HP sent me a defective screen on my new HP laptop. I requested them to replace the computer and they asked me to take a quick-ship model at a higher price. In addition, I have to pay for it first at a higher price with lower specs!! I asked for the manager and they rejected me saying they are busy.

I have bought 4 HP Pavilions over the last 10 years and this is how they repay me. If there are no problems, I am sure HP is fine. The real problem is if there is something wrong and you are stuck with their customer support. After 10 years, I am going with another brand. I have also spent 80 minutes on the phone with no avail.

I have put a similar comment on their HP website. Do you know they exclude the 1-star and 2-star comments from the consumers?!?! Therefore, I thought it is only fair for the consumers to know. If there is something wrong and you have to deal with their customer support, you will literally get the short-end of the stick. Therefore, you should think twice before purchasing from HP.

I have wasted two days of my life dealing them and now I am investing a full-day going through all the HP e-commerce sites to let the consumers know. Good luck with your purchase with HP.....

Wanted to provide some positive feedback on the laptop. Overall, I am impressed with the laptop. Below is a pro/con summary. Hope this is helpful.

Pros:

Speed is impressive

Durable keyboard and the lighting feature is cool

Quiet fan

Excellent sound with or without headphones (external speakers could use more bass)

Cons:

Mouse pad takes some getting use to

Screen clarity could be better (compared to a Vaio.)

HP ENVY 14-2130NR Notebook PC GrayI bought an envy 14 in April 2011 for my son who was going to college, the screen went dead in less then a year, I personally shipped it back for repair under warranty. When I got it back and powered on and it did not boot. I then found out that the internal hard drive was gone. I could not boot the laptop, of course nor verify if hp fixed the screen. I'm no an expert about laptop, so I called hp again,, after two days of trying, A case manager finally talked to me, and yet he accused me that I took out the hd myself before I shipped the laptop to them. I did not even know before where the hd was on this laptop, and I also questioned him if I already had one, why would I need another INTERNAL hd for my envy? He said I could sell it. I was so pissed by accused of cheating $100 hard drive. I have 2 laptops and one desktop from hp in my house, I'm so sure that I won't buy any products from hp ever again.

Later, HP sent me a hard drive w/o charges, but no bracket and no screws (I don't have them because hp service removed the hd on machince), after one more shipping, I finally install the hd and after 3 hour of loading os and all the services. I shipped this laptop to my son in college, a couple of week, the screen started blinking again. No, they did not fix the original screen problem, now my son in college has to deal with them directly. No, I'll never buy another hp computers again.

Another update, another screwup, this time when the laptop came back, they did not return the charger cable my son told me. I would have given hp zero star if I could.

After 3 repairs, this same problem came back again. I wonder what kind of company hp is running?? I understand any products could have problems, I'm ok if they could fix the problem. but....., a $800 laptop used for less than 2 years?? and what laughable is, Envy is supposed to be a better line of products, hp was thinking they could use Envy line to compete with Apple MBP?? No more hp products for my family for sure.

This machine has a lot going for it. The SSD drive puts it ahead of most of the competition given the price. I've owned an Envy 15 in the past and I can tell most of the kinks were worked out.

My only two issues: Screen and Switchable graphics.

Screen I knew the Brightview screen had been criticized, but the resolution is the industry standard for this size laptop. Still, something better would make this laptop pop.

Switchable graphics I can't tell it's actually switching over as I've noticed some reduced frame rates compared to my older Envy 15.

All-in-all, I still haven't found anything that beats this Envy for the value it provides

I am writing this view as a consumer who was once very loyal to HP products. This HP Envy is my fifth HP laptop.

While none of my other HPs were perfect, I did appreciate HP's customer service. Of course this was not perfect either, but I'll start off with the good. The exterior design of this laptop is appealing to the eyes. I like to keep my laptop clean and in good condition so the chicklet keyboard is also a plus for me. However, these features are not enough as I need a reliable and working computer. I do like HP's customer service as compared to other companies.

In the past, when my old HP laptop malfunctioned, their technical support messed up really bad. Once a tech support from India was very hostile and even advised me to configure my computer incorrectly. In the end, it totally messed up my laptop and rendered it unusable. After several complaints they gave me a brand new laptop that was a newer model so it appeased me for a bit. HP should have all of my calls logged. I have spent too many hours with tech support, which has deterred me from calling them this time.

There are many negative things I could say, but I'll just share my biggest annoyances. I have had this HP for 2 weeks and already the volume stopped working. I tried plugging my head phones in. Didn't work. I tried different programs. Didn't work. I tried restarting my computer twice but to no avail. It's very frustrating. Why the Beats upgrade if the darn thing doesn't work properly with the other features? I may have gotten a bad product out of several functioning ones, but seeing as how my other HPs were messed up, this can't be simply chance. This has to be poor vision, design, staffing, and/or quality assurance.

The touchpad is also sub par, which might be a software issue with Synaptics. Sometimes it doesn't scroll and I have to wait a few minutes for the scroll to work again. This can be inefficient if you try to read documents/sites with multiple pages. I have tried tweaking the touchpad several different ways but the features are not efficient. There's also a huge gap on the right side of the touchpad, maybe because whoever put this together did not care about symmetry. Others may not care.

I care. And I care about efficiency, reliability, and going with a company that cares about the same thing.

Although I was reluctant to by another HP laptop because of my previous experiences, I wanted to give them a chance to redeem themselves. Failed attempt.

Lenovo G570 4334EAU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

The setup:

I normally use a Toshiba L755, which I love. However, due to circumstances nothing short of disastrous, it required repairs I couldn't manage myself. These took FOREVER. I needed a computer in a hurry, and my only option was to buy a new, inexpensive one. This is the model I chose.

The beginning:

When I opened the box, I was pleasantly surprised. The computer feels very well made, more so in fact than the Toshiba. First, I upgraded the memory to 8GB, which was easily done. I plugged it in, turned it on, and started the lengthy update process necessary to keep Windows happy. It completed without error. I then set about installing the software I planned to use, and expunging the bloatware, which was less than came with the L755. Heartened that this might mean there would be no teething problems, I then went to work.

The muddle:

Though not as fast, everything appeared well... at first. This did not last long.

I burn a lot of DVDs. Instructional videos, Youtube videos, home movies, work videos, etc. the quality of these is very important to me. Those I created with the G570 were a DISASTER. They locked up. They skipped. They refused to play. I was furious.

I thought Lenovo had been saving money, putting a cheap DVD burner in my machine. I upgraded to a Samsung SE-208BB, which was simple, as Lenovo clearly has thought about ease of service. This improved things a bit. Discs no longer refused to play or locked up. However, they still skipped. Fighting my desire to find a fireaxe, I then turned my attention to Windows.

I burn discs using Windows all the time. It's easy, fast, and the best programmes for burning are FREE. I know my software well, and knew I wasn't at fault. So, I started tweaking.

Nothing helped. Days and DOZENS of ruined discs later, I was far behind, and entertaining dire thoughts about 'bargain' equipment. Then I had an Idea.

The end :

I upgraded the HDD to a 750GB WD Blue. This was easy. then I popped a Ubuntu 12.04 CD in the tray, and booted to CD. I whizzed through the Install/update cycle, added the equivalent programmes, held my breath, and set to work.

POOF! Problems solved! No skippy discs, no popups begging me to 'pleasepleaseplease buy our ', no 'reduced functionality' versions of software. All was right with the world!

Wait... why isn't the BATTERY charging?!

I GIVE UP

More when I figure out what the HELL is wrong this time.

UPDATE 25 Sep, 2012:

There IS a way to keep the battery at full charge in Ubuntu!

BEFORE YOU INSTALL UBUNTU!!!: Charge the battery fully, turn OFF all LENOVO ENERGY MANAGEMENT features, even those under the 'advanced' tab, then restart the computer. Leave the laptop plugged in whilst you install and update Ububntu. Restart the computer. It should now keep the battery topped up. At least, it has for me.

There remains NO WAY to burn an acceptable DVD under Windows7.

So far, very impressed. Fast, responsive. Like the non-top heavy lid. Keypad feel awesome, set up easy and complete walk through.

I bought this laptop on May 2011. 5 months later the left hinge came apart. It was fixed under warranty. On October 2012 the left hinge came apart again even though this laptop is handled carefully. Local Lenovo lab says they can't do anything but fix it if I pay for it. Google revealed it is a known failure. Lenovo still refuses to fix it again. Cars are fixed under recall years after warranty expires. I expect Lenovo to do the same. Meanwhile, I offer not to buy Lenovo.

I purchased the Lenovo G570 for my daughter to use in college. After reading several reviews, I thought it would be a great and affordable computer for her. Was I ever wrong! How I overlooked all the bad reviews, I don't know.

Essentially the problem is that repeated opening and closing of the lid causes internal parts to break. Many people have this occur within the first five months of owning the computer. My daughter treats her laptop gently and so it didn't start happening to her laptop until at about seven months.

Most people on the forum have had Lenovo refuse to repair it under warranty. The best solution I've read thus far is to disassemble the computer and then glue the hinges on with epoxy! We're still trying to figure out what to do.

Other than this problem, my daughter loves her laptop. However, if you don't intend to leave your laptop open all the time, I'd recommend you look elsewhere.

Couldn't have been happier with the overall buying and setup experience of this PC. Came from amazon with a very clean operating setup, and lenovo's boot optimizer is an excellent feature.

Would have bought a 14" unit purely out of preference and habit, the offset touchpad and placement of ancilliary keys seems odd compared to every other PC we have.

...but that was all ok.. until the screen hinge levered the case of this PC open at the left rear corner as it sits in your lap. Really? It's called a laptop. People, you know, set them in their laps to type with the screen open. So, that hinge should be,, um, at least vaguely sturdy!! #fail.

The first thing to mention is that these units are disappearing rapidly as inventory lowers and Dell stopped production as of May 1, 2011. There were specials on for over a month as Dell popped them out at a ridiculously low $350 US, presumably using the existing tooling until a new model went into production. Like a fool, all my instincts told me I should have bought a few and after receiving mine on May 6th, I realized that I should have bought a dozen at that price.

Well I managed to get one for myself (at least) and here is the info that should assist any and everyone in deciding if they should buy one.

Obviously it's difficult to accept paying so much more than when it was on special, but I will attempt to evaluate it, given the present price of $630.

It's fairly simple to make comparisons to other 13.3 inch Ultra Slims and from that info, you can decide for yourself if this is the most appealing of the group.

Since the specs are sparse on Amazon, here are the basics. An Intel ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) CPU SU7300, 2 gigs of DDR3 ram and a 320 gig 7200 rpm hard drive. None of the units in this class (Acer, Asus, Toshiba, etc) have dedicated expensive high level graphics cards built in and they all share similar video performance.(Intel HD Series 4 graphics)

So what would make you choose the V13 over the others?

2 things.....

1) The looks, build, slimness, brushed aluminum finish, etc

2) The superior speed from having a 7200 rpm hard drive.

A 7200 rpm drive is approximately 50% faster in performance than a 5400 model, however that does not translate into 50% more performance across the board. Booting up and shutting down will be faster as will all applications that are opened for the first time in a given session. Once these apps/programs are in the cache, the competitive machines with their slower drives should open apps as quickly as this Dell.

As an example, after booting up, let's say 15 seconds after arriving at your desktop image, the V13 might open Internet Explorer to a simple website like google.com, in 3 seconds flat, and then 1 second each subsequent time, whereas the 5400 rpm models from the competition might take 6 seconds the first time, but will also open it in 1 second, the second time and all subsequent times.

One might argue that is not enough to sway you away from other brands, but bear in mind that all apps opened for the first time in a session, will open a lot faster with the V13 than the others, so when you open Firefox, Google Earth, Microsoft Word and all others, you will not be made to wait as long as you would with the 5400 rpm models.

Hopefully, that issue is now 100% clear and we can move onto establishing whether it is the machine for YOU.

If you are reading this review, I presume it is because you have an interest in purchasing this model and there is no reason that we can't establish the pros and cons for you, well enough for you to make a good sound decision, sight unseen.

As you may know by now, it is the slimmest koolest looking Ultra Slim 13.3 incher on the market, bar none.

If you like the idea of having a kool looking machine that occupies so little space and is so easy to move around

(it's actually thinner than an iPad 1), this is probably the dream machine for you, but we need to look at one other aspect, performance vs battery life.

Competitive models like the now discontinued Toshiba T135, will get you 50% more battery life in exchange for the slightly slower performance. The V13 not only draws a bit more power because of its higher performance hard drive, but it also has a smaller battery, in order to fit into such a small slim case.

In short, in power saving settings, you will get 4 hours of service if your unit is well tweaked and you do not over burden it.

For example, I can have Yahoo Messenger, Live Messenger and Skype on, whilst viewing 4 internet pages, and I will get 4 hours of usage.

If you watch video or listen to music, the battery will run out a lot faster, as much as twice as fast.

If you are a frequent traveler, I suggest you consider the Asus/Toshiba or Acer models with longer battery life. The performance from those machines is quite acceptable and the battery life is fantastic.

If you are satisfied with a potential 4 hours of battery life and love the idea of having the koolest looking laptop around, the V13 is the machine for you.

People just go googoo gaga over it, when you hand it to them in their hands.

The easy portability is unsurpassed in its class.

So here is the price you will pay for having the koolest, slimmest, metal construction 13.3 incher with the fastest performance.

You will lose battery life as mentioned above, and some ports.

The V13 has only 2 USB ports and does not have an HDMI out for hooking up to your TV.

It does have Bluetooth which may come in handy for some folks, a VGA out, sound out and microphone in, an SD card reader, an Ethernet port and that's it.

There may come a time when you would like to use an external DVD or hard drive that requires both of your USB ports, so you wouldn't even have one to spare for your mouse, for example.

Personally, I have no problems with what I lose as compared to the competition's models, in order to get this fantastic form factor and the superior performance.

Others may disagree and with good reason, specially if additional ports are essential to them and if longer battery life is a critical factor.

If you have now decided that you want a V13, do not waste any time as the price will continue to go up until there are none left.

I bought one of these used (this model is no longer available from Dell), and I like it a lot.

Let me point out right away though it's one bad point: short battery life. 3 4 hours for web surfing etc. Less for more demanding tasks like playing video.

If you can live with that, I highly recommend it. It's not much heavier or bigger than a netbook. It's wider and deeper but it's really thin, so overall size comes out about the same really. You get a much better CPU (low voltage core2duo in mine), a 13.3" HD resolution screen, and a full-size keyboard. A major plus for my usage is that it plays full HD videos with no sweat, even streaming videos. Atom-powered netbooks just can't do this.

And this thing looks really cool... it's well-styled and it's strikingly thin. The lid and base are metal (aluminum I think). It attracts attention whenever I use it and people think it must have cost like $1000.

Dell has updated this model. The new one gives better battery life and a more powerful CPU, but it's heavier, thicker, and there's a battery "bulge" in the bottom. I actually much prefer this older model.

By far a perfect laptop for what I needed. Web, Office and mobile thin, good looking and power behind it.

Great buy if you looking for a ultra portable laptop with great performance and stylish look. I will admit the biggest downfall is the battery life...3-4 hrs max. Which based on new ultra notebooks coming to the market these days is too short. An outlet is never too far away for to long -

Taking the laptop as is it works great. No complaintsprob about a 3 in ranking. It was pretty basic everyday laptop.

However after adding a 128 SSD, 4GB Ram & 64 OS this thing flies! Would have bumped to a 5 if the battery life was around 5-6 hours. Definitely recommend doing if you decide to get before the stocks run dry.

Samsung R540-JA04 15.6-Inch Laptop (Silver)

I've had this computer for a week and so far, so great!! It took about 15 minutes to set up right out of the box which is amazingly fast compared to some computers I have purchased. What saved a boat load of time was not having to create a back up system restoration CD since it came with one -that right there made me fall in love with Samsung! I love the keyboard because there is a little bit of space between each letter so you can feel if your fingers start to move off the key -I sometimes have problems typing on laptops because the keys butt right up to one another. The "mouse pad" is better than a lot of other laptops I tested at the store but I still bought a wireless mouse. I was able to sync the laptop up to my wireless router and network it to my desktop computer (which is still running XP) pretty effortlessly, and I am by no means an IT person. I can now print from my laptop to the printer that is hooked up to my desktop computer via the router and network. LOVE IT! The battery doesn't seem to be the best out there. It seems to keep my laptop powered for maybe a little more than four hours, which is just fine for me but some other people might want to purchase a longer lasting battery. The battery pack does have a button that you can press to see how much "juice" is left so you can test it without having to turn the computer on. That was something I didn't expect to find but is a really nice feature that I'm glad to have.

The i3 processor is pretty quick and I'm really glad I didn't cheap out and go with anything less than the i3. I tested the camera just to make sure it works and it was pretty easy to use. I don't skype or anything so I probably won't use it much but it is nice to know it's there if I need it. The speakers sound ok nothing like the Boston speakers and sub I have on my desktop, but hey, this is a laptop. They are definitely not the worst laptop speakers I have ever heard and they have a decent volume to them.

It didn't come loaded with a bunch of crap software like some other computers I have purchased. Again, loving Samsung for that! It did come preloaded with Skype, Adobe Reader, and some games.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with this laptop and I would definitely make the same decision to purchase. I guess only time will tell on whether or not I will still love it in a year but right out the box it is awesome.

I think Samsung is becoming quality leader in computers and tvs.You get Sony quality without paying Sony prices.The computer came as ordered in a few days ,and I was very impressed with the beauty and quality of the Samsung.I registered and was informed that Samsung had added 3 more months to my warranty .Now that's what I call a great company.Setup was easy even for a non techie.I was surprised to find a watered down Word & Excel which was great since I never used all the functions of Word .Since Outlook express is no longer available ,I researched a little and downloaded Thunderbird and then found thet Microsoft had an email client called Windows Live Mail which is an improvement over Outlook Express .Setup was great ,I just typed in my email address and my password and that was it.No more configuring incoming ,outgoing, Windows took care of that .So far this laptop boots fast and is a pleasure to work with.I purchased Rebit5 a recovery system which I bought with 1tb hardrive and backed up everyhing .If I had one complaint it would be the computer is a little on the heavy side and the battery only last around 3 1/2 hours .But I come back to the reason I bought this laptop ,where do you get a computer like this for $499.99 ?

Really good laptop. My last laptop that I purchased was also a Sony Vaio. After about 4 years of service, it finally gave out on me. I bought this one this year, and I must say I love it. The programs that come with it are awesome. I love the touchscreen. Very intuitive. The processor doesn't skip a beat, and the graphics are handled very well. I haven't used it for much other than mundane internet practices yet, but playing movies looks great on it, and I love the connectivity to my Xbox with the smartglass app.

I was really excited to buy this, but am so disappointed because the touchpad/mouse malfunctioned on me within 30 days of buying it. It started acting up a few days prior (the cursor would get stuck for a few seconds, then catch up with where I had wanted to move it). Then it got worse and worse. I tried turning off the touchpad function completely a few times, but the only thing that would cure it was to restart or shut down altogether. Then, the left-click function stopped working completely. No matter where I placed my finger, it would result in bringing up the menu when you right-click. I could not select, highlight, or click on anything without resorting to the touchscreen. It was very frustrating and although I could remedy the situation by just using a real mouse, I did not intend to spend over $1000 on a laptop that has parts breaking within 30 days of buying it. Who knows what else would break down in the future. Definitely returned this and would not recommend to anyone.

I have owned this computer for about six months, and using the keyboard and touchpad have been a non-stop nightmare. I followed Sean's instructions in the customer reviews here and the keyboard/touchpad are working better now: the cursor no longer jumps randomly around the screen (try to deal with THAT while you're writing an email), passing the cursor over an onscreen object no longer immediately triggers it, etc. The space bar is still much less effective than it should be, though--it doesn't trigger easily, so I have to type hard to use it. In general, I would describe this machine as poorly designed for anyone who uses a keyboard extensively. So if you write for a living, don't throw your money away on this thing. In fact, don't throw your money away on this thing, period.

I bought this piece of junk on the recommendation of a friend and I am so sorry I did. I had to manually disable the touchpad because every time I typed the least little thing the cursor started jumping. Now I have to use a wireless mouse all the time. The space bar sticks constantly which really makes life miserable. I bought this mainly for word processing and it is useless since the keyboard is basically nonfunctional. What a waste of my hard earned money.

My sister bought this for me as a birthday present and because my gaming rigs power supply went up. I use it as a bathroom laptop to read news while I'm in there because trying to do anything else is a pain in the ass. The keyboard is a nightmare and you practically have to punch the keys to get them to register and the space bar oh god dont get me started on how annoying it is to have to constantly smash the damn thing to get it to work at all.

This thing sucks all because but the keyboard is worthless and youre better off plugging a mouse into it and using windows onscreen keyboard and clicking 1 letter at a time to type anything.

keyboard is unpredictable, and the touchpad is placed poorly so you are always moving the cursor when you are typing. The multifinger motions are unreliable at best. Don't forget because of the UEFI you wont get another OS installed. No cd drive, no backup disks.

The computer is a work of art. Never gets hot, unless playing Crysis 2. While playing crysis 2 this computer can easily perform 4-5 tasks while playing and switch screens in around 1-2 seconds using hardcore graphics. Now Skype, Chrome, WMP, and Starcraft 2 are an easy cake playing on Extreme graphics. The computer is light weighted and the HP logo lighted on the back is awesome. beats Audio is great for my guitar rig 5 and creating some beats on CUBASE 6.5. This computer is everything I expected. The only bad thing to say about it is the incorporated mouse buttons wich they make a weird noise when pressed. everything else is working on perfect conditions. So good so far!.

Laptop came a day early, so great delivery from the company. I'm no computer guru but here are my thoughts:

PROS:

-Very fast startup/shutdown

-Stays relatively cool (gets a little hot when playing graphic intensive games)

-Around 5.7 pounds (rather lightweight for its specs/size)

-Keyboard is comfortable to use esp. with backlight

-Powerful graphics card (Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 run smoothly with maxed out settings after a bit of startup lag)

-Fast processing (switching and opening many windows/games is very quick)

CONS:

-Fan can get pretty loud and hot esp. when gaming (well i guess its expected for a laptop)

-Battery life is less than 2 hours for gaming

-Mousepad might feel a little cheap and has a little annoying noise when you press it

-Bloatware (though not as much as some comps)

-Powerbrick might be inconvenient

-Beats audio is relatively good, but does not reach expectations (use headphones for better experience)

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons by a boatload, as the cons are just a few annoying tidbits I found. Not an absolutely perfect laptop, but for the price, I recommend to everyone, especially gamers.

I bought my Pavillion dv6 in april and the BEATS audio has never worked right. The volume level fluctuates when playing music...doesn't matter what program is used...they all do it....Itunes, Zune and Windows Media. It also doesn't matter if the laptop speakers are used or headphones or external speakers. HP tech support told me my laptop needed to be repaired. There are several threads on the HP online forum discussing this very issue and it's happening on all different HP models. The root cause is the driver used for the BEATS audio. HP says they're going to fix the driver but I'm not holding my breath. Make sure you check this out before buying!!!!

Toshiba Satellite PSK2CU-0K101S P3200

I was in the market for a new laptop for school that I could pick up for a good price. I ended up narrowing it down to a few models in the $400 $500 range with a 15.6" display. I ended up getting the Toshiba Satellite L655-5150 at Best Buy for $450, but seriously considered a few others. The Toshiba had 4GB of RAM, the most offered in this price range. The hard drive was only 320GB, but for me that is plenty. I have 2 TB of external drives I use to store videos and archived files on. If hard drive space is more important to you, you can find models offering 500 GB in this price range (The Gateway NV5105u is one I was considering.). The Intel P6200 processor is good, but not necessarily the best offered in the range (The Dell Inspiron I15R-1197MRB comes with a 2.4GHz I-3.). The inclusion of a number pad on the keyboard was a big selling point for me, and the overall aesthetics of the computer are good. Setup was extremely easy and the computer came with very little bloatware installed on the system. I am happy with the Toshiba, but there are several contenders in the "value-priced" laptop category. I think my second choice would have been HP's G62-457DX for $400.

I had the opportunity to set up the Best Buy (Torrance, CA) version and the experience was easy -for a PC -which is saying a lot from this Apple fiend. These are the steps this set-up required: 1) This rig was added to an existing PC only network behind a Lynksys router running a desktop and a Toshiba Satellite L505; 2) I registered w/ Toshiba; 3) Microsoft driven updates totaled 40 which took 3 turns of installing & restarting, but with this speedy machine it was a breeze; and 4) I downloaded and installed individually a menu of free/open source security software including AVG AV, Clam AV, Clam Win, Zone Alarm Firewall, and Panda Cloud AV -(so much because one of the users is Skype/social networks fiend, and so far no problems, and I like to keep it so).

The actual hardware is fabulous -very responsive keys on the keyboard which look like chiclet design to me. The boot and re-boot and turn off times are incredible for this price range. It feels like a well made and well thought out laptop. The only problem I had was the balance on my Podium Cool Pad laptop stand ( ) -the laptop is top heavy perhaps due to the 6-cell battery -and unless balanced precisely it will fall over screen first which is not good for rugged, gaming, dorm room/student use.

The owner set up the webcam, Skype and facial recognition features, and they must be very easy and smooth because I have received no Help! requests, and I hear much laughter from their area.

I bought the toshiba satellite L655-S5150 last February when my old computer broke. I was in a pinch and had to buy a computer that day. I ended up getting this one on sale in the $400 to $500 price range (I can't remember the exact price). I love this laptop. It is by far my favorite computer that I have owned and I have had no problems with it. I like that a numeric pad is also on the key board. My husband ended up getting the same series but a different model than mine and the only difference I notice in his is that his keyboard is backlit. Nice feature, but I wouldn't have paid for it. All in all you can't go wrong with this laptop. I am a full time student and I can keep everything I need on here.

I live in Costa Rica and ordered a Lenovo computer after several good recommendations from friends. I am a programmer and my main concern was CPU speed and amount of RAM memory. This computer works smooth after uninstalling all the bundled software that comes with it, including the face recognition software. The trackpad is very good, I personally like it, but I guess it is a matter of taste.

Pros

It is a pity that Lenovo installs that amount of software in a computer. It should be an option, at the first time of use. Otherwise, a great computer. Highly recommend it if you don't mind spending at least 1 hour uninstalling all the crap... For my part, for $699 (bought at Amazon on Marco 2010), I like this computer very much...

After much debate I decided on purchasing a Lenovo G560. Spec wise, an i5 processor, 4gb ram, led screen, sleek design, and lenovo quality made it seem like a great bargain. Off the bat I had to agree. The fit and finish are top notch. I was not bothered by the smuding of the outside because when the screen is open you can't see it! When you are working on the PC, it feels like a desktop, the space is utilized very well. The appearance is minimalistic and sleek. IMO if it had chiclet style keys it would be even a more beautiful interior setup than apple. The keyboard is nice to type on. The shift button is a bit small but this didn't really result in any functional problems. In addition, the number pad is a bit cramped, especially if you have big fingers. I did not have that much trouble with the track pad as others. It has a nice textured feel and supports multitouch. The integrated buttons although appear nice, are a bit cumbersome because it seems like the whole pad clicks, but you must press in the designated area for it to work. I use a great wireless mouse so this is not an issue. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. The only screen that looks better is the high resolution optional screen on the apples. Windows 7 works very fast on this computer with super fast start up and shutdown. Windows 7 in general is pretty sweet and IMO if you are used to windows, provides much of the "it just works" features of a mac with the familiarity of a PC. So at this point, I LOVE the computer. Heres the downfall, I am listening to music and it sounds just beautiful. I notice my battery is starting to fade so I plug it into the wall. Buzz buzz buzz, there is static from my headphones! Remove the plug, no buzz, put it back, buzz. I've read about this happening on other computers and everyone says oh just get a hum reducing this or that but when i'm spenind $700, I don't want to buy adapters to reduce humming! Although with loud music this isn't and issue, I do my work with soft instrumental music and in lulls and in between songs I can hear it and it drives me crazy. In addition, it is supposed to have fan management to reduce heat and fan noise. This feature seems to work well most of the time, but sometimes, it goes into this mode where it will turn on for 30 seconds, then off for a minute, and repeat for several minutes and is somewhat annoying. Again, it was only noticable because I was in a very quiet setting. Overall, this computer is neaaaarly amazing, but it has some issues, that for me, are just too significant to continue dealing with. Verdict: will return the computer, hope lenovo addresses these issues and will either buy another lenovo, or go back on the hunt.

DO NOT BUY...till they fix the mousepad on this thing. This thing seems to have gone through absolutely no QA before being shipped.

I've been using HP's and Dell's and heard a lot about Lenovo's so went ahead and bought this one. Nice laptop with a good LED screen and i5 processor but what's the point if you can't work it using the mousepad. It is beyond horrible the mouse has a mind of it's own. Does not follow the finger well at all. Sometimes I'll keep moving my finger and the mouse would be left behind somewhere. Just grabbing a window slider to scroll a window is a hugely frustrating task. I've tried all kinds of mouse setting available but nothing seems to make this better. And the buttons are all part of the mouse pad. On my HP I can move the mouse and hit the left/right button using just one hand. No such luck on this one. You need mucles to depress that button and the fact that it's built into the mousepad instead of being separate buttons makes it even harder. So now you need two hands one to move the pointer around and another to depress the mouse.

Going to talk to Amazon right now to figure out what to do about this. Once I started using this and figure out the mousepad is so horrible I thought I got a bad piece so I googled. Apparently it's a known issue but Lenovo continues to ship defective laptops. My first and last Lenovo for sure. Don;t know if I can [ut in links but just seacrh for Lenovo trackpad/mousepad issues before buying....

I regret purchasing this laptop. That being said, It appeared to be a great deal of machine for the price. I chose it because of the Core i5 CPU, plus the 4gb of ddr3 RAM that is expandable. I reasoned that for $600 I might as well take advantage of the latest offering from Intel.

The Core i5 chip has four internal processors, but the mobile version doesn't. It does offer four threads versus the two of the Core 2 Duo, and the chip is thinner at 32nm. It is questionable where the marketing claims of Intel and reality lie. For instance, the Turbo-Boost sounds great until you read the fine print and realize that 300mhz is not much extra bang. The desktop version of the Core i5 and i7 CPU are real number crunchers, while the i5-430 mobile CPU on this laptop may be something else.

All the reviews regarding the track-pad understate the frustration I have felt!

However much I like this machine, the track-pad made me want return it, or throw it...

Additionally, you will need a cooling pad. The new processors run hot and suck 35 Watts of power. The fan is the loudest of any laptop I have owned. Rather irritating as it still runs periodically even with the cooling pad.

If I had to do it over again, I would have chosen an ultra low voltage Core 2 Duo laptop, either the SU-4100 or SU-7300 series. The thought of eleven hours versus less than three hours of battery is tempting after this experience. Lenovo does not offer an extra capacity battery for this machine.

I've had this laptop for about 2 weeks.

Pros:

* sleek modern design (gray, brushed metal)

* good value (HDMI out, i5 CPU, webcam w/ mic, 4gb RAM)

* bright clear and crisp LED screen

* decent battery life

Cons:

* as other reviewers have noted trackpad is unresponsive at times (see below)

* low screen resolution (1366×768)

* preloaded with lots of bloat-ware.

The trackpad at times seems overly sensitive and sometimes not sensitive enough. At first, I thought it was my hand interacting with the multi-touch software (which lets your scroll down webpages, drag and drop, etc. with motions on the trackpad) but even after turning off those features, it does not completely resolve the problem. Lowering the sensitively of the trackpad does help, but even then the trackpad seems to not respond to motions and does not even detect a mouse click. Since the mouse buttons are integrated into the trackpad, I can only conclude it's an issue with the pad itself.

The 1366×768 screen resolution is fairly standard with 14-15" laptops these days, but that seems low. The desktop icons seem huge. With a i5 CPU and a 15.6" screen, I'd expect the resolution to go up to 1280×1024.

Overall, I'm a bit disappointed with the Lenonvo G560. On paper, specifications and price point offer a lot of value, but unfortunately, the trackpad issues ruins an otherwise solid laptop.

I just bought Men in Black 3D and it won't play in 3D mode. Windows media says it can't be run on its player.

Being an older model, two years old in the electronic world seems to be ancient as told by me at the tech office for hp. I did not care about the age of the model, it was the specs of the model that sold me. I really wanted a full hp 3d laptop, and all others were more expensive and heavier and more bulky. This computer for the average user like myself is just great. I do alot of photo editing and music related stuff, so this laptop has the power and space and speed to handle just about everything I like to do. The screen is very bright! and it is perfect for 3d as glasses can hold back alot of light. The black contrast is excellent! I have only had it for a couple weeks and have found nothing I don't like about it. If anything at all there is one thing. The menu for hp smart player to watch movies does not show the 2d/3d mode for watching movies. It only displays it in the demo mode. Once you put a movie in, it is no longer an option. What I mean by that is, you can not change the movie mode for turning a normal blu ray movie into a 2d ( simular 3d movie ) other than that, it is a fine machine. Also hp does not have an update for windows 8 to run the 3d options. I was told they are working on it, and will have one soon. so keep the windows 7 on this model until update is ready.

I really am suprised at how much I am liking this little sucker the more I use it, the back lit keyboard is really nice for myself. I got it in a pinch as i have been traveling a little more then usual. I bought it really expecting to return it, thinking the overall (especially screen) size was too small. I can say that due to overall quality, and design, i am really impressed, of course there is the bloatware one must get rid of, but one of the biggest things I like is the keyboard, I am not a great typest or even a typist, so this is such a nice suprise, i guess its just the ergonomics are so well thought out or the "solid" feel maybe...but its great! watching any kind of news video, or a true 1080HD so far is stellar on this little screen, the wireless antenna is simply rockingly sensitive, the best at picking up signals compared to others everytime I have checked another laptop and mine together.

I was seconds away from purchasing an Apple Macbook Air, due to they're design in their quality of materials and ergonomics philosophy, I was sold once I picked it up and "felt" how well made and "saw" the fit and finish and "knew" of the great customer satisfaction apple provides. The saleman and I went to one certain site i couldnt use my desktop for, the only site the portability was important (paramount really) I needed to use a laptop for, and the software to update the speed and redlight camera databases only worked with windows 7, the reason I am telling the whole story is....I am comparing it to the Macbook Air 13" which was aluminium, not plastic, and running Mac OS, so the sony doesnt have a better material for its casing, apple gets that one, and the OS is your call as I certainly have nothing against Windows 7 (its the bomb IMHO) so....the build quality is second to none (up to and including Apple) and due to its ability to do everything I need, and do it with this awesome keyboard and solid build, an example of this is; the hinges on screen(and screen) are built very well, and balanced perfectly (slightly loosened over time so-as to lift up EXACTLY like the macbooks. I dont forget the Apple's are the benchmark, but sony did thier homework on them, its styled very much like a macbook air, slightly larger, but it was $600 dollars less, and for the price the sony had a faster processer then the air with its core duo (at time of this writing, expected updates anytime), vs i5, 500gb HDD vs 640gb, and numerous other little thing you get (and dont get without buying an Apple) I personally feel like its my own Windows Macbook, only because its built so damn well....

If you are looking for a "smaller" sized, quality laptop on par, and in some way maybe even an edge' on others, and certainly better then your kids 15" "run of the mill" school laptop, this little baby is fast, huge HDD, great Xtra's HDD protection, and the ever getting cooler and more useful (to myself) intel wireless display then its gonna end up being a good choice, even for a guy thinking he was gonna take it back, now its my buddy, and because it is small, yet well built, I use it and take it more then all other computers, even when not traveling, my new 17" toshiba sits, while i grab the lil one thats not only fast, reliable and looks great, has a keyboard that make it easy for me to type, which is important to me..

I bought the this new at BestBuy for $1,050 and have regretted every minute of owning this machine.

The Software is extremely faulty (but this is Microsoft's fault, not Sony).

The hardware looked great first, and attracted me to buying it in the first place. Two months down the road the whole top of the computer is peeling off from normal use. The computer is only 4 months old and it looks like it is 4 years old now. The quality of the materials is extremely low and cheap. This computer probably costs Sony $100 bucks to make.

The interior hardware worked for two months and then the Wiimax adapter completely broke down. I called Sony support and they re-installed the drivers 3 times. By the third time the Sony rep said that it was a hardware issue and I had to send the computer to Sony for repair. You do not want to hear this with a brand new laptop.

I have regretted owning this and am disappointed that Sony created such a bad product and charged us over $1,000 for it. Had I known the hardware and the exterior of the laptop was going to peel off like a sticker then I would have gone ahead and bought a cheaper brand, perhaps an HP or a Lenovo.

Sony never called me back to help with the repair and they never sent me any additional information after contacting them 3-4 times.

Gateway NV55S15u 15.6-Inch Laptop (Ebony Black)

I've had the Model NV55S15u for about a month and a half now with no issues whatsoever. That is more than I can say for the laptop of another brand, which began freezing up soon after it arrived. That one went back, as did a Gateway nearly identical to this model, which unfortunately came with a squeaking PgDn button that liked to get stuck. Fortunately for me, the third attempt at a new laptop wasn't a strikeout.

This model has been a pleasure to use, is very responsive with no stumbles or slow downs. I'm sure I'll never fill the 640gb HDD to capacity, but it's nice to have the additional space since the pre-installed software takes up a fair amount of room. I use it mainly as an energy-saving replacement for a desktop computer. Although it comes with a 65W power supply, my measurements indicate that (with the battery fully charged) it consumes only about 12W during typical Web browsing, 18W while burning a DVD and 21W playing a HD video. Power consumption goes way up if the battery is receiving a charge, of course.

As do other manufacturers, Gateway recommends calibration of the battery by operating the laptop exclusively from battery power until the battery is exhausted. I did that over the course of two days and probably got at least four hours of battery life overall with light use and wireless enabled. Since power drain is directly related to processing, display brightness, speaker volume, external accessories, etc. your experience might vary.

The miniscule internal speakers leave much to be desired in the way of sound quality and volume, but that can be worked around by using a set of headphones or amplified speakers. There is some noise from the HDD and occasionally the fan, but that is typical. This machine doesn't get overly warm, unlike some others I've read about.

The multi-gesture touchpad can take some getting used to and it is easy to inadvertently rub against it by mistake if you're not careful. I'm sure other laptops share this annoyance. Since I'm not using mine as a portable, I simply plugged in a USB mouse, which I personally find easier and faster to use. I do prefer the smoothness of the touchpad on this machine to the textured feel of some others I tried, feeling that their roughness might be hard on the fingertips in extended use. I don't find the single 'seesaw' button bar below the touchpad to be any harder to use than dual buttons would be.

The 'Windows Experience Index' of the laptop I have is 5.9 on a scale of 1 to 7.9. I recommend you check this performance rating whenever you are able to test-drive a computer that is on display in a store. Simply right-click on 'computer,' then left-click on 'properties.' You can then click on the link to the right of the number to see more information. This is a great way to compare the performance of different machines.

To sum up, I have no reservations about recommending this as a good, middle-of-the-road laptop for the general user.

I very rarely write reviews for products on Amazon.com, in fact, I think this is a first. That's how much I like this notebook PC. It is SUPER FAST both online and with the applications that don't require Internet access. Plenty of hard drive space and RAM to get a lot done whether you're using it for entertainment or professional reasons. The only thing I have NOT liked really so far is that the touchpad mouse is what is called a "Multi-Gesture Touchpad" mouse, and when I bought this computer, I had never heard of that before, and it's taking some getting used to, that's for sure. Basically, you can put your thumb and forefinger on the mouse and move both of them around to manipulate objects on the screen. It's supposed to make things easier I guess, but it just made things more difficult for me really. I was on my Facebook page one day and I was trying to figure out how exactly the mouse worked and I ended up shrinking the text and graphics on my FB Wall so small it was unintelligible! Fortunately, it was only in the browser I was using at the time. If I were to go on another computer, or even in another browser on the same computer, it would look normal. I deleted the browser history, cache/temp files, etc. and logged back into FB and it was still small just from that one browser. I ended up having to uninstall/reinstall that browser to restore the correct look just to FB.com and it was all due to the "Multi-Gesture Touchpad" mouse scrunching my text and graphics and me not being able to figure out how to UN-scrunch them, lol. Another problem I have is when I'm online, if I have to "refresh" my browser page, I prefer to press the F5 button vs clicking the "refresh" browser button. With this computer, you have to hold down the "Fn" key before pressing the F5 key because if you just press the F5 key alone, that is the equivalent of shutting off the monitor. Or maybe it's the "sleep mode" button, I can't tell what that symbol is? HD graphics are great too. Overall, I'm happy with this computer. For the price paid, the mouse problem, and the few weird things I had to get used to with the keyboard I had to get used to were well worth it for this great machine. :)

I bought this laptop 6 months ago after comparing tons of different laptops for college, but i also wanted a computer with enough power to play games, and this laptop is perfect for all of those. Lots of RAM and Hard drive space and the graphics card isn't too bad. I have downloaded a lot of games and music, uploaded a lot of photos and videos and i still have plenty of space left. I was surprised at how well this Laptop can run games. It can play MOST new games on medium to high settings. I am able to play Skyrim and Borderlands on high video settings without any lag. I ran the Windows experience index test and it scored high on all the tests. The test is based on a scale of 1.0-7.9 It scored a 5.9 on graphics and RAM, and a 6.5 on 3d Business and gaming graphics performance, which is very good. So far i haven't had any problems with this computer, the only downside is the battery life. If you are just using the computer for homework or business you probably wont have a problem with battery life, but if you are going to be playing a lot of games, running 3D creation programs, or watching a lot of movies you might want to get a larger battery or plug it in, but that hasn't been an issue for me and i am very happy with my purchase. If you want a powerful Laptop at a good price then this one is perfect.

It was worth the purchase price. Though the battery life, is pretty bad. It can run for about 2 hours I'd say on normal settings and depending on what you do. Overall, nice computer though.

Personally I think this laptop stinks! I've owned numerous laptops but this one totally irritates me. The sensitivity on the glide pad is awful, even after adjusting the settings! Occasionally the monitor decides to shut down when in use. I do not download any crazy applications which could slow the computer down, however, shutting it down can take some time. The free virus scan offered with this computer, California whatever CA, is so so. When I called them up I got someone with some accent who I had difficulty understanding and visa versa, I decided to just do it online. When you're offered something for free thats what you get. You're better off going to Best Buy or whatever, and buy a Virus Protection disk (something solid you can hold), and just download it that way, then allow the program to make automatic updates. The Volumn is way too low, even when you set it on the loudest setting. I am far from being deaf, but you can not increase it much. The response time, when clicking a short cut on the desk top is quite slow, and gets a bit slower as time goes on. It has frozen on me a few times. This is the only laptop I own which kicks me off when I am using Magic Jack. This is NOT a software problem, its the laptop! For a quad core its quite slow, especially when shutting down. Oh, it could have been offered with a blu-ray player or inscriber, but they probably knew it wouldn't work the way they configured this laptop! I doubled the RAM to 8 GB in hopes of some improvement. Stick with an i3 or higher! As you figured out by now, overall, I do not recommend this computer, contrary to the other reviews who speak highly of it. I have numerous other complaints, but I'll leave it at that! Wish I never bought it!

G46VW is a powerful 14' laptop, especially for those gamers. The dual vent really help to keep it cool, and the seller could offer free IC DIAMOND on CPU and GPU, that may benefit the thermodynamic performance. The only thing I should concern may be the battery, it is not user-removable, so I have to use it carefully to maintain the battery life.

This is a very good computer for the price..especially with the specs it comes with. The only downfall is the 1366x768 screen..but at the same time for a 14inch screen it isn't a deal breaker you can always hook it up to a tv or monitor since you have a 2gb GTX 600m.

I ordered one of these from Dell sight unseen. I ordered the Ubuntu Linux version customized with an 8gb SSD, 1gb of RAM, no Bluetooth and no Webcam. it's a great little computer. I mostly got it for checking email, surfing the web and making Skype calls while I'm traveling. Small size and light weight were the main features I was looking for. The Mini 9 is half the size and weight of my full size laptop.

I chose Dell over Asus and Acer because I think Dell makes better quality products. The Asus eeePC looks kind of cheaply made. I didn't order the Acer, because I've had hardware problems with Acers in the past and Acer tech support pissed me off. The HP netbooks look good, but I've been a bid Dell fan for years. Dell is also the only manufacturer that ships netbook computers with Ubuntu, the most popular Linux operating system. I am switching to Linux because Microsoft pissed me off with Windows Vista. I switched to Ubuntu Linux on my full size old Dell laptop as well.

So here is my review. This little computer is very solid and well built. I think it will last for years, like the other Dell products I've owned in the past. The battery life is good. It's rated at 4 hrs, but other reviewers claim 3 1/2 hours. That's still pretty good. The card reader slot is a nice feature. I picked up a 4gb SD card from Amazon for $10 for extra storage. Some XP users even get a 16gb SD card and move their My Documents folder to it do save hard drive space. The 8.9 inch 1024x600 screen is very sharp. It's a great quality screen, but it is kind of small. Oldsters will need to get out their reading glasses to use it. I think any computer this small would have the same problem though. I would give this computer 5 stars, but the keyboard takes some getting used to. Some of the keys like ' are hard to find and the shift key is small. I find myself hitting the touchpad while typing and it makes the cursor jump all around. Now I use a USB mouse instead of the touchpad. It works a lot better that way. I can live with the small keyboard. It's just a compromise for the small size, weight and portability.

Computer didn't come with Microsoft internet. Also had a few scratches on the outside. Otherwise it was in fairly desent condition. Felt like I paid to much for it to have scratches and for there not to be any programs on it. I'm having to send to the geek squad and have programs installed in order to use. I originally got this for my 9 year sons birthday and he couldn't even use it. He enjoys netflix and I couldn't install the programs in order to use it. My son was really bummed. It did arrive on time.

I ordered my Dell Mini 9 on 9/20/08. The battery has failed and won't charge. I wish I had checked other brands before I ordered this one. The hard drive is small and there is no CD/DVD drive. I purchased an external drive (Targus) and found that I had to purchase software to support the DVD drive. Very disappointed.

This laptop (Acer 5050) performs well. I have been very pleased with how it runs. The problem is that the power supply adaptor is defective. This happens so often, there is actually an external charger sold for the battery that you can find on amazon. I have had the adaptor connection on the laptop go out twice in 18 months. What's worse is unlike HP laptops, there is no docking station port to get around this problem. Acer will temperarely fix the problem for 400$, and is very unsympathetic in regards to helping me or their other customers find a solution. For this reason, I unfortunately had to give an otherwise good product a 1 star :(

Too bad because this would otherwise be a cost effective laptop, but with the mounting repair bills, it quickly becomes one of the most expensive laptops one will ever own.

Works great, but like all ACER laptops, make sure to use a chill mat to protect your computer. If it gets too hot, ACER computers have been known to die because of overheating.

Two years after, it won't boot any more. Hard disk is fine. Fan is running. The board burned out, no display and no BIOS on screen.

$600+ wasted.

I read the reviews about this netbook. I paid particular attention to those with driver problems. I decided it was good value and that I'd take the risk of dealing with any potential driver problems. After receiving the netbook and doing the initial sign-on and setup, the first thing that I then did was start the HP Support Assistant, selected 'Updates & tune-ups' and applied all updates before proceeding. Only then did I apply all the windows updates via the normal windows updates. All updates went on fine without any problems. It was only then that I proceeded to install any other software. I've had no driver problems or network issues what-so-ever. All my favorite programs work just fine. This is a nice little netbook and I'd recommend it. The only issues I had any trouble with was setting up the T-Mobile access. I was unable to register online because the online registration process requires a phone number associated with the SIM card. This was fixed by calling T-Mobile and getting a phone number assigned to the SIM. The only other problem was then setting up an online account with T-Mobile. To setup this account requires that a temporary password be sent, via a text message, to the SIM. This process assumes that you're setting up a phone, not a netbook or PC. There was no way to receive this message on the netbook. According to T-Mobile support the only way to get this password was via this text message. They recommended that I remove the SIM and put it in an unlocked phone or take it down to a local T-Mobile store have them do that for me. Fortunately, I had an older unlocked phone that accepted the SIM and I was able to text the password that way. Other than that everything setup just fine. The performance is good for such a little machine. I purchased this mostly for when I travel. Now I'm retired so I only travel for pleasure not business. While actually traveling I mostly use it as an entertainment device, mostly playing games and watching videos. However, I also use it for other functions, like tracking my finances via Quicken, which it also performs very well. Battery life is good, not great, but more than adequate. This netbook performs very well in this capacity. So don't believe all those negative reviews concerning the drivers. You just need to make sure you update everything first, starting with the HP drivers via the Support Assistant.

I am using the HP Dm1-4310nr as my primary machine and am very pleased with its performance. It boots up quickly, runs all my software efficiently, and has a plethora of ports for connecting externals. Thumbs up!

I was just about ready to send this one back, but decided to give it one more shot with HP tech support. I normally shun tech support these days because of the severe offshore-ness that has infested support centers these days. However, I liked the cellular broadband capabilities of this unit and nothing else on the current market fits my requirements as this one does. The fellow in India I got connected with turned out to be an extremely knowledgeable chap with fine language skills. What it appears is that HP sent these little buggers out with terribly immature drivers for the cellular broadband networking and the support software loaded on this machine was also seriously deficient. It took the better part of an hour to get these items corrected, but the end result is a laptop that now functions as it should and fits the bill for me superbly. Also, Windows 8 is easily tamed to look and function nearly identical to Windows 7, so don't let all the bad press and whining deter you. I recall the same loud noises when Windows 7 was sent to replace XP.

I was looking for something to replace an older 'large' laptop that I use primarily when traveling. After much debate I dismissed the tablets because they really didn't have all of the functionality I require. I chose the DM1-4310nr because of its weight, size, price and the HP reputation (I've owned many HP products).

With the exception of Windows 8, which I'm still trying to adapt to, this laptop has performed better than any laptop previously owned. I am very pleased with its rapid wireless connection and the way it zips through files, especially large photos. The one thing that has been a challenge is the lack of disk drive. This has caused work arounds to install software I own that is on disks.

I've had the product for a week. It does need to be customized and is taking some time to get use to (due to windows 8) but i don't have any complaints. As far as price it was cheaper, quicker and easier then when i tried to order it directly from HP. two thumbs up for amazon. I haven't tried to set up the tmobile wifi get. Also it automatically added the other devices (printer, laptops, xbox) on mynetwork which was great for me, but if you don't want to share these locations there's ways of blocking it. Also it came loaded with ALOT of Microsoft windows programs that are similar to the gmail ones i use so i had to delete them (video chat, calendar, email etc.) as they were set to default and want to sync and i'm happy with my gmail products.

Sony VAIO S Series SVS1311BFXW 13.3-Inch Laptop (White)

This is my second vaio. after going through all the options on amazon i chose this one for the smaller size and significantly lighter weight than my last one. I decided that since i use the laptop mostly in bed or travel the size and weight was the first priority. I love how light it is and the battery life is amazing. My last one got down to about an hour and this is such an improvment. My only real complaint and it is a big one is the track pad. It is so annoying. Instead of the traditional pc right and left click buttons they have emulated the mac style trackpad and it is a disaster. So what if you can swipe, flip pictures and pinch the screen bigger and smaller when everytime you just want to click on a hyperlink or open a new tab it left clicks when you want to right and vise/versa. There doesn't seem to be a consistant place on the pad where you can guarantee it's going to do what you want it to do. When I bought my son his second vaio i made sure it had the traditional split keys below the track pad because it would have driven crazy. I wish I had known but i'm suffering through since i like everything about it. you have been warned!

I've only been using it a few weeks, but I'm happy with the purchase.

I needed to make a few adjustments to become happy, though. Out of the box, it was VERY slow for an i5, mostly due to the Sony bloatware. Even after I removed the majority of the Sony bloatware, it still didn't seem as quick as it should be. I decided to upgrade the HDD to a solid state drive. I put in an Intel 520 series 180 GB, which although is smaller, it's more than I need for a part time portable laptop (I did check with Sony and they indicated swapping out the HDD would void the warranty, but if I had issues I could easily put the old one back in for service). I also added in another 8 GB memory chip (12 GB total now). The SSD and more RAM difference was huge. The laptop is now MUCH quicker and boots up and shuts down in less than 15-20 seconds.

Overall, it's hard to call it an ultrabook at 3.8 pounds, but it is very light and portal for a laptop that has an optical drive. I agree with others that most of the time, you don't really use an optical drive on a laptop, but it sure is better to have a built-in one than external on the few times you usually need it.

The display is a matte finish and more than adequete. I've seen clearer displays with a gloss screen, but it's clear enough, plus you don't get and glare or reflections with the matte finish. I like the white finish more than I originally thought I would. I also like the back-lit keyboard, but if I did have a complaint about it, it would be using it during the day. The keyboard keys are gray and the light is white. If it is not substantially dark, it is hard to read the keys. There are settings so you can set to only turn on the back-lit light when it detects darkness.

The mouse pad is a little sensitive, but after using it for a little while. It's not the best I've ever used (MacBook), but it's not the worst I've ever used.

I picked up the laptop during Amazon's lightning deals during Thanksgiving, and I'm happy with the purchase for $629. For me it was between this laptop and a ASUS Zenbook UX31E-DH52. The ASUS lost out due to being $300 more, having Windows 8, had so-so reviews (a lot of complaints about touchpad), and there seemed to be some concern that HDD's were harder to upgrade due to proprietary connectors.

i bought this computer from Amazon warehouse in used-very good condition. i am extremely happy with the physical condition of the laptop. it looks brand new and the laptop itself is beautiful. i absolutely love the white, and it's the perfect size. now to the frustrating part... windows had been reinstalled so it isn't factory. none of the Sony drivers were included... this sucks, because there are quite a few features that won't work without them. for instance, the track pad was awful, painfully slow, and wouldn't do any of the things described (pinch to zoom etc) until i installed the proper driver from Sony support. missing battery drivers keep forcing hibernation. i couldn't even follow the steps in the start up guide because none of the top buttons will work without drivers. there are numerous other drivers that need to be downloaded as well, and some of them just won't install without the factory version of windows. I've had the laptop for 3 days now and I've spent those days chatting, emailing, and phoning Sony support trying to resolve issues without much luck. i really do love it, but i think i might have to return it if i can't get it running properly... also, if you are expecting any of the software mentioned in the description, it's not there either... I'd love to just do a clean factory reset, but you have to buy the disks from Sony, and i wasn't really expecting to have to put this much time and money into something i was planning on enjoying right out of the box.
