X53U-XR2,BLACK,15.6 HD (1366 768),AMD E350,4G DDR3,HD 4250,320G 5400,SUPER Multi

X53U-XR2,BLACK,15.6 HD,AMD E350,4G DDR3,HD 4250,320G 5400,SUPER MultiBeing a current and very happy owner of an ASUS Netbook ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch Netbook (White) I thought this would make a nice gift for my brother who just moved 300 miles from me so we could keep in touch by Skype. Before I let him have it, I spent a few days using it and getting it set up and making sure everything worked. I like this so much it's now on my wish list for ME.

My first dilemma is whether to call this a notebook or a netbook because of the processor being more similar to what is found in a netbook. It's like a netbook processor-wise, but larger like a notebook.

Build-quality seems to be very good to excellent my only complaint is the CD/DVD drawer seems flimsy when opening/closing, but I am very careful with it. Even while closed, this note/netbook looks good with the dark espresso brown exterior and a lot of it seems to be made of aluminum. It's lightweight (under 6 lbs. with the battery installed), and has a power-saving feature so the 6 cell battery gets pretty close to 5 hours of battery life like the specifications state. The touch-pad is very responsive, although I prefer using a mouse. There are 3 USB 2.0 ports.

Even though the 1.6 GHz speed is on the slow side (after all this is a fairly inexpensive PC) having 4 GB of RAM is more than enough for internet, Word and Excel functions, email, and it has better graphics than my smaller netbook has. In addition, this has an internal DVD drive, unlike my Asus Netbook. For just a little more money over what you'd spend on the 10" model, you get it all with this.

Asus puts a lot of bloatware on this, which is easily uninstalled. Set-up was very easy and this comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, in addition to Microsoft Word and Excel which are NOT trial versions they are full-featured but you do have to put up with some small ads to use Word and Excel. It also comes with 6 months of TrendMicro anti-virus, which I uninstalled and went with Avast Free instead.

Asus has included Altec Lansing stereo speakers but like all other notebook speakers, these are average and could use more power, but sound much better than my smaller netbook's speakers.

Comes with chiclet keyboard, wireless 802.11 b/g/n, 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, 1 VGA port, 1 DVI port, microphone jack, headphone jack, RJ45 LAN jack and even a HDMI port so this can be attached to your HDTV.

The keyboard also has the 10-key numeric keypad to the right, like full size keyboards have.

CON: My only complaint is the web cam, being 0.3 MP, it has bad video quality. It's good enough to see the person when you're Skypeing, but I sure wouldn't make a YouTube video using it. But since I/we were looking for a budget full-size computer and even though the 0.3 MP web cam doesn't quite cut it for me, it's good enough since I already know what my brother looks like. It is what it is, and if you're looking for a high def web cam, either don't choose this computer or add an external cam.

Worth more than it costs, faster than I expected, is very friendly and so the need is perfect! good cost product

I hesitated buying this because I had a problem finding reviews. But I bought it any way because the price was good. I'm really glad I did. I use this as a 2nd computer for when I go to the lake on weekends so I only use it for word processing, photo editing, watch DVDs, etc. This notebook is perfect for my needs. Love the keyboard and the screen. Downloading movies is easy and look great. Very nice viewing area for a notebook. I will upgrade to 8 GB of memory for the photo editing, but other than that I love it. I do agree with the 1st review about the DVD drive. Touch pad is real sensitive buttons are a bit loud when clicked, but I prefer a mouse, so not an issue for me. It's really a beautiful notebook. Love the mocha color.

It is so slow with so many problems. The screen is often becoming furry and stretched if I use it to do scanning. It takes about 10 times longer to boot up to compare with my old ones. I could not type to search after using it to shop online. The list can go on for more that I have wanted to drop on a hard floor to destroy it for so many times.

Acer Aspire V5-531P-4129 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptop

Acer Aspire V5-531P-4129 15.6-Inch Touchscreen Laptopoverall, the computer was good, just as described. light in weight and sleek look. Lighted keyboard and other features that make it look a worthy computer for the price especially. only setback is with Operating system windows 8, It became really had for my parents to adopt to the new homescreen as opposed to desktop and start menu in the previous windows versions. applications provided are only microsoft based. one cannot load a yahoo application based on another browser like chrome. then there is the issue of closing the windows. the x on the top right which windows users are used to is gone. closing different tabs and open windows is a nightmare. i found myself closing running applications through the task manager.

otherwise, the hardware is recommendable.

ill be more than happy if i can be upgraded to the newly released windows 8.1 which solves most of this issues.

you won't find a better 15.6" touchscreen for ~$500. Three usb ports, HDMI port, internal DVD, 500+ GB HDD, backlit keyboard there's a long list of great stuff. it's fast, quiet, and doesn't put out much heat (no Dell thigh-burn here). i bought this for work and liked it so much after a few weeks that i bought another one for my family. expect maybe 3hrs on the battery. meh but that's the market reality.

only real peeve is the physical spacebar response on the keyboard can be erratic when typing fast it cangetannoying. also the trackpad is very sensitive. it can pick up a contact from your hands/thumbs pretty easily while typing and unintentionally move your cursor downscreen mid-sentence super annoying. basically, be mindful of your hand position while you type and be extra assertive with the spacebar.

overall though this is a great buy for work, school & general family use.

Acer Notebook NX.V7PAA.013;TMB113-E-4808 11.6-Inch Laptop

Acer Notebook NX.V7PAA.013;TMB113-E-4808 11.6-Inch LaptopThe laptop is fine, reasonable speed, battery life etc. The 6-cell battery is severely protruding at the back, something that is not shown on Acer or Amazon pics. The battery tilts the laptop by an inch which is weird to use on your lap.

Better options out there:

For about $400: 13 inch Dell Inspiron 13z or refurbished laptops (Toshiba Portege R835).

For about $550: 13 inch ultraportables with a touchscreen Lenovo u310 or Sony Vaio.

Lenovo T410S Networked Attached Storage (25003BU)

Lenovo T410S Networked Attached StorageI purchased this laptop with the touchscreen option plus the 128GB SSD drive. It came with 4GB which I later upgraded to 8GB. In short, this is a light laptop with superb performance but at a price. The hand rest area to the right or left of the touchpad can and will crack. I sent my machine into to Lenovo because the touchscreen wasn't working properly and it came back cracked. Additionally it developed a crack under the monitor.

I would forgo this product for an HP, Sony or Apple because they offer products of similar weight with more astute customer care. My wife has an X201 and it is smaller with 12.1 inch screen. If you going light consider it or get the T410 which is heaver but not as thin.

As an Amazon fan, I think Amazon is much better at customer service then the service I received from Lenovo but I just want to let my fellow Amazon members know that this shell is fragile and I never had any case on any laptop ever crack when no pressure was put on the machine.

Pros: Fast, SSD is up instantaneous, Good for photography

Cons; External frame is fragile

Just disappointed in a product that could have so much potential.

Dell Inspiron i17R-2895PNK 17-Inch Laptop (Pink)

Dell Inspiron i17R-2895PNK 17-Inch LaptopThese are my impressions after using this Dell Inspiron 5720 laptop for a week:

The Intel i7 3rd gen. CPU is very fast and a pleasure to see in action. All of my Windows 7 applications are accomplished in record time. The Intel Graphics 4000 HD can keep up with any game I've loaded with ease. The Intel WiDi system sends HD audio and video to my 42 inch LCD TV via a Netgear PUSH2TV HD PTV2000 1080P Adapter for Wireless Display. Movies played on this laptop through the WiDi system are DVD quality. The Bluetooth on this laptop connects to my wireless stereo headphones with great range throughout an over 1000 sq ft multi-room structure. The Windows Experience Index is as follows: 7.5, 7.8, 6.5, 6.5, and the lowest disk data transfer rate: 5.9. The laptop's display is large and very clear (1600 x 900.) The 4 USB 3.0 ports are incredibly fast compared to USB 2.0. The sound system on this laptop is amazingly high quality for small speakers, including a small sub-woofer! Using an Inspiron 15R N5110 (Core i5 2nd gen.) as a reference, this laptop operates at a much lower temperature (estimate 50% less heat) so using it as a true "laptop" is very comfortable. The Switch lid system makes it very easy to change the cover; only blue, pink, and grey are available from Dell as of this review.

Please note: As with all new computers I own, I backup the original HDD image via Dell's Backup Software to 3 DVDs then reformat the HDD and install my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and Dell's latest drivers and BIOS update. The above review was completed after I accomplished these actions.

The unit arrived with a defective motherboard and audio issues. Wasted a great deal of time on line with tech rep in India before he concluded the motherboard was defective. In the process he downloaded software which froze-up the computer requiring a restore that wiped out programs and configurations I had spent a great deal of time creating. The local repair service did arrive in 24 hours. However, some type of reconfiguration is needed after the repairs; I have now been advised I will have to waste more of my time with a tech rep because the service tag no longer matches the motherboard. I am having trouble loading many sites. The computer freezes and won't allow scrolling on about one site-in-three. The optical drive supplied with the unit is less than flimsy. I am having issues with the apostrophe key which alternately does not work or types two apostrophes. ''' Poor quality control is evident with this product. Sorry I bought it.

SupplementThe keyboard and motherboard have now failed a few hours after this review. Spent an hour on-line with India again and a repair tech is coming out. Dell should replace this junk

2nd supplement-This 8-day old computer got it's 3rd motherboard and a new keyboard today. The repairs did not fix the scrolling or typing problems. Dell agreed to ship me a new unit. However, this will be the 3rd time I have to configure and network one of these units and download my programs. I will have 25-30 hours of time wasted on the phone, with techs at my house and setting up a unit. Mere replacement fails to properly compensate a customer. Next time I will buy at Walmart where they take defective computer returns no questions asked.

The replacemet arrived yesterday. It has a dead pixel near the center of the screen which is annoying in a "new" unit. Can't tell if this one is new or reconditioned. The condition of the clear plastic keyboard protector hints at the latter. It works better than the old one but still has a scrolling freeze problem on the internet intermittantly. JCW

I'm not one to take the time to review many of my purchases, this has been such a nightmare that I must warn all other potential buyers. I've had the laptop for about a year now,

within the first month, usb ports did not work, i called dell they wanted me to mail them the laptop back for repair and they would return it within 2 weeks, I'm a wealth manager and use this laptop for work, i spoke with their supervisor and was able to get a tech to come to my office to fix it.

they had to replace the whole motherboard not just usb ports. after repair, within a week, modem and other components did not work. i called them again, they ended up sending me a whole new laptop, i had to spend the time to transfer all my data to the new laptop. The new laptop usb ports also did not work. I called them again and gave up on the repair, i can handle having some faulty usb ports, sometimes it doesn't recognize my dvd/r drive, good thing i don't use it for work.

a couple months ago, i started having some problems with the typing cursor, as I'm typing it jumps around and automatically jumps to a different part of the screen making it difficult to type full sentences.

I bought this thing from Fry's on sale, the salesperson even told me not to buy it, he recommended lenovos or asus laptops instead, i didn't listen thinking he was just incented to sell the products. I used to trust dell because their desktops are reliable, not the case with the laptops. Save yourselves major headaches and go with a different brand.

Acer Aspire V5-171-9661 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silky Silver)

Acer Aspire V5-171-9661 11.6-Inch LaptopTo start, I own a lot of Acer products. Every year or so, I tend to inch along in my needs and feelings for laptops. Prior to purchasing this, I had an 10" Acer Aspire One netbook which I was thrilled about and a 14" Acer Aspire Timeline. I was hoping that this machine would sort of be the bridge between the things that I really liked about a Netbook (light, good battery life, very portable, and low heat) and the performance of my more beefy laptop (higher resolution, better video performance, etc).

I have to say that in many ways this meets my needs and in some others it didn't quite live up to my expectations. To start with, though, I will first say that I am pleased with this notebook, overall. I am not going to blame the product for having Windows 8 which is at times obnoxious and counter-intuitive because the product description clearly says it comes with windows 8. Some people are not going to like it though. I'd suggest you try to navigate around Windows 8 sometime with a mouse in a store if you want a feel for the experience. Everyone's going to differ on whether they think this is one step forward and two back, or the other way around. What I will say is, for what Windows 8 is, this thing flies through it and it displays everything in a slick manner.

This has had no problems running Netflix, not that you would expect it to. It can do all your normal computing, and the easy app stuff they seem to be trying to turn windows into. On top of that, this isn't a great system to play games on, but it can run the games that I have played with respectable stability. I routinely play World of Tanks on mine with middle-of-the-road type graphics, and I'm very satisfied with the mid-20's to mid-30's frames per second. If you pump it as high as it goes (or as high as it lets you) you will see the frame rate drop though to a humanly noticeable level. The same can be said for Skyrim.

Some of the things that aren't measured in the specs that you might want to be aware of. This can get rather hot. If you are doing anything complicated, this could be come a 'not-on-my-lap laptop.' If you're just playing with the internet, it usually seems to be fine. If, like I mentioned above, you're playing a game, definitely set it down somewhere else. Also, this is the first Acer that I've purchased where the sound that comes with the computer is noticeably bad. The speakers that are in this sound tinny and hollow. If you are planning on playing music, this would probably force you to headphones or a separate speaker system. I carry around an 'X-Mini II Capsule Speaker,' which is quite nice for what it is, so I can plug that in if I need pretty or more noises for whatever reason.

I needed to replace my work notebook; I had previously purchased an Acer Timeline X series in the same 11.6" form factor and it has done fairly well throughout its two-year run with me around the world (literally) other than a few niggling problems.

I had a budget of about $1,500, so I was considering the Asus Zenbook Prime in the same form factor, but I couldn't find one with the 256GB SSD. Moreover, it didn't have a full-sized SD card slot and didn't come with the old-school VGA port (this was important because many of the customers I visit do not have projectors with HDMI inputs). I finally decided that for the price, I would buy the Acer V5 because it had the same processor (Ivy bridge Core i7) and double the RAM of the Asus (8GB vs. 4GB).

It seems that the minor problems with the last notebook have been addressed and it is exceedingly fast. The only complaint is that I'm still adapting to the touchpad with integrated buttons as my last one had dedicated buttons. However, with the money I saved, I decided to buy a 256GB SSD for the computer (be sure to get one that is 7mm high most of them are 9mm and will not fit inside the chassis) and used Acronis True Image to clone the drive...wow. Screaming fast performance that takes about 15 seconds to go from completely powered off to booted and about 4 seconds to go from sleep to booted. Apps open almost instantaneously...and I still have about $500 left in the budget to buy more stuff!

A quick word to those of you that put an SSD in the device using Acronis: I used a USB enclosure to turn the SSD drive into a flash drive in order to do the cloning. I spent a couple of hours trying to clone and the only way it worked for me was when I created a bootable flash drive with Acronis and then changed the BIOS's settings from UEFI to LegacyBoot (otherwise the BIOS won't let you boot to Acronis' Linux image). The cloning takes about an hour and then you can swap the HDD and SSD. Once you swap the drives, you need to change the BIOS back to UEFI or it won't boot Windows 8. Good luck!

Just got the machine on clearence. It seems like a nice machine. The mouse pad is a bit unresponsive. I had to turn the touch pad sensitivity up to full to get reasonable performance.

Windows 8: Wow, what an impressively hard to use operating system. I really hate Windows 8. As an engineer, I really did not think it would be that bad moving to Windows 8, that it would just take some getting used to. I am considering dropping back to W7 until the new W8 comes out that includes changes due to "user feedback". I hope they do that big time or its time to switch to MAC or Unix. It would be really nice if w8 came with a built in w7 fallback option.

I went to upgrade the hardrive and could not find how to get to the hard drive/memory. The bottom of the machine has a single, very large flat panel. All I had to do was to remove the one visiable screw near the front center and slide the panel off to the front. Very nice! Remove the battery before doing this just to be safe.

I found I could not upgrade the hard drive on this machine. A normal laptop drive is ~9.5mm thick. Some of the older drives are 12mm thick. I got a new 9.5mm 1TB drive (which is thin for a 1 TB drive) and found that it was too thick for the panel to fit properly back on the machine. It turns out that the WD 500 GB drive used in this machine (WD5000LPVX)is abnormally thin (6.5mm?), most likely specifically designed for thin ultrabook type laptops. Higher capacity drives just will not fit at this point in time. All I can say is that if you want to upgrade to an SSD, check the thickness first.

The battery uses an odd "slide lock" near the back. It was not clear to me that this was a slide and that it was for the battery.

Dan

Want Acer Aspire V5-171-9661 11.6-Inch Laptop (Silky Silver) Discount?

My V5-171-9661 would have been a great laptop, had it not suffered from the two following major issues:

1) It delivers only SATA2 (3Gb/s max) speed with Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD (~250MB/s reads). The laptop has the latest BIOS v2.15 in AHCI mode and the latest Intel Rapid Storage drivers. Both Intel RST tool and Samsung SSD Magician tool report SATA2, while the laptop's HM77 chipset is known to be SATA3-capable (6Gb/s). The same Samsung SSD used to deliver ~520MB/s with my old Lenovo SATA3-capable system. Now I'm not sure if it's only this specific machine, or the whole line of V5-171-9661 is affected. I'd appreciate if someone with the same model + SATA3 SSD could post his/her results.

2) The laptop came with Absolute Software Computrace/LoJack feature pre-activated. The BIOS doesn't have any settings to turn it off or even see check its status at all. It survives the hard drive swap, complete OS reinstall and keeps creating a set of executable files (rpcnet*.exe, rpcnet*.dll) in system folders. Basically, it is a kind of controversial BIOS rootkit, which seamlessly reports your laptop location (along with other demographics) to Absolute's servers. I have no plans to subscribe to Absolute's services and I don't want my laptop to call any 3rd party without my explicit consent. So far I've been unable to find a way to disable or kill Computrace. I contacted both Acer and Absolute and I am still waiting to hear from them. However, from what I googled on that matter, the chances to get rid of this "feature" appear to be less than zero. Again, my old Lenovo also had this feature in BIOS, but it arrived in inactive state, and I was able to disable it permanently in BIOS.

Two stars taken off.

eMachines E725-4520 Laptop Win7 Pentium T4400 2.2G 15.6″ 3GB Ram 250GB WiFi 6-cell battery D

eMachines E725-4520 Laptop Win7 Pentium T4400 2.2G 15.6″ 3GB Ram 250GB WiFi 6-cell battery DVD-super Multi DL Drive GMA 4500MI bought this about two weeks ago when it was on sale for under three hundred bucks. I have been using a Macbook Pro for the last 4 years, which is great but which is also my wife's computer. With the kids and I also trying to use her computer I figured it was time to pony up for a second laptop.

Pluses:

1. Price

2. functions just fine for internet, watching DVDs, You Tube, Itunes, etc. no noticable difference in quality of images or streaming from my high end Mac.

3. Costs less than a netbook, has a dvd player/recorder.

4. Battery life is actually very good 4+ hours so far for regular surfing. video knows it down to about 3 hours.

Fairly solid feel to it for being a hunk of plastic

Back has all sorts of access panels for people that want to change out the hard drive or add more RAM

My Age of Mythology game works just fine on it.

Minuses:

#1 gripe no HDMI port. Bummer. HAs some cheesy aavi port but I haven't bothered to figure out if I can convert that to HDMI. Whoops on their part, but then agin, this thing cost me less than most netbooks.

Speakers are lousy. If you mess with the EQ and SRS Wow you can get it to an aceptable level, but out of the box they sound like they are tin cans. Fine with headphones.

Keyboard is okay does not have a high quality feel to it. easier to type mistakes than on my Mac.

Windows 7 is...... nothing more than XP with a couple of the bugs fixed and an interface that makes it harder to find things if you are used to XP or 2000.

Boot of programs is a bit slow. I think this could be a WIndows issue more than a hardware issue.

Ovberall works just fine for a cheap laptop. don't need to pay twice as much if all you do is surf the net and watch TV on it.

There was a certain retailer who was selling this eMachines laptop for just under $300, and at that price, this laptop is an excellent deal. Much above that price and you should probably look elsewhere.

As others have said, the display is excellent very bright. The keyboard is OK not great, a bit "spongy" but not bad. The speakers are awful, perhaps the worst I've ever heard; attaching a pair of cheap USB-powered speakers makes a big difference when you use it at home.

The CPU is a standard 2.2GHZ Pentium (Dual Core) T4400, which is a sweet budget CPU (a budget version of the now-being-phased-out Core 2 Duo CPU). It's actually quite a fast CPU for basic stuff. The thing DOES NOT get hot (compare that to the AMD-based laptops) beyond a little warm on the bottom.

The two biggest downsides (beyond the speakers): only two USB ports and no webcam (even the Acer version of this laptop that has a webcam curiously has no built-in microphone). So as I said, for the price I paid, I can put up with it.

One little annoyance I've noticed lately: The touchpad is a bit wider than I'm used to, and I seem to rub the left side of the touchpad with my left hand too often, causing the mouse pointer to jump. This seems like a curious design feature of this particular model; when typing on other 15.6" laptops of this same era, I don't have this problem.

RAM is DDR3 despite what official specs say. Easy to upgrade. The wireless card is easy to upgrade as well you can upgrade it to an Intel 5100 "Draft-N" card that is an excellent wireless card for $10-$15 on ebay, very worth doing. You can use either a half-height or full-height mini-PCI wireless card in the slot, I've used both. SATA hard drive is easy to swap as well I've already done that.

You can run XP on this thing too if you really want to but you must first upgrade the BIOS to at least 3.06 (so you have to boot up Windows 7 for that most likely). Then you have to set the BIOS SATA option to "IDE" not "AHCI" and then XP can boot easily (you'll need drivers from Acer on the Emachines support page for this laptop). I did have trouble with Acer's supplied XP driver for the included Broadcom wireless card it froze the laptop every time I enabled the card, but as I have since replaced the Broadcom card with an Intel card, I have no problems with wireless in either Windows 7 or XP.

inexpensive for its power and speed. good looking. large brilliant screen with wonderful colors.

key board and internal speakers are an issue. poor speakers and a poor keyboard.

buyers may wish to experiment with external speakers and external keyboard if you are going to be using the keyboard a lot for text entry.

the computer itself is quite powerful for its cost, no heat, no noise, no processor or fan noise or vibration.

looks to be solid build. not the lightest laptop, but solidly built.also WIN 7 does have some glitches related to compatibility and proprietary issues with other Microsoft software,

Microsoft and WIN 7 does not like Google Chrome, for example, some issues with MS software downloads with Chrome, with Win 7. however,

XP computers are hard to get now unfortunately.

if you need to do serious text entry and require a really good keyboard, I would suggest that you spend some time with this keyboard before buying this computer. make sure it will work for you.

do not buy it sight unseen and untested. if the keyboard and internal speakers are not important to you, this laptop might work for you.

despite this laptops high processor power for the price, and other good points, IF you require an excellent keyboard and/or speakers with normal volume, I would not recommend this laptop.

I love this laptop!! I am self employed and i am able to use it for work and play.. it has never failed me.. it is durable and has even survived a couple of fumbles.. (accidental drops)

it has great speed and graphics.. its a great buy!! my only complaint is that the speakers worked great at first and then a few months later they were not as loud but thats not a major issue for me because i have mini speakers that i use when im not traveling.. Im not sure if thats an issue that others have experienced or if its just mine. i recommend this laptop to students and small business owners especially, but its great for anyone who wants quality without spending a fortune...

Apple MacBook 13" Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz, 2GB, 120 Gb Hard Drive, Wi-fi, Camera, Mac Os 10.6 Snow L

Apple MacBook 13' Intel Core Duo 1.83GHz, 2GB, 120 Gb Hard Drive, Wi-fi, Camera, Mac Os 10.6 Snow Leopard and Ilifegreat price, great product! it's like brand new. i had this same computer back in 2008, then upgraded to macbook pro. when my macbook pro broke, i was broke, so i bought a used macbook. love it!

The MacBook is functional, however, there are still a few areas I need to repair (I'm not sure if it's the AC adapter or the battery that needs to be replaced). And I probably need a new fan for it as well. Other than that, it is really good computer and I got what I paid for.

HP 2000-350US Notebook PC - Gray

HP 2000-350US Notebook PC - GrayNeeded a $400-laptop as a present for my grandfather-in-law. Nothing fancy, just 15" screen, keyboard, and decent speakers. I wanted to avoid AMD-powered laptops. This one seemed to fit the bill, and it works fine. It's fairly light, sub-6 lb. The screen is plenty bright, the keyboard layout is standard, mousepad is comfortable. The battery lasts a couple of hours, at least, I didn't time it. There is enough RAM for any basic office task, and the dual-core CPU is plenty fast for the same tasks.

It comes preloaded with a lot of crapware, but if you burn a set of recovery DVDs (there is HP Recovery Manager installed but note that it only allows you to burn ONE copy DVD, DVD-DL, or USB Flash) you can restore the system with minimal software and drivers which gives you just plain old Windows 7 install with drivers and minimal HP software. The laptop works just fine, and for what it is, you can't be too picky it's a cheap plastic budget box that's not too fast, and not too flashy, but works fine. Oh, and the built-in Altec Lansing speakers are great!

Windows 7 performance score 4.6

processor 5.9

RAM 5.9

Graphics 4.6

Gaming 5.5

Hard disk: 5.9

Only couple of design issues: the laptop lid has a very sharp edge, I can even foresee someone cutting hands on it. Also, for the same reason, the laptop lid is difficult to open.

And finally: on Amazon front page, go to Computers and Laptops, and search for 15" laptops with 4GB of RAM, under $500, with Intel Pentium CPU. At the time of writing this, there were only 7 results, and only a couple laptops for $400 this one, and an Asus with full keyboard (normal + numeric). I liked this one better.

I purchased this laptop in Dec. 2011 and it has stopped working. The power light is on, but the screen is black. Does not boot. There are no HP service centers who will honor the warranty so it has to be sent back to HP. I'm guessing I'll be without my laptop for over two weeks. Very unhappy.

This is a good laptop for the money... I run Photoshop and Word applications all at once and still keeps chugging. But it has one major flaw, poor connectivity. It will have trouble connecting for no reason, even with a great signal. Web pages time out continually. It's very frustrating. But besides that, it's a great laptop for the money.

Very disappointed. Check the internet for the MANY complaints about this model. I should have. (due diligence, caveat emptor, etc.) If you buy this product, you WILL NEED the extended service warranty. BTW, HP has discontinued this product...hmmm, wonder why?

I had the same experience as another reviewer. Bought this in Dec. 2011. It worked great for 4 months then the screen went black. It turns on but nothing on the screen. They diagnosed it as a mother board problem. It has to be sent back to HP to be fixed. We needed it for a vacation that leave on in two days and now we're just out of luck. I had hoped that buying HP would be a good choice. Wrong again.

I purchased this used computer for my daughter, so unfortunately I was not able to visually look at this product. For the MOST part, my daughter likes the overall look, however, we were NOT informed that the battery life was close to DEAD. When she charged it to it's full capacity, which was only about a quarter of the way, she noticed that is registered REPLACE BATTERY SOON! How's that for POOR ADVERTISEMENT.

This is the first time I've had any issues on purchasing a product from AMAZON. Needless to say, this won't stop me from doing business with AMAZON, but it will however, make me more cautious of where AMAZON picks it's products from.

Compaq Presario 2105US Laptop (1.53 GHz Athlon XP 1800+, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive)

Compaq Presario 2105US LaptopThe laptop looks very nice and well designed. The colot scheme with silver/carbon black is great. The keyboard is well laid out. The fan isn't noisy and mobile Athlon is great!

Battery life is in excess of 3 hrs and laptop doesn't get hot either. The LCD is good and has good range of viewing angle. The warranty support from Compaq is better than HP, atlhough both are same companies now. If you want blue scheme instead of silver try the HP ZE4200 series and its same hardware as Compaq.

The prices are low in most local stores than Amazon. Kudos to HP/Compaq for designing such low cost and fully functional laptop.

I purchased this laptop to use as a portable version of my desktop, and I have to say I am impressed. I can't explain the others who posted their opinions, but I would encourage you to read some of their other "reviews". To start with I have had absolutley no problem running any software or playing any DVD movies. I'm not sure what the others tried to run, but legal (non-warez) software has run great. The performance-to-dollar ratio is great!

This notebook feels very comfortable to use. The keyboard takes a little getting used to, but then again most notebook keyboards do. As for as looks, well it looks like an HPaq notebook. Nothing fancy but not terrible. There are plenty of ports to connect peripherals to, and the screen looks great.

There were some disappointing aspects too. The first was the omission of a floppy drive. While this is not a show-stopper, it is a consideration if you are "floppy dependent". The shared video has never been a faavorite of mine, but it handles DVD's with no dropped frames. Last is the slow CD burner. Using an 8x8x24 burner is a definate drawback to me. There is no reason to use such an antiquated drive when a 24x would have only cost a little more.

Overall, this is a great notebook for the price. If you are looking for a total desktop replacement, you will be disappointed. However, as a sometimes mobile work machine, with a little fun in between this one's great.

Buy Compaq Presario 2105US Laptop (1.53 GHz Athlon XP 1800+, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive) Now

I bought this laptop off of eBay new in factory sealed box. I got it for about $750, which is a heck of a deal. Opened it up and everything booted fine. In a few seconds, I had it up and running XP Home.

This laptop has 512MB DDR (64MB DDR shared video memory) and a 40GB hard drive, which are practically top of the line. 512MB DDR is going to make XP run very fast. This laptop is actually faster than my desktop PC which has a XP 2000+/256MB DDR.

The 14.1" XGA display is gorgeous. It is crisp and very easy on the eyes, plus it has beautiful colors. It may not be a 15", but being smaller, it will save on your battery life.

Performance is awesome, the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive is sweet, battery life is great, and everything is awesome! This laptop is great for you road warriors, since it gets around 3 hours (for real) of battery life, runs very cool, and is rather compact and thin. Everything works great!

The Athlon XP-M processor is also going to save you battery life and heat over the Pentium 4-M. AMD has PowerNow! technology, which automatically controls the processor speed in relation to its usage. It can adjust the speed from ~500mhz-1.53ghz. Intel's SpeedStep technology can only operate at two speeds: full-conk and too slow. The XP-M also runs much more cooler than the P4-M. If you notice, the P4-M Presario laptops are much thicker than the XP-M ones. This is due to the P4-M's requirement for extra cooling, which means more heat and more noise.

The graphics are ATi IGP320M, which uses the mobility Radeon 7000. It can use up to 128MB DDR shared memory, but 64MB is standard. The graphics are excellent for DX8/DX8.1 gaming (GeForce2 MX performance level), and run every game I have tried so far. The drivers are awesome, and I have not come across any incompatibilities. I even use this laptop for AutoCAD 2004 and 3D Studio Max R5, which are very intensive design programs, and it breezes through all of the applications.

The exterior of the laptop is also pretty hardy. The plastic seems tough enough for heavy use, and everything is built sturdily. This thing is built like a tank, and it looks very, very cool.

Also, Compaq tech support is excellent, and I have not had any trouble contacting them or finding solutions to problems. They are very knowledgeable and professional in their work. Excellent people I may say!

Compaq made an excellent notebook that balances price, mobility, and performance all in one. If you are considering the Compaq Presario 2100 AMD Athlon XP-M laptop, go for it.

In the market for a top-of-the-line laptop at a great price? Look no further. Compaq continues setting industry standards in desktops and laptops. I purchased my 2105 about a year ago, and I have loved it ever since. It is super fast, with amazing features such as Windows XP (the best Windows yet), easy-to-understand ports, and an awesome screen. Forget what you know about Pentium processors...AMD Athlon is superb! Whether you're always on-the-go, or you just need a super fast computer for your desk...the Compaq Presario 2105 is for you.

I've owned this laptop for about a month now, and am very impressed. The extra memory and large hard drive make it a bargain if you hunt around for the best price ...The CD burner isn't fast, but for personal use I don't think it makes a lot of difference. Plays DVDs with no problems whatever. And, by the way, in the box I found a coupon to get a USB floppy drive free after rebate from HPshopping.com (expires in early June). No complaints here!

Toshiba Tecra R840-S8420 14" Notebook PC

Toshiba Tecra R840-S8420 14' Notebook PCI have several different laptops I use for various purposes, including HP, Lenovo and Asus. Unfortunately, I got this Toshiba Tecra foisted on me by my employer. Otherwise, I'd have returned it to the store with all haste. It totally sucks. The keyboard is so unresponsive that you have to literally bang on the keys in order to type. The keys are very flat and slick, making it even more difficult to type with any accuracy. The pointing stick button is so tiny and covered with such a course material that it makes your finger sore to use it for any length of time. The mouse buttons are extremely stiff, it's impossible to just tap like I do with the HP and Lenovo (takes two fingers and press HARD). The touch pad is so squirrely, even after adjustment, that it's difficult to use with any accuracy. Hopefully, sound isn't a requirement for you because the sound on this thing is reminiscent of transistor radio. Don't get me started on the graphics. The only thing positive I can say about this laptop is that it's wicked fast. Starts up in seconds. Performs tasks quickly. I wonder if my employer would believe the dog at my laptop... I'd buy a dog just to get rid of this thing.

Definitely this laptop continues with the traditional prestige of Toshiba, quick your environment is friendly, the design is very good.

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5280 Laptop, Intel Core i3 4GB / 640HD / Webcam

Toshiba Satellite L755-S5280 Laptop, Intel Core i3 4GB / 640HD / Webcamtoshiba L755-S5280 is a very good laptop. Did every thing I expected. A few functional improvements could be implemented. I would prefer the touch pad be centered on the case rather than centered over the typing keyboard. Positioned to the left as it is, there is not a comfortable place to rest my left wrist while using the touchpad or typing. Also, it would be a great improvement if the touch pad scrolling feature could be turned off. While using programs such as excel, I often accidentily hit the scroll feature and the file screen jumps. Other wise a very reliable unit

ASUS K52F-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)

ASUS K52F-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment LaptopI searched around for a long time trying to find a good balanced notebook/laptop. I chose this ASUS because of its look and features--it is a gift for my wife. I wanted to give her something that would be up-to-date and provide her with rich features and elegant look...this K52F-A1 provides that! Though I am the one that set it up after receiving it--I let her unpackage it and do all the basic setup--by updating the Windows 7 Update, she loves this laptop. I could tell by the look in her face she was very pleased with the gift. It has good clean crisp look, the screen has amazing clarity. The keyboard is smooth, easy to use, with all the keys easy to touch. Each key has the appropriate amount of space between each key. My wife commented that it was very light weight, not the heavy laptop that it looks to be. She loved that it is light. After taking the laptop into my hands, I could see why she stated that...it is very light, though it looks heavier because of the sturdy construction. Very sturdy and strong. I like the matted look & feel of the palm rest and the touchpad. This is a great product with rich features (Core i3, 4Gb DDR3, 320Gb HD, etc.) for the price! It doesn't have everything I want in a laptop, but for anyone needing top-of-the-line with a budget, it is an excellent choice. Which is why I give it 5-stars. I am very pleased I chose this and that Amazon.com provided great service; arrived on time, strong packaging, and just all great service. Thanks Amazon.com!ASUS K52F-A1 15.6-Inch Versatile Entertainment Laptop (Dark Brown)

I purchased an Asus K52F toward the end of November of last year. It was a speedy machine that ran great, for a while. I eventually started having trouble with the WiFi card, but that issue was resolved by installing a fresh driver.

I was perfectly satisfied with my K52F up until about three weeks ago. Around that time, I noticed a catch in the hinge area whenever I opened it up. Eventually, said hinge broke completely in half and the surrounding plastic fell away.

A bit of research revealed that the problem of the breaking hinge is a case flaw that several people had suffered from. According to what I unearthed, the Asus warranty covered this due to it being the fault of the company. The Asus warranty required me to send my computer in (on my own dime) to have them evaluate whether or not the damage was caused by me. The fact that I'd attempted to superglue my computer back together made me apprehensive about doing this, so I got in touch with a local store and got a reasonable quote on fixing it. Unfortunately, while in the store's custody, the LCD screen quit working.

Like I said, the laptop itself ran great; it's just incredibly upsetting that the machine broke after less than a year of use.

Great little computer. Fast, not loaded with too much junk. Happy with everything except the speakers on the computer are beneath it and the volume is low. With that combination, you just can't hear movies or music very well if there is any competing noise at all. I solved the problem by getting little speakers (from Amazon) called Chill Pills, and they inexpensively turned my little ASUS laptop computer into a sound powerhouse. Problem Solved.

I have had this computer just one day, and the performance is perfect for the money you pay, good so far. NO COMPLAINTS

but, there are some weaknesses that i would like to point,

first the keyboard is not the best, the arrow keys are small and hide, and it feels a little cheap, I do prefer a central keyboard without numerical keys.

Asus should work on the keyboard... thanks
