Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-7343U 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 32

Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-7343U 15.4-Inch Laptop BlackThis is my second Lenovo notebook. The first one was a ThinkPad R61 which I liked very much. It got stolen out of the back of my car. So, liking the Lenovo product, I bought a new one. The product I am reviewing is similar to the "item being reviewed," the main differences being that I have a 2.0G processor where this one has a 2.13G processor.

Build Quality:

Lenovo is the company which manufactured IBM's laptop computers. IBM's laptops were designed for business users. They were tough enough to be dragged around everywhere. It continues to make laptop computers which are more road friendly than the competition, even in this unit which is "home user" oriented. On most of the competition's laptop computers for school and home use, you can twist the lid/screen and there is a good deal of flex. Not so here. This means the screen is less likely to get damaged or cracked. The rest of the case similarly has little flex which means it is well built. While the keyboard is not up to the quality of the ThinkPad line, it is still very good and does not have much flex or bend when you type on it. It is a bit heavy weighing in at over 6 lbs, but it is worth it to me when I consider that it is less likely to break.

XP Drivers available on-line:

The Y530 comes with Vista Home Premium. Mine has the 64 bit o/s. I hate Vista. It is bloated, slow, overly intrusive, the Start Menu was modified poorly from XP, it is cumbersome to find any administrative tools and it does not work with many pieces of business software. When Microsoft updates their operating systems, it seems that only their software works on the newer o/s. WordPerfect X3 (the better word processor!), Paperport 11.0, older versions of WordPerfect and Legal Solutions Plus and many older game programs simply won't work properly, even when you tell the system to run the program in XP mode. This, I suspect, is the reason about 75% of the business computers still run XP.

Vista Ultimate and Business come with downgrade rights to XP. Here, no such rights exist; HOWEVER, Lenovo provides drivers and software on line so you can load XP!!! (XP is faster than Vista and runs everything I need!) I will be downgrading.

Performance:

I get the following benchmarks with Vista:

Performance Test 6.1: 525.7

PC Wizard (not valid because of 64 bit o/s) = 2047

3DMark 01 = 5193

3DMark 03 = 2269

3DMark 05 = 1199

3DMark 06 = 905

SuperPI calculation of PI to 1M places takes 29.25 seconds.

PLEASE REMEMBER, MINE HAS THE SLOWER PROCESSOR SO THIS SHOULD BE ABOUT 5 10% FASTER!

In short, this machine is not as fast as my 2 year old XP based desktop which has a 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo with 2G of memory, an ATI All In Wonder X800XL video card on a Gigabyte 965G-DS3 motherboard running XP. This box is not up to speed for modern gamers. It has good speed as a home entertainment and business/school oriented system. An O/S downgrade to XP would no doubt give you an extra 10% or so of speed.

Appearance and Functionality:

Lenovo still goes with the industrial black look. The outside is plain dull black which is textured so as to make it easier to grip. None of the high gloss colored plastic stuff that is on so many HPs and Dells and Sony Vaios.

Inside, you get a piano black high gloss plastic surrounding the 15.4" screen. The hinge is in the back of the machine, and rather than clamp the screen on the top of the box, the lid is bent and wraps around the computer/keyboard/electronics bottom section. The keyboard is surrounded by a single piece of brushed metal with a black touch sensitive multimedia controls above the keyboard and an orange volume control on the right side of the touch controls.

The box contains five speakers, including an alleged subwoofer which fires downward under the computer. I would look at the Toshibas with the HK speaker systems for a better audio performance.

It comes with a multi-card reader slot, dual layer dvd/CD writer, HDMI output, VGA output, 3 USB ports, modem, ethernet port, built in WIFI, Dolby Digital sound system, microphone and 1.3 megapixel camera in the lid. It includes Veriface software which allows the computer to enter your log-on password using just your image. The Veriface software is very sensitive, and works only from the right distance and at the same angle. It does not seem to be available on XP.

Cons:

Unlike HP, the keyboard has no angle to it, so you are typing on a slightly uncomfortable surface if you have it on a desk or table. There are four small rubber pieces which protect the screen when the lid is closed. Two are right under your wrists and my writs rub against them unless I wear a long sleve shirt. It comes with Vista and a trial version of Norton Anti-virus, which I find ineffective and annoying.

The high gloss screen is a little too high gloss and too reflective under certain circumstances.

Conclusion:

Based on the price to performance ratio, excelent build quality and availability of XP drivers on line, I would not hesitate to purchase this unit again.

Pros:

1)value for money in the price range below 800$

2)if you like glossy screens...well this one is very nice. And yes, it's very reflective but it doesnt cause any problems even with some strong spotlights in the background. I was a little afraid that it would reflect everything and disturb actual scrren images but everyhings good.

3)4 speakers really do their job...much better than standard 2 speaker buzzzz:)

4)all the ports are located on the sides (better availability then at the back)

5)design (presonally i dont care about that in a computer but you might:)

6)external battery life indicator (nice!)

Cons:

1)Vista (but i am too lazy to undergrade)

2)screen protection rubbers are under your wrists while you type (not painful, just annoying)

3)touchpad buttons could be a little more sensitive (somtimes you need a double double-click for some things to work..or is it just Vista?:)

4)loads of unnecessary programs from lenovo, norton ect.

Overall i recommend this laptop for home and not hardcore(quite big and heavy) mobile use.

Buy Lenovo IdeaPad Y530-7343U 15.4-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 32 Now

I bought this computer primarily for entertainment purposes and it's handled everything I've thrown at it. I splurged for the nvidia dedicated graphics card which means I can play games like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and The Witcher on full res with no lag (even with environmental details like rain). Besides gaming, streaming Netflix and Hulu is a breeze and the screen is an excellent size for watching movies. As far as speakers go, the Dolby surround (which really works) plus the subwoofer is worth the extra weight, they sound better than many external speakers, and can get pretty loud if that's what you're into.

I thought that I wouldn't like the reflective screen but it really hasn't been a problem, the colors still come through bright and crisp.

For everyday use (work/school) this computer is a bit heavy to lug it around all day (but it's doable). I am using it for some basic bioinformatics (sequence alignment, etc) for which it is perfectly adequate.

What else? The 4GB ram means that the computer is fantastically fast, but as the other reviews have mentioned, Vista is a pain and eats up a full 2GB, you'll want to downgrade to XP(or upgrade when windows 7 comes out). If you decide to splurge for the Nvidia card like I did you should check for driver updates, mine were not up to date and it makes a difference performance-wise. The computer also came with "free trial" software including unregistered versions of Microsoft Office, so I had to spend a good 2 hours cleaning up my hard drive.

All in all, once I got the computer set up it has been smooth sailing with very few issues, none of which are related to the hardware itself.

Lenovo is known for making excellent products, and the Y530 is no exception. I have gone through various OSes on this laptop, including:

*Windows Vista HP (included w/laptop)

*Ubuntu 10.04 (for about a month; ran very well, just don't care too much for Linux)

*Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (my last operating system, which I had for nearly 2 years)

And now I'm on Windows 8 Consumer Preview 64-bit, which runs EXTREMELY FAST on this laptop! All OSes have run very well, but Windows 8 is probably the fastest system I've ever seen run in my life.

The build quality, hardware quality, and aesthetics are all top-notch... My laptop looks better than many of today's new models. I especially like the crosshatch pattern on the lid, as well as the fluid hinge. The screen's "glass" display is also a head-turner and looks spectacular when watching high-res movies. Oddly enough, my computer doesn't have the metallic finish around the keyboard like some Y530s. It is a strong, black plastic like the rest of the notebook.... Thank goodness, as the metallic finish is pretty ugly. The orange lighting complements the black color

The surround speaker system is freaking amazing. 4 speakers surrounding the keyboard (2 near the screen, one on each side of the keyboard) and one subwoofer on the bottom. The speakers are deep, not tinny like most laptops' speakers, and even have some bass. From Trivium to F.E.A.R to Avatar, the speakers produce sound like I've never heard on a 15' laptop.

My only issue so far was heat on the palmrest. As I found out, though, dust had been gathering inside of the internal fan ports. My home has lots of old carpet and a shedding dog... Recipe for disaster! I took the fan apart, which was very easy, and removed the thick layer of dust from the fan exit port. Now it runs at normal temperature.

I also got this laptop at a deeply discounted price from Lenovo ($750 w/free shipping), as they were discontinuing the Y530 for the Y550 back in early 2009. For the included hardware (top-of-the-line with a TV Tuner, Nvidia 9300M GS, Centrino 2, and 4 GB RAM), it was one of the best deals that I've ever been lucky enough to purchase.

I've owned my laptop for over 2 yrs now. I use it everyday and take it everywhere. I am giving it a 4 only because of the hinges that have now failed and it is a common problem with these laptops, but they are available. It has the old school look and build and is built like a tank, other than the hinge issue. I have dropped this laptop a few times and it still works. NEVER an issue with the hard drive or screen. I just bought a used one off of ebay "cheap" with a failed motherboard (due to a water spill) and I will use it for parts to fix mine. I like it and plan to fix it and keep it going!

been using it now for 8 months and it has worked flawlessly for me. and the best part is, i bought this on sale at bestbuy for only $349. yep, that's pretty much a steal for a 15.6" laptop with an intel i3 processor.

The one I purchased looks nothing like the picture (the picture is from the dv7 series I believe)

My most recent test for laptops is the playstation 2 emulator PCSX2. Most games were able to run at 60fps.

For those who don't know what that means, it basically means that this machine is a true beast.

The screen is nice and bright also.

The laptop does support hardware virtualization.

The touchpad does have 2 separate buttons (not like those annoying large pads where you press on the lower corners of the touchpad to click) as well as an enable/disable switch.

I had to install the internal bluetooth module myself, not too hard as laptops go, but expensive. $20 bluetooth module, $45 cabling kit, $12 S&H. and yes, you HAVE to buy the cabling kit as it is a 2 inch cable with tips that allow you to connect the module to the motherboard.

While upgrading the bluetooth, I noticed there is also a slot to stick a WWAN card as well.

There is an hp docking connector on the left side.

I found 4 USB ports, 3 regular and 1 esata/usb combo.

the video out is HDMI and VGA.

there is a firewire port also.

1 pcmcia slot (express card 54 type) which I only used to hold the remote control.

lastly there is an SD card slot. (if anyone cares, an inserted card fits flush so you can leave on in all the time without worrying about it breaking off.

here is the bad:

this thing runs hot and loud. Keep the vents clear otherwise it will overheat and shut off.

It's rather heavy.

it fingerprints easily. (I found myself cleaning it all the time).

Toshiba 15.6" Satellite Laptop 8GB 750GB | S855D-S5120

Toshiba 15.6' Satellite Laptop 8GB 750GB | S855D-S5120This computer is fast right out of the box with massive memory. The new windows layout took some getting used to, but there is an option to use the classic view as well! I bought this computer for business use, and so far it has passed all my test's! Great computer!!

I've been an Acer fan since 1997, had my first major Desktop from them and it ran forever. I use to like Toshibas laptops back in the day, 2004 till about 2009 or so when they really took pride in their machines. Now they are cheap plastic toys, and fall apart like leaves in the fall. First off the lid has horrible wobbling when you open it, the keys smash down into the body of the computer like grapes on pavement. The fan runs either constantly, or it can't decide and kicks on and off, on and off etc. Very loudly i might add. The speakers are horrible, i have headphones that are much louder. And the over all feel of the machine is just bad. It's really a shame when a company like Emachines (now owned by Acer) makes (made) a better quality laptop the Toshiba. I had one back in 2010, and it was built rock solid, tiny speaker sound, and a decent processor, but definitely better than this doorstop. I remember taking this out of the box thinking, are you kidding me?

I have an Acer 17.3 inch laptop that i got in 2010 as well, and it is fantastic, never an overheating issues, burned literally 100's of discs (maybe more), converted movies, great speaker volume, and the body is made very firm, with a good solid feel. I was never an AMD fan either, sure you get 4 cores, and it's more powerful than my laptop, but honestly, who games on them anymore? Hence the cheap price, look on Wal-Mart and the computer is 578$, ask why? Now you know. So good specs, don't mean your getting a good reliable quality machine. I've loved the underdog, (Acer) for years, and it's been great. Even my girlfriends new Gateway is made far superior. I miss the old Toshibas. Even the higher end models suffer from problems, i work on desktops only. But i've heard many people say they get more HP's Dell's and Toshibas coming through with problems, more than any others. So buy at your own risk. They didn't even make this model for 8 months, and now they are gone. Or overstocked at Wal-Mart. Buyer beware.

I only got mine for 260 bucks and its not bad. The bluray drive is nice and its a reliable pc. Its pretty fast and it looks sleek, just dont expect much out the graphics card other then that its fine with a solid build.

I purchased this laptop from Best Buy on Black Friday in 2010 for $400 ($150 off special), the laptop is fairly reliable, it has nice features such as:

Blu-Ray

Sleek design

Island keyboard

Great screen

The downside:

On the slow side

Crashes sometimes

Charger broke on me

Bad HDMI connection

After two years the charger broke on me and I had to get a new one...I also want to make mention of the HDMI connection, it sometimes takes some finagling to get it to work with the TV...sometimes it comes on, sometimes not..very annoying connection and setup for HDMI. Still, it has been over three years now and it is still going strong and I am about to use it when I go back to school. Probably a strong three and a half stars, would have been four if not for the charger.

Toshiba 17.3" Satellite P775-S7320 Laptop - Intel® CoreTM i7 Processor / 6GB DDR3 / 750GB HDD / Bl

Toshiba 17.3' Satellite P775-S7320 Laptop - Intel® CoreTM i7 Processor / 6GB DDR3 / 750GB HDD / Blu-ray / Fusion X2 Finish in PlatinumI read Amazon reviews all the time, but have never written one until now. I have to say that I am so doggone happy with my computer. Even though I've only had it for 24 hours, I'm very familiar with it because my daughter bought one over a month ago. In fact, we both bought a laptop over a month ago. Hers was this Toshiba and mine was a Sony Vaio (F Series) with 750GB, 8GB Ram, and higher features than the Toshiba. I bought it at the high recommendation of a technology-geek. He said it was comparable to a Mac. The screen was remarkable in clarity. I tried to love everything about that Sony; but the more I would witness the smooth operation of my daughter's Toshiba, the more I knew that I couldn't live with the many quirks about the Sony.

Where do I even start? The Toshiba's keyboard is the best I've ever experienced. The screen is crystal clear, the speakers are far beyond what I would expect from a laptop; and even though it's a 17.3" screen, it is incredibly lightweight. That was a huge factor in replacing my Sony w/the Toshiba. The Sony was HEAVY, and the Toshiba is portable enough for anyone. The touch pad is quite smooth, but not overly sensitive. My Sony was 8GB RAM, but it wasn't any faster than the Toshiba. In fact, the Toshiba seems to be faster w/6GB. Pages load up quickly. Many Internet tabs can be opened simultaneously and the computer doesn't freeze, nor is the speed affected. I just can't say enough good things about this Toshiba. However; because I want to be as honest as possible in my review, if anything changes down the road, I will come back with another review. Meanwhile, I'll say that when compared to my past laptops (Dell, Gateway & Sony), the Toshiba wins out hands down. I recommend this to anyone looking for a high-quality, reasonably-priced laptop.

I absolutely love this computer. The keyboard is a lot sturdier then most laptops I've seen. The screen is crisp and clear with great sound out of the speakers. I have played sims and lego harry potter among other similar games on this computer with no problem. The blue ray player is nice also. The only real downside I can think of is that the hard drive makes this weird shifting noise when it locks in place. Idk why the computer does this, I assume that its to keep from the hard drive being messed up. All in all this is my favorite laptop I have owned.

Complaints: 1) No system recovery discs in the box. I called Bestbuy and I was told they are not included now. The world is going to the ditch! Six years ago I bought my first Toshiba with the discs in. Nine years ago I bought a Sony VAIO (Stay away from it) with the discs in the box too.

So the first thing you have to do is burn your system recovery in a DVD disc, and a system back up in an external hard drive, I had to buy a 1 TB Toshiba with USB 3.0, dedicated only to this.

2)The light coming from the Satellite logo (At the front left) and from the touch pad long bar LED are really annoying, along with the system indicator lights at the front right. I tried to watch a Bluray movie and they were absolutely blinding. May be I'm getting old, but I've always been annoyed by excessive light, like in my car mirrors, there's always an idiot with the high beams behind me!

3) The touch pad (mouse) is far too much to the left. Any reason for this? It's not comfortable at all.

Well, there's another complaint: There's no way to install a second internal SATA hard drive, the bay is there, it's empty, but there's no connector. Preposterous! I hope Toshiba designers read this review. Let me know guys.

Pros: I like the screen, the speakers, the keyboard, and the laptop as a whole.

Cons: All connectors (Power, USB, etc.) located at both sides of the laptop. Shouldn't the power and some USB connectors be located at the back? And the headphones and mic ones at the front? How difficult is this to do?

Buy it, if you can live with all this.

ASUS 17.3' Core i7 750GB HDD Gaming NotebookBefore buying this great laptop make sure you do not accidentally buy the version with the 660 graphics. The 670 is what you want. Sony VAIO VGN-FW560F/T 16.4' NotebookI bought this laptop for video and web development after a friend bought the same. Windows 7 was already installed, so I was leery and excited. I have not been let down yet. I've never owned a Vista machine because I didn't want to deal with the in-between headaches of Microsoft's OS releases, so I waited until 7 was out in the market for a bit, having beta tested it as an MS Partner.

I've not been disappointed yet. All the things my clients and friends have complained about with Vista have not plagued my experience at all. It operates well with all the available memory and the applications share data exchange really well. I have more apps open at once than I should and this machine handles it all very gracefully

CONS: The only complaint is the cheesiness of the speakers, esp. for a Sony product and the very strange video-making program which is for total amateurs that need a wizard to make a video (not that that's a bad thing).

I've had mine for 2 years now and to current trends, I am still up and running with all the newer games and a great 60 frames when I do. It's fast and stylish. It has a bluray player so that is always a

plus.

I guess my only complaints are that now a days it's all about those Icores and this computer runs a centrino duo 2 which is pretty outdated processor. Also the battery life is truely horrid. PROTECT YOUR BATTERY OR ELSE!

HP G42-230US 14-Inch Laptop

HP G42-230US 14-Inch Laptop!!UPDATED!!

I have had my g42-230us for three months and found it to be a decent moderately powerful computer. The 7200RPM hard drive and 1Mb per core cache give it the extra "umph" it needs to compete with the Intel offers.

This computer, like most consumer targeted systems, came loaded with bloatware (software that isn't required and slows down performance).

I am a computer tech so the first thing I recommend for this and all consumer targeted computers is to make the restore DVD's as soon as you turn on the computer and before you connect to a network or the internet. Second thing I recommend to do is to get a genuine copy of Windows 7, then use it to reformat (and delete all extra hard drive partitions) and reinstall operating system. Doing this is almost literally the difference between night and day. You will realize more hard drive space, faster boot and shutdown, no software "nags" (other than Windows 7 "nags") or bloatware pop ups to activate and upgrade trial software and no performance robbing unnecessary running services and registry entries.

I tell my customers to consider this a required cost to any big brand consumer level computer purchased (comsumer level computers are typicaly computers sold that are not installed with Windows 7 Professional). You can get windows here on Amazon:Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Microsoft Windows 7 Professional . Keep in mind bloatware keeps the cost of the computer down (the computer's maker is often paid to install this trial software in hopes it will lead to the sale of the full product.

After installing Genuine Windows 7 64bit I have a decent professional grade laptop for a few hundred less than what HP sells them for otherwise.

Clarification from what other reviews have stated: All three USB ports are v2.0 and are powered to 500mA. I have tested them and confirmed this to be true even under battery power.

Note:

No modem is included and no PC Card socket is present.

The speakers and Altec Lansing, upward facing above the Function keys near the display hinge.

Wired LAN is not Gigabit Ethernet (this is a real downgrade from my almost four year old Acer Aspire).

Annoyances:

The power button is slightly recessed and very small. I have very small fingers but still have to press the button multiple times to get it depressed enough to activate (but now I just use my finger nail and it works fine).

The hard drive activity light looks to be a 1mm LED mounted behind a hole in the left side of the unit next to the media card reader. This is excellent for the person sitting to my left when they want to know if my hard drive is active but totally useless to me.

Also the power / charging light looks to be a 1mm LED mounted behind a hole on the right side near the DC input. This too is excellent for the person on my right that wants to know if my laptop is charging or on but totally useless to me.

There is however a power light in the power button above the Function keys and speakers near the hindge but it to looks to be a 1mm LED pointed straight up and can't be seen when the lid is closed so you cannot see if your computer is on/sleeping/or off unless you open the lid or look at the led on the right side of the unit.

Almost a deal killer is the fact that the touchpad area is not recessed or raised, nor does it have a different pattern or texture than the palm rests. Without looking, using the touchpad buttons as an guide, a person cannot feel where the touchpad area starts and ends on the left and right side. I used 3M blue painters tape 3M 2090 Scotch-Blue Painter's Tape for Multi-Surfaces 1-Inch x 60-Yard, 4-Rollto create outlines of the touchpad area to use the unit in the dark and without watching my fingers.

Battery:

The stock battery is a MU06 and the battery life is very good but I got the MU09 extended life batter anyway. The extended life battery does stick out some at the bottom causing a funny lop-sided look. Also an optional higher watt charger can be found but I don't know it would be any better than the one included. HP 90W Smart Ac Adapter US

I like Acer / Gateway laptops because I had always found them easy to work on but I have already taken this one apart pretty well and it isn't as bad as the HP computers of previous years.

I have a report for Speccy on my unit:

I have been informed that there is a clean install restore option but this is not an option on my unit. The factory restore "clean" option still installs many services and registry items including HP "nags" and programs that connect to HP's web site to keep you informed up updates and messages (offers). The clean install I recomend will give a user the most out of the computer.

!!!!!!CAVEAT!!!!!!!: Some users do not mind or miss the lost performance and hard drive space and can very well live with the hp "clean" install or even the factory install.

I only mention the clean install in my review because I and most of my cutomers are "power" users and prefere a true Windows clean install from a genuine Windows disc. Plus a person can buy almost the same computer without the bloatware software installed for twice the price. I am just pointing out an alternative to spending twice the money and getting the almost the same computer as a pro model.

I purchased this computer from another site when they had a promotion on it. I looked at the specs and the price, and saw that it was a steal, and I abandoned my prejudice against HP for their past products and bought it. I am very happy that I did. I won't say the exact price that I got the computer for, but I will say that this computer is in the $600 and under category.

This computer is a good mixture of good technology. The processor in this computer is a very good processor for a number of reasons. The L2 cache is 2mb as opposed to 1mb in most Turion IIs; the energy consumption is 25w, which is very low for a laptop processor of this magnitude. The M880 chipset and ATI Radeon 4250 provide a decent graphics setup; obviously, this computer isn't for modern gaming due to the lack of a dedicated video card... However, this video setup is much better than you will get with any Intel onboard graphics and will work just fine for most anything short of intensive 3D gaming/ 3D rendering... The 14" screen on this computer is a good one, with great viewing angles. The speakers are good for laptop speakers, but really, there aren't any spectacular internal laptop speakers and so if you want great sound quality and volume, invest in a decent pair of laptop speakers. The HDMI port is wonderful... can't forget to mention that! HDMI is a nice feature to have on a laptop of this type!

Aesthetically, this computer is certainly pleasing. The silver-ish patterned case of the computer is really unique and I really enjoy it. 14" is the perfect size for me, as it cradles perfectly in my lap and is much, much more portable than 15.6" or so laptops than I have owned in the past.

The keyboard is not bad at all... No Num Pad, but the buttons and function button planning are very well done. For a 14" laptop, I'm not sure if you can ask for a smarter/ better keyboard than this...

As for the cons, there is one that may just be something I am misunderstanding, but it really seems like the USB port that is on the right side (for the mouse) is not USB 2.0... For some reason, it doesn't get nearly the transfer rate as the other USB ports. I recommend getting a high speed hub with this computer so that you can easily add the additional USB ports that you will surely need. The other con is also fair in magnitude... HP has a lot of programs that it installs to keep your computer running well with HP updates on the drivers on your computer and such. Some of these programs are helpful and some are bloatware. It is much harder to sort out which is which with HP laptops than other brands, since they get so much more involved in the upkeep of your computer. I have it set up just fine on my computer now, and practically any laptop that you get nowadays is going to have some kind of bloatware on it, so the problem is easily handled with a bit of time, just like with most laptops. Extra care is needed to make sure that you do not remove programs that HP has created to help your computer, such as keep the hardware drivers up to date, etc...

All in all, this computer is great... Just what I was looking for! This laptop is perfect for just about anyone that doesn't do intense 3D graphic stuff. I would even go so far as to say that anything better than this is overkill if you are not going to be doing that type of stuff. This is a great desktop replacement computer that is very versatile in its uses and very good on the battery given the power of the computer. I was hesitant to buy HP before this computer, but I am certainly not anymore.

Five stars from me!

Edit-

Windows Experience Index: (out of 7.9)

Processor 5.8

Memory 5.9

Graphics (Aero) 4.2

Graphics (Gaming) 5.3

Hard Disk speed 5.9

This shows that this is a well rounded computer, just a step below cutting edge in every category (and still pretty cutting edge in most categories). 4.2 for Windows Aero experience is a typical score for GPUs of this type.

This ranking also doesn't rank on things like battery conservation, which this computer is great at. I hope this info helps someone interested in this computer!

I have had this for over a month. Best computer I've every owned.

*The keyboard feel is extremely comfortable, light, and responsive--highly important for a computer injury victim like myself.

*The 14" 1366 x 768 is clear and easy to read, even for largish spreadsheets.

*The 5 lb weight means I can carry it everywhere in my backpack. It's the right compromise between a heavier laptop with a bigger screen and a netbook. I have both with Windows XP, but I had to keep transferring data between them. Now I just use the G42 for home and coffee shops.

*I find I like Windows 7 better than XP. I upgraded to Professional and installed the XP virtual machine to solve any compatibility problems, but haven't had to use it much.

*Feels nice and sturdy.

*Decent price

*HDMI output.

When I was looking for a laptop with the performance, style, and light weight, I naturally settled on this HP G-42-230US. It has a 14 screen that is perfect for your everyday typing, if you want to watch a DVD at a coffee shop, or if you're like me, the occasionally youtube video. So far, I have no complaints about this laptop.

Like the previous reviewer, I was surprisingly happy at the weight of this laptop. At 4.85 lbs, I feel like I can carry it with me everywhere. I even looked at some 13.3 inch Toshiba and Lenovo laptops, but theirs' measured at around 4.75 or 4.8 lbs with a bigger price tag.

Pros of this amazing laptop:

-lightweight

-long battery life

-very good quality camera

-a senor mousepad that allows you to turn it off or on with just one finger

-user friendly installation

-rank #1 in Newsweek's green ranking (it uses less energy than your average 14-in laptop)

-sturdy feel (good material)

-brought it when amazon had a fantastic price of only $550 with free shipping

If you're looking for a stylist laptop with the performance specs to back it up...this is the laptop for you!

I have had this computer for about 4 months, and it is not what I thought it would be...its worse. I bought it because it was a steal and i was on a budget. The battery life is about 1 1/2 hourse, which is not very good when you use it during a 2 hour class! I hate the mouse pad because it gets dirty very easily because of the crevices (the whole computer is acutually that way) The bottom gets SUPER, SUPER hot. I have acutually had red marks on my legs when I have let it sit to long on my lap, because it was so hot. I am currently saving my money to buy a macbook. If you can afford the extra couple hundred dollars, I would definately go for a little better laptop. I will not be having this on much longer because I dislike it that much.

Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 2746 Notebook

Lenovo ThinkPad SL500 2746 NotebookI had owned an IBM Thinkpad about 7 years ago, and it was a solid machine. Six months ago, I needed a new laptop for home use. I have had such great luck with Dell computers, and that's what I wanted to get, but Dell was charging $130 to "downgrade" to Windows XP, so I bought the Lenovo SL500, with XP included, instead.

The first thing that I noticed is that the computer was wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped in a UPS box similar to a USPS Priority Mail type box. That it! No styrofoam or anything!

When I got it home, I discovered a bad pixel on the display. I immediately packed it back up for return, but when I got on the website, I discovered that you have to have a certain number of pixels bad on a display before they will take it back -there is some acceptable standard of bad pixels that we should all expect to be OK.

Next, the unit comes with wireless and a Realtek network adapter. It took me the better part of two days to figure out how to get the network adapter to appear on the hardware list so that I could select and enable it. This required support outside of Lenovo's useless customer service.

I finally got the thing up and running, and have not been terribly unhappy -until about three weeks ago, when the machine suddenly stopped loading web pages in their entirety, regardless of whether I'm going through the network card or I'm using the wireless adapter. The unit does a successful DNS lookup finds the page, begins loading... and thbpbpb... bupkiss. (Guys, you know what that's like...)

After checking to make sure the issue was not on my cable modem, router or other network components, I downloaded all the diagnostics from the Lenovo site and ran them. They tell me that everything is fine! I've reloaded the ROM BIOS. I've unloaded and reloaded the software firewall and anti-virus scanner. Still bupkiss.

Now I am digging up an old pile of junk Gateway from the basement to use just for web browsing. The Lenovo just won't do it -and there's nothing else wrong with it! It finds my e-mail server just fine.

Do yourself a favor -STAY AWAY from Lenovo products! It wasn't worth the lousy $130 I saved.

I ordered this laptop for my son so he could take on the road with him for his work or when on vacation. I had it sent to my house so I could load some software I had ordered. I also ordered some other things to go with the laptop like a carrying case. I played with the laptop for a few days until everything arrived and I thought it was an excellent purchase. It appeared to very sturdy good for taking it on the road. It was pre-loaded with Windows XP Professional but has Vista Home Premium backup licensed for the PC. It had an option to upgrade to Windows 7 if you prefer that.

I have sent everything to my son in the meantime and he has used for a couple of weeks. He is using it wirelessly in his home but has not taken it on the road at this time. Everything seems to be working smoothly. He also has a wireless HP printer that he has been using with the laptop with great results.

I would recommend this computer to anyone who needs a solid computer to take on the road.

I used an IBM Thinkpad T60 in the past, thin, light and reliable, therefore, when I needed a personal laptop, I choosed Lenovo, thinking it'd at least be as good, since the SL500 had way better specs.

No, NO, NO! It turned out to be a complete turkey, (and I don't mean the country), it is SLOW, even though I upgraded it to 4 gig RAM, it takes forever to OPEN ANY APPLICATIONS, takes close to minutes to Hibernate, shut down or switch on. In the first year, I sent it back 2 times, 1st for modem disconnection. When you 1st on the PC, the wifi works, After a certain length of time, it's line's dropped. And no amount of manual scanning works, it has to be restarted, and wifi is picked up again...... for a certain amount of time again, before "disconnection". So, I brought it back to service center, during warranty period, guess what, they said they know, very common problem. So they changed the modem card.

Next problem arise shortly after 1st service, within warranty period, when the PC is on and you have to carry it somewhere, some tilting is involved, out came some sound like breaking of glass, or dropping of a bunch of keys, I KID YOU NOT. SO I brought again, to Lenovo service center, GUESS WHAT??? APPARENTLY, IT IS ALSO A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. "It's the Fan", they said.

They fixed it, changed the fan..... Soon, it ran out of warranty period, and GUESS WHAT? The LCD went blank. Since it's no longer works and past warranty period, I just park it aside somewhere, as I had another work Laptop to use. Eventually, I brought it back to Lenovo (after I tested it by plugging it with VGA cable to my flatscreen TV, I knew the LCD blew), I brought it back to Lenovo to explore possibilities to change the LCD, GUESS WHAT?.... They were honest this time, told me to forget it, it'd cost too much, in the region of getting a new one. Recommended that I try some IT repair center in town. I did and the fixed it for Ringgit Malaysia RM400, instead of the estimated RM1,600 by Lenovo.

However, I suspect that while this SL500 is not the most brilliant of Lenovo's but problem's compounded by Vista Business Pro. I'm considerinbg if changing Vista to Windows 7 helps. But the modem disconnection problem is back, and I'm considering also to change an OEM wifi modem, chucking the 320 Gig HDD and changing it to 500 gig. I feel very cheated by Lenovo, but this comes with some Intel Duo Core T8400, boasting 2.4 Ghz speed, so it's a kinda wasteful if left lying around doing nothing. I welcome any feedback on what I should do with the unit, it's solid and heavy, probably hardy, but not suitable as a mobile unit.

Bought this laptop about 3 years now. Worked very well after I upgraded it to 4G RAM. (1G is not quite enough for Vista....proved) It is much quieter than the Dell I used before. The power cord is vulnerable just like the old IBM models. So be careful when you plug the cord in, never bend or twist it. I am cautious enough because I had the same problem with an old IBM X series years ago(that baby lasted over 7 years, hope this one could do it too). In a word, this is a good laptop so far as expected. The only thing is that it is not as light as the X series. But for $500 this is awesome value.

Stay away from this piece of JUNK!!!! This machine has been nothing but problems from the day I got it out of the box. I have had 5 ONSITE VISITS and it's still not right!!! Connection problems ON THE FIRST DAY...unexplainable error messages. Can't even load standard software applications without all sorts of compatibility issues!!! I'm going to wear their onsite support out because they're going to KEEP coming out until I've gotten ten times the cost of this piece of junk in service calls alone. And I'm going to SLAM Lenovo on every forum I discover on the internet.

Too bad you can't rate this garbage with negative stars.

Lenovo Ideapad S10e (gray)

HP Pavilion DV7-2040US 17.3-Inch Laptop

HP Pavilion DV7-2040US 17.3-Inch LaptopThis laptop is way beyond my expectations! i have had it for over a week and it's a beast!

PROs: the quad core is amazing. not only is it fast, it adds up to 2Gb to video when gaming. the price is top notch! 2 HDD bays(the 500Gb is actually 2x250Gb), eSATA port, great screen! this is the lightest 17" laptop i've held in a while. while i am an nVIDIA gamer, the ATI does a good job withstanding COD4/5, Assassins Creed, and Crysis at almost the highest settings. not bad for a prebuild that is less than $1500!

CONs: beside the fact that HP doesn't include restore discs, there really aren't any... (you will have to create your own restore discs but HP does provide directions on how to do it. it does take a while!)

Other thoughts: i am currently in the process of bumping the RAM from 4Gb to 8Gb and the HDD from 2x250Gb to 2x500Gb. there is nothing wrong with the speed of the laptop but you can never have enough RAM with 64 bit Vista! the hard drives are just for more storage. i love this laptop. compared this one to the latest Gateway FX and the Dell XPS and for the price of this HP, the other 2 couldn't touch this.

Do yourself a favor and buy this from a site other than HP. the same laptop built thru HP was running higher than $2200 for the exact same setup...

The HP DV7-2040US is a great value. I always multi-task and use some really resource intensive programs. This machine is able to handle it. I had been considering a Quad-Core notebook for some time, but did not want to drop $3,000 $5,000 for bleeding edge technology. HP has a winner here as a platform, however, I have a few caveats. The specs state that it has full screen HD. DO NOT MISTAKE THAT FOR FULL HI-DEF RESOLUTION. You may have to hunt to find the resolution buried in the technical specs, it is only 1600 x 900. This machine does NOT have A single 500GB hard drive, rather, it has two 5400 rpm hard drives. The machine is fast enough that the supplied drives have to labor to keep up. This machine uses DDR2 memory, so you will not get bleeding edge speed, but then again if you want to upgrade to 8GB's of RAM, you should be able to do it for the DDR2 price of less than $300 as of this writing rather than the DDR3 price of $600 $800. As I said, for the money, this is a great value. Lots of processing power, handles graphics and any chore like the workhorse computers from which it is descended.

I work with computers for a living so i've always built and maintained my own systems but have held off on getting myself a laptop. They've always been too small or slow or both until now. For what I am going to be using it for, it fits me perfectly. I like having dual hard drives (2x250) so I could upgrade to SSD (which I plan to do for even more speed) at a later date. I've upgraded my system from 4GB to 8GB and Vista lasted long enough to get a entire system backup. I then formatted the system and installed Windows 7. No matter how big or fast a laptop you buy, Vista will always seem like a dog when compared to 7 or XP. Installing 7, it loaded most of the important drivers (wireless, lan and video) that is needed to get up and running you will still need to download the rest of the vista drivers for the other odds/ends, but was for the most part painless. I've got OpenOffice and AVG antivirus (both free) installed. Be sure to adjust your power profiles within 7 (or Vista for that matter) to get the performance you want during on or off battery use. Mine out of the box was 'vanilla' and needed ramped up a bit to get full use. Just keep in mind this will change how long your battery will last, if you use it much on battery (which I do not). All in all, the only thing I would change about this laptop is it is a bit too glossy for me. Sure it looks nice and stuff right out of the box, but shows a lot of prints. Also, it can get warm if you lay it on your lap for long periods of time. Not sure if this is the right laptop to take with you on long flights across the country it would probably stick out along the edges of your food tray, not to mention the heft as a carry on. A 15" with a quad core would be nicer if you travel often. I've owned it about a week now and would purchase it again without hesitation.

Tip if you plan to upgrade to 8GB of memory, seach ebay...I bought mine for 225. (8GB 2x4gb) Windows experience under Vista was 5.5 (disks being weakest link), Win 7 was 5.6 (again, disks being weakest link Proc/Ram scored 7.0)

I got this laptop about 6 hours ago and I have to say, after inspecting and playing with it, I really like this laptop. Sure the frame could be more solid and the because of the 16:9 widescreen, it looks smaller then I imagined a 17.3 inch to look like, but I still really like it.

Now for a couple of bad points. The battery life is awful. I unplugged it and in 10 minutes, the battery went down to 94%, with power-saver ON. It doesn't click closed, it's kind-of like folding a piece of cardboard in half and calling it closed. Right now I find no more negitives.

I love the quad-core. Love the 4gb of mem and the room to add 4 more. Powerful videocard. I love it. I will review more in 2 months and share how it's going.

Want HP Pavilion DV7-2040US 17.3-Inch Laptop Discount?

I bought this computer because it's the cheapest name-brand quad-core laptop I could find. I'm re-encoding some video into H.264 and need lots of computer power. This HP encodes in 2.5 hours what my 2GHz Pentium M mono-core Dell would do in 23 hours. The laptop puts out a good bit of heat with all four cores cranking away, so it might be too hot to rest on one's lap -best to keep it on a table or desk for the CPU chomping.

The laptop comes with Windows Vista Home. I re-partitioned the hard drives and installed Windows 7 RC1 from the Microsoft website and the 64bit Vista drivers from the HP website. Most drivers work except the for Synaptics -that I had to get from the Synaptics website. The laptop runs flawlessly. Beware that HP doesn't supply the Windows XP drivers for this laptop in case you're thinking of using XP.

Sony VAIO VPCCB25FX/W 15.5-Inch Laptop (White)

Sony VAIO VPCCB25FX/W 15.5-Inch LaptopA great laptop, one of the things it doesnt list is the graphics which is powered by intel hd 3000 (still plan on testing out star wars knights of old republic to see the capabilities of integrated graphics) This laptop runs smooth still getting use the high-def screen which tends to make icons smaller. I really like the inclusion of the blu ray drive and back light keyboard so when im off on business trips i can still watch my blu ray movies. i had this model and another with dedicated graphics chip but choose this one because of the lower cost which i got $836 only a couple days ago. Like most computer come with bloatware which is easily removable. The only thing i dont like is glossy front near the keyboard which gets smudges easily. Have not had much time to test out the battery but seems to have normal battery rate as other laptop makers. Lastly one of the things i liked most about this company is Sony themselves having just retired my three year old sony labtop (still running great) for this one. I chose the I5 processor because in comparing the reviews there seems to be not that great of difference between the I7 and I5. I would recommend upgrading the ram as i upgraded it to 8gb, now the only thing i gotta wait for is windows 8 so i can upgrade my os. Hope this review help any questions i be happy to reply or test out. Oh yeah boottime is pretty quick like 15 sec. Giving it and 4 and a half star if it was not for the glossy front but a must buy!

I recently purchased this laptop and its awesome.I already own two other Sony Vaios which have been quite durable,so my choice was easy,SONY ALL THE WAY....Thanks Guys.

Very disappointed.

After working with Sony support the problem was resolved. Excellent support.

ASUS X55C-XH31 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

ASUS X55C-XH31 15.6-Inch LaptopThe laptop is pretty good for its price. I've only had mine for couple weeks and I'm yet to be disappointed. Mine came with everything including the manual. The load time is pretty quick. The only downfall so far is that the keyboard seems to be a bit insensitive for people who use a quick and light touch. I have to type slightly harder than what I'm used to but nothing too excessive where I would go to the point of returning it. Also when I first got it Asus has bunch of their programs to help the computer function, but I'm not too fond of those programs that just take up space so I had to delete/uninstall couple of the start up programs. Otherwise I really like this laptop.

Pros:

Nice design

Quick start-up speed

decent battery life

Cons:

Insensitive keyboard (need to type with purpose)

bloatware

This was chosen for me as my work computer, so most certainly NOT my first choice. Here's why:

1. Glossy screen though this is standard for all laptops in this price range, it doesn't mean I have to like it. The reflective surface makes it more annoying when analyzing graphics on the screen. For everyday word processing, coding or browsing, it's fine.

2. Only 2 USB ports My external keyboard and mouse both take up a slot, so if I want to plug in any USB drives or peripherals, I'd have to unplug one of those, or get a USB hub.

3. Below average display The colors seem washed out. I haven't tried fiddling with any of the video settings, but out of the box, I don't like it. It's not as crisp as I would like. I have an excellent monitor and the feed from this laptop makes the text look a bit muddled.

4. MORONIC touchpad design The initial idea was kind of clever extend the surface of the touch area by hiding the clicking buttons underneath the bottom corners. Unfortunately this results in a lot of unintentional mouse movements while trying to click something. It takes a fair amount of pressure to press the button, so I habitually use two fingers so as not to cause a repetitive stress injury to one finger from pressing so hard. This two-fingered press causes the mouse to get twitchy because you're also touching the touchpad surface. I'm also constantly zooming in or out in my browser screen somehow. I try to do it on purpose but I'm not sure how that works via touchpad. I always fix it again by using Ctrl + or -. Many touchpads have the ability to scroll by running your finger down the right side. Not this one. I hate this touchpad. I don't mind a smaller swiping surface if I can just get the normal buttons again. Thankfully I'll only have to use this stupid touchpad while I complete initial setup, and afterwards if I take some work home.

A coworker has a different Asus machine with the same idiotic touchpad. She doesn't use a dual-screen setup like I do. She uses an external monitor/keyboard/mouse while the laptop remains closed and off to the side. The touchpad STILL manages to cause problems by somehow inducing twitchy mouse behavior. We were able to solve this problem by completely disabling the touchpad.

The sound is decent, but at work I'm not going to be watching movies or playing much music. Overall the build seems solid. I also like that the primary cooling vent is on the side instead of the bottom. Keeps it from overheating if placed on a bed or pillow. For the average home user, this machine is probably fine. However I would not recommend this for any kind of work environment. You'll be spending too much time trying to work around its shortcomings to be productive.

I am very happy so far with this laptop. My main complaint is that it does not come with a manual. I contacted Amazon, ASUS, and Microsoft, and no one could provide me with a manual. It seems it can only be accessed online.

Overall I am pleased with this laptop. Bought this as it had Win7 (thankfully) and a good balance of features. Quality-wise the only flaw is the keyboard, which is a little mushy (sinks a bit) right around the 8-9-I keys. Other minor things of note: USB ports are both on the left side, and no dedicated "insert" key (shares key with delete using Fn). Screen viewing angle is decent L/R, but somewhat shallow Up/Dn (screen loses contrast a bit).

HP Compaq Tablet PC TC1100 - Pentium M 1 GHz ULV - RAM 512 MB - HDD 40 GB - GF4 420 Go - WLAN : 802.11b - Win XP Tablet PC - 10.4' TFT 1024 x 768The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because one part was broken (which the seller described when I purchased it). Other than that, this is the best computer ever. And when I took it to school with me, others (who had purchased more expensive laptops) were going ga-ga over it.

You can write on the outside of the cover when it is closed. You use a stylus pen which pops out of its own little compartment when you gently press down on it. You can detach the keyboard completely if you don't want to use it. There are so many different features that it is just amazing. Sometimes when I take it to class, I will go to the "One Note" program and click "record" and let it record the teacher speaking. I can even write notes on it. Both the voice and the written notes are typed right into a Word document for me.

If you can still find one of these, I would definitely recommend buying it because it is so worth the money. I only paid $220.00 on amazon.com which was a steal deal.

When I received this order I was surprised to see it was not the Toshiba but a HP Pavilion g7. So I cannot rate the Toshiba as I never received it. If I have problems with the HP as I did my last one I will let you know. I SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN WHAT I ORDERED NOT A CHEAP LESS DESIRABLE PRODUCT. VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS.
