ASUS ROG G75VW-RH71 17.3" Gaming Notebook PC - Black

ASUS ROG G75VW-RH71 17.3' Gaming Notebook PC - BlackEnjoying everything about my new laptop, from the back-lit keyboard that can be turned off, to how long the charge lasts. It's quick, screen is easy to view. Keyboard has a positive feel but not stiff. Yes, it's heavy but I wanted it for a replacement desktop so won't be hauling it around. Plenty of ports, pleased they are on the sides so no struggle to use them. Fans are quiet and they are at the back. I've not had any problems with heat, any sort of odd behavior.

Windows 8, well, that's taken longer to deal with and honestly wish I'd purchased the same laptop with Windows 7. Who wants to pay an extra $70.00 for Windows Media Player is one of the easier things to gripe about. But that is on me, not Asus!

Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase.

Dell Inspiron i17R-2895PNK 17-Inch Laptop (Pink)

Dell Inspiron i17R-2895PNK 17-Inch LaptopThese are my impressions after using this Dell Inspiron 5720 laptop for a week:

The Intel i7 3rd gen. CPU is very fast and a pleasure to see in action. All of my Windows 7 applications are accomplished in record time. The Intel Graphics 4000 HD can keep up with any game I've loaded with ease. The Intel WiDi system sends HD audio and video to my 42 inch LCD TV via a Netgear PUSH2TV HD PTV2000 1080P Adapter for Wireless Display. Movies played on this laptop through the WiDi system are DVD quality. The Bluetooth on this laptop connects to my wireless stereo headphones with great range throughout an over 1000 sq ft multi-room structure. The Windows Experience Index is as follows: 7.5, 7.8, 6.5, 6.5, and the lowest disk data transfer rate: 5.9. The laptop's display is large and very clear (1600 x 900.) The 4 USB 3.0 ports are incredibly fast compared to USB 2.0. The sound system on this laptop is amazingly high quality for small speakers, including a small sub-woofer! Using an Inspiron 15R N5110 (Core i5 2nd gen.) as a reference, this laptop operates at a much lower temperature (estimate 50% less heat) so using it as a true "laptop" is very comfortable. The Switch lid system makes it very easy to change the cover; only blue, pink, and grey are available from Dell as of this review.

Please note: As with all new computers I own, I backup the original HDD image via Dell's Backup Software to 3 DVDs then reformat the HDD and install my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Dell's latest drivers and BIOS update. The above review was completed after I accomplished these actions.

The unit arrived with a defective motherboard and audio issues. Wasted a great deal of time on line with tech rep in India before he concluded the motherboard was defective. In the process he downloaded software which froze-up the computer requiring a restore that wiped out programs and configurations I had spent a great deal of time creating. The local repair service did arrive in 24 hours. However, some type of reconfiguration is needed after the repairs; I have now been advised I will have to waste more of my time with a tech rep because the service tag no longer matches the motherboard. I am having trouble loading many sites. The computer freezes and won't allow scrolling on about one site-in-three. The optical drive supplied with the unit is less than flimsy. I am having issues with the apostrophe key which alternately does not work or types two apostrophes. ''' Poor quality control is evident with this product. Sorry I bought it.

SupplementThe keyboard and motherboard have now failed a few hours after this review. Spent an hour on-line with India again and a repair tech is coming out. Dell should replace this junk

2nd supplement-This 8-day old computer got it's 3rd motherboard and a new keyboard today. The repairs did not fix the scrolling or typing problems. Dell agreed to ship me a new unit. However, this will be the 3rd time I have to configure and network one of these units and download my programs. I will have 25-30 hours of time wasted on the phone, with techs at my house and setting up a unit. Mere replacement fails to properly compensate a customer. Next time I will buy at Walmart where they take defective computer returns no questions asked.

The replacemet arrived yesterday. It has a dead pixel near the center of the screen which is annoying in a "new" unit. Can't tell if this one is new or reconditioned. The condition of the clear plastic keyboard protector hints at the latter. It works better than the old one but still has a scrolling freeze problem on the internet intermittantly. JCW

I'm not one to take the time to review many of my purchases, this has been such a nightmare that I must warn all other potential buyers. I've had the laptop for about a year now,

within the first month, usb ports did not work, i called dell they wanted me to mail them the laptop back for repair and they would return it within 2 weeks, I'm a wealth manager and use this laptop for work, i spoke with their supervisor and was able to get a tech to come to my office to fix it.

they had to replace the whole motherboard not just usb ports. after repair, within a week, modem and other components did not work. i called them again, they ended up sending me a whole new laptop, i had to spend the time to transfer all my data to the new laptop. The new laptop usb ports also did not work. I called them again and gave up on the repair, i can handle having some faulty usb ports, sometimes it doesn't recognize my dvd/r drive, good thing i don't use it for work.

a couple months ago, i started having some problems with the typing cursor, as I'm typing it jumps around and automatically jumps to a different part of the screen making it difficult to type full sentences.

I bought this thing from Fry's on sale, the salesperson even told me not to buy it, he recommended lenovos or asus laptops instead, i didn't listen thinking he was just incented to sell the products. I used to trust dell because their desktops are reliable, not the case with the laptops. Save yourselves major headaches and go with a different brand.

Eluktronics was very helpful answering questions quickly and got it here when the said they would.

I am very happy!

I bought this to replace an existing laptop and decided to give this upgraded model a try. I received it sooner than expected and it's been great since I first turned it on. The HD screen upgrade is well worth it and makes streaming videos, movie trailers, etc. a much more enjoyable experience. It boots up unbelievably quickly, less than 30 seconds for a full shut down and reboot. I also went with the extended life battery and it lasted me 8+ hours with normal use, (surfing, e-mails, a few You Tube videos) before getting any kind of low battery warning. I really don't have anything negative to say about this purchase.

I love this computer. It is lightning fast and I love Windows 8. Anyone who uses a smart phone will not have any problem using it. And the desktop screen is very similar to the old windows. I love the very quick start up and shut down.

It does have a digital memory card reader and the fingerprint reader.

It's a great computer and I'm very happy I chose this one.

ASUS G750JX-DB71 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS G750JX-DB71 17.3-Inch Laptop* UPDATE

My replacement laptop is great, (thanks to Amazon's awesome customer service) there is no audio problem with the headphone jack in this one. There was only one other user online I heard from who had a similar problem. I still don't like the

matte screen, but that's a personal preference. It would also be nice to have the blue ray burner included instead of just DVD. However, again, this is still the best laptop out there in its class.

===

(orignal review

Please note there is a hardware issue (at least with the JX verison) of this laptop that creates a hissing and popping sound when using the headphone output. Normally with laptops there are a lot of electronics inside the computer that can interfere with on-board audio, but ASUS advertises this computer as having advanced audio, and specifically a "exclusive" headphone amp. I've updated the audio driver per ASUS tech support, and the problem still exists. Tech support says its most likely a hardware issue. I've browsed other forums online including the ASUS Republic of Gamers forum, and other users report the same problem. The screen also features a matte finish, which to my eyes (I'm a photographer, and use photoshop A LOT), it appears as if I'm looking through a screen covered with grease or some sort of dirty screen. While, this is something I could get over considered many matte screens look like this (but not ALL), the audio quality is something I cannot handle for the money. Other than that, the system is super fast, the cooling is great, and it is a beautiful machine other than the concerns above. I hope ASUS fixes the issue.

Let me start out by stating that, this is my first true gaming laptop purchase. I was never much into PC games since I said goodbye to my teenage years and "Duke Nukem". Since then I have been faithful to my gaming consoles and never looked back... untill now.

The Asus G750JX is a powerful machine and one that fits me right. I recently installed " BioShock Infinite" and I must say, this game runs flawlessly on Ultra settings. This is only my first game played on this machine so only time will tell if it holds up to every other games I throw at it.

I was on the fence in purchasing this laptop due to its pricing, considering that, the competition (MSI GT Series, Clevo/Sager, Toshiba Qosmio, etc) offer configurations at the same price range but with a higher/premium GPU (780m). The reason I went with the Asus G750JX is first, due to the design, and second, the amazing "DUAL" fans. The built quality of this product is excellent. It looks great and feels less bulky than other competing offerings. Other manufactures offer extremly ugly looking and bulky laptops. My second point in favor for choosing the G750 is its dual fan cooling system.

One of my fears was having a powerful GPU with a single fan solution for cooling. I say this because the hotter your machine gets over a certain threshold, the more likely it is to malfunction or die on you early. This laptop keeps me comfortable in knowing that heat will never be a problem and my investment will last me for the long run. The NVIDIA 770m GPU is plenty fast and thanks to the dual fans, I have yet to feel any signs of overheating hiccups.

I am glad to say that the OS is installed in the SSD drive. I personally took out the standard mechanical hard-drive and installed a second 256GB SSD that I had purchased last year on Amazon. Although this setup is giving me less data space to work with (512gb vs1,256gb), it did wonders to my battery life. I am getting roughly 4.5 to 5 hours of battery life now when doing light tasks, such as surfing web and editing documents.

Sound quality is great, crystal clear and loud, although not very loudest I have experienced. Screen has excellent viewing angles and is anti-reflective. Keyboard is excellent. It does not fell cramped and provides good key feedback. Also the metal casing around it makes it even better (aesthetically).

Overall this is an amazing laptop that was worth the buy. The only con I can list is the lack of a " Bluray" player. At this price range a DVD player just doesn't cut it, especially when this laptop is meant for gaming and entertainment.

I love this computer for the fact that I like to enjoy my games for smooth play, excellent quality of the game details that this computer can handle for example ultra quality on skyrim.

I have owned my Dell Laptop for a year and have no complaints. It can get pretty warm with graphic intense games, but so did my old laptop, which would freeze up every few minutes. My favorite features are the backlit keyboard and slot-load DVD drive. I miss the plethora of USB slots, and prefered the earphone jacks up front, instead of on the side, as they are on the XPS. The screen makes movie-watching fun. I carry it to work almost daily and reccomend a case of substance as it feels quite heavy. Probably not a good idea for a travel laptop; it is billed as a desktop replacement, but it works well for me on the go.

Pros:

Somewhat lightweight (I don't think they include the battery weight in the specs)

Low profile

Cons:

Comes installed with Windows 8 (the worst OS on a computer, ever)

When trying to downgrade to Win 7, HP offers absolutely NO support

Battery life is not very long

UPDATE:

After less than two months, the screen is already scratched...by the keyboard, itself! the small lip above the trackpad has been hitting the screen and has caused permanent pitting on the screen. Absolutely awful design, demoting it to one star.

I haven't used it much yet, but compared to my old netbook with the Atom processor, it flies. Downloading and installing applications such as Open Office, required 98% CPU which drove the cooling fan quite hard, and initiated a warning window of excessive CPU usage. Nice quality graphics. I bought it for College use and not gaming, so it appears like it may be fine.

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0GHz 3GB 250GB DVD±RW 15.4" Vista Home Premium w/W

Toshiba Satellite A305-S6872 Core 2 Duo T5800 2.0GHz 3GB 250GB DVD±RW 15.4' Vista Home Premium w/WebcamI have always used an HP for my computer needs. My husband surprised me with this Toshiba model for Christmas. We have a friend who is a web designer and gave him three suggestions, one being this Toshiba. I can honestly say I was skeptical, but after initial set up I am more than impressed. The sleek design catches your eye right off the bat, and the fact that I have a web cam and Skype are certainly upgrades that I enjoy! If you want a laptop that has all the bells and whistles without over doing it, try this Toshiba! you won't be sorry!

I bought my Toshiba Satellite just before Win 7 came out. Everything was fine until I upgraded. Since that time (2+ years) my microphone, camera and LabelFlash have ceased to function. I've spent countless hours on Toshiba's sites only to learn I am not alone. I find it incredulous that a major computer manufacturer would fail to anticipate software upgrades. What is it the kids say? "Duh." From my point of view Toshiba has made absolutely no effort to address these issues. It's about time for me to buy another computer and I promise you it will not be a Toshiba. See for yourself. Enter the model number and read the Toshiba forum. Notice how not one of these problems is resolved for countless hapless owners.

HP Pavilion dv6-3010us 15.6-Inch Laptop

HP Pavilion dv6-3010us 15.6-Inch LaptopI bought this unit two weeks ago from the office store named after the stadium where the Lakers play. The tech manager recommended it based on the specs, price and the fact that it had the lightscribe laser that could firmware upgrade to the new color lightscribe and a DVD burner that could easily be replaced by a Blu for about $99 via HP direct, if I wanted. It also can be upgraded to 8GB of RAM, something not all of the newer notebooks can do...many still max at 4GB. They had it on sale for $200 off list, then I had a $50 off any computer coupon, $50 for trading in an 8 yr old desktop, and there is a $50 rebate out there, for those willing to find it. At this price, I figured, "what the heck, I really didn't need that Core i5 that much, did I?"

Wow, now that I've owned it for a while, I am impressed. This unit is light for a 15.6" lappie and runs cool, I get almost 4 hours on the std battery (6+ hrs on a recently purchased 9 cell!) and it is fast and easy to use. It took a while to get used to the keyboard (HP trying to emulate Apple here...island style with no num pad) and the touchpad is challenging, at least to start (again, the Apple emulation thing....): however, I love how easy it is to turn off the touchpad and, with the built-in bluetooth...something you don't find all of the time in these lappies...it is easy to just add a bluetooth mouse, and away you go. Internet connection is great, with the unit smacking my Dell netbook upside down from any spot in our home....

Typically, HP has their bloatware installed, but that can be easily fixed. As others have reported, the USB ports are a little tight; however, I've had no issues with them at all. I love the new 'champagne' color as it shows no fingerprints at all compared to their previous units. I would have preferred the AC connection to be on the back instead of the right side; however, I can work around this. The speakers sound great for a low-end lappie...might've liked a little more volume on the top end but: what the heck....

The screen is bright and resolution/picture quality is excellent for a low-end lappie. Built-in webcam is OK, however, I would have preferred a higher resolution; however, the built-in bluetooth more than makes up for this as I use the bluetooth more. The AMD dual core proc with premium ATI graphics is a workhorse and does it's job well. A high-end gamer machine? Nope...what do you expect for this price?

Not sure about those who rate this poorly. They must've gotten a bad unit 'cause I'm quite pleased, especially for the price.

Recommended, especially if you can get the price down like I did.

Let me start by saying that I have had this computer for about 8 months and that I only paid 450 for it new. That was the reason I bought it, other than I have an old HP laptop that is still kicking (longer than my moms, wifes, and brothers Dell). So I suppose I am partial to HP's. The reason I am writing this review is because in hindsight I wish I would have spent more and got either a better overall computer or at least one without this AMD processor.

The Good:

-Screen is nice bright and crisp

-Lots of ram and features for the money

-Keyboard is pretty good but does feel a little flimsy(has not broke yet so it must be ok)

-Solid hinges: have not loosened over time

-Windows7 Is a huge upgrade from my old HP that still had xp

The bad:

-Battery only lasts about 2 hours unplugged(sometimes less)..on the good side, the charge still holds the same as new

-Cooling fan: Gets ridiculously loud(always has)...it sounds like its going to get up and fly off the desk. I know its to cool the processor but should it really get that hot? ...maybe that is why the battery life is pretty short

-Start up time: I know it is not an Apple but why can you start them in literally 2 seconds and be on the internet and this takes 2 minutes(come on Microsoft).

The Really Bad:

-Touch Pad: Absolute garbage. It does things if you are typing and your fingers are merely close to it...It is so obnoxious when typing because it will all of a sudden move your cursor to some random spot in your paper so now you are typing into the middle of your paper, and have to erase and then go back. IT DOES THIS ALL THE TIME. If I had known about this, I would have not bought this PC.

On a good note, you can disable the touchpad. I bought a wireless mouse to overcome this and it is now fine. (Microsoft 4000:first battery lasted 5 months and I never even turned it off!)

Buy HP Pavilion dv6-3010us 15.6-Inch Laptop Now

So I looked at the negative reviews and I must disagree. I work on several computers every day and you must adjust to each keyboard so to blame the "extra keys on the left" for mistakes are user error. My system has been flawless so far, had it since October 10. I have done 2 bios updates and as long as you don't screw with it when updating they work just fine. Now to the track pad yes it is a little sanative but with use you can master it. I almost always use an usb mouse with this system and that solves it all.

All in all a nice system for a decent price have recommended it to several people who are satisfied with theirs too!

I have had this computer for a few years now and I am about ready to throw it at a wall!!!!

It has overheating problems like crazy because the "brilliant" engineers at HP put the heatsync for the cpu right in front of the fan so it collects dust there and causes the laptop to get very hot and overheat! By hot I mean singing to the skin! It is so hot that an dual-fan cooling mat won't even keep it from overheating!

The overheating has also greatly affected the battery life limiting it to 5 minutes! It is practically a desktop!

The trackpad is also very annoying and I greatly prefer to use a wireless mouse.

Another downside is that if you do a fresh install of say Windows Ultimate, nothing works! NOTHING! You have to somehow get all of the drivers from HP's website and install them on your laptop!

Then we come to the processor itself! An AMD Turion II processor... I do not have a clue what I was thinking buying this! It can't do half of what I'd like it to! I have now grown to distrust and hate most of all HP products!

Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro (with Retina display) quad-core Intel Core i7 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB flash

Apple 15.4' MacBook Pro quad-core Intel Core i7 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM, 512GB flash storage, Intel HD Graphics 4000, Mac OS X LionThis is my first mac. I love it.

o SSD drive for quick boot. Its so fast its amazing.

o retina display is the best screen I have ever had.

o Lots of memory and cpu power. It runs so fast, its worth the price.

o Size is wonderful. Its light and thin.

Bottom line, its pricey but worth it. I would recommend it to someone who wants to try apple laptops.

I was a PC for all my life! Since the 80s and last year I bought a small used MacBook. It wasn't fast but it worked. This year I got a new camera and the old MacBook was chocking on the files so I went all out and got this. OMG! Incredibly fast!!! It boots up in 11 seconds and most of the time will shut down in 3 seconds. I click to start a program and its almost instant. Everything I do with it is so fast. It doesn't crash (EVER) and I use it for everything. The software for the Mac seems a lot cheaper than it was for the PC also. One last thing; when I first started it, it noticed I had had a network with my old Mac on it. It ask if I wanted to copy the settings from my old Mac or from a Time Machine Backup. I choose the Time Machine back up and after about thirty minutes every program with every registration code and password was copied to my new computer. This would take me days with my PC to reload all my software and find the codes etc... I'm a Mac now and I'm not looking back! Spend the extra money and get this. You will not regret it.

I am using my time to do a review, because my expectations were exceeded, meaning someone, somewhere, deserves positive feedback for that. Karma, what ever..... Thank You Apple, Thank You Amazon.

Bone-fides:

I've owned and used representative Macs of every generation from the beginning, and Apple IIe's, II GSs etc before that. The family has always had several Macs around the house any given time plus a couple off at college. I'm somewhat of an digital intelligence / awareness augmentation enthusiast and I publish virtual tourism products that must be widely compatible, so I own, like and use PC's alongside Macs, daily. Don't care!

Yes I own one: Because I was really good this year, I bought myself a 15" Retina Display, 16 gig, 512 ssd for Christmas from Amazon, and received the stellar "prime" service I am accustomed to.

Opinion:

I love the machine. The build quality, performance and display are remarkable. It replaced a much, much beloved 17" MacBookPro lost in a fire, so my satisfaction bar was set pretty high. I am delighted with the 15". If/when there is a 17" Retina Display model, I'll get one, but for me, now, the 15" Retina is it, an extreme value, considering the price point has not really changed on the highest end MacBookPros in a long time. I think I paid more for the loaded 17" a couple of years ago. This model is satisfying me in the same ways. Per normal with replacement Macs, it is now the fastest computer I own, besting the MacPro I'm using to write this and the display really is stunning.

The never ending, Apple led, Bus, Port and interface changes don't bother me, I'm numb. Heck, I still have SSCI stuff somewhere. For me, managing my local peripheral architecture changes and transitions is way better than being stuck with with the slow, buggy, large old stuff. What does kinda disappoint me is the locked down, non-upgradable nature of the beast. I used to delight in getting the fastest processor, but otherwise baseline versions of my Macs or PCs, and upgrading them. A nit really, because mine is outrageously equipped for a comparative song, and my needs are not likely to outgrow its capabilities any time soon. Wants, are another matter, but even there, the 15" Retina MacbookPro is is confirmed as my first choice amongst laptops that I might use to augment me.

Bottom line: Extreme value for my money, in that I got phenomenal computing power and advanced display technology packaged as a fine work of industrial art.

Update 1/9/13: I have the Samsung built display and it remains impressive. I'd buy this jewel again.

Dell XPS 15Z X15z-5834ELS 15.6-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)

Dell XPS 15Z X15z-5834ELS 15.6-Inch LaptopI purchased this Dell XPS 15z a few months ago and have had enough time using it to properly review it. When I heard that Dell was releasing a slim line of XPS laptops I was very excited. The Dell XPS line has always impressed me because they are performance systems at affordable prices. Combine those two elements with a slim line of laptops and you get one heck of a deal. For a while I contemplated purchasing a Macbook Pro 13" because of it's aesthetic appeal but was having a hard time justifying paying the $500 premium for the design and operating system. That all came to an end when Dell finally released the XPS 15z. The laptop is a Macbook pro clone, it looks very similar to the 15" model that apple offers. All of the usb and peripheral plugs are on the left side (except for power and Ethernet plugs), the battery indicator with little lights is also on this side like the mac. There is a slot loading dvd drive on the right side and the dimensions are basically the same.

The new XPS comes with the second generation sandy bridge processors from Intel, unfortunately they are only the dual core processors but they are still plenty powerful for most applications. In addition to these new processors the laptop comes with a GeForce GT525M with 1GB of video memory. So far this graphics card has been able to handle everything that I've thrown at it seamlessly. I'm not a PC gamer and I've read other reviews to suggest that this card would be able to play most modern game at medium settings. Which isn't bad for a laptop of this size. One of the nicest things about the laptop that I own is the full 1080p resolution of the screen. That option alone basically sold me on the machine, not very many laptops come with this option and have all the other goodies that this comes with. Like the USB 3.0, Mini DVI, New Processors, Fast RAM, Optimus Enabled GeForce Card.

I've also had a good experience with the battery life on my laptop. Using the dell power management settings I can get around 5-6 hours of time on the laptop watching movies online, surfing the web, listening to music and doing work. That is very similar to my friends Macbook Pro 13", the times that the companies post online about 8 hours battery time is nonsense. Unless you turn the brightness setting down to the lowest settings and use word or some low CPU intensive program with no sound you aren't going to get that kind of battery life stated on company websites. But nonetheless 5-6 hours is plenty for me.

Although I love the laptop and wouldn't trade it in for any other laptop, there are a few negatives I need to mention. The chrome trim around the base of the machine seems like more of an afterthought and doesn't really hold up very well. It's really just a plastic piece that is clipped in there. The panel surrounding the plugs on the left side is also a little flimsy, not that big of a deal but definitely not first class material. Also, as a computer guy I don't know why anyone would use the Dell Stage software. It really seems like a waste of RAM but that might be more of a taste thing, kind of like how I don't like anything on my desktop except for the My Computer and Trash icons.

All in all this laptop is great and I would give it a 4.5 stars if I could on here but since I can't I'm rounding up. If you can spend the extra hundred bucks I strongly recommend upgrading the screen and getting the full 1080p experience. That way when a mac fanboy tells you how much better his 15" laptop is just ask him what the resolution of his screen is :P, it definitely won't be 1080p. If you prefer Windows to Mac OS and want a slim line laptop get this, if you have the money and like Mac OS then go with the 15' Pro. Also, a 14" model of this is coming to market very soon! So if you wanted something even smaller wait for that, it will have all the same stuff except for the full 1080p screen.

Pros:

New Processor (2nd Gen Intel Core i processors).

Fast RAM, and plenty of it.

Beautiful resolution. (If you get the 1080p resolution, 720p is nice too)

Efficient graphics card with optimus technology that will get you better battery life.

Battery life is good.

Affordable for the high end specifications.

Multi Touch Trackpad (Works great for me)

Cons:

Build quality could be better. Chrome trimming is cheap.

No quad core processor option.

Not designed for hardcore gamers. (Regular XPS or Alienware line is for gamers)

Thank you for reading my review.

Cheers,

Hunter

I have used many Dell products at both home and work and I have always liked them. Very reliable with good set of features.

I like this 15Z but I have been disapointed in the lighted keyboard for following reasons...

1) Very shiny surface on keys but are hard to see unless you have very good ambient light or the keyboard is lit.

2) The user has few options to change the way the keyboard lights work. The stock Windows 7 allows the user to program the lights to your liking but Dell has locked the user out of that capability. By default, the lights are "dim" (aka...unreadable) when you power it up. You can change that to be brighter but it defaults back to dim if you power your laptop off. Even if you adjust the brightness, the keyboard will go off after a minute or so of unuse. The lights will come back on when you start typing again. That might be a reasonable strategy when on battery but mine is typically not on battery. I would prefer to (a) change the default brightness to high and (b) increase the time before the lighted keys turn off. That user option is not available with the way Dell has locked out the user.

Otherwise, I think this is a great laptop. I wanted to give it a 5 but I knocked off a star due to the inability of a user to make adjustments to the lighted keyboard.

Pros:

-Very well made.

-Great performance. I play BF3 on it on all high settings.

-Reminiscent of the Macbook pro design, right down to the backlit keyboard and mechanized DVD drive.

-Mini-displayport out. Works with iMac display port.

Cons:

-Network port will not sync @ gig speeds after standby. You need to pull the cable and reconnect. No big deal if you don't care about hardwire network.

-Screen is not 1080p only 1366x768.

Overall very pleased with purchase.

I got Dell XPS 15z for $800. The configuration is as follows:

Intel i5 processor

6 GB RAM

500 GB HDD @ 7500RPM

1GB GeForce graphics card.

I have used the laptop for almost a month now and the experience is excellent.

The design is very elegant and sleek. The display quality is very good. I have played a couple of high graphics games and they work without any problem.

The sound system, webcam, wireless, bluetooth etc work great. The battery life is about 2-3 hours with brightest display. Backlit keyboard is convenient for me to type and looks great.

I installed Linux (dual boot) on the machine and it was installed without slightest trouble. All the devices work equally well on Linux.

I use the laptop for programming, gaming and surfing. All of these work just fine.

On the downside, the laptop heats up very fast when playing high graphics games. It does not shut down or anything, but heat is too much to hold it on lap. Also, the scroll facility of touchpad does not work with the default windows7 installation which is annoying. Small size of the keyboard means you have to use 'Fn' key to do Home/End/Pg up/Pg down while typing.

Also, the price of the laptop shoots up higher than lennovo which has 8GB RAM and i7 processor.

Overall it is a great laptop, with great look and feel as well as performance. I am happy I got it.

This is a great computer. It had worked flawlessly for me for about a year now. It shreds games and the screen is beautiful. Keyboard could be better.

Thinkpad X220 12.5" 320GB 4G

Thinkpad X220 12.5' 320GB 4GThis is a review of the Lenovo x220 Core i7 with 128 Gb SSD (rather than 320 Gb hard drive) and bought directly from Lenovo. Came with 2 Gb RAM but I put in 8 Gb of Crucial RAM for $94. This little machine in this configuration is pricey but literally screams. Boots in 20 seconds; shuts down in 7 seconds; switches programs with iPAD2-like speed. Great keyboard for touch-typing, but Thinkpads always have the best keyboards IMO. The screen is extraordinarily bright. Weighs about 3 lbs. I've gotten b/w 6-7 hours on the battery with typical office use. Three USB ports (one hot) and HDMI/VGA. I use the x220 with Dragon Naturally Speaking, and it handles the software very well -the best of any laptop I've used with Dragon. My accuracy has improved, and digitized text pops on the screen quicker than any other machine I've used. This is my seventh Thinkpad, and I've had very good luck with all of them. I think Lenovo has a winner with the x220, especially with SSD. I doubt I'll ever buy another machine without SSD -so quiet and so fast. You might want to check out Lenovo's recently released e220s -same size as the x220 but runs about $500 cheaper than the x220, depending on your configuration. It's really hard to find anything not to like about the x220.

I am a longtime Lenovo notebook fan -I own an x100, 120E, T61, x200, and x201, and now an x220. The main reason I have stuck with the brand is the quality keyboards and Matte displays.

In terms of battery life and processor speed, this notebook is outstanding. However -the touchpad was completely redesigned for the x220 and Lenovo blew it here. If you are typing a document, you'll find that the cursor flies all over the screen as you type -even if you have the 'turn touchpad off while typing' option checked! It's highly annoying. The problem is that your hands are always resting on the touchpad if your fingers are on the keyboard. In previous designs, this was not the case.

The only workable solution for me is to completely disable the touchpad, which is stepping back to an earlier era. My x200 doesn't have a touchpad either, so I don't absolutely need to have one, but they're nice to have.

I agree with another reviewer here who identified this as a serious problem that reduces the usefulness of the notebook. My Dad also has he same issue -he just bought an x220 and needed to turn his completely off as well. People who do very little typing, who just view web-pages or watch movies, etc will probably not be affected. Those needing to do serious work will be.

Lenovo, you're doing a great job overall, but I hope you're listening! This is a serious problem that you'll need to fix in the next design cycle.

Thinkpad x220 Intel i5, 128 ssd, 8gb RAM, 9 cell battery, IPS screen

This is my 4th thinkpad x-series notebook. In the last 12 years I've had x-20, x-31, x-61. Then swithced to the sexy Macbook Air, then back to the Thinkpad x-series x220. This is by far the bestest laptop I've ever had.

Macbook Air is sure sexy and can run windows, but a real PC makes me feel more at home. Boot time of the x220 is about equal to the ssd Macbook Air (17 seconds). response is lighting fast and crisp. The Macbook Air with 4gb Ram (non-upgradable) running windows alongside Mac OSX would give me long delays with the beachball of death. The x-220 response is instantenuous.

Even the famed Thinkpad keyboard (best in the business for touch typing) feels crisper than previous Thinkpad models.

The screen is equal or better than the Macbook Air. This IPS screen is a huge leap for Thinkpads. My former models had a dim screen. If you buy this computer, insist on an IPS screen and not the ordinary screen.

Battery life is great. I think I should have gotten the 6 cell battery instead of the 9 cell I got. It would make the laptop even lighter and better looking without the extra protrusion in the back.

The 128 GB ssd is a bit small for me. I could have bought a model with 160 GB ssd but it would still be a bit tight. So I bought an OCZ msata 120 GB ssd card from Amazon for $165 and installed it in the slot under the palmrest (instructions on how to do it yourself are here: . (Alternately, his slot can be also used for a mobile broadband card). Now I have an adequate space of 248 GB. I moved the location of all my documents, videos, etc. from the original ssd to the msata ssd (right click on the folder, > properties > Location, type the path to the new location and click "move". Done. All the moved folders continue to appear in the explorer as if they've never been moved. Transparent integration.

The machine runs much cooler than my previous models. No problem putting it on my lap.

I read people complaining about the touchpad. Since I've grown used to the red trackpoint, and could never stand touchpads anyway, I disabled it in the "mouse" control panel. My previous models didn't have a touchpad.

The Intel i5 model has 3 usb 2.0 slots but not one USB 3.0 like the i7 has. The i5 processor is so fast, I don't feel the need for an i7 at all. But I bought a pci-express card with dual USB 3.0 slots to be inserted into the PCI express slot so I have a total of 5 USB slots.

Too many good things to list... bright screen, fantastic keyboard even though small with my big fingers, lightweight, huge battery life...

Turn off wifi with the exterior switch and I get 5+ hours on this on cross-country flights, working away with the screen on full bright.

I somehow missed that it would come with the docking station and optical drive, which is just what I wanted but had decided to delay purchasing... that puts it at just the right angle on my desk... and the only place I need cdrom / dvdrom.

The ergo is great, and I have to admit that Win7 has it right, perhaps even over my life-long Mac admiration. What a great, fantastic product. Kudos Lenovo!

Want Thinkpad X220 12.5" 320GB 4G Discount?

I purchased the X220 to replace an aging Dell M1210. I was drawn to the X220 because of it's Premium HD IPS display option and it's battery life. Well I got those features and they are great. The battery life with the optional 9 Cell is incredible, exceeding 10 hours. What I did not expect was the infuriating Touch Pad. Why did they not sort this out before going live. I'm having to learn all over again after growing to really like the Pad on my Dell. The Lenovo pointer jumps and bounces around like it's possessed. At the moment it's almost unusable. The left button press often yields no action or gives the pop down menu that you would expect from the right button.

My final gripe is that I'm not sure I dig the wide screen format. For business use I'm not convinced it is the best option. I may regret this purchase over the long haul, thinking that I should have instead purchased an HP or Dell.

Update: Ok it's been about three months of torment now with the Touchpad and my opinion still stands. For those of you who are conflicted about the usefulness or merits of a Touchpad let me elaborate. The X220 has both a Track Pointer and Touchpad. The Touchpad is a new design that combines the Left and Right mouse buttons into the Touchpad as integral single unit. The difficulty is that the Touchpad often seems confused as to whether you are pushing a button or simply trying to move the cursor about the screen. For those of us used to two handing the Touchpad it will be especially frustrating. As you attempt to scroll with your right hand fingers and control the buttons with your left, the cursor will wander in confusion. It's always amusing to watch a colleague take control of my computer during a presentation only to recoil from the behavior of the Touchpad. The response is usually something to the effect of "Wow what's up with that?"

Also the durability of the trim around the LCD is poor. The top left corner of my panel trim has already failed. I have not imposed any undue abuse that would justify this. This is my first Lenovo and maybe my last.

Update two: I've installed an OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SSD and an addtional 4GB of Memory(now 8GB). The OCZ SSD was troublesome initially but has improved with Firmware updates and a switch away from the Intel Drivers to the native Microsoft Drivers. The SSD has really transformed the Laptop, incredible, I'm now contemplating one for my Desktop since it is now a dog by comparison. Photoshop for example opens almost instantaneously. Finally in addition to the top left corner of the LCD bezel failing, so has the front left corner of the keyboard/palm bezel. Also for all of those Lenovo Keyboard fans out there, you should really try a decent Dell, then maybe you will know what a good keyboard feels like.

HP - Pavilion DV6-6B27NR - Intel Quad Core i7-2670QM 2.2GHz - 8GB RAM - 750GB HDD - Blu-Ray - 15.6-inchWhen I found out I could buy this for $700 I questioned why this listing even existed. So why does this exist?!?!?!?!?

WHY?!?!?!

I've had a lot of laptops, and this have never happens to me. When it was one month old it just stopped working, it did nothing!, I contacted the seller and they told there was nothing to do, but to all HP because the return time was up, I called and they told me: "It is not software but hardware, and I although I had an international warranty, there wasn't the pieces in my country so there was nothing to do until I return to the US (because it was a new product)". All this money for these, it was suppose to be one of the best laptops!!. I had a Dell and when I needed the international warranty, they were in my house in three days. Don't buy HP products if you are going to travel. This is the worst experience ever with a customer service and with a laptop.
