overall a good laptop, light and portable. comes with Win7 along with a copy of Win7. I would definately but another if i needed it. I am thinking about replacing the HDD though, since it is really small at only 80gb

I am not a gamer or anything, but this can hold it's own-just not the carzy latest games like Far Cry or Max Payne 3..but not many laptops in the price range do. I paid $600..I do play some 3d games, and the games I want to play work. If you go to Futuremark's website, and put in the spec for this computer, you shall see that this play 100% of the games at the MINIMUM settings at 71% at MAXIMUM settitngs! Not bad for $600! Plus, the backligh keyboard is nice and the fingerprint reader is handy for more security. It certainly is much quieter than my 7 year old Gateway which just didn't turn on. I cocluded it was a motherboard or power supply issue-and it was a hassle to get someone to troubleshoot. I figured I'd just buy a laptop-it's a great machine! Annd the once reviewer who gaave this 1 star based on lack of "restore" disks..well, that just being ignorant! Very few..except maybe old skoll Dells game w/ the system CDs. To base a review on that alone is LUDICRIOUS!!
1. Restore discs don't ship with computers any more...they just don't. It's not hard to make the restore discs yourself. DO IT IMMEDIATELY.
2. If you don't know how, pay someone.
3. No idea what virus program you would have to load as soon as you un-box this laptop, considering it ships installed with Windows Defender active on start up. I don't even know where to begin on the comment that the aforementioned anti virus ruined the OS. What the hell did you install, dude?
4. Don't 1 star a laptop that bricked from user error.
Now, I've had this laptop for a few weeks now and I love it. The Trinity A-10 4600M processor with discrete class gpu is powerful enough to compete with an i-5 running an Intel hd integrated gpu. I just installed a crucial m4 256gb SSD and upgraded the ram to 16gb, did a clean install of Win8 and this baby screams.

This isn't JUST HP, but we can start with them. So they ship you this computer, but withhold the 3 OS and Restore discs that would cost a $1 during manufacturing to package with the computer. Then they want $16 for the discs, postage, and handling later; except most people don't know they need them until their machine is in a bad way. So then when you need them the most, your waiting for delivery. So by "saving the planet" they are wasting more fuel, packaging, and time by SELLING to you what is already yours. Sure, on some machines you can burn your own, but when you get a new machine, with new antivirus that says "load immediately" which then crashes the OS prior to building one system restore point and your machine is toast, then what?Want HP - ENVY 15.6" Laptop - 6GB Memory - 750GB Hard Drive - Natural Silver Discount?

Very massive and good Ultrabook, with a bigger mSata SSD for the system it is very fast, the only weakness is the poor LCD Screen quality.

The product came new, in the original manufacturer's sealed packaging. Delivery took only a few days, on the early side of the estimated time for delivery. As for the product, it looks and works great so far. I have had no problems running Skyrim, which has very high requirements, on ultra hi-res settings for the last couple of weeks. Overall a great buyer experience, and a product worth considering for anyone thinking about purchasing a gaming laptop.

Acer does not fail when it comes to laptops. This thing is amazing/fast/beautiful/Just all around great. I have had this laptop for 3 months, and so far i have completely fallen in love with this laptop. The battery life is around 4 hours browsing time, which is pretty good. I would recommend when buying, getting another 4gb ram stick for faster performance on everything (Gaming, browsing, video watching, ect.)

I have to say this device is pretty amazing... It runs photoshop, the full office suite, and my developer environments (mainly visual studio 2012) with no issues at all.Its so fast you really don't know its a tablet, the screen and build is just great.. sure, if you are going to use it for a desktop replacement you might want to spring for a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse they are totally usable but a little cramped for heavy use.
p.s. the battery, given the power of this device is really not bad at all its just lasted 4 hours on my lap, developing in one window, while watching a video in another.. all while I sit in bed !

It's so light and fell in love immediately. You pull up on the back of the screen and it pops up into laptop mode. It's really cool. Folks keep coming by just to see it pop open then slide closed. (oooh do it again!)
It's hard to believe that you get a full on Win8 PC in such a tiny package.
Pros:
Light weight + very cool styling
Solid feel: the sliding hinge may raise some eyebrows when you first look at it but I have to say after using it for some time it's rock solid.
The touch screen is stunning at 1080p(IPS). The Win8 tiles are also a breeze to scroll through.
It's really powerful. Much better than my work PC.
Cons:
So why 1 star off? Quite simply, the keyboard is too small to use for every day productivity. If I hooked it up to an external monitor/keyboard everytime I needed to do work it'd be absolutely fine. (can't always do that when traveling)
Conclusion: The title says it allFirst of all, I'd like to highlight the quality of service of the supplier. The product was shipped even before the predicted time and was delivered three weeks before the predicted arrival time. In addition to that, it was well wrapped-up. So, great supplier.
The product is amazing: material quality, resolution, weight, and size. You don't compare this product to tablets like iPad, it is way advanced. It is a powerful machine that you can use to develop and do thing within this line. At the same time, you can use it as a normal regular tablet to surf the net.
It comes with a stylus (a pen). A sensitive stylus that would detect the pressure.
You need to get use to the keyboard.
other than that the product is amazing!Very fast and efficient. Only limitation is the windows mail. Otherwise smokin' fast. This is my 3rd SSD hard drive laptop and it is as fast if not faster than the mac book air and pro.I love this computer... it is fast and handy, easy to use, has large capacity and looks really clean and attractive. The touch screen is sensitive, the computer is very fast and responsive.
Now for the cons...
It is not a desktop. I tried using it as a desktop by attaching it to a large touch screen monitor (Acer 27") d using it to multitask. Though it has a i7 core processor and 8 GB of ram it bottlenecks when multitasking. I had to disable so many SONY background programs to get it t run smoothly. If you are into multitasking I.E. watching videos while surfing Youtube, doing research, converting files, playing games it slows down. Also it is not very good at heavy duty PC games. I tried playing Farcry 3 on it , I had to play in medium mode and it still lagged sometimes, Tomb Raider had lags and rendering gaps.
Battery life is not very good, I even bought the "sheet" and I feel it still did not last as long.
Other than that this computer is great. if you really need more details ask.
Asus U46E-BAL5 Refurbished Notebook PC
I've had this computer for 13 months. It was working perfectly fine until I woke up one morning and the screen was black. Brought it into Best Buy Geek Squad to get it fixed. Two weeks later I found out that the computer wasn't able to be fixed. I bought this computer brand new for $1100 with all the added features of virus protection, software, and warranty. What a waste of money. I've heard that other people with ASUS have had issues with hard drives and black screens (just google it), but I saw the awesome specs of the computer and didn't pay attention to the negative reviews. Absolute waste of money. I will never purchase an ASUS computer again.Also, as a side note, the speakers on the computer are terrible. They are only on the right side of the computer, UNDERNEATH the laptop. I had to either tilt the laptop so I could hear anything, or resort back to headphones. Worth the $$? I think not.

I bought this Asus computer with the belief that I was getting a steal due to the low cost of $529 while the computer had 8GB of RAM and 750GB of storage while most computers for that price have only 4 GB RAM and 500GB storage. The 3 good parts about this computer are that 1) the price is cheap, 2)it is fast and 3) it has more storage than I would ever care to use. The bad parts are fourfold: 1) the size of the font is constantly changing meaning that sometimes the print is too small to read and yet other times the print is so large, that I need to constantly scroll to read an entire line; 2)the page constantly moves up and down even when I'm scrolling in the opposite direction-the page jumps and one never knows when or in which direction; 3)the audio is atrocious. There are several videos where I can't hear a thing. Other times, I simply turn off any back round noise and put my ear to the audio. The other problem with the audio is that there is only one speaker and the speaker is beneath the key board and thus is always covered. If you plan to listen to videos, this is not the computer for you; 4)Similar to many lenovo computers, the keyboard doesn't have rounded edges so that when one is using the scroll button or mouse pad, ones palms will be rubbing against the non-rounded edges and cause some sever lingering pain. Overall, the great speed and storage vs the major annoyances make me give this computer a rating of FAIR. Even for the great price, I was quite disappointed.
ASUS Laptop Computer / 14-inch Display Screen / Intel Pentium B980 Dual-core Processor / 4GB DDR3 R
I bought this for Black Friday at Best Buy for $250, and it's the best $250 laptop I've ever seen. Build quality is very good. Yes, it's plastic, but it's solid, and not cheap feeling at all. The screen is decent, nothing special. The keyboard is almost as good as an Apple Macbook Pro. It has good response and good feedback. The trackpad is pretty good, and doesn't stray too much from what I expect.As for power, it's plenty good for almost everything you'll do. 4GB of RAM and a Pentium B980 (Sandy Bridge) at 2.4 GHz is good for almost anything except 3D gaming. Fruit Ninja and Cut the Rope work fine on this thing, as do all business apps. It comes with Windows 8, and can be upgraded to Pro for $60, but you only need to do that if you're joining a Domain at work.
The downside for this laptop, and the 1 star ding, is it's a PAIN to upgrade. You basically have to snap off the keyboard and trackpad to get to the hard drive, and you have to remove the logic board to change the RAM. I changed the hard drive out for a SSD and that's it. That made my fresh boot time just under 10 seconds, and now I have a computer that really screams.
Some tips I discovered as I experimented with OS Installs:
1. You don't need a product key for a fresh install of Windows 8 64-bit. Get a Windows 8 64-bit ISO (easily obtained) and just install it. If you use a USB drive for installation, make sure to format the USB drive in FAT32, not NTFS for UEFI compatibility. Or, use an external DVD drive. The product key is embedded in the UEFI firmware, and Windows 8 automatically detects it and activates without any user interaction.
2. If you want to Install Windows 7, you need to enable "CSM" in the UEFI BIOS screen. Press ESC before the Asus logo comes on when you power on, and go in to the setup. Then, under "Boot" enable "Launch CSM". This turns on BIOS compatibility for Windows 7 and Linux. After a reboot, press ESC again before the Asus logo and you can choose CD and USB boots without UEFI.
3. Drivers are available at support.asus.com for Win 7 (32 and 64) and Win 8 (64).

No windows 8 proI purchased this laptop from BestBuy for 250$ on Black Friday. I did my research before i bought a new PC, I've upgraded 1 laptops and built 2 desktops. My old laptop is just outdated. Not saying i know everything about PC's but i know enough to get in trouble. This is a laptop people. One that is meant for web surfing and mobility. Its less then 400$ brand new and that's not even a bad price. Factory with 4G RAM and a 2.4GHz proc. not bad for a cheap laptop. You can upgrade your hard drive and memory. Newegg has sticks of RAM(4G) for under 20$ My battery is lasting about 4.5 hours. If you want a CD drive, buy an external. If you want a really nice slick feeling PC that doesn't feel cheap, don't buy a cheap laptop, spend 1000$ That being said you are getting a steal with this computer. It works fine as is, if you want to upgrade($50-$100) this PC would compare with a $800-$900 PC. I'm new to Win 8 but everything that has to do with the OS has nothing to do with the computer.
I use this laptop for web surfing while sitting around and the HDMI a lot to watch movies on my TV.
And the laptop doesn't feel that cheap.I got this from Amazon for $350 (didn't know about the Black Friday deal at Best Buy, darn!), and I'm giving it five stars because I didn't know that a $350 laptop would be so nice...If I'd known I could get so much for this price, I wouldn't have ever spent over $1000 for a laptop!
This laptop is as fast as you would expect, and I love the pink color. It's pretty lightweight and portable, but the keyboard feels REALLY nice. I had a nearly-new $800 Toshiba Portege before this until it met an untimely end at the hands of a cup of coffee, and I have to say I'm enjoying this Asus more, and not just because it's cotton candy-pink! The keyboard on my Toshiba felt so cramped: with this Asus, you're getting a reasonably thin and light computer that also provides a very nice typing experience. It doesn't feel cheap or plasticy to me, and even if it did the weight/comfort/price ratio is right on.
I originally gave this laptop five stars, but after using it for another week I knocked it down to four because of the touch pad, which isn't as responsive as I would like. It's not that bad, and I usually use a USB mouse anyway, but it is a bit annoying. Still, it's a small thing to complain about on an otherwise really cheap and nice laptop.I just purchased this laptop last week at Best Buy (for $199) and it's been perfect for my everyday computing. I bought it because I wanted a quality lightweight laptop for school. It has excellent battery life and starts up quickly. (Despite the picture, the matte lime green color is actually very nice.) Windows 8 is great and the apps are a lot of fun. I like how with Windows 8 my phone calender syncs to my laptop. Also, Netflix works perfectly and battery life lasts for hours while watching TV shows, and picture quality is great!
Additionally, the HDMI input is helpful if you want to hook up the laptop to the TV and stream Amazon instant movies and rentals to your larger television!
The only downside that I have found so far is that whenever my computer sleeps for a while or restarts, I keep having to troubleshoot the Wi-Fi adapter. It only takes a minute, but it's annoying. Otherwise, I would have given this laptop 5 stars! I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend this ASUS laptop to my friends and family for standard everyday computing and entertainment.
UPDATE--
After using this laptop for two weeks (college student), I've noticed 2 issues. The first one is that the computer is just very slow at saving and loading some programs, and sometimes online as well. The second issue is the most annoying the keypad is messed up. The space bar doesn't make spaces at least 1/3 of the time, and the keypad (or mouse pad) is jittery and constantly flashes the control options sidebar for Windows 8 even with slight movements on the keypad. It's really annoying. There is certainly a problem with the manufacturing of this computer. Especially the keypad. If I didn't pay only $199 for it at Best Buy, I would take it back for sure.

I like most things about the laptop. The aluminum case seems to stay cool even after long use. The laptop came with Windows 7, which is what I wanted. (Windows 8 needs to be dumped by Microsoft ASAP!) The 3.0 USB port is very fast. It seems like I move files back and forth between the hard drive and a flash drive almost instantly. The screen is very readable. The computer came with enough RAM (4 gb) to suit my needs and a large enough hard drive. The I3 dual-core processor is way faster than my other laptop.I do not like the placement of the "mouse" pointing device -it is off-center to the left, so I constantly click the right rather than the left button. I also have trouble with gestures, which I should just turn off in order to make the pad act more like a traditional mouse. I wish that the keyboard had a numeric keypad separated from the regular keyboard.
But overall, this was an inexpensive good choice for my needs.

This is great laptop. Finally great price and performance point that can fully replace home desktop. It even runs basic games with no problems. So far I played Half Life 2, Need for Speed World, Team Fortress 2, portal 2, all with high settings at 1600x900 and no problems whatsoever. On Grand theft Auto IV it started to choke a bit and I had to reduce quality settings to get good frame-rates.Overall great machine that will be more powerful than most people would need for a long time, unless you want to play latest and greatest games, then you got to spend a bit more.
The laptop broke after 1 1/2 years, so no luck with the warranty. First it's the BSOD upon booting into Windows. Tried various ways to recover but couldn't. From what I've seen online, it looks like a hardware error (something to do with PNP).
Left the broken laptop alone for a while (didn't know what to do with it), and today when I turn it on, the screen is dead. Nothing even appears on screen.
It's going to some E-waste facility now.Screen is bright. Processing is fast. Enough memory to run even the most memory hog application. Could not beat the price either. One hint Buy an extended warranty. The limited warranty with Toshiba sucks. I am able to multitask quite well and have several windows open and applications running. You might want to uninstall some of the bloatware but so far it hasn't been a problem for me.I purchased this for around $459 at the local Staples. It looks great, but for a quad core, not as speedy as I had thought. Windows 7 Score 5.6, not so great as the drive is slow. The problem with mine was the date advanced about 1 minute for every 1 minute is was asleep or shut down. I contacted Toshiba Support and was told it was a problem with this model and there was not a fix yet (two weeks ago, but the problem was reported about mid-July 2011). The case is cheap, but okay. The touchpad doesn't respond as well as my Sony laptop, or many of the Dell laptops I have used. The touchpad is bad, so I had to purchase a mouse! Because of the time (and date if it's shut off or asleep long enough) is a problem that I would never recommend anyone to purchase this model. My antivirus is always out of date unless I fix the time/date manually each time I boot up or awake it. My emails don't have the right time, so if something is time sensative, I have to make sure I have manually reset the time/date. I would have sent mine back, but it's past the date on that (Staples).
So the abridged version: It's a cheap laptop with a definite "lemon" problem that currently there is no fix for. I would not recommend this product.Bought this laptop last week, so far so good. It was a display model at Staples, so got a good deal (I hope). The only thing I immediately noticed with this laptop is the battery life (according to the specs at the store) is WAY off. Five hours? Ummm, sorry Charlie. Try 2.5 hours and that's after fully charging it overnight. :(
Aside from that, hell it runs. I love the screen. I'm older, my eyesight is shot and this wide screen is very, very easy on my tired eyes.
Also, I'm a die-hard fan of AMD, never liked Intel processors, so I'm glad this in an AMD. As for "what it clocks out at" -who cares. It runs, it boots, it boots programs fairly quickly, I don't need greased lightning, I'm not a gamer.
I have noticed that when you pop a DVD in to watch, there's no audio coming out of the speakers. Wot up with that? Yet when I visit, say YouTube, it has audio for videos no problem. So the audio isn't booming bass, that's okay, just happy it has audio.
Prior to this, every laptop I've ever owned has been an antique that belonged in a museum, so this is a big improvement.
I don't like the fact there's no emergency re-install/wipe CD or DVD with Windows 7 included. Apparently there's some work around with a auto-partitioned drive, I'm encouraged to back it up on Toshiba's site ... whatever. If you're okay with loading all your HDD info on some site, be my guest. I'm old school. Everything gets backed up on zip/thumb drives and I have a RAID on my desktop.
* * * * *Another reviewer of a similar Toshiba model recommended killing off several of the "bloat" programs on here -unnecessary software that gets stuffed on these laptops at the factory. Somebody please advise me which programs I should uninstall??? I've already killed a few but not sure what else??? * * * * *

This dell computer is truly amazing! After having a terrible experience with laptops (bought two acers, both broke within 6 months and acer didn't even bother helping me) this laptop gave me hope. The RAM is just right with 4gb and a 2.30 gh processor this machine is so fast. Its been working great for me, and is good for traveling. I am a DJ and use my laptop for music and it worked great at my first gig a couple weeks ago. I also use it for my personal use and I like my computers super fast. This is perfect. Also Dell is a great company with excellent support. I would recommend this computer to anyone weather it be for personal or business use. Also never buy from Acer I amazed that their even allowed to stay in business with the crap they sell.P.S. I didn't buy my Dell at amazon I bought it at BestBuy.

I bought this laptop with hopes it would suit my small business needs when I travel.Let's talk about the pro's first.
Pro's:
Keyboard is nice, has the numberpad and fingerprint scanner which I liked
The computer is very fast, with the i7 3632QM processor it never felt like it was trying, everything responded very quickly
Con's:
There are lots of con's I don't know where to begin.
On first start-up fresh out of the box, it crashed. I restarted the computer and tried installing updates and then it crashed again, upon start-up.
I contacted my seller Laptop Authority' and they walked me through how to fix this issue using a special software update from Microsoft. Once updated with this 'special' update the computer crashed less, I guess that was a good thing?
Anyway, the computer was unreliable when it came to overall system stability. I never knew when it was going to crash next.
It would always freeze when it went to sleep so I had to put my sleep mode to 'never' and just pray I had battery life while working.
It had problems connecting to the internet all the time, some places I go it would connect right away, other places that had WiFi (work offices) everyone else had their connection but mine would stay unconnected 90% of the time as it dipped in and out of connectivity, this was by far the most frustrating thing for me to handle. I had 3 IT personnel look at this issue and they were all baffled.
It was not a hardware issue because it would connect for a few seconds at a time, if it was hardware it would not connect at all.
The mouse trackpad was a pain in the butt, it was overly sensitive and difficult to use because it was like an on/off switch.
The sound quality wasn't the best, since I am on a Lenovo hating rampage right now I will add that little tidbit of disappointment.
I spent hours trying to diagnose all these little problems and in the end I was fed up and just returned it.
Laptop Authority was responsive to me and sympathetic for my frustration and I was issued a full refund in a timely manner, although I did have to pay shipping back to the supplier.
Overall, this computer left a sour taste in my mouth and I don't plan on going with Lenovo in the future.

My daughter is preparing for high school and she wants to attend a school dedicated to communications and graphic arts. As such, I needed to purchase a laptop well-suited for her needs and one that would last 4 1/2 years until she goes to college.I originally settled on a Sony at Best Buy on sale for $599 but I did not pull the trigger before it went up in price to $629. Although $599 was a very good price for a laptop that sells for $700 almost everywhere else, I'm glad I didn't. That Sony had the 2nd generation Core i5 processor, which I thought was the sweet spot between exceptional performance and price.
As I did more research, I discovered that the AMD Vision A8 processor was vastly superior to not only the Intel Core i5 but also the Core i7 on graphics tasks. Yes, both of the Intels beat the AMD A8 on basic computational tasks in the various tests but in reality any of these processors are quite fast in the real world and unlikely to be noticeably different. I decided that the graphics capability was going to be more noticeable.
I got lucky and found this model HP at OfficeDepot for $499 after $50 rebate compared to a "retail" price of $699. It was $130 cheaper than the Sony and identical on everything except the processors and for my daughter's application this processor is better. Plus, this one has the USB 3.0 standard and the fingerprint scanner.
I would never recommend paying $700 $800 for this laptop but if you are opportunistic and can find a laptop powered with an AMD A8 processor and a 15" 16" screen for $500 $550 then scoop it up! It will give you 3 5 years of capability.

I did online research lot before buying this. You will find very few good 14" laptops in this price range and also very steep increase in price as one move from 15" to 14" with same configuration. Of course one can get better configuration with 15 inches in this price range. But I didn't liked bulky 15 inches laptops much with my previous experiences. I wanted something smaller. I got this delivered with perfect condition. It works marvelously and flawlessly. Bright screen. Flawlessly fast. I like the look of it. Just the one I wanted. It is so light and slick. Battery lasts longer. Had not much problems since I bought it 8 months before. The only small problem I faced till now is that time to time internet connectivity fails. But may be this is because of my router itself. But overall I am very much satisfied with the product.This is one of the best 14 inch laptops in market in this price range!

Overall this is a pretty good laptop. There are a few things to consider.First it isn't a touch screen. It is a classic stylus centered tablet. This may be what you are looking for but is worth noting. The processor works fine, the battery life is as advertised (even after 2 years it is acceptable). I have had no major issues. I have grown accustomed to no DVD drives and don't mind at all.
Now to the Pros and Cons:
Pros:
The swivel is really useful and efficient. Occasionally it doesn't get the screen switched right, but the button on the front allows you to correct this.
Lenovo Support is great. Overall I was impressed with how easy and efficient they were. I even got direct lines to staff while troubleshooting.
Ram runs quickly and efficiently. I have had no issues when rendering or even when gaming with mid end games.
Thinkvantage Recovery works really well.
Quiet, but is a little hot under heavy loads.
Cons: Upgrade or replace the Hard Drive. It isn't big enough.
Some of the software/bloatware is annoying
The creation of recovery media without a DVD drive is problematic.
While thinkvantage works well it sucks to lose drive space even if it is only 10GB.
Price it is too expensive for what you get. It is a study long lasting business oriented device. But business shouldn't just mean pricier, which it does in this instance.

I got this laptop after doing extensive research on the cheapest highest quality option about 4 days ago and have been using it for web browsing, blu-ray watching, and gaming. There is almost nothing wrong with this laptop. It pretty much has the top specs in every category with its ivy bridge core i7 processor, Nvidia Geforce GT 650M, 676 gb hard drive space, 8gb DDR3 RAM, etc...Pros:
Along with all the hardware, hp threw in a backlit keyboard, an HD screen(1920X1080), and yes a fingerprint scanner(to open different webpages and programs and automatically enter passwords for you).
The laptop is very quiet even when carrying out tasks that require quite a lot of power.
The Amazing specifications that come with the laptop as aforementioned.
The audio can be made much louder than I am used to with laptops if made to do so but one can just as easily have it very quiet.

The Audio isn't bad but not the best I've heard.
The laptop can also get quite hot on the underside while playing graphics intensive games (still runs extremely smoothly with games like Starcraft II, Diablo III, and Skyrim at near max settings).
The material used for the keys and touchpad are such that when looked at from an angle so the light bounces off differently, one can see residue left behind from the hands. I usually wash my hands before using the laptop but the residue is still there. I suppose one could wipe the keys and touchpad off but this can get annoying.
The laptop also apparently comes with two GPUs, one being Nvidia Geforce GT 650M and the other which is used for non-graphics intensive processes being the Intel HD Graphics 4000 probably to save power.
I haven't tested the battery life but HP's website claims that it is six hours. One of the reviews on HP's website says that while web browsing and playing music that laptop lasted 3.25 hours (does not mention if the laptop was on full brightness which is very bright).
I would suggest getting the laptop through HP and getting the deal that includes a free Xbox 360 which you can sell to decrease the price by about $150.
No other complaints at all. All around solid.

Pros:

Very neat, stylish and comfortable design. Matte finish and Matte Display, I am loving it. Now I don't need to worry about fingerprints sticking on it.
Top of the line specs.
Pretty light for such high end hardware.
Keyboard back-light and numeric keypad. Not to forget the pleasant typing experience.
Amazing battery life. I get 4.5 5 hrs of battery doing generic tasks like Music, web browsing and work. For such a hefty configuration, it is pretty commendable. HP should pat itself on the back for this. This I get with moderate settings, I believe it can definitely make the 6 hr mark if I turn the settings all the way down for only basic operations.
Full HD display that has good viewing angles and good color reproduction. The matte screen is the icing on the cake. I don't have to worry about reflections bouncing back.
Switchable graphics. Although not manually enabled, the OS is smart enough to switch to the graphics card when a graphics intensive application is launched. I believe this is one of the major factors contributing to the excellent battery life. When doing general tasks, the OS sticks to the Integrated Intel Graphics 4000, which is awesome as well.
Stays very cool, fast and snappy performance.
Cons:
No option to reduce the intensity of keyboard back-light. It sometimes looks as if it is bleeding light.
Unwanted HP bloatware. I really think HP should provide to users an option to check / uncheck the software to pre-install while checking out.
Lastly, but most importantly, I have not heard about a discounted upgrade to Windows 8 when it comes out. I would prefer to have the option. HP, are you listening?
Have not tested any games and I don't think I will be doing any heavy gaming as well. I have my PS3 for that. But going by other reviews, I think gaming performance should be pretty good.
Actually I would have rated this 5 stars if not for the bloatware and missing Windows 8 upgrade. Now, I will need to look somewhere else for Windows 8. I think I will come back and add the final star if HP can offer me an option to upgrade to Windows 8 at a discounted price.

I purchased this laptop 2 months ago and it has been great. THe upgraded screen is clear and bright. The system is fast-even without a SSD it boots in about 30 seconds( I have 1 TB HDD w 32 gb accel.) I can watch multiple videos and run the antivirus at the same time without any slowdown(not a power user.) I don't think it has crashed once and I use it every day. Battery life is good for such a powerful laptop at 4-5 hours depending on settingsMy only complaint is with the track pad. It has a nice feel and works well most of the time. However, the 2 finger scroll is a little erratic. Particularly while web pages are still loading, it won't register, then jumps way down. A little patience solves the problem. The pinch to zoom is too sensitive. Maybe it is adjustable but I don't know how. If I get it close, then just rock my finger, I can get the perfect size, eventually. My girlfriend's Macbook has a better trackpad, but that is the only thing I like better.

I was looking to purchase a laptop for my possible return to grad school with online degrees all the rage. I was unsure of what type to get since my last laptop purchase in 2000. I was also aware that any laptop I purchased would become obsolete by the time it was delivered to me. So I wanted one that was as current as possible, and had enough memory to suit my needs. I wanted one that was multi-purpose, for school, entertaiment, and possibly an online business or the ability to work from home. Also due to my form of MS I'm currently unable to 'shop around' and 'test drive' various makes & models. In essence, 'buying blind' relying only on recommendations from friends and reading reviews. So, when I read the August 2012 Consumer Reports Lab Test of laptops and this model was ranked #2 and 'Recommended' I immediately went to Amazon. It had a 5 star rating with only five reviewers (1 reviewer gave it 4 stars). So I decided to go for it. I've only had it for just over a month. But so far I'm pleased with my purchase. I ordered it in the middle of the night on 9/3 and it was delivered just before 2pm on 9/5. It is extremely quiet compared to my old Gateway laptop from years ago. It starts up and shuts down quickly. The keystrokes are smooth and very quiet. Haven't seen the backlit keyboard feature yet. But I have typed in the dark and the keys were still easy to see. The camera function is great. It has a lot of features that you can use to enhance your photos and videos. The blu-ray/dvd/cd player is very good. I've played blu-rays, dvds, and cds on it and it has features to enhance your viewing and/or listening pleasure. I haven't burned a cd yet, so I can't speak on that feature. Battery power is about 6 hours, but i was watching a couple of blu-rays mostly. So it could be more or less depending on what your doing. WiFi access is pretty good considering the signal is not that strong in the heathcare facility I'm currently in. Can't comment on the technical stuff cause I'm not a computer geek. This came close to being a 5 star purchase. It's a fast quad core system with 8G of memory, bought here for $999. The graphics are not top notch (and that drags the Windows Experience Index down to 5.4), but for my purposes it's fine. I needed 4 fast cores, and this delivers.The keyboard, though, is frustrating beyond belief. It's about full size, and the touch is ok, but some genius at HP decided on three massive blunders:
1) the up and down arrow keys are half size, and difficult to hit, unless perhaps you're a six year old girl with unusually small hands. I'm an adult male with large hands.
2) The function keys, F1 through F12, are a mainstay in many, many software applications. F5 is the "do it" key in a wealth of software refresh in most browsers, compile and run in many IDEs. F3 is "search again" in many tools. F1 is often Help. I use them all the time.
For some reason, HP decided to make those keys half-height, and do double duty. If you want F3, you have to type Function-F3. The F3 key, by itself, brightens the display. I have no idea why the manufacturer thought that brightening the display was a more common operation than searching for something; I only know that after fifteen years of using function keys as the quick way to get work done, I don't like having them buried under a bunch of keys to adjust brightness and volume.
3) The insert key has been given the same treatment as the F keys. The key combination for Insert is Function-PrintScreen. And it's also half-height. As someone who for years has used control-insert, shift-insert and shift-delete to move text around, it's unusable. I'm forcing my fingers to learn control-C, V and X instead, and I don't like it.
For a laptop that's clearly aimed at power users you don't need 4 cores and 8G of memory for most users the decision to cripple power user shortcuts is a very odd one. The simple solution is to plug in a USB keyboard with a key layout that you like, but that's not a great solution for a portable laptop.
Otherwise a fine machine. Not much bloatware, over 600G of disk free when you get it, adequate USB, decent screen.

This is a pricy computer already, now I have to spend more to get adaptors.
I wish it was still available in black or you could opt for the non-glaze display.

Reasons for my Decision With this update to the 13-inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry-notebook impressive numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo is the same processor found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro (it has 160GB only).
Yes, considering the larger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook actually gives you a higher specification computer in some regards than the $200 more expensive MacBook Pro 13-inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody provides strength, and I must say this notebook is very solid. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a long-life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. In terms of performance, my mother reported to me simple usage of nearly six hours on a charge. Impressive. Blows away my older Mac notebook's battery.
Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro would offer, but my mother would likely not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces very carefully as it will show light scratches easily.
The bottom of the MacBook is a bit strange. It is a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I'm not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I would recommend wiping off whatever surface you are going to sit the computer on, to remove light dust, if you worry about the computer's appearance.
Overall, I was looking to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I didn't want to compromise performance, and I feel I didn't despite choosing this entry-level MacBook. Truly, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only slightly faster. These computers are getting faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.
The price to value of this MacBook is remarkable. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a larger hard drive. You can't argue with that. I didn't, and the MacBook has impressed.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I've been through 3 PC laptops in 4 years and only one of those didn't have fatal hardware failures or viruses. I used Mac's briefly in 99' and didn't understand them at all and have shunned them ever since. Finally after my last laptops motherboard started failing I decided it was time to take the leap to a Mac. The main reason I did this was because I've heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple products. I waited for the new models to come out first before I got one because I have a habit of always wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I'm used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough getting used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I've had it for almost a 2 1/2 weeks now and so far I couldn't be happier. There are very few flaws that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too "sharp" and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher would yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about getting the Macbook pro but could not justify spending more money and getting the same/lower specs (i.e. 160gb hard-drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery). I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I don't type in the dark so I can do without the backlight keyboard. This is my 4th Apple laptop (PB150, White iBook, MacBookPro Alumnium). All personally owned. I've also been a user of many PC laptops for work. Our last 2 Mac Laptops have been our sole home computer when we've owned them. Getting probably 6 hours of daily average use.I have to say that this new unibody MacBook is by far, my favorite laptop I've ever owned and used.
We've been using it for a month now with the same rate of usage. Maybe more because of the holidays.
It has some slight imperfections.
1. I wish it still had composite TV out, but when I become the last person on earth to finally upgrade to HDTV, it will be ready (3rd party HDMI/video out cables are cheap).
2. The edge of where your arms go needs to be rounded because it slightly slices into your wrists. (I haven't filed it down yet, but will...)
3. And sure, target mode in firewire would be nice. But, it's rarely needed ($15 for a shell and a disassembly gets you to the harddrive in the disasterous event your system is so fried you can't get a network hookup going).
4. An SD slot would be nice too. But, everything I have a card in is USB anyway, and I already have card readers for when I don't (or my devices connect directly anyway).
5. It's more expensive than Windows laptops. But, at under $1000 ($850 if you're smart with rebates and deals) the MacBook makes buying a Mac almost equivalent to a nicer Windows laptop. Almost. Well, it's at least not embarrassing to admit anymore.
But, that's it with the negatives.
It's slim and sleek. The unibody means no flex when I hold the corner with one hand (RIP 2.5 year old G3 iBook with graphic chip recall). The plastic means no permanent deformation when I drop it from 4 feet (RIP 2.5 year old MacBookPro with a slow overheating death near the corner I dropped it on.) The battery life is impressive. (RIP every PC laptop I've ever used within 6 months.)
The white keys mean keyboard lighting is not such a big deal. The glossy screen is not really that glossy. The screen is bright and sparkly. The processor is speedy. (I run Windows on it just fine.)
The 250 gig HD is big enough (I'd need a few terrabytes to hold all my media anyway.) 250G is enough to simply expose the low end MacBook Pro for what it is Apple's cynical attempt to milk money out of folks.
The mousepad is just wonderful. Takes a day or two to get used to not having a "button", but it's simply wonderful after that. Two fingers for a right mouse click and for scrolling. I zoom in and out of dual browsing sessions with the pinch like I never expected to do. And it's CENTERED in front of the screen. I don't know what Windows design idiots decided to stop centering their mousepads and keyboards and to give them tiny recessed buttons, but I refuse to personally purchase a lopsided laptop where you have to flop 4 inches off one leg just to type and where your thumb is rigidly fixed to an ergonmically challened button. The keyboard is equally well designed and easy on the fingers for this touch typist.
And, 2 of my Apple pet peeves have been fixed: the latchless lid is perfectly designed, and, there's no feet to get rubbed off the bottom anymore.
Oh, and it's light. Not MacBook Air light. But, surprisingly light and thin. I carry a 17" Windows machine for work. Yet, the 13" screen rarely feels restrictive. And, its performance blows away the MacBook Air. Try running full screen video off of YouTube on a MacBook Air. It can't do it. This MacBook has the juice to display without stuttering.
Plus, importing the old data from my old MacBookPro was seamless. Import and done. Just a few apps that needed to be upgraded for 64 bit and Snow Leopard. No crap on the desktop to remove like a new Windows computer. No annoying security messages. No virus worries. Basically, ZERO "Windows" worries. (Yes, I've got XP running on VM ware fusion and Vista on Boot Camp for certain games. So, I know of what I speak... Yes, I'm a masochist.)
And finally, it's MacOSX. I'm the kind of guy that has people coming to me for tech help at work, asking for recommendations "for a new PC cause their old one has a virus". They need help reinstalling windows. They have driver issues. They have reps from foreign countries advising to "recover" their systems (which means wiping the entire Harddrive). They have trojans running wild. They are always confused and frustrated. The only ones who don't have problems are the ones who are too scared to do anything with their computers. Or, who are technically savvy enough to navigate the waters. Who like the complication.
The annoying things people have come to accept from Windows computing astound me. As a daily user of both OS's for decades, I always breathe a small sigh of relief when I get back to my Mac.
MacOSX is wonderful. It rarely frustrates. (Just scan down the list of Amazon's laptop best sellers, and see the average stars for Mac machines vs. Windows machines. Clearly, there is a difference in quality and ease of use that justifies the difference in cost.)
So, this review is much longer than I intended. But, after reading the initial reviews a month ago -of Mac zealots who hadn't purchased one who were whining about "no firewire" -of clean freaks who worried about microscopic scratches (barely a blemish on ours in this household with 3 cats, a dog, and 3 and 6 year old kids), I just had to put my 2 cents in. This is, in my opinion, the best laptop Apple has released.
Why? Because it is inexpensive (for a Mac) and does everything you need it to do.

"Non-slip" bottom is rather slippery and tends to gather crud easily, but then again, it's easy to wipe clean
While I would surely say that the new case is more pro than con (looks better, doesn't get dirty as easily, fingerprints rub right off) that high gloss is rather easy to scratch.
Finally, this is more neutral than con, I would have liked to have seen a $50 price drop, putting this machine for students and educators, who make up a sizable chunk of Apple's target demographic, at $899. With everything that has changed on this machine, I can see why it didn't happen.
Overall, I would say that this is an very solid machine. For those looking for the "best overall value" in the notebook line, I say that it would be a toss up for me between this guy and the 2.53 MBP. For most users, this is more than enough machine and would be my pick for them. With the overall features, value, and redesigned exterior (and interior), this is really a great machine.

Bought this 4 months ago and the hard drive just went. And I babied this thing. I was so careful. Sent it back on my dollar...they do not pay for shipping. They sent me a box with no instructions and very minimal packing. I couldnt believe they ship like this. But they tell you if you pack it yourself you are responsible for any damages that happen. Sent it back and now they are saying I owe them 280 bucks for a cracked screen but the hard drive is covered under the warranty. What?? Cracked screen??? Im can't even say how big of a mistake this has been purchasing this computer. Customer service is horrible. They just give you the run around and no one actually tells you what to do. I am so disappointed with the quality of computers. I feel like Ive been scammed. Zero stars if that was possible.:(
Overall, it does fine in a college setting and for typical personal use and the price is proportionate to performance. It is not absolutely perfect but very sufficient and manageable.I replaced my six year old desktop with this Toshiba.Working with pictures,I am completely satisfied with its performance.My wife's Toshiba has worked everyday for three years with no problems.It gives me everything that I want in a laptop. Love the sound out of the speakers. Also, I like how it doesn't get overheated like other laptops. I would recommend this laptop to anyone!
