I've been an owner for about 3 months now and I can tell you I am pretty impressed with this notebook.

Make no mistake, you pay for what you get.

This is for someone that is always on the go and do not want to buy a crappy netbook because the Z series is extremely light. The beauty is in the fact that this is also for someone who wants good processing power and video card performace. I was able to play Counter Strike with full 100 fps and tf2 in medium setting with 40+ fps (with the dedicated graphics card), wich is pretty amazing for a notebook that is this thin. Technology like Intel's Centrino 2 and the fact that you can change from discrete to integrated graphic card (with functions perfectly, by the way) makes it possible to use it, on the go, for six hours straight. I made this test with the standard baterry and the baterry life is awesome.

Some other things like integrated 3G and GPS receiver and the VAIO Care software, that from time to time does a full verification of your notebook and actualy makes it faster by cleaning useless files and the registry, makes this notebook simply perfect.

I purchased a vaio vpc-z computer two years ago. The first machine would spontaneously reboot every 2-3 weeks. The first onsite repair left the machine unable to start. Over the next year the machine was returned 4-5 times. Turnaround was very slow taking weeks to months. Sony finally bought the computer back. Foolishly I bought another. It has functioned better but the screen developed black lines several months ago. I was traveling and wasn't in a location for onsite repair. In view of the weeks required for a factory mail in repair, I called and asked if onsite repair would be ok in a month... which was shortly into the extended warranty. I was assured onsite would be acceptable. Two days ago Sony set up an onsite repair. Today Sony calls and adamantly refuses onsite repair. Not only is tech support incompetant but now it appears that one cannot rely on their committment. Be very careful with any verbal promise. The computer is OK but Sony service is simply nothing short of disaster.

Don't be fooled, while the MacBook Pros may have they're aluminum unibody these VAIOs have carbon fiber. Sure it looks like plastic from afar, but once your close and feel the weight and feel of this thing, it's going to blow you away.

It's amazing how much they crammed into this little laptop! You've got two graphic cards and a core 2 duo processor (not some ULV or whatnot), Sony really seems to know quite a bit of technical engineering. The price is not for anybody, but those looking a topnotch, beautiful and svelte laptop that handles everything won't be disappointed.

1 star down for the price of course. I would have given it 5 if it were in the $1500 range.

Love this laptop. It's made really solid, and I've been using it for the past few years without any glitches. It's one of the few machines that come with an anti-glare screen, and it's very lightweight, only 3.3 pounds. This is one of my favorite machines--very easy to do wipes until I upgraded my hard drive to a 1TB and had it cloned. It then started spitting out Microsoft error messages "Not running Genuine Windows." Microsoft support will send you back to the manufacturer. The lesson learned: always reload the OS from the manufacturer recovery disks.

Unfortunately, Sony no longer makes the Z series. The new Ultrabooks are appealing, but the Solid State Drive are way too small yet. Also many laptops don't have optical drives, or a LAN port for heavy downloads. They only come wireless with machines running Windows 8, which may not work well for heavy computing. I'm also eyeing the Sony Duo (laptop & Tablet combo)--such a beauty.

I purchased this notebook 10 months ago and was pretty happy with it until the hard drive just died in the middle of doing nothing. It was still under warranty so I called for repair. Spoke to Ritz and told him my hard drive is dead, he felt the need to waste about 30 min. of my time to arrive to a conclusion that my hard drive is dead. I was leaving country but he could not expedite my repair so I got transferred to JR who spent about 15 min. repeating what Ritz told me. Than I spoke to Lee who gave me his direct phone # and told me he would personally see to it that I get the computer repaired in time for my trip. All lies. Called again and spoke to Woo no help at all. Transferred to Megan, who proceeded to tell me Sony could not have a hard drive sent overnight or help me in any way and there was no one at Sony willing or able to do it. Every one of those people were located outside of United States. They all told me it would take 4 to 6 business days to repair, it did not happen. Not even sure it would happen. My next notebook will not be a Sony.

HP DV6833 15.4 in Laptop

I love this laptop. It's awesome. I had only one problem with it when I originally bought it and that was the battery life. It only lasted for 40 mins. I eventually bought an extended battery and everything was fine. A year later, I'm starting to notice that this laptop has backlight issues. The screen will go completely dark in the middle of usage or during startup. I paid over a thousand dollars for the laptop as well as virus protection and warranty. The warranty doesn't really help now that Circuit City is defunct. I used to rant ans rave about how awesome HP is, but after this one bights the dust I'm probably going to invest in Dell although I'm not too fond of their products either.

DELL LATITUDE C640 2.0GHZ 512MB 20GB DVD WIFI XP PRO LAPTOP

The dell computer I recieved was in very good condition although it has a minor scratch it is nothing to be upset about. With my initial order my restore CD was not included and the power cord had a small short..but I must say I would definately purchase from this company again, They quickly resolved any issues I had they even expressed me a new power cord and my restore cd to make it right..Again definately I would recommend purchasing from this company again.

The laptop was purchased for only one reason to run the DryFire USA Trap program. The unit works really good. Because it is a reconditioned unit, I found that the battery would not fully recharge. Bought a new battery from batteries&butter for $64.00. It is a top notch unit now. This should be the only problem that you should have.

It was delivered before the time indicated by UPS. Oh yes, you do not get a manual with the unit, but you can download the manual at the Dell site.

Lenovo G570 4334EEU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Lenovo has a serious problem with the hinges on these laptops breaking because the screws fall out of the bottom. They will charge you to fix it and you must pay for shipping, then you will wait at least 30 days for parts from china! Just google Lenovo G570 hinge problem and you can read all the horror stories. They only cover hinges under warranty for 90 days on these lesser expensive laptops. Need to stick with HP, Asus, or Gateway for real warranty service. Sad times for Lenovo.

I recently purchased this Lenovo to replace my old Dell desktop, and I have not regretted my decision. It's a great mid-level laptop that accomplishes as much and more then I wanted.

I bought this laptop as a present for my step-dad as he was getting a new job in Australia and he had to leave his desktop behind. This computer is a great desktop replacement if you don't plan on playing games or any graphic intensive work. It, like all laptops now adays come with at least 10gb of bloatware which is just a bummer. I uninstalled all of that 'crap' but I left the boot manager on there to see if it would have any improvement. Before I upgraded the 500gb HDD into an SSD I was geting around 100 second boot up times and they were quite constant. After upgrading the RAM to 8gb that dropped to about 90 seconds on average boot up time. But with the SSD I now have an average of 20 seconds and less that 15 seconds shut down time. This computer, with the SSD upgrade Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2 makes the perfect computer for someone with low patience, need for speed, doesn't play games and it streams videos crystal clear in its HD (not full HD, but 768p none the less) screen. The Macbook Pro has just been updated on April 13th 2010. There are some upgrades and a few changes between this year and last years model, detailed below.

UPGRADES

1) The MBP 13 now has 4 gb of ram standard (2 x 2 gb sticks). This allows you to multi-task easily without any issues ( last years model had only 2gb of ram which was inadequate) Now there's no need to spend more money upgrading your ram UNLESS you're really into heavy duty multimedia work

The lack of the latest Intel Core i5 or i3 processors processors in this machine is disappointing ( Anybody paying $1200 for a notebook positioned as a pro product, would expect new rather than "old" processors to be part of the configuration ) but I'd still recommended the MBP 13 to people looking to buy the lightest and most portable Macbook Pro as well as a capable machine in it's own right. Demanding applications like Skype, Photoshop, Lightroom, iMovie run smoothly.

I would also consider purchasing applecare AppleCare Protection Plan MC258LL/A For Portable Apple Computers 13.3 Inches and Below along with the notebook.

The truth is, Apple uses most of the same parts (hard drives, processors, dvd drives, wireless cards) that other laptop manufacturers use so their reliability is no worse or better than other laptop manufacturers. Unfortunately what most customers don't know is that if a product / part malfunction occurs after the first year limited warranty has ended, Apple charges extremely high fees for repairing and replacing parts (when compared to other laptop manufacturers ) IF you don't have Applecare.

Keep in mind, the A.P.P. only covers hardware failure not accidental damage so it's still expensive for what you get but it's better than paying Apple's prices for repair/replacement parts.

Another warranty extension option to consider is Squaretrade (which also includes damage protection). It's better to pay once for Applecare or Squaretrade (whatever you prefer) and be covered for 2 more years after the first year is up than pay exorbitant repair/replacement fees if a part malfunctions.

About the battery, Apple advertises it as lasting for 9 to 10 hours of use. In reality, it allows you to be mobile for 3 to 6 hours depending on what task you're using the computer for. Also, it's an inbuilt battery so once it's exhausted, you will have to take your machine back to an Apple store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for replacement. However, Apple states that the battery will hold 80% of it's charge for up to a 1000 charges which means approximately 3 to 4 years of daily use. So it should be a while before you have to go in for that battery replacement.

Also, Since the MBP has a mini display port, you'll have to buy a MiniDP to VGA convertor or MiniDP to DVI convertor if you ever want to connect your MB Pro to a larger monitor since Apple does not include it with the machine it will cost you $30 more IF you buy it from Apple. Here's a cheaper option Mini DisplayPort to DVI Female Adapter Cable for Apple Macbook, Macbook Pro, iMac, Macbook Air, Mac Mini Laptop

For those who are confused about whether they should purchase the $1199 MBP 13 or the $1499 MBP 13 the only difference between this model and the higher priced model is processor speed and hard drive space the $1199 MBP 13 has a 2.4 ghz processor and 250 gb hard drive and the $1499 MBP 13 has a 2.66ghz processor and 320 gb hard drive. Whether a 266 mhz (10% difference) and 70 gb more of hard drive space is worth 300 dollars more is your call. (Although you can purchase a 500 gb notebook hard drive for approximately $80 and install it yourself. Instructions are in the MBP 13 manual and you'll need a Philips #00 screwdriver. Installation videos are also available online)

UPDATE The MBP has a good quality screen but I have to add that it may not be for everybody. Online reports on Apple's MB Pro support forums and personal experience indicate that the glossy LED screen causes tremendous eye strain and headaches for some people. A few users have said that they cannot use the computer for more than an hour at a time because of the eye strain and headaches.

Mine and other's issues with the screen are individual cases but the possibility does exist that the screen may not suit you and cause eye strain and other health issues. At the same time, you may not face any of these issues. My advice would be to use the MB Pro as a notebook extensively within the fourteen day return window and if you face any of these issues, do not hesitate to return it. If you do not face any of these issues, then please enjoy using your MB Pro.

This is my umpteenth Mac and as usual, it's a very satisfying purchase. Although the styling of this laptop, with the dark hinge and keyboard isn't quite my cup of tea (and is a matter of taste), this machine is far and away the most solidly built. It feels like it would stop a bullet, and it probably could. It's reassuring rigidity gives it a feeling of quality and sturdiness second to none. For someone who man handles his laptop all day every day, this is very important.

To be seen over the next months and years is if the reliability of the machine is as good as its build quality.

One final, off-topic note on delivery: Amazon service has been excellent. Yes, their systems are not perfect, but their customer service has made up for it. I originally got an inexplicable delivery date, but a call fixed that.

i just picked one of these up and I love it. I have read reviews complaining that Apple did not try to cram an i5 or larger CPU into this 13 inch machine. True, the chose to use the Core 2 Duo but that's not all bad. This is a stable, cool running, capable processor. The machine now includes 4 G of ram and a much improved video card from the previous version. I use this mostly for work where stability, battery life, portability, and longevity are the most important things to me. I rarely play games. I wouldn't use a portable for video work when I have a desktop available. I run office applications, safari, email, ever note, and skype. It all works great. The machine feels substantial in my hands. Pick it up and try to twist it. It is perfectly rigid. My Toshiba feels like the battery would fall out if I twisted a bit more. This one feels well built. I especially like the backlit keyboard.

I never write reviews. NEVER. But this is something that just has to be reviewed because everyone should have one of these. It's a little long but I feel that this has to be said. If I can't convince you, go to the store and mess around with one if you'd like. Better yet, read all the reviews. They all can't be wrong.

I've been a windows user for all my life. The experience has been great all the way through XP. With all the negativity surrounding Vista, I decided not to persue it. I've had relatively little problems with windows honestly except dealing with all the problems I deal with on a daily basis (Help Desk Tech). If there's anything that I feel like touching least when I come home, it was my XP machine.

Why did I go Mac? I've seen the hundreds of things that can go wrong with Windows. I've heard all the complaints about Vista. Haven't played much with 7 but just messing around with it @ Best Buy I thought, "Yea maybe it's better than Vista but it's pretty much the SAME OLD WINDOWS when it comes down to it." I'm deploying soon and I had a 17" Dell Inspirion 1705 Windows XP machine (See how long that is? I am happy to say that when someone asks me what I'm rollin with, I reply, "13-inch MacBook Pro" A lot shorter but that's besides the point). Anyways, the screen is HUGE and there was no way I'm taking that tank with me over there. WAY to heavy and WAY to bulky! So I was in the market for a Laptop that was at most 14". When it comes to electronics, I research a ton.

What was the first thing I typed up when I was looking for a new PC?

"What is the best brand of laptops (Windows)?"

Yea that didn't help any. I got "HP is the best!" Then I got "HP is the worse!" So it was a lot of mixed reviews for mostly all of them. So I thought that I'd venture into Mac since I've never owned one. Went to the site and it gave me 2 options: Macbook and Macbook Pro. I opted for the Macbook Pro because 1) I wanted 4GB of RAM (I read it just works better all around) and 2) I wanted an SD slot. There are other reasons why Macbook Pro is nicer but I'll get into that later.

What was my only doubt before buying Mac? What if I need Office? Well there's bootcamp. I'll tell you what, so far I've had no use for Windows yet (waiting to see how Office for Mac 2011 is before I decide). So I did it and let me tell you, I've never had more fun messing with a computer than I've had with my Mac. Ok enough ranting, what do I like? What don't I like?

Pros:

+Great designA reason to get Macbook Pro over Macbook: the construction. All PCs=Plastic

+OS is so easyNavigating through my files couldn't be easier. No more "Well that file is in c:\windows\localprofile\temp\settings\...ETC" It's all simple to find (It also helps using Spotlight)

+Dashboard and ExposeWidgets + Easy way to find what you have open = FUN

+iLifeBottom like, iPhoto and iMovie BLOW AWAY windows standard photoviewer and windows movie maker (garbage, cheap)

+ The touchpadIt's more than just being big, it's amazing. The gestures make the experience so much easier and fun. Want to scroll down? Place to fingers on the pad and swipe down. There are others but hard to explain ;)

+ It's just flat out fun to useWindows just started getting dull for me. Mac is fresh and exciting. When you buy a car do you want to get a transportation (PC) or do you want to get something that you enjoy driving (MAC)? I enjoy driving Mac everyday.

Cons:

Adjusting: It's difficult adjusting using windows all my life. But apple has set up many videos online to help you along. Thanks!

The little things I was used to: again goes back to adjusting to a new OS. Alt+F4 is now Command+W. Gotta get used to it. No biggie.

Honestly, maybe I'm being biased (sue me) but I can't find a lot of cons yet as I'm still very new to this.

Bottom Line: You want a mac. Start a new adventure in your life. It's not too late. Mac will make your life easier in ways you couldn't imagine.

This is my fourth Mac and they keep getting better.I had some reservations about the glossy screen and even though it does reflect it works and works very well.I loved the matte screen but this has taken little time to accept and get used to.

Now,the track pad and this is impressive in that it is not a gimmick and eliminates so much clicking and dragging and fishing around for back buttons and the like.And all done with subtle gestures on the good sized trackpad.Be sure to activate the tap to click function so you can use this subtle method to click or secondary click or drag with one finger.No need to go up for a back button to go back page-just swipe three fingers.Desktop and expose can be activated by vertical swipes,etc.It even has a lighted keyboard for a poor typer like myself.

The case is of course milled from a solid piece of aluminum and along with the Mac OS this is a thing of beauty.Apple is to computers what Leica is to cameras so even though I never got that Leica I do have this Macbook Pro in my hand right now.Treat yourself if you can.

Dell Studio XPS 9100

I bought a Dell Studio XPS 9100 with the intent of using it as just a part-time home workstation. When I ordered the system from Dell, the tech staff were friendly and the salespeople were knowledgeable. Once I set up the computer at home, however, I found that it could handle multiple games running at the same time, streaming, movies, all without lag or freezing up. Not your typical computer! I had Windows 7 Pro installed and have not have an issue. I called tech support and then sales six months after I bought the machine to purchase more memory for it. Their accents were heavy but I understood everyone well, and again, friendly and knowledgeable staff members.

Dell can be a hit-or-miss company these days, but this computer system and the support I have had for it are a definite hit. I would recommend this awesome machine to anyone. Lightning fast, quiet, room for expansion, and stunning graphics.

I purchased this directly from Dell 1yr ago. This is a good computer however, Dells customer service is horrible. Most of the time you cant understand what their technicians are saying. There is a serious language barrier. Called them about a minor software issue. They hounded me about getting a software contract to cover the problem. All they do is hound you when you call in for service to buy extended warranty. Don't buy this if you are looking for good technical support otherwise the computer is a decent machine.......

ASUS G73SW-XA1 Republic of Gamers 17.3-Inch Gaming Laptop (Black)

Just received this laptop. It does NOT come with a backpack or a mouse (it was written that backpack and mouse are included in G73SW-XA1 on Amazon's product page, but this text was later removed). :-(

The material quality is great. Feels sturdy. Quite heavy, as expected.

Screen is glossy and has 1920*1080 resolution.

Windows experience index details are:

Primary hard disk 5.9

Computer has 8GB of 1333Mhz RAM (4x 2GB), so it'll be expensive to upgrade RAM to 12GB(2*2 + 4*2) or 16GB(4*4) (since there are no extra free slots and you'll have to throw away existing RAM).

There is an empty 2.5" HDD compartment where I'm planning to install OCZ Technology 120 GB Vertex 2 Series SATA II 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive (SSD) OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G (I like the 750GB HDD + 120GB SSD configuration better than 500GB HDD + 500GB HDD).

Hard disk comes partitioned 174GB in C:\ and 502GB in D:\. Lots of stuff that I had to deinstall. The disk is Seagate ST9750420AS.

DVD writer drive is Matshita UJ8A0ASW (supports burning to Dual Layer 8.5GB DVD+R DL). WiFi is Atheros AR9285. Bluetooth is Broadcom BT-270.

For those of you who have heard about the Intel Sandy Bridge problem yes, it does have "New revision. Certified design" sticker.

Also has "NVidia 3DTVPLAY" sticker, so it should be possible to connect laptop to a 3D-capable TV or projector via HDMI.

Overall, I highly recommend this laptop.

my last gaming notebook, was an alienware area 51M, made when alienware was not owned by dell and before dell messed up a great gaming notebook maker.

I needed a newer notebook as that and my 4 yr old toshiba were long in the tooth. I was not looking for a gaming notebook, but as this is not much more money for a gaming notebook. Now this notebook is huge, view it as a desktop replacement. Asus has also improved and not having a ton of bloatware. It is pretty much remove from box, remove wrappers, place battery inside, and fire it up and get to work. I love the layout of it. awesome keyboard, straight forward approach.

It runs quiet, and doesnt require fiddling with the setup, such a relief these days.

If the P4 extreme alienware area 51m, was not a dead give away... I'm and old gamer. I was playing crush crumble and chomp and soldering 6502 microprocessors, when many of you were not even born lol.

I love how the hard drive is setup with the partitions that make sense. Just be sure and setup your games on the 500gb partition and installing them there.

All the normal issues with new computers I have not seen here. The manual is crap on real geeky useful information, but whose isnt these days. The designers think we are all idiots, which is mostly true, but give me useful info.. took me awhile to figure out which hdmi cable I need to hook this up to my 55in samsung.

So, If you are in the need for a decent gaming notebook, and are not worried about size, weight, or battery life.

You know who you are when you buy a 17in notebook which is a desktop replacement, and then post a 1 star review complaining about how heavy it is, blah blah.

THIS IS A DESKTOP REPLACEMENT GAMING NOTEBOOK!

it weighs in at 8 pounds, it wont fit on the drop drown tray on the airplane unless you wedge it and halfway thru your lost season 3 dvd the battery will die anyway.

I am quite pleased with it as I transfer my games to this. Just buy it and you will be happy.

I think that it goes without saying that this laptop gives you the most bang for the buck. I am not so much the PC gamer but I use applications which weigh heavily on the graphics card and processor. So far this laptop has been able to handle everything I can throw at it.

The cons although annoying are not in any way deal breakers, this is a solid laptop with screaming performance from a great company. You will not find a better laptop for the price. 4 stars on this review, lost 1 star mainly for the sound card and bloatware. Amazon should make good on the backpack on mouse, those who rated the product 1 star because they did not get them should think about reviewing the laptop and not Amazon.

the specs and value of this machine is very nice. after i accidentally spilled soda on my HP HDX18 laptop (twice...), i decided to get a real gaming notebook. the Asus G73JW was the best value on paper compared to any other machine I could find out there (Toshiba Qosimo, Alienware, Sager, etc).

the Good:

video card = very nice (Nvidia 460M see notebookcheckdotcom for the specs and ratings)

runs very cool = I was very impressed by the overall cooling system. found a review that measured all the temperatures on the keyboard as well as vents in the back. compared to my HP, this was very comfortable and never got hot or even very warm under my hands when typing. never realized how warm my HP was until i started using this.

the OK:

most everything else is good enough. memory, hard drive, screen (although, i miss the 18.4" HP screen which was very nice. the 17" looks dinky when you get used to the 18" especially at the 1920x1080 resolution).

the Bad:

sound is poor.

keyboard = chiclet style keys which i don't like (but, this is a personal preference).

the Kicker:

when i first got it, it would freeze up occasionally. not often enough for it to be consistent, but enough to be kind of irksome. did the updates, etc, and it seemed pretty stable. after 4 months of use, it died. wouldn't boot at all. tech support was kind of a hassle won't bore you details, but HP's tech support was excellent compared to ASUS'. after going through the RMA process, i received the laptop yesterday. the keyboard wasn't installed properly was loose and flapping, i found that a screw wasn't even screwed down on the mother board (this was so obvious, even i could see it...) and i think there is a screw missing. the ASUS repair shop that did this, well, imo, sucks and it looks very shoddily done. the real problem is that now, after the repairs, it constantly freezes up. it is unusable. i have contacted ASUS tech once again, but i'm very disappointed w/ the machine's reliability at the moment.

so, at this time, i can't recommend this machine. i think ASUS really needs to step up their notebook quality checks. (i have asus monitors which are excellent.)

i'll update this review later after the next set of tech support.

received the 2nd RMA laptop. turnaround was quick.

they replaced the keyboard (w/ a different color one for some reason) and hard drive (which now makes a clicky noise once in a while). again, new setup.

after setting up windows, it did it's asus live update and windows update... still freezes! sometimes tries to boot, and then shuts itself down. sometimes fails to even show bios screen... basically, the same thing as before.

3rd contact to tech support in progress.

a lot of the positive reviews seem to be immediate impressions. i have to say, mine was very high as well when i first got it. it's really the long term problems that i think this laptop has and all the little issues that seems to pop up (to me and to many others) that i never really had w/ other laptops.

So, I got this beast a few days ago and the first 12-15 hours I spent debugging the other 6 hours installing updates. This notebook is built very tough and stays cool, basically all of the comments before mine appear to be correct so far. The GPU is fantastic and the sandy bridge gives you 8 threads of beastliness (the CPU). Display is gorgeous and the material used very comfy and nice to the touch. This machine is very very quite even at full load and does not heat up.

Note:

At some point the keyboard lights will not turn on for you. If pressing Fn+F4 does nothing, you will need to download the ATK driver from ASUS and do Repair>Restart TWICE. After that they will function again.

This is my first HP computer. Over the years I've typically purchased from a competitor. This machine from a specification perspective seemed to offer the best balance of performance and features for the price. I've been using this for a month and a half now and have not been disappointed. Plenty of power for multi-tasking. Easy to use. The software included is useful and further rounds out a great package. It runs cool given it's size and is easy to manage. I also use this to capture some missed TV episodes hooked up to my HDTV. Great keyboard, media controls on the panel, great sound for a laptop, plenty of ports. The memory card reader makes it easy to download photos from the camera.

VIZIO Thin and Light CT15-A2 15.6-Inch Laptop

The 15.6 inch Vizio Thin & Light is simply flawless. It is the best designed PC I have ever seen. I love the fact that the screen is 1080p and is matte. The surface is finger print proof and the body feels really durable. The only minor complaint is that the track pad isn't as amazing as the MacBook track pad. But in comparison to other PCs, this laptop probably has one of the better track pads. The keyboard may look a bit awkward, but after trying it and seeing in person, I am simply amazed. Typing is so easy and smooth. However, it might be a little loud compared to other laptops. The bottom has a soft rubber touch, making it easier to grip. The camera is probably one of the best cameras I've ever seen on a laptop. It shoots in 720p. The audio system is crisp and loud. I'd say that it is even better than the Beats Audio in my HP laptop. It does not offer a SD slot, but that should not deter people from buying this laptop. It is simply sleek, fast, and beautiful. Good job Vizio.

A beautiful laptop with a lot of issues. The laptop looks great and the screen is very clear. One of the only 1080p ultrabooks with a TPM chip so it works well from a corporate security standpoint. Very quick startup time and overall seems quick and responsive both when in use as well as startup/shutdown. Windows 8 is incredibly fast and 7 is not that far behind. One other plus is the support. So far I've gotten two quick responses through their live chat. Both responses weren't helpful, but it is nice to get someone quickly that can at least confirm your issue.

Some of problems I have with the laptop so far:

Battery life not as good as advertised. Mild use is closer to the 3.5-4 hour range.

Abbreviated keyboard. I'm not sure why with all the room on both sides of the keyboard they decided to leave off the PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys. I use Alt+Home all day long in browsers and the other keys for word processing and general navigation.

Trackpad. Like most other people are saying, the trackpad is a nightmare. The cursor constantly jumps around or locks on to a part of the screen you are not trying to select. Updated the driver, turned off the tap to select and it's still frustrating. I also had the cursor become completely unresponsive a few times already to the point I had to logout and back in to get it to work again.

For some odd reason they partitioned out the hard drive in a way that makes it difficult to carve out space for another OS. Multiple recovery partitions and a dedicated partition for the hibernation file prohibit adding any additional partitions. You can work around it by disabling hibernation and deleting the file and then reenabling it later on but tech support had no idea what I was talking about and couldn't give me a reason they needed multiple partitions for recovery.

Also, there are zero accessories for this device. That may seem like an after thought, but they literally do not sell A/C adapters yet. I checked with support to see about purchasing an additional adapter so I can have one for work and one for home but they do not sell them yet and do not have a timeframe for when they will. I asked what I would do if I lost mine and the answer was literally, "we will see what we can do."

Based on all these faults and the relatively high price, I would not recommend this to anyone.

First I like to say you can probably go to the Microsoft store and buy this. I bought this last weekend and there was a promo going on 20% off anything over a $1,000. So my laptop after tax was only a grand. Bought the two year insurance to go with it and after tax i paid 1250. Not to shabby.

I thought long and hard before I bought this laptop. I wanted all the reason to buy a Mac and to hate the vizio. I was comparing the Macbook Pro 13& 15inc & Air 13 inc, Samsung Series 9, Sony Z series. For the best bang for your buck. I choose the Vizio. Higher resolution then all 3, 1080p HD. Faster processor 1.9 i7. Yes many can argue the retina is better and higher. But be reminded your paying $2,200. There is a full HDMI on the ultra book. I know many normal laptops have the hdmi but for an ultra book Vizio its one of the few. But I believe it will become standard soon and other companies will follow.

Pros-

1. Fast!!! Boots up super quick

2. Screen is super nice, 1080p. Very nice viewing angles. I came from a 13 Inch Macbook and now I have a 15 and I cant go back.

3. Keyboard is wide, keys are shallow. (I can adapt to that)

4. The speakers are fair. Their pretty loud

5. When you adjust the brightness, it's bright!

6. 256 SSD for 1k. I'm not sure where you can find another laptop in that range. At least not yet.

Cons-

1. TRACK PAD!!! I came from a macbook, and even the macbook feels better. Trying to adjust. If I plug a mouse I know it will work fine, but I wish the track pad would be better.

2. No keyboard lights (I can live with, would have been nice)

3. No SD card slot (But I honestly don't remember the last time I used one, the adapter is only 10 bucks on amazon)

Conclusion:

Great machine for the price. The main reason I purchase the Vizio is because for Macbook Pro 15 Inch i would have had to pay 1800. Macbook Air to upgrade to the same specs would have been 1600. Samsung Series 9 with 256 would have cost 1700 (700 difference) And I heard their software takes up like 40 GB off the bat. Sony was like 1700 too. For me it came down to price and not brand. Many may argue you get what you pay. But right now I'm getting a lot for my buck. So I'm paying like 700 bucks less then most competitors. Yes I'm taking a risk with a new line. But that's why I have insurance. My biggest con will be the track pad. Coming from mac I almost cant stand it!!! I'm still adjusting. But this Vizio is a beast!

After purchasing the 15inch Vizio thin & light notebook at the Microsoft Store a few weeks back, and here are my thoughts:

First, the specs of my machine are the following:

15.6" 1080p IPS matte screen

Intel Core i7 (3rd generation "Ivy-Bridge" processor)

4GB RAM

256GB Solid-state hard drive

2x USB 3.0 ports

1x HDMI port

Price: $1199 + tax + $200 Microsoft Store gift card

First of all, I have to say that this machine is a great value for what you are paying. Don't be fooled by the Amazon pricing, I purchased this system for $1199 at the Microsoft Store, and it is listed at $1399 on Amazon (it's even $1249 on the Microsoft Store site, but I got a small discount, but I'm not sure why). Also, if you are a current college student, you can also get a free Xbox 360 4GB console when you purchase this laptop from the Microsoft Store (although I think a few other retailers such as NewEgg and Best Buy also have that promotion). I already have an Xbox, so I just chose to get a gift card instead. This should easily be enough to get a copy of Microsoft Office, a nice carrying case, and any other accessories you may need for free.

In addition, if you were to compare to compare this to a similarly spec'd MacBook Air, you're looking at about $1499. Now, granted, the Air is only a 13" while this is a 15", but all other specs will be similar, and even then you're not getting a 1080p screen on the Air. I'm not comparing this with the MacBook Pros since they all use the full voltage Ivy-Bridge processors, which means they are not really in the ultrabook category. Either way, there are a few caveats here and there, so it's hard to make an apples-to-apples comparison between this and any MacBook, but it's still worth considering.

Performance wise, I can say that I am very satisfied with the capabilities of the machine. I installed a copy of PCMark Vantage and got a score of about 12,300. This is comparable to other Ivy-Bridge equipped ultrabooks on the market (you can see some other results here: . In addition, due to the speedy SSD, I can shut down and restart in about 35-40 seconds.

The screen is 15.6" and full HD (1080p). That means that web-pages and videos look great. In addition, the screen also has a matte finish, so this helps reduce the amount of reflections that you usually see in glossy screens. Overall, the screen quality is excellent.

Battery life is decent. From my estimations, I seem to get about 4.25 hours when doing general web browsing/word processing. Keep in mind that due to the Core i7 processor and the 1080p screen, the battery life of this machine will be slightly lower than other similarly priced ultrabooks on the market.

There are a few downsides, however:

As is the problem with many Windows laptops these days, the trackpad is decent, but could be much better. The trackpad is manufactured by Sentelic, and not Synaptics, which tends to make the best trackpads. Strangely, the unit I purchased did not have multitouch enabled out of the box. I had to do a little bit of searching online to find an updated driver with two finger scrolling and pinch-to-zoom gestures. I was finally able to get them working fine, but it's interesting that they are not turned on by default, even since the display units at the store have multitouch gestures enabled. In the end, however, I don't care too much about this since I tend to use an external mouse most of the time.

In addition, I found the wifi to be a little unstable in the first week or so, but after that it seems to be working fine.

Overall, I really enjoy using this machine. In terms of value, this is one of the best ultrabooks you can buy. Vizio has a ton of experience making good screens on their TVs, so it's no surprise that they were able to put a great screen on this machine as well. The performance meets or exceeds other ultrabooks on the market and the battery life is also pretty good. If you are worried about the trackpad, then I'd suggest you go to try one out at a store first before making a decision.

I picked this up to use for personal and business travel because I wanted larger screen real estate than my iPad can offer but less weight than a traditional laptop. It's incredibly lightweight and the screen display/resolution is very, very good. On paper, the specs are great: 256Gb SSD, 4Gb RAM, and GB wireless NIC.

Here's where the device falls short: As noted by other reviewers, the touchpad, even under Win7 is pretty poor. I deducted one star for this reason. Downloading the latest drivers from Vizio's website helps a tad but it's just not as responsive as it should be. In fact, my 3 year-old Sony Vaio's touchpad is so much better such that you wonder why Vizio couldn't have pulled off a better design. The other drawback is a lack of a wired ethernet port but I didn't deduct any stars from the review since I knew this omission before buying.

The reason I deducted an additional star is that this device simply won't function under Ubuntu 12.04. The CT15 has an Atheros AR9462 Wireless NIC so Ubuntu (and most linux installs) will try to use the Ath9k drivers. Unfortunately, this chipset is not yet supported so I ended up with slow and often no network connectivity. Tweaking modprobe.d and loading the linux-backports-wireless modules wouldn't fix it. Moreover, the touchpad is just plain wonky under 12.04. Using dconfig-editor and/or Synaptics didn't help either. And you can imagine trying to troubleshoot these problems via a wireless internet connection of 1Mbps. I finally had to dig up an old USB-to-Ethernet peripheral to stay sane.

But the reason I deducted the last star was that after 10 days of daily use (despite the problems described above), the touchpad simply died. At first, I thought it was an Ubuntu issue but it also failed using Win7. (Fortunately, I had setup a dual-boot configuration which is not what I would've normally done I usually blow Windows off the system altogether.)

So while this laptop will probably work fine in Ubuntu six months from now, you'll probably want to wait until purchasing if that's what you want. If Win7 is your OS of choice, note that the touchpad is still just merely adequate and I wouldn't recommend it for long work sessions. I may take a look at the next gen of this unit because the display really is nice but until the touchpad is improved on the next gen, I suggest you wait.

Acer Aspire E1-571-6888 15.6-Inch Laptop (Glossy Black)

Just purchased this laptop recently and I am really happy with it. Build quality seems very solid. the lid is glossy but the inside around the keyboard and track pad are not which is nice, as far as I can tell it doesn't get smear marks like the gloss.

The Intel core i3 processor seems to have the speed I need. I am able to run all the desktop applications that I use on my desktop which has an Intel core i7 in it.

The integrated Intel HD 4000 performs well in video situations such as Youtube and Hulu, I haven't had any issues. I tried Minecraft, Portal 2 and varies other low end games on this system. Minecraft runs about 20 FPS and Portal 2 runs awesome with all the settings as high as they can go. Considering this is not a gaming system I think that's pretty good and works well for light gaming.

I like that the system supports up to 8GB of memory.

One thing I don't care for as an IT Tech, the BIOS is locked down. I can only change a few settings. The BIOS is called insydeh20, I feel if that is installed there should at least be a way to disable it.

Last note: there is no Bluetooth which I actually thought all laptops had.

Overall this is a solid system and has some nice features to go with it. This is an excellent system for my needs.

One note, setting the supervisor password for the BIOS allows you to change a few extra settings.

I bought this laptop today from my computer guy. It was brand new, I'm the one that actually cut open the box. I had him upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB, and it flies! I recommend this computer for anyone looking for a nice, stable computer. Upgrade the RAM if you get a chance and just sit back and enjoy! I usually don't write reviews on Amazon if I didn't buy it on Amazon, but this computer is worth it. The best laptop I've had since my last Acer in 2009. I have since had a Toshiba and Sony, also both good computers. This is just what I've wanted for, not only speed, but convenience, as this is a lighter laptop then the rest have been.

I have been looking for a new laptop for some time now. Trying to find a computer that is well-built, has great battery life, plenty of RAM and memory, and is a good price is a pretty tall order. I've looked at all brands, ASUS, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Dell, even Mac. Macs were too expensive, as were the Sony models that I looked at. It came down to a decision between ASUS and this Samsung. However, with the metal construction, and very well put together body, this feels very solid.

Battery life has been outstanding! 6 hours+ with the screen on full brightness. Graphics look great, videos are smooth with no lag or problems. DVD drive is very quiet, and boots up quickly. Very speedy processor, plenty of RAM...TONS of hard drive space. This computer has been flawless. I have a Samsung phone, and several other Samsung products, but this is the first Samsung computer that I've owned. I'm very pleased with it!

Well, I did not bought it from here but it does not matter. The computer has been great before I found out (after the return policy period) that the battery is faulty -it only last for 8 minutes after I unplugged the power cord. The reading dropped from like 78% directly to 8% without intermediate values. I sent it to Samsung for repair, and they seem to repaired the battery to an OK status (last for like 2-3 hours), but brought new problems -the LED lights (wifi, hdd and Numlock indicators) stopped working. I complained and sent it back to repair again, they claimed nothing is wrong and sent it back "directly", but I found out that the LEDs started to work properly, but the battery is now completely dead, even worse than the first time -it won't charge at all. I completely stuck to my desk with a laptop that is without any mobility. I tried to get a replacement from Samsung and they wouldn't let me, claimed that sending it back to repair again was the only thing they can do. Frustrated.

So if you bought a defective Samsung product, don't bother to repair, just return it or have an exchange from the dealer.

blazing fast and reliable, I simultaneously installed 5 programs flawlessly! now if only I could get a better router so my internet wouldn't slow me down! I would have preferred a different trackpad layout, one with dedicated buttons rather than one huge trackpad with lines to specify where the left and right click is. choppy gameplay when running "slender" at average graphics, perfectly playable lower than that. can run "Battle for middle earth 2" flawlessly at ultra high graphics. can run "minecraft" at acceptable framerates at decent settings. not a hardcore gaming computer but will definitely stand up to casual gaming and other programs. I'm having a hard time making the processor use more than half of its potential power! usually uses about 1000mh of its 2500mh speed when running a couple of programs at once. I would recommend this product to anyone!

5 to 4 stars. I returned to bestbuy because I felt I overpaid for it. Its very durable, has a large hard drive, and has a long battery life, but thats about it. I settled for a sony vaio e series sve15115fxs because I felt it was a better buy (intel 3rd gen 3210m processor, intel graphics 4000 (as oposed to 3000 here, the 4000 is much faster) and the ability to connect to my ps3)

HP Pavilion DV4-1547SB 14.1-Inch Black Laptop - Up to 4.25 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Profess

I didn't expect to buy this. First, I *hate* white electronics (they usually look cheap and like they should carry the Fisher Price logo). Second, I know people who have had serious issues with HP laptop motherboards. However, last week Staples had it for about two hundred bucks less than its MSRP which was about two hundred less than I expected to pay for these specs. I couldn't resist.

I'm happy with the design. First, the white is not so bad. It has a shiny "pearl" like surface, a subtle graphic design on the cover/wrist rests and black and silver trim. This all makes it look more grown up and stylish than other white laptops. Second, compared to other laptops with these specs it's not too big or heavy. It's in-between a netbook and most full sized laptops. Also, the weight can be reduced by half a pound by swapping out the DVD drive for a dummy piece which is included.

I'm overall happy with the performance and quality. Seems fast and smooth for the most part, and I'm not currently having any problems with it. But I had a couple of initial problems. First, I had to take the first one I got back due to a stuck pixel that I couldn't unstick with any software programs. I didn't want to risk voiding the warranty with any physical methods. The second one I got was stuck-pixel-free. However, I was having serious issues playing internet video. That was a big deal to me. I tried a live chat rep I think he was illiterate he kept asking for info I had already provided, completely misconstrued my problem and even when I explained it for the 3rd time, he offered completely inappropriate solutions (e.g. program specific solutions, when I had told him it was in all programs). Somewhat dubious, I finally called tech support. I got a guy who was GREAT. Granted it took us over an hour of troubleshooting, but he finally figured it out. The issue was the wi-fi card driver. It just needed to be updated with the newest, which was posted on HP's site. So, I highly recommend checking HP's site for the latest driver updates, especially if you're having this issue.

And I agree with the other reviewer about the battery 2 to 3 hours is what you can reasonably expect, but it depends on what you are doing. And yes, it is very quiet. Also, I should note that I did not get the rectangular remote shown on the bottom of this page with mine. I only got the small card one shown in the pictures up top. So, I don't think that other remote comes with it. (EDIT: Since I posted this review, Amazon has replaced the picture of the remote, it now shows a correct remote).

Just in case, I picked up Squaretrade's 3rd party extended warranty. It was a great price compared to Staples' and HP's plans. And it will protect me if this ends up being a lemon or if my dog flies into the cord and knocks it off the coffee table.

***UPDATE*** Good thing I got that Squaretrade warranty. I was carrying it from one room to the other with the cord and the cord's loop caught on a doorknob forcing everything out of my hand when I took my next step, and that was the end of my DV4-1540US. Hard drive survived, but screen didn't and Squaretrade reimbursed instead of fixing. I had planned on just buying the exact same thing, but learned it's been discontinued. The DV4-2170US seems to be its successor, basically being the same except with an upgraded processor (i5).

Since my Dell laptop is seven years old, I've been looking for a replacement for the last few months. There are so many options that it was hard to make a choice. Since I bought a Sony Vaio for my wife recently the VGN-NW270F, I had a good laptop to compare to this HP DV4.

You basically have two general choices to make: do you want a powerful laptop that can do lots of things, but has a shorter batter life or do you want a lighter less powerful laptop which has an extended life. I went with the power laptop which the HP is.

In general, I'm very happy and impressed. The HP is a bit smaller 14" vs 15.6", but I actually prefer the smaller form factor. The 15.6 is more a desktop replacement size. They both have the same 320 GB hard drive and plenty of other ports and 4 GB or ram. I wanted an HDMI port and both have this feature. When you connect the HP to my 42" TV the screen looks sharp and stunning. I can now watch internet video and ripped movies on my big screen. One feature the Sony has is the ability to play Blue Ray disks, but since I don't own any of those, it's not a factor.

The HP does have a nice Recovery partition and a few other features, but I don't use them. The Sony has a better metal body, keyboard and track pad area (I use a real mouse.), but the HP is ok.

Windows 7 is a joy to work with and even though I bought a manual, I haven't had to crack it open yet. I've gone from XP to Windows 7 without a hitch.

Case and keyboard not as nice as Sony Vaio.

Ordered this over the weekend, what a superb machine i mean super quiet, really fast, doesn't heat up and has all the latest multimedia features. I removed the optical drive (slide and remove) and lost about half a pound on the weight. Battery is great gave me 3.5hrs. I don't have any complaints. Do yourself a favor and ignore the other two reviews. For $689 this is a steal.

I got this laptop this week from Staples deal, around $ after all trade-in, rebates and tax included. It's a very nice laptop w/ white color, look sharp, easy set up, runs very fast, and super super quiet when it's on, almost all features included. I especially like the remote control. The only draw-back is the battery life seems it didn't last 4.25 hrs as it described, only around 3.5hrs. Overall, it's absolutly a good-buy for around hundred bucks.

I paid full price for this HP DV4 1540US laptop on November 5th 2009. I received the delivery of the computer promptly on Monday November 9th 2009. But when I opened the box it felt like I got a used/refurbished computer

Computer was loosely placed in the box without any cover. The power cord was open and placed loosely on the top of the computer....The user manual was open and placed on the computer instead of its designated location...I was very disappointed with the quality of packaging...It felt like the computer was opened used and then sent to me...It was very disappointing to get this kind of service quality from Amazon...

...I was so excited when I ordered the new computer after almost 5 years...(My Dell Dimension 5100 desktop died on me week before!! so decided to get a new computer)..but this made me rethink/doubt about Amazon's commitment to customer satisfaction and quality.

Please keep this in mind before ordering electronics from Amazon.com.

If you are looking for the ultra small form factor of a Netbook but would prefer not to have the ultra slow performance then the x100e is a choice you should consider. This is a true ThinkPad, complete with a fullsize keyboard and 1 yr return to depot warranty, not 90days like most consumer laptops. This model also includes a 3G WWAN card internally so if you were looking to get wirelss carrier access from AT&T you never have to search for a hotspot again, this gets you wireless access anywhere you have cell phone coverage. It also includes traditional WiFI 802.11 for wireless access at home or when you have a hotspot. The Athlon NEO MV-40 processor is more than adequate for everyday computing and then some. It also comes complete with a generous 250gb HD and 2gb of RAM not to mention WIN7 Professional. You do sacrifice an optical drive for ultra slim but if you were looking in the Netbook category these do not include an optical drive either. All in all a lot of Notebook at a reasonable price. The 35082AU nomally lists for $649 because of the GOBI 3G wireless. This add has the wrong MSRP listed so the discount is substantial. These won't be around for long at this price once this is discovered.

This is a good laptop to take on trips or the coffee shop. Its fast and great for internet usage. The only problem is that it really heats up and the fan just doesn't cut it. I've had this laptop for 18 months without a single problem, battery is still working for 3-4 hours just like when it was new. Not a bad laptop for $250 $300 purchase. Good luck

This has been very helpful and very convenient. Lenovo has a better built PC. After 3yrs. using a Samsung netbook and having to replace it with this X100e I am finding the support software for the Windows 7 has really been very smooth and very helpful in overcoming simple problems like trying to connect to the internet in strange areas, overcoming others.

This is a very nice little machine. Is just the perfect size for work on the road. Is fast, web surfing is a breeze, and has everything I need to stay in touch with friends and do work at the same time. Definitely recommend it.!!!

I got this laptop for free, which certainly taught me a lesson (that free things are hardly ever any good). It's got its good sides an excellent keyboard, a good matte screen, it's got good weight and all. Unfortunately, it's practically unusable. The system just freezes from time to time, and this with just the web browser loaded. Also, the tiny laptop gets really hot a real 'lapburner' this one. Finally, my battery is failing right now when I got it, the 3-cell would work for about an hour, now we're down to 15 mins, so the battery is, essentially, dead.

To sum up, I wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone. Yeah it's usable but you can't get much done on it. Google to learn more about its battery issues.
