Mostly the computer is a good buy. The problem is Windows 8. There is no media player in Windows 8. There are only a few close buttons available within the app. The START BUTTON is missing. The return to last page button does not work most of the time. You have to create a shutdown button on the desktop. So I would say that WINDOWS7 is superior to Windows8 and that is why I cannot recommend the purchase of this computer.

Bought this refurbished computer for my son for Christmas. Great little computer, and in really good shape. However, we've got it in being serviced for a virus right now, and lo and behold ... it came with no back-up diskettes. No Windows 7 XP diskettes. No diskettes of ANY kind. Computer repairman says it has a pirated software package on it, so that solves the mystery of why it showed up with no diskettes. I am livid. I contacted the seller via email last week to have them send me the back-up diskettes, and they refuse to respond in any way. No return emails, no phone calls, no interest, no care, no concern, and no luck.

BUYER BEWARE!!!! DO NOT BUY FROM THIS SELLER!! Because they are crooks to not only pirate the software in the first place, they are also dishonest in that they refuse to contact me to help make this problem right. I have to go BUY the software, hence another $120-$300 expense.

Shame on this seller.

I bought this product on Black Friday at Best Buy for $499.99. I am glad that I didn't pay the price listed. Overall the computer is great, but there are a few things that bother me. It's a Windows 8 computer, and sometimes when I drag my finger across the touch pad, it sends me back to the previous app that I had open off of the main screen. I can easily get back to what I was doing but it shouldn't happen to begin with. Physically, the black surrounding the screen pops when I move it (like when I am adjusting the screen forward and backwards, I don't just randomly squeeze my computer).

The computer is very fast and it's taken a little bit to get used to since I am going from a Windows 7 to a Windows 8. I haven't figured out how to put Microsoft on the desktop (or any icon on to the desktop) but I am sure I will figure that out sooner or later. The sound on this is great (especially compared to my old Acer computer) and I find myself only having it halfway and it's still a little loud for my taste! I didn't have any trouble setting up wireless or Microsoft Defender (the Windows 8 version of Microsoft Essentials) but Norton did get in the way from setting it up at first. There are a lot of available apps that you can put on the front screen, a lot of them being free!!

I found it strange that all of the function keys are opposite from what I am used to; for example: before I would press F5 and the page would refresh, but now I have to press FN F5 for it to refresh and the other function (the backlit keyboard on and off) is the first function. I hope that makes sense!

The keyboard is easy to type on, and the letters aren't having any problem with sticking. They are soft in a way and it's very comfortable.

I set up my computer so that when I unlock it, I have to swipe my finger on the scanner and I haven't had any problems with that either. It's kind of fun having such a personal computer!

I would suggest this product for someone else.

Cons:

I have owned many HP laptops in my day. It just ends up happening. I do not like that they put in a bunch of HP software that I never use and perpetually gets in my way. Also, the first unit I purchased had some weird glitch where every 65 second the DVD drive would pop open. However, now that I have a working one I like it so much I felt the need to review it. Also, this computer is trying really hard to be an Apple product. It's silver shell and black back lit keyboard echo that of a Macbook. However, it is light and feels like a cheaper version of the apple product. Finally, there is a movement to change the design of the arrow keys so that left and right buttons are full sized but up and down buttons are half sized. I use these buttons all the time and the half sized buttons are annoying.

So enough of the negatives. What are the things that make this a four star product?

1. It is a cheaper product. It costs over 50% less than an apple product. I love the price. And I think for what is paid the laptop offers a lot.

2. Backlit keyboard. It is a perk I have been waiting for. they seems to usually be reserved for ultrabooks. It is nice to see the price point drop on this feature.

3. I am not much of a computer "guts" kind of guy. I just want the computer to do what I want it to. I do not need to know all the inside stuff. I do know that the audio quality is good and I am able to run my PC games well on it without issue. I have heard reviews saying the screen is cheap but I have no complaints. It is higher quality than the laptop it replaced and for that i am grateful. I do not think the average user will feel cheated when it comes to the display quality.

Overall, I just like it. It works well and I feel comfortable using it.

Well I've had this laptop for almost a year now so I decided to review it.

Pros:

Good size, looks nice, I also really like the backlight keyboard. I love being able to just have all the lights off and still be able to see everything perfectly. I also like that there's a whole number keypad. Laptop is fast and don't have problems with loading things or what not. Plenty of ram and memory. Total overkill really i mean 8gb of ram? I would have rather had less gb of storage and have solid state drive, but I wanted a lot of specific things and the laptops with ssd's are mostly ultrabooks and very expensive. It was decent price, I bought it from best buy for 700. Has good sound too

Cons: The fingerprint scanner stoppedd working. It can be quite useful, use it for logging into any website and logging into your computer. Fan stopped working also... but just for a short time like a few days, not sure why but thought i was going to have to return it. The camera is mediocre. Also has bad intigrated graphics. But that is normal for intel In hindsight I should have gotten the amd version of this computer, amd has better graphic support and it was actually 100 bucks cheaper. Anyways that's all I can think of right now. Battery life at the beginning was really good it's okay now. Probably get like

I purchased this computer as a gift after first buying an Asus. After problems with the Asus, this was the first choice for the recipient and they have nothing but praise for this computer. Based on their assessment, I would highly recommend it. Ordering, shipping and packaging were definitely a thumbs up as well.

Apple MacBook Pro ME664LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop with Retina Display (NEWEST VERSION)

I am a first time Apple buyer and I love this machine. It was fast to set up, intuitive features and layout. The Retina Display is crisp and easy to use, the keyboard has a great feel to it, the construction is great, and the machine it self if very responsive. The battery life is actually a little more than 7 hours with the SSD hard drive I average about 7.5 to 8 hours on a normal day.

The only thing to be careful of it the display there are two manufactures for the display, LG and Samsung. The LG display has an image retention problem, while the Samsung display does not. But there is no way to guarantee which machine you are going to get. But Apple will replace the machine if you do get an image retention problem.

SUMMARY: This is a solid computer with a gorgeous display. The integrated solid state memory is incredibly fast, and so far I haven't had a single crash or hang after about a month of usage. If you know you want a Mac laptop, this is the one to get, I think. It's a nice balance of size and power and utility. Consider it a solid desktop replacement with four cores and enough screen real estate (especially in scaled mode) to really get work done. On the other hand, it's not a behemoth like the 17 inch MacBook that, and is very easy to carry.

WHAT'S GREAT (and a few tips):

* High resolution screen. In normal mode, you get crisp letters and pictures, and adequate screen real estate for most tasks. When in scaled mode, you get the equivalent of a 1900x1200 display, great for doing certain tasks like programming or using applications not yet written for the retina display.

* Solid state drive. The integrated solid state drive is amazingly fast, and uses a 6 GB/s SATA connection right on the motherboard. It also allows for the incredibly thin form factor. I'm not sure, but it seems faster than normal solid state drives. The lack of a cabled connection shouldn't matter noticeably, so maybe it's just my imagination. Either way, it's really nice to not have a spinning drive, and liberating to use a laptop without having to constantly worry about how much you're moving the computer and wondering if you're going to damage the drive.

By the way HERE IS HOW TO PICK OUT THE RIGHT SIZE DRIVE: Spend a lot of time figuring out what kinds of things you're going to do, and how much disk space your media will take up, and how those needs are going to grow in the three to four years you own the computer. And then just order the largest drive available. Trust me, you'll thank me later. The integrated solid state drives on these Retina MacBooks can NOT be upgraded later, so it's better to have too much and not need it then have too little and regret it. Even if you never come all that close to filling it, you'll have a faster computer than can do a better job keeping the drive defragmented and you won't ever have to worry about wearing out the solid state drive (they have only so many erase cycles they can handle and this gets exacerbated if you keep the drive close to full and things fragment).

* The OS. This isn't going to matter if you're already a Mac user, but OS X is really starting to hit its stride. I'll be the first to say it was not a great OS for a long time, and was slower and less reliable than Windows. However, it's really come into its own with 10.7 and 10.8. The full screen mode is a great way to reduce screen clutter and the tyranny of resizing and arranging windows, and yet is evolutionary and fits in with existing applications well, unlike the revolutionary and ill-fitting "start screen" of Windows 8. As much as I like what they are trying to do with Windows 8, right now it's a very messy OS that feels like two operating systems competing with each other. The Mac just seems more elegant and well-designed, Windows 8 feels like the middle of an awkward transition.

* It's light. Ridiculously light. If it were any lighter, it would start to feel "cheap".

WHAT'S BAD (and a few rants):

* No power or battery indicators! What the heck is Apple thinking? This is supposed to be a "professional" level computer and they screw us out of a battery or power indicator! These used to be on all MacBook Pros. Is there a level above Pro I don't know about? Sometimes it's nice to know if your computer is off or just asleep, and it's ALWAYS nice to be able to see how much charge the computer has without having to turn it on or wake it up.

* The screen isn't terribly bright. It's generally not a problem, but in a room with bright sunlight, the screen can be hard to see. Evidently the retina MacBooks suffer from the same problem the retina iPads initially did, which was that the pixel density resulted in a screen that transmits much less of the backlight than a standard resolution screen.

* The iSight camera is terrible. They call it upgraded, but I'm not sure what camera is worse than this. It's noisy, has terrible low-light performance, and if it's HD, I'm not sure where they are getting the pixels from. The driver also isn't smart enough to figure out how to expose for a central subject, so if you try to do a video chat near a window, the person on the other end will get a great picture of what's outside of your window, with your pitch black silhouette just there to just add drama, I suppose. Again, what is wrong with Apple that my iPhone has a better camera than my $3000 computer?

All in all, though, I'm very happy with the machine and very glad I purchased it. If they didn't cheese off on some of the components above, it would be an easy five stars.

Purchased through Apple directly to get the corporate discount, since my state charges tax on Amazon purchases anyway. I've had a number of Apple laptops over the years, and (not surprisingly) this one is the best. It is slim, speedy and well constructed. No image retention problems that I've seen. Resolutions at 1440x900, 1680X1050 and 1920X1080 all look fantastic, allowing you to choose between more display space (with a little interface lag) and a standard amount of display space (with no lag). Text is crisp at all resolutions. I noticed at first that the fans were spinning up with some regularity, but since a recent firmware update I haven't noticed them once. To be honest, I just haven't seen the variety of problems mentioned in another review.

I can absolutely recommend this machine to anyone who wants or needs a prosumer level laptop. For home use, a Macbook Air is probably a better bet...its lighter and substantially less expensive. Just don't look at the retina MBP's display, because you WILL want it!

I am a first time Mac user and I must say this machine kicks ass. I mean literally this Mac just leaves even the most flashy ultra books far far behind in the rear view. I have always had a love hate relationship with Apple products. Something like an Average looking guy would feel towards a handsome hunk in school, just wondering how and why females drool over him, what does he have other than a face like a Greek god and hair like strands of gold. But the biggest irony follows when you find out that the hunk is a really nice, fun guy to be with and u become best friends the first time you get to know each other. That is exactly what happened within the first 10 mins after I put this machine on. This mac is my new best friend. And also this is a gift from my wife so this makes it even more special. To the ones who are still trying to make a decision between This model and the one with a 5400 rpm hard drive, I would recommend just spend an extra $300 and get this one with an SSD. This one is an entirely different animal. The transfer speeds are phenomenal and multitasking is just a breeze.

I replace my MacBooks roughly every three years and it has been apparent for a few months now that it needed to be done. This was a big upgrade from my last Mac with a bigger screen and hugely improved functionality.

I spend quite a lot of time on my laptop each day doing various tasks which include reading articles, books and blogs as well as photo editing for my shop and watching movies. I do play a bit of one video game as well. This laptop is amazing. The reduced eyestrain was evident after only a few hours. I find myself wanting to use the laptop over my mini ipad (but once the retina screen is available on that I will get it!).

The detail in watching a very vivid TV show such as Defiance is brilliant. You can see so much more of the background action and it actually made me pause several times to marvel at the surroundings to the plot.

Reading books on this screen is easy and reading articles an being able to click links back and forth without eye strain from changing visuals is fabulous.

The one game that I do play, World of Warcraft, runs smoothly and there is quite a bit more detail in the background. I actually think I might have to turn the graphics down a bit because there seems almost to be too much information for my brain to handle.

The various programs I use are running very smoothly and it was a matter of an hour or so to finalize the update process once I received the laptop and get everything running.

I was a bit surprised to find no DVD drive (didn't actually even think to check this when I purchased) but honestly I watch a DVD movie only rarely and it will be easy enough to purchase a separate drive. The world seems to be moving towards digital download anyway so I'll probably replace most of my DVD collection in time.

Overall I am extremely pleased with my purchase and only wish I had done it sooner.

I just got it few days ago and love it. The guy runs so fast that even better than my other Sony i5. The HDMI turns my 70' LED TV into a giant screen, which is beautiful, as well as the video games. I definitely recommand this one, with such a great price.

I'm not really a "techie" kind of girl but I had a short list of my needs for a new laptop. I really like this Asus and found it more than meets my needs and for a fantastic price (in my opinion anyway). Have had this for about three months. The key board is nice, but the mouse pad has been having some problems being almost too sensitive to movement sometimes.

My main computer before was a netbook and while this much faster, I haven't been thrilled to carry it in a bag to and from work. But what I had before was less than 2 pounds so I did expect this.

Also, this has taken a few knocks and hasn't yet had a problem surviving them. So is great if you want to take it about places.

Not really brown. I received it and thought it was black. The matte finish does not get fingerprints.

3 UBS ports, HDMI, and what I think is a VGA, which will took up to a monitor.

It is a lot of computer for the price.

Overall the computer has been working. The keypad is messed up somehow and jumps around on the page as you type. It's a 32 bit not 64, so the only way to add memory is to upgrade software.

Nice size, fast and sleek, awesome desing, ligth and thin.

CONS:

Exist an uncomfortable warming on the bottom that not leave you work perfectly with the divice directly on your legs its not hot properly but I cant ignore it.

Otherwhise, the material of the keyboard is poor and cheap.

Acer Aspire 5742-6838 15.6' Notebook - Intel Core i5-460M

I got this notebook because I totally torn the last netbook (also an Acer). I bought this mainly because I'm on budget. I need a computer that functions and does everyday task. This computer comes with i5 processor and its fast enough for everything I have to do. The screen size is 15.6,which is good and actually feels lighter than my brother's Toshiba Satellite 14''. There are things I would want Acer to improve, one of them is the speakers. Those speakers are totally horrible, worse than my Acer Aspire One netbook, i think one side is not even working. Of course, the built-in microphone is just as bad as those speakers. Of course, if i have to record anything, I'll use external earphone and microphone. Another thing is the power input, it is located right next to the fan, which is not the ideal place to plug. Acer Aspire One netbook also have the power plug/input at the same spot, which I relate to why I have to replace power adapter so often because power adapter's cord bends easily and plus the heat produce from the fan will eventually cause damage to the adapter's cord. I hope to find no more problems, after all, It's still my first day on it. Overall, I still give it a five for everything because it is a decent computer.

My Acer Aspire3 5742-6838 has a fan (next to the power cord) that runs every 30 seconds or so. I bought this laptop to do hard drive recording, but when the fan comes on it temporarily accesses the registry and uses such a large percentage of the CPU that it constantly interrupts other programs and makes it nearly useless, except for maybe word processing and mail and even hesitates on that. This model has an Intel i5 CPU and 4 gb of RAM. I've scoured the net for a real solution, upgraded the Acer Epower Management, etc. I even tried taking the laptop back to factory defaults to no avail. Next, I stopped unnecessary Windows 7 services, hid Microsoft startups, unchecked the other startups in MSConfig, changed Visual Affects to Adjust for Best Performance, eliminated unnecessary programs, ran Auslogics Defragmenter, CCleaner, removed the Search Index, turned unnecessary Window features off (such as Remote Differential Compression). I've run Windows Memory Diagnostic, Scandisk, System File Scan, but no matter what I do this laptop has been an absolute nightmare. I have been doing desktop support for a living for over a decade and I constantly fix friends computers (12 or 13 since May). I don't know what I was thinking when I bought this piece of crap. (I just wanted something to tide me over until I could purchase a high-end Mac.) Anyway, unless you can come up with a genuine solution to this problem, I'll just have to sell it on eBay and badmouth Acer to the hilt on Amazon.

I love acer computersI had just bought a timelinex that died on me after 3 days, so I purchased this one.

For an i5, this computer is unfortunately a bit sluggishenough so that I went to upgrade the ram right away(it's only 4 out of box). I got the ram and found that (from checking out a few videos) that it is NOT an easy task to install more ram into the computer. The sluggishness was distinct enough for me to return the computer and get something a bit nicer for only a little bit more money.

That being saidI do run a lot of heavy duty programsVB Ultimate, MS Office Suite, Adobe Suite and various developer tools. The average user (games, netflix, and MS Office home) shouldn't have much to complain about with this computer: it's very lightweight for its size, the screen is perfect for basic to intermediate gaming and movie watching, and of coursethe price.

The only big issue most would find with the computer is the speakerit is outright rotten. I'm not the type to listen to music on a computer without headpohnes or external speakers, but almost all audio sounds pretty bad.

I have purchased my 5th Acer Aspire. All of my kids have one and I bought one for my self and wife. They take a lot of abuse and work very well. My kids are in college and use them every day. Get used to it before you rate them.

I had this computer for almost 3 years now. I dont have this model i got the cheaper one that was pentium core and just 320gb of memory with 4gb of ram. On the second day of use it gave me blue screen and i got scare but thankfully was not done it again. The problems I facing know is the constant overheating by even the simple of tasks for example im right now i just have typing in my browser and i can feel heat emitted by the computer on my hands and sometimes it gets so hot that using the touch pad and using the keys in the left corner can be painful while having multiple application open. I tried solving this problem by opening it cleaning the fan but that did nothing and also when it starts getting hot it will start lagging and programs will start crashing what can be really annoying. The speakers sucks so you will need headphones. I can complain since it only cost me $349 at Sam's Club and I quest you what you pay for. Right now I am on the process of looking for a new laptop computer for College since this one is not that portable.

I've had this computer for a few days now and I really like it. The display is very bright (actually had to turn it down at night) and clear. Processing speed is great and the 1gb of dedicated (yes I said dedicated) graphics memory is more than I could ask for from an off the shelf computer. ProtectSmart feature for the hard drive is a nice addition (senses if laptop is being dropped and locks the hard drive).

I just wish that it had a Blu-ray player and integrated Bluetooth that I saw on some lower priced models. See the review at

So far this computer has done everything I have asked of it. One thing of note is to make sure your programs you are going to install are 64bit compatible. I downloaded some demo software and found out it wouldn't work.

NOTE: Windows 8 works fine on this laptop. To install, best to create a Win 8 bootable flash drive. Boot from that, and after formatting the correct partition (be sure to backup data first, if desired), it only takes 9 minutes to go from "Next" to "Personalize" (new install booting for the first time). Yes, only 9 minutes!

How did I even find this computer on Amazon? Navigated to Laptop department, then entered these two words into search box:

Then, because I wanted a great value, limited the results to items from Amazon's warehouse deals. Of the 40 or so laptops that came up, this seemed like the best deal.

As my search words suggest, it has a 7200 hard drive and an hdmi port. For me, both of those features are critical. Considering its impressive specs, which include quad-core and usb 3.0, this laptop is very enticing. Price for a new one is currently $1070, but I snagged a "like new" for a mere $700. The only obvious difference between my laptop and new, is that mine shipped in a generic box.

The only negative so far, and it's minor, is that the power adapter is big.

It's infrequent that I desire to use a computer outside my house, but I want that option. But I don't want portability to diminish my computing power while at home, so this laptop is ideal. It's heavier and bulkier than what's preferred for transport, so if portability is your primary reason for a laptop, then don't get this. But if you want a fast space-saving computer, that you can take outside if needed, this model will please you.

When I received this computer, its original product key sticker had been crossed out with a black X, and a second "Refurbished" product key sticker added. I don't see the point of that, considering that I cleared the X using adhesive remover, so now I have an extra Win 7 activation code! Golly!

This computer looks as great as it operates. There are some hiccups but I put all my computers thru the test! I use them on a high processing level for sound and in studio and live performance. I've tried other computers and nothing still performs like a DELL. HP claims that they have the best in audio and computers for music....don't buy that sales pitch. For the home user, it's great, but in the commercial world using windows, DELL is always the best in performance. I tried two different HP with Beats audio....junk! I needed a computer that could perform under very very very heavy audio AND Video processing requests.....at the same time. Like 4 hours of continuous processing the highest quality video and music AT ONCE. NO HP could match the performance of the dells integrated video processor and the i7 dedicated processor. I've always used DELL and have one that is 7 years old and still our performs other NEW Toshiba's, HP's, Lanovo's....anything. if you need to use windows, DELL is going to be the best built with windows to perform this kind of processing.

I purchased the Dell XPS X15L-3357SLV with Windows 7 right before the release of Windows 8 because I didn't want Windows 8. After receiving my machine, I spent a couple of hours on the phone with the Dell technichians just to get the machine operating, particularly on a wireless basis. I then had to purhcase a software assistance package from Dell because I could not get my homenetwork to work with the new compuer. This involved a call of at least three hours before they finally solved the problem. The next day I called back Dell again because the wireless network was extremely week. After another call of 2 to 3 hours, the technicial determined that there were at least 4 major things wrong with the new laptop. He said he could send a prepare person out within two days, but would also try to get permission to replace the machine since he had never seen so many things go wrong on a new machine. To shorten the story, within a couple of weeks I did get a new machine, a model SPS L521X, but it had Windows 8. The technician said if I didn't want Windows 8 they would send me the disks with Windows 7 to install.

Because of the problems I had previously, the tecnician worked with me on setting up the new laptop. The first day, he spent 2 hours with me. The second day, he spent another 2 hours getting my home network to work. After the call, I determined that I could not change files from one computer to another or create a new file on my laptop and save it to my desktop computer. After a three hour call on the third day, they solved my home network problem.

At this point, even though the conversion to Windows 8 is painful, I have decided I would be better off working with Windows 8 rather than running the risk of starting all over on my home network and trying to install Windows 7.

Now after all of this you are probably wondering how I could give this laptop a 4 star rating. Well once the computer got up and running, I think all aspects of it (i.e., operating speed, screen resolution, build quality) or excellent. I guess I may be too easy, but the discount of only 1 start for all my hours on the phone with the technicians is tempered by the fact that the Dell technicians stuck with me the whole time and followed up a couple times after solving the problem to make sure the computer was working.

This computer is everything I wanted. 8 gb RAM, 1gb dedicated video memory, it is fast, the speakers are great and I haven't had a single problem with it. The backlit keyboard is great too. The only con is that it only comes with a 6-cell battery, but still it is a great item and it is worth every penny.

Be aware that the product seems to have a defect with the left hinge of the screen. There are multiple complaints and it is always the left hinge. other problems are with its cooling fansin less than 1 year of owning it, I had to return it to the service center to be repaired. The laptop would get a fan error and just shut down.

I bought this laptop for just $850 in 2009. Over the last 3+ years, I have taken on trips, meetings, airports, buses and just about everywhere and it still keeps ticking as reliably as ever. I've spilt ice water on it by accident, left it running in the backpack, dropped it a few times onto the floor from the table and couch. Yet, I have never once had a hardware issue, be it faulty screens, touchpad, mic, camera or speakers. I've owned Acers, Dells (ugh), HPs, Compaqs, Macbooks and Toshiba laptops over the last 12 years. This is by far the single best laptop I've owned to date.

The other reviews on the web will complain about this laptop's build quality. That is a fair point, BUT ONLY when comparing it other thinkpads or the macbook. The low price of this laptop means that it does not have the magnesium alloy roll cage and hinges which give Thinkpads their brick like hardness. But when comparing it to any other laptop on the market, the build quality is one cut above. Even with a plastic case, there is no flex on this laptop. You can try to bend it and it won't budge. Even after thousands of openings and closings, the lid hinges snap perfectly shut.

The keyboard is good enough to deserve a review of its own. Many thinkpad users have told me about the awesomeness of a Thinkpad keyboard. I thought it an exagerration until I used this laptop. I am now sold. The Thinkpad Island keyboard is arguably the best laptop keyboard I've ever used and possibly even rivals several desktop keyboards. Unfortunately, Lenovo has recently changed this famous keyboard and replaced it with a chiclet design on newer laptops. While most reviewers don't see this as a problem, Thinkpad diehards still believe that the Island keyboard of old is the best.

There is only one downside with this laptop, as with any Thinkpad. It won't die. After 3+ years, this laptop still looks and works like the day it was bought. The hardware inside has become outdated and while it runs Windows 7 without any issues, I can see it struggling to run future OSes. I have spent about $200 to perform some minor upgrades, by increasing the RAM to 4GB and replacing the hard drive with an SSD. I can see this laptop easily running for another 3 or more years, with occasional formats and OS reinstalls.

Thinkpad diehards will complain about the glossy finish and the recessed ports on this laptop, but both are frankly minor issues, if at all. Highly recommend this laptop or any Thinkpad of a similar size.

I have owned this laptop (SL400) for around 1.5 years. All I can say is the build quality is horrible. I have three main issues with the laptop. The DC port on the laptop is loose and possibly a safety hazard. The LCD left hinge broke, so the LCD was dangling on one hinge (until I fixed it). The keyboard is acting up, some keys I have to press hard to get it to register. I treat my laptops with care and all of my previous laptops never had this many issues after 1.5 years of use. Time to try a different model or maybe even a different brand.

For the benefit of prospective buyers (I'm a frequent Amazon user, but discovered this item after I had ordered it on Ebay), Here's how I got a satisfactory HTPC out of this micro-PC.

I installed 4Gb of ram. Make sure you specify notebook ram, like this:

Add any notebook Sata Hdd; I used a 1Tb sata Hdd to have room to record TV.

Problems:

1. Heat

You'll need to go into the bios (press del at boot time) and find the smart fan settings.

I set it to 3, start temp 40, max speed at 80, slope 3. I am running between 57 65 degrees Celsius. Very little fan noise.

2. Wifi works at about 150Mbs, good enough for most compressed files but annoyingly breaking up on large raw .ts files. Can't watch live TV, it's in .ts format.

3. LAN did not work. After Zotac agreed to RMA which I would have to pay shipping costs, I ordered a USB ethernet adapter from Monoprice for $15. Works like a charm....

Much less hassle....

4. IR Remote basic functions are fine out of the box. However, the colored keys MCE green button, info, text did not work. The external USB IR sensor will not work for the extra keys; only the internal IR sensor will, provided you make the necessary registry changes. Here's the link:So, overall, not very good ZOTAC support, it's a low cost very small special PC; they can't afford to provide too much hand holding. So, for any problem, they'll agree to RMA, but the user is stuck with the shipping costs.

After fiddling with the smart fan settings, I'm quite pleased with the low noise and adequate CPU core temperature.

The wifi adapter is ok for internet browsing but not really sufficient for uncompressed video files. My external USB dapter (which I used until my Monoprice lan adapter arrived) at 300 mps was pretty good, but you really need a hard-wired ethernet connection at 1000mps which the USB ethernet LAN adapter provides.

I do recommend this micro-PC even with it's flaws. I attached it to the back of my kitchen TV, can't hear it (unlike my ASROCK), and it's quite responsive for any use. Uninterrupted 1080i or p, no breakup.

Executive summary: $199 is a great price. Chrome OS is quite an interesting and enjoyable computing environment which serves a wide range of needs (close to all of my family's computer use for sure). The Acer C7's performance is noticeably better than that of the $249 Samsung ARM Chromebook for certain things, notably 720p video and Flash games. Plus, the Acer can be opened up and upgraded, unlike the Samsung. Along with "cheaper" those are basically the only areas in which the Acer beats the Samsung, but those made my decision for me. The major flaws of the Acer C7 are the tiny hard-to-use cursor keys, and the downright horrible speakers; the major flaws of Chrome OS, for me, are local network file access and limited supported media formats. Those are significant problems, but for $199 they are not showstoppers.

I'm quite fond of my Acer C7 Chromebook. The overwhelming feature is the price. $199!

(Edit June 2013: so where can you get it for $199? Not, it seems, at Amazon. Currently Best Buy and apparently Walmart a selling a $199 Acer C7 with a 16GB SSD instead of a 320GB spinning hard drive. That's the Chromebook I wish I had. As I say below, many users will see more benefits from a small fast silent SSD than from a big slow noisy hard drive.)

Chrome OS offers a zero-maintenance solution to having a second computer around for family members who essentially only need a web browser anyway. I've come to really enjoy using it. I enjoy knowing that I will never need to provide much tech support for it.

A potential buyer of the Acer C7 might also be considering the $249 Samsung ARM Chromebook. I think the Samsung Chromebook is substantially more beautiful, has no fan or spinning hard drive, and has a much better keyboard and speaker. However, it is underpowered. At Best Buy I was able to try them side by side. The Acer was able to handle 720p video from YouTube almost (though not quite) perfectly; on the Samsung dropped frames were much more noticeable. I also tried a Flash game, Bloons Tower Defense 5, which I've noticed is surprisingly stressful for my older laptops. It runs fine on the Acer C7, but is very choppy on the Samsung. Finally, it is easy (if potentially warranty-breaking) to expand the RAM on the Acer C7 up to 16GB (!), and even to replace the silly hard drive with an SSD. The Samsung ARM Chromebook is essentially impossible to upgrade. That, for me, was the clincher.

The Acer C7, though not actually ugly, is not a particularly pretty machine. The plastic around the display has a particularly cheap look-and-feel. The hinge at least feels strong. The display itself is reasonably nice, with a decent viewing angle. It's glossy.

I do not like the keyboard. I think overall it's not a great keyboard (especially compared to the Samsung ARM Chromebook which has a lovely pleasant-to-use keyboard). The really awful thing is the cursor keys, which are startlingly small and also scrunched up with the page up and down keys. It is really, really unpleasant to use the cursor keys on this keyboard. There are other oddities, if not real problems. The Enter key is oddly shaped for no apparent reason other than gratuitous ugliness. The keyboard has a Caps Lock key (usually replaced by Search on Chrome OS keyboards), and also a Fn key, the only purpose of which is to have a Wifi-Disable keypress Fn-F11 (did anyone really need that?) and to send function keys over Chrome Remote Desktop (I suppose someone might need that---but I regret having a whole key for it in prime territory). This keyboard puts the Chrome OS Search key down with the Control and Alt keys, which is unusual in Chrome OS devices, but it does work to my benefit as it sends Command to Macs over Chrome Remote Desktop. In case it helps anyone, right-Control also sends Command.

I like the Chrome OS keys for back, forward, refresh, full screen, and next window.

The touchpad is quite a bit more resistant to clicking than I would like. I use tap-to-click instead, but there's no tap-only variant of click-and-drag. (I want the 3-finger drag from Apple.)

I often use this Chromebook attached to an external display (and keyboard and mouse... think of it as a desktop replacement!). When I first posted this review I mentioned some issues with this configuration. A Chrome OS update in mid-February 2013 fully resolved these issues for me. The OS auto-update feature is delightful, by the way, automatic and non-intrusive.

With an external Mac keyboard, Command sends Control, which is great for someone whose hands are used to Mac key shortcuts.

The absolute worst thing about the Acer C7 is the speakers. They are bad. Really, really, bad. They're quiet and tinny and I can hardly stand to listen to them. I'm no audiophile, either---I think almost anyone who uses this machine will cringe a little bit at the sound quality. Was this really necessary to hit this price point? Be prepared to use headphones or external speakers. (And not Bluetooth external speakers... I'm told they are not supported in Chrome OS at all, and this machine doesn't have Bluetooth anyway.)

The fan is audible. Not awful, but this is no silent machine. I can't really tell which sounds are the fan and which are the spinning hard drive.

The Acer C7 comes with a 320GB hard drive. The question here is... why? As far as I can tell the only filesystem access you get is your Downloads folder. Which the OS is allowed to clear at will to free up space! Chrome OS was designed for minimal local storage, and frankly I don't see how this space will ever be that useful. I suppose there's the "load it up with movies before the car trip" argument. I'll probably even do that myself when I go to visit my family this holiday season. But I'd prefer to have a silent, fast, tiny SSD for normal use, and bring my movies on an external hard drive.

I wish it had USB 3.0. Oh well. (Another point in favor of the Samsung ARM Chromebook, there.)

On to software. You can use the Web. You can get a terminal with Control-Alt-T and use ssh (but no real local shell). Chrome Remote Desktop is entirely usable. Google Cloud Print seems to work fine, for those of us who have an always-on computer around anyway. Offline Gmail and Google Docs are great if you sometimes lack internet access. Flash games work fine. Google Hangouts has a dumb name but is a fantastic videoconferencing product (the camera and microphone are fine).

While I'm on Chrome Remote Desktop: You'll want to right-click the app icon to get it to "open as window", because if it opens as a tab Chrome itself will consume keypresses like control-N and control-W instead of sending them to the remote host.

One thing that is lacking is the ability is access network file storage. We have an always-on computer filled with video and audio and I'd like to be able to access those files conveniently. What I've done that's workable is started an FTP server on that machine. But it's not a great interface, and each file has to be downloaded before playing, rather than being streamed. "Sneakernet" via USB drive works fine too of course. I think there is pay software, like TVersity, that will set up a media server for you with a nice HTTP interface, but I haven't tried it. And I wish this was built in.

Media playing is a mixed bag. This is irritating... why can't every computer just come with a player as nearly universal as VLC? I haven't had trouble with audio; it seems to play my various mp3, m4a, flac, and wav files just fine. Video is trickier. It seems to play mp4 files happily. It will play some avi files, but not others. Wmv files don't work. For the somewhat technically proficient: you can convert to Chromebook-playable MP4 using various products, like Handbrake or VLC, or the command-line tool ffmpeg: "ffmpeg -i file.avi -c copy file.mp4", "ffmpeg -i file.avi -qscale 5 -strict -2 file.mp4", and "ffmpeg -i file.wmv -qscale 2 file.mp4" are three simple sets of options I've found useful. Frankly having to learn about ffmpeg is, again, irritating; this should just work.

You can enter Developer Mode using a particular keystroke during bootup. This gives you a root shell which potentially allows all kinds of fun. It also wipes all storage in your "stateful partition", so don't do this after filling up your silly 320GB hard drive with things you want. The wiping also happens on leaving Developer Mode. Developer Mode also makes Netflix stop working. After playing with this for a bit I decided I didn't really need it. I like that it's there... the principle of the device being unlocked is pleasing to me. But in the end the clean, minimal, just-works built-in Chrome OS is essentially what I want from this machine.

Conclusion: At $500+ Chrome OS is an oddball. At $200 Chrome OS is a remarkable new paradigm in computing. It's pleasant to use, and for $200, the various hardware and software flaws aren't bad enough to give me much pause. In fact, for $200, if you're at all tempted, you might as well buy it and see for yourself. A reason to pause would be to consider the $250 Samsung ARM Chromebook, which has significantly better aesthetics and might be a better choice for some people. For me, the Acer C7's better performance for 720p video and Flash gaming, plus the ability to upgrade memory and hard drive, makes it the winner.

First of all, I didn't purchase this from Amazon, since the only sellers here are selling it at absurd prices, there are plenty of places selling it for the $199 price. Because of the low price, I wasn't sure what I was going to get. I was quite surprised to see that although it is hardly a premium build, it is quite attractive for the price. Basically, this is about a $300 machine (if it ran Windows) being sold for $199.

I am getting about 4 hours of battery life, which is more than I expected. Since unlike the Samsung unit the battery is removable, I am sure that extra batteries and batteries with a longer life will soon be available.

Compared to the Samsung model this unit costs about $50 less. What you give up is (a) battery life (but the Samsung battery is not removable); bluetooth, some weight and size, and you get a 320gb hard drive instead of the Samsung's 16gb ssd. What you gain is a slighty bigger keyboard, a slightly better screen, and the ability to play Netflix (since the Acer uses an Intel processor). Although there isn't too much use for a large drive in ChromeOS, it is a huge benefit if you want to install Ubuntu which is easy to do on the Acer if you want a "real" OS on it along with ChromeOS. You can also easily expand the RAM and swap the hard drive out if you want, although it will void your warranty.

My big worry was that the hard drive would result in slow boot up times, but honestly this thing boots up from off in about 15 seconds and is extremely quick while surfing, so it hasn't been an issue.

What this thing is NOT is a Windows computer that will allow you to download programs like Office or iTunes. I am amazed at the number of people bitching about this when it is so easy to read and find out what ChromeOS is.

What this excels at is web surfing, not having to worry about viruses, and having automatic updates. WHen I use my Windows and Apple systems I seem to spend most of my time updating, worrying about viruses, etc. For the times when you are watching netflix, hulu or amazon video, catching up on emails, surfing, using goole+ hangout for video chats or doing light weight work with Goggle docs this Acer is quick, cheap and maintenance free. What more could you want for this price?

I researched the chromebook prior to my purchase and was worried that I had made a 200 dollar mistake. Many blog reviews mentioned the poor design or cheap materials. So I pictured this very ugly and flimsy laptop showing up. I opened the box and was delighted by what I found inside. I thought the Acer Chromebook really looked good. It passed the preverbal test of I would not be ashamed of being seen with the device. To me it seemed too many reviewers had taken the smallest things and made them seem like critical defects. In my opinion from an appearance perspective the Chrome book holds it own in the economy laptop world.

Performance on the Chromebook has been pretty good. The battery life seems low with only 3.5 to 4 hours. I cant stress enough that it is a different world working with a Chromebook. Not a bad world just a different world. I really like the simplicity of the device. I was not a big google product user so that has been the biggest part of the learning curve. After two weeks I have found that I am really learning to let go of a Windows universe. Life after Windows has been refreshing.

I picked the Acer due to the cost and tasks i typically use my iPad for. For example, I wanted to watch Netflix and other video streaming and the other Chromebook with the SSD seems to be unable to do that at this time.

Some reviews have mentioned the fan noise but I have not had any issues with that. It does turn on but it is not a distraction. I think much of the really detailed criticism is more for people who are very refined in what they expect for a laptop. For 200 dollars this is a great machine to surf the net, watch movies, do social media, and do homework on. It has build in virus protection and no other software is needed. The apps/ browser extensions allow for a great deal of variety in how you use the device. Add a ten dollar wireless mouse and this little machine is good for a casual evening of digital consumption or the typical homework assignment.

I would buy it again.

First off, I gotta get it out there... I am absolutely IN LOVE with this thing! I have been a Googlephile since joining Gmail in 2005, so obviously this is right up my alley. But you don't have to use all the Google services to appreciate this revolutionary piece of machine.

Anyone thinking about switching to the Chrome OS needs to know what it can and can not do. In a nutshell, if you can do it with a web browser in Windows, you can do it here. There are a few rare exceptions, but those are disappearing. If you are willing to rethink how you do things, I've found that the Chromebook can do about anything you would want to do. I am a heavy computer user, fix PCs for a living, and I have not once had to use my Windows 7 desktop since purchasing this Chromebook on 12/21/2012.

Now you won't be able to use a lot of peripheral devices with it, but most of the standards work. Keyboards, mice and external storage devices will work fine. Things like cameras, phones, etc will not (though they will still work for charging of course). This does not mean you can't accomplish your task though. The Chromebooks still have SD card slots, so for something like a camera, rather than plugging the camera in to dump pictures, you just take the SD card out and plug that in. Same task done, just in a different way. It also will not interface directly with printers, but with Google Cloud Print, that's not a problem, and you'll still be able to print from it just fine.

As far as this particular Chromebook, I don't have much to say or to compare against other models. This review is mostly about the Chrome OS itself, which is certainly the shining feature.

As someone who spends most of his days cleaning up viruses, re-installing software, etc, the Chrome OS is a HUGE breath of fresh air. It simply works exactly how it is supposed to, and it works the same every single time. I haven't had to install a single bit of software or wait for a single update. All the software you need comes from the cloud through the browser, and all the updates are done silently in the background, and at MOST will make your boot up take an extra 30 seconds. I have not once had to restart the Chromebook because of an odd glitch, though that's not to say it's impossible. Just hasn't happened to me at all through a month and half of heavy use. My Windows machine surely would of done it many times in that month and a half.

The other really great thing about living a cloud-based computing life is never worrying about losing your stuff. Services like Google Docs are constantly saving your work in the cloud. I can in theory (and have once just for fun) stop in the middle of working, go sign into my sister's Chromebook and pick right up where I left off. Fantastic. Gone are the days of losing everything you've done simply because your computer died.

The Chrome OS is also GREAT for people who share a computer. All information is kept private between accounts, unlike Windows where some security exists, but most files are still open for everyone by default. Someone could use my Chromebook to look at all sorts of awful things, and I would never know. The guest mode is also great for the security minded. Anyone who's ever owned a laptop knows that people are CONSTANTLY asking "Hey can I use your laptop real quick? I gotta check XYZ". Well in the Chrome OS, they can just use the Guest account so that they will not mess up any of your stuff, and unlike Windows' guest mode, Chrome OS will delete everything the guest downloaded/viewed as soon as they log out. It's a beautiful thing.

I feel like I could keep going on and on about how much I love this thing, but I bet hardly anyone will read it, so I won't bother. So, on to the wrap up... Oh and did I mention, like everyone else has, just how quickly this thing boots?! Less than 20 seconds. Jesus...

The Chrome OS is not for everyone, but actually it pretty much is. And it is constantly getting better and adding even more features. If you're ready to give up all the frustrations you normally have with a computer, and want to spend your computer time actually DOING stuff rather than working to keep the thing running, then get a Chromebook. If you just spent 10 minutes waiting for your computer to boot up because it had 20 updates to install, and it sent you into a fit of rage, get a Chromebook. If you're tired of paying $50 a year for virus protection that slows things way down and ultimately still lets a virus through, get a Chromebook. If you simply want to be cool like me, then get a Chromebook.

This is a fantastic little unit. Bought this back in November. For 199.00 you can't beat it. It's like an 11" tablet without the touch screen but with a keyboard, which I prefer simply because all the fingerprints on a touchscreen get to be annoying after a while.

I'm surprised at the price gouging. You shouldn't pay more than $199.00 for this little gem. You can also get it NOW for $199.00 from Googles Play store.
