Dell i15RN-2727BK Inspiron 15 15.6" Notebook PC - Obsidian Black

Dell i15RN-2727BK Inspiron 15 15.6' Notebook PC - Obsidian BlackGreat computer! Really fast and dependable. Keyboard works great, sound quality is fantastic and the battery doesn't die as fast as other computers. Overall great computer, looking to keep this one for quite awhile.

HP Compaq Presario cq58-bf9wm 15.6-Inch Laptop - WINDOWS 8 - 320 GB Hard Drive - SuperMulti DVD Burner - 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN - 15.6' HD BrightView LED-backlit display - Built-in HP TrueVision HD webcam - AMD Dual-Core C-60 processorI waited in line at Black Friday for 2 hours for the laptop and the wait was worth it! This is my 1st laptop and it is amazing for the price! Setup was a breeze and within 30 minutes of boot up, I was already using it. Boot up time is lightning fast only taking 12 seconds! Windows 8 takes some time to get used to, but there is a guide with the laptop that explains the process to you. Battery time is decent lasting 5 to 6 hours of heavy use or up to 3 days in standby time. Wi-Fi works great with this laptop and the internet is lightning fast! You can also switch from a Windows 8 to a Windows 7 mode by clicking this application called Desktop. I haven't had a single problem with this laptop in the 2 weeks I have had so you can tell that is a quality machine. Great laptop for only $179, and is highly recommended that you get the 2 year warranty from Walmart for only $19. The laptop itself comes with a 1 year warranty and with the warranty from Walmart, it will bump it to a 3 year combined warranty.

Also, if you wish to upgrade the RAM, please be aware that there is only one DIMM slot for the RAM, and the RAM can only be upgraded to 8 GBS of ram. Happy laptop hunting and have a nice day!

P.S. This particular laptop has a turbo-boosting technology that will bump the processor to clock at 1.20 GHz and above, when performing certain tasks such as gaming. This is extremely useful when performing many tasks at once.

Update: I have been using this laptop for about 2 months, and still working like a champ! There have been zero problems with this laptop, except the annoying notifications for Windows updates, which just ask you to re-boot your laptop to start the update. Other than that, this laptop has been working great. I highly suggest that the upgrade the ram to 8 GBS, as this will pay off in the long run. Have a nice day.

There is no second slot for memory as advertised. a whole discussion about it is located here at the following link http://www.amazon.com/forum/laptop/ref=cm_cd_fp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx2G99T61XZXSS7&cdThread=Tx36ZK8NFC9EMIS

I stood in line on Black Friday to buy the Compaq Presario Cq58-bf9wm for 4 hours. When I got the computer home, I opened it up to add more RAM;1)there was only one dimm slot when there should be 2.2)I upgraded to a 4gb of RAM and it made the computer freeze and constantly reboot.3)The processor speed is suppose to be 1.33GHz and it's only 1.0GHz.

Those are some of the things I noticed and asked my Brother-In-Law to check his out and the exact same things, he even went as far as to say that it is a different mother board as well.

I upgraded my wife's laptop and in fact it only has one memory slot. Typically stores will not carry the single 8GB ram chip so I looked and found it at Best Buy. I had it shipped to the store which was free and cost about $40. I have had no problems with this memory upgrade and the computer is very fast and my wife loves it. Overall it was well worth the money and for the people that say that the specifications are lies on the memory slot i agree but on the processor speed they need to understand that it works like intel chips. They also have a boost feature that will automatically overclock the processor depending on your needs. It will not boost it to the 1.3ghz if you are checking your email. Hope this helps.

ASUS U47A-RHI7N15 Laptop Computer with 14" Screen / 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3632QM 2.2 GHz Processor

ASUS U47A-RHI7N15 Laptop Computer with 14' Screen / 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3632QM 2.2 GHz Processor / Windows 8 / 8 GB DDR3 RAM Memory / Wireless-N / 1000 GB Hard Drive / HDMI / USB 3.0 / Up to 7 hours of battery lifeRight out of the gate, this has been an impressive laptop. No, it's not an ultrabook, but it's reasonably light, at 4.4 lbs. It also has features, like a DVD reader/burner, full size HDMI port, etc., that are lacking on many budget notebooks these days.

Pros:

*Fast. Very fast. It's an i7 chipset, and it truly flies through most tasks.

*8 GB of RAM, straight out of the box. What a joy, not having to deal with upgrading.

*One of the best keyboards of this style that I've ever used. Nice feedback, responsive, and easy to type on (I so wish I had the same keyboard on my much more expensive U31)

*While not the fastest, the hard drive is huge. 1TB is almost unprecedented for a laptop.

*Great fit and finish. Everything feels solid, the screen hinges really grab (sadly lacking in many notebooks), no wobble from the screen when it's up. This is not a delicate flower of a notebook -it's solid and substantial.

*Good port selection, including a pair of USB 3 ports. No VGA, but full-sized HDMI. Wired Ethernet.

*Backlit Keyboard w/adjustable brightness.

*Surprisingly good sound from front-firing speakers.

*ASUS Instant-On works flawlessly. Boots from sleep in seconds. (Boot from shutdown takes much longer, since the drive is not SSD, but you won't use it often. It can sleep for a month on a full charge.)

*It's quiet. I mean, really quiet, even under a load. Processor is so powerful that the fan almost never needs to run, and when it does, it's a whisper. Huge kudos to ASUS on this. It has never gotten hot on me, even transcoding video. Oh, and the exhaust is on the side, thankfully.

Cons:

*Mousepad, while solid, is a bit too stiff as a clickpad, and a bit too sensitive when tapping. However, my guess is that the clickpad will loosen-up in time. It is, however, responsive and accurate.

*Screen is the standard 1366x768 LED backlit, which is fine, but it's calibrated horribly from the factory. You need patience to get it adjusted properly. Obviously not a retina display, but, as a plus, it's non-glare, and easy in any light.

*You WILL NEED to update the BIOS immediately, to version 410 or above. Mine came with 407, and suffered lockups until I did. Fortunately, in this day and age it isn't too hard to do, but if you're not tech oriented it might be a hassle.

*Standard bloatware, including the completely unnecessary McAfee anti-virus, and some other things. Not horrible, but you'll have a bunch to get rid of.

I know there are a lot of folks ranting about Windows 8, and this is my first machine with it installed. Took a bit to get the lay of the land, but honestly, within a day I had no problems with it. Actually, I see little difference between it and Win7, once you're in desktop mode (which is where you automatically wind up most of the time anyway). Sure, there are some quirks, and new ways to do things, but so it goes. Anyhow, I'm not rating Win 8, I'm rating the hardware.

Overall, I can highly recommend this laptop. No, it's not the sleekest or fanciest. No, it's not a touchscreen. It is, however, incredibly powerful and fast for the price, and the build quality is top notch.

A WOW Laptop!

This Asus U47A is one of the finest computers I've ever owned. It's only a day old as of this writing and have yet to find anything about it I don't like. The jury is still out about the Win 8 OS, but that has nothing to do with the laptop. More on that later.

I share a previous reviewer's comments (D.M. Seeley) about the pros. I only want to add a few things to what was already covered:

The Good:

*With the i7 chipset, this machine screams!

*The 8 GB or RAM will enable the user to open just about any program that exists or have several RAM intensive programs open simultaneously.

My Windows Experience Index is as follows: Overall5.9

Processor: 7.7

Memory: 7.8

Graphics: 6.5

Gaming graphics: 6.5

Primary hard disk: 5.9

Since the Index is based on the lowest number, the addition of an SSD will boost the overall score up to 6.5. The 1TB HHD supplied on this laptop spins at only 5400 rpm hence the low reading.

*The fit and finish on this laptop is simply awesome. It reminds me of a race car that looks fast just standing still!

The Not So Good:

As said by D.M. Seeley, the bios needs to be updated right out of the box. Mine came with v. 4.7 and the latest is v.4.10. It's not terribly difficult to do but advise using Google and Youtube to get comfortable with the procedure.

This has nothing to do with Asus, but Windows 8 isn't compatible with POP3 mail. There's a work around for this but not without having to jump through many hoops. So, at this point, my favorite email client won't work but I can simply log on to my ISP's website to retrieve and send mail. If you opt to use Windows Mail, Outlook,or any of the web-based email programs no problems.

I highly suggest you download an excellent program by Soluto (soluto.com) after you finish deleting the usual bloatware from this machine. Soluto can tell you which applications are necessary and which aren't. It also gives you some very helpful information about your machine, too. Also, startup can be speeded up if you delay the loading of some of the necessary programs. I much prefer using Soluto as opposed to "msconfig."

When researching the U47A on the internet, it was suggested to uninstall Asus Live Update before connecting to the internet for the first time. Uninstalling this will keep the laptop from downloading the "USB Charger Plus" program which sometimes disables all the USB ports. Since I don't charge things from my computer, I don't need this program to begin with.

Some people have mentioned having wireless issues due to the Wireless Console 3 which I also disabled.

The above mentioned issues were never really issues with me, so your mileage may vary. Deleting or disabling certain things will hopefully keep future issues at bay.

All that being said, I highly, highly recommend this machine! Asus makes quality stuff and it's very apparent with this laptop. No matter what machine you ultimately buy, there's always a bit of tweaking to do. There was much less to do with the U47A than any other computer I've ever had. Three thumbs up, ASUS!

Don't get me wrong: spec-wise and performance-wise, this is a GREAT machine. However, there's not much point in having it if it won't power up! When you press the power switch, the light flickers for a moment and then goes out. To power up you have to remove the battery, wait, and then try again: sometimes it works, often not. From browsing the web, I found that this problem has occurred for other users, too. So, no choice but to return.

Kudos to the seller, Quality.Seller, though. Prompt delivery and easy return (he emailed me a Fedex label), with a prompt refund.

I hope ASUS sort the quality problems out, because it's got the potential to be a cracking laptop!

I purchased this laptop last week and I am very pleased with it. It's portable, fast, and fully equipped with everything I needed. I wanted an optical drive, 14 inch screen, and much more. It also has a back-lit keyboard.

I was a bit hesitant about purchasing a laptop with Windows 8 but I actually adjusted today in no time. I decided to download Classic Shell so that I could easily see the famous "start menu." The other plus to downloading Classic Shell was that the "Tiles Start Up Screen" is totally bypassed in Windows 8 and goes directly to my desktop. Therefore, I really don't have to deal with the nuisance "Tile Screen" if I don't want to.

Overall, this is a good budget friendly laptop equipped with the average necessities of a home user.

Perfect screen and keyboard size.

It is fast, but lags. Has Windows 7 on board and all bloatware removed.

Cons:

Touchpad is not working properly. Cursor jumps around the screen.

This is hardware problem. Cannot be fixed with drivers update.

Asus should recall laptops with faulty touchpads.

To fix it, you will need to remove aluminum foil under the touchpad, but I was not able to disassemble it. It looks like I have to break mounting clips around the edges.

Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen Laptop (Silky Silver)

Acer Aspire V5-471P-6605 14-Inch Touchscreen LaptopI will keep this relatively short-you get what you pay for! For the current listed price there is no other 14" touchscreen on the market at this price point. I have now had this laptop for nearly a week and it is pretty fast. I ordered 4gb of ram along with the computer to upgrade to 8gb total. This makes all the difference and for roughly $25 you can get the most out of this computer with this simple upgrade that a child could install. Backlit keyboard is great and illuminates nicely without blinding you in very dark locations. As for the fit and finish-I personally like it. It really is silky in feel. The computer itself is solidly built and all parts fit well. Also, the speakers on this thing are great for a budget laptop. They get a lot louder than previous laptops I've had and with more body. They really sound the best when the laptop is sitting on a hard surface so they can reflect sound off of it since they are on the bottom. My only issues with this laptop are the wifi and the smallish battery. The wifi disconnects on a regular basis and has to be reset. Three hours on the internet and I will have to reset atleast twice. I will probably just get a nano usb wifi module to fix this situation. That being said, still a great purchase as long as I get 2 years out of this thing.

This is a great laptop and definitely worth the price. I had some issues with the wifi staying connected, but went to Acer's site and downloaded a different driver and now it works perfect! I love the touchscreen! It has everything I need in a computer and very happy with the purchase.

I needed and new computer and figured Windows 8 was the future, but designed for a touch screen, so felt that that would be the way to invest. Spent the afternoon, yes it arrived in 16 hours after order placed, playing and feeling comfortable returning to "start" when I couldn't figure any other way to move on....my friends are frustrated, but without a touch screen computer I can understand the reason.....I highly recommend this computer as it is stylish, speedy and fun to work....so far it has been easy to become familiar with the system.

This computer is fast, sleek, and advanced for a budget price. The only draw back is that the wifi reception can be a little iffy at times. There has been a few times that my wife and I were sitting right next to each other with laptops at work. Her Lenovo had no apparent issues, whereas this Acer would loose signal or have limited internet connection warnings.

Lenovo IdeaPad U410 43762CU 14-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Lenovo IdeaPad U410 43762CU 14-Inch UltrabookWith regrets, I cannot recommend this laptop due to 2 key flaws:

1Problematic Intel Centrino Wireless N 2200 BGN card: worked intermittently at N levels(115 Mbps), for the most part at G levels (54 Mbps) , and occasionally not at all!

See Lenovo Forums for several comments and complaints about these Wifi issues, and it's lack of a hardware/software solution.

2Battery last for only about 4 to 4.5 hours unders regular use, about half of what Lenovo advertises.

These short comings are unfortunate, because the rest of the U410 is an excellent laptop for the money. I may have received a lemon that doesn't represent this product line, but

was dismayed to find so much negative commentary in the U410's forum on the Wifi issue.

Hi everyone, I have had this beautiful laptop for a week now. It is a quality built laptop (made of aluminum alloy) and is often compared to the mac due to its quality build. It has windows 8 which I am getting used to (coming from Windows Vista). I love the 3.0 USBs X2. You do not know how important having those is, especially when I am transferring data constantly for homework and projects for engineering. Extremely lightweight and portable which is important for me since I am moving between classes and carrying this on my backpack all dayneed something light. No "optical" drive, or CD ROM drive for playing movies/cd's/etcknow that when you are buying this since it is for making it lighter weight; one can work around this by burning the CD on another laptop and transferring via USB OR by buying an external CD ROM. I might need to purchase an external CD ROM since I desire to download photoshop... and there are 8 CD's. Good to know and be informed as you are deciding..

But, there is a design flaw in terms of the wi-fi. I was aware of an extremely common wi-fi issue coming from Lenova U series (includes this U410 and U310). People would complain that they have either 1) a disconnecting wi-fi internet problem 2) low signals until very close to wi-fi access.

My theory is that since the casing of the laptop is almost 100% thin aluminum, the metal casing is reducing the wi-fi strength. In other words, the wi-fi adaptor is like your cell phone trying to text inside a metal elevator casingreducing the signal or losing it frequently. Also like when you go through a tunnel. Maybe the design flaw is because they are almost mimicking the mac's metal chassis and they failed mimicking on one key part... like allowing an opening for the wi-fi antenna....

RegardlessMy love for this laptop will outweigh returning the laptopfor nowas I am currently purchasing an external wi-fi antenna USB. An antenna will test my hypothesis of whether it is the whole casing, which is the design flaw, or if the brand new network adaptor sucks (unlikely but possible).

Keep you posted.

Edit: 12/6/2012

Design flaw averted by simply adding on cheap external wifi adapter. Acts like an antenna to get better signals than many laptops. Yay!

I bought a CISCO Lynksis external wi-fi adapter for $49.99even though on best buy I saw it for half off. I needed internet ASAP, so I went for it (I can always order the cheaper version, then return with receipt for the current to save 25$ once it arrives)it works! I can even access my n network now. My download speed went from 0MB to 8.6MB; Upload speed from 0MB to 3.6MB on

I tentatively recommend getting this laptop and investing in a $10-50 external wifi.

The new windows 8 64 bit operating system is not user friendly at all. In fact it sets us back to the times of Windows 3.1. The laptop itself has odd error messages popping up at various times, the lenovo printed material does little to help and their instructions for fixes on the online support are far from intuitive. I am a big user of Lenovo in the workplace and thought it would be great for home use. Just not the case, the support line and support documentation is not consumer friendly. In fact a number of the downloads they have that supposedly could fix my issues once loaded say that my hardware is not supported for this download. When I selected the download by first giving the model and OS operating on my laptop. All in all very dissatisfied.

I absolutely love this laptop. To tell you the truth I thought I would regret getting a notebook without a CD drive, but the realty is that I do not own a piece of software that I can't get off the web. The keyboard is what you would expect from Lenovo, solid and comfortable. I sometimes forget that this is a 14in laptop it feels both substantial and solid.

Sony VAIO EL2 Series VPCEL24FX/B 15.5-Inch Laptop (Charcoal Black)

Sony VAIO EL2 Series VPCEL24FX/B 15.5-Inch LaptopI absolutely loved my Sony Vaio when after about a year, I would be typing (like so) and look up and the cursor would have jumped back to 10-15 words prior and continue typing in a prior part of the sentence/paragraph. As I type this, it has happened twice so far. I looked it up and it seems to be an issue with Sony Vaio and other than getting a wireless mouse (and what good is that with a laptop) there is nothing that can be done. Very frustrating and dissappointing!

After just a month or so of purchasing my Vaio laptop, the mouse and keyboard stopped working. It was under warranty and a technician replaced the motherboard. I asked for a new laptop rather than have the board replaced, but SONY refused. It's less then a year later and now the laptop won't boot up and if it finally does, the screen will go black after a few minutes. We took it to be repaired again and the technician said the hardware is defective. Basically, SONY sent us a defective laptop through and through. It's out of warranty now and SONY pretty much told us they're not going to make it right for us.

In a nutshell, we paid $800 for a defective laptop that barely lasted long enough for the warranty to expire.

DO NOT BUY SONY!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a 10 year old DELL that's still going strong.

This Sony laptop is good for the $500 range, with decent specifications that lets the user do basic computing (microsoft office, editing software), web surfing, and for media purposes (watching a movie, streaming, playing music). I'll break down this review into several parts: Hardware, keyboard, Design, touchpad, screen, and performance.

Hardware

* Some connections: 4 USB 2.0, 1 HDMI input, DVD drive, VGA port. All basic necessities.

* The AMD Dual core E 450 1.65 Ghz processor isn't bad. It doesn't have enough juice to play games, but it does give you enough power to run through programs like Microsoft Word, powerpoint, and some editing software (windows movie maker) fairly easily. Just don't expect it to be blazing fast. The processor is one of the main weakpoints of this laptop.

* 4 GB of RAM (Can upgrade to 8GB RAM) is more than enough RAM for computing tasks. Windows 7 64 Bit is the installed OS.

* The AMD Radeon 6320 Graphics card is a step up from integrated graphics. It won't run powerful games like Crysis 2 nor Bioshock, but it will smoothly run some of the less graphic-intensive games like Left 4 dead 2, counter strike, Call of duty 4, and team fortress.

Keyboard

* The keys are in an island layout and keys generally feel quiet and comfortable. I've adjusted to the island style, but I still prefer the keys to be together.

* There is no flex. The keyboard is stable.

* Keys are responsive and have good feedback. Keys "pop" back up quickly, which is a plus for fast typists.

Design

* I like the black and gray pattern that is on the front cover and palm rest. The pattern includes squares, hexagons, and parallelogram (finally, geometry comes in handy). It gives it a subtle, but bold texture to the laptop.

* The speakers are placed on the horizontal panel where the screen meets the keyboard. The power button and indicators are placed in the top right corner. The placement of the power button and speakers make good sense.

* The battery charger is thick, sturdy, and feels built to last.

Touchpad

* The touchpad is positioned a little bit off centered to the left, which is a different. Notebooks and netbooks I've tried in the past have had the touchpad centered. I like this subtle change. It also reduces the chance of the right palm accidentally grazing the touchpad while typing.

* The touchpad has a nice texture and is very responsive. The left and right clicks are rigid and isn't too loud when clicked.

Screen

* The native resolution is 1366 x 768. The screen isn't as bright as I had expected. Even at the highest brightness, it still feels a little bit dim. Still, details and picture quality is good.

Performance

* The graphics card is a huge plus and gives the laptop some juice when it comes to processing pictures, and providing a smooth experience. The dual core 1.65 ghz CPU will do fine with basic computing tasks. While it is capable of gaming and heavier programs like Photoshop, it's barely playable/usable.

* Bloatware (as expected) is installed on this laptop. There are some useful programs, but most should be uninstalled for an optimal computing experience.

Overall, programs and loading is generally instantaneous. Again, not blazing fast, but definitely good enough for schoolwork & at the workplace, some editing, and media (movies, streaming, and music). This laptop has a nice, stylish design and is a decent laptop for the $500 price range.

Toshiba Satellite C675-S7106 Laptop Computer / 17.3-inch HD Display Screen / Intel Core i3-2350M 2.

Toshiba Satellite C675-S7106 Laptop Computer / 17.3-inch HD Display Screen / Intel Core i3-2350M 2.3GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 RAM Memory / 500GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW / 6-cell Battery / Windows 7 Home Premium / BlackToshiba seems to be reviewed well, and I've heard they're good with their warranties. I had been looking for a laptop to use in the kitchen, when i can't access one of the pcs in the house, for a few weeks. I did'nt need too much ram, but I knew I wanted an Intel processor, preferably one of the core models. This one has the core i3, which so far is great. Anyone can get this thing up and running. After powering it up, it recognized my wifi network and asked me to select which signal I wanted and to enter the network's password. It also was easy to join my existing Homegroup of the other 2 pcs in the house, so now I can access files/photos/vids from the other 2 on this laptop and vice versa. I also did a test by printing an email and that worked fine as well. I purchased a Logitech M315 wireless mouse with the nano receiver to use with this even though it has the built in mouse pad with the 2 buttons for left / right click. using the built in mouse is easy enough, but i prefer a regular mouse. No installation for that either, just plug into the usb port and it was recognized and working.

I bought this laptop and the mouse at a large electronics retailer ( don't know the lagality of naming the store ) whose name rhymes with "Vest Fry ". Anyway, the price, this week-while on sale, was only $399.99 for the laptop and the mouse was only $14.99; so i'd say it was a great deal. i just noticed Amazon's price dropped a bit today as well.

One mistake i made, was not even thinking to check if the laptop had built in wifilike the kindle Fire or other tabletsIt does! So, I actually bought another ae2500 usb adapter thinking i needed to plug that in to catch the signal from my router like the other pc in my daughter's room. Nope, don't need it. the built in wifi works great, so I'll be returning that item to the store.

It came with some promo items like: a $10. EMusic card for downloading songs, and a coupon code for 15 % off Toshiba laptop accessories and service plans. I do plan on using that Toshiba code to buy an extra lithium ion battery as a back up so I can have double the battery life should I need it.

They reccommend you create system restore discs or use a flash drive to do it. It's very simple to do, and would be a way to restore your laptop to out of the box condition if there ever was a need to do so (crash, etc). It will tell you before you start how many discs or what size flash drive you would need to have. i needed 5 discs to complete it. Just remember to label them in sequence so you know what order to insert them in ( disc 1 of 5 ; disc 3 of 5 etc)

I'm very pleased with the purchase, especially at the price i got it for. I mainly just either watch videos on Hulu + or Netflix or use it for web browsing, so the amount of memory for my purposes is ample. It is not too heavy either, though I do find it a bit wide, but not so much so that it's a problem. Originally I was looking at 15.6 in laptops, but just couldn't resist this one when I saw the price and the processor.

quick notes:

Webcam

2 usb ports

ac power adapter

optical disc drive

" " Microsoft Office 2010 **starter version**

" " Norton Internet security Just need to activate it, or use one of your own choosing

One last thing; I plan to get my own Internet security suite as my license for other 2 pcs is almost up. I'll get another AVG 2 year 3 user paid Internet security, as I had zero problems with that for last few years. I did however activate the Norton so I have some protection until that ships. The reason I did activate it was because it did Not ask me for credit card infojust name, email etc. I know then that although Iwill have to uninstall the Norton when the AVG comes, they can't turn around in a year or a month and renew the antivirus because they don't have any $$ info. That actually happened to me last year after the pc was 1 year old, and the store I bought it at which had a Kapers anti v for free 6 months with the pc I bought, had actually charged my bank card for another year of the anti v. I had uninstalled it before the 6 months were up to load the AVG, but in order to get that initial free protection, they had my cc# from the pc purchase because it was a package deal. They just went ahead and charged me and I never knew, because I had switched over to my AVG, and also had a different email. I actually thought someone had stolen my bank card #'s and had gone to that store to buy something. Eventually, after calling the store's cust svc, they told me what happened. Since then, I've been very wary about such things, and i never give a card for a trial period on something unless I'm pretty sure I'm going to keep it. Just an FYI, because I was pleasantly surprised that they will protect my pc for a trial without first taking my $ info. thought that was cool.

Very nice 17.3' screen, 2nd generation i3 CPU and affordable price

1. the screen is very nice. 17.3", very bright and clear. Looks like Macbook pro.

2. It comes with the new Intel second generation i3 CPU. It's fast enough to run daily programs like office, Photoshop, etc..

3. The price is fair enough. A similar SONY or HP laptop will cost $600 plus.

4. I bought this one, upgraded the memory to 2X4gb, and replaced the hard drive with a Corsair Force 3 240 GB SATA 3 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive CSSD-F240GB3-BK

Now the system is even faster than my i7 desktop.

I highly recommend this laptop to all. And I suggest buyers like me, do the 2 upgrade, upgrade the memory to 8GB ( cost me $40 ) and replace the hard drive with a SSD ( cost me $300 ). Then this laptop will last at least 10 years.

Buy Toshiba Satellite C675-S7106 Laptop Computer / 17.3-inch HD Display Screen / Intel Core i3-2350M 2. Now

I purchased a Toshiba Laptop(C675-S7106) on March 24, 2012. 30 day return policy and 1 year warranty. Within 2 weeks I contacted Toshiba Customer Service regarding a problem with the internal speakers. It took an additional 2 weeks before a technician determined there was a problem with the laptop. I was advised that the computer could be returned to the company for repair, but, I would have to pay a $25 "shipping / handling fee." Despite my argument Toshiba stood fast on that fee.My question is, why, if I purchased a new laptop, with warranties, reported a problem within 2 weeks, it was determined by Toshiba that there was a defect, why should I have to pay anything. Very poor customer relations. I will be VERY, VERY, wary next time I purchase a consumer electronics product. My research will focus on quality of the product and quality of customer service. Very Disappointed.

Computer is great. Full size keyboard and big widescreen display. Processor is fast, memory and hard drive are more than enough. Only complaint is the speakers, they are terrible. Headphones and or external speakers sound fantastic, but built in speakers are bad!

I got this laptop from Best Buy for only $399 and I am so surprised to see this selling on Amazon for 509 bucks!

This laptop is really good, fast and wide screen, great resolution and vivid display except for the speaker which sound like the squeak of a mouse. You better buy it a pair of new desktop speaker or a set of good headphones.

There was an error msg "not genuine software" which is very common with Microsoft Vista, however the vendor should have included a note and the best way to resolve. Only of course if they desire repeat business!!!

I bought this for a friend and he love it. It is nice for playing windows XP games like football manager 2008

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ice Blue Brushed Aluminum)

Toshiba Satellite S855-S5378 15.6-Inch LaptopUsually I go with Asus for PC laptops. I'm replacing my MacBook Pro (I just don't need a Mac) and had two major requirements... an i7 Intel processor and 8G of RAM minimum. This system matched those easily.

There is a similar version of this laptop that has a Blue Ray burner instead of the DVD-RW, a much better graphics card (with 2G onboard RAM...), and an SSD boot drive with a 5400RPM regular drive (instead of just the 5400 regular drive). It was a little over $900. None of these were things I absolutely needed so I opted for the savings.

I have one qualm which docked it a star. The colors on the monitor are a bit muted. Its brightness, clarity, and so forth are all great, but the contrasts aren't as good. Then again, I am almost always hooked up to a dual monitor (which I haven't tested yet) instead of using the laptop monitor so I don't care quite as much, and movies still look fine, but don't expect the screen to be something fabulous.

The one thing that almost kept me from buying the system was its form factor. I was afraid from the pictures that it was going to be bulky and ugly. I have been pleasantly surprised, it is sleek. The weight is very well balanced, the keyboard is very comfy (and full size), the touch pad is well placed (I'm not having any palm problems).

In so far as speed, absolutely no problems there at all.

I really like this system, and am looking forward to a good long run with it.

The other reviewer was upset that the specifications "did not match" the computer. As for speed, the processor runs "normally" at 2.4 GHz with turbo boost of speeds up to 3.4 GHz. I agree that the speed may be misleading, but it's important to note that with mobile processors, the speed difference is employed to help prolong battery life and only deliver the 3.4 GHz performance when absolutely needed.

As for the hard drive only being reported as 688 GB when it is supposed to be 750 GB, there are 2 things probably affecting thisFirst, there is probably a hidden recovery partition and Windows won't report that as part of the drive. Second, Windows reports drives using powers of 1024 whereas drive manufacturers us powers of 1000 to report drive size. As an example, my computer has a 750 GB drive, but Windows only reports it as 654 GB. The recovery partition is using 29 GB and the remainder is accounted for by the "math error" that is manifested by the 2 different methods of calculating drive size. If you do a search for why the difference in reported hard drive sizes, you will find many articles that will explain this more clearly.

I have used two Toshiba laptops, this one and another Satellite model before this. Both of them have serious problem with Wi-fi connectivity. I simply didn't realize it until I bought a Dell laptop for my mom. Both Toshiba laptops would disconnect from Wi-fi after sometime, especially if I was downloading big files, I had to reset the router each time. I kept blaming Comcast first, I even called them and complained. Then I started blaming the router. Only after I bought Dell's laptop which stayed connected from all rooms despite the file sizes etc did I realize that the real problem was with the laptop. I even checked the Wi-fi settings to see if my settings were the problem. But they were not.

I kid you not. These laptops really do have serious Wi-fi connectivity problem and don't stay connected unless you are sitting next to the router. I rarely write reviews etc. But I wanted to make an exception in this case. I am simply fedup.

This laptop has been horrible. Since day one right out of the box its frozen on me, it even froze while writing this review. Im not sure if I got the short end of the stick I saw all the great reviews and thought it would be a great laptop, but every time I turn it on I expect it to freeze with the hope that it wont, but it still does. Ive called toshiba 5 times(spanning 4 hours and they dropped my call) and have completed 2 full recoveries but nothing has worked. I even tried to speak with a supervisor but they wouldnt transfer me. So I requested a call back. They conveniently missed me 5 days later and say they left a message but nothing came out on my voice mail. Their customer service has been sub par to say the least. They finally said they would look into the laptop and attempt to repair it. Im debating on just returning it and getting my money back and spending it on a different laptop but my brother has a toshiba laptop and it has been running perfectly since day one and he bought it 6 months ago. Thats the only reason why I still have some faith that it will work. If it doesnt then I will keep contacting them everyday until they either replace it or give me a full refund.

Dell XPS X14Z-6923SLV 14-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver)

Dell XPS X14Z-6923SLV 14-Inch LaptopI have ordered this laptop in January 2012 thru Amazon. The delivery was on time as stated on the order form. This laptop has all the features and the specs I wanted. It is very light that you can take anywhere you go without complaining abouth the weight. The other feature that I like was the thickness, it is less than 1" and sound from the Left and Right JBL speakers was really owesome. With the specs I have selected; 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7-2640M, 8 GB DIMM, 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive using internet was never been so fast. I would recommend this product to everyone who like to have a high end Laptop at a very affordable cost.

I must have looked at 100 different laptop models before finally going with the Dell XPS X14z. At first I had lots of recommendations for a Macbook Air or Macbook Pro, and I nearly went that direction, but in the end the Dell offered me a bit more punch for a better price. Coming from an HP laptop, I immediately appreciated the higher quality build of the laptop body, the better keyboard, and the much nicer trackpad. The 14" size is perfect for travelers that don't want to be on a cramped keyboard. The laptop is attractive, but I don't feel like you're paying extra for style here. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros

Compact and lightweight, but doesn't feel cheap

Great keyboard

USB connections in the back keep cables out of your way

Fast boot up and wake up from sleep

Responsive trackpad

Runs quieter and much cooler than other Core i7 laptops I've tested

Good battery life

Better than average sound quality from speakers

Runs StarCraft 2 well in medium settings as well as other newer PC games

Comes with Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements for free

A whopping 8GBs of RAM right out of the box

Cons

Audio and mic jacks are a bit stiff

I wish the screen resolution was a bit higher

No option for a matte screen

Quite a bit of pre-installed stuff that you don't want or need

Not one USB port on the side, so you using thumb drives makes you have to reach to the back

Overall this is a fantastic laptop. It's cons are heavily outweighed by its pros and the complaints I do have are quite minor in the first place. This is a great everyday laptop and it handles PC gaming well enough to give you something to use on the go when you're not on your more powerful desktop. It handles design work okay, but if you're doing it professionally, I'd find something with a bit higher resolution screen.

In the end, I'm really happy I went this direction instead of the Apple and Samsung laptops as I got a much higher price to performance value.

Buy Dell XPS X14Z-6923SLV 14-Inch Laptop (Elemental Silver) Now

I've owned a ton of Dells over the years with this being 5th Dell laptop and 4th in the XPS line of laptops. I used to own a Dell XPS 14 (the original 2010 model, not the 2012 model) which was one of the worst laptops I had ever owned. It was so bad that Dell eventually sent me a 15z (the bigger screen version of the 14z) as a replacement laptop after 7 repairs on the XPS 14. After nagging Dell for a couple of days, they sent me a 14z instead. I've owned the 14z for about two weeks now, and I have to say this is by far the best laptop I've ever owned.

For the amount of hardware you get, this thing is TINY. It's basically about the same size as a MacBook Pro, yet it packs a full 2.80 GHz i7 with discrete graphics that can be switched off to save battery power. You can also go up to a 750GB 7200 RPM HDD and 8GB of RAM. Mine came with a 500GB drive and 6GB of RAM, which is perfectly fine for me.

Screen: In terms of dimensions, this is simply the thinnest screen I've seen on a notebook. Its ridiculously thin. I would rate the color production and overall quality as above average though. Its definitely not the best display out there on laptops, but its not bad either. I use a external monitor for all my media stuff (gaming, movies, etc) so I don't frat much about screen quality. It's good enough.

Performance: Its kind of hard to tell peroformance specs between PCs but I would have to say that the 14z with a 2.8GHz i7 definitely "feels" faster than my previous laptops, which either had a Core i5 2410m (2.3GHz) or a Core i5 560M (2.67GHz). Everything loads up very quickly and never seems to lag. I haven't run any high end games yet but have played HD videos while running some old school games like Need For Speed Carbon and Most Wanted. In both cases, the i7 and GT520M held their own just fine. The hard drive performs as well as any 7200RPM drive and overall system boot-up is fairly quick.

Keyboard and Trackpad: This is one of the two categories that separates the good from the great laptops to me. Usually, Dell gets the keyboard right as I had experienced with my four previous Dell laptops. This one...not so much. The chicklet style keyboard is a nice upgrade to the XPS lineup but the keys are a bit hard when compared to something like a MacBook Pro keyboard. It is, however, something that you get used to after a few days of use. The trackpad, on the other hand, is nice. For a windows laptops that have notoriously small trackapds, this thing has a decent sized trackpad that squeezes out every inch it can from the 13.3 inch form factor. I will say that the trackpad is a bit over-sensitive at times and you may need to mess around with the settings to make it work the way you want. Overall, the keyboard and trackpad to me are both above average. Nothing special but more than good enough.

Battery Life: This is the other deciding factor in terms of how good a laptop is. Keep in mind that this laptop comes with an i7 and discrete graphics, so you can't really expect great battery life here. The question is whether or not its good enough for your needs. Overall, I'm seeing anywhere from 2.5 to about 4 hours of battery life depending on settings and usage, which is about expected. I would've liked to see 3.5 to 5 hours, but 4 hrs of usage with screen dimmed down a bit and a few power saving options enabled isn't bad for the hardware package I'm getting.

Noise and Heat: To me, this category has always been the downfall of the XPS line. I have yet to own a single XPS that doesn't get loud or hot. My XPS 14 got so hot that it started melting the paint off the palmrest. While the heat issues are far far less with this laptop, they are still there. My suggestion is buying a laptop cooling pad, which is something to consider buying with any expensive laptop. Spending 20 or 30 bucks to protect a three figure investment makes sense to me. Either way, noise (especially the back fan) and heat are definitely issues with this model and I would bet my money that its an issue with all of Dells high end notebooks. You should be fine if you don't mind providing the laptop with some extra cooling, but don't expect this notebook to be ultra-quiet or ultra cool.

Peripherals and sound: Dell used to use JBL speakers in the older XPS lineup, which had incredible sound for laptops. This one, unfortunately, doesn't use the same speaker technology. Still, the sound is good enough for a laptop. I imagine most people with laptops are carrying around a pair of headphones like me and only use their speakers for when trying to watch something with a group of people, and the speakers on this unit are perfect for tasks like that.

As far as the peripherals go, this unit is a bit short on USB ports and yes most of the ports are in the back. That can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on who you ask. My in-home setup includes a monitor, a USB dongle for a keyboard, a usb adapter for some external speakers, and a few other cables that are escaping my mind right now. Basically, I have no choice but to use a USB hub anyways, so I don't really mind having just 2 USB ports, neither do I mind having the ports in the back as it keeps my desk really clean. If you're the type that will switch USB in and out all the time, then I can see how having the ports in the back can get annoying though.

Overall, this is solid buy at the right price. If you're paying anything more than 900 bucks for it, its probably too much given Dell has already come up with its successor. At the right price, this is a great deal since fewer and fewer laptops nowadays offer small form factor notebooks with full performance specs like this laptop offers.

I actually bought this laptop from Costco but felt that it would be good to put my review up here too. My purchase price was $1000 and overall I am pretty happy with this laptop.

I'm going to college next year and it was important to me that I get a high performance laptop that wouldn't be too cumbersome for me to take around to classes. After using it for about a month, there are really good and aspects but some shortcomings.

Good:

i7 processer. you're not going to get any better at this price range. just a heads up, it is not the newest 3rd gen i7 processor that apple is putting into their macbook pros.

750g hardrive. Honestly, I don't really care for SSD's because anything less that 300 gigs is completely unacceptable in my opinion just because I don't want to carry around a portable hardrive that I could easily lose or break. With the xps 14z, you get plenty of memory

14in. display in a 13.3 inch case: this is really awesome. Not only has dell removed the annoying black bevel that you usually get around most laptops, their shuriken screen has also allowed them to make the screen SUPER thin. some reviews say that you have a hard time seeing the whole screen but for me, that was only in very intense sunlight. When working outside at say Starbucks for example, I only had to up the brightness a little and I was fine. Also, there really is no need for full HD graphics on a laptop with a 14 in screen.

Graphics: I know that college is about studying but I want to have some fun too. I wanted a graphics card that would be able to handle easy to moderate level gaming. I was able to play Skyrim on moderate settings without any problems, even with other applications running in the background.

Dimmensions: obviously this is dell's attempt at a macbook pro and I have to say that they did pretty well. The computer is super sleek and appealing to the eye. Most impressively, they've been able to keep the laptop to under an inch in height.

Backlight: love this feature, really helpful and the sensor knows exactly when you do and don't need it

Speakers: bass is non existant but there is really no distortion even when blasting linkin park at maximum volume

Bad:

ports in back: ALL of the ports are in the back which makes plugging and unplugging usb's difficult without standing up. Also, you only get 2 usb ports which means you're probably going to be plugging and unplugging things a lot if you're going to be using this at home too.

heating: during normal use, this laptop is really cool and comfortable to use. Once you start running some higher workload programs such as Skyim or Adobe Premiere etc, you're really going to feel the heat in your left palm rest. Also the fan is noticible. This also happens when you open several programs or many web pages. Normal use however (4-6 moderate workload programs) is totally fine and the fan and heat are not even noticible.

webcam: basically, with such a thin screen, you're not going to get anywhere near HD quality

So that's about it, it's a great computer and I feel like it's going to serve me well in these few years to come. It was a little pricey compared to other products out there but I was willing to pay the price for a higher quality computer. Don't bother yourselves with ultrabooks and the such, this laptop really is the way to go

Hi everyone,

I bought this computer like 20 days ago, it's really fast and has all the features that I wish it had. Asus® U46E-RAL5 Laptop Computer With 14" LED-Backlit Screen & 2nd Gen Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M Proc

Asus® U46E-RAL5 Laptop Computer With 14' LED-Backlit Screen & 2nd Gen Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M Processor With Turbo Boost 2.0/ 8GB memory/ 750GB hard driveI just got this as a back to school computer. Its been excellent and responsive in running all the MS Office programs and photo editing software I use. But in your off hours, don't expect it to do much running any moderately recent games. Despite impressive specs otherwise (considering the price) It has no video card. You can run anything that runs in a window great, but don't expect to go full screen with World of Warcraft or anything. Also, it sounds like it has one speaker... just one.... to the right. If you might listen to music while you work, I recommend a set of desktop portable speakers. I got the Razer ones myself and it works like a charm.

Overall, great for work and school. I'm happy.

I really have no complaints with this notebook. I am on my second one as the first one I had, had a dvd tray that wouldn't close. The second one I got works perfectly.

It's very fast, video playback is smooth, sound quality is very good (as laptops go). Has plenty of memory to run a multitude of things in the background and then some. I haven't experienced any lag yet and I typically have multiple windows and programs running.

The aesthetics of the notebook are amazing I love the swirled aluminum affect, it gives it a really nice solid feel and a cool touch.

The keyboard is very nice, no wiggle in the keys that so many laptops have. Everything on the notebook feels very solid.

Battery life is far above average I would say I get a solid 8 hours with moderate use, mostly internet surfing with a 30 min show or 2.

Heat displacement hasn't been to bad my left leg gets a little warm sometimes but for the most part the notebook stays nice and cool.

Screen is very bright and has very good contrast.

The graphics are kind of weak if your expecting to play any major games off it. e.g. Battlefield, WoW, Homefront, etc...

Have not used the built in WiDi yet but I can't wait to try it; awesome option to have! WiMax works great on 4G. The WiFi range is good overall will pick up from quite a distance.

Overall I am very pleased with this notebook and would certainly recommend it to a friend. Previous reviews show some malfunction of hardware but sometimes bad things happen to good electronics. Don't let one or two bad reviews sway you from a really nice notebook.

Purchased mine almost one month ago. Worked when I took it out of the box, but failed latter the next day after leaving on the charger overnight. I removed the battery and held the power one button for several minutes to clear anything, reinstalled the battery and hooked up the AC adapter. And it worked, until this past evening. Same thing happen again. Repeated the same steps and no results. Called Asus and they indicated that it needs to be sent back to the factory in CA for repair. So off it goes at my expense.

The only complaint I have found with this model was the sound quality, which for me wasn't critical. However, this power failure on POST is a major issue. Will add more, once I get it back, hopefully within 30 days, which I find complete and totally unacceptable.

Would I purchase this item again, probably not!

ASUS cut corners to deliver a low-price, light weight laptop.

The hinges were flimsy and broke under normal opening and closing. The track pad buttons wore out fast. And the speakers were really bad.

Other than the backlit keyboard, the changes on the new models are basically attempts to fix these workmanship and construction problems.

The problem is that when the machine breaks, it will not be covered under the standard warranty. That's a big problem. Because when it breaks down and it will whatever money you saved up front will be lost in repair fees.

ASUS used to stand apart as a quality product at a reasonable price and with excellent warranty support.

No longer.

Now they are an average product at a decent price and with poor warranty service.

If you are going to buy this, get an extended warranty that covers any form of breakage. They will look for a loophole to not cover the device.

Buyer beware

You cant find a laptop with these specs for the price!! I did alot of research and ended up with Asus. The Asus U-46 has a metal finish giving it a very solid and durable feel. It is ultra thin and modern looking as well. This laptop is not for a serious gamer but perfect for your everyday business person or student. I call it the Mac of Pc's. PC Magazine gave this laptop great reviews also. I love it so far and very impressed with the quality.

Acer Aspire One A0722-0369 11.6" 2G 320GB Amd C-60

Acer Aspire One A0722-0369 11.6' 2G 320GB Amd C-60This is an excellent netbook and I am very pleased with the overall look and performance! I like the overall design for starters. It was easy to use, had all the right features including decent resolution and sound, and it is so lightweight I wonder if it's in the carrier case sometimes. If you're a serious gamer this may not be for you; but if you mainly do social networking, music downloads, blogging, journaling and internet browsing this is a great choice. It was easy to watch movies on as well and mine came with Nook (amongst other things), which I have as yet to use. It also worked well with my paranormal investigation equipment and a programmer friend described it as a 'dream' to connect up to a network.I highly recommend this netbook.

I bought this amazing little computer for WiFi Internet use and for storing and playing back videos downloaded through the Amazon.com Unbox software. The display was great, and it played videos flawlessly; to me a miracle at the price point. Here I had everything my laptop has only without the DVD drive.

The problem is that the display developed a blue line down the middle that was there all the time. I researched and found that display problems seem to happen a lot with the Aspire One series of machines. Since I was within the return window, I deinstalled everything, wiped the data clean, and returned it. That was a lot of work for very little use. I'm thankful for the return policy, but not for all the wasted time commissioning and decommissioning this machine. It takes time to do that correctly.

I think Acer should have tested the display more before putting the machine into production. That said, I'm very open to buying a future version of this little miracle computer.

It is hard to find anything substantial to complain about here. The two downsides I see are that the display is glossy and difficult to read in bright light (like most laptops) and that the construction appears relatively cheap.

Nevertheless, this is exactly what I wanted and expected, a more or less disposable small laptop that would run Ubuntu well enough. Never even booted up Windows. I installed the Ubuntu 12.04 beta. Everything works: wifi, standby mode, encrypted lvm. 2GB of RAM seems to be plenty for my use.

I actually really like this netbook. It's the perfect netbook for someone like me who just needs it to do some online bill pay, Facebook, and general web surfing. I am also using it to save pictures, and so far so good. If you are a student, or someone who will get more than 6+ hours a day out of it, then I would go for a higher model. But this Acer has really impressed me.

Bought this as a straight upgrade from my Asus 1001p which was 3 yrs old and having problems charging because of the plug port. Once you uninstall the bloatware that comes prepackaged with everything these days and optimize windows 7 to run better on your netbook (search google) it works very well. Obviously I'm not gonna do any video editing or play the latest games on it but for surfing the web, watching videos, listening to music, school work and all the basics its great. As a plus the charger port is bigger and sturdier than that on my old asus.

HP - Pavilion 17.3' Laptop - 4GB Memory - 500GB Hard Drive - AMD Quad-Core A8-4500MOK Well it's big, the keys are large and have a good feel/feedback. Built in web cam/mic works nice if your into that. Lots of other aux inputs usb, hdmi, mic in, earphone plug card reader yadyada...

Performance is good for some games, BF2 and Unreal Tourny run fine but Farcry3 is way to slow even at the games lowest settings, but it does load and the graphics look outstanding to me.

Battery power is decent, I guess about 5-6 hours, as long as your not taxing the crap out of the system. Haven't timed how long it will play a dvd movie, just web serving, email, angry birds...

The plastic black case is tough but I wouldn't drop test it.I really like the textured/recessed scroll pad, this sucker was made for windows 8. Two fingers and your ready to expand, contract, basically everything you can do on a touchscreen you can do on this (don't quote me there though).

Windows 8 (OS comes preloaded/no discs but can be backed up once) is like the new kid next door, once you get to know him/her then things aren't as bad as they seemed. It's that transition that's hard. Now if you have a desktop w/out one of these laptop scroll pad things, well you may have a harder time, not that the mouse won't work it's just that Win8 seems to be built to appease both mouse and touchscreen users at the same time and things aren't organized as before. I admit I had a hard time at first (less so 2 weeks later) but it does get easier. Until I get better with Win8 I'm using a program called Classic Start Menu. It's a big help sometime.

Toshiba Portege R835-P84 13.3-Inch Laptop

Toshiba Portege R835-P84 13.3-Inch LaptopBeing a college student who needs access to a computer almost every day for a variety of tasks, I was in the market for a laptop with relatively high processing power and good battery life. When I stumbled on the Toshiba Portege R835-P84, I knew it was the perfect laptop for my needs. I have had it for almost a year and could not be more satisfied. The main pros about this little machine are this:

-it has an Intel i5 processor (2.40 GHz, 3.00 GHz with Turbo Boost Technology) which allows it to boot up very fast and can handle multiple programs running at once with ease

-it has a 640 GB hard drive capacity which is quite impressive for such a small computer, it means I don't need to consider an external hard drive to store school file

-the battery life is awesome...I have been achieving about 6-7 hours w/o charging and thats while the computer is being used for writing papers, browsing the web, you name it

-it weighs just over 3 pounds and is super compact (I don't even feel it in my backpack)

-despite being a 13-inch laptop and weighing only 3 pounds, it still has a CD/DVD drive!

-comes standard with a spill resistant keyboard and HDMI port

-if the computer senses an impact, the hard drive is automatically shifted into a safe position so that files are not lost (it is actually quite sensitive and you can hear it happen if you pick up the laptop quickly or abruptly...however this feature can be disabled easily by going into the settings)

-the frame is very sturdy and feels solid when carried

-it's Energy Star Certified and has a really cool Toshiba Eco program where you can monitor power usage in watts and adjust power settings depending on your needs

The few cons are the following:

-doesn't come with Bluetooth (I don't understand why not, but I don't really use it that anyway)

-the keys on the keyboard are kind of flat and may take getting used to...I did and now love writing papers with it

-the speakers are average

-the left and right click buttons are rather loud when clicked, I usually tap the touchpad for left click

Overall, you probably can't find a better laptop in this price range and I really enjoy working or just having fun with it. I think this laptop is equal to and beats the MacBook in many aspects including processing and features, and at less than 2/3 the price, it's definetely a good bargain.

Did much research for an ultralight computer to replace my heavy weight Dell laptop. This was just what was needed.

I bought this laptop a few weeks ago. The laptop is almost the same as the P81/p56x version, but was sold at lower price because of many sellers. It's very light in hand, the color is what I like. The only issue I found is that the keyboard doesn't feel as good as my old Thinkpad T61. But for a 13" laptop, I shouldn't complain about it at all.

Samsung Q330-JA01 13.3" Notebook

Samsung Q330-JA01 13.3' NotebookI like Samsung notebooks, i have one RF511 with Core i7, it's fast, good finish, but the my Samsung Q330 have problems with lcd, some black risks appeared, it seems that some pixels died. I had no luck with this Samsung. The finish is also fragile.

Asus K53E-BBR9 15.6" Laptop (Intel Core i5-2410m Processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB Hard Drive) Brown Suit

Asus K53E-BBR9 15.6' Laptop Brown SuitI bought this laptop from bestbuy for 479.99 plus tax in august. This laptops motherboard failed within the first 2 1/2 months. But Asus fixed it within a week so it was all good. The only thing I wish this laptop had was usb 3.0 and a 7200rpm hdd which would have been good. The 4gb ram is perfect since for a normal user you dont usually use more than 4gb of ram. This laptop is not perfect but its pretty good. Next time I believe I will buy an Asus but something with better spec's and also the i5 2410m processor is also very good and also with the turbo boast to 2.9 ghz from 2.3 is very effective.

I had been looking for a sandy bridge cpu, and had been tracking prices on multiple sites, when this came up I was amazed. I also had a $75 gift certificate and that made it even more appealing. I did put a ssd in it, took a bit of work to shrink the hdd down to the size I could put it on a ssd, but once I had figured it out, this thing flies now. Video loads and looks awesome, wei is at 6.5 which I think is pretty sweet for a laptop just over $400. It says it's a refurbished model, but it looked brand-spankin-new when I got it, besides some of the proprietary software that didn't work this was a fantastic buy.

I purchased this laptop from BestBuy for $449.00 in November, 2011. I have had no problems with it so far and it is quite adequate for surfing the web or any other functions that I do. The pros are numerous and the only cons that I have with it is it has only 3 usb ports which isn't adequate if you are running a cool pad and wireless mouse (I don't like using the touchpad). That leaves only 1 usb port for digital cam or other accessories. Web cam is adequate for low end pc. The only other con for me is the speakers, which are junk, otherwise I would have given this laptop a 5. Would recommend this unit to anyone who is looking for a budget priced laptop.

Sony 15.5" Vaio VPCEB3TFX/T Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook 500GB Computer PC

Sony 15.5' Vaio VPCEB3TFX/T Intel Core i3 Laptop 4GB Notebook 500GB Computer PCThis is a great laptop for the price. It's fast, the picture is clear and I love the number key pad on the right side. My only complaint was the sound. There isn't much volume and the sound was weak and tinny. That was easily fixed with a $29.00 Gigaware speaker I bought at Radio Shack that sits on top of your open laptop. The sound is incredible for $30 and it plugs in with a USB cord. I would recommend this computer and this speaker.

Beware! The Intel wireless display feature is not available although it is advertised as such for this model. I purchased the Netgear push2tv adapter and it was a waste. I called Sony Vaio support and they took a long time to tell me that this feature is not available on this model and the software cannot be installed as the hardware is not compatible. So do no waste your time if you are buying this computer for this feature. There are other ways to stream wirelessly to your TV, but Intel wireless display is not one of them for this computer.

This rating was chosen more for the customer service provided by Best Buys on the Net, which was outstanding, than for the product itself. There is nothing wrong with the laptop...it runs perfect, and meets all my needs. But Windows 8 is NOT user friendly, and takes some getting used to.

More than meets my expectations. The only thing I wish it had is the additional number pad that the gateway laptops have.

XN517UAR#ABA HP XN517UAR#ABA HP XN517UAR#ABAAfter loading Microsoft Office Professional 2010 + Microsoft Security Essentials I began receiving messages from Microsoft that the version of Windows 7 was not authentic and that Security Essentials would shut down in 30 days in addition to automatic updates all failing. A little phrase above the time on the lower right of the screen appeared and stayed there: "not an authentic version of Windows 7". Since I had already loaded MS office professional 2010(a very expensive program)I was forced to buy an authentic version of Windows 7-and load the authentic product keyBRINGING THE TOTAL COST TO WELL OVER $400.

Over a month later this PC is full of qwirks.

DONT BUY FROM DISHONEST SELLERS LIKE THESE PEOPLE

COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE SELLER REVEALED THAT HE IS BARELY LITERATE.

The Amazon claim process is 99.9% automated and individual issues are not well addressed.

I would not want to return a pc after I loaded MS office and was forced to buy an authentic version of Windows 7. That would be returning a much more valuable product than the one I bought.

I requested a refund for the authentic version of Windows 7. The automated return process is not set up for specific requests and only offered a return.

ABSOLUTELY NOT WORTH IT!!!!

Maybe not for the power gamer but, great laptop for the adverage user. Purchased this laptop feb 2011 factory refurbed for $275 with the standard 6 month warranty given refurbs. Have had no problems. has web mike but no cam. Can always clamp one on. Must replace the battery now, but wait, That's 18 months of daily use on a 17"er. Not bad at all. To the reviewer who gave this item a one star. Sounds like your problem was with the seller trying to pull a fast one. Sorry to hear.
