Dell Latitude E6430 - 14" - Core i7 3520M - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - 4 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD -

Dell Latitude E6430 - 14' - Core i7 3520M - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - 4 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD -I spent some time with this machine when I set it up for a customer we bought it for. The machine I am reviewing is the "s" model, which was custom configured for the customer.

This is the newest variant of the Latitude business-class notebook PC's. The e6430 is designed to have the same footprint as a 13" notebook, but sports a larger 14" display. It's still really compact, although not as thin or light as a competitor's notebook, but that's ok because this isn't designed to be an ultra-lightweight machine. It's still about 4 lbs, which is a couple lbs. lighter than the E6500 or D5500 series Lats. It's pretty thin, not as thin as my MacBook Pro though.

It's made mostly out of plastic, which isn't a bad thing because plastic is lightweight and durable, and if you drop it, it won't dent or deform like an aluminum or aluminum-clad machine. The top of the display cover and some trim pieces are clad in brushed aluminum though, and that makes it look really nice and adds some scratch resistance. You still get the same features as the bigger Lats like the weird pointer button and finger buttons above the trackpad, which is also programmable for multitouch input (pinch to zoom, rotate, etc.). It's a little small, but that's not a problem as I found it really easy to use. The trackpad mouse buttons and palm rests are coated in soft touch rubber, which feels really nice. The keyboard is backlit and has 3 brightness settings. It turns off when you aren't using it though,. The keyboard is sealed underneath to protect the components inside if you splash or spill something on it. The permimeter of the laptop is also reinforced with plastic and the display lid is sealed to the chassis with a rubber seal. The screen lid locks into place with a sturdy latch system. Overall, this machine is very well-built and the build quality is top-notch. It doesn't feel cheap or flimsy, or fragile like some other laptops. I wouldn't feel so bad if I dropped this one as it would probably just scuff the plastic trim whereas with a MacBook or other "unibody" machine, you'd get a big ugly dent.

The OS is Windows 7 Pro 32-bit, which we chose because the RAM is only 4 GB. It will take up to 8 GB, and with only 4 this is still a smoking fast machine.

The 14" display is 1366x768 LED backlit LCD display with the anti glare coating, which for a machine in this price range is just mediocre. There are 2 USB SS 3.0 ports, a VGA, eSATA, mini HDMI, and ethernet ports. It includes a 8x super multi writer drive (DVD R+RW. CD-R R/W) that reads, writes, and re-writes CD's and single or dual layer DVD's. The internal hardware is what makes this machine so great. Inside is Intel's 4000 graphics chip, and one of the most powerful mobile CPU's on the market. The E6430s is configured with Intel's 3rd gen Core i7 3520m quad core CPU 2.9 GHz 4 MB cache, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM, Dell's 1520 802.11 g/n single band mini WiFi card, and the optional Dell Mobility 256 GB SATA 6 gb/s solid state drive (SSD) which was a $600 option and brought the price to this machine up to a hair under $2,100. I also tested this in the less-powerful i5 2.8 GHz CPU and standard hard drive and it's still extremely fast. It performs like a $2,000 laptop should.

The hardware makes this a smoking fast machine. From POST to Windows desktop is a hair under 8 seconds. Apps and large resource-hogging programs like iTunes and Photoshop didn't slow it down at all. Installing things like Windows service packs, updates Office with service packs was very fast. I'm an IT tech, and can honestly say this is the fastest machine I have ever worked on, and I've had my hands on some pretty impressive computers. It will do everything you ask it to and a lot more. It's not an ultra high end entertainment or gaming laptop like the XPS line or Alienware. It doesn't have a super high res screen, super thin chassis, or made of exotic materials. This is designed for a business user as a mobile workstation, and perfect for anyone who needs a fast, portable, rugged, no-nonsense machine with good battery life. I ran this computer without being plugged for over 2 hours and the battery gauge barely moved. I have no doubts this would last for 6 hours on a charge. Plus, it's easy to use. The keyboard isn't cramped and the palm rests are sufficiently large. Dell also doesn't ship their computers with loads of bloatware or unnecessary trial programs that expire, or are just annoying. You can tell that Dell designed this to be a mobile workstation. It also works with the port-replicator dock thanks to the connector port on the bottom, so you can mount extra USB devices, 2 monitors, or other devices when you want to use it like a desktop.

The 14" screen makes viewing documents easy, and is a lot nicer to work on than an ultra book or netbook. However, for a machine costing $2,100, I wished it was thinner, lighter, and had a better display. This is supposed to run with the MacBook Pro 13 and even 15, and I think it does a great job at it, but I think Dell could have done better. The i5 model of this is just as fast and it's about $300 cheaper (minus the SSD).

Pros:

Latest Intel i7 mobile CPU

Fast RAM

SSD

Lightweight

Fantastic build quality

Nice display

Good battery life

Dell quality

2 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI and eSATA

Able to connect to Dell's port replicator dock

Cons:

Display is just mediocre

Could be thinner and lighter

A little on the expensive side

I have no reservations recommending the Latitude 6430s. It's a no-frills, solid, well-built, and high performance business computer, but will be equally at home in your home as much as the office! Check out the new Latitude E6430 line before you shop elsewhere. They might be more expensive, but you do get what you pay for.

This was a big leap from my refined ultrabook lifestyle. I tried this out and was blown away by the performance. The battery lasted me, quite literally, all day and that was with me running a plethora of tabs and applications.

What I Love:

-Rugged Design, seems like it can withstand anything

-Built to last

-Perfect Size, easy to just pick up and go

-Price on Amazon is much lower then what I have seen at other places

-All the ports I could ever need

-i7 Processor doesn't disappoint

-Battery lasted me all day (approximately 9-10 hours of constant use)

-Screen has superb visibility inside and outside

What I don't Like:

-Over 6 pounds (I really don't mind, but others may)

Overall, 5/5 Stars

Buy Dell Latitude E6430 - 14" - Core i7 3520M - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit - 4 GB RAM - 500 GB HDD - Now

I have been a loyal Dell customer for over 15 years. The E6430 is about to change that. This laptop is the product of a cost cutting exercise. The screen is the main problem. At 1600x900 it's smaller than that of the E6410. The laptop lid size, however, remains the same. There's now a ridiculous strip of wasted space above the screen, the only purpose of which is to make it hard to open when used in an airplane. The screen contrast is abysmal and has a unpleasant "checked" quality to it. The E6410 has an excellent, sharp screen.

I will be returning mine.

I made my purchases directly through Dell.

I have been a loyal Dell customer since 1999.

Prior to the Latitude E Series Lap Top Dell really had a reputation for building a machine that could be a dependable work-horse.

I have purchased several E Series Latitude note books and I have to tell you. THESE MACHINES ARE POORLY MADE and WILL MALFUNCTION all the time.

I have spent 100's of hours on the phone with tech support with the E series note books. I have had technicians perform onsite service and I have had system replacement. None of this is convenient. It has cost me thousands in lost productivity.

I can't say it enough DO NOT BUY A DELL NOTE BOOK!! You will regret it.

A partial list of Issues that I have had -

1. Mother Board Replaced due to Wireless Malfunction;

2. Mother Board Replaced due to Overheating;

3. Mother Board Replaced due to Finger Print Reader Not Working;

4. Complete System Replacement;

5. Returning a machine to their repair depot only to get it sent back to me with a completely malfunctioning hard drive they made no attempt to notify me that the PC was not fixed; and

6. Complete Hard Drive Replacement.

PS. This is only one of several E Series note books that I use on a regular basis. They all have similar issues. Some of the issues are present right out of the box. Dell makes no effort to ensure that the system that you buy is configured the way you ordered it. Here is the kicker if you are willing to spend a day on the phone with them, they will walk you through the configuration that you bought and paid for when you purchased the machine. In other words, you get to work for Dell but don't get paid.

Samsung SF410-A01 14" White Notebook

Samsung SF410-A01 14' White NotebookI've had this laptop for over a year now and I still get compliments about how cool/pretty it looks. I like that its different cause when everyone pulls out their laptops for class or at the library, mine's different. in a good way. 14" is a great screen size for everyday use. The track pad is different but these are all things you get used to over time. Now when I use other track pads.. it bothers me that two fingers doesn't mean scroll. And I like that the pad doesn't have the right and left click buttons separate and sticking out from the body.

As of now.. the only downside I've had is that the hard drive and the battery are stuck together so you can't take out the battery..

But overall, LOVE this laptop. I would buy it again if I had to. :)

I've had this notebook for about 6 months and I do not like it. I bought it because it looked like an Apple, i.e., it was pretty. But, the keyboard does really weird things when I'm trying to type. It will suddenly put letters in previous words or will erase words for no reason. It is way too much trouble to use... almost as much trouble as trying to type on a phone.

HP Pavilion dv6-3120us 15.6-Inch Laptop PC - Up to 5.25 Hours of Battery LifeJust got the laptop. good price for all the features, expandable to 8g ram 2.6ghz dual core processor works great. has a cool little media quick launch button that starts up either hulu or netflix right away. the keyboard is a little off spacing wise but that could just be because im used to my toshiba that kicked the bucket. so far smooth. everyting started up great, streams movies to my tv though the hdmi. will let yall know if any problems arise. ohh a quick note that i think all the major laptop companies are changing their touch mouse thing. it takes a little getting used to but i didnt see much of any other option out there. there are no real buttons just one flat touch pad. i had to knock down the sensitivity on mine

I purchased this laptop in August 2010 and I am so so satisfied with this laptop. It is so efficient, fast, crisp, clear, and many functions....I love the media dock,it ables you to log in to your webcam see movies video. This laptop is the bomb! The web cam is so clear and the added function are cool. I would recomemend this laptop to anyone who is looking to get much much more for there money.

This laptop is a perfect computer for people who need a reliable everyday computer. This is definitely not for anyone looking to do any gaming.

One potential con: The keyboard has keys on the far left that boot up different programs. If you are not careful, you could boot up some of these programs, but it takes getting used to. After about a week of having this laptop, I've gotten used to the placement of the buttons, and I am having no problems with the keyboard.

Several pros:

Awesome built-in webcam with great features

Bluetooth technology (can hook up wireless printers and wireless headphones)

HDMI output --> Can hook up laptop to most modern-day TV's

Video and streaming quality is excellent.

The computer runs efficiently for having a dual-core processor!

I recently purchased this laptop off amazon & I am so glad I did !

Pros: Webcam has tons of fun features similiar to those of macs. It also allows you to webchat in dimly lit rooms. The computer itself runs very smoothly thanks to the processor & amount of memory. I really like the gadgets that you can add to the desktop, they have downloadable ones off their website too.

Cons: Keyboard takes some getting used too. I had a toshiba before and although ive had this laptop a week, Im still having trouble getting used to the keys. Also, I really wish the laptop was lit in the dark.

Overall a really great buy! Especially if you have a lot of music/videos/etc.

HP 15.6" Pavilion dv6-3025dx Entertainment 4GB Laptop 500GB Notebook PC

HP 15.6' Pavilion dv6-3025dx Entertainment 4GB Laptop 500GB Notebook PCI bought this laptop from best buy in early September of 2010. I would have given it 4 stars, but after only a month of use it quit working. I think the graphics card may have overheated. The system lights would come on but nothing showed up on the screen. Also it happened overnight when the laptop was on, but not in use.

Luckily hp fixed it free of charge and it is working great now. The ram, hd space, and processor are all really great and pretty fast for the price of this laptop. My only complaint is that the graphics card only has 128 mb of dedicated memory which is not great. Luckily the proccessor makes up for it and i can still play most new games on low settings. Older games work fine.

Also the track pad is a pain and not comfortable to use. you just have to push down a little bit to hard to click. Fingerprint scanner works great, and also the HDMI output is great to watch high def movies on a tv.

Overall its a good buy but if youre into gaming or other graphic applications get a laptop with less hd space, a slower processor, but a better graphics card.

I have had nothing but problems with this laptop. The hard drive crashed and I had a friend who replaced it for me. Now the battery is bad and needs replaced. That is with only occasional use and minimal downloading. I also bought my sister the same computer and hers doesn't even work anymore! Piece of junk and wish I had never bought it.

An Awesome laptop with possibly the WORST touchpad on the planet...I mean i haven't been able to type one whole sentence for 6 months now without having it get erased or minimized...It seems that the body of the computer senses palm heat and makes the pointer jump all over...Don't listen to the people that tell you that you can fix it through settings...because you can't...It's actually a two handed touchpad and I have forgotten the good old days of using one hand to navigate...I actually use two hands...one to navigate and one to push the left button...While writing this review I actually had to rewrite it twice and maximize google chrome 4 times...I swear it's as if the people that designed it weren't even thinking about testing while they were in development. ..Because if they did they wouldn't have put it on the market like this...Laptop speed and extras...A++++...

Laptop touchpad....A horrible F MINUS!!!

Lenovo ThinkPad X201i 3249MDU 12.1-Inch Laptop

Lenovo ThinkPad X201i 3249MDU 12.1-Inch LaptopI feel compelled to write a review about the best laptop I've ever owned. I opted to get the low-end X201i (as opposed to more expensive X201 models). For around $850 my machine came with Windows 7 Pro and a camera.

I'm a trial lawyer and depend upon laptops for spreadsheets, videos and document data bases. For the past ten years I've relied upon various Lenovo products, but lately been unable to find one small enough, cheap enough and fast enough. Until now.

The X201i is far superior than the netbooks I've been using, and helpfully smaller than Lenovo's other laptops I've been using.

The X201i, although perhaps not having the same sturdy feel as more expensive Lenovo laptops, is quite durable. It isn't all that stylish, and is a throwback to Lenovo laptops I used 8 years ago, but it does it all.

Mine came with the 9 cell battery, which is way more than enough for long cross-country flights. In fact, it replaces my netbook which I would carry around for hours for light reading and notes. It replaces my more robust and larger Lenovos used for database work.

Another reason why I vastly prefer this small notebook over the netbooks is the pointer stick which to me is the most efficient way of mousing around a laptop

As a programmer and a notebook buff, for me the X201 is pretty close to perfect as a primary portable machine. I've always had a thing for the Thinkpads of yore, and this iteration does not disappoint. The locking lid, no-nonsense industrial look, and matte finish make for classic perfection. In terms of build quality it seems lighter and more plastic than say the T40 but no less sturdy. There's hardly any flex in the chassis and I can lift the lid with just one hand. There's no denying it is *significantly* bigger than the 4:3 aspect X60, and the LCD bevel is a lot thicker, but on the upside the keyboard is fantastic! I would say it is more enjoyable than the MS ergo 4000 I use for work, though the left-hand palm rest is a bit limited, and I would recommend binding capslock to control as with any other laptop keyboard.

Even the X201i configuration with i3-370M and 2GB RAM manages anything I throw at it without flinching, including HD videos. What really impresses me is how cool and quiet it stays, even with the lid closed for hours while compiling something. In contrast my Lenovo S10 netbook gets extremely hot with the lid closed. I might up the RAM for something heavier though like the Android emu, and perhaps add an SSD later.

Software-wise, most people might be pleasantly surprised that it comes with Win 7 Pro. I am delighted that Ubuntu 10.10 works great on it, though it takes some tweaking to get the middle button scrolling with the trackpoint working.

Most might consider the display a downside -the viewing angle is narrow (which might not be a disadvantage for business users), and the contrast and color gamut are severely limited. Photo editing would be awkward on this display, and watching videos is only tolerable. Sound is meager but that's not such a disappointment.

As for ordering/shipping, NY to NY (from J&R) delivery done in a day via UPS and item came in excellent condition. It should be mentioned that the photos of the product both on the Amazon listing and on J&R are not of the actual product (clearly shown is an older X200) or the same configuration (this X201 config has a trackpad), which may bother some people. Also, to be clear, this configuration does not include a webcam, nor Bluetooth and 3G modules.

Great product received from J&R on 9/27; arrived safely in good factory packaging,

set up in minutes, and has run fine ever since.

Keyboard is excellent, with full-dimension keys and great tactile feedback.

Screen is very good also ; 12.1" seems perfectly acceptable (and I was using a

22" flat panel with my desktop.)

PROS Great keyboard, very good screen, good performance, compact, light (3 lbs.),

very portable, useful on-board trackpoint and general mouse behavior,

good-looking product

CONS Could have better integrated audio (not bad, though).

I needed a lightweight laptop for business and after a lot of research I ended up with this x201i. I couldn't be happier. The build is extremely solid, the weight is light, and the screen is great. The highlight is the keyboard, it is really so smooth and a pleasure to type on.

Pros:

i3 processor meets business needs (excel, access, powerpoint, etc...) with ease.

Great look, especially for those who want to avoid anything flashy (makes the Apple offering look like toys)

Keyboard is top quality

Love the option of touchpoint and tracking pad

No bloat software!

Cons:

2 GB ram

No webcam

$60 price drop a week after purchase (guess this only applies to me)

generally a nice little toy, light in weight, good for carrying around, cool look. like everything but a couple of issues:

the most bothersome problem is the display sometimes turns brighter by itself and pictures and everything look a bit weird. This will only go away after restarting the machine.

sometimes, it waits for seconds before responding to my key entries.

thought I am getting a 6-cell battery, but it's a 4-cell one I believe as it lasts only 4.5 hours. This is a parameter should be clearly specified for customers.

Asus G1Sn-X1 Refurbished Gaming Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83GHz, 4GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, DVDRW Lightscribe, 15.4' WXGA, Vista Home Premium 64 bitI have had this laptop for almost a year now, bought it July '08 over at Best Buy. It's a great laptop for several reasons. A big plus is the fact that there are two different buttons for powering on, one for 64-bit, and the other for 32-bit. 64-bit is a must, because it unlocks the full potential of 4GB memory, and being a gamer, it truly helps. The HDD is partitioned into two drives, one with the OS (149GB) and a clean partition (140GB). The e-SATA hookup is there physically, but not virtually. What I mean by that is that there is an e-SATA port, but there is not yet drivers for it. I called up Asus and they told me to uninstall/reinstall JMICRON drivers, all in vain. Another con is the processing power, would have liked to see this push 2.0GHz. The screen resolution is considerably lower than most laptops, but it does have Asus Splendid Utility, so there truly is a trade-off there.

All-in-all, considering this being nearly a year old with no visible or virtual wear and tear, I give this a rating of four stars. In the near future, I plan to swap HDD's, because this model makes it possible to do so.
