I would definately buy from the seller again. the product is better than advertised. the altec lansing speakers are good. this was bought for a high school student. the wireless features work well, as does everything else. overall this is a great product for the price.

I bought a G6-1d73us in July 2012, feeling confident I'd get a phenomenal PC for the price (since I like HP products and have been a devoted customer for years). The laptop has good specs and is definitely a step up from my last HP laptop (whose processor is out of date and too slow to accommodate my current needs). This G6 met my expectations EXCEPT for one thing: I've noticed a substantial decrease in the quality of the sound / audio since July (quality that seems to decrease daily). It's been 6 months and I can't even watch or listen to anything without my headphones on. Without the headphones, the sound is so dim one can barely hear anything (even when there's no other phonic distraction in the background). It's a huge inconvenience for me to have to send it back to the manufacturer for repair. My warranty hasn't expired yet, thankfully; I'd be even more frustrated if this had happened to me post-warranty. After a bit of research online, I discovered that many people had encountered this problem --probably a hardware malfunction (and not a driver problem). Had I known my sound would die in a matter of months, I wouldn't have purchased this particular model.

HP G60-440US 16-Inch Laptop

I am a techno idiot, so if you want a review that goes in detail about gigs, jigs and migs, then this isn't it. If you want to know if this computer can get you online while on the road, listen to music, watch movies and just plain rock your world, then I am your man. I pulled this thing out of the box about 2 weeks ago and fired it up. I bought a router so I could use it anywhere at home. I have had no issues with it and the fact is it is much faster then my HP desktop. All preinstalled software works perfectly and the picture quality while watching video is perfect. The first night I had it I watched my DVD of Cool Hand Luke on it and was just amazed at the quality. Bottom line? I love it!

I took a good look at this laptop when I was shopping around for a new computer for my mother-in-law, and while I ended up purchasing the HP DV6 there was a lot to like about the G60 line. The HP G60 (and G70) are aimed at the home user looking for a desktop size screen but otherwise want traditional notebook specs (good battery life, lighter weight, etc...). While not a true "desk-note" (it uses mobile cpus, most desk-notes use desktop class cpus) it will fill the "desk top" role for most users. The build quality is pretty good. Far above the basic "Compaq" line but not quite as nice as the DV line from HP.

What it is good at: Web browsing, light gaming (does well with anything other than 3D games), office apps (word, excel, power point, etc...) and basic media tasks (playing and creating MP3s, watching movies, editing short home movies).

What it is not good at: 3D gaming, editing large video files, or any heavy computational tasks.

Here is a quick break down of the specs:

Display: This 16" screen is a good bright display that works best indoors, but can be used outdoors except in direct sunlight. A good display is an HP trademark and this one lives up to that standard.

CPU: The Intel Pentium T4300 is a good dual core CPU for light home use. It is the newest version of the Pentium line and is based off the most advanced of the "Core2" processors. (Pentiums are just "Core" or "Core2" CPUS with less cache and slower clock speeds.) I'm a big fan of this CPU for people who mostly want to web browse it's got two cores so you can surf while the anti-virus does it's job so why pay more for a CPU you won't use? If you plan on doing any serious gaming this is not the CPU for you (though it's a lot better than older Pentiums based off the old "Core" cpus).

Memory: 3GB is plenty for light home use. Again plenty for web surfing and playing movies. Not enough for serious gaming.

Graphics: Comes with Intel's new 4500 integrated graphics. While this is a great improvement over previous Intel graphics parts it's still not going to run high-end 3D games at any decent resolution. Old games and non-3D games will be fine.

HDD: 320GB is far more than most light home users will use. I know few using more than 60GB. However anyone who plans on editing home movies will need more space than this (and more memory, and a faster cpu...).

Battery: 6 cell lithium ION. Pretty standard. Gives you about 2-3 hours of light use. If you order it custom from HP you can get an 8 cell. However if you are looking for good battery life you really don't want the G60 line. Look for something with a 14" display and at least an 8 cell battery.

Wireless: Most notebooks from high to low end are using the same few wireless chipsets. This one is covers a wide wireless spectrum including the newest "Wireless N".

Weight: 6.7lbs is a good weight for a screen this large. You will find them up to 8lbs. Again if you are looking for serious mobility you want a thin-and-light, but if you want something you can easily carry from room to room this should suit you.

I received this notebook a couple days ago, and I'm currently in the process of cleaning all the "bloatware" off of it (though pretty much any computer maker is going to install this on systems they sell, this is really my main problem with HP products). It should run Vista fine after that (though I may end up "downgrading" to XP -I plan on doing IT work with this notebook and need specific software tools that I know run on XP -the 10-key is definitely a plus for entering IP addresses quickly for IT work). This notebook gets a 3.5 performance rating in Vista (the weakest component is the integrated video, but that is to be expected). One thing you don't really see in the pictures on Amazon is that the top of the shell is very shiny black, and will easily show fingerprints, and will quite likely be susceptible to scratches, so make sure you get a good case if you want to maintain its appearance. At the current pricing, this thing is a steal (especially when you factor in the free upgrade to Windows 7, coming out this fall).

Update 10/17/09: I just installed Windows 7 Ultimate (I wanted the Bitlocker drive encryption feature, so I will not be using the free upgrade of Windows 7 Home Premium HP will be sending me) last night without a hitch -I did not need to download any drivers from HP and the notebook successfully connected to the Internet after only having to enter the wireless network key. The notebook is much snappier with Windows 7 than with Vista. Still, an excellent value, even though the OS I just loaded onto it cost almost half as much as the notebook originally did.

Wow! Really light computer. Overall, great computer and fantastic deal on Amazon. Came with battery already half charged. Has cleaning cloth, notepad, and contact numbers if any problems right when you open the box. Initially thought screen was a little small, but I wanted a full size keyboard because I use 10-key sometimes, so it was perfect.

It took 4 minutes to boot, took another 4 to go through HP software. HP tries to get you to allow them to track your use of the computer, which, fortunately, you can skip. Did not recognize my network right away and had to go through setup with more lousy, HP(network) software that did not work. I searched My Computer and Network to figure out where the network was and it took 2 seconds doing it my own way took me 20 minutes to figure this all out. Comes with Ebay on Desktop, Norton Trial, and Office trial, and more dumb HP software (which I promptly closed out).

Keyboard is a little slick to touch, but recognizes fine touch, it has a separate section to slide your finger down to make the page scroll up or down. Screen is bright, but sound is just ok (Altec speaker) and a little schrill (get better sound from my Altec surround sound desktop speakers. Keyboard/windows response is fast and crisp. Computer was really quiet and the fan did not start right away like my old computer. Actually, the computer did not get very hot at all after using until battery died.

Recognized CD right away, but was slow opening images. Took 7 minutes to copy 556 MB to harddrive from disc. After using a few days, I found the battery lasts about 3 hours. The 10-key is really convenient if you crunch numbers. The one bad thing is the wi-fi doesn't recognize my network automatically, I have to manually set it up every time this may be due to my other wi-fi on my desktop or other interference or the router I have (which is a few years old). I would recommend anyone to get the new chipsets that have a wireless N router built into the wi-fi chipset. I also got a USB hub to add more devices (comes with 3 USB ports); also does not take a CF card, only SD, MMC, XD and SMpro.

I haven't bought a new computer in several years, so I really shopped around and this is a really good computer so far and at a great price.

I've had my HP G60-440US laptop for four months now. During those four months, the laptop's been out of order (non-functioning) three different times for an aggregate period of about five weeks. During the first month, the hard drive crashed, and I couldn't turn the computer on. Then the little chippie-thing that allows the computer to connect to my wireless modem broke down. Most recently, the dvd player died while, at the same time, the new wireless card went kaputt. Consequently, I've had to send my laptop away to the service department twice, and have had to reinstall some chip or other part so that the computer could pick up a wireless signal. The computer has been a complete lemon. My friends warned me about purchasing an HP product, and I didn't listen.

One of the worst parts about my HP experience has been the attitude of the customer service people. The technical guys in India were nice enough, but they kept me on the line for more than an hour before they agreed that I wasn't lying about my hard drive having crashed. My experience with the managers in the U.S. was much worse. My conversation with customer service notwithstanding all the scripted "I'm sorry to hear that, sirs" left me feeling absolutely powerless and with the feeling that, now that HP had my $500, they cared not a bit about my needs or satisfaction.

So, be warned this is not a good product. I wish I had listened to my friends and spent a little more cash for a better product instead of this toy laptop.

I cant believe how inexpensive this laptop was and how fast it works. It also has a webcam I was unaware of. Its a awesome laptop for the money.

I've read some of the other people's reviews here & some bear merit & others are complete horse... actually, I don't know if I can use that word here, but you get the idea. That said, I'm going to try to be as fair as possible with this review.

First of all, I'm not a computer guy, in fact, I hate technology with a passion. I'm the kind of guy who would rather sit in a garage all day rebuilding an old engine than sitting on a computer playing vidya games. That being said, I use computers quite a bit. Do I know a hell of a lot about them? For a 29 year old, hell no, I don't. What I will say is that when you have multiple windows open, this thing lags bad. Really bad. I've yet to have major problems with streaming movies & for the most part, it does what it says on the tin. Just don't expect to have a hundred tabs open on your browser or run multiple programs at once, because you'll be sorely disappointed.

I'm not going to lie, I've had to replace the battery once already(about 2 months ago) & I'm looking at doing so again soon. Not just to have another spare battery, but because this thing eats batteries like a U.S.N. Gato Class submarine(That's WW2, in case you don't know. Not the best tech around at the time). Fortunately, the batteries, as of now, are easy to come by here for a relatively cheap price. Something around $20-25USD will get you a new one, & that's not too bad.

It over heats. Oh, I don't mean that it just gets warm, no, that wouldn't be bad. No, this thing has gotten so hot that my keyboard keys are actually a higher elevation by the power button than the rest of the keyboard. Yes, I allow for ventilation & no, I don't use this thing while laying in bed with it sitting on my comforter. I bought a little tray table for that exact reason.

Will it play movies? Yes. Will it play vidya games from 4 years ago? Yes. Will it browse the net? Yes. Are you buying an Alienware? Are you smoking crack? I bought this thing for $305 at Wal-Mart a year ago, it's now $200 on here. That means that you're looking at a cheap laptop, so exactly, what do you think you're looking at? Idk why, but I didn't get a webcam & I feel kinda cheated by that. Whatever, I'm not really the Chatroulette kinda guy anyway.

For some reason, & I really don't download, but I find that restoring this thing to the factory settings every other month or so makes it faster that before. Or maybe it's because I go on 4Chan all the time & click the links like a summerfag. Overall though, this thing will get the job done, barely, but it will get the job done nonetheless. For what it is, being a cheap laptop, I'd reccomend it even though it pisses me off sometimes.

TL;DR if you're looking for a cheap laptop to bring everywhere & not worry about, stop looking & buy this. If you want amazing quality, what the hell are you doing looking at a $200 laptop?

Kudos to HP for this little powerhouse. My daughter left it out in the rain overnight, the cover wide open. When I found it and picked it up it was dripping wet, and water poured off of it onto the ground. The keyboard was swimming. Fearing the worst, I turned it on and, voila! Fired up instantly like a champ with no screen problems. The touchpad was inoperative so I figured it was toast, but after turning it upside down for a day and letting it dry out completely, the touchpad restored itself as well, and it's all working perfectly ever since. wow!

Overall this is a great little computer (purchased for my junior high age child). But Amazon indicates this model has a built-in webcam. That is dead wrong. I don't think I will return it for this simple fact, but the product features need to be updated.

Please do not waste your money on this completely worthless piece of crap. It barely has enough memory to run a browser and paint, and quite often I cannot even watch a streaming movie when nothing else is open and my internet is at full speed. Sometimes if I right click to save a picture, it takes literally 10 seconds for the dialog box to open. And it was like this from the time I got it.

By the way, let's not forget the mouse pad. You have to use actual strength to push down on the pad in order to click something. It's the worst design I have ever seen. Forget about highlighting anything because you won't have the finger strength.

Poor design, poor quality, unbelievably slow and worthless. You'd be much better off buying a basic netbook at Target or Walmart because they will run much faster than this.

P.S. Many people received this (like me) as part of a class action lawsuit against NVIDIA as a settlement. Choosing cash was not an option. So I received this to replace an HP laptop ($1400 in 2007). What a joke. Nice to know what you think of your customers.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (344425U) 14" Ultrabook - Core i7-3667U 2GHz 4G DDR3 256G SSD (Windows 7

I apologize to Amazon that I didn't buy this on Amazon. I kept watching for an model with 8G of memory but Amazon only has the 4G one listed. So, I ended up ordering it directly from Lenovo to get a true Ultimate with 8G memory, 256G SSD, and the port replicator. I just can't see buying a computer in 2012 that has less than 8G of memory. I wanted more but I also wanted the exceptionally slim form factor.

Immediately after it was unpacked I was impressed with the quality of the build. It is incredibly thin. The keyboard has to be the best Chicklet keyboard I have used. The layout of the keys is very well done, and they are crisp.

I have been using it now for 3 weeks. This is by far the best machine I have ever owned or used. It blows the socks off a friends laptop (hint... it is silver).

The only negatives that I have found (which exist on every other machine I looked at)

* The screen is a little too bright for me so I lowered the brightness and it is still crisp. The high resolution results in everything being smaller than my previous ThinkPad but that is easily adjusted.

* I wish both of the USB ports were 3.0

* It needs a hot key to disable the trackpad. I occasionally let my thumb touch it while typing and the cursor will be moved.

* The USB 3.0 port replicator is interesting, but I do miss just being able to drop a machine into a dock and everything including power is hooked up immediately. But its a luxury that Ultrabooks don't have.

* It would be nice if Lenovo offered some upgrade to Windows 8 when it is released, but I really have no plans for going to Windows 8 in the near term so this isn't a big issue.

I waited a long time for this product. Lenovo (once again) delayed its shipping date for a long time, and finally shipped without the Ethernet dongle and the 3G chip. Prior to receiving my laptop (i7, 4gb ram, 256gb ssd configuration) I heard many problems about the laptop on top of the delayed shipping, including a rattly and loose trackpad, terrible battery life, and excessively bulky charger.

I haven't found any of these to be true, and I am pleasantly surprised! The charger is not that bulky, it appear normal, and when I compared it with an ultra-slim charger (not made by Lenovo, bought from an outside source) they weren't all that different in terms of weight and size.

The battery life has been around 3-6 hours depending on my usage, and I always have a lot of tabs open, I'm always using the internet, and I usually have Pandora open in the background. I run programming tasks, use Solidworks, and do a lot of stuff with it, and even under heavy use it lasts for a good 3-4 hours. Lenovo also has some nifty ways to extend battery life.

I don't use the trackpad much, since I love the trackpoint, but it seems totally fine, no looseness yet...

However, there was a lot of preloaded bloatware, and I uninstalled most of it, including the Lenovo Power Manager because it wasn't very useful and it stopped working after a week.

Despite its faults, I can't help but give it 5 stars for its amazing lightness, the screen quality (not sure why people didn't like it, maybe my eyes are just too bad to notice the pixels!), and its battery life and slimness. Not the most powerful machine, but it serves my purposes PERFECTLY since I travel a lot and it doesn't feel like anything in my bag. Then again, I'm converting from an IBM Thinkpad T43, which weighed about 5.3lb for the same screen size.

I have been using laptops for 15 years and this is by far the best laptop ever. Thanks to the SSD and i7 everything runs and opens in nothing, this is the first time MS Office (excel, powerpoint) truly opens and runs fast. Keyboard is great and something I noticed from my prior lenovos is that this computer seems off all the time, I left it downloading updates all night and could not hear not the least hum from it. I was thinking on buying a Mac, but this laptop excels in everything. Great seller by the way, good communication and very open since I needed an invoice change. Thanks!

I love this laptop. It is very light, thin and fast. My only issue was with the track pad. More exactly the trackpad software. I have never had a problem with a trackpad before but this one gave me fits. I had to disable the "advanced" features that Lenovo incorporated in to it's software and now it is tolerable. I am still very happy that I bought the laptop, but I thought others should know about this issue.

Samsung SF410-A01 14" White Notebook

I've had this laptop for over a year now and I still get compliments about how cool/pretty it looks. I like that its different cause when everyone pulls out their laptops for class or at the library, mine's different. in a good way. 14" is a great screen size for everyday use. The track pad is different but these are all things you get used to over time. Now when I use other track pads.. it bothers me that two fingers doesn't mean scroll. And I like that the pad doesn't have the right and left click buttons separate and sticking out from the body.

As of now.. the only downside I've had is that the hard drive and the battery are stuck together so you can't take out the battery..

But overall, LOVE this laptop. I would buy it again if I had to. :)

I've had this notebook for about 6 months and I do not like it. I bought it because it looked like an Apple, i.e., it was pretty. But, the keyboard does really weird things when I'm trying to type. It will suddenly put letters in previous words or will erase words for no reason. It is way too much trouble to use... almost as much trouble as trying to type on a phone.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5043 TruBrite 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Was looking for a laptop with ATI Radeon graphics and this laptop was a steal for the price of 449! Got it within 2 days through Amazon and was amazed at the size of the screen. The screen is very bright since it has the Tru Bright technology and it is also a wide screen which makes it nice for videos and movies. Sound is really good for a laptop and even plays 780 HD youtube videos without trouble!

Only had this since about 4 hours ago so am getting used to everything now. Windows 7 is very different and will take time to adjust to if you have been on XP for years. One thing though this model 655D S5043 DOES NOT have a webcam, facial recognition software or the microphone in the LCD bezel like it says on this website. I checked through Toshiba website before I bought it and noticed that it did not come with it which was okay for me, but for people who see that in the description IT DOES NOT come with the cam or facial recognition software!

Here is the link to the study I talk about:Was looking for a laptop to replace my 7 year old Acer *which Acer is one of the WORST brands to buy according to a recent study*** And yes, the Acer died. It has been going out for the past 3 years with multiple hardware failures and system restores. So this worked out well since Toshiba had one of the highest ratings and least hardware malfunctions. Overall the laptop is fairly sturdy and feels solid, weighing in a little more than my other IBM Thinkpad laptop which is okay with me also. The feel and design of the outer shell is really cool and I love the keypad on the right side. The keys are kind of shifted to the left and so is the touchpad which might be hard to get used to at first. The keys are not as raised up as other computers and sit a little flatter so it might take a while to adjust. Looking at the screen is like looking at the sun it is just amazing how bright it really is! So far very happy and for this price you can NOT go wrong. The wireless connection wizard located the wireless the first time I turned it on and was setup within 1 minute. Downloading FireFox and Chrome are fast and simple. Another good thing is that there is NOTHING on the desktop except for Recycle Bin when you get the computer! Really great! This computer plays the video games I play very well without using too much CPU or slowing other programs down.

I am returning this laptop tomorrow for many reasons. I recieved this computer on September 13, 2010

First the Pro's:

(This could be difficult)

-The HD is very nice and I did play a movie on it and it had great picture quality.

-Having a standard version of a regular desktop keyboard was nice and a treat.

-It comes with only two USB ports, which may be enough for some.

-It comes with a port for a wired mouse, printer and the like.

Cons:

-It did not come with the advertised webcam or microphone. (I knew this in advance due to another posting the same about it, so I have no complaints about that...but if it is important to you, buyer beware)

-The sound quality leaves a LOT to be desired. I remedied that with my headset which will amplify sound, still a pain to have to do, when I shouldn't have to. I do not use my laptop plugged into speakers, so if I wanted to watch a movie, I had to grab the wireless headset to do so.

-If there is a way to shut off the touch pad, I never found it. But then again I was having other issues from the first few days. I use a wireless mouse and do not like the touch pad. It's location being where your palms are inevitably going to hit send you to places you really do not wish to go to while typing. That was extremely annoying to me as I'm a rapid typist and to have to continualy go find a way back to what I was doing, didn't exactly please me. The touch pad is extremely sensitive, one brush and you never can tell where you will land next.

-The computer itself is extremely sluggish. I thought I'd do okay with 2Gig's...apparently not with the work and other things I enjoy doing. If you game on sites such as Pogo or the like, you'll need more than 2 Gigs, I have no idea if this product has a way of upgrading it as other issues cropped up.

-One extremely annoying side affect was that since I use Yahoo to communicate with others and the touch pad is very sensitive I'd be calling people without meaning to on there. They would answer and say hello and I could not respond UNLESS I ran to grab my microphone headset. That irked me to no end.

-Lastly (and the reason I say I probably got a lemon) is that the computer started blacking out on me for no reason what-so-ever. First time I thought it somehow became unplugged and the battery died, but it hadn't. Rinse repeat about a dozen times in a two day period. That was enough for me to throw in the towel after less than 10 days of grief.

I gave this a two star for it's value in price...just remember you get what you pay for. If you are not one that likes to communicate via vocal or visual chat, do not use headsets, could care less about sound quality, love to use a touch pad and don't get a lemon like I did...then this computer would likely fill the bill, for the price.

Updated to add:

Major Pro's on working with Amazon. Earlier today I conversed with a representative in less than one minute via live chat, expressed my concerns (in specific) recieved an email with a return UPS label less than a minute later, and they have since updated this product to remove the fact it does not have a webcam or microphone. Now that is service at it's finest! They also got a new order from us today for a different computer!

Yes it's only a single core with 2gig, but very fast and windows 7 64 bit works very well on it. The only thing I would change would be the SPEAKERS they are not very loud and are the weakest part of the laptop. But the rest of it is built with quality and I am very happy with it. I use it for music, watch Hulu, Netflixs on my big screen LCD without problems.

I looked and reviewed Acers, Asus, Compaqs, Lenovo, and HP laptops before getting this one and I can tell you that Acer has quality issues, the Asus was nice and has good ratings but is much more expensive, and the Compaq just felt cheap and poorly designed. HP has nice laptops for double the cost but nothing can touch this laptop at this price. The screen is gorgeous!!! And I love the matte finish. Even the touch screen is nice (at work I use two desktops exclusively) but at home I have ditched my Dell dual core 2 in favor of this laptop.

The Toshiba Satelite 640 has been extremely unreliabile. Purchased new an 3 months later failed hard drive, mouse and screen. Sent in for repair and internal mouse was backordered with no delivery date after 30 days. Toshiba supplied refurburished computer and had screen failure in 1 month. Received repair and on start up fan drive failed. I would not recommend Toshiba to any user due to no resolution of issues.

This is an excellent laptop for the price.

It comes with very little bloatware. The OS--Win 7-64--works great. Performance wise, it runs very smoothly for everyday activities, from web surfing to word processing. It has a bright glossy screen. Personally, I like the matte finish on the case and keyboard, which gives it a better tactile feel compared to the glossy ones out there.

One con might be that it doesn't have 4 GB of RAM, but for the price I really cannot complaint.

AWESOME! Of all the laptops I've had, this is by far the best. It's well constructed and sturdy. Our almost 80 pound dog walked across the screen and there was NO damage. This Dell runs Quiet....no whirring wizzing or loud fan sound. The keyboard is very quiet when I am using it: no click-clack, plus the number pad is a great addtion. The on/off key is well placed and the mouse works well.

Now, Windows 8: It is great once it is set-up to your liking. It has an Apple-esque feel to it, but not quite there yet. If you do not like the new Windows, you can always convert back to the regular old-school Icons by hitting the desk top key.

This Dell has been a very good purchase for me. Dude, I got a Dell!!!

I love the computer. Not sure how I feel about windows 8 yet. That will hopefully get better in time. Thank you very much.

HP 17-1181NR 17-Inch Envy Notebook PC

Now that I've had this computer for a few months, I'd like to modify my review. This computer has randomly shut down about 10 times now, a dozen blue screens of death related to USB 3. I'm sure these are either hardware or driver related and rescind my recommendation for this machine.

This is a very fast laptop. I'm a computer programmer that needs a very fast machine for pretty much everything I do, and this laptop is awesome.

This machine as it is listed has great upgraded options, like the best resolution screen, blu-ray, extra battery, and extra RAM, however, the hard drive it comes with is very slow. This laptop does have a 2nd hard drive bay and I bought the 225$ 128GB Kingston SSD, made it my primary drive, then made the original drive my secondary drive. To do this was no small task, but here's the steps to take:

Warning: I have no idea if this does or does not void your warranty, I can't find a clear answer to that.

1. Order this laptop

2. Order an SSD ($225-$250 for 128GB, or $360-$400 for 160GB)

3. Order a hard drive caddy and cable kit. HP sells it for 91$ after taxes and shipping, but you can get it for 41$ from newmodeus.com.

And by the way HP, I think that it's awful that the laptop didn't come with this in the first place. $41 for just a 3" cable is robbery and the $91 that you charge is two robberies and a beating.

4. If you get a SATA hard drive enclosure, things will be easier because you can connect the drives to the eSata port. Otherwise you will need to install the ssd to the 2nd hard drive bay, do the clone, then switch them so the SSD is in the first bay. Note: HP does NOT give you the windows 7 installation DVD, so the first thing you should do is make recovery DVDs through their utility. But also know that you can't use these DVDs to set up a new drive because they won't create the special boot partition HP uses. (I learned this the hard way)

5. Resize the original drive's partitions so they are altogether small enough to fit on the new drive. (And be sure to move them so the unpartitioned space is at the end) Easeus partition manager is by far the easiest way to do this, and you will need its boot cd it makes later, so I'd suggest buying the pro version and save yourself a headache or two.

6. Use either clonezilla (free) or Easeus partition manager pro ($40) to create a boot disk and clone the old drive to the new one. I used clonezilla, but Easeus is a lot easier.

7. After confirming the new drive works and is in bay 1, you'll notice the old drive is "Offline", meaning Windows can't use it. You will need to delete all of its partitions, create a primary partition and format it with NTFS in order to make it work. Use the Easeus professional boot disk to do this. Then when you boot Windows, go to disk management, right click the drive and select "Online" to make it Online, whatever that means.

Also note that the back panel to change the hard drives on this laptop was (at least for me) incredibly difficult to remove. I felt like I was surely going to break it with the force it took to pry it off. I've had several laptops in the past, and this one is the first one that I've had any difficulty replacing the hard drive. It's also the first one I've had with two hard drive bays.

So it's definitely a lot of work to get a faster hard drive in there and may be more trouble than it's worth, but in my opinion, buying a high-end laptop at this time without a solid state drive is foolish. So either find a different laptop that has an SSD, order this laptop customized from hp.com (considerably more expensive) to include an SSD, or stepping down to a more economy line laptop would all be better options than not having one.

Gaming

Did I mention that this laptop is good for gaming? The 1GB ATI Mobility 5850 is one of the fastest mobile graphics cards at the time of this review. If you want a faster gaming machine, you either have to spend over $3000 for a better gaming laptop, or get a desktop. This graphics card puts this machine on par for gaming with modern mid-range desktops, which is saying a lot for a laptop. It also allows you to have up to 3 external monitors. (Display port, VGA, and HDMI). However, I do have a problem with League of Legends crashing when using a 1920x1280 monitor through the display port. That is likely just the game, but who knows. It works fine with the VGA port.

Beats Audio

The Beats audio does not live up to the hype. I find the built in speakers to be rather crummy in my opinion. Previous reviews say "Good, for a laptop". I would add, "very slightly above average laptop speakers". The sound card is good, it sounds great with external bose speakers or headphones, but the laptop speakers suck. In fact, it took a lot of configuring to get them to not sound completely broken.

Screen

The display is better than any other laptop I've seen. It's at least equal to high-end macbook pros. It looks perfect from any angle, has great resolution, and is attached by sturdy metal hinges.

Keyboard and mouse

The keyboard is awesome, but I hate the touchpad. I love how it's the back-lit, island style keyboard. The numpad is great to have, the keys are all in the right spot and size. I'm always amazed at how few laptops or even external keyboards get it right.

The touchpad, on the other hand, is awful. I don't think I'll ever get used to it. I can't even drag things with it. I don't know if I'm just "doing it wrong", but it is literally impossible to use. I don't like touchpads in general, I prefer Lenovo button mice, but this one is particularly terrible. I can overlook this huge flaw in a laptop by always using an external mouse.

Connections

Awesome, Mini display port, hdmi, vga, eSata, usb 3, blu-tooth, wireless n, gigabit ethernet. All awesome. One thing though, instead of a microphone jack, it's a "headset" jack? I can't seem to use it as a microphone port either. This confuses me..

Power Supply

It's huge. But what do you expect? Big computer, big power supply.

HD Camera and microphone

Works fine, good for my uses, but not as good as I hoped it would be. The built in microphone sounds great.

Software

HP didn't go overboard with pre-installed software like it did with the last HP I bought, and Windows 7 is great. The partitioning of the drives is weird and the HP recovery software isn't very good. It doesn't come with windows disks, so again, be sure to immediately create the recovery disks.

Other

This laptop has no docking station options. This alone was almost reason enough to go with Dell or Lenovo, but neither of those were as good for gaming at the same price, nor did they match up in many other areas.

Bottom line, this is a power hungry, fast, big laptop. A great desktop replacement, but doesn't have the mobility or battery life as some people might like.

I hope this helps people, and doesn't utterly confuse everyone.

I did a lot of research before I bought the Envy 17. This laptop is everything I hoped it would be. Very fast on all my apps. I usually run multiple apps and I've never noticed any lag at all. The keyboard is the best I've ever used and the backlighting is awesome. I was a little worried about the touch paid because I read some reviews that were critical of it. I actually like it quite a bit. It's bigger than I'm used to and very responsive. No problems with the buttons at all. The screen is really bright and clear. Movies are beautiful on this box. I use this as more of a desktop replacement so it's ussually plugged in. I can't really speak to the battery perofrmance. I will note that mine came with both a small (6 cell) battery and a bigger (9 cell) battery. Overall, this is the best computer I've ever owned and I love it.

-Quad core i7 chews through pretty much anything you can throw at it, from Photoshop to simple tasks.

This is a great laptop for the price. It's fast, the picture is clear and I love the number key pad on the right side. My only complaint was the sound. There isn't much volume and the sound was weak and tinny. That was easily fixed with a $29.00 Gigaware speaker I bought at Radio Shack that sits on top of your open laptop. The sound is incredible for $30 and it plugs in with a USB cord. I would recommend this computer and this speaker.

Beware! The Intel wireless display feature is not available although it is advertised as such for this model. I purchased the Netgear push2tv adapter and it was a waste. I called Sony Vaio support and they took a long time to tell me that this feature is not available on this model and the software cannot be installed as the hardware is not compatible. So do no waste your time if you are buying this computer for this feature. There are other ways to stream wirelessly to your TV, but Intel wireless display is not one of them for this computer.

I bought this product about 2 months ago, strictly for school. I needed a laptop that had the storage room to hold all of my pictures, music, videos, and school files. All in all I've wasted about 150GB in just that, and to still have about 580GB to use, is GREAT. I also needed a laptop that could run editing programs, because of the i5 processor I could run multiple internet windows, iTunes, Photoshop CS5 Extended without it even slowing down a bit.

I don't mind that the keyboard is NOT back lit, like the previous review I also misunderstood and read that it WAS back lit. But at the end of the day it really makes no difference, yeah it would be a lot nicer but if you know how to type (which I'm assuming a majority of buyers know how to) it won't make a difference. It has a full keyboard so when I'm inputting numbers I don't have to go to the top row and input them horizontally. I personally, prefer inputting numbers vertically, I don't know with cellphones being that way, calculators and a heap of other devices to me this keyboards number pad feels great.

Don't get me wrong, not all of this laptop was shimmering gold to me. Let me begin by saying that none of these things I'm about to point out make me change how I feel about this laptop, the mouse pad is a little TOO sensitive. The first few days you find yourself being frustrated because you might close your windows because you grazed the mouse pad, or realize that you're no longer typing where you intended to. The good thing about this oh so sensitive touch pad is the fact that because it's so smooth and sensitive it responds EXTREMELY well.

The sound on this laptop can be a 9 to me, it handles all of my music well ranging from death metal to Chopin, or whatever I feel like listening to. The reason why I say it CAN BE a 9 is due to the fact that the speakers are, wait for it.....on the bottom. What? Yes, the speakers are on the bottom. As a student at first it really really pissed me off because what do students love to do? Do their homework comfortably on their bed. And if you don't have those little laptop stands like I don't, your sound becomes muffled and sounds like it's underwater. If the speakers weren't on the bottom it'd be a 9 but because of this I will give the sound a 6.5-9.

I want to touch one LAST thing before I conclude my review, the day I went to go purchase this laptop at Best Buy there was a disgruntled buyer returning this EXACT Laptop. He was complaining that the product description was false and that it did NOT have a memory card reader. It does, don't fret, it's a little hard to find but it's RIGHT BENEATH where the little stickers of INTEL and HDMI are. Just lift a little bit and you can see it there.

In conclusion, don't let the little flaws of this laptop stop you from buying it, I am actually considering purchasing another one for my Mom. You get your moneys worth and it will handle everything you do well. Oh and I know that there will be people looking for reviews on how well it handles games, the best it could handle (that I tested) was BF3 on normal settings.

Right out of the box this notebook has a nice sleek, lightweight feel to it and the color is just simply beautiful. Programs and apps run very smoothly with very little to no catches or lag. The arrangement of the CD drive and USB ports seem to be a bit different then other Notebooks, but this doesn't occur to me as being a bad thing. As far as support and warranty is concerned I haven't gotten a chance to use those yet. I will update this post as needed.

Toshiba Satellite P25-S607 17" Media Center Laptop (2.80-GHz Pentium 4 (Hyper-Threading), 512 MB RA

I purchased a P25-(s)607 about a month ago and have been nothing but pleased with its performance.

Pros-

a. HUGE screen that really allows you to see a lot at one time

b. really fast computer. Benchmarks were outstanding for this product when I ran them right out of the box. They did nothng but improve after I did all the recommended steps (esp. driver upgrades)

c. Lots of goodies that no other laptop has... 4 USB 2.0 ports are great, and the DVD R/RW is really fast (4x) by today's standards. The 5400 rpm hd is fast, though with 60GB isn't the biggest out on the market these days (though with a dvd rw you really can't mind too much)

Cons-

a. This puppy is BIG... and heavy. Even though the screen is a whopping 17 inches, there is an area around the screen of unused plastic (about a 1-1.5 inch edge) This only adds to the huge footprint of this laptop.

b. The keyboard is relatively big, but is still not quite full size. In fact, the keyboard on my 15 inch compaq laptop is actually wider by almost 3/4 of an inch. It is still a capable keyboard though. It is also placed in about the center of the huge case, which can make using it a bit uncomfortable.

c. Lights, Lights, Lights... boy, this thing has a lot of pretty blue and green lights... and I can't find any way to turn them off. This can be a bit distracting while watching a movie in the dark.

d. Battery/TV tuner issues. there is only one battery port, and if you want to use a secondary drive (or the included tv tuner for that matter) you have to remove the battery. I know it seems semi-logical as you will be plugged into a cable anyway for the tv, but at the same time, you would think toshiba would find a way to incorperate a battery.

e. pricelets face it... this isn't the cheapest laptop on the planet... though it is one of the fastest and best equipped

All in all, I would probably rate this as a 4.5 star computer. I haven't fallen in love with it yet, but the courtship is well on its way.

I waited a long time for a windows laptop to get a 17" screen, and this model made it worth the wait. This machine is huge! It weighs almost 10 lbs, and dwarfs my old 15" machine. If you plan on taking trips with this, think again.

The screen is very crisp, and gives you the room to place two windows side by side. So far, everything seems very fast, probably due to the faster hard drive and the extra video memory. But, I would have liked to have seen a 7200 rpm drive instead of the 5400 rpm one.

One thing I will say is that the machine looks much better than the pictures indicate.

This machine has just about everything you need in a desktop replacement. Surpisingly, it runs very cool with a 2.8 GHz processor. There are 3 fans on the bottom and a huge heat sink in the back.

I would have liked to see a separate keypad since Toshiba had the room to put one in, but the overall feel of the full-size keyboard is good. The small tab key, though, is tough to get used to.

Another major annoyance is the touchpad. It will select items with a slight touch, and I have not found out how to turn it off. I have called tech support 3 times on this to no avail. Toshiba's tech support has not impressed me on this issue, and I have had trouble understanding the tech support staff.

***Update***

Tech support has told me that this machine does not support the features most touch pads have, like being able to turn off the tap to click feature. However, I believe it just needs a different driver.

I have also had trouble with the supplied TV Tuner. The machine will not boot with it installed, nor will it allow me to connect to the TV. Tech support's solutions so far are to re-install all of the drivers, which did not work. This has not been resolved yet.

Having said this, I am very impressed with the product, and would highly recommend it. But I think some of the lower models may be a better value. It depends on your needs, but you will not go wrong with these computers as long as you don't mind the size and the short battery life. The issues I am having look like they can be resilved.

Hello. I love this machine, You should know that the TV receiver can only be used without the battery, (the module goes in that bay) so you MUST be plugged to an outlet. Also needs an external antennae conection (includes conector) The Remote Control for the media center is quite nice BUT you need to attach an IR receiver (also included) to one of your USB ports so this is not that practical after all... Great buy, but I just wanted you to know what I did not when I ordered... :)

I have not generally been kind to Toshibas, but I must say I took a liking to this one the first time I booted it up. It is impressive to look at, quite high-tech with great lines and lots of cool colored lights. But it's what's inside that counts.

It has a very, very fast 2.8 GHz CPU with an ample 512 megabytes of 800 MHz FSB RAM (expandable to 2 gigs), a 64 megabyte dedicated vidcard and a 17" display that is unbeatable. The 60 gigabyte hard drive, though, is a bit smaller than I would have expected.

That it has a digital TV tuner, can play and record DVDs as well as CDs (so it can be used as a true media center instead of just as a PC) and that it features a full function remote control are all just that much more "lagniappe" (oh, that's a cajun word for 'that little bit extra' you didn't expect but were pleased to get).

Anyway, why only 4 stars? Well, mainly because this computer is not really a laptop, unless you have a very, very big lap. This is a desktop masquerading as a laptop, and believe me, at a whopping 10 pounds it isn't going to be making very many trips. That may all be fine and dandy, but there is a significant penalty for it being called a laptop, namely a higher price than an equivalent desktop media center (look at the Gateways, for instance) would command.

For most folks, this is overkill. Where would it be perfect? I would say it would be true Nirvana in some lucky person's dorm room, though it would also look most handsome under anyone's Christmas tree!

I will never buy another Toshiba Computer again. I've owned 3 laptops made by Toshiba (P25-S607, M30 and P25-S676) and am impressed with the machines. However, Toshiba's support is by far the worst that I've ever encountered; in fact, I would go so far as to say that they have NO SUPPORT!

One day I was working on my P25-S676 and I shut the lid of the computer, which would obviously put the system on standby. When I opened the lid again and tried to turn the computer on, it wouldn't give me anything but a blank, black screen. I found out that the motherboard was fried (???) and that it needed to be sent into the Toshiba Support Depot. I sent my laptop to Toshiba on 1/15/2005 and here it is 2/25/2005 and it is still not fixed. It's not the fact that I've been without my laptop for over a month that bothers me; it's that I was promised EIGHT different E.T.A.s! If I was told that it would take two months to fix my laptop, I would've been disappointed, but respected the honesty. However, it really ticks me off when a company lies to me eight times and counting!!! I have no faith that I will receive my laptop back in the next month, or maybe even this year. I've contacted the Better Business Bureau and I'm hoping that they can light a fire under Toshiba, since Toshiba's customers can't.

When shopping for a laptop, shop for support first and performance second.
