Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The two previous reviewers have given outstanding reviews on all the techie specs of this HP Envy Laptop. As such, I fear my average-plain-jane-user review is going to pale in comparison but hopefully it'll be helpful to those like me who use laptops but don't get into the nitty-gritty of the electronic.

Ok, so here goes -

I've always like the style and sleekness of HP laptops so it's no surprise that I love this one as well. It's beautifully designed with a smooth black surface that's fingerprint resistant which I love with children in the house!

Relatively lightweight, although still a bit hefty if compared to the ultrabooks or the like.

The colors exhibited in this model are just OUTSTANDING! So bright, crisp, and clear. Absolutely fan-flippin'-tastic for photos, videos, and graphics. Even Skype is more vivid with this laptop!

But then comes the Windows 8...

Allow me to confess right up front that I am not a fan of change, especially if something is working just fine, so I will be a bit jaded in this area. But, in my opinion, Windows 8 is basically a laptop with apps. While I love apps, ON MY PHONE or IPAD, I care nada for them on my computer. Not yet anyway. I spent hours trying to familiarize myself with the app system here and came to the conclusion that I do not like Windows 8. Give me my regular old windows button in the lower left screen that pops up all my programs by name and I'm happy. Hunting for them under an "organized" app system, no way!

In all fairness, however, my 20 year-old college son, thinks it's awesome. He says he loves the apps and thinks it organizes and simplifies things for users. So, maybe I'm just that old dog that can't learn new tricks. :)

If this computer had come with Windows 7, I would have given 5 stars easily. The laptop itself is FABULOUS! But the Windows 8 just wasn't for me.

This laptop arrived extremely fast which was great and it didn't take long to get up and running. There are some features I lovethe finger print reader is one of them, I appreciate the added security and it's easier than typing in a password. And the computer itself seems to be greatit's everything we were looking for. However, at this point I am completely unhappy with it and I think I have to blame Windows. Even in the desk top mode I struggle to find anything I need, then when I find it I have trouble using the program and often times can't even minimize or escape out of what I'm in. I think this software would be great if I were using it on a tablet, but I'm not and don't want to feel like I am, I have a tablet and iPhone for thatthis is supposed to be my computer and I want it to run like one. I'm trying hard to get used to it and learn it, but I'm frustrated now. I'll update my review if any progress is made, positive or negative, but since I find myself avoid this laptop we might be at a standstill.

However, if you're familiar and comfortable with this software I really think the laptop itself is solid. It looks great and has more bells and whistles than I need (if I could only use them!)

This is a great computer for business just because of one feature alone, the finger print reader. I like this alot, you can have it "read" any one of your 10 fingers. I suggest at least two, one on each hand in case you can't use one of the hands.

That said this is a nice laptop. The keys are easy to press and quiet. Mine luckily came with Windows 7, I had reviewed Windows 8 (W8) at a large retailer with the initials B.B. I was not impressed with W8. W8 is meant for tablets, if you aren't using a tablet or a touch screen then it's a pointless O.S. It can revert to the old W7 mode.

Right out of the box this computer looked for my Home Network Wi-Fi. Found it and set up to use it.

I own a number of laptops, I replace them fairly quickly because I don't like them for whatever reason. This one I got for business, I was unaware it contained a finger print reader for added security which is a definate plus. I got it for a new business I am starting and wanted a laptop different than the others I have. This is my second HP Laptop. I definately remind you to make a rescue/recovery CD a soon as you get it.

The sound by BEATS Audio is suberb for a laptop and of the 10 others I have this beats them all hands down. It even sounds better on the same Sharper Image headphones I was using on my Sony vaio.

Ok, first off, I want to say that upon receiving the package, this laptop is extraordinarily light. When I opened up the package, I was holding a very, very elegant looking machine. It is beautiful; the brush midnight finish is one of the few laptop design cover that isn't a finger print magnet; it is awesome. So, now, lets get down to review:

The dv6 is a mediocre looking machine for specs on paper; don't let that fool you.This is a capable gaming laptop. This game runs COD4 on midsettings at 50 FPS, which is really nice, and plays Planetside 2 in midsettings at 45 FPS.

I removed a couple bloat (Such as Norton and some weird game program), and freed up startups and services on the msconfiguration via run command, and it is running very smoothly. The fingerprint scanner works flawlessly; I scanned all ten fingers and it works 18 out of 20 trials. Very nice piece of security. The screen is not bad, but I do kind of wished they had it up to like 1600 x 900 like the spec identical HP Envy dv7-7230us. The Beats audio is not bad, though I was disappointed at how quiet it is. At max volume, my phone (Droid Razr Maxx) is still louder, but the quality is fine. Now, as for Windows 8: I honestly have no idea why it is criticized so much. It is not so bad; just give 5 minutes to learn. That's all; as a matter of fact, Windows 8 is more like Windows 7.75; You can still access the original Windows 7 desktop by going to the "Desktop" tile/icon on the metro app starting screen. And if you need to access the settings, control panel, power, etc., then all you need to do point the mouse to the upper or lower right corner of the screen, and it will give you those options. I believe the reason why Windows 8 is so heavily criticized is because many, many people don't realize this, and chose to run choppy emulators online. I honestly love this laptop; if you are on a budget of less than $600, than this is a MUST buy! While there are more expensive relatives to this, this is actually pretty great for the money. WOW! is what I kept saying after I took it out of the box and began getting to know this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop up close and personal. Before even turning it on, anyone would notice how lightweight and gorgeous it is. The finish is brushed aluminum in Midnight Black and it is absolutely perfect as it looks great and feels sensual to my touch. All the hardware is placed perfectly for maximum enjoyment and ease of use. The next feature I am most impressed with is the LED screen which has amazing depth to it. I love viewing photos and videos as they look even better on this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop than on my HDTV! This in itself is amazing as my 52" HDTV is always commented on by the different cable carriers of how my tv makes their feed look the BEST they have ever seen! Well this laptop adds even more depth and crispness to the photos and videos than that with its AMD Radeon HD 7640G Discrete-Class graphics and up to 3053MB total graphics memory! Amazing! This laptop has Beats Audio with the speakers the length of the laptop on both sides of the hinge and sound very good for any portable electronic device. Underneath the speaker screens is Beats Audio quad speakers and a subwoofer. Webcam also delivers a great video chat experience. The touchpad as well feels great to touch and use and includes the normal mouse moves including double tap, 2finger scroll, pinch or stretch to zoom, top-edge swipe to display app commands, right-edge swipe to display the charms (search, share, start, devices, and settings) and left edge swipe to switch between open apps. You can quickly return to the start screen by pressing the windows logo key on the keyboard.

HP SimplePass is a plus for me and I believe the scanner on this HP Envy dv6-7210us 15.6-Inch Laptop is more durable than previous models I have owned. I set up this laptop so that when I scan my right index finger, it launches my favorite website which is Amazon! I like that I can use my fingerprints as my passwords which I believe makes my laptop more secure from prying eyes and stealing hands and just makes access easier and faster for me.

This is my first introduction to Windows 8 and of course there is a learning curve but so far I like it. I like that it is linked to my Microsoft account which means that every time I sign into a Windows 8 device, my settings and custom tweaks will come with me and be applied. Because Microsoft accounts are linked to SkyDrive storage, Office 2013 will back up automatically uploading to the cloud. Windows Media Center will not be included for free in Windows 8 but right now through January 31, 2013, you can request a free product key for it at the microsoft windows website.

I really only use my laptop for my writing assignments and to check email...This laptop is perfect for that. Some back story that would be helpful: This is the 3rd laptop I have purchased in my endeavor to find a replacement for my Toshiba Satellite which has lasted over 5 years. I bought and RETURNED another entry-level Satellite as well as a Gateway; long story short, they weren't better than this Lenovo.

As far as typing goes, it was/is bit of a transition to switch from a basic laptop keypad to one with the numeric keypad at the right something I've never had in a laptop. The good news is that my hand & finger placement on this laptop do not "feel" shifted to the left like they do on the Toshiba Satellite. And there is plenty of space for my large fingers.

2.2 GHz processor and 4 GB of ram is all I need for what I do. I don't "game" or do any heavy graphics editing on this laptop. The boot up is quick and applications start very quickly. I have noticed on the Toshiba that when I listened to music and opened other applications that the music would "stutter" or pause while the processor caught up with the application. That was NOT the case with this Lenovo and multi-tasking is effortless here.

As I stated above, I also like to listen to music when I work which can be a trial on most entry level laptops. The speakers on this Lenovo are really good way better than the Toshiba (sounded like cell phone speakers) and is as good or better than the Gateway. Remember, this is a basic laptop so you won't be able to jam out with big bass.

One thing that bugs me about this Lenovo: when you flip up the screen and push it all the way back, the left hinge makes this "clicking" sound. The sound repeats when you wiggle the screen back & forth at this point. I'm believe it's the "build" of the laptop and not a mechanical fault as I noticed it on the floor model. I can live with it, personally. I've never noticed anything like it on other laptops, but when you're buying in this price range, you have to take the bad with the good.

Overall, if this laptop will be for you, it will suit your needs if you'll be only doing the basic administrative type tasks. If you're purchasing this for a "gamer," it won't be powerful enough.

The laptop arrived very quickly and in good shape. It was packaged in the original Lenovo box with a Lenovo seal. We have been using it for a while and have had no problems. It was a replacement for my wife's old hp laptop, and she has been very satisfied with its performance.

Ok, I know you have read time and again about making "the Switch" to which most just shake their heads. Me I'm sold! I got the ibook over the powerbook due to the fact that 1) I am not a graphic designer, 2) the battery life, 3) the price, and 4) I didn't like squinting at the 12" screen. The battery life on the 14" is awesome! It is pretty true to the advertising of 6 hrs, even if you are running airport extreem and playing itoons as you surf the web as I am right now. The battery life dipps a little when you are watching DVDs, or playing a game, but then again that's because you are crunching some serious graphical goodness due to the ati card. Over all, I say it's a great buy for the money! I will recommend to everyone to max out the ram though, a must with OSX. If you are looking for a great laptop that just works and runs forever GET THIS ibook.

Although Apple markets this laptop as though it's an entry level laptop for casual users, I can tell you that from my experience it's plenty powerful enough for the road warrior as well. Unless you have money to burn or some very good reason to go for the Powerbook, I suggest you save $1,000 and buy the iBook. The only downside to ordering from Amazon is that you can't get one with the internal Bluetooth module. This was an issue for me because I have a Bluetooth enabled phone and mouse, so I ordered direct from Apple.

The 1 GHz processor and maximum RAM provide lightening fast boot-up and application loading. Add the Airport Extreme card and you can surf the web from hotspots all over the country.

I've been using and defending PCs for a long, long time! Ever since I got in front of a computer (about 20 years ago), all I've worked with were PCs. And I stubbornly kept defending PCs and disregarding Macs as thought they were inferior. As of late, however, I've been using UNIX quite a bit and knowing the strengths of all *IX OS's I knew I wanted a *IX compatible laptop. Well, alas! Apple came with Panther and I was sold! I bought this laptop through my university's Apple store and got it "souped-up" and I tell you with confidence that this is the *best* laptop I've ever owned! The weight is lower than most competitors' comparable laptops. The power of Panther is outstanding. I feel confident recommending this laptop to anyone without any reservations. Apple is giving consumers, for the first time, a TRUE alternative to MS Windows' hegemony. Some of you who have been around computers might read the title of this post and giggle for that is what people were saying back in the mid-80s and never became a reality (at least not for the consumer as evidenced by the market share apple holds). But I think with this laptop and Panther Apple has made a believer out of me. Very solid, good-lloking, powerful laptop.

Acer Aspire AS7741-5731 17.3" 3GB 250GB Laptop Black

This is my first personal laptop and so far it has been a great purchase. I am a gamer that also does a lot of professional audio/video recording and editing and this laptop has been able to handle everything so far without any big problems. I am still looking for a usb interface for my audio inputs and outputs (Im used to a pci card interface for my board), but thats a whole nother beast. I am able to get 48-60 fps when playing 3d games and the wireless adapter has very little latency (around 200ms, which is ok in my experience compared to other wireless setups I have used). The range of the adapter is impressive, I can get a signal much further than my wife's toshiba. Battery life is a little over 3 hours in my experience when using the web and much less when playing games. Screen size is excellent and is true 16:9 aspect ratio, which suits my hd editing perfectly. picture quality is also very good. I have watched many dvd's while staying in hotels on this unit. In my 2+ months of owning it I have had only one problem that seems to have gone away. Initially, the video driver was hanging up, causing my screen to blank out for a few seconds during 3d gameplay, but windows was able to recover quickly every time and resume play without losing anything. This has not happened in the past few weeks. Windows reported it as a driver failure and I think the driver has been updated to fix the problem. I paid a little less than the stated price of $498 at walmart for this computer and could not be happier. Goodbye desktop! My mother was impressed with the machine and bought one soon after I did with the same results, very satisfied. One word of advice in closing, make sure the unit has enough space for proper airflow during 3d acceleration, it gets warm when 3d is used due to the video being on chip.

Picked this up at Walmart for $398 the price tag on it was $498 it must have been a roll back or something. I really didn't need a computer at all however for $398 I just couldn't turn it down. I prefer macs but I have picked up a couple HP's for the same price as this with 4gb of ram,but a 15.6'' screen at a black friday sale.I mean with kids and school work and that rare occasion were you need a PC I refuse to pay over $500 bucks for a PC. No Way!!! I've burned through to many PC's to justify spending more.were as I still have the same mac running strong not one problem also fast and reliable.I also don't want to put windows on my mac forget that noise.

If your looking for speed then don't buy this PC.I use it for Internet,pictures,word processing,and ripping music.Lets face it. This is not a work horse by any means however it works fine for my family's needs. The screen is a nice backlit LED, very bright and sharp. Very nice looking and the keys are flat which I like alot. Most impotantly it is pretty damn lightweight and slim for the size of it. The Cd/DvD drive opens better than any laptop I've owned and is also pretty responsive . The outer top finish is almost like a rubber/plastic and not a fingerprint magnet like my HP's are. I am constantly cleaning finger prints off those HP shiny black glossy outer back shell. The last thing I'd like to add is it is very sharp looking with a nice trackpad. Great buy!!! Walmart must have just recently marked these down so good luck. I have a feeling they will go fast!

Buy Acer Aspire AS7741-5731 17.3" 3GB 250GB Laptop Black Now

Ive used Acers for many years since i got my first gigantic tower back in 1997 with a tower and printer for over 2200$!! Big money back then. That computer was put through the fire, moving several times, and actually after getting a laptop i put it out in a room to set, and the side was exposed(open). Cat hair, dampness, dust, static, you name it, it got inside it. I brought it back in after about 4 months and said hey why not try it, boom it started right up after a little spray down, and i was shocked, over 7 years of use. Finally the power supply went bad, due to a bad recepticle i think. So i gutted it, through in some new stuff, sold it on ebay for 550$ in 2004 for another tower. The one after lasted till 2009, and i still know who has it, and uses it all the time. So that should tell you how reliable these things are. Now you will hear stories of how the Laptops run into more problems, depending on which one you get. But there are so many 1000's of these things made all the time your gonna run into issues, not matter WHAT kind you get. Also these aren't desktops which are made for more punishment.

This version i am using now, is the same but just with the P6100 Pentium dual-core, 4 gigs of RAM, and a 500gig hard drive which i got at staples for 499$, yes thats not a typo either. The price has went back up by now i'm sure. This thing is just stellar, i already own my 3rd Acer Desktop which i made into a killer gaming rig so i stick with what i know, and what lasts. The screen on this thing is absolutely amazing, no really it has to be THE brightest screen i've ever came across on any laptop. And i've tried many. Also on that note you get 1600x900 resolution on this baby for that price as well, beat that? I dare you to even try. The speakers are very loud and clear, with dolby surround which usually isn't so great, but in this case very good. Its not a speed demon like the I series, but as i said i already have a gaming rig for all the rest i need to do. Its no slouch though, most movies ranging from 700mb to 1.00gb average around 34 to 45 minutes for coversion which isn't bad at all. Using a program like DIVX to DVD runs like a charm and you have DVD ready VSO movies in no time.

The keys are very close to the body of the computer and very touch sensitive, which i like a lot, but it can make you more prone to mistakes if you type as fast as i do. Also the computer comes with 3mb of L3 cache, which also helps give it a boost in processing speed. So for the price your getting much more than you will with much more expensive brands. Especially for a 17.3 in screen. The web cam is great, none are out of this world, but it does what it does, and does it well. The laptop is very thin, even though its large and only weighs around 7.5lbs. So its very easy to tout around with you. The mouse pad is the only thing that can be a little figity at times, but just use it with extra caution, especially when typing. It doesnt run hot in the least, highest temperature i've seen on it using speed fan is around 45C. Even under heavy work load. Wireless is great and pics up a great signal no matter where you are with the new Acer Nplify boost.

There is a walmart version of this computer and its ok if you don't want a lot of space and a little decrease in performance, only 3 gigs which isn't bad, and only a 250gig HD which is not so good. So check out Staples and see if they still sell these at this price, it may not last long. The scores for Windows are as follows btw. Also this version review on here with the 3 gigs, and the older 1.86ghz, i would steer clear off unless you just wanna browse, if so its fine, plus the screen doesnt look nearly as good. I have a friend with one. So here are the Windows specs.

So for what it is you can't beat it, i've seen Sony Vaios that don't even rate that high for 699 or more. So get one of these(the staples or walmart brand that is) with the P6100, you'll be glad for the extra performance. I know i am, love it.

The screen is big and bright and is a nice looking unit. Basically I like just about everything about this thing except it is damn slow most the time. Everything is updated, virus free but it has been slow right out of the box with all the updates. I wouldnt buy another one.

Had this laptop for two weeks, bought it from walmart. After the two weeks the only program I put on it was bitdefender antivirus and system mechanic, shortly after it crashed. Rebooted everything and removed all the non oem clutter, which is mostly useless stuff anyway. The ram seemed to cut in half by itself and the hard drive cut its speed in half. Needless to say I got rid of windows because aero is too over bearing on this thing, and installed ubuntu 11.4, still having the lag from the hdd but the ram is back to normal. I would not recommend this to anyone, do not buy! I went to acer's website and you have to see if your eligible for free tech advice, otherwise you have to pay the site for the questions because their product absolutely blows. DO NOT BUY!!!!!!!!!!!

Nokia does the dumbest things, no doubt it gets screwed. It is the Rolls Royce of Netbooks. Great Industrial design, Very Sturdy, Beautiful looks, Great sound and Amazing Display. That's it, NOTHING POSITIVE any more.

NEGATIVES:

1) You have Windows starter 7 + 1 Gb (FIXED RAM on Board. You cannot expand it). How in the world this configuration works. Windows 7 requires minimum 2 Gb RAM. Else Load it with XP. This makes this netbook DEAD slow when multiple applications running.

2) When tried to load XP, extra hardware features this Netbook has FAILS. GPS doesn't works. Not sure abt 3G nor hard disk protection software.

3) When you spend almost 500$ on Netbook, you have a GPS just tells where u are located. It can't route NOR give directions. You got to TWEAK and struggle to make it running. Why in the world anybody require a GPS JUST to tell you where u are located. Crazy thought. No GPS drivers for XP and it fails to work when you downgrade to XP from Win7

I purchased this pretty one about a week ago,when NOKIA publish its Booklet 3G I had been highly attracted.But till this year this time then I decide to have it.

Pretty design,like a mini Mac pro,but compare to the speed...I'd rather to say who made this stupid choice to let it run WIN7?

I used to decide change it into Ubuntu,but I found I can't use MS Office(Word Excel)which I should have in daliy works in that Linux system from others' experience.

BTW,I can't upgrade the memory into 2G because it is a integrated part of the main board.

Anyway...it's just a netbook...i notice the price drop down to 393$ but acctually when I buy it the price is 409$,amazon should pay me back of that discount deduction :P

What a bargain -almost impossible to believe. MSRP on Google sites showed costs anywhere from $379, all the way up to nearly $600. I paid $309, with free shipping and no tax (thank you, Amazon!!). I bought this laptop to replace my Toshiba, which was heading toward an imminent hard-drive crash. I have owned numerous laptops and PCs, but this is my first Lenovo. I knew it was essentially a new generation of IBM products, so I faith that I would like it. It arrived promptly to my P. O. Box here in Hawaii (the vendor, Lei Gu, was amazingly fast, and deserves a hearty recognition), and was easy to use, right out of the box. There are many things I love about this computer, but perhaps one of my favorites is the keyboard: the letters/numbers pads are slightly raised (far more than on most laptops I have used), and, since I have long fingers, this particular component makes it far easier for me to type, and to preclude hitting incorrect keys. At $309, it was simply a steal; in my opinion, probably worth nearly twice that cost. This is unquestionably the best laptop I have ever owned, and I am an instantaneous fan of Lenovo. Amazon rocks (as always).

This vendor has increased the price to 382 bucks. It's still one of the best deals out there at this time.

I bought 2 of these for my twins. One works perfectly. The other has a bad wifi adapter. I know this because I was able to swap to the adapter from the other "known good" laptop. In trying to fix the 2nd laptop the hard drive failed, so I sent the laptop back to Amazon.

I can't replace it at anywhere near its original cost.

Since this vendor has increased this laptop's price by 50 bucks in a single day, I bought a Lenovo B560 model (from another vendor) with a faster processor for the same higher cost, 380 bucks. It looks nearly identical since it's just a different model. The Lenovo 43302AU B560 has an Intel i3-380M processor instead of a B970 processor in this Lenovo G570 4334EGU. The Lenovo 43302AU B560 has flatter keys which I don't like quite as much, but its keyboard works fine.

Guess what ? THE Lenovo model B560 43302AU laptop ALSO HAS THE IDENTICAL BROKEN WIFI ADAPTER !

I contacted Lenovo directly and they will send me a free-shipping-back-to-Lenovo box to replace the wifi adapter. I refused to give them an 80 dollar loan just to be able to have them send me a new adapter so I wouldn't have to send the bad adapter back to them first. Remember that it's their problem to begin with, so I won't pay anything to get it fixed under warranty.

Note: I ordered an Intel WIFI adapter anyway (Intel 6200 IEEE 802.11n (draft) Wi-Fi Adapter Mini PCI Express 300Mbps) from 3Bay for a whole 13 bucks and it arrived 5 days later. I substituted it and this newer Lenovo B560 now has working WIFI. I did this because I've read several reviews very critical of Lenovo's Customer Support. It looks like they were right.

??? Just how long does it take Lenovo to ship to me an empty shipping box so I can send back the broken-from-the-factory WIFI adapter ??? Both "mini PCI-E" adapter cards are about 1 inch by 1.25 inches by 3/16 inches incredibly tiny !

Pros:

-) The incredibly low 335 buck cost [Edit: Not any more ! It's now 382 buck as of 2012-11-26 ]. The price keeps bouncing randomly anywhere between $350 and $380, most times at the higher end.

-) Only a few crapware programs for a low cost laptop : The "Lenovo" games written by some other company, the MS Office trial that you pay big bucks later on to keep using it and the ooVoo (?), a Skype look-alike, but you pay for it. And finally, the biggest piece-of-garbage antivirus: Norton. (Use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and is much better all around. Google it It's available directly from Microsoft. Did I mention Security Essentials is free ?)

-) Great looking screen, though it has a very glossy finish. The screen has a very narrow vertical viewing angle range, but it;s entirely acceptable.

-) A trackpad with no glitches and a keyboard that works well. I really like the raised keys.

-) Didn't have to pay extra $ for a larger hard drive whose extra storage will never be used.

-) 4 (four !) USB ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port. The Lenovo B560 model has 4 USB ports, too. Must be a Lenovo thing because most other cheaper laptops have only 2 or 3, never 4.

-) Good overall stiffness of the case and solid hinges with just enough friction to keep it fixed at the same screen viewing angle when the laptop is moved around.

-) Two RAM slots, not just one. Only one was occupied by a 4GB DDR3-1333 SO-DIMM module rather than two slots with 2GB modules. System max RAM is 8GB. Another 4GB module costs only 18 bucks at NevvEgg.

Cons:

-) The One-Touch restore disc creation program has an annoying bug that requires you to repeatedly press the Start button 40 times to actually start burning the initial disc. No kidding ! This happened on both the 2 different Lenovo laptop models. They have the same faulty backup utility.

-) A replacement battery costs around 65 bucks, which seems to be twice the amount I expect for a typical 6-cell unit. Maybe the usual 3rd-party battery vendors haven't come online. But, maybe they never will.

Observations:

Even though the Intel B970 processor is supposed to have only about 80% of the processing power of the third generation Intel i3 2.1GHz processor, it actually seems faster than my Toshiba with the Intel i3. Maybe this B970 processor is better matched to the video graphics.

I think this wifi adapter problem has been a marketing disaster for the Lenovo 'G' and 'B' series of laptops, so they are being sold off cheaply. BE PREPARED TO REPLACE THE WIFI ADAPTER ON YOUR OWN (with a compatible Intel model). I bought a brand new Intel 6250 622ANXHMW adapter on e3ay. It's very easy to install this when you have a small Phillips screwdriver. This is far less hassle than returning the entire laptop, especially when Amazon won't replace it. Lenovo will replace it under warranty, but you'll probably end up with another bad wifi adapter and you'll be out of a laptop for 6 to 10 weeks.

This is a great laptop once the wifi adapter is working.

It seems ideal for the 95% of all the laptop users who do only email, web browsing, word processing and light gaming. The G570 4334EGU is definitely *not* a toy and runs Windows 7, not the new "eye candy" Windows 8 version designed for all the idiot kiddies.

NevvEgg is selling this model laptop for 100 bucks more than this vendor. Be careful comparing Lenovo models. There are multiple G570 models and B560 models which differ mostly by the processor which determines the overall speed.

Here's Lenovo's own "whitelist" of compatible wifi adapters: Intel 625DNX, Intel625DGx, Intel 515DAG-WX, Intel 6200N, Intel 1000N, Gtc BCM4313, Qualcomm AR9285 HB95 BGN, Liteon AR9285 HB95 BGN. Personally, I would only use an Intel adapter. The laptop came with the Qualcomm Wi-Fi adapter which I later found out is notorious for its incredibly high failure rate. What was Lenovo thinking ??? They are *supposed* to know better.

For the money this is a basic budget laptop, but it does everything you'd need a basic laptop to do, It's quick and light. It also has a numbers pad, which is rare on a laptop but very very useful if you work with numbers a lot.

Time will tell how this holds up as it hasn't been in use for more than 2 months, but at this point very impressed with it.

I bought this laptop because it was almost identical to my Toshiba P745 (which I had purchased nearly 6 months before) for my sister for her birthday. Laptop runs great, the only thing I have to complain about, and this is more than likely a firmware/software issue, is that her windows OS reset itself and she lost all of her saved files. The computer had reboot into some sort of recovery mode I assume and we had to set up the computer again just as if we had just bought a new laptop. Other than that we haven't have any issues with it. Shipping was also very fast, I was hoping to get this before Christmas and luckily I received a few weeks before.

Sony VAIO PCG-FXA47 Notebook (1-GHz Athlon, 256 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive)

If you are serious about buying a laptop and you want quality for a good price, then this is the laptop for you. I find the Sony FXA47 to be an excellent laptop from the start. The Sony software included is handy. I bought the 48-Mo. warranty extension from Circuit City, so I don't feel any need to be concerned. Most importantly, the battery lasts the full three hours as promised in the manual. This is good for travel, even though it is heavy. I find that the included weight saver makes no sense if it only saves you 0.4 lbs. Performance on this laptop was a little slow when I first started using it, but after a few days of use it seems to speed up in performance. The DVD/CD-RW is a bit noisy and makes the laptop shake, so that might not be a convenience for business travelers on planes. Overall, a good laptop, w/a few glitches here and there. Definitely good for home/office users, but travelers might certainly want to look at something else less heavy and w/o a noisy cd player.

The Sony VAIO PCG-FXA47 offers a great combination of features, rubber-to-the-road performance and affordability for the home user who wants the freedom of a laptop. The DVD/CD-RW drive drew me in, and the fast processor and generous memory sold me. The 20GB hard drive should be plenty for almost everyone (documents/photos/Quicken), although a user editing digital movies might have to think twice. This laptop comes with 10/100 NIC, so DSL connectivity is a snap. The software shipped with mine was also very useful. Note that it comes with serial & parallel ports as well as 2 USB ports, so connection to your peripherals is also convenient. The price is very good considering all you get. All in all, a good deal!

The FXA47 is a sleek machine and when it works, it is wonderful.

I run a number of machines with XP and all perform better than this laptop, especially my Dell laptop.

The FXA47 hangs repeatedly when using standard programs such as the microsoft office family. Frequent crashing makes the computer nearly useless.

This is my second FXA47; the first was replaced due to these same problems to no avail. Beware!

I am so pleased with this laptop. The i5 processor is speedy, and the computer is beautifully made..solid and not flimsy feeling but lightweight as well. I was a little worried about its graphics abilities, because it does not have a separate graphics card, but there is a good menu for adjustments of the visuals and that works well for me.

I like HP business computers in general; they come stripped of the garbage you find on the screen of most home laptops and have a remarkable service process standing behind them. Lenovo S405 14.0-Inch Laptop (Silver Grey)

Please let me add another perspective if I may. I set up a dual boot with W8 and Ubuntu 12.10, and this was my experience:

PRO: Keyboard is excellent for typing relative to other laptops.

Build quality is good, not dazzling.

It has horsepower. The price/performance ratio is superb.

It's quiet and light.

W8 is quick and responsive, 'a nice fit with the laptop.

CON: Battery life is under three hours.

********UBUNTU Installation:********

1. Beginner level One can easily replace W8 with Ubuntu doing a USB install. Everything except the screen brightness control works right out of the box.

2. Intermediate level You can do a standard dual boot install but will have to change back and forth between W8 and Ubuntu each time by going to the BIOS and selecting the respective boot loaders. Google to find how to add a line that will let you adjust the brightness.

3. Advanced level To completely solve the brightness issue, upgrade to the Linux 3.7 kernel. (It takes 5 minutes, 'simple instructions using a script. Google it for instructions.) You can also get the dual boot to work well by working with grub a little.

Bottom line: this is a relatively powerful product at a very good price. W8 and Ubuntu both work well on it. Don't expect an ultrabook and do expect to play with it a little to set it up like you want.

'Enjoy.

Structural build quality: Poor. The design of the system is quite portable; its as thin as most other ultrabooks, and feels like the perfect size for a 14" laptop. However, it lacks the structural integrity of more expensive ultrabooks. The entire body is very poor quality plastic, not comparable to even the lowest-end Thinkpads like the x120. The hinges scare me quite a bit; it has a good opening and closing action, but they just don't feel secure.

IO: Good. The keyboard is very nice, easily the best feature of the product. Full size and great key placement (I compare this to the x120, which switches the position of the CTRL and FN keys; not good). One minor key on mine tends to stick down every once in a while. The mousepad is okay. Its very spacious, but lacks distinct physical buttons, instead opting for the full pad clicking action found on other models. The selection of ports is great; the addition of an ethernet port is a very welcome addition considering how few ultrabooks have one these days. The machine also has a very small physical button on the left of the machine which will cause it to boot straight into the BIOS/boot menu; a *very* cool feature for those who tinker a lot.

Screen: Average. The resolution is mediocre, at 720p. Brightness is not overly impressive. The brightness keys have the capability of turning the screen off, like MacBooks, a feature I quite like. Every once in a while my screen will "flash". I have not been able to conclude if its a hardware problem or a problem with Ubuntu, but it is so rare that I haven't had the opportunity to see it but out of the corner of my eye.

Battery: Ten lightyears beyond abysmal. In Windows 8, I was averaging around 2 hours. When I installed Ubuntu, that number dropped to 1 hour 10 minutes average. This is on medium brightness, and very low load levels. I could squeeze out another 20 minutes if I disable WiFi. The battery is exposed and user replaceable; another welcome feature compared to other ultrabooks. However, I can't find *anyone* that sells a replacement, let alone a unit with upgraded capacity. Not even Lenovo; the S405 is not even listed on their available model list, with the closest model being the incompatible S300.

Performance: Average. Again, for the price, I was pleasantly surprised. Day-to-day usage, such as internet browsing, is perfectly fast. I was capable of loading World of Warcraft on the machine, and managed to log between 20-35 FPS on low/medium settings. Boot time is acceptable on both Windows 8 and Ubuntu. For those who care: The Ubuntu install process was very painless, with no EFI or driver problems to report.

Overall: Do not buy. I was able to obtain this machine during a sale for much less than what it is currently priced. However, even at that lower price, I cannot recommend this machine. I have not experienced any of the unique issues which plague some other users on Amazon, so my experience and conclusion was formed with a fully operational unit. Even then, I would be scared to recommend it even at half its current price. Purchase with caution.

This is by no means a fancy Apple product or similar. It's a very basic (for 2013) laptop that will serve the average laptop user's needs perfectly.

It's lightweight, the sound system is excellent (note there appear to be speakers underneath laptop. Can still hear very well), and the design is very sleek and attractive. In fact it looks so much like my roommates MacBook that I occasionally confuse the two, until I pick hers up and realize it's so much heavier.

I primarily use my computers for basic Internet stuff, as well as watching Netflix, Hulu, etc. The screen resolution (that's the right word, right?) is perfectly adequate and a darn sight better than my last laptop (4 years old now). I am sure you could get something better on a pricier computer, but everything is still clear, crisp, and very watchable. There's very little issue with images becoming too dark when you tilt the screen slightly, which is nice because you don't constantly have to adjust either your angle or the laptop's.

The ergonomic keyboard actually does help with my carpal tunnel in that I don't notice an increase in pain level after hours of use. The Intelligent Touchpad is decent. I know it has to walk the line on touch sensitivity, so I can't fault it too much for not always responding when I "tap" to get it to click on a link etc.

The battery life is fine. I've not tested it to full potential yet but I've gone a good 3+ hours watching Netflix/Hulu on it without it needing to be charged. It does, however, eat up battery if you just close it and leave it unplugged. You have to put it on Sleep if you don't want to wake up the next morning and have less than an hour of battery left.

Windows 8 took a bit of getting used to and frankly I'm still not convinced I like it. Not the laptop's fault.

I wouldn't recommend this laptop for anything outside of the basic stuff. If you need a laptop to play games, to install a lot of programs, and whatever else people do on computers these days (I'm far too young to sound this old), then move on up the line and spend the money to get what you need.

I got this on sale when I just really needed to replace my old (and nearly dead) Dell. I am happy with it. It does what I need it to do, while also being light, attractive, and easy to transport.

Directly out of the shipping box I received the following message "Unable to install windows, please restart your installation. . .," but this was easier said than done, due to no onboard DVD drive, much less a Windows installation disk or product key. To Lenovo's credit, however, I was able to quickly reach a live technician via their support number, who steered me to a "hard reset" button just beside the power button but on the side of the case. This commenced a relatively problem free Windows 8 installation. This was the 3rd one I had done on three different laptops. It apparently restored from files stored (along with drivers, digital manual, etc) under a hard drive partition marked "Lenovo." The next problem was inability to link to WiFi due to an IP configuration error. Lenovo tech support did not do so well this time, promising me a call back Christmas Eve morning, which has not been received roughly 36 hours later. Luckily, however, the next WiFi site I tried (with an ATT U-verse rather than a cable modem) connected just fine. The machine worked well, once I figured out how to disable the silly Windows 8 "Tile" startup screen and get back to a classic style windows desktop. The only remaining problem as I am writing this is that the onboard webcam is not being recognized, no luck in re=installing the drivers. The machine gives an error message regarding an "unrecognized USB device, which I am guessing is the camera. More to follow as this situation unfolds. Despite all this, I actually like the machine, since it is both light but big enough to have a 14 inch screen and boots very quickly.

UPDATE: Factory repair replaced the motherboard and it worked great, but this was way more work than a brand new machine out of the box should require. I am still also curious whether or not this is a quad core chip, as advertised.

Summary:

I bought this laptop primarily for running accounting and desk top publishing software....to work on the go and to start getting used to Windows 8.

Although I was already familiar with this AMD chip series, I was surprised at how well the peppy A6 handled the programs I through at it. I even went as far to install MW3 on it just to see how it would handle games. MW3 looks and plays great without hick-ups or stuttering. I didn't buy it for gaming but it's nice to know it can handle a graphic intense game like MW3 if you want it to.

It doesn't have an optical drive but at this weight and thickness, you wouldn't expect it to. And although you can't call it an Ultrabook since it's powered by AMD and running an old school hard drive, it looks and in many cases performs better than many Ultrabooks.

Many users have complained about the battery life and certainly, it's not very good. But keep in mind Windows 8 is a pretty big power draw since it's constantly pulling data to keep your Start screen populated. Toss it in airplane mode and adjust the screen brightness and you'll see a noticeable increase in battery life. Or go even further and slow down the processor when you don't need it at full performance.

My only real complaint is that it's missing a VGA port so I'll need to pick up an HDMI to VGA converter to use any of the monitors I currently have.

Bottom Line: At around $329 it'll make most people very happy.

Dell Inspiron 14" i14RN-1364DBK Laptop with Inter Core i3-2330M 2.2Ghz, 4GB DDR3 Memory, 640GB Hard

The interface selection is decent, Dell didn't cut corners here, even though more than just 3 USB ports would be nice.

For ~$600, an i3 was ok in Summer, but with the Year drawing to its end and Intel's new Ivy Bridge CPU's showing up in a couple of months, it would have been nice if a discounted i5 with its HD3000 could have made it into this model.

There's no dedicated GPU at all, so you're stuck with the i3's anemic integrated graphics... e

As for the screen, I find the 1366x768 pixel resolution poor, no matter what fancy names they give it. But Dell isn't alone with this, everything from 11" to 15" comes with this atrocious resolution these days.

To me, this resolution would be effective in an entry level gaming machine with a lower mid-range GPU like the HD6630M or GT540M, since those GPUs do a lot better with low resolutions.

This notebook however has no GPU, so you won't be playing any games with it leaving it for people who only do office work and maybe watch an occasional video. For office work, 1366x768 is extremely poor, especially if you're stuck with Microsoft's latest version of Office with those big ribbons... there is very little screen space left for Excel and Word to display what you're actually trying to work on. You can forget about legibly displaying a whole page of a document. In Excel, you'll be in a hell of scrolling-up-and-down-and-back-and-forth.

So, I consider this display a mismatch for the only role this laptop can fulfill. (if you want nothing more than browse the web, you could of course buy a much lighter weight netbook, or, god forbid, a tablet)

Lastly, its not exactly light weight for the screen size, there are 15.6" notebooks that weigh less.

You are probably able to configure this model differently on Dell's website, but there can be drastic price differences in either direction, even for a unit with identical spec, cause Dell's own quoted prices never include tax, so on Dells site your bill jumps when you reach checkout, on Amazon it doesn't. At other times, Dell may have cut its prices, while the sales channel is still full of product with the old price. So do yourself a favor and double check :)

the only complaint is that the speakers are on the bottom, and are not the best. I would recommend a good set of ear/head phones

Speed, power, all great.

Battery life is exceptional for me. I play a lot of music, so it is understandably a shorter battery life.

I was just looking for a replacement hard drive for my 7764CTO think-pad tablet, which I've owned for three years now, and the very negative review caught my eye. I also own a fujitsu slate and this machine is far superior in battery life and flexibility. I need the keyboard when I run virtual machines with client development environments. My only complaint would be speed, which is passable, but it's an older machine. I want something with an i7 and 8GB of RAM my machine is upgraded to 4GB, which is marginal, but was top of the line for the form factor when I bought it. I plan to buy a desktop replacement, and still tote around my tablet for meetings, email, etc. as an iPad just won't cut it for these purposes. You can't go wrong with this laptop, if it is treated with respect.

Not the most powerful machine (1.6 GHz Core2 Duo; up to 4GB RAM), but it is a thinkpad, and that means it will last. I have used mine for almost 5 years, and it still works well (and I am not easy on it). You may have to replace a part once in a while (I replaced hinge recently, it was the only major failure), and some of the plastic face plates might crack, but the computer itself will just keep working. I am running Win7 Pro with no problems at all.

Pros:

Battery life (5-6 hours)

Pen input (flawless)

Durable (anything important is tough)

Keyboard (cannot overstate, thinkpad keyboard is perfect + keys are removable/re-attachable)

Thinkpad programs: Power Manager (best I've ever seen), Active Protection/Airbag HDD protection, etc.

Cons:

plastic bezel and things crack easily

No CD/DVD drive

Intel gma integrated graphics are weak (use low settings on post~2006 games)

I am not sure what you are talking about... Of course I wouldn't spend $2,200 on this now, which is what I paid for the computer five years ago when it was new, but at a few hundred this is a steal! My hinge lasted 4+ years of *hard* use. My power cord did fray at one point, but Lenovo has redesigned them so they don't now. And your fan must be bad, because mine is silent on battery and barely purrs unless I am really working it (though to be honest in the past few months the fan has gotten a little louder)

This tablet sucks. I know because I have one and I spent a lot of money on it. It is nosie the screen is about to fall of I have problems with the charging port. Its just a piece of garbage. Save your money and buy a Dell.

HP Pavilion dv6-3250us 15.6-Inch Entertainment Notebook PC (Silver)

An awesome laptop. Very good looking design (argento on brushed aluminum). Feels sturdy in hand. All the bells and whistles as per the specifications including a backlit keyboard (which was really the selling point for me). Only problem and I mean the ONLY problem for me is the click/touch pad... to click on an item and/or drag and drop is kind of cumbersome to execute...the click part of the pad feels a bit stiff or too far down from the location I'm used to it being in on other laptops...but I figure I'll get used to it after a while. What I think would have been great to just make this the ideal compact and economical merge of hardware vs. price would be integrated bluetooth. But no sweat for me I already had an IOgear bluetooth dongle to connect....Again, awesome laptop!

*UPDATE* I've recently discovered a work-around to my "only problem". The configurations for the touch pad allows you to set a double tap action as a means of dragging and dropping as well as selecting an item or an entire phrase/page in a document or web page. Quite nifty. So no more problems, just a great deal on a good laptop.

I spent a good two weeks comparing laptops in the $600-$800 range, and this one gets you the most bang for your buck -by far. Huge hard drive, speedy processor, and enough RAM to run Pro Tools 9 (in other words, plenty of RAM). The back-lit keyboard and fingerprint reader are a nice touch, as is the wide screen. Speakers are surprisingly good for a laptop, too. My only qualm is that it comes loaded with useless software -a whole punch of programs and games made by HP and Microsoft that you really don't need. It only took about a half-hour to clear those out, though, and from then on it's been smooth sailing. Also, it doesn't come with a full Microsoft Office Suite, just the starter, which is Word and Excel with these annoying ads. But Word and Excel are clunky and weak compared to Open Office, which you can download and install lickety-split at . Did I mention Open Office is free, too? Goodness I love freeware.

In short: I am a very picky purchaser. I checked every store and website I could find, and if $800 is your limit, BUY THIS LAPTOP. The fingerprint reader will totally amaze your friends.

This laptop is great. The processor is super-fast, backlit keyboard is amazing, and I love the fingerprint scanner. The graphics look great and once you tweak the sound a little, the sound isn't too bad. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone and I can't say enough about the backlit keyboard. It's kind of like getting your first DVR, you didn't see why everyone was making such a big deal about them, but once you get one you can't imagine going without it again.

The price I paid for this computer is well worth it. I LOVE this computer. It is my first HP laptop and the first day I got it I fell in love with the design. Another cool feature that I love about this dv6 is the backlit keyboard and fingerprint reader. The only disadvantage that I found with the fingerprint reader is that I get so use to it and I forget my password when I am on other computers because I am so use to just swiping my finger and it just logs in for me. One issue that I encountered when I first got it with the fingerprint reader is that whenever I log into pages like facebook, my cursor would become disabled and turn into a cross and not allow me to make any selections. After contacting HP about the issue, we figured out that my internet explorer needed to be updated. I was using the original IE9 that was installed in the computer so I had to update to IE10 and it finally worked to this day. Another issue about this dv6 is the battery life. It says that it can give you about 5 hours of battery life, but it doesn't. After a full charge and I check my battery life it says 3 hours and 45 minutes. When unplugged it does last the three hours and 45 mins. I LOVE that whenever I play a movie on here it automatically asks me to switch over to a power saving mode while watching to movie and extends my battery life. I've kept my laptop on watching movies and doing other things my entire flight from east coast to west coast and still had about 30 minutes remaining when we landed. I LOVE the energy efficient options that it gives. One thing that I'm still trying to figure out is the setting for the webcam. I've used it in really dark rooms and it automatically brightens up the background, but there are so many features to mess with that I haven't gotten around to figuring out the right setting for me. I am still trying to figure out how to turn on the power boost. According to the specs it has 2.66 GHZ but can power boost up to 2.93GHz. It loads the main screen really fast and connect to the internet really fast at 2.66GHz. I just wanted to see how much faster 2.93GHz was. Overall, this laptop is well worth the money. It comes with a 1yr manufactor warranty, but I would contact HP after making this purchase and insure it with accidental damage plus in home care services. It costs about $124.00 for a year, so I'd be sure to take full advantage of that service. :) I guarantee that you will love this computer for this price. Well worth it!! Excellent product and excellent customer service and support from HP.

The computing hardware in this PC are fine and it was cheap to upgrade from 4 GB of RAM to 8. (The price for the computer is cheap and you get what you pay for, plastic case and look.) But there are two big drawbacks to this machine. First the touchpad drives me CRAZY! It is fickle and jumps all over the place. As other reviews have said, you will want to use a mouse or you will be tearing your hair out. Second is the really, really weak and tinny sounding speakers. Even with a good pair of headphones the sound is still like something you would get from a cheap radio with no bass. One other minor problem for me was the extra keys on the left side of the keyboard. I had to get used to moving my hands to the right enough to hit the correct keys. That is more a matter of personal adjustment. But the speakers and the touchpad are really two things you want to think about carefully and might be a reason for hesitation.

Update: I have had this laptop for over a month now and I really have no problems with it EXCEPT for the touchpad. It is THE WORST I have ever used. Attaching a mouse is sometimes a pain but using this touchpad will give your wrist a pain and it causes the cursor to jump on the screen which adds time to any of your tasks. I also upgrades the memory to 8GB and it was pretty easy using memory from Crucial.com. Performance is not a problem. But the touchpad may drive you to another plain of frustration.

Dell Latitude D430 Core 2 Duo 1.3Ghz 80Mb 2048Mb Win XP Pro

The laptop was chosen to replace my broken Acer netbook. The goal was also to find a better screen size.

The computer was delivered quickly and no damage on the box. Within 5 minutes after inspection I had the computer running. The Dell D430 has the appearance of a solid machine and works faster than I expected. The screen is great, the sound a little tinny for watching movies. The wide screen is not 16:9 but the 1280x800 shows web sites and photos nicely. A sign of professional computers is that there are double buttons with the trackpad. There is also a trackpoint but I do not use that as I am geared towards the mouse.

As a "compact" laptop the machine is light, but not to light. There is no space for an optical drive, so they gave me an external USB connected drive. It does not burn DVDs but that does not bother me as I have other computers for that purpose. With the HD capacity of 60 GB, of which 20 GB are taken, there is no room for big projects. I searched for bigger hard disks as backup but 1.8 inch hard disks max out at 120 GB and get expensive (other than my broken netbook which came with a 250GB drive).So I use an SD card as storage extension (like for downloads) and an external drive for my video/audio/photo stuff. The USB ports have enough power to run my external drives. On top, there is a firewire port which I like for an external drive. Integrated Bluetooth runs my wireless mouse.

Dell has a weird power connector and I will be looking for a duplicate power tip because I do not want to be without a backup. The computer gets hot on the right side which I think is not unusual, especially not with dual core processors. So do not use it right on your lap but get a cooling pad.

Talking backup: XP and Dell utilities are on a hidden disk partition and I did not find out yet how to copy that to a hard disk. If the hard disk dies I want to be able to recover XP. My files are backed up on an external drive anyway. There was not a single sheet of paper with the computer so it takes some knowledge to work things out.

But right now: I am happy I bought that computer.

This Dell is a little old but it runs great! Dell used to make really good products. Comparing this to a modern netbook I would say that it is easily the same speed. You get more ram than on a new netbook but the ram runs at slower Hz so close to the same. I got this for about $200 and that was a pretty good deal for what you get. The case is durable and looks good. It has a matt screen which I prefer, less glare and more true to life color. The resolution 1280x800 is the same as the 13.3in macbook all on the smaller 12in screen so you get great clarity. The bottom does get really hot on mine though so that is one drawback. Also on most of these you get the dvd drive separate, meaning its not part of the laptop. Battery life is decent. the power cord is fairly large which matters if you are buying this because this is meant for portability. Overall this is a really good laptop!

I've owned this tiny laptop since it was released in 2007 and will continue to use it until it becomes obsolete. I've had a good reference on this line of laptops because I'd previously bought my mom a Dell Latitude D400, which is now approaching 10yr old, yet not one piece of hardware on that laptop has needed replacement (except for the battery). My D430 is pretty much the same. In contrast, my Inspiron 700m 12.1" laptop already required two new inverters, two keyboards, and a new case replacement w/ touchpad. The quality of the D430's keyboard and buttons proved itself after 5 years because not one letter has faded and every key/button pushes like new. If you're thinking of getting a netbook or a small laptop, I would suggest that you consider a D430. You could easily find a refurbished one w/ a Core2Duo & 2GB RAM for less than $200. Also, I would highly recommend any D430 user to get the Media Base dock, which you could find on Ebay for anywhere from $25-$50 (the price depends on whether you want a DVD or DVD-RW drive in it). This would also take care of the heat issues, allowing you to use it comfortably on your lap or leave it on the bed or sofa surface w/o worries of overheating. Whenever you need to go light, just pull it off the dock and leave everything at home.

We think highly of Dell. This Dell reconditioned computer was described as having XP which is why it was ordered in the first place. It arrived with Win 7. We emailed the selling company but they never acknowledged our email. We called them and a recording said their mail box was full. We will keep the item as we wish to avoid anything with Win 8, but we do not think the seller lived up to the described item. not to communicate was not good customer service either.
