Lenovo ThinkPad T420 4177RVU 14-Inch LED Notebook - Core i5 i5-2450M 2.5GHz 320GB HDD 4GB DDR3 - Ma

I bought this product from the Lenovo website because of its functionality and battery life. My personal belief is that a laptop must have 7 hours of realistic use in order to be a 'mobile' device. Im a university student and stay on the campus for about 12-14 hours three days a week, with heavy use of my Laptop. This saying, I have been very excited about the 13 hour battery life with the 9cell battery, where the 'slice battery' can up this to around 21 hours.

Here are some of the options I did, and did not take:

Display: default 720p (not upgraded)

Processor: core i5 3210m (upgraded from i3, ivy bridge)

Memory: 4GB DDR3 (not upgraded)

Storage: 320GB 7200 RPM (not upgraded)

Camera: None

Battery: 9 cell (upgraded from the 6 cell)

-also took on the fingerprint reader, not as useful as I thought. Don't upgrade if you can and spend less money. But it's not an annoyance, so if you want to spend on cash, its kinda cool.

-did not take the backlit keyboard

-took the 2x2 intel antenna

Suggestions on the upgrades:

-Don't upgrade to the 500 GB because the speed is only 5400RPM, which will significantly slow it down. Take on the SSD if you can afford it.

Core i5 3210m is enough for most people, it handles everything I throw at it, and I'm not playing games on it. I play some flash games, and it's very functional. I use photoshop to edit some images and it's very speedy. I also do some video editing and the performance is good. I don't see a good reason to upgrade to an i7. Higher processors will take in more battery, make the fan loud from trying to cool down the system.

-Don't get the backlit keyboard if you don't need it. There is an overhead angled light on the screen (included in all models) that is very powerful. It's more than enough to see the keyboard in low light, and it's more useful than just a backlit keyboard because it acts like a flashlight.

-Take your priorities on the display, I'm satisfied with the display but not fully. Definitely upgrade if you can afford it.

-Don't upgrade to the discrete graphics card, I've read from multiple sources that it makes the laptop become very warm and kicks in the fan into overdrive.

Here are my thoughts on the laptop:

Display: Quite honestly, the display is poor but one of the most functional I have ever used. The reason is because the colors are not varied, and it has the worst viewing angles I have seen. The pros are that everything is crisp and clear. The display also heavily helps the battery life. You can up the brightness, but it's not that bright it sunlight. You can smoothly see the screen at full brightness in daylight, but it could be better. One thing that really impressed me was the angles the screen can be pushed back and forth. You can push the screen back so that it can be laid flat on a surface. I didn't think it was the big of a deal, but it helped so much when I was trying to share an idea or a funny video with someone. On that note, the screen is also very rigid and sturdy. I can pick the whole laptop up from the a screen corner while its open without it giving in. The cons are also very manageable, within a couple days I got used to it and it wasn't a problem. There are steel rollcages that make sure the screen is durable

Keyboard: The keyboard flies, I wasn't a fast typer before but now I can smoothly type lightning speed and barely even look at the keyboard. I had another Lenovo laptop with the old keyboard and this new one is very much better .

Aesthetics: This is a major factor (for some reason) when people are buying a new laptop. Let me tell you that yes, this is fugly. It looks old but the design is mainly for functionality. The aesthetics, however, do show a hint of performance and business, so for that reason it will appeal to some people.

Performance: I've owned some very high performance and some very low performance PC's over the years and this laptop is consistent and reliable. It takes everything I throw at it without a hiccup and I've seen no real lags or freezes. If you're using it for school where you might make a video, edit some photos, play some games, I'm sure this won't have problems. This is NOT for hardcore video editors or gaming people. I would suggest alienware for gaming and an Apple computer for video editing. I've tried playing WOW and some maplestory and it runs very, very smoothly when on medium-high settings.

Battery Life: Like I said before, this thing is THE BEST when it comes to battery life. The T-series have the world's BEST battery life, hand down. Many competitors don't come close. One thing to note tis that it also charges extremely quickly. Mine usually goes from aroun 65% to full in about 10 minutes.

Speakers and audio: I can tell you from experiencing horrible speakers and audio on many laptops that the speakers on this thing are BEYOND what I expected. They are very loud and crisp, and the rival many dedicated desktop speakers. The noise can fill a room at around 70% audio. When it comes to plugging in some headphones, the audio maintains the same quality and then some. I'm often decreasing the volume on every video to almost the lowest because of how loud and great the audio on this laptop is. There is the Dolby Advanced Audio on the t430, so I expected a great quality and was met, and then some. This seriously surprised my and was great because I am pretty much an audiophile.

Weight/thickness/portability; The 14 inch is very thin compared to other laptops. It's only about an inch, and It kinda surprised me because the pictures make it seem much thicker. It's not bulky at all, which was what I thought it would be. Overall, it's more mobile than I thought it would be, so that was a pleasant surprise. The 14inch is pretty small, I can't say the same about the 15inch.

Trackpad: The trackpad isn't so great, it sometimes lags. It's not so reliable but smooth. Some laptop have the flat glass like trackpad, but comfort wise, this feels much better. The red button in the middle is a surprise, I didnt think I would ever use it. I'm getting used to it and it's much more accurate, reliable, efficient, and comfortable than the trackpad. The reason it's not so popular is probably because it takes so long to learn.

Connectivity: There are a total of 4 USB compatible ports, 2 of them being USB 3.0 (also compatible with USB 2.0) There is a default SD Card reader, which works. I don't use it, but there is a network card slot. I don't use the optical drive, but it's comforting to know that I can use it in case I need it for upgrading or troubleshooting (or even gaming). I chose the 2x2 intel antenna, and HEAVILY SUGGEST EVERYONE DO THAT SAME. There is no upgrade charge (at least when I ordered) and it has the REAL N speeds. There is also 2 antennas instead of the one, so connectivity is optimal. I've had no real problems with connecting to wifi besides my router being stubborn. Nothing to complain about when it comes to connecting to wifi. Its very consistent and reliable.

Fingerprint reader: work like a charm, but I use it less than I wanted to. It makes starting up alot slower because you have to wait upwards to minute for the fingerprint software to load up before scanning and logging in. I think just making the computer sleep and boot up from restore would fix this. Never had it really fail, but again, not too useful. Avoid this option if you can.

Build Quality: Excellent build quality, this has goen through military qualifications, so If it can survive a warzone, it will be able to survive a university. No complains at all about the build quality, only good things to say about it

Some concerns:

-again, the trackpad isn't the best. but the red button thing makes up for it if you learn to use it.

-sometimes the optical drive opens up after i shut down the computer and throw it in my bag. It's probably because something hit the eject button, but you just learn to be more careful with the eject button.

-I've bad some updating issues, but it fixed itself. It didnt disrupt my work flow, but windows kept on asking me to restart because the update had failed.

-Not really an issue, but the cover strangely attracts fingerprints for some reason. I don't really care since the think is kinda fugly anyways, but it's something to note.

I've own two expensive gaming laptops prior to this, a Lenovo Y series and an Asus G series. They are bulky, hot and not reliable. This however, is light, robust, simple, not hot, relatively small, and reliable. I was a gamer but now I will never go back to buying a gaming laptop, I would rather sacrifice the graphical performance, than getting a big, heavy, hot, barely portable computer.

edit: I should give more credit to this laptop. It is very modular too. I've changed out the CD drive to an extra hard drive bay. I now have an SSD for my boot drive and my original HDD as my storage drive. Perfect combination.

By researching more you can even change out the screen, add an mSATA SSD, mod the appearance. It's just awesome.

I went through 3 of these in 6 months at work before finally getting one that works "almost" flawlessly. The first 2 had "bugs" galore. The 2nd one just died all together with no notice just couldn't boot it up one day. The one I have now has issues with my external hard drive I get the blue screen of death about 2 minutes after I unplug it, although this is the first and only problem I've had with this laptop. Solved by simply not using the hard drive... :(

It is fast, the laptop screen is fine, although I usually have it plugged in to a 22" Samsung. I would agree with one other user though that if you use the ctrl key a lot you will hate this keyboard (unless you just get used to it by using it exclusively). I use a wireless Logitech keyboard 95% of the time, but on the rare occasion I am forced to use the laptop keyboard, I want to stick needles in my eyes at the stupid placement of the ctrl and function keys on the bottom left. I push the Fn key instead of the Ctrl key constantly! I also find that I accidentally hit the little red mouse button that's in the middle of the keyboard a lot, but I had this problem on my old Dell too, so...

All in all, this laptop isn't aweful, but I certainly wouldn't buy one for personal use, because the "lemon" factor is much too high for my liking. That being said, I have a Toshiba that only lasted 1 year before it started to overheat, and then 6 months after that, the mouse broke (i.e. the keyboard mouse/pad no longer functions). I've had no luck with Dell recently either, so... perhaps an Apple is in my future. You get what you pay for I guess...

The Lenovo T series has yet to disappoint me, these laptops I have traveled with for years and have held up to the riggers of airports, trains, and buses. The T420 pleasantly suprised me with a nicely sized 14inch screen and decent battery life from the main battery. Too short to tell right now how the mechanics hold up, however if they are like the rest of the Lenovo's it should stay good and strong for a long time.

Acer Aspire S3-391-6899 13.3-Inch Ultrabook (Champagne)

I can't believe that there are no reviews for this item and I was a little hesitant to buy it since it did not have any reviews. I was also looking at the Zenbook but the reviews were mixed and the price was high, I decided I could wait a few more years for them to work out the glitches. I have tried all major brands out there and they were just ok to absolutely horrible, and I really can do without a disk drive as I never really used them in my other lap tops and why bother paying for something you won't use.

This is lightweight, the screen is great, the touch pad is large and all the connections are on the back which is a personal preference for myself. I bought this mainly to take with me on road trips and for dedicated use for personal stuff. My favorite feature is the bluetooth, I connected a stereo headset and found the sound quality to be crisp and clear, perfect for those times when I may want to listen to something without disturbing others.

I got an awesome deal with a amazon promotion so for the 550.00 I paid for this I found it to be an exceptional value given the size, weight and features!! A great item and price for students!!!

I've had this ultrabook for about 2 months now, and it's performed quite decently so far. I'm not a very picky consumer, and I don't gripe about small inconveniences, especially when considering that the price for this ultrabook is rather reasonable when compared to others in the same tech/spec range.

Pros: it really is ultra-light, the sleek design is similar to the 13-inch version of the MacBook Air (though the material & build are likely not as sturdy or well put-together, hence the immense price difference), and it has a sleek outer shell that doesn't retain fingerprints or stains so easily (which is something that netbook/notebook users seem to care about). Most importantly, it is immensely portable. The i3 processor is quite capable when it comes to intensive web use (which is what I mainly do with it), and it does start up quickly from its "sleep" or "hibernation" modes. Some consumers have mentioned that the speed slows down considerably when having too many windows/programs open, but I can't verify if this is the case with my own machine since I'm not the kind of user who likes to have more than 8 Word documents open while using a tab-heavy Google Chrome open as well. If you expect to execute intensive business-related activities on your notebook, I definitely would recommend stepping up to an i5 or i7 processor; I own an Acer laptop with an i5 on it, and it's able to handle larger-order tasks like that. My advice: use an i3 ultrabook for basic to intensive web use (especially cloud use), and since this machine has a 500 GB harddrive, you'll be able to save quite a lot of material on it.

Cons: the 5.5 hour battery life is something of a fabrication. You get 2.5 to 3 hours MAX if you use it for that long without break, but if you intersperse your sessions with occasional use (closing and re-opening it from time to time) the battery will drag itself out through a good part of the day. I suppose this kind of intermittent use was what Acer meant by "5.5 hour battery life". One user has accurately recognized that the screen is liable to shake too often if the notebook is moving too much; so long as you have a sturdy table or desk that doesn't budge or shake, the screen won't shake at all, even if you're clacking away at the keys with any degree of intensity. I imagine that, in general, the keys might not be responsive...at first. In the case of this notebook, the key for letter "C" was not loose enough (as if it were semi-stuck into the groove of the body), but after 2 months that particular key became loosened and now is about as responsive as the others. I had (and continue to have) a similar problem with the larger i5 Acer notebook I own: the blue "Fn" key still does not work in conjunction with the Fn controls (such as turning the volume down or up, increasing or decreasing the brightness, etc.), but since that key and its related controls are not absolutely crucial to the basic performativity of the notebook, I don't give it much mind. I still get the performance that I need from the machine. In any case, I think that Acer machines generally seem to have a slight looseness or vulnerability to their build--which is why their prices are what they are. So I can't complain.

All in all, I'm satisfied with what the notebook gives me: portability, sleekness, lightness, connectivity. I've been a consistent Acer user for a few years now (I own 3 machines by them), and I can't say they've disappointed me thus far. Even though the Cons seem to outnumber the Pros in terms of quantity, they are actually quite minor quibbles in relation to the fantastic price the notebook's offered at, and quite minor too in relation to the overall quality the notebook gives you; which is to say, it functions just as it is marketed to you (except for that fib concerning the battery life). And it really does hold up in style when placed next to the implacable army of MacBooks that you inevitably meet each time you walk into a cafe or library to work on something.

I bought this to use for my work, which did not involve heavy graphics or such things, but just a simple process of having multiple Microsoft Word windows open together with a couple of Internet tabs open in Google Chrome, one or two Excel files, and one or two more text programs (e.g. Evernote).

And this computer is slow with that amount of load. It freezes more often than I would like -about three to four times DAILY -which is a wonder because it's not like I'm running heavy games on it. Is having about six to seven Word documents open together with two or three Internet tabs on Chrome too much for a new laptop to handle? I certainly did not think the i3 processor would be so slow as to be inadequate for my simple tasks.

UPDATE: Had this laptop for about four months now. Of the aforementioned problem, I contacted Acer service center and the man there told me to try reinstalling some drivers (he sent me links). He told me that if that didn't work, to try factory-resetting the laptop. Fortunately, reinstalling the drivers fixed the problem -for three months. After that, the same problem reoccurred -freezing, disability to click, etc., etc. I reinstalled those same drivers again, and the problem has been fixed. I suppose I'll keep doing this every time the problem reoccurs. Other than this, though, the laptop is usually moderately fast and functional.

2 Months Update

So I have had the ultrabook for about two months now. For the most part it is still pretty good, but some issues have come up. Firstly, the screen does kinda shake a bit when you move it around and a little when you type. It actually shakes more than you would want a screen to shake. Secondly, my laptop has just started randomly turning off for some reason every few days. I know it is not a virus for sure, so I will look into that. Lastly, at times the fan can get annoyingly loud. Like a little too lound, and there is only one vent on the entire laptop. So that is why this goes from 5 stars to 3 stars.

Original Purchase Review

I had been shopping for an ultrabook for about 2 months for college. I had my eyes set on an acer S3 for a while, but this laptop on Amazon sealed the deal. I got it for 550 dollars at the time of my purchase (That Promo has now expired). But even at its current price. I would highly recommend the purchase. It is a very classy looking ultrabook. The new Champagne Color is really good to look at. I have gotten tons of compliments from friends and Family alike.

As for the performance aspects. The computer runs just as it should. It has instant boot up. Although I would venture to say that the Speed of the ultrabook is nothing to scream about. However, it does assure that I will never buy another computer that is not at least have a partial SSD. The Screen is decent. You get what you pay for, and then some.

If nothing else, the computer is worth buying for its aesthetics.

I've only had my new ultrabook for a month. So far, it's been problem free. I thought it would be difficult to adapt to the very flat keyboard, but it's great. I type VERY fast (over 140 wpm), and it hasn't hampered my speed in the least. Someone commented that the screen shakes when you're typing. I've found that if the laptop is on a stable surface (i.e., table), the screen stays rock steady. The other user might have the lid open too far, causing an instability. I'd recommend adjusting the screen angle, and then it's good. Another negative comment I read was about the touchpad. I can't really comment on that, since I don't care for touchpads, and am using an external mouse. So far, it's fast and reliable, without any problems.

My only reason for 4 stars, instead of 5, is that I wish the laptop had more USB ports and the USB port placement. It only has 2 USB ports, and if I need to get something off a flash drive, I have to unplug something else, since I'm often charging my iPad, while using a USB mounted IR mouse. Also, the USB ports are on the back of the laptop -not a great placement. But given the thickness of this laptop, that's about the only place with room to mount the USB's.

Overall, I'm glad I purchased this laptop, and I can recommend it.

I first reported here that I'd received a different unit than I ordered. It sure LOOKED that way, as Windows 8 showed only one .75T drive. But the drive was actually there, and installed, just not visible to the OS. It was a configuration issue that was easily solved after eventual consultation with tech support at Elutronics. The computer is lightning fast, and with an amazing 1.5T of disk storage should last for years.

While there was a SNAFU with my phone call (perhaps a problem with voicemail), as soon as Elutronics discovered that I had a problem, I received a phone call which provided me with detailed guidance on how to reconfigure, so that the second drive, which had not shown up to Windows 8, is now properly working.

Thanks to William at Elutronics for excellent followup on my problem. I'd give them 5 stars because of that! (and, of course, for a superior laptop at a great price!).

the specs on this machine are excellent but it won't stay up. Eluktronics said that they would swap it with a new one and while i wait for their instructions I'm trying to get my files and programs off it without losing anything to spontaneous reboots! Luckily i still have the backups i used to move the data to this new machine in the first place.

So it's May 1 and Eluktronics Will responded so quickly to my e-mails and sent me a replacement computer with pre-paid return label for the first defective computer. The new one booted the first time without a problem no error messages! Yeah. It is still up and running after 2 hours and the other one had re-booted twice by now.

So I have to give Eluktronics 5 stars and this replacement is just wonderful but the frustration of a bad unit up front and being "down" and now having to get Microsoft to re-license my Office software (a royal pain) makes this less than a 5 star experience.

I really would not hesitate to recommend this computer. Defective units happen and I get that. It's a beautiful unit fast!!! and quiet.

The positive feedback of customer service from a previous review of Eluktronics really sold us. The laptop arrived early and has performed flawlessly. Allows gaming & video streaming simultaneously. No issues with Windows 8 as with previous review. Once you get it set up the fingerprint reader logs you on. Navigating Windows 8 is just as easy or you can set the desktop to a more Windows 7 look if that is what you prefer. I would recommend this laptop and this seller

This pc is fast, and liking it very well except for windows 8 until today I was just absolutely dumfounded to find out that I can't use my external display for serious photo editing. I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to use it and get it over in portrait mode. Finally I looked it up online and discovered that others have found it impossible without adding a usb video card. Very disapointed as I need to use it with big monitors to check my work on sports banners and posters. I cannot believe a 1,500 laptop can't do this.

If someone can tell me I am mistaken and how to do this I will be grateful and will be glad to redo my review. As it is I think this is a serious deficit in this pc. I have cheap laptops and very good laptops that do this and just thought it was a basic feature.

This computer does everything you would expect. My only problem is not with the computer or the seller, but with Microsoft. Windows 8 for a non touch screen PC or laptop is useless. Microsoft took a step backwards in this design. I would even prefer Windows Vista over this. I did however spend another $3.00 to make the experience more bearable. The laptop is a great laptop for whoever is looking for a freaking powerhouse of a computer. The way I have had to describe it to most of the people that have asked me about it: "A desktop in a laptops case".

Battery life with H-Performance and full brightness on everything About 3-5 hours

Battery life with Power Saving mode and half brightness with no backlight on the keyboard 4-7 hours

I think this is a great computer for the price you can get it on amazon. Other retail markets will sell this for 1800-2000. Amazon for 1300 is awesome!

I haven't gotten to try the Blu-Ray DVD player on it but i am sure it's pretty cool.

I am so, happy I bought this computer. It is like having both a laptop and and desktop. It is so, powerful. I would buy another Asus Gaming laptop for sure.

this is my first laptop (always had pc) and i had researched for 2 years before settleing on this one. it arrived on time and in perfect cond. it runs wonderfully and looks amazeing. the only issue i had is that after i would download a program (video game and antivirus of my choice) it shut down restarted and updated. i got an error saying something bout my driver proxy or something.... well after the second restart i updated my drivers and no problems since. the driver update really was the first thing i should of done i was just do excited to play wow on ultra that i got ahead of myself :) it stays cool and sounds/plays smooth and it comes with a 1 year warrenty it came down to this LT or one from alienware. and though the AW had more pretty thing and a slightly faster processor..it was 400 more dollars and this LT has more memory, more ram a blue ray player AND A WAY BETTER vid card for 400 less i am so glad i choose the asus. and when i had questions the person/company who had it for sell answered my questions promptly and completely-unlike AW who disconnected twice and the operator didnt seem to know much about the product they were trying to sell. i am over all very very very happy with my purchase

It is very fast (my framerates on WOW are just as good with the battery as they are with the power supply plugged in!) and actually slightly smaller than the 17" G73 I bought this one to replace -and IT EVEN HAS A BATTERY LIFE! My G73 had an hour and 15 minutes max for email, internet, word processing, etc. and 45 mins for gaming -I've gotten double that on the G75.

The display is gorgeous and even visible (though washed out) with some direct sunlight shining on it.

The price is good, plus you get a 1 year accidental damage warranty from ASUS included in the price!

I totally recommend this laptop -just plan on a few days of Win8 training and possible 3rd-party fixes to get it to work like win7 (and to get some of your programs to run).

This computer was delivered on time. It has a great feel and it is very responsive. The first thing I noticed was the brightness of the screen it is clean and sharp, and the colors really stand out. The keyboard is solid and feels nice when typing. The other thing I noticed is how light this computer feels; this has been sitting on my lap for hours and I hardly feel it. I think that for the money I made a great choice. I have owned Dell before and I had great results, I guess that is why I went back to it. I highly recommend this laptop to anyone.

I bought this laptop to replace my Compaq Presario 3640 w/Athlon 64 processor (0.8 GHz) when the LCD screen went out. I purchased it in 2004. I love AMD processors because they significantly reduce the price of laptops and desktops alike. I absolutely love my HP G62-407DX with it's AMD Phenom II P650 2.6 GHz processor. I needed a lightweight, fast, multitasking laptop with a decent screen size (15.6"in LED display) and a webcam. This laptop multitasks and allows me to connect most anywhere there is wi-fi. Windows 7 operating system (Home Premium 64bit) is better than I anticipated. I was only seconds from purchasing a MAC. Overall I am satisfied. If you are a superuser or a gamer this is not for you. If you send/receive email, bring some of your work home with you or just want a great mid level laptop then I would say buy this laptop. It has proved to be a great multimedia laptop and with a usb tv tuner you can DVR your favorite TV shows and plays well when connected to the pc port on my hd tv. It would be nice to have a 1080p resolution (only 720p display). Does not come with restore disk and it takes a long time create. If you need a good laptop for under $500.00 this is the one for you. In my case it was well under $400.00. I use mine to update my Cub Scout Pack website, desktop publishing and entertainment. Good webcam.

Tons of options. I use this note book for Amazon.com and tons of browsing. Windows 7 makes everything easier to navigate and figure out your computer if your as computer illiterate as me. HP support has been awsome despite the reviews Ive read about them. 3 usb ports,hdmi,mic in, headphone jack, wireless and ethernet supported dvd buner wwith lightscribe(just need the lightscribe disks), sd card input. But windows 7 makes it a good with the average seeds!

Update: I decided, I really don't like this computer anymore. It's runnign really slow. Takes one or two minutes to load to the startup/account menu. The body of the laptop/skin gets dirty and is hard to clean. The glossy black scratches fast. It's such a slow computer. And, the battery lasts me MAYBE an hour and ten minutes of just browsing the internet, on low screen light. I'm going to save up for an apple laptop. I've always had a good experience with apple.

I had been searching around for a laptop for awhile, and wanted something cool looking.

So heres some specs;

PROS:

Webcam looks pretty good,

Love the sound, pretty good quality

Easy keyboard,

Tons of cool programs,

Good for schooling.

CONS:

The mouse, it's pretty stupid.. but i manage since my wireless mouse broke.

the mouse buttons are hard to press untill you've used it for a few weeks.

my computer is starting to run kinda slow, and i'm hating that. i dont have many programs, music or files on here.

The USB ports are too close together, so my ipod cord and my USB flash drive cant be plugged next to eachother because they wont fit.

And of course, the battery. It DOES NOT last long, at all. which bugs me, because i have to bring my charger with me EVERYWERE. it lasts me maybe, 3 hours.

BUT, all in all. I do like this computer and hope to keep it for awhile. So i would reccomend.

Amazing laptop, I have had this for a long time with very few issues. Most issues were from viruses and what not and that does not speak on the craftsmanship of the product. I can not speak for the customer service because I have not had to call them and that does speak for the craftsmanship of the product. Best computer I have ever owned, will buy from this company in the future.

I purchased this laptop back when it came out in 2009. What convinced me at the time was that it came with an Nvidia Geforece 9600M video card, not the best in its class but certainly much better than many of the integrated chips offered on laptops of comparable price. The laptop is extremely sturdy and well built. I've been throwing it in my backpack for 3 years and its still intact. At the time, it offered awesome performance for the price.

only complaints.. Runs a little hot, its a bit heavy and the clicker on the pad is a a bit stiff and noisy. Otherwise, it was a a great buy. I just upgraded to an Alienware m14x, but I deffinitely plan to keep this one as a backup. This thing is a tank.

I have the x83v model and have had it for the better part of 5 years now. It's lasted through everything and is still firing on all cylinders. My webcam did recently stop working but that's more than understandable after all this thing has been through. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because if used for periods longer than an hour of 2 it gets excessively hot and makes it uncomfortable to type let alone put it on your lap. A great laptop for the price though and the model here comes with a 9600 as opposed to the 9300 gfx card i have.

I got this laptop a year ago. I received it used from my brother, and have had no issues on it in the past year. I walk around with my laptop in arm a lot, and it has survived a few falls to the carpet. Although it's a bit bulky compared to some of the newer laptops available, it's very sturdy and I don't find its size a problem.

As far as cons to this product, they are few and not very important to me. The laptop does get pretty hot if you use it a lot (I'm on it for most of my waking hours of the day), but this is forgiveable, especially if you have one of those lap-desks for putting a laptop on. The mouse clicker is a bit noisy, but I have a separate mouse I use so this doesn't bother me at all.

Overall, a great laptop. I would easily reccommend this to anyone. ^^

Toshiba Portégé R835-p89 13.3-inch LED Laptop (Magnesium Blue) i5-2450M, 6GB DD3 Memory, 640GB HD

The problem with ultra portable is they dont have dvd/cd media readers. Now a days everyone has an external one. Trouble is if you want to run a disc at work or school you are up the creek. This computer is as light as a laptop should be. (I have and ASUS laptop that is top of the line but just too darn heavy to lug around.) This Toshiba is exactly what I wanted. Here are the pros:

1. Extremly light (I can carry it with one hand while it is open.)

2. Has a DVD tray (no need for an external one:)

3. Amazing Battery life 6 hours more or less while running the dvd drive continously.

4. 6gb ram for $699.99 which usually only gets you 4gb of ram.

5. HDMI connection

The cons:

1. the keyboard has a slippery feel.

2. The laptop feels like if you dropped it; it would shatter

3. Non lighted keyboard.

Considering everything I would buy it again.

Overall VERY good computer. I was debating between switching to a mac or staying PC and I was just not ready to make the change. I am a PC lover! This computer is packed FULL of RAM and memory. the only two downfalls.... screen is a little glary. Hard to use outside. And the mouse keys are a but clunky when pressed. Louder than my netbook. BUT overall I love this computer!

I pretty much like this Machine, BUT

I have recently upgraded from a Fujitsu Lifebook lh531 to this brand-spanking new Toshiba Portege machine.

I installed a Corsair GT240 ssd on the Fujitsu and saw my ATTO Disk Benchmark go from roughly 80K R/W (roughly!) to roughly 525K. What a screamer!!

Imagine my SHOCK then when I did the same to the Portege and saw it go from 80K to ONLY 225K.

I also copied roughly 42gb from c: to d:. It took ~5 mins wall clock time on the Fujitsu and ~12 mins on the Portege.

Does anyone have any idea as to how I might rectify this? Or am I hosed (eh)?

Bought this for my mom. She didn't need a fast computer or one with a large amount of storage space. Just something to go on FB and web surf. It serves its purpose, but this is too slow for my liking.

I bought this laptop. Before, I was running on a dell laptop that I got back in either '05 or '06 when I was getting ready to go to college....within a year and half my dell had to be kept plugged into the power outlet since the battery wouldn't get or keep too long of a charge (usually just enough time to print a document, then back on the charger it had to go). My dell also kept freezing, blue screen of death, overheated (would leave imprints on my thighs it got so hot), and programs would keep crashing for no reason. I had finally had enough and decided to buy a new laptop. My good friend has a toshiba mini and she loves it, so I figured I'd buy a toshiba this time around and see how it went.

Oh my gods, I love my laptop!!! While shockwave flash keeps crashing for no reason (in Chrome, at any rate) and it takes too long to switch between farms if I decide to play farmville on here the rest of it runs like a charm. I've only had a couple of issues with it so far, but both problems were able to be fixed and didn't impact anything of importance. While the laptop gets a little warm on the bottom, it isn't unbearable (dell would practically scorch me shortly after it was turned on). This is a very nice laptop and only took me a few days to get used to the new format and keys (slightly different layout/size compared to the dell). My only regret is that I didn't buy a replacement laptop sooner--or that I didn't start off with a Toshiba sooner. this will definitely be a brand that I stick with for future laptop purchases.

Fry's had this on sale today, the 2GB version for $249. I picked one up since my X61 was getting temperamental.

I figured for $249, how bad could it be? Well...with Windows 7 (and I'm a Mac guy as a rule) the computer is just fine for general use. Quick enough loading web pages, and, unlike the usual assortment of crapware that most computers come pre-loaded with? Office Starter (Word and Exel) for free!

I'm just a happy little guy-I would have easily spent more on a used computer, not had the most current OS, not had the upgradability (I bet when I move this to 8GB of ram it will fly!) and really, for my purposes I think this was a great buy! Highly recommend.

I'm like the other two reviewers, I got this at Frys for $249. For the money, I'm surprised at how fast it is. It's super light and the screen is crisp & clear. I didn't want to spend alot of money on a laptop, because as fast as technology goes this will be outdated within a couple months. But it's perfect for me for light use and I would highly recommend it!

Was waiting for a price drop on this unit on Amazon but finally saw it at Fry's for $249. I just need a basic simple Laptop for surfing web, MS Word and email and this works great for what I need to do. I dont expect amazing performance at this price, but it works better than I expected. Nice sized screen, easy touch keyboard, super quite fan ( I never hear it kick on and off like my old one), runs amazingly cool even when sitting on a bed or couch, fast when im online. I even ran some CAD/CAM programs that ran almost as well as my work system, the graphics card seems to handle 3D CAD/CAM fine as well as Photoshop, although the monitor might not be up to displaying super fine photo-editing qualities... it's a nice screen, just not near as good as higher end units. Build quality is good, but nothing fancy. Not a designer Laptop, just a good all around basic unit that exactly fits my needs. Im very happy with this computer.

Update: I installed an extra 4 MB of memory, for a total of 6 MB, noticed no real performance increase at all. Glad it was only $20, but install went smooth, no issues installing additional Crucible brand memory

I bought this computer for general use. I talked to one of my friends who works on technology and he suggested the Lenevo brand because as of right now Lenevo is rated in the top 3 laptop brands. I love it! it's light, the speakers are loud, and it is good quality. the backspace and number pad are a little smaller than normal but then again most laptops don't have a number pad. And sometimes the mouse turns into automatic mode..that might be able to be adjusted just haven't taken the time to see if it can or not...It is my first laptop...but have used many other people's and for the price it is great. i did pay $419 on amazon so was a little upset when i saw it was cheaper but oh well. hope this helped
