This is supposed to be a gamer laptop but I have been editing video and working on my website and once you take a break and watch a blue-ray movie it is mesmerizing and gratifying to see every detail in animated action films. This is a tool for the professional so it is priced in the pro bracket but worth every penny. I have only had it for a couple of months but I cant find a fault

in this package. Even the battery holds up for about 5 hours. There is a higher capacity battery if you need one. It comes with plenty of software, even Sony editing software. I purchased this notebook for home use to replace my old 17" Vaio, WinXP, Pentium4, 60GB HD notebook which I used almost 8 years absolutely free of trouble. My old Vaio was still working but after installing so many applications and Windows updates (these accumulate) C drive(10GB) was suffocating. I decided to look for a new one before something bad would happen. As I have used Vaios since the time it first came out as desktop model 18 years ago and those I used were all reliable and long-lasting I had no reason to look for other brands. I selected this model because this has full HD screen, Blue-ray player, the fast i7 processor, with all of which I can do many things for several years from now. The size 16.4" was just right to replace my old one, and the price was also reasonable and came with $50 Amazon gift card. I could use the card for purchasing a fitness bike I wanted too.

I have used this notebook for two months and two weeks so far. While installing some applications in the first week I noticed something was preventing full installation. So I uninstalled pre-loaded anti-virus software and replaced it with another one which came free with RoadRunner cable. Since then all applications installed smoothly. When purchasing this laptop I didn't pay much attention to pre-loaded software, but exploring the notebook I noticed it came with video-editing and music-editing applications. Therefore I didn't have to look for Windows7 upgrade of my old video-editing software. Also, as I'm interested in playing around with Miku-like vocaloid, I can use the pre-loaded music-editing software to compose background music to go with vocaloid. I already downloaded many free loops available at the applications websites but I need to learn more about composing.

The laptop automatically looks for updates of system and Vaio softwares and notifies you when available. I just had such a notice a week ago and when I click "intall", several updates were downloaded from Vaio sites and installed one by one into the laptop. My major use of this laptop so far (only two months) is for editing photos, images, videos, web-browsing while listening music, I haven't done any heavy stuff yet. But everything has been fast and smooth so far and I don't feel I need to add another 4GB RAM anytime soon. The Internet button is convenient. I push it to check email and browse the web for a short time after I come home from work during the weekdays. During the weekend I always keep the laptop on and put it in the sleep mode when not using. It wakes up quickly and wireless connection hasn't failed once. As this is my home pc, I disabled the touchpad. I always use a wireless mouse instead. I'm much more confortable placing the screen farther from my eyes than my arms reach, and this way also allows me to have a cup of tea or coffee and a snack or desert plate between the laptop and me, not worrying about spills and splashes. So far I'm very happy with my new Vaio.

I saw many laptops include Apple and Dell. They are all more than $2000. But the picture of Sony F laptop is sooo sharp and make me shock! My model is SOVPCF23JFXB which is different with this one. But basic hardware and software are the same. I NEVER had such experience to use this kind of computer. My sony computer was designed for game. I found that it is not good for game. It very good for home theater.

The shortcoming is that sony default setting using intel graphic card to save energy. I turned it on and updated the software by clicking "Sony update". Guess what, the result is amazing!

I researched my laptop purchase extensively before I shelled out my hard-earned cash, and for the price, this is the most bang for your buck in a souped-up laptop (i7 Quad Processor, 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, usb 3.0, blu-ray...). While I'm not a gamer, I am a power-user nonetheless. This model has a great (customizable in the Control Panel) backlit keyboard...essential for a DJ or in flight...no other laptop in this price range has it...Plus, it's beautiful and angular, and really stands out among the 'plasticky-looking' models in it's class. Do yourself a favor and throw a 4GB memory card into your cart for $22 (here on amazon [Corsair 4 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory CMSO4GX3M1A1333C9])...remove the memory cover on the bottom, and there's an empty slot right there waiting for it, (it snaps right in with no tools) and it doubles your memory and speed instantly.

I also swapped out the spinning harddrive with a no-moving parts 120 GB Solid State Drive ($99 at Tigerdirect) and this baby is really zippy, and generates almost no heat...I can't hear the fan at all. With the SSD, this laptop is actually cool to the touch...30 seconds to boot Windows 7, less than 2 seconds to open any Office app, about 4 seconds for Photoshop. All the software/drivers you need for a new install is at Sony.com, and even though it took some time, it's worth it and pretty easy.

All and all I am quite happy...my last Viao lasted three years of DJ nights and days of Adobe and Office...the fan was so loud, you could hear it from across the room. This new F Series is almost silent, the 1080p HD is gorgeous, and I can actually hear great sound from the speakers (Can't say that about my macbook pro)...Love it!

I never owned a Sony laptop before I bought this one. All the research I did on this laptop before I bought it said that it's a great computer. Even the feedback here on Amazon shows that people are happy with their purchase.

Here's the problem I had with mine. It would lockup and windows would give me a blue screen error saying that it was shutting down to prevent damage to my computer. This would happen at random times when I was using software programs; and it would also happen when the laptop was sitting idle with no software running. I spent 2 days researching what could be causing this problem. Some of my research showed that it could be a hardware problem and other research showed it could be software related. So the big question was: Is this something my software caused or did it come with this problem from the factory.

I deleted all my programs and files and reinstalled windows (Using a copy of Windows that I purchased from Staples). That didn't fix the problem. So I chatted with Amazon customer service and without hesitation they agreed to send me another laptop (same model) and pay for the original laptop to be sent back to them. That's great! Amazon definitely knows how to take care of customers. I'm very happy with how Amazon helped me.

So the new laptop arrived a few days later. To make a long story short; I had the same problems again. Again I hopped on chat with Amazon customer service and they said since I am having the same problem with both laptops that it would be best to refund my money and they will take a look at their entire batch of this model of Sony laptops to see if they all have the same problem.

Again, I'm very happy with how Amazon helped me with this problem. They even refunded my original shipping costs. So Amazon lost money on the deal. But they made sure I was taken care of.

I ended up purchasing a Samsung laptop with most of the same features that the Sony had. I've been running it for almost a week now and have not had the blue screen error at all. So I'm pretty sure the problem was with the Sony laptop.

My advice: Check with Amazon to see if they have inspected this batch of Sony laptops before buying one. But don't worry if you have a problem; Amazon with take care of you.

No hdmi connection. The computer does anything else that I need it to do. I usually have at least 5 applications or sites open at a time and the speed is just fine. Picture is good. No out of the ordinary problems with the computer.

Lenovo Helix 11.6" i5 4GB 180GB Notebooks

I purchased this exact i5 Helix pre-launch from an Ebay reseller so I've had about a month of use with it. If you don't already know from watching one of those brief Helix ads, it's a tablet convertible laptop with dual batteries. I'll skip all the specs and go to my experience.

First of all, I come from using a Surface RT, Razer Blade, and self-built PCs. I sold my Surface RT and Razer Blade to pursue my journey of finding my ultimate device to augment my work. Razer Blade was incredibly fast and powerful, but it was too big, gets too hot on the lap, and looks unprofessional. The Surface RT's kickstand is a pain to use on a lap. It keeps falling over and it's ARM processor doesn't allow for freedom of programming languages. I have to use Python and Visual Basic for financial modeling. The Helix fixes all these issues for me of course. Design-wise, I believe it to be the best implementation of a convertible so far. I'll list the negatives though.

The touchpad is frustrating. The usual Thinkpad buttons are gone and the whole pad is allowed to be touched to move the pointer. That's a problem because when I click, I tend to move my finger. I would ultimately start dragging things or clicking the wrong links. Lowering the sensitivity helps but it really shouldn't be that troublesome. Lowering sensitivity obviously makes it less responsive, such as touching the touchpad slightly to the side of your finger won't be registered if sensitivity is too low.

Two-finger scrolling is terribly unresponsive and unusable. I have since switched to one-finger scroll with the circular gesture. I find the one-finger scroll to respond enough of the time to work effectively. However, it is no match to a MacBook's touchpad's two-finger scroll response. I wish they got this right.

Fan is always on. Don't get me wrong, the fan is not noisy compared to something like the Razer, but it's strange that it has not turned off while I just type this review. I can't really figure out how to install TPfancontrol for the Helix. Some help would be appreciated.

The upper right corner of screen/tablet can get pretty hot. It's not too much trouble for me since I usually work on my lap and there is no heat from the keyboard.

The battery life is great but it's nothing like the Surface RT. The Surface RT claims 8 hour battery life. Lenovo claims 10 for the Helix. Well, if both were playing videos, I'm sure the Surface RT would last longer. The Helix drains quicker. The battery life is still phenomenal for a device this powerful, and I haven't needed to charge at work yet. However, I watch my battery life closer with the Helix than I did with the Helix. I drain the keyboard battery so quickly. I understand it is a trade-off though. The Helix has a much nicer display and I can definitely attach an external monitor or TV to the Helix. I would experience horrible, unusable lag if I did that with the Surface.

Next problem may be a Windows 8 issue. Because the Helix is 1080p and only 11.6", everything is pretty small. If I try to get Windows to enlarge icons, text, etc., fonts and pictures would look blurry. I haven't found a solution to this yet except keeping to the default smaller settings.

Next issue is the price. For about $1700, this is extremely expensive. I LOVE the design but I start to doubt whether it's really worth the price. I love a small tablet PC that I can work on in bed with a fantastic feeling keyboard. One alternative is the Thinkpad Tablet 2 which I tried in a store and it was pretty awesome. I actually prefer the design of the Tablet 2 over the Helix. It is so small and Lenovo designed a beautiful case for it. The problem with it is that I cannot adjust the screen angle, hdd space is limited, keyboard trackpoint is annoying, and the performance of the processor with multiple screens is dubious. However, as a simple programming and office device, I could see myself happy with the Tablet 2. For now, I still think the Thinkpad Helix is possibly the best business laptop, but I would love a slimmed down version that's even thinner and cheaper.

I am a loyal Thinkpad user and using Helix since mid May. It is a design failure! Screen top cover is attached to the rest of the tablet by clips and there is no screw like solid element that ensures a solid connection. Because the screen is little bit flexible, in every little twist on screen the clips comes off and there is an opening "in to" your screen. Every time it happens, it becmes more likely to happen again. In my case, in the first week clips started to come off, in four weeks it came to a point that the whole bottom side(keyboard connection side) of the screen cover came off and some connections are effected in a way that screen is broken. Just be careful with that item.

I was a loyal Thinkad user(this is my 4th thinkpad) and I will not buy thinkpad anymore. I was out of country when all those things happened, and Helix was not defined in the Lenovo of that country although it is a country of warranty covers. Just because of that I can't return the item on time and "Helix not being defined in a coutntry that Lenovo warranty covers" becomes the reason for not being able to return the item regarding a problem from day 1. I will use a refurbished item for a 2000+ laptop because of a problem from first week just because "business" laptop's company didn't defined "Helix" internationally yet.

I wish I had time to write a comprehensive review but here is the bottom line. I sell over 1,000 PCs and Notebooks a year and have been doing it since 1987. This is the most impressive machine I've had the pleasure of working with in many, many ways.

It's solidly built. The screen is super bright and sharp. It's touch and it has a stylus for jotting notes and marking up documents and presentations. It boots super fast and it runs just as fast (mine is the i7 version but can't be much of a noticeable difference). It presents no compromises as a notebook or as a tablet.

If you fly a lot you will appreciate the battery life which got me to Europe with power to spare. Also by detaching the tablet, turning it 180 degrees around and re-attaching it to the keyboard base you get a tablet that will sit at a 30 degree angle on your trey table. Much easier to manage than a typical tablet sitting flat.

The only weakness I found is not the machine's fault Windows 8 remains a struggle for me. It's a great touch OS but going back and forth between "Metro" applications and the traditional desktop and non-Metro applications is a bit painful. That is probably more my lack of experience than anything but it's definitely an issue for me at this stage.

It's expensive but it's worth the money in my opinion. Not affordable for everyone but neither is a BMW. If you are looking for a flexible travel machine that doubles as a notebook and tablet, the Helix is what I would recommend.

Bought two of these and they delivered them 6/4/2013 they are exactly as advertised, bought another one today and some additional accessories. A tablet with a docking base, great keyboard when docked, have not had time to mess with the onscreen keyboard or windows 8 much yet but they seem fine at first glance. The only complaint I have about them is that there is no specific docking station so you have to use the USB 3.0 Dock for using two monitors and it does not charge the unit so you have to still plug in the power cord and of course they are not what you would call value priced at least for now. If you take the time to research what you are buying you will find this is exactly as advertised. This is probably by far the best convertible on the market currently.

Expensive yes, but its a great laptop. No Haswell is not a huge problem as the battery runs 9 hrs as is. Keyboard far better than another hybrid option. Its is a great laptop and a solid tablet. Everything else has a stronger bias, such as the Lenovo Yoga which is great laptop but a mediocre tablet. Or the Microsoft Surface devices, which are very nice tablets but really so-so as tablets. The Helix does both extremely well. Its somewhat overpriced, but if you really want the laptop/ultrabook in one (as many travelers do) and don't want do use two machines to do it (laptop plus tablet) this is the best option on the market today.

Lenovo ThinkPad T60 1952-AP2 15-Inch Notebook - Black

I choose the ThinkPad due to my using several of them at work in a state government job. This unit arrived ready to work, I downloaded the programs I needed and was off and running without a hitch. The price was about 25% of what I would pay for a new unit and it had Windows XP instead of the dreaded Windows 7. So far so good.

Looking forward to a model of a computer I had used in the past and loved. I was pleased that this was coming directly from Amazon. The condition was marked new which I found odd since this was refurbished. However, there was a gaping hole in the back where the battery was supposed to be and no battery to be found in the packaging. Couldn't call so I am returning it and may not try again with a refurbished model.

I purhased this refurbished laptop because I did not want a Dell. However, when I got this laptop the battery was dead for about two days. Afterwards,I finally got the battery to work but it kept shutting down randomly and the air blowing out of the cooling fan smelled. About two weeks later the screen flickered and the computer shut down. After a week and a half of this, I took it to a technician and she tested the CPU and said it was going bad. I am now replacing this laptop with a current model. My advice is do not purchase refurbished laptops because it is possible that it could be damaged inside!

Acer 15.6" Intel i3-2310M 2.10 GHz 500GB Notebook | AS5750-6421

I bought this laptop as a post birthday gift for my man and I can say it was totally worth the saving. Since it is almost our 7th year together, I wanted to gift him something that he would really love! Acer was one of the first brands that came up with the latest intel 2nd generation core series processors and I found this one with more options in the price that suits my pocket. The delivery was finely on time, nothing unusual happened.

I would like to add the things I like most in the laptop and these are also the things that I didn't find in other laptops of the same price range. I don't use it everyday, so it is based on my experience with the laptop and the things that he agrees too. First of all, I just love the keypad; it's very user-friendly and I practically could work faster when I used it. ( I am a freelance writer so I do a lot of typing :p)

Secondly, the upper side of the laptop, which may not be very apparent from the pictures here, is textured. This makes the surface scratch and shock proof and makes it look extremely elegant in comparison to the laptops with glossy finishes.

The laptop is so lightweight that I can literally place it on my laps, sit in the couch and work for hours (I did it!).

Right now, I can't think of anything that I'd point as a minus one for this smart device. The only thing I experienced the other day and my man agreed too, is that when you use it while charging on your laps, keep your hands off the HDMI port because it may give you a very minor (you may not even notice it) electric shock. It's better to use the laptop on the table or any wooden surface while charging it. It also can be avoided you are in contact with anything that doesn't conduct electricity within.

He bought a Targus bag from a retail store for the laptop and it is till day serving great. He has a desktop PC with 22" LED, core i5 and other stuff but all he uses now is this laptop! I am so happy that it turned out just the perfect gift for him!

He is an average user and seeing him using it for almost 2 months now, I would definitely recommend it.

This laptop has everything I need--light weight, long battery life (more than 4 hours), a huge and beautiful screen, fast speed, much less crap software compare to my Toshiba Notebook, and a perfect keyboard which allows you to type very fast once you get use to it. And it doesn't get hot. All of those features only for $520 makes it a great deal.

I want to mention that if you need to make the laptop to display other language such as Japanese, Chinese etc. like I do, you don't need to download anything, just do: Control panel-clock language and region-change the date, time or number format-administrative-change system locale and choose the language, and windows will then restart and update it automatically.

Alright, I have a major revision to the review that I previously wrote originally. The HP Laptop (which seemed nice at first) had to be returned for an exchange. The reason? The 650 Gig Hard drive stopped working after six days, because it was defective.

I got the blue screen of death when booting up Windows. At first, I thought it was a software crash. But, after using HP Tools in the Boot Manager, to conduct a hardware examination, I soon learned the hard drive was failing. I was shocked. I've never had this happen before with any computer or hard drive I've purchased new. That's why I've revised my rating for this product down to two stars.

I was sort of lucky because the little bugger stopped working within the 14 day return period. But, I ache for the customers who may not be so lucky. So far, I'm crossing my fingers with this replacement laptop. After a few disk self tests (DST) in the HP boot manager, everything seems kosher (but, again, I'm waiting to see.)

As I said previously, I currently own both an HP Netbook and this model.

My original review about the pluses for this machine remain unchanged. In my current line of work, I use my laptop to write articles for an online media publication. I'm guilty of falling asleep while using my laptop. When I was using, just my netbook, it could get searing hot, despite internal fan. For the most part, the 1260 remains cool to the touch.

This model is outfitted with a roomy 640 Gig hard drive (barring defects), a 4 gig RAM memory and a large 17" LED screen. I liked that the keyboard is nice and roomy. I can complete my articles without fearing that the mouse will reposition itself onto another part of the screen while I'm writing an article. The touchpad mouse can be turned on and off (with a button in the left corner). You can even scroll and adjust the zoom using the touch pad. On the right side of the keyboard, there is also a number pad, for accountants, mathematicians, etc; to complete their tasks.

There's also a HDMI plug (cord has to be purchased separately) to hook up with your HDTV. Additionally, there is a SD memory slot (for photographers who like snapping pictures) to easily upload pics to your computer. There are three total USB ports and an internal DVD-R drive.

The HP G7 also comes with a full, customizable version of Windows 7. No backup disk is included with this laptop, so be sure to create one when you first receive your laptop with the HP Recovery Manager. The manager will only allow you to create one full copy (which is four DVDs total). The machine only comes with an evaluation version of Microsoft Office and a 90-day evaluation copy of Norton Antivirus.

I'm going to nitpick, again, here, in spite of its positive features, the speaker quality is sub par. For music lovers who listen to Pandora, watch YouTube or like listening to music on their laptop, the stereo surround sound quality (from Altec Lansing) is poor. I've had similar problems with my HP Netbook, and thought by upgrading I'd get better speaker quality. Not the case. It also comes with a webcam.

The gray case is plain, imo, not so much shiny silver, but a muted charcoal gray. Not very flashy or trendy, if you're looking for your computer to be artsy. I plan on getting a sticker cover to customize mine.

With this model, you'll also have a one year HP warranty. Keep on your toes... you just might need it.

I want to warn customers to make sure that you have copies of your UPC code (don't throw away the box like I almost did). Keep copies of your original receipt on hand in a safe place just in case you have to exchange. Also, do a system diagnostics when you first purchase this machine (hitting the "ESC" after setting up Windows (on reboot). Select the "F2" key from the menu and conduct a system diagnostics to see if your hard drive and other hardware are in good condition.

I have owned this laptop for a week now. The processor and memory combination exceed my expectation and needs! This laptop replace my three year old Dell Inspiron 1525, the LED back-light is wonderful, colors and and brightness have improved dramatically. The computer runs cool all of the time and fan noise is minimal. The keyboard is going to take getting used to, being flat with the numeric pad on the right, I need to learn where the keys have moved from my old laptop. Battery life is easily 3.5 hours. My only concerns are the DVD drive door seems to be loose (not really a big deal), the other concern is the sound on this machine seems to be a little muffled, but that is something I think I will get used to. I would recommend this to a friend.

I was a little concerned about the HP reputation as being described as many complaints on HP Customer Service. But as of over 2 months of use it performs very well and because of this I have not dealt with their Customer Service. It can't be any worse than Dell's CS.

The keys and pad are quiet, no loud clicking and very soft. Long battery life for a 17 monitor. The only thing that I dislike is the mouse pad, as it is not visible and a bit of getting used to, but my daughter has not even noticed. Fan runs as needed buht not that you notice any noise except on startup......I a not going to bore you with the specs as they are easily found under product description. Basically the same specs as any other 17.3 laptop that has a i-3 Intel CPU. The only other thing I can think of is that you need to watch the price and try to catch it on sale. This HP model is no WalletMart HP, it's much better equipped.

This is a very nice laptop at a good price. I bought this one for a friend and He's delited with it. He's a programmer so in Linux works blazing fast. Also in its original OS works great because the amount of RAM and the processor.

This computer was a great purchase. I love the size, design, and speed of this model. The only thing I would change is the keypad, the buttons seem to have a little blur to them if you look closely, but my other Dell had the same keys.

I have bought Dells for over 20 years. My last Dell laptop has been in use for 12 years without any problems. The Dell before that is still in the house as a backup for 16 years. So when I broke down and bought my 10th grade daughter her first laptop this year for Christmas the choice was not which brand but which Dell. I decided on the 14R because it was on sale with the i3 processor, the 6GB memory and the large harddrive. She opens it up on Christmas morning and it crashed the first three times she turned it on. I guess Dell has replaced the "blue screen of death" with a black screen of death. Check disk errors, can't find the OS, and the charger sent with the unit is not capable of charging the battery to its full capacity. The unit will slow accordingly. SLOWER because the charger won't charge the battery. Seriously? I was able to salvage Christmas by at least getting it running and I replaced the cover with the pink top, but I was pissed that not only had I blown it for Christmas but Dell had let me down, BIG TIME.

Bought it on a Sunday and the adapter wouldn't charge. To Dell's credit, they sent a tech out the next day who replaced the motherboard and power supply. About the only original part left was the RAM. Dell even game me another 3 months on the warranty as a consolation.

ASUS N81Vp-D2 14-Inch Brown Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium)

While searching for the ideal laptop for myself, I found that all laptops seem to have huge trade-offs. This one is no exception. I chose it because it packed a relatively fast CPU and a decent graphics card into a very portable PC. Every other laptop I found with discrete graphics was a lot heavier, and most were pricier. The trade-off here (as with all laptops that have fast CPU's and discrete graphics) is that battery life is far from impressive. Unfortunately, there is no 9-cell (more powerful) battery available. Based on the location of the battery on the bottom of the laptop, I don't think there ever will a more powerful (and larger) option.

Performance on this is great. Windows 7 is extremely responsive, audio production software runs smoothly, and game performance is even better than I expected Dragon Age Origins looks beautiful at the screen's max resolution with most graphics settings somewhere between medium and high. I haven't tried editing video yet, but based on what I've seen so far, I don't expect any performance issues. If you're just planning to browse the web and work on spreadsheets, documents, etc. this may be overkill for you. You would probably have no problems on a cheaper machine with a slower CPU, without discrete graphics, and with longer battery life.

Speaking of battery life, it is pretty short, but I find it to be usable. Asus added a dedicated button for switching power profiles. Switching to battery-saving mode gives a significant boost over high-performance and entertainment modes. I haven't done extensive testing, but it seems that battery-saving mode will get you 4-5 hours of web browsing and other light work, while entertainment mode might let you watch one movie before you need to search for an outlet. Depending on how and where you expect to use your laptop, this may or may not be a problem. In high-performance mode, hot air blows out of the right side, but the bottom doesn't get hot enough to burn laps.

In response to other feedback I've seen:

It's been said that the touch-pad buttons are stiff. I don't find this to be the case at all. They seem quite comfortable to me, my girlfriend, and my mother.

Another reviewer mentioned having issues using the touch-pad scroll. The part about scrolling not stopping without an extra touch is a non-issue. This an intentional behavior that can be changed or turned off in settings. However, the part about having to hit the line is a very real issue. The problem is that the outer edges (maybe 1/4") of the pad do not respond to touch. You don't need to hit the line exactly, but you do need to make sure you're not right at the edge, which frequently requires a look. This is the most annoying problem I have with the n81vp.

Keyboard quality and noise is fine. It's comfortable to type on. It's not silent, but not noticeably loud either.

The function key is where most people would expect 'control' to be, but after a few weeks with the laptop, I find myself getting used to this.

In summary, the Asus N81VP-D2 is great for audio production, multimedia work, gaming, and most other demanding tasks.

It's a waste of money for more casual users and no good if you need long battery life.

I have to agree with the previous reviewer that this is one superb notebook. I was also looking for a notebook that is not too large (15" and above) nor too small and underpowered (12" and less). In the 13" and 14" range, I pretty much narrowed it down to ASUS and Dell Studio XPS 13". I own a two-year old Dell XPS 13", which had its motherboard replaced twice in two years due to heat issues (this seems to be a very common problem with Dell XPS 13" line and Dell doesn't seem to acknowledge it or actively try to find a solution). Bestbuy has Dell Studio XPS 13" at about the same price as this ASUS, but with only one-year warranty. As can be expected, I am hesitant to make a purchase due to my past experience.

ASUS is fast and stable with Windows 7. The machine looks and feels well built. Furthermore, the machine stays cool even under heavy use. The small complaints I have are that it doesn't come with dedicated media keys/buttons, and the keyboard definitely feels different from that of Dell and takes some getting used to. Certainly, I am not faulting ASUS for these. A good thing is that you are getting a bargain buying from Amazon. I was in Taiwan last December the same ASUS model sold there for roughly US$1,300 when you would expect a lower price because ASUS is a Taiwanese brand. I guess Amazon's trade volume must entitle it to a huge discount.

I regret purchasing this computer; it really is not worth the price compared to others on the market now. I have also had some issues with the computer itself. If you Google "ASUS N81 crash" you will find that many people are experiencing random system crashes, especially when trying to do any gaming at all on this computer. There is a possible hardware issue that causes the crash, which many assume to be from the ATI Mobility card, but ASUS has not acknowledged it.

I sent my machine back to ASUS for repairs due to all the random system crashes I experienced; it was updated as "Repaired" and assigned a tracking number the day after received. I called and they said no issues were found with my computer. I called several times and left my number several times, but they would never let me speak with a supervisor, and a supervisor would not call me back. I got my computer back and found that they had removed all the AMD/ATI software from the machine, but didn't make any mention of this on their notes. There is a problem with either the graphics card and/or its software. I did a full reformat and fresh install and got rid of all the ATI and AMD software except for the driver, and my system no longer crashes. The WLAN card included is also really weak. I replaced mine with a Gigabyte GN-WI07HT-RH that I had in an older machine, and it gets much better connection. The hard drive is a Seagate Momentus 7200.4. Just google the name of the hard drive and you see what a piece of crap it is. It's a noisy, clunky hard drive; I guess I will replace it with a Hitachi drive on my own dime. No real reason to RMA it for the loud Seagate because it seems like it's the product itself that is a joke, not just mine.

This computer has had issues with multi-tasking. It locks up and requires a full reboot. When I watch stream feeds, I have to reboot 3-4 times in a 2 hour period. I have a netbook that performs better than this computer. It's pretty much a piece of crap.

I experienced terrible customer service, a poor warranty/repair department, and unaddressed shutdown issues make this a computer to avoid, in my opinion. I have purchased three ASUS laptops in the past three years, but after the experience with this one, it will be my last.

When I purchased this laptop I had several criteria

1) Powerful enough to last my family 3 years at least

2) Enough gaming power to do light gaming

3) Portable I didn't want a 17", I wanted 14-15"

4) A maximum of around $1000

5) A quality name/warranty this is a laptop afterall

1) Power The "windows experience" rating is 5.8 but that is due to the replaceable hard drive. The Processor got 6.4, the graphics 6.7. While the stated max of the motherboard is 4gb RAM, its reported to handle up to 8gb. No this isn't one of the lasted i7 or i5 processors but its a very powerful dual-core and if you aren't doing media editing this will last a long time.

2) Gaming I have Dragon Age running at max details and it doesn't even skip a beat. The specs call the graphics chip a HD4650, the sticker says HD4670. The only difference between the two is clock speed, and this is clocked as a 4650. You could over clock it but I don't see the need yet. This isn't a laptop for hardcore gamers but it can play hardcore games.

3) Portable this is a 14" laptop with desktop replacement hardware! Of course the downside is the tiny battery can't keep up. I'd suggest buying a spare battery or staying near an outlet.

4) When I got this laptop it was 1000 w/ a 100 dollar rebate, its gone up a bit but its still a steal!

5) Most laptop companies give a 1 year hardware failure warranty. Asus gives a 2 year hardware and 1 year accidental damage. Oh and Asus laptops are much more reliable than HP/Dell/Gateway ones.

I have ordered this laptop in January 2012 thru Amazon. The delivery was on time as stated on the order form. This laptop has all the features and the specs I wanted. It is very light that you can take anywhere you go without complaining abouth the weight. The other feature that I like was the thickness, it is less than 1" and sound from the Left and Right JBL speakers was really owesome. With the specs I have selected; 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-2640M, 8 GB DIMM, 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive using internet was never been so fast. I would recommend this product to everyone who like to have a high end Laptop at a very affordable cost.

I must have looked at 100 different laptop models before finally going with the Dell XPS X14z. At first I had lots of recommendations for a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro, and I nearly went that direction, but in the end the Dell offered me a bit more punch for a better price. Coming from an HP laptop, I immediately appreciated the higher quality build of the laptop body, the better keyboard, and the much nicer trackpad. The 14" size is perfect for travelers that don't want to be on a cramped keyboard. The laptop is attractive, but I don't feel like you're paying extra for style here. Here are my pros and cons:

Compact and lightweight, but doesn't feel cheap

USB connections in the back keep cables out of your way

Fast boot up and wake up from sleep

Responsive trackpad

Runs quieter and much cooler than other Core i7 laptops I've tested

Cons

Audio and mic jacks are a bit stiff

I wish the screen resolution was a bit higher

No option for a matte screen

Quite a bit of pre-installed stuff that you don't want or need

Not one USB port on the side, so you using thumb drives makes you have to reach to the back

Overall this is a fantastic laptop. It's cons are heavily outweighed by its pros and the complaints I do have are quite minor in the first place. This is a great everyday laptop and it handles PC gaming well enough to give you something to use on the go when you're not on your more powerful desktop. It handles design work okay, but if you're doing it professionally, I'd find something with a bit higher resolution screen.

In the end, I'm really happy I went this direction instead of the Apple and Samsung laptops as I got a much higher price to performance value.

I've owned a ton of Dells over the years with this being 5th Dell laptop and 4th in the XPS line of laptops. I used to own a Dell XPS 14 (the original 2010 model, not the 2012 model) which was one of the worst laptops I had ever owned. It was so bad that Dell eventually sent me a 15z (the bigger screen version of the 14z) as a replacement laptop after 7 repairs on the XPS 14. After nagging Dell for a couple of days, they sent me a 14z instead. I've owned the 14z for about two weeks now, and I have to say this is by far the best laptop I've ever owned.

For the amount of hardware you get, this thing is TINY. It's basically about the same size as a MacBook Pro, yet it packs a full 2.80 GHz i7 with discrete graphics that can be switched off to save battery power. You can also go up to a 750GB 7200 RPM HDD and 8GB of RAM. Mine came with a 500GB drive and 6GB of RAM, which is perfectly fine for me.

Screen: In terms of dimensions, this is simply the thinnest screen I've seen on a notebook. Its ridiculously thin. I would rate the color production and overall quality as above average though. Its definitely not the best display out there on laptops, but its not bad either. I use a external monitor for all my media stuff (gaming, movies, etc) so I don't frat much about screen quality. It's good enough.

Performance: Its kind of hard to tell peroformance specs between PCs but I would have to say that the 14z with a 2.8GHz i7 definitely "feels" faster than my previous laptops, which either had a Core i5 2410m (2.3GHz) or a Core i5 560M (2.67GHz). Everything loads up very quickly and never seems to lag. I haven't run any high end games yet but have played HD videos while running some old school games like Need For Speed Carbon and Most Wanted. In both cases, the i7 and GT520M held their own just fine. The hard drive performs as well as any 7200RPM drive and overall system boot-up is fairly quick.

Keyboard and Trackpad: This is one of the two categories that separates the good from the great laptops to me. Usually, Dell gets the keyboard right as I had experienced with my four previous Dell laptops. This one...not so much. The chicklet style keyboard is a nice upgrade to the XPS lineup but the keys are a bit hard when compared to something like a MacBook Pro keyboard. It is, however, something that you get used to after a few days of use. The trackpad, on the other hand, is nice. For a windows laptops that have notoriously small trackapds, this thing has a decent sized trackpad that squeezes out every inch it can from the 13.3 inch form factor. I will say that the trackpad is a bit over-sensitive at times and you may need to mess around with the settings to make it work the way you want. Overall, the keyboard and trackpad to me are both above average. Nothing special but more than good enough.

Battery Life: This is the other deciding factor in terms of how good a laptop is. Keep in mind that this laptop comes with an i7 and discrete graphics, so you can't really expect great battery life here. The question is whether or not its good enough for your needs. Overall, I'm seeing anywhere from 2.5 to about 4 hours of battery life depending on settings and usage, which is about expected. I would've liked to see 3.5 to 5 hours, but 4 hrs of usage with screen dimmed down a bit and a few power saving options enabled isn't bad for the hardware package I'm getting.

Noise and Heat: To me, this category has always been the downfall of the XPS line. I have yet to own a single XPS that doesn't get loud or hot. My XPS 14 got so hot that it started melting the paint off the palmrest. While the heat issues are far far less with this laptop, they are still there. My suggestion is buying a laptop cooling pad, which is something to consider buying with any expensive laptop. Spending 20 or 30 bucks to protect a three figure investment makes sense to me. Either way, noise (especially the back fan) and heat are definitely issues with this model and I would bet my money that its an issue with all of Dells high end notebooks. You should be fine if you don't mind providing the laptop with some extra cooling, but don't expect this notebook to be ultra-quiet or ultra cool.

Peripherals and sound: Dell used to use JBL speakers in the older XPS lineup, which had incredible sound for laptops. This one, unfortunately, doesn't use the same speaker technology. Still, the sound is good enough for a laptop. I imagine most people with laptops are carrying around a pair of headphones like me and only use their speakers for when trying to watch something with a group of people, and the speakers on this unit are perfect for tasks like that.

As far as the peripherals go, this unit is a bit short on USB ports and yes most of the ports are in the back. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask. My in-home setup includes a monitor, a USB dongle for a keyboard, a usb adapter for some external speakers, and a few other cables that are escaping my mind right now. Basically, I have no choice but to use a USB hub anyways, so I don't really mind having just 2 USB ports, neither do I mind having the ports in the back as it keeps my desk really clean. If you're the type that will switch USB in and out all the time, then I can see how having the ports in the back can get annoying though.

Overall, this is solid buy at the right price. If you're paying anything more than 900 bucks for it, its probably too much given Dell has already come up with its successor. At the right price, this is a great deal since fewer and fewer laptops nowadays offer small form factor notebooks with full performance specs like this laptop offers.

I actually bought this laptop from Costco but felt that it would be good to put my review up here too. My purchase price was $1000 and overall I am pretty happy with this laptop.

I'm going to college next year and it was important to me that I get a high performance laptop that wouldn't be too cumbersome for me to take around to classes. After using it for about a month, there are really good and aspects but some shortcomings.

Good:

i7 processer. you're not going to get any better at this price range. just a heads up, it is not the newest 3rd gen i7 processor that apple is putting into their macbook pros.

750g hardrive. Honestly, I don't really care for SSD's because anything less that 300 gigs is completely unacceptable in my opinion just because I don't want to carry around a portable hardrive that I could easily lose or break. With the xps 14z, you get plenty of memory

14in. display in a 13.3 inch case: this is really awesome. Not only has dell removed the annoying black bevel that you usually get around most laptops, their shuriken screen has also allowed them to make the screen SUPER thin. some reviews say that you have a hard time seeing the whole screen but for me, that was only in very intense sunlight. When working outside at say Starbucks for example, I only had to up the brightness a little and I was fine. Also, there really is no need for full HD graphics on a laptop with a 14 in screen.

Graphics: I know that college is about studying but I want to have some fun too. I wanted a graphics card that would be able to handle easy to moderate level gaming. I was able to play Skyrim on moderate settings without any problems, even with other applications running in the background.

Dimmensions: obviously this is dell's attempt at a macbook pro and I have to say that they did pretty well. The computer is super sleek and appealing to the eye. Most impressively, they've been able to keep the laptop to under an inch in height.

Backlight: love this feature, really helpful and the sensor knows exactly when you do and don't need it

Speakers: bass is non existant but there is really no distortion even when blasting linkin park at maximum volume

Bad:

ports in back: ALL of the ports are in the back which makes plugging and unplugging usb's difficult without standing up. Also, you only get 2 usb ports which means you're probably going to be plugging and unplugging things a lot if you're going to be using this at home too.

heating: during normal use, this laptop is really cool and comfortable to use. Once you start running some higher workload programs such as Skyim or Adobe Premiere etc, you're really going to feel the heat in your left palm rest. Also the fan is noticible. This also happens when you open several programs or many web pages. Normal use however (4-6 moderate workload programs) is totally fine and the fan and heat are not even noticible.

webcam: basically, with such a thin screen, you're not going to get anywhere near HD quality

So that's about it, it's a great computer and I feel like it's going to serve me well in these few years to come. It was a little pricey compared to other products out there but I was willing to pay the price for a higher quality computer. Don't bother yourselves with ultrabooks and the such, this laptop really is the way to go

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5308 15.6" Laptop

I cannot leave a five star, but for < $500 it was my preferred choice. This computer will sell between $450 and $650(do some online research). My main choices of CPU were I5, A6 in that order. Compared the Toshiba side by side for mechanical features at an electronics store. Initial dislike of Toshiba was the touch mouse pad. It has become more smooth with additional usage. While lowering or closing the top of the laptops, Asus and Gateway went into hibernate mode before the screen was halfway closed. The Toshiba would go into hibernate mode when lowered 90% of the way(the wife likes you to show some respect by closing the laptop). The keyboard touch is excellent, smooth, and quiet. The screen is great with color and clarity. The video itself is good for 4Gb Ram, but high end gamers will not agree with the graphics(they usually do custom computers). I can spend $20 to expand it to 6GB(search the internet and you will find a good deal on memory). My main concern so far is the disk drive. There is a sensor and timer in the electronics that performs a check exactly every 10 minutes(it is a medium click sound,and lasts 2 seconds). This noise does not occur when playing a DVD movie, and movie glitches did not occur). I still need to try the HDMI port to check a feature larger screen(another feature I liked when looking, and I saw the feature on another PC in the store). The graphite color and surface does not show smudges or fingerprints. The mouse buttons are loud, and may not be good while your wife is sleeping(but wait). There is a button in the center just below the space bar, that will allow you to disable the touch pad features so that you can use a mouse (your choice). Three USB ports with average distances apart. The audio and mic jacks are on the side of the laptop. And the final feature is the AC plug. It looks like Toshiba is trying to address the problems consumers have had in the past(including me). But, considering the past problems of the AC/Jack, and the noise of the DVD drive, I still want to keep this computer.

It came on time, and works OK.

Toshiba Satellites seem to have a much better long-term track record than many of the other laptops, so I went with this. For the small difference in price, it was well worth going with the i5 processor (over the i3). Not so sure it would have been worth going to an i7. Maybe a little bulky to carry around all day, but it's worth it for the pluses of the 15"+ screen and full size keyboard.

Has everything you NEED, and a few things that you probably WANT. Not a dream machine, but definitely a workhorse.

I purchased this laptop at Best buy. Exactly 13 months after purchase, its parts started failing one after the other. I have already replaced the display panel, had to find alternatives for a defunct audio out jack, unreliable DVD drive and am facing overheating problems. It seems to be an inexpensive product but the cost of getting it repaired after a year or so is a real nightmare. Warranty extension is a must. Thats the only way to shield yourself from problems you will face after one year or so after purchase... due to its poor build quality. Buying this was a big mistake. Will stay away from Toshiba products in the future.

Dell Latitude E6420 14" Notebook - Intel Core I5 I5-2520M 2.50 Ghz

Pretty great laptop. Had no issue whatsoever with the screen like another reviewer said, worked great since day 1 for half a year now. Also installed linux ubuntu 11.10 on it, works like a charm the multitouch on the touchpad in ubuntu also runs great (there's a debian package for that). It's strong, powerful, and despite its tank-like build it's not as heavy as you'd expect. A friend has an older model of the series and 5 years later and a cup of coffee on the keyboard and it still works great.

I'm working on a degree in Computer Science and needed a laptop with good processing capability. After doing some research on the processors out there (I wanted at least an Intel I5), this laptop looked like a good choice for my price-point criteria. It does have good number crunching capabilities, but when I set up a mysql database on it and ran a database intensive program it maxed out the disk drive access (this is easy to monitor in Ubuntu). When I checked the programs running the database queries, I found they were using only small percentage of available CPU power. In other words, this laptop seems to have some IO limitations that keep it from making full use of the CPU (in some applications).

Outside of the IO bottleneck the laptop does fine. The bezel is a bit wide, making the effective screen space smaller, but the screen resolution is decent. As long as my eyes can make out the smaller fonts it is workable. The built in webcam and microphone work well. I tried training the speech recognition software in Windows 7 using the built in mics and it did OK. Perhaps I can use that later to dictate my dissertation...

All in all, I am fairly pleased with the laptop. I spent some time optimizing the database to see if that will help relieving the disk access limitations. We'll see how that works.

I've used this laptop for work, 8+ hrs a day, for the last 18 months, and the thing is a rock. Very stable, fast boot, overall very very happy my employer chose this model. I have had a number of laptops over the last 10 years, inlcuding Lenovo, Toshiba, Dell, Samsung. This is by far the best, even 2 years after it's release. Running Windows 7 Pro 32-bit.

Been using this laptop for over a year now, and it has been rock solid. Great battery life and no hard drive issues. It runs applications quickly whether in Ubuntu 12.x, Windows 7, or even Windows 8. All have run great and without problems. I appreciate the simplicity of the system since it is primarily for business Office applications, browsing, and email. But there is still plenty of power to work in Photoshop, Lightroom, or other photo/video editing software. Gaming is limited by the built-in graphics card, but I'm sure you could find a few goodies to play on it. The primary downside of the system is the screen resolution 1366x768. So be sure to get the HD+ which permits 1600x900.

It also runs a bit hot, but remains silent even when the fans are working hard.

Overall, an aging, but still solid, choice for your business needs and/or limited media work.

Compaq Presario Cq62-215dx Laptop Pc

Picked it up yesterday. i wanted a clean Windows 7 install so i used the HP Recovery Manager. Then chose System Recovery. It rebooted and then gave me the option of a 'minimized image recovery'. This took about 35 minutes with numerous reboots.

Once done I had a nice, fresh OS install with just the necessary stuff (including HP Recovery Manager )

Oh yeah, had 46 updates to install but that's another story. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version. F15 A.

Kudos to HP/Compaq for giving us the option to setup our systems with no bloatware.

Good basic machine for the average user. NO HDMI, webcam, or memory card reader but a lot of folks do not need those frills.

I found this laptop at Bestbuy online Saturday for $299 and had to grab it. I checked every site and it was the best deal for the price. It is a great basic laptop and the AMD V Series I believe is a Sempron which was AMDs way to compete with Intel way back when processors were expensive. I always prefered AMD because they were cheaper and reliable. The Athlons were great, and much cheaper than the Intel Pentium so Intel came up with the Celeron to compete with the lower price Athlon. AMD fired back with the Sempron which was even cheaper yet, and a good over all processor. I kind of got away from the PC world after that so I am not sure how things are now. I think the Celerons never really hit it big, but I can say that my wife's Compaq with the Sempron lasted 5 years with not one issue. She used it daily for normal everyday computing and loved it. We just replaced it a month ago and gave it to our friend who feels it is as good as any newer laptop for surfing, using word and excel, and watching You-Tube. Her only complaint to us has been when she opens up dozens of windows by mistake (being new to the internet) she finds that the Sempron slows up a bit, but as she is learning to get rid of the pop up screens etc. she is not having any problems.

I purchased this CQ62 and when I took it out of the box I was impressed on how quick it was and for what we need it is perfect. As an entry level laptop I highly recommend it. I think I even got 5% cash back by using my Discover Card and a coupon which brought it down to $250 which made it even cheaper. Keep a look out its still on sale in the stores at $299 and backordered online. It is worth it in my opinion. This V series is for my father who does the basic surfing, watching vids, e-mailing etc. and he loves it.

Oh as for my wife, we replaced her Compaq Sempron with an HP G72-B66 because she liked the 17" screen and when I saw that on a promo sale at Staples in November for $475 with an Intel I3 360 processor, 500 GB HD, and 4 GB memory It seemed like a good deal so I grabbed it. She is happy with that also, but is having trouble getting used to the funky mouse pad on these HP G models. other than that it seems like a good laptop for the price. I have been watching these prices and they seem to hover around $550 so I guess we did get a good deal. I know nothing about I3 cores, yada yada compared to AMD Phenem's and they seem to be in the same price range so thats why I decided to try to give the Intel a try.

In conclusion, I think both of these laptops are great. The Compaq serves it needs for the low price, and the HP G72 has more bells and whistles but again it was $200 more but seems to be rated very well. Forgive my long review and my lack of the new technology. LOL, I actually work on the large Mainframe computers and all I knew about these Brands lately is that my Mainframe Changed from Digital to HP, then somhow HP and Compaq became an entity. Thats the extent of my computer exp. Correct me if I am way behind on things.

Purchased this 4545s ProBook at TigerDirect, $500, using Amazon for their gurarantee's 12/25/12.

Bought because: value for the money, non-gloss screen, both Windows 7 pro and Windows 8 operating systems included.

Works well.

Spent some time uninstalling the not needed "extras" HP supplied. Going to have to talk with Microsoft about product key because there is no COA on this machine.

One irritating point: touchpad was a bit centered for tapping. You have to tap more toward the center of the pad than other laptops. I "fixed" this by uninstalling the HP touchpad software. It becomes "normal". If you want the two finger stuff, go over to Synaptics and get the latest download.

Will report back when/if there is anything more to report.

Great laptop and Tigerdirect is a great company. They are responsive if there is an issue and want you to get your product and this product is great. Fast loading, good screen resolution. Not sure about the camera yet as I haven't tried it. The touchpad isn't that great though. Get a mouse. That is my only complaint though. Everything else is great though

This laptop is an amazing value for the price. I purchased mine from HP's online store with the following specs:

The case is very attractive and has a sleek, grey shape.

The cutting-edge AMD "Fusion" processor produces amazingly-smooth graphics (DVDs, Youtube HD videos, Netflix, Hulu, etc). I run complex financial risk simulations on my DV6 laptop, and they complete within seconds. My previous laptop, an Intel Duo Core from Geteway, took minutes to finish the simulations, but this new HP laptop finishes 5x faster!

Naturally, internet browsing is awesome, as web pages seem to open within the blink of an eye. I never realized that an upgraded laptop could make my life so much easier. The laptop is incredibly fast and powerful, yet it produces virtually no heat.

I also watch BluRay movies from a projector connected to my DV6. Again, I have to compliment the amazing graphics capabilities on this laptop; completely smooth video!!

Hulu and Netflix caused my my old Intel Duo-Core laptop to stall and choke, but this new AMD-powered laptop runs completely smoothly on this laptop! If you have broadband internet, you will never see any flickering or missed frames.

At this price, the DV6 is the best value you will find. It runs better and has a better build quality than similar laptops that are usually priced in the $800-$900 range.

HP sent me a defective screen on my new HP laptop. I requested them to replace the computer and they asked me to take a quick-ship model at a higher price. In addition, I have to pay for it first at a higher price with lower specs!! I asked for the manager and they rejected me saying they are busy.

I have bought 4 HP Pavilions over the last 10 years and this is how they repay me. If there are no problems, I am sure HP is fine. The real problem is if there is something wrong and you are stuck with their customer support. After 10 years, I am going with another brand. I have also spent 80 minutes on the phone with no avail.

I have put a similar comment on their HP website. Do you know they exclude the 1-star and 2-star comments from the consumers?!?! Therefore, I thought it is only fair for the consumers to know. If there is something wrong and you have to deal with their customer support, you will literally get the short-end of the stick. Therefore, you should think twice before purchasing from HP.

I have wasted two days of my life dealing them and now I am investing a full-day going through all the HP e-commerce sites to let the consumers know. Good luck with your purchase with HP.....

I just received this computer today and to tell you the truth it is an awesome computer. The display screen is flawless and just gorgious with its brightness. The updates took less then 1hour so it was pretty fast. The A6 quad core works awesome, this computer can handle anything you throw at it with awesome resolution. The speakers are so loud and sound great. The keys are nice and easy to hit, they're not like some computers which has them hard so you have to press pretty hard to use them but rather this once has it just right.

This 500dollar computer out performs a 800dollar computer any day of the week. I purchased this laptop to replace my old Gateway.

The specs of this computer are fantastic!

The 4GB of memory is definitely enough to run most common software. 640GBs of hard drive space is going to take a LONG time to fill.

Unfortunately, the A6-3400M Accelerated Processor isn't at the top of the A6 series, but it will still help you get your tasks done. The higher processors will be found on high-end entertainment machines. I'm still happy with the chipset this laptop comes with!

The AMD Radeon HD 6520G isn't top of the line either, but video quality is still pretty great! As well as gaming, I was able to run World of Warcraft (at high settings), and both Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. at medium settings each.

As far as the way the laptop looks, the glossy black with silver borders looks very classy! Also, I've noticed that it prevents fingerprints on the case. That's a huge plus for me, especially coming from my old laptop which would have my fingerprints EVERYWHERE.

The keyboard looks quite different than you find on most laptops. It's a full-sized keyboard with an island style number pad, which is useful for quick number typing, or whatever else you plan to do. I do have an issue with the keyboard, however: up and down arrows under the right shift key are incredibly small.

The laptop is missing a fingerprint reader, which you can find on the HP DM4 series and higher end DV6s and DV7s. The 6110us doesn't come with integrated Bluetooth either. Something else that a lot of people look for is Beats Audio, which this computer doesn't have. However the built-in Altec Lansing speakers are good stock speakers, which provide decent sound quality and bass.

The Windows 7 Home Premium on this laptop ships with Office 2010 starter, which is nice in some ways. It has Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel, but unfortunately doesn't have all the features as the full version of Office 2010 Home and Student, Home and Business, or Professional. It will do the job if you're just planning on using it for simple tasks.

Aside from the missing features which are found on higher end laptops, this machine has everything I was looking for. I'm a college student and didn't need anything super extravagant. This laptop certainly does the job, and I'm happy with my purchase.

Got the HP-DV6-6110US after a dissatisfied experience with the Toshiba Satellite L755. Returned the satellite and picked this one up. Has a good build quality. The keyboard layout is a bit strange and needs to get used to. Keys feel a bit sticky compared to my macbook(less then half the price who's complaining). The AMD processor takes care of my needs. Surfing, basic pic editing, word documents,netflix streaming and gaming on onlive. A bit too much of bloatware but easily uninstallable. Most of these cheaper laptops have basic Windows 7 which doesnt let you backup to a wireless network drive. Plenty of connectivity options. Cant beat it at the 449 price I got it at the local staples.

Lenovo G570 4334-9MU Laptop, 15.6" 2nd Gen Intel Core i3 Processor, 500GB, 4GB, Webcam, HDMI, Wifi

This computer was very simple for me to set up, took no time at all and I didn't have to pay any techie to do it, just needed to know my wireless password. Simple! Adjusting to its differences from my last laptop has been intuitive.

Aesthetically it's very attractive, contemporary-looking dark brown metallic, much nicer IMO than the black plastic-ridged case of some of the other 4334 series.

I've had it for a couple of months, and still finding it a pleasure to use quick, responsive and easy.

The card reader is a terrific bonus just pull it out of my camera, pop it into the slot in front. The speakers aren't going to thrill audiophiles, but they're certainly fine for normal use.

Only thing that was a bit of a problem was that in shopping for a laptop, Lenovo doesn't have any chart out there that lays out the differences among all the various G570 4334 models, and there are quite a few. In fact, the store where I bought this initially sold me a different 4334! Which is evidence of how Lenovo's model numbering is not at all user friendly. The differences among them are significant: some of them are pentium, some are i3's, some are i5's, with different casing, different other essential specs.

But I am liking it quite a bit, now that I got the one I wanted :)

Asus K50I-RBBGR05 15.6-Inch Widescreen Titanium Notebook - Black

Just received it.

I consider the price in this review.

I am a frugal shopper and a bit of a techy -I'll be putting a Linux partition on it.

$365 delivered, refurb -no signs of why it was refurbished.

I've never owned an ASUS so far I really really like it. Touch pad is a bit touchy -:-) -but slick in that it is integrated into the body. The two finger scrolling and three finger menu is nice but the pad will take some getting used to.

The key board is sensitive as well, the buttons are big, all of which I happen to like; the numbers pad is a big bonus that I really like.

It is wide, like 17", the screen seems larger than your average 15.6". Good resolution. The battery life seems long, but we'll see.

It is lighter than my last Dell.

This is also my first run with the Windows 7 OS so that will take a bit of getting used to as well.

WiFi is fast and strong because of the wireless N -longer distance faster transfer rates.

Overall this laptop seems very solid for the money.

Easy to configure, lots of options, very sleek looking.

I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a budget portable.

I will use it for work/school (I'm a PhD student).

For what you pay this thing is a steal.

I will update as I use it.

[Update] 6 months and still feel the same.

[Update] Over two years old and still going strong. I don't use it hard, but I do take it out of the house a couple of times a week. However, it is one of three devices I use (my tablet and desktop get the most work).

Issues with it:

1) There is a permanent smudge on the screen from stuff wearing off of the touchpad.

2) The Webcam simply failed shortly after my last post. The hardware is fine (no problem using it in Linux partition) it is an ASUS software issue.

3) Power cable is starting to show signs of wear.

4) I could never get used to the delete key placement. Still drives me nuts when typing on it.

Bought for husband as travel-laptop. Just got in today.

Let me say this laptop will be sufficient for some daily use. It is a good laptop for the price. Fast enough ( but not super speedy). Doesnt feel really heavy to me, but then again, I normally carry around a 17 inch dell. Very nice looking. Overall, very good for browsing and email. Probably really good for a student or light to medium usage. Im a heavy user and KILL laptops, so I dont think this one will last too long is you are rough on your laptops. Good specs. Started up out of the box. Would recommend though.

Cons:

-Installed software. There is A LOT of it! Slows down the computer on start up horribly.

-It was FILTHY! I know its refurbished, but at least you could take a can of air and blow out the cat hair and food crumbs (Im literally serious)! Come on, Amazon! If you buy this, purchase some canned air to blow out the keyboard and monitor as it was GROSS! Again as a heavy user, I know a gross laptop, and that one put mine to shame. Im going to have to pop the keys out and scrub with Qtips.

-Small scratches around the monitor. Nothing major, just figured I would mention it because some people are really picky.

-Packaging/Delivery. No bubble wrap or padding whatsoever. Came in a large box ( like a laptop normally would), but just had cardboard to hold in place and skrink wrap to prevent scratching. No padding between keyboard and monitor either. No protection at all (aside of the plastic bag on the outside incase it rained). The box wasnt dented, but if it had been, I worry about what could have happened. Speaking of which, FedEx left it outside on my porch ( in 95 degree heat) when I didnt answer my door (didnt even require a signature I guess), so make sure you are home for your delivery otherwise, someone might walk off with your new-to-you laptop. :/

First I was pleasantly surprised/blown away at how fast Planet73 shipped my Asus laptop that was well within the estimated delivery time. It is a great balance of price and performance from Asus, which is known for reliability and robust products. It is a huge step up or jump in virtually all the specs and features departments compared to the 12.1" old faithful laptop I have!It's quiet with no heating issues. I'm not a gamer, so a big hard drive and Windows 7 works for me! Most people might not encounter this situation as I am left-handed. The on button placement is awkward for a leftie as well as the power cord. When plugging in the power cord in the rear left area of the laptop, my right hand inadvertently touches the DVD button on the right side for stability. Other from those quirks, its a keeper!

I bought this laptop to install Ubuntu 10.10 and it worked like a champ! Everything installed fine and works perfectly out of the box--including things like 3D acceleration, laptop keyboard functions, and other things that can sometimes be a pain in Ubuntu. The only problem I have with it is that the webcam was installed upside-down; Asus "fixed" this by installing a special driver in Windows that flipped it back, but there's no apparent way to do this with Ubuntu. With that one problem aside, if you're looking for a laptop for a pain-free installation of Ubuntu, this one definitely fits the bill!

As I sit here trying to figure out why my hard drive crashed (again) and how I am going to get my software and files off of it, I thought I would take the time to warn others to avoid this laptop at all costs. I have had mine for two years and it has been a problem since day one. Now I can only load windows in the safe mode and that is even a crap shoot. Of course my back up discs are at home and I am on the road. I am about to throw it in the pool. The machine is slow even after I maxed out the ram. It has all the inherent problems of its predecessor the IBM Think pad. Display isn't that good either. The self repair function is a joke. If I could rate this product with minus numbers, I would. DO NOT BUY AN ASUS!!!

Lenovo IdeaPad U260 08763BU 12.5-Inch Ultraportable Laptop (Mocha Brown)

This is my first PC in almost a decade, so the fact that I even purchased it over a Mac in the first place speaks volumes about this little computer. I've owned it for a little over a month now, so I think it would be fair to say I can assess its tru value at this point. I was impressed by the specs, looks, and size, and for the price (including free xbox with amazon student deal) it really can't be beat in the ultraportable market. I would recommend anyone considering a Sony, Apple, or Samsung ultraportable look into this model as well.I was looking for something this size and weight, with decent specs, but not a blazingly fast, top-of-the line performer. I'm used to the $2000 and up, upgraded Macbook Pros, so I know performance and reliability when I see it, and this thing meets my expectations and more.

Pros:

Perfect size and shape (same thickness and weight as 2010 Macbook Air)

Plenty fast and reliable (though not an i7, or 2011 MBA)

Great looks (I actually prefer the flat rounded-smooth shape and color instead of Macbook)

Very nice keys trackpad

Decent screen

Decent Webcam

Good software included (Good version of Windows 7 64-bit, Little bloatware)

Cons:

Keyboard not backlit (I still look at my keys sometimes, so typing in dark is hard)

No SD card slot (Not a dealbreaker obvuiously, but would have been nice)

Battery underwhelming (2.5 to 4 hours isn't bad, but competitors are getting 9 from a charge)

Unless you are a superuser, and you need gaming on the go, or video and music editing, this will be more than enough for you. If you want to be doing very processor intensive tasks, then ultraportable probably isn't your class anyway.

Pro: Love the design, and the screen is amazing. Very light.

Con: Only two USB, intergrated battery hope it will not die on me soon, no SD card slot, a bit slow in time even with a i5 processor

got the Orange U260 .... 1st impression is that it is very lightweight, handy and the screen is very good. Speed is not exceptional but is adequate for its class. the keyboard felt really good and the system is really queit. I looked at the specs and was really good.

Here are the cons:

When I bought the system I read it could go up to 8gb! but the system I have only can stay at 4gb! it suppose to have 2 slots of memory! but after calling Lenova I found out that not all models have that! So! its a big Minus to me when I try to upgrade the memory .

Access to HD and memory is really difficult. since it is kind of a self contain unit and not able to change things out.

3rd issue is the battery cannot be easily change !have to pretty much strip the unit to get to it! if you do decide to have a spare! since the battery life on this unit is not impressive! rated at 4hr! but I am getting more like 3 hr max!

Overall! was a bit dissapointed with some of these items I mentioned! other than that! I loaded up Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop CS5, and even run some of my game well.

I purchased this laptop 5 months ago. I loved the color and thinness of the laptop. At 33 days old, it would not start up at all and had to be sent in for repair. It was returned not properly functioning, so it had to be sent back. Now 4 months after that the hard drive has to be replaced again. I have purchased many brands of laptops and have never had any problems within the first 2 years. This laptop is awful and the customer service is worse. Please reconsider making this purchase. I had heard good things about Lenovo products, but I regret buying this laptop. I am already in the market for a new computer 5 months after my purchase because this product is too unreliable for a law student, and I am only certain of one thing my new laptop will not be a Lenovo.
