Apple iBook G3 500Mhz 128MB 10Gb CDROM 12.1'' OS X OFFICE 2004 Plus Upgraded Models Available

Apple iBook G3 500Mhz 128MB 10Gb CDROM 12.1'' OS X OFFICE 2004 Plus Upgraded Models AvailableThis little white computer rocks. Don't know where they got them from, and how they are able to sell them for so cheap. I hope they didn't fall off the back of a truck. (Just Kidding.) I'm very impressed, though. I've been a Mac user for 8 years. This is just another example of Macs great craftsmanship. I would suggest this Mac to anyone who wants to have everything and be up-to-date in the Mac world without paying $1,2000 and up. There's only a few minor suggestions I have: download the newest software after installing Mac OS X Tiger (It costs about a $100 bucks.), google search Firefox and install it, and go to apple.com and search in the support section for this Mac, iBook G4, so you can get the user's manual. That's about it, and it will be running like you paid $1,400 for it.

And where are the blemishes!!??? I didn't see any. Awesome deal, awesome Mac. You guys rock!!!

This computer is byfar the BEST laptop I've ever had. Being a college student it was imperative that I find something cheap but good. And the fact that I was able to find a Mac at such a low price still amazes me. I got mine today and it works like a dream! You can surf the web incredibly fast. Save alot of music, plays dvd's nice and crisp. Wireless is very simple and easily acessible. I just love it and I would recommend it to anyone!

Ps. This laptop would be perfect for a college student!

Received this product and i had some problems, the airport card wasnt functioning so i bought a new one, then the computer needed software, which i didnt figure in having to purchase. So, for me it was disappointing, but i sold it to my sitter, and she got a great deal, she was very pleased to own an apple, i was very happy to go back to my pc w/microsoft fuctions. So, guess its up to you, if your an apple fan, and already familiar this is a great product, and for those of us who havent a clue about the apple software etc..this is a real pain to convert. I have to say it was nice and small, and for me that was what i wanted for my college work, and it was light weight.

Want Apple iBook G3 500Mhz 128MB 10Gb CDROM 12.1'' OS X OFFICE 2004 Plus Upgraded Models Available Discount?

I purchased an iBook for college, being an Apple user since 2006. I've tried PCs on the side, but programming on a Mac is top-notch and really professional with XCode. This isn't even mentioning usage and speed! My new iBook runs like a charm! I can run Windows(R) XP (in an emulator, of course), Safari, iTunes, and several other apps at the same time, with plenty of speed left. Try that on a PC!

I think this notebook is really the Apple version of a netbook--only WITH a CD drive. It's still about as small and light even with the CD drive.

Plus, it came with all the aethestics looking great, as well as the hardware. It's about 7 to 8/10 cheaper than a MacBook as well, so if you don't want to buy a MacBook, then get an iBook!

However, new PC users need to check out Mac Help from the Help menu, then click "New to OS X?" and then click "Windows switchers" to get started. The trackpad tends to be more sensitive on here, so make sure your hands are clean before use. Just to let you know.

Finally, if you like gaming or need a big screen, the iBook is not what you'd be looking at--in that case, look more at a MacBook Pro. But if you want a computer that 'just works', get an iBook.

HP Pavilion dv8t Quad Edition series - FULL HD (1080) - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel Quad C

HP Pavilion dv8t Quad Edition series - FULL HD - Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, Intel Quad Core i7-720QM Processor, 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M, 3GB DDR3 System Memory, 250GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive, 18.4' High Definition HP Ultra BrightView Infinity Display, Fingerprint Reader, HP Mobile Remote Control, LightScribe 8X DVD+/-RW Double Layer Support, Wireless N, Gigabit Network Card, HDMI, Webcam, 8 Cell Li-Ion Battery, Microsoft(R) Works 9.0I've owned this machine for several years. About 3 months in, the touch buttons started to act oddly. At first the wifi would turn off unexpectedly. Sometimes the volume would go up and down sporadically or the treble and/or Base would adjust up and down. I knew this because it would show on the display which interrupted my work and sometimes turned the internet off.

I stupidly didn't do anything about this until after the warranty expired, but they still attempted to update some drivers and so forth for free despite being out of warranty. No such luck fixing it. I think I spent probably $3,000 on this laptop when I bought it.

I read online that the true fix for this problem is to dismantle the computer and wrap the button assembly in some kind of insulative tape. I did not do this. I just live with my internet occasionally shutting off and sometimes I can't get on the web at all until I bend and flex the laptop or push on the keyboard in just this one spot until it comes back on.

The machine performs well despite that complete defect. Other than that, the machine runs hot, the batteries last about a half hour fully charged because of the massive amount of memory and processor power. It is a massive and heavy machine for a laptop witch makes a great machine for computing, but horrible to take through the airport. I only found one laptop bag that would accomodate the size at the time.

The remote control is nice, although tied somehow to the HP entertainment suite of lame software that I have only once bothered to use.

My wifi has turned off twice during the typing of this post.

I will likely stay away from HP Products in the future.

I have had mine since 12/2010. It came with 1 500 gig 7200 rpm hard drive, There are 2 bays for hard drives. I installed another 750 gig in the second bay even though H.P. said it would not work. Went on line and found the connecter for 12 dollars. Their Tech support sucks unless you are from India and can keep up with them when they start getting very exited and talking faster, and faster and faster. This laptop is very heavy, but the good (far outweighs the bad) The full 1080P picture is outstanding and, the sound is like no other laptop I have ever heard, It actually has a sub woofer.(IT IS LOUD) This computer never froze on me. I got mine with 6gigs of memory 1gig 230 gforce 230m video card, I7920 processor,8 cell battery.intigrated tv tuner,antenna,remote/bluray player/dual layer DVD burner/no blu tooth/Brightveiw screen that can be seen from all angles with no ghosting/fingerprint reader/Windows7Pro and built in recovery that I used about a year ago just to refresh it. The cons however are low battery life, and crappy H.P. software such as the tone control for bass and treble which will pop up on screen and drive you nuts.Go to start/run/ msconfig/startup/tone control and uncheck it. This due to a static electricity build up that HP has been aware of and has done nothing about. You can take the battery out and hold your finger on the power button for about 30 seconds to discharge the static but it will come back within hours.Just set your bass and treble and disable the HP tone control. Another one is the H.P. TV tuner software,(Garbage) use media center for you TV. Be aware that when using media center your computer will not wake out of sleep mode to record any shows that you selected?? HP doesn't know either,They just get exited and start talking faster when you ask them why??? One more little problem is after about a year you will get a rattle from the sub woofer on the bottom of the unit. This is due to the cheap little plastic cover that covers the sub woofer itself. My buddy got the same computer and his started doing the same thing. I just took a rubberband and made a gasket and it solved the problem. This computer does get warm but not hot like some of the other reviews said. If you use it for any type of gaming get the NZXT CRYO LX aluminum note book cooler from amazon, it is AWSOME! All in All any computer will have it's problems, They all do! The problems with this machine I can deal with! It has been a killer computer for what I spent in 2010 at $1400 with the 3 year warranty. Now I see them on line for $2500 dollars, What is that all about? (GREED)

If you want a awesome large screen laptop for school, work, or multimedia, this is an awesome machine. I bought one 2 Christmas's ago and am typing this review on it now. I bought it for $1400 with the blu-ray and i7 proc with some free upgrades at the HP online store. I use it almost every day and it's been working very well. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is that it has a heating problem, so I can't recommend this machines for gamers. If you have heavy graphics going on, the graphics processor will overheat and there aren't enough vents to keep it cool. It will start to freeze, especially when it gets older. You will need a laptop fan, and if you use the HDMI port you will need to set the graphics to only laptop screen or hdmi out, and not both. This will help keep it cool, especially at 1080P. I use this computer for surfing, Netflix, HBO-GO, and music to my Sony Bravia TV/receiver. I DO NOT recommend using it as a DVD/blu-ray player as it will wear down the hardware, use a $100 player for that.

I have owned this computer since December 2009 and can honestly say I have only had one problem with it that was not quickly remedied with a driver update or one clean OS reinstall, neither of which should be considered even "eventful" for a computer this powerful with technology that was far from mature when it was manufactured. Otherwise, this has been an exceptional, trouble free computer, day in/day out for 3.5 years with no parts replacements needed and still performing as well as today's common Core i7 ULV processors and integrated HD4000 graphics. Moreover the screen has gorgeous colors, superb viewing angles and 18.4" is an incredible luxury whether you are multitasking or watching a blu ray video. Multimedia experience is enhanced by what was at the time pretty much the best on-board audio in any laptop and still holds its own today. The port selection is beyond compare and even USB3 not a standard when this was manufactured is easily attained via a $15 ExpressCard adapter. The keyboard is large, comfortable with excellent feel and response; that said, my single greatest complaint with this machine is the lack of a backlit keyboard. It took several years before these have finally become more common, but the lack of one was then as is now unbecoming a "luxury" laptop. Battery life is a joke. I bought 2 extra batteries so that I could manage 4 hrs away from the wall plug in a pinch! One battery is mostly useful for moving the laptop from one room to another without having to interrupt a process or wait a minute to reboot it once relocated. But it is still very convenient to be able to move from the office to the bedroom to switch from heavy DTR duty to in-room movies and music, particularly when on a vacation road trip. With HP's ridiculously generous coupons I paid a whopping $1,050 for a Core i7-720Q, 4GB (upgraded to 8 for $50), blu ray, tv tuner, FHD, high contrast, wide color gamut screen, superb audio, every connection imaginable and 2 bays for one SSD for programs and one 1TB HDD for all the content you could ever want to store on a single computer. Again, that was $1,050 in 2009, and it has given great service for almost 4 years. I don't consider the infamous "black screen" problem anything but a distant memory that appeared on some of the earliest shipments in late 2009/early 2010 and took one nVidia video driver update to cure the occasional blackout thing and rare BSODs. I don't really know of any other computer, Apple included, that can boast such trouble free service over so many years.

As for the quality of customer/technical support, it has varied tremendously over the past 4 years. Since I had no major problems, I only needed an occasional call for problem solving but came to rely more on online forums for quick and accurate help. I have owned almost every brand of laptop over the past 10 years and can honestly say that no manufacturer Apple included has had consistently good support. Computers aren't like TVs or refrigerators, or even cars. You've got to either know something about them and their eccentricities, or you have to have a friend who does! I guess iPads are the closest you can come to a trouble free computer, but the "real" uses for them are quite limited.

I'll close on a down note, but one which is also quite remediable and for me to skip it would taint my otherwise positive review. Discussed below is the one true flaw of the DV8t and the various Easy, Inexpensive, Undramatic ways to deal with it. Had someone read what I write below years ago and published it everywhere HP DV8t owners looked for help (I did do this as often as possible) or if HP had the guts to admit the problem and offer these solutions, the major bad rap on this machine would have dissolved into a non-issue and its virtues would be the main topic of owner reviews. In case you still own one but don't use it because of "the problem," or have an opportunity to grab one for $300-$500 barely used on eBay, strongly consider doing so if it otherwise meets your needs, as there is really no reason to avoid this machine due to an easily avoided but much heralded design defect. So read on if you are curious and by all means do so if you already own this machine and have put it in a closet in disgust. Good luck!

The one problem that needed concerted and multiple efforts to overcome was the infamous wifi touch control switching wifi off and on for no apparent reason well, the reason turned out to be a build up of static electricity on a wide panel of capacitive touch media controls that was poorly designed not to insulate the controls from static electricity build up. The fix for the media control on/off issue is simple: disable all of them with one command in msconfig (there are other options as well, but this has the fewest steps). The wifi control not so easy. You can disable it, but by doing so you will disable wifi. One or more of 4 solutions combined to make this too a non-issue: 1) It happened very rarely, usually 3-9 months apart and never for the duration of one day; 2) you could often eliminate it (for at least 3-9 months!) by spraying the row of touch controls with anti-static spray made for LCD screens, and for good measure disconnect the power, take out the battery and press the power on button for around 30 secs to drain all excess static elec; 3) Just for those times when it was particularly inconvenient and resistant to quick fixes, for under $40 I got an excellent USB stick wireless N wifi radio. You then disable the internal wifi card and the USB stick will install itself and give you perfect service. For most, who leave this on a desk or table, there is really no need to use the internal wifi card, but if you do travel with it, just pack the tiny USB wifi card in case you hit "the problem."

It's true that you can probably get a two year old HP DV7 with a Sandy Bridge Quad Core cpu, a decent midrange gpu, a 1080p IPS screen and quite good sound with decent though not comporable connectivity options and certainly no finnicky media and wifi switches, perhaps for as little as $700. It would also be about 2 lbs lighter and run perhaps 3 hours on a battery charge, vs. barely one with the DV8. I am constantly amazed by the resale value the DV8 has maintained based on eBay completed sales data and have been tempted to sell this for $500-$700 over the past year and pick up a 2 year newer model such as the DV7 I just described. But I mostly use a DTR today only for certain heavy lifting "batch" jobs like video editing or transcoding or for having a "traveling IT and multimedia entertainment center" for recreational road trips and one thing I know about my own DV8 is that it has an impeccable track record and, other than replacing the HDD as a precaution, I expect it will continue to provide excellent service as I don't tax it very much or run it very hot. So I may just save our landfills one more electronic environmental assault and just keep running this until it's ready to be sold for parts still fetching as much as $300 because there are so many devotees to "vintage" computers and this one has a predecessor, the HP HDX 18 which had an identical chassis and internals with the exception of the cpu and gpu. If it's possible to love a computer, I just about do this one, and I own some of the finest laptops made including Sony Vaio Z 13" 2.5 3.1 lb marvels of power, versatility and phenomenal screens and yet no computer has ever made me look forward to getting down to work as this monster sheep in wolf's clothing!

I would avoid this computer because the volume and wi-fi go off and on so often many people stop using the computer and swear they will never buy a HP again. This also affects the bluetooth. Personally the wi-fi became unusable and I started using an ethernet cable only. Some people posted there is a way to insulate wires to stop the problem but it takes a half hour and sounds complicated and technical. I got some help when I was under warranty (mostly through Costco concierge who would get HP on the phone with us) but the problems kept coming back and now my warranty is over. It is surprising mistake that HP is not standing behind this widespread and well know problem and fixing it. If they took care of this problem, the computer would be good. I was going to say if they don't stand behind this the company will likely tank. I then decided to check the stock prices to see if I was correct and I am. see From the time I purchased the computer about the end of 2009 the stock when down to less than half. In contrast IBM went up over 30%, see

I have had this laptop for 2 weeks. It came with Win8 and it is very touchy like the other reviewer says. But I don't think it is Win8, I think it is this piece of junk touchpad. If you put too much pressure on the bezel next to the touchpad, the mouse jumps to another spot. I want to take a hammer to this piece of crap. The memory it came with, 4GB DDR3, is the worst in the market. I did some research and found out that the memory is slower than DDR2 in some cases. I purchase 8GB DDR3, Patriot brand, and it now runs faster and smoother. I do not recommend this laptop simply for the fact that the touchpad is garbage. I have a couple of IBM Thinkpads that I really love and I thought I would have the same experience but I was wrong. One of the problems with the touchpad is that there are no buttons, it is just a big rectangle with the buttons under the lower-left and -right corners. Sometimes they respond and sometimes they don't. JUNK!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPUTER IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO!!!

MSI WorkStation GT60 0NG-294US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

MSI WorkStation GT60 0NG-294US 15.6-Inch LaptopFirst I would like to say that this is a good brand, not known to the masses like a Dell, HP, etc but I bet you could find a MotherBoard made by MSI inside them so if you are doubting this product because you havent heard of them then take my words for it or you could still do a google search on them.

Now that out of the way I bought this laptop not for me but for a cousin however I was given the task to look for a laptop good enough for her (she is studying architecture ) and within a $2000 budget.

After careful research and learning I did (I needed to know about the programs people in her field use AutoDesk etc) I came to the conclusion that this laptop was the suited for the job, first and foremost because for the applications they use, the NVIDIA Quadro was made for that and they are actually certified by them.

I compared this laptop with a gaming one and to me this one was just the better choice, of course that depends where your priorities are since the owner of this laptop isn't into gaming this was no brainer however despite of that this Nvidia Quadro GPU is strong enough for some current games.

MSI nailed a good combination of work and gaming into a solid machine, it has all the pro's of a gaming machine along with enough seriousness to be used in a professional environment.

The only thing I didn't like about it was that they just put 1 750HDD, though they left one empty slot for a second one in case the need of more space arises. (I bet a 256GB SSD or 512GB SSD if you can, coupled with 1TB HDD would be nice on this laptop)

Overall, it was a good purchase and I highly recommend it if you find yourself looking for a good laptop that could last you at least 3-4 years without a hassle.

My Samsung Series 7 has enough juice in the meantime and I don't regret the purchase one bit(amazing good looking laptop) but my next upgrade in 3 years will be a MSI gaming laptop I really like how this guys build theirs even if the GT60 0NG-294US is a workstation it really leaves a good impression.

Keep doing a good work MSI!

Definitely worth the price...all the features you can possibly want and more..fast..fast.great picture ..it is a bit heavy and yes it can be a little noisy but well worth it.

MSI A6000-225US Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500 2.30GHz, 3GB, 320GB HDD, DVD Super-Mult

MSI A6000-225US Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core T4500 2.30GHz, 3GB, 320GB HDD, DVD Super-Multi , 16' Display, Built-in Webcam, Windows 7 Home PremiumI bought this because it is a slightly lighter (under 5lb) 16-inch machine at a good deal. Here are my peeves in order of frustration level.

1. Wireless reception is VERY weak. I read about this on MSI Wind on other forums too. It cannot catch 802.11 n over a 2 story 2500 sq ft house. Only in the room with wireless router and the next room. All my other devices have no problems AT ALL. I can catch signals upstairs, downstairs, in bathrooms with other devices (laptops and iphones/ipods)...

2. Touch pad is slightly different for scrolling etc. from the Synaptics style so that's a little relearning curve.

3. Windows Update gave some failures. Could be a Windows 7 issue but I have not seen these on other Win-7 machine. And I haven't even installed too much SW or apps yet.

So if you want long-distance wireless or Synaptics style touch pad, this is not for you.

Toshiba Satellite S875-S7356 17.3-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum)

Toshiba Satellite S875-S7356 17.3-Inch LaptopGreat screen resolution, and the built in software that makes older DVDs look better actually works. Energy saver cuts in automatically if you leave the screen open and forget about it. The keyboard feels great, it's just like a full size desk top KB. The two button cursor pad reacts quickly and is easy to use with one hand. It is set up as an on line entertainment PC, so if you want to use it for work, about half the software on the computer is completely useless. Windows 8 comes with a start page, which is just an extra step to get where you want to be. It is obviously designed for internet touch screen devices and it's a useless addition for a device without a touch screen, but that's more a comment about W8 than about this computer. It's plug and play with everything I connected to it so far, so no installation CDs required for any of my devices. Logged on to the internet and it immediately registered Windows and was ready to go. Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 is just as bad as all the previous versions, so I replaced it with the latest version of Firefox. A lot of software on there either expires in 30 days or you have to sign up immediately to use, which is pretty much what you get on every computer, unlike the good old days when you got free full versions of things like MS Word, complete with install disk, which I just installed on this computer and it works just fine, so I don't have to pay Microsoft for new versions of the same old software! For work use, the speed and memory are more than sufficient, but I just spent a few hours playing the free Penguins game on it, and it only stalled once, I don't know why maybe because I touched the pad with two fingers and it was confused. Only had it a week, but no problems yet.

I only wish this came with Windows Vista! I know that many might like Win 8, but the software I use in my business cannot run on it. I'm at a standstill untill I can get Win 8 offand transfer old files via Vista. Not Toshiba or Microsoft's fault, but would be AWESOME if buyers could choose which OS was to be loaded on their purchase.

When I received this I was having problems from the start with connecting to my mobile hotspot. My old computer there was no problems. So the first call they blamed it on interface problems with Windows 8, after asking my Grandson to attempt to hook up with his Dell/Windows 8, he had no problems connecting to my hotspot. So I returned the call and I was given a royal run around. They said they could fix my problem if I purchased a additional $149. level 3 tech assist package. After spending almost 2 hours on the phone with them trying to resolve my problem, one hour with my Son who is a network engineer I finally gave up and returned the computer.

Why should I have to pay $149. to get a new out of the box computer to work? Only plus with this transaction was Amazon's return policy! In addition, the call center is in the Phillipines and the accents are so profound that it's almost impossible to understand.

HP EliteBook Revolve 810 11.6' G1 Tablet Notebook - D3K51UTI purchased this model with 12 GBs of memory, the max you can get. I wanted to be able to run Hyper-V images on it, so I could leave my big Honk'in Elitebook 8560W at home, and take this computer on business trips. I need to run 2 virtual servers at the same time, one with AD and SQL, another with SharePoint 2010. This machine was able to do that without any performance differences relative to my Elitebook 8560W, while weighing about a 1/3 less (if you include the power adapters). It also makes a great touch screen windows 8 computer/tablet. The Ethernet adapter, 2 USB ports, displayport, and microSD slot is rare for this types of computer. I also have the docking station that adds 4 USB ports and a VGA adapter. This computer can do it all, I'm very happy with it.

Lenovo Ideapad Z570 1024A3U 15.6-Inch LaptopLenovo Offer's better deal than Amazon.com , Amazon sells very old model of the unit which was manufactured 1 year before . My notebook manufactured date was printed as "2010" which is like old stock to give it to user's / Consumers.

I had trouble registering online warranty due to 2010 Date stamp with Lenovo. Not Worth to buy from Amazon. If Amazon can publish Date of Manf It will be Great.

Lenovo offers better configuration with 8 GB memory for the same price.

I have ordered several of this exact Lenovo laptop and needless to say, I am quite pleased with the overall quality.

The only slight annoyance comes from the large mouse pad my hand often brushes over it and causes the cursor to move from where I had it, but this is something that one can adapt to quite easily.

Bought this to replace a HP laptop with a 14" screen that was about 3 years old. This one has a great processor that's relatively fast, nice size HD and a nice screen. The graphics system could be faster but this isn't a gaming system so I can live with it. It plays streaming videos well without getting too hot like my old HP laptop.

Very solid body. Looks slick!

VERY snappy CPU in this thing.

For the price you can not beat this!

I do recommend that you upgrade the ram to 8gb (it has one free slot, so just grab a ddr3 sodimm and you should be fine)

Asus K52F-BBR5 Laptop PC

Asus K52F-BBR5 Laptop PCi have had this laptop for sometime now and after messing around with it for a couple of days i fell in love i had an hp pavilion and that had alot of things that didnt work, so fr everything is working smoothly, the touch pad is pretty big and has some basic multi touch features and works pretty good even though im not the biggiest fan of them, the keypad is amazing! very comfortable and theres a set aside number pad!! 15.6 is big enough for me to edit videos on and the quad processor keeps it running i did upgrade it to 8gb of ram which u dont really need to do unless u plan on using A LOT of programs at once i left with the original 3gb for awhile it ran fast enough until i put final cut and premiere pro on here.over all its great deal i got mine under 400 at another store but i would still pay 500 for this laptop know what i know.

This laptop has been great for me so far. Picture and sound quality are good and has a pretty fast processor. I have downloaded most of the Adobe cs6 suite and the programs run smoothly. The only thing, the webcam on the computer was flipped when trying to use skype. I tried looking up how to fix it online but I wasn't able to. Overall great computer for a fantastic price.

I bought this unit for a friend of mine as a gift. I have heard that Asus brand is good and is built to last. This unit (Asus K52T-BBR5) failed right out of the box. I could not make it to stay on and log in. It would shut down and reboot itself, unless I switch to safe mode.

I contacted Amazon to return the item. Amazon referred me directly to the seller. The seller was take4less. I did not have a good experience communicating with the seller. Initially he agreed to take it back for a full refund plus the cost of return shipping. He never sent me the return label as he promised. It would take several days before he would respond by email. After he got the unit back, he claimed that the unit is working fine!

Not what I expected to experience on Amazon. As of today 5/7/12, I have not received my refund yet. My overall experience has been very poor. I will not purchase any electronic products from Amazon.

Apple MacBook Pro MB986LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop 2.8Ghz

Apple MacBook Pro MB986LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop 2.8GhzComing from a troubled Nvidia 8600M GT MacBook Pro let me say that I was very skeptical buying another Apple Laptop with nVidia chip in it.

However, one weekend I decided to visit the nearest Apple Retail Store and check out the newly released models. My decision was mostly influenced by the reduced prices and increased battery life.

After some debating over buying the older model for same price or getting the latest one we settled on the newest mid end $1999 model with 2 GPUs. As is common I got a very nice resale price for my older MacBook Pro as it had AppleCare.

This generation is an all around improvement over the past generation unless you happen to be using ExpressCard on 15" model that is. In our case we never used the ExpressCard after attempting to use a eSATA card that did not work really well. And we have a few SD Cards that we figure we can easily use.

So on to the specific improvements over its predecessor -

1) Battery Life I was very doubtful that the battery would last any longer than 4 hours at the maximum but was pleasantly surprised to find that for surfing/email type and the occasional CNN/Youtube flash videos getting 6+ hours was quite easy.

2) Prices No doubt prices are the most reasonable Apple laptops have ever had. If you have no need for the dual GPU you can get the $1699 model which comes with a respectable 2.53Ghz Processor, 4GB RAM and a very capable 9400M GPU.

3) Operating Temperature I have owned my share of laptops (Apple and non-Apple) and I have to say this one is the coolest it never gets too warm and I can use it on my lap all the times even encoding videos using the HandBrake application did not make it uncomfortably hot. However if I switch it to use the 9600M GPU it gets warmer even on regular use. It also runs very quiet the fans may be coming on but I never notice.

Initially there was a lot of furor over Apple's downgrade of the Serial-ATA interface speed (used to transfer data to and from the hard disk) to 1.5Gbps but Apple quickly restored the speeds to 3Gbps I do not however notice any difference with the 5400RPM hard disk.

About the display it is gorgeous and colors are vibrant. I had the opportunity to use a calibrated color profile to make it look even better. However I find the display to be a little too much reflective but I am coming from almost always using matte display so I figure it's a matter of getting used to it.

Apple's use of Mini DisplayPort is ahead of its time not many displays support it and so I had to buy a $30 DVI adapter not a big problem but Apple should at the very least re-start bundling the adapter with the Pro machines. Also, another USB port in lieu of the SD Card Reader would be quite welcome people can use the SD Card Reader for only SD Cards, but a USB port can be used for SD Cards as well as other peripherals.

That said, this generation is overall a very nice improvement the great battery life itself is enough to convince one to upgrade.

[ Edited to add some findings after extensive use ]

After using it for a few months, I find a handful of things moderately annoying about this laptop -

1) The positioning of USB ports both USB ports are on one side of the laptop and they are far too closely positioned to use both at once. For example I found I could not attach my Sandisk USB thumb drive and anything else at a time. And I don't have any irregular/unusual devices. They should really go back to having the ports on two sides or at least position them a bit more apart.

2) The Lid of the laptop is loose this was known to me before but I never thought it would become annoying. I don't routinely use the laptop in bed but whenever I do it's annoying.

3) The amount of RAM Apple advertises (4GB) is not actually entirely usable only 3.75GB is. So you lose 256Mb of RAM for the dual GPU.

Update 5/23/2012:

Still going strong, using this machine as a primary dev workstation for a full 3 years and 7 months. 3.5 years! Still going strong! I've since upgraded to 8GB RAM (new firmware update secretly enabled this new maximum, which, in my opinion, extends the useful life of the machine for another 2-3 years). Everything else is as normal. I've dropped the machine by accident once or twice, so it has a dent now. But the case held up great and there was no damage! It still looks good as new unless you search for where the dent was (I carefully banged it out with a hammer).

My next upgrade will obviously be a new MBP with probably no optical drive (who needs 'em with internet speeds as fast as they are these days?) and hopefully retina display. There's every reason to believe it will be as good as the last, but with more than double the processing power, a faster SSD and the incredible resolution main display. Can't wait!

Update April 2011:

Follow up over a year past my original review I've now owned the machine for 2 years and 5 months (give or take) and it's still going strong as it was on Day 1, if not stronger. I've upgraded the RAM to 6GB (maximum; I originally had 2x2GB=4GB, so I just found a good matched-speed 4GB DIMM to place along the existing 2GB, it works flawlessly). I upgraded the hard disk to 320GB/7200RPM somewhere in there (about to go to 640GB... for the same price as my 320 drive... incredible).

2 issues I've had: First, the power adapter slightly broke. Just the little hinge that allows you to wrap up the wire fell off, not a big deal but they replaced it immediately at the Apple store without question. 2nd issue: Battery started bulging, I noticed issues with my track pad not clicking (battery was pressing on it) and the bottom panel eventually wouldn't close. Popped it open and yep, just what I expected, bulgy battery. Apple store once again replaced immediately, no questions asked. (I do have 3 year Apple Care, I'm sure that's a factor, and turns out it was well worth it for the awesome support).

Overall this has still been the best computer/piece of tech I've owned thus far; impressed with every aspect of it hands down. I am so glad I invested in the Mac-and yes, I mean invested. It was worth every penny, and based on the fact that over 2 years later, this computer is still keeping up with the latest in performance and intensive usage, the resale value on this machine should contribute very well when I want to upgrade to my next MacBook Pro.

By all appearances, the latest MBP's are still the way to go. The Core i7 processors and improved graphics and battery life all within the same sturdy solid aluminum case can't be beat. Highly recommended from 2.5 years of experience.

(Original Review):

This machine is without a doubt the best computer, if not the best piece of technology gear, that I have ever used or owned.

Going to try to keep this review short, but sweet.

I've had it for about 9 months now, basically since the Unibody MBP's came out. First, the construction is just outstanding. The solidness of the enclosure makes the whole thing feel sturdy and basically indestructible. In 9 months, I have treated it like I treat all my equipment I use it thoroughly without too much concern for cosmetics and there is not a single scratch or sign of wear on the entire machine. The thing still looks new, after 9 months that's how durable it is. Incredible.

The speed and responsiveness and stability of the computer itself is excellent. I'm a programmer and photographer, so I take it to the max every time I use the computer, and I expect a lot of it. With 4 GB of RAM it's never sluggish and handles everything better than any computer I've ever owned.

Graphics and gaming performance is surprisingly good with the 2nd dedicated Nvidia 8600 video card. I dual boot to Windows XP (however reluctantly) and it works great.

I don't even need to talk about the software, hopefully you know all about it by now. OSX is truly awesome, especially for programmers. It's so refreshing to have a real operating system where you can pop open a real console and still have a nice graphical interface on top of it. The OS is a matched pair with the quality of the hardware.

In short, this is a seriously great machine. I'm no Mac fanboy I run Windows, Linux, Mac, whatever but I'm very impressed with the quality and especially the construction and build durability. It's honestly at a level above any other laptop, it's a pretty stunning difference. If it is more expensive, it will make up for it in longevity and resale value alone. Definitely worth it.

After installing a Trend Micro update and bricking my PC (which I was later able to remedy after 8+ hours of system restores and firewall modifications), I had enough and decided I was done with Microsoft. I have been using the Macbook Pro 15 for a little under a week, and so far, I'm pleased that I made the switch. Obviously, there's a pretty steep premium on Macbook Pros, so I'll try to cover the items that make it worth the extra coin, as well as some annoyances I've encountered as a first time Mac user.

Here are some benefits:

+ Beautiful 15" widescreen display. I'm coming from a 17" PC, and since the display was a bit more squared, I don't feel that the screen size decrease is too noticeable

+ Much lighter than PC. At 5.5 lbs, it's easier to carry around than similarly sized PC's

+ Super fast power up and power off. I would say it takes between 30-40 seconds to power on, and less than 10 seconds to shut downoutstanding

+ Robust battery life. It's rated at 7 hours. This time will vary depending on your usage, but it's about right if you don't jack the brightness and surf too heavily

+ Refined, gestured trackpad. If you want to scroll, just swipe with two fingersto select options or webpages, a single tap on the trackpad will accomplish this. Also nice is the ability to zoom webpages a la ipod touch/iphone pinching. I wish you could save a zoom setting to default on Safari though

+ No crashes, except for internet surfing (more on that later)

+ Love the preinstalled iPhoto application it comes with to view and edit photos

+ No problems with spyware, viruses, or crappy, obtrusive antispyware (i.e. Trend Micro) to combat it

+ Outstanding customer support (and I've used them a lot so far!)

And now for the not so good:

If you want word processing/spreadsheet functionality, you're pretty much stuck with plunking down $100 for Microsoft Office. You could use alternatives like iWork, but with most people using the Office standard, it makes sense for compatibility purposes. No generic preinstalled word processing software, Apple?

The learning curve (if you're a long-time PC user). The menus and interface that Macs use are pretty well laid out, but it's a pain to relearn where some items are. Example, you're in Mail and you'd like to add an email folder. The solution? Select "New Mailbox." I'm sure most PC users were scratching their heads with that solution

There's no "maximize" function on the windows. It will save your settings once you resize everything, but if you want a window to take up the screen, you'll be doing some manual dragging to get them the way you want

Not enough ports. Here's an example. Let's say you have a usb mouse, you're listening to iTunes from your iPod, and you're saving backup data to a USB drive as you're working in MS Word. Well, that's one too many usb apps, so you'll have to constantly unplug everything to accommodate your needs

No number pad. Now I realize this does not affect a large percentage of users, but I'm a finance guy, and work in Excel a lot. Not putting a number pad on the keyboard is reasonable, but what is not reasonable, is offering no first/third party solutions for a USB/Bluetooth numpad. Props to anyone that can find such an accessory

A bit tricky to port your iTunes media from PC to Mac. You'll be contacting support on this one, trust me

Too many extra charges from Apple. $350 for 3 years of support, $99 per year of storage backup. Considering what we're paying for Macbooks, you'd think Apple would cut us a break on some of the "extras"

Here's my biggest gripe. I have had SERIOUS stability issues with my Macbook and 2Wire DSL AT&T modem/router working together. I originally had a problem with Airport dropping my signal (fixed it with a Google search). Then, I had numerous problems with "Broadband Link Not Established Errors" from my 2Wire modem. Again, I was able to find a posting online which allowed my to turn 2Wire notification messages off, resolving this. So after numerous Google searches, and tech support from Apple and AT&T, my internet is pretty stable, but still not great. I'm still having issues where common websites will not load without stopping the request and clicking the reload button. Some users have had these stability issues resolved by purchasing the Airport Extreme Router, but at $179, this is not a cheap solution. I've had none of these internet problems running other devices from 2Wire. I'm not sure who is at fault, but my gut tells me that Apple did not go out of their way to make their Macbooks overly friendly with 2Wire's network. I feel like Apple should send me a partial rebate for all the hard research I've put in to get a stable connection

So is it worth it to switch to Mac? In a word, yes. Although they're certainly more expensive, 13" models are available at $1,200 which provide decent value. New Mac users will certainly notice an increased level of refinement and simplicity when they make the switch. Overall, a very nice laptop that would easily merit a 5 star rating, if not for the terrible 2Wire compatibility issues.

8/5/09 update:

My 2Wire modem continued to error out and reset itself while surfing webpages. The DSL and Internet lights would flash red, and my internet would disconnect for 20 seconds every time this happened. I finally found a solution to this problem. Not thrilled about the extra $89, but my internet experience is finally stable. The product I picked up is the D-Link ADSL2/2+ Modem/Wireless Router combo. I also reviewed this product on Amazon.

The D-Link is highly recommended for AT&T DSL users with Mac/2Wire compatibility issues.

I had an older version macbook pro but i dropped it with some force and it broke so i had to purchase a new computer. After having a mac for 1 1/2 years, it wasn't a question of what brand to buy but which mac to buy. I purchased the mac book pro 2.66 ghz with 4 gb ram--which is what i had in my last mac book pro. What i didn't realize is that this ram is the DDR3 instead of DDR2 which means it is suppose to be better and faster. i'm not a computer geek so i don't understand it all but basically having the 4gb in the old machine was still not as good as the 4 gb in this machine. Also, this machine has a much, much better track pad that does all kinds of tricks i'm just learning about. 2 finger swipes do one thing, 3 finger swipes do another, 4 finger swipes do yet another. and then you can also configure it to do the windows type double click think. The whole pad can be clicked on so you don't have to find a particular spot--anywhere will do. It does take some getting use to but it is so beneficial it is worth the learning curve.

I like the keyboard on this unibody macbook pro as compared to the old one but really don't know why--perhaps it is a perosnal preference. it is backlighted but so was my old one.

tech support at apple is superb, another reason i will never consider anything but apple. and if you have an apple store near you, you can get one to one personal training for a little less than $2 per week. in addition, they offer free classes to adults and children. you learn so much that you are finally able to take advantage of the features your computer can do without being a computer whiz.

the new version of the operating system, called snow leopard, will be out sometime in sept. if you buy a system now with the old version, you can upgrade with apple for $9.95.

the graphics card is very good in this machine, however, i am not much of a gamer so i don't really reap the benefits of that. but it is a dedicated card so it has great potential for those that would utilize it.

another awesome thing about this computer is that the bettery last 7 hours or so. at times, mine has lasted longer. it depends, i guess on what you are doing. and, even with the better battery, i think this computer weighs less.

if you are debating on whether or not to switch to apple, all i can say is that i am extremely grateful i did and so is everyone else i know that made the switch. one of the things i like, in addition to the ease of use of programs and the seemless integration is that there are no virus programs to run that slow the computer down tremendously. in addition, my old mac book pro ran as fast on the last day as the first and i am anticipating the same for this. unlike my windows laptops that got progressively slower as time went on. another great thing about apple is the seemless backup of files that it will do automatically for you. you don't have to figure anything out. jut let it do its job and if you ever lose all of your data, you will have a back up to restore your computer. That in itself can be worth tons of money. i know you can do this on windows machines, but it takes knowledge and effort--something i never seemed to posses when it came to computers.

one thing that i don't like is that the plug is hooked to the computer via a magnet. it is suppose to be safer so that it will unplug easily if someone snags it. that way it doesn't drag the computer to the floor. for me, i find it a little annoying because it can become unplugged easily. minor detail but it is a little irritating. if i could change one thing it would be that you have an option of which plug you wanted.

another thing that is different about the unibody macbook pros is that you can get a 13 inch with a full keyboard if you want. when i bought my last one, the 13 inch had a weird keyboard and as a typist, i couldn't even consider that size. i still chose the 15 inch because that is what i wanted, but now i can also purchase a 13 inch for my children rather than buying them the 15 inch.

one thing that the mac store employees recommended to me rather than getting a desktop was to get the 13 inch laptop for my kids and use my existing desktop monitor, hook up the lap top, add a keyboard and mouse if desired, and use that as a desktop. but you could always have the portability of a laptop if you ever needed it. i haven't done that yet, but that is going to be my next apple purchase.

It took me over a year to decide to switch to mac. It was a very tough decision for me. change is hard. i didn't know if i could do everything i wanted on the mac. i have never regretted it once. and if you are one of those rare users that has an application that can only be used in windows, you can use the program preloaded on the macbook pro or buy another program so that you can run your application--its like 2 computers in one. one caution, however, whatever portion of the computer you dedicate to windows is subject to viruses so you will have to run an antivirus on that portion. for me, i have found no need to use any windows application. and i even found that i work is much better than ms office in my opinion. but if you are partial to ms office, you can purchase a mac version.

Good luck with your decision and purchase. if you buy any of these macbook pros, you will be happy.

Want Apple MacBook Pro MB986LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop 2.8Ghz Discount?

First, let me say I'm an IT consultant and as such a bit of a computer snob. I build my own workstations and servers and know what's what and where things count. My previous laptop was a IBM Thinkpad T23 that was the most bulletproof computer I've ever owned. I dragged that thing around with me for 8+ years and it never gave me a single problem. However, it was just too slow to keep up with me and my need to run Adobe's creative suite and MS Office 2007. My expectations for a replacement were quite high and I set my sites on the MBP about a year ago and watched the specs slowly creep up to where I wanted them and of course waited for Snow Leopard to arrive. What finally sold me was VMWare Fusion, which allows you to run Windows as a virtual machine from within OS X. I know Bootcamp can boot Windows, but I wanted to work entirely within OS X as I don't have time to be rebooting and reopening things. This was a must-have both for the ability to run my huge investment in Windows software as well as run the various flavors of Windows needed to support my clients. The folks at the local Apple store showed me VMWare running and I placed my order the same day. I went for the matte screen and 500gb drive, both of which I am very glad I did. The glossy screen is gorgeous, but I was going to use this as a laptop not as a desktop replacement, meaning it would be going with me in all sorts of environments where I couldn't control the ambient lighting so glare was a huge concern. The matte screen isn't quite as sexy, but it is still the brightest LCD screen I have ever used. I turn the brightness down a couple clicks even when on AC power, just because it's so dang bright.

The performance of this laptop is amazing. I went with the 2.8 GHz CPU and as such got the dual video cards with maximum video RAM. I run at least a half dozen different programs at once, sometimes more, including Firefox with 20+ tabs and VMWare running a virtual machine of Windows 7 and this thing doesn't not even hiccup. Blazing, screaming, insanely fast. My MBP arrived 9 days ago and I have yet to reboot it once. The trackpad is sweet and the finger gestures are a great innovation. The battery is also amazing. I've given up on the dedicated video (see below) and am getting 6+ hours out of a charge, without any extreme power saving efforts. I'm carefully counting each cycle, as I'm sure a lot of other users are, and will happily scream and yell at Apple if this thing doesn't last 1000 cycles as promised.

Now for the Con's, although they are minor.

1. The dual video cards seem a bit gimmicky. Okay, I'm glad for the dedicated card when running Adobe CS4 apps, but really, I could live with the performance of the onboard card. The dedicated video card also sucks battery and heats the laptop up considerably, almost alarmingly hot. Running the onboard video there is almost no discernible heat. The biggest annoyance is that you have to close everything and log out every time you want to switch cards. Because of the heat and battery issue, I've found myself just living with the onboard video. It's not worth the hassle to log out and change it.

2. It's a BIG HONKING laptop, almost as big as the 17". If it was an inch narrower it would be the very definition of perfection. It barely fits in the laptop sleeve of my gigantic Patagonia Half Mass bag and it's girth makes it a little cumbersome and unwieldy to pick up and move around or use on one's lap. I would have happily gone for the 13" model if I could have gotten the same performance specs.

I sell and repair computers for a living and this is hands-down the best laptop on the market for my specific needs. While I paid a premium I feel it was a good value. Average users would do well with the MacBook or 13" MBP. Nothing in the PC laptop world even comes close. That being said, this review is specific to my needs for a laptop. A desktop is a completely different beast and my desktop workstation still runs Windows XP Pro.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 15.6" Notebook PC - 6272-55U

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 15.6' Notebook PC - 6272-55UI bought this laptop with hopes it would suit my small business needs when I travel.

Let's talk about the pro's first.

Pro's:

Keyboard is nice, has the numberpad and fingerprint scanner which I liked

The computer is very fast, with the i7 3632QM processor it never felt like it was trying, everything responded very quickly

Con's:

There are lots of con's I don't know where to begin.

On first start-up fresh out of the box, it crashed. I restarted the computer and tried installing updates and then it crashed again, upon start-up.

I contacted my seller Laptop Authority' and they walked me through how to fix this issue using a special software update from Microsoft. Once updated with this 'special' update the computer crashed less, I guess that was a good thing?

Anyway, the computer was unreliable when it came to overall system stability. I never knew when it was going to crash next.

It would always freeze when it went to sleep so I had to put my sleep mode to 'never' and just pray I had battery life while working.

It had problems connecting to the internet all the time, some places I go it would connect right away, other places that had WiFi (work offices) everyone else had their connection but mine would stay unconnected 90% of the time as it dipped in and out of connectivity, this was by far the most frustrating thing for me to handle. I had 3 IT personnel look at this issue and they were all baffled.

It was not a hardware issue because it would connect for a few seconds at a time, if it was hardware it would not connect at all.

The mouse trackpad was a pain in the butt, it was overly sensitive and difficult to use because it was like an on/off switch.

The sound quality wasn't the best, since I am on a Lenovo hating rampage right now I will add that little tidbit of disappointment.

I spent hours trying to diagnose all these little problems and in the end I was fed up and just returned it.

Laptop Authority was responsive to me and sympathetic for my frustration and I was issued a full refund in a timely manner, although I did have to pay shipping back to the supplier.

Overall, this computer left a sour taste in my mouth and I don't plan on going with Lenovo in the future.

I bought this laptop for my daughter. I-7 quad core processor, extremely fast and great at multitasking. She should make it all the way through college with this laptop. The crispness of the screen is amazing. It comes pre loaded with windows 7 and includes disks to upgrade to windows 8, though personally I have no intention of going to 8. Great laptop great price:-) I love the quality products that Lenovo makes!

I've never seen Windows boot up so fast seems like just a second or two!

Has pretty much everything I could want on it fingerprint reader, bluetooth, HDMI, quad processor, 6 gigs of memory .. Should last at least for a few years!

I gave 1 star for each of five reasons:

1)Fast shipping Arrived the very first day Amazon estimated

2)Price I was going to build a PC from scratch but found this laptop an excellent bargain with the parts I wanted

3)CPU speed This computer is lightning fast, and runs very cool.

4)Graphics/Gaming Epic visuals for movies and games. Powerful enough to play very demanding games without lag

5)Accessories Built in webcam right up above the monitor where it belongs. Fingerprint scanner is AWESOME. Rather than typing in passwords over and over you simply swipe a finger. You can set up multiple users, so I can save my own passwords to my fingerprint, while my brother can save his passwords to his fingerprint. You can even assign each finger a different website, so swiping that finger when on the desktop will open up that page. Built in wi-fi picks up great signal. The touch pad can be turned off just by double-tapping the corner, very handy if using a USB mouse. Clear sounding audio.

The only downside I can possibly think of is the case, a shiny metallic black, shows fingerprints if you touch it a lot. But those wipe off easy enough. Overall I'm extremely pleased with this buy. Definitely recommend it!

Want HP Pavilion dv6z Notebook PC With Blu-ray, 6GB DDR3 Memory, Quad-Core A6-3400M Accelerated Processo Discount?

I have been a long-time HP fan. I'm an IT tech and know my way around a computer. I am a Mac user now because of my job, but I like HP. I've owned an HP Pavilion DV6458se machine for the last 5 years, and it's a tank.Even with the Turion TL-60 dual core chip and Nvidia 6150 graphics and 2 GB RAM, it's quick. I upgraded to a 7200 RPM hard drive and it's even better. I used it for online school, so it was in use for hours and hours a day nonstop for 4 years. The parts that wore out were the keyboard, and I just replaced the hard drive, but it still runs great (the only glaring fault was it came with Vista...ugh).

Some friends of mine have this, and I got the chance to use it for a bit, and came away impressed. This is a very nice machine! The Dv6z Quad-Edition's whole chassis and screen lid are clad in brushed anodized aluminum that's a dark brown color that looks great. Lot's better than my MacBook Pro unibody which is very plain. It has a 15.6 inch LED-backlit screen with 1366x786 resolution (not quite HD) and a glossy surface (not matte or anti-glare). It has all current-tech, including the latest CPU from AMD with built-in (on chip) graphics processing unit (GPU). The A6-3400M Llano is a quad-core unit with 4MB of L2 cache that runs at 1.4 GHz and can throttle up to 2.3 GHz when CPU requirements increase with AMD's Turbo Core process similar to Intel's Turbo Boost. You get 6 GB DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 16), and a 640 GB 3 GB/s SATA II HDD. The integrated Radeon graphics also works very good. You can play some pretty graphics-demanding games on this like Skyrim or Diablo 3, or even Battlefield 2 on pretty high settings no problem. The hardware in this machine makes it faster and more powerful than my MacBook with has an onboard GPU and discrete GPU.

The battery is a 6-cell lithium ion cell that is supposed to last for 5 or 6 hours. You get a Lightstribe capable DVD supermulti drive that will burn read and write just about any silver discs and HD DVD and Bluray discs. Very nice.

Other goodies include Bluetooth, B/G/N Wifi, a webcam, mini HDMI port, 2 USB 3.0 ports, VGA D-sub out, biometrics fingerprint reader, and premium Beats Audio speakers with built-in subwoofer. The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, not the greatest OS, but fine for most users.

All this makes for a nice machine. It's pretty snappy thanks to the 6 GB RAM, and will handle just about anything you throw at it. The AMD chip does fall short of the Intel CPU's though. The Core i3 3rd Gen. is faster than this one when doing CPU intensive tasks, but unless you do a lot of audio or video encoding/decoding, image rendering in Photoshop (especially CS6 which is a graphics/CPU hog) it will be hard to notice.

The asthetics are nice. Gone are the blue-led's and in are the cool white ones, which I like better. The touchpad is multi-touch capable (pinch to zoom, rotate, flip, scroll) and has a cool glowing trim around it. The buttons are easy to press and don't require too much pressure, but enough to prevent them from being pushed accidentally. The keyboard has a nice feel to it and the keys are easy to press. It has a full 10-key pad to the right which adds to the width and offsets the touchpad, which I don't like. The biometrics works great and is easy to set up. You can program in multiple users for each user account on the machine as well, which is nice. Despite being Beats Audio, the speakers aren't fantastic like I expected. The onboard sound is nice though, even when hooked up to cheap speakers. The sound is nice a loud, but muffled at times and don't produce the sharp highs of some music. I am sure you can compensate for that with a media player that has a equalizer.

I'd give this 5 stars if it weren't for some things...First it's expensive. For almost $800-$900 you can get a superior laptop with better specs (maybe not as pretty), faster CPU, more RAM, bigger faster hard drive (even an SSD) and 17 inch HD screen. You can get it on sale though, but here it's to much. Second, the screen is good, but not great for a machine like this. I was expecting a dazzling screen but didn't get one. Third, and not really a fault of the machine itself, is it came absolutely loaded with HP-branded bloatware that will probably never get used and is hard to get rid of without possibly breaking things in the OS. You'd almost need an IT tech to clean it up. The hard drive is "only" 640 GB and 5400 RPM, and while that's a lot, it would be nice to have a faster hard drive with more storage especially if this is used for movies, games, or other media. Lastly, maybe my preference, but there's no backlighting for the keyboard.

Other than that, I really like it. The battery does last for quite a while, but plan on 4 hours or less when using it for movies or games.

So...

Pro's

Well-built, good-looking aluminum cladding

Latest AMD CPU

6 GB fast RAM upgradeable to 16

Beats Audio sound

Good battery life

Snappy performance

Can play the latest graphics demanding games great

Con's

Expensive at retail

Screen is not HD or anti-glare

Hard drive could be bigger

No backlit keyboard

Loaded with annoying bloatware

So that's the Dv6z. I like it a lot but I don't love it. I'm an IT professional and appreciate a nice machine, and this one fits the bill. If it were cheaper, I'd rate it higher, but HP shouldn't put a Quad-Edition brand on it and charge an extra $200 for it. I give it my recommendation, but there are better machines out there for the same price, or even cheaper. If you don't mind the price, or can get it on sale (I've seen them for under $700), grab it. It's a competent performer (not an i7 or i5 though) in a field littered with Ivy and Sandy-bridged machines!

Toshiba Satellite 3D Laptop / Intel Core i5 / BLU-RAY DRIVE / 15.6" 3D-ready Display / 6GB RAM / 64

Toshiba Satellite 3D Laptop / Intel Core i5 / BLU-RAY DRIVE / 15.6' 3D-ready Display / 6GB RAM / 640GB HARD DRIVE - SlateOkay, I'm prejudiced. I love Toshibas. This is an especially nice machine and was at a great price. I don't plan on using the 3-D feature, but the standard specs for everything else are very nice. 0Great screen, nice keyboard touch, all the ports you could ask for, and a processor good enough for some serious statistics applications. My family is comprised of computer junkies, so we buy one or two laptops a year and keep older ones around as backups. I also buy and help maintain computers for friends. I've tried most brands that build for microsoft, but have had the best luck with Toshibas. I also like Lenovo, Samsung, and Asus machines, but Toshibas remain my strong preference unless someone else is offering a deal too good to refuse. If you keep your eye out for sales. Toshibas are very price competitive. To me they always seem to have an edge on the other brands in the same price range, whether it is a nicer screen, a nicer touch to the keyboard, or just more stuff for the money. All the ones we own have been impressively reliable. Some brands that shall go unmentioned have been less so.

Great sound quality, very nice 3D, Blu-ray player.

It has preformed great so far! Also, it's amazing at this price.

ASUS K55A-XH51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

ASUS K55A-XH51 15.6-Inch LaptopI received this afternoon. Perfect condition. By the way you will receive this with Windows 7 Pro not windows 8 as pictured. In the write up it says Windows 7 professional but shows picture of computer with windows 8 on it. I did not want the 8 and this is the reason I bought it before it was sold out. I hooked up to my wired network downloaded Nortonthen downloaded all my windows 7 updates , changed it to internet explorer 10 and even hooked it up to my Epson wireless printer. It was perfect effortlessly with no error messages at all. Extremely fast browsing downloaded pictures and videos from old computer using usb flash drive to this computer. Perfect. Very quiet computer. You can barely hear it . Sound is good. So happy I bought this . I am just a housewife. No computer expert at all. This computer walks you through it. With the windows 7pro it is easy to add another computer to your home network. Excellent screen resolution. Watched a movie on line. HD clarity. This met more than my expectations!

After multiple bad experiences with HP laptops, I vowed never again. Have now purchased my 3rd Asus laptop this year one for me, one for the wife and one for the kids. The last 2 have both been the model listed here, although unfortunately from another vendor (Newegg) where I ended up paying $50 more per unit than current Amazon price.

I really like Asus laptops and have found them easy to setup/use and very reliable. I noticed one reviewer complaining about the touchpad sensitivity, which perhaps results from that person not having adjusted the touchpad settings to his/her personal preference. I also found the factory default touchpad settings a bit hyper, but it was very simple to adjust settings.

This laptop has a maximum memory of 8GB with 2 memory slots, one of which comes empty from factory, so I also purchased a 4GB memory upgrade for this laptop (approx $40). Product ordered was: Kingston 4GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 Laptop Memory Model KVR16S11/4; works great!

I, like others, tried out Windows 8 on demo laptops at local retailers (only Windows they had available) and really hated it. So I was happy to find this laptop still available with Windows 7.

If you are put off by fingerprints on exterior, it is worth mentioning that the top of this unit is not the fingerprint-hiding textured surface as depicted in photos, instead it is a typical smooth surface. No big deal for me.

I have had this machine a little more than 2 weeks. From the beginning, there have been start-up and shut down failures. Asus has guided me through multiple hard resets and BIOS resets and now says I probably have a virus. One of the first things I did when I turned on the machine was to install and update Kaspersky. Kaspersky has never found a virus, trojan, network attack, etc., etc., etc. The resets are now a daily occurrence. I told the support fellow that the Windows 7 backup fails after the first DVD, but they are "not able to help with backup." If I had purchased this laptop from BEST BUY, I could simply walk in and exchange it within 30 days---with no questions asked. Amazon wants a 15% restocking charge to restock a defective laptop. I rely on Amazon as my first option for many items, both business and personal, but never again will I buy a laptop from Amazon.

Title says it all. I need a reliable machine and this is not it.

Everything feels cheap about this laptop. Keys, hypersensitive cursor, feel of plastic God knows what's inside.

After one day (and the expense of downloading Office), the machine has totally frozen up. I can't even force shut-down.

I try to get Asus tech support and they're nearly impossible to contact. I finally sent a note to them after their online 'chat' prompt said they'd be right with me and thanking me for my patience....for 45 minutes. The response to the note said they'd be back in touch in 48 hours.

ACER V5-471-6569 14' NotebookI have never bought electronic through the internet in the past. I was even more skeptical because it was refurbished. I extremely pleased with the performance and value.

Bought as a school laptop for our son. This laptop gets used on a daily basis by a 10 year old so it does get some abuse but has worked wonderfully.

Asus - 14" Laptop - 8GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Black Model Q400A-BHI7N03

Asus - 14' Laptop - 8GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Black Model Q400A-BHI7N03From what I can find out this was a laptop designed by Asus for Best Buy. It is hard to find it on Asus website although they do have the drivers available. I checked it out at Best Buy where I had gone to look at another brand. The feel of the keyboard and the monitor clarity won me over. I bought this to replace a dying laptop and it was my first experience with Windows 8 (I did try the beta but wasn't impressed). I didn't want a touch screen but I did want the memory and hard drive size. I was a bit concerned about the lack of an SSD drive but I haven't seen any speed issues that would make me sorry that feature wasn't included.

Pros: It is fast to start up, VERY fast. I have several Windows 7 computers (laptops, desktops, tablet.) It smokes them for speed when it comes to loading the operating system. It will also go to sleep and come out of it instantly with no hang ups. Response to loading programs, closing them etc. is exceptional. Battery life seems to be running over 5 hours which is what I expected.

Cons: A very few minor issues that I can live with but might not work well for someone else: Lighted keyboard I want a lit keyboard and it has one but it is very hard to make out the letters when they are lit so I ended up turning that feature off.

Touch pad Sometimes it can be unresponsive. It almost acts like it isn't getting a firm enough touch or drag from my finger. I put a wireless mouse on it and that works great. It can be frustrating trying to get the pad to respond. Since I have had several touch pads on laptops in the past I feel qualified to say it is not it's best feature.

Overall I love the laptop and would purchase an Asus again.

I got one from a Best Buy online sale for a very reasonable price. It is fast, light, sleek, and beautiful. I love this laptop.

Pros:

Performance: With the 3rd Generation Core i7 processor and 8 GB RAM this computer is a real performer. It is fast, quiet, and ice-cool!

Weight: At 4.2 lbs this computer is not the lightest but it is quite portable. With this configuration, if you are expecting some real performance then please don't go for the ultra-portables. They are just joke! This computer is no joke. It's meant for serious computation.

Screen: The screen is extremely bright and vivid in colors. The matte screen ensures that you get to see the video, and not your own face. I hate those glossy screens because of self reflection. But this one with its matte screen simply is great!

Keyboard: Backlit, chicklet keyboard. What I like about this keyboard is that the keys are very large and well spaced. The best thing I liked about the keyboard is that it has separate Home and End buttons. One important factor is the up/down scroll buttons. They are separate and nicely spaced unlike some other laptops in which these are so tiny that you end up pressing one in stead of the other!

Some people have complained about the silver color keys which absorb the back-lit effect. It is true to some extent. However, if you are typing in the well-lit environment, turning off the back-lit makes this better. And if you are in a low light condition, then the back-lit does help!

Speaker: Very loud and clear sound.

It has DVD drive. So unlike other lightweight laptops, you are not handicapped with this one.

Overall, it's a power packed compact laptop. I recommend it for anyone.

I am an apple person but I wanted to buy a decent laptop as an alternative at home since some of my work software only works with windows and I have to say this laptop is great for the price I paid. The screen is great, performance is great and the hardware seems ok. Obviously it's not a macbook and all but it also cost me a fourth of a macbook and the casing it black metal so I am pretty happy with it.

Great product, except no support to run windows 7. Drivers supported by manufacturer only for windows 7. Everything else is great, especially the design of the exterior.

Please please do your research before you buy this computer. There are plenty of other options!

I bought this computer as my main laptop after my last laptop fried. Right off the bat the quality of the materials are AMAZING, the keyboard the looks are great. However the god awful sound quality is too ridiculous. If you like musics and plan on using it to play music, then you have the wrong laptop. The sound kinda reminds you of a 90's gameboy. Not only is the quality terrible but its not loud at all.

After about 5 days of usage, the laptop began crashing frequently, especially when plugging an external USB drive and USB cable for a printer in.

OVerall, the laptop has great specs but the speakers truly ruin this laptop.

IN the end, I eneded up returning this laptop and I bought a used Asus N56 for about $730 and man am I glad I made that decision!

Over $600 for a 1Gb, Linux 9" netbook? My goodness, I can find the same specs for around $250. I guess fools with money will always find a way to flow their wad...I guess this would be one way.

I purchased a Mini 9, black obsidian color, with 1.6 Ghz Atom processor, 16 GB solid state drive, 1 GB memory, external portable CD/DVD-RW, integrated webcam, GMA 950, wireless 802.11g, and Windows XP. This netbook boots up Windows XP very swiftly, plays NetFlix movies via wireless/DSL without a single screen blip or stutter, sound is quite good (headphones best when watching a movie or listing to music, very good stereo sound, and the built in speakers are adequate for regular browsing). DVDs and other media play excellently as well. My Firefox browser can be viewed full screen, and screen quality is good and easy on the eyes (very crisp and clear, good color). With a 4 GB Sandisk card I have 20 GB of disk space in total, which is more than enough for portability on vacation, to school, to the beach, the airport or on a plane, wherever I just need connection but don't need all the major attributes of a desktop system or bulky heavy 15 inch laptop. The battery lasts me 3 hours with my screen brightness down to mid level before my battery-low alarm sounds, and the battery charges very swiftly. The power cord is very lightweight and not bulky. I'm glad I made this purchase.
