where it needed to be plugged in 100% of the time. I would, at most, have 10 minutes of un-tethered laptop use. I called Samsung, thinking that it was a battery problem and asked for the battery to be replaced. I was told that this was not covered under warranty (which came as a shock to me), and they ran me through a diagnostic battery check with maybe added 10 minutes to my unplugged use, so the call to Samsung was useless. Battery life consistently got worse, so I decided to bite the bullet and just get a new battery. I had previously owned a Dell, so I thought popping in a new battery would be an easy and productive fix. Which brings me to the next topic it's an internal battery YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE BATTERY YOURSELF!!! Batteries plus can't do it either. Best Buy (where I bought the laptop) told me a new battery would run $120-$200 to change the battery, $100 or so for the battery, plus another $80-$100 to have someone "install" it. I paid over $800 for this laptop, and I think that A) Samsung should cover batteries under their warranties, and B) I should not be had this problem with a 6 month old laptop, and C) I should be able to change the battery myself. After this experience, I will not purchase a laptop with an internal battery, it's a deal-breaker.

14 months after buying the QX-410 from Best Buy, the battery died. I went back to Best Buy and was told that the warranty had run out and the only thing they could do was replace the mother board for $700 since the battery was soldered onto the motherboard. So instead of a $40 replacement battery, it's $700 for a motherboard. Bottom line: DON'T BUY THIS ONE! When it's going to cost $700 a year for a battery, nothing else matters.

Lenovo IdeaPad S405 14" Slim Notebook (AMD A6-4455M 2.10GHz CPU, 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM, 500GB HDD, AMD

Lenovo IdeaPad S405 14' Slim Notebook Model 20196, MO 59351953Having owned HP/Compaq notebooks for business (G6, CQ61, CQ62, NX series) for over seven years, I took the plunge out of HP into Lenovo and am very happy I did. Firstly, this notebook is a "budget" notebook, not a ThinkPad or Macbook Air, and should be compared with other budgets in its price range. It is ultra thin and very light. The 14-inch screen and the near-centered trackpad are best for my uses. Heat dissipation is excellent (no, it will not burn your legs while resting on your lap) and the unit is very quite. The keys are contoured to fit the fingers and require little pressure. The unit lacks a DVD drive but this is a direction taken by manufacturers to reduce weight and cost, and prepares the user for "Cloud" computing.

Aesthetically, upon receiving the unit, I immediately compared it to my Macbook Pro of 2009: sleek, slim and thin but at (what seemed) half the weight. The screen detail and color fidelity are very good for a budget model. The sound quality is satisfactory (as in most notebooks), and whatever narrowness in frequency range exists, it is partially compensated for by a "Dolby Advanced Audio" 10-band equalizer. The single USB 3.0 port speeds data to and from my HP Pocket drive (with USB 3.0) at blazing speeds (unit has two USB 2.0 ports also); wireless sensitivity is above average; trackpad fluidity is close to a Macbook's (smooth!); 4GB of installed memory can be expanded to 8GB; and the HDMI port and 500GB hard drive are essential assets. (Note: A 500GB hard drive model will have 400GB available due to Lenovo using disk space as a "recovery partition".)

I did not order a discontinued Lenovo Win 7 unit but leaped into Win 8 in December 2012 "culture shock!!!" But . . . this is the future for the PC world and even we "old timers" must grow with the times. Win 8 is a "work-in-progress" for sure, and in order to adjust at a more relaxed pace to this OS, as well as get up-to-speed and "productive", I suggest downloading "Classic Start Menu" or "Start 8". These utilities will bring back the "Start" button and menu familiar to users of Win 7, Vista, XP, etc., but remove none of the features of Win 8.

All in all, this Lenovo unit is well worth the money. Again, this is a budget notebook and is not a ThinkPad or Macbook Air, but to me it is top of the line of any budget notebook I've owned.

Smooth, sleek, fast, compact, light . . . and very cool!

I've had this computer for 2 weeks now. In that time I have come to realize just how sweet this little thing is. Obviously it is not a powerhouse for video editing or gaming, but for the normal online activities it is very good. I do keep the power setting on high, which seems to improve the speed of my web surfing. Windows 8 seemed daunting for the first couple hours, but it is so easy to customize and it boots up at such fantastic speeds. If you just need a competent little laptop that is inexpensive and has a great keyboard, but it now.

This is a good little computer. It's very slim and light. However, the graphics aren't great: everything has a bluish tint. Also, the mouse pad is just ridiculous. Most anywhere you click it, a menu pops up. You have to be very intentional about clicking it very near the bottom if you want to click and highlight text, for example. I would totally recommend this computer for any day-to-day activities, but I would also recommend getting a mouse. I haven't been using a mouse (I'll get one over the weekend), and frankly it's driving me quite nuts. But everything else is great--fast processor, lots of RAM, lots of memory...Windows 8 is fun, no complaints!

HP ENVY 14-1010NR 14.5" Laptop (2.40GHz Intel Core i5-450M Processor, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive,

HP ENVY 14-1010NR 14.5' LaptopIf I were a professor grading papers and if notebooks were research papers, the very first Envy 15 which debuted over a year ago definitely deserved a C+ grade. Imagine that the Envy 15 1st generation is a 5-8 page paper. A typical prof would give HP that very grade for good effort and creativity, but poor organization, sentence structure, and grammar and thus a rather low level of coherence altogether. The Envy 15 2nd Gen which came out less than a year after that corrected most of the infamous problems such as heating issues, creaky palmrests, and a jumpy touchpad. This refresh (or rewrite?) raised HP's grade to a B+. But while some may celebrate over a "most improved award," just as people tend to be more critical of a BMW 7-series than of your average, run-of-the-mill Corolla, the bar is set rather high for the luxury notebook segment that notebooks like the Envy and Macbook Pro fall into.

Now onto the Envy 14. This time around, the grade for this notebook is rather controversial and definitely open to debate.

The Envy 14 was released on June 27th. It was advertised as sporting HP's edge-to-edge 1600x900 Radiance Display which would afford the user better color reproduction and brightness than most if not all notebooks out there, yes, even better than the Macbook Pro's, ATI infin

Without the (continually updating) Google touchpad software that can be found in the Trackpad Discussion thread of Notebookreview, this notebook IMO stays on the accursed borderline 89.5% which for many teachers can be a B+ grade or an A-. But with a 3rd party touchpad software written by a few good souls on notebookreview forums that leads to greatly improved two-finger scrolling, the Envy 14 gets a 93%. Just shy of Abut still in straight A territory. Toss in the Radiance display and you indeed get a potential top of the class paper not to mention another reason(with others to follow) for the professor to hand HP a letter of recommendation.

NOTE: If anyone wants the Google software in question, go to notebook review forums (notebookreview.com), go to the HP section, and visit the HP Envy 14 Owners' lounge. The first page will have a link that takes you to the touchpad software lounge. Make an account and ask people to redirect you to the software because my goodness, you WILL want the drivers designed by reil for smooth 2-finger scroll! Ask someone there for reil's Google touchpad software.

There's also a way to configure bottom left, bottom right and upper right as deadzones. I've configured the top right as right-click, the bottom left as go back a browser page, and the bottom right zone as go forward a browser page. Ask people on the Envy 14 notebook owners' lounge how to configure it!

To HP: Great job. You not only get the most-improved award in my grade book. You get a 93%, which rounds up to an A. Not a strong A, mind you, but an A nonetheless. Keep up the good work, and work on those lingering issues. I expect to see great things from you in the future.

What I liked:

(1) Edge-to-edge screen. I don't mind for now that it's not genuine glass. Still have to admit the edge-to-edge black border gives the screen a nice look.

(2) Radiance Display Bravo. Need I say more? If this screen isn't good enough for photographers, I don't know WHAT is!

(3) Keyboard It's simply fantastic. It's a joy to type on. The LED backlit keyboard may not be bright as the Macbook Pro's, but it's still bright enough to use at night time when there's low or no light.

(4) Aesthetics I've already drawn many glances with this notebook. Also to those who're concerned with how "fruity" the design looks, the laser etchings really grow on ya. The thin/light form factor and the laser-etched drawings really ooze of quality and refinement when you hold it.

(5) Specs With the i5 processor and the ATI 5650, you can game on StarCraft 2 easily at medium settings. My suggestion is still to get a cooling pad as thin and light notebooks CAN get hot.

A few critiques on areas which upon consideration and improvement will put the Envy 14 closer to A+ territory:

(1) Keep working on the touchpad software and install a real clickpad. Work with Synaptics on improving it so that we don't have to rely on the good will and charity of software coders in the NBR community. Improve 2-finger scroll and toss in inertial scrolling, 3-finger swipes, and 4-finger swipes.

(2) Consider doing away with the optical drive when the time is right. I understand some people need their DVD drive. That's fine. But in the future, if it'll shave off a lot of weight and allow for the installation of a 3rd fan, I'm willing to pay the usual $40 for an external optical drive. (Yes, it's true. The HP Envy 15 comes with 3 fans because the absence of an optical drive creates enough real estate for the 3rd fan)

(3) Backlit keyboard This isn't really a criticism. But making the brightness adjustable would certainly tempt me to toss in another % point to your grade.

(4) Build Construction I had an argument with the other "professors" over this. A tiny bit of keyboard flex which I myself barely noticed is fine for now. A little flex with an optical drive to boot is understandable. I gave you a high score in this area, but try to get rid of the flex. Until then, repeat after me: Perception. Matters. Take this from someone who worked several months at Subway serving some really particular customers!.

(5) Find a way to get rid of that God-awful CPU whine. I know this isn't HP-specific, but if HP could find a way to reduce the sound or get rid of completely, that would be a Godsend!

************UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2010************

It's been about a month and a half since I first bought and started using the Envy 14. I have to say that two issues really bothered me:

(1) Synaptics engineers decided to be a bunch of lazy jerks by omitting the option to turn off the touchpad while typing. I mean, seriously? If you're going to specialize in something, the least you can do is do the job right!

(2) The screen touches the keyboard when closed. The interesting part is it doesn't leave behind any permanent scratches. It just leaves smudges.

The first problem was easily solved by installing a third party software called "Paradisoft Touchpad Locker. Google it and you will find it. It is free and easy to install.

I've found that my touchpad problems have been reduced by at least 90% as a result of the software.

I purchased the Envy 14 to replace an old Dell 6400 which was crashing and overheating constantly. Vista is probably the cause of all its woes but I needed new hardware anyway. The Envy runs considerably cooler despite the more advanced hardware (used HWMonitor to compare) it was easily a 40 degree difference.

The Envy is sleek and powerful pretty much handles anything I throw at it. Instead of pros/cons I'm just going to list some gotchas so that people are aware of some of the quirks of this product

Build quality I've read about issues with build problems with the chassis but my own laptop is perfect. No issues with dead pixels, bent frames or misaligned trackpad.

Alignment of ports Unlike my old laptop, the Envy has no ports on the back. They are all on the sides. This is only really an issue if you have a million USB devices and connect to a monitor. It will tend crowd out the sides of the laptop with cables. Even the power cable connects from the side. Doesn't really bother me but might bother folks used to having everything organized behind the laptop.

Display The Radiance display is no longer available. I think they went out of business. I am happy with the Brightview its clear and sharp so it meets my needs. If I need something more dramatic, I just link my Envy to my HDTV via HDMI and use that as a gigantic monitor.

Video card If you get anything other then then i7 you will have the ability to switch between the integrated graphics and the discrete graphics card. This is great for battery life as the ATI is a power hog. However, this is controlled by software so you are more or less bound to the HP drivers. If you are doing a clean install, you need to install the HP drivers first don't just put the ATI drivers in or you lose the switching ability. While this laptop isn't designed as a gaming rig, the ATI Radeon can handle its own. I'm able to get SC2 to run on medium high with no issues.

Pre-installed Software Some people really dislike all the stuff that come preloaded with the laptop. You can do a clean install (follow the instructions on NBR) but I wouldn't recommend this unless you comfortable tinkering with OS installs. You can run into odd stuff related to drivers and the like. Another option (which I did), is to just go to the control panel and uninstall the software you don't like. I kept the HP webcam and Wireless Assistant since I found them useful. Mine also came with Adobe Elements and Premiere which isn't bad for pre-installed software.

CPU choice I was initially tempted to the get the i7 for the raw power but instead opted for the i5 once I learned that it came with integrated graphics. This helps conserve battery life when off the A/C and runs cooler overall. This laptop wasn't going to be near an outlet at all times so I needed something that could balance power with battery life so I found the i5 to be perfect for that use. The i7 has to use discrete graphics all the time.

Trackpad I use a mouse so I don't use it much. However, I wish that it was more offset to the left. If you want to disable the trackpad (from responding if your palm brushes against it while typing), double tap the upper left corner. An orange light goes off indicating that the trackpad is off.

Bluetooth This is really a software issue but I will note it here since it really bugged me until I figured it out. Sometimes my mouse would lose connectivity to my laptop randomly. I thought it was a battery issue but then discovered that it was the driver doing something odd. If you go to the properties of the Bluetooth radio (not the enumerator), there is a tab called Power Management. Unclick the option that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". Viola problem solved!

Overall, I'm pleased with my purchase. I guess I was lucky not to get the odd build issues that others have reported. In terms of what I use it for, it works perfectly.

If your graphics is switched to on board you will experience choppyness in 1080p videos on youtube. You do not get this issue when the 5650 is switched on. I cay play starcraft 2 comfortably on medium high settings.

Battery Life: I purchased this laptop primarily for use in school. I use it about 3 hours every day I have classes and the battery will last when switched to on board graphics if it is fully charged the night before. I would say it has about 3 hours of battery life. Obviously this is depending on your brightness settings and what you are doing on the laptop at the time. With the 5650 turned on the battery life is poor at best. If your an IT major I would say to not get this laptop and instead go one with similar specs without switchable graphics since you will most likely have a plug near by.

Grahpics: The 5650 is a good all around card that will still allow you to get up to about 2 hours of battery life. With this card you can easily play starcraft 2 on medium high settings. You can easily watch 1080P videos with the dedicated card as well. If you turn on the on board intel gma graphics, you will experience choppyness on high quality videos on youtube. Skype video calling and basic flash sites will run fine though.

Performance: I am extremely happy with the core i5 in this build. It is a very powerful duel core with hyper threading. I almost prefer it to my Athlon X4 on my desktop build. 6GB of DDR3 is more than enough for a year or two to come. I never cap out. The 500gb 7200 HDD is fast enough to handle anything you can throw at it an SSD would be nice but whats in there is not noticeably slow at all.

Software: ATTENTION!!!! If you buy this laptop DO NOT WORRY ABOUT BLOATWARE! Immediately after I turned it on I booted into HP Recovery and did a minimal recovery. This got rid of EVERYTHING except the drivers. The HP Cam software and the HP update/warranty software. Simply amazing. Sony offers this feature for $50 when you purchase a laptop from them. So happy that HP included this. That is probably why mine is running so fast is due to the lack of bloatware :)

Other thoughts: The Keyboard is great. At first I thought it was a little too small but its perfect. I was originally attracted to a Vaio because of the huge nice keyboard. This one is pretty darn good.

The track-pad sucks. Buy a mouse..

Back lit keyboard is very nice and is pretty classy :)

quick brightness controls work well and effectively.

DVD Drive works great and speakers are great sounding compared to other laptops.

No one can dispute the HP Envy 14's Radiance Infinity LED display is the best display on any laptop in this class. It's 50% brighter than anybody else's. (Sorry Mac Book Pro users) Unfortunately that isn't the display for sale with the system listed here. This is just to give anyone checking out this system the information to make them an informed consumer. (By the way, the Radiance Infinity display will set you back $200 additional.)

Overall I love this laptop, the screen display and back lit keyboard are wonderful, can't be beat. The processor is fast and the machine is beautiful to look at. Not too much bloatwhere came with it. Didn't have any keyboard issues.

Pros: Speed and screen display

Cons: Lot heavier than I expected, short battery life, and I had to purchase a VGA converter cable (I present and I was sorry to see that it didn't come with the machine).

Over-all I would purchase the machine again for use at home, and would recommend to anyone who wants a good laptop for home use, too heavy for business trips and conferences.

Dell XPS M1210 Core-2-Duo T5600 (1.83ghz) 2GB 100Gb Dvd+/-rw

Dell XPS M1210 Core-2-Duo T5600 2GB 100Gb Dvd+/-rwI purchased this laptop a few years ago and it was absoulutely awesome! It was listed with Dell as a gaming computer and it was good for games as well as all of the work related things I needed to do. Just under 5 pounds it was pretty easy to tote around when i was on work related trips. This model is the last XPS that Dell made with a 12.1 screen. The dementions of this laptop is a nice "in-between" size: it is a bit bigger than a netbook but also a bit smaller than a laptop with a 13" screen.

This baby has 4 USB ports and that is a bit difficult to find these days. You never think you are going to need all those USB ports until it happens! The hard drive is upgradable to a 500GB if you want to go that high (I upgraded mine to a 320GB and it worked fine. Everyone that saw it loved it! I even had offers to purchase it but I always refused!

Also, not only is it nearly impossible to find a laptop with this size screen, number of USB ports but to have all of this AND it's Core 2 Duo AND it has a CD/DVD+RW drive is a dream come true. The only problem that I had was that the regular battery only lasted two years so I had to buy another one. If that is the only issue with a laptop, I think it's worth it.

So if you want something small, but not to small and you want it to have the capacity to handle all the bells and whistles you may later want to add, this is a perfect choice!

For the money, this is a great computer. I replaced a 17.3" seven-year-old Toshiba that was still good, but slowly dying, so I wanted something with a similar feel. The keys aren't squishy, so I can touch type easily. The screen is big and bright for my not-so-young eyes. The only sorta negative is the shiny black surface. With two cats, it shows their flying fur but it doesn't seem to pick up fingerprints, which is a plus. Have had it only a day, but so far no negatives.
