Buy HP 2000-299WM Notebook Computer Now
Put simply this laptop is excellent... The only thing that is not amazing is the Intel onboard video... which I would say is adequate... but all other aspects are surprisingly great for the price... It does play Netflix and they like perfectly fine... all components rate fairly high on the Windows User Experience rating system... except the video which is sort of in the middle of the rating... So unless you want serious games this computer is great... Long battery life with the 6-cell battery. I am blown away by the quality for the price, this laptop cannot be beat (got mine at walmart for 298!)My desk top died and went to Walmart to buy another desktop a friend suggested a lap top. This is the first laptop I have ever baught or used. I take it everywhere I go just about now. It was so easy to set up and use. I did not ever think I would get a lap top but I am so glad I got this one. I really really like this one. The price was under $300 I got a wireless mouse to go with it total out the door was $350 tax and all you can not beat this computer. This computer does a great job on basic functions. It is pretty good for multimedia and has a decent battery life. The word processing functions are great and the computer is sleek and attractive. It doesn't weigh very much and that makes in convenient to travel with. The keyboard is sturdy and well built and the touch pad for the mouse is not overly sensitive so you don't make too many mistakes by accidentally bumping it. The screen is clear and movies look great on it. The sound is loud and clear and it has just enough ports to make it convenient for all types of functions. I have enjoyed using this computer for the past year and would recommend it for anyone looking for a decent laptop at a reduced price.HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop

Pros: Huge Screen, designer case, fast cpu(ranked in top 30 for notebooks), graphics card(ati! 1GB of gddr3 ram!), good support from hp, 2 speakers w/sub,
hd audio, hdmi out, good screen resolution(1600x900), full keyboard, 500GB Hard drive, 4GB of ram.
It can run todays computer games very well. Applications open very fast. Very good integrated mic is very sensitive and can pick up anything.
Cons: low battery life, heavy, bloatware, glossy screen and chrome touchpad.
The battery life is way to low to really consider this machine something you would use on trips or flights over 2 hours long without plug
available. I also didnt think that laptops could be heavy untill I carried this laptop around the University of Texas campus. The glossy screen
reflects everything and anything making it hard to see the screen outdoors or near a window with bright light coming through. The chrome touch pad
is not as good as a plain jane plastic touchpad in that when you drag you finger, there is a little too much resistance for my liking( a little less
friction than rubbing your finger across the bottom of a shoe, unless your fingers are free of any residue, ie oils., then its smooth).
Overall this machine is a great laptop allowing me to keep my desktop off now since I purchased it. Even though my desktop is a high end gamming rig, this laptop has essentially replaced it. That being said, there are probably those of you who will not want to lug it around where ever you go. If you do, do purchase a laptop backpack as a brief case design even with one with a strap would tear into your shoulders. The battery life is annoyingly low, but is expected from a laptop with a large screen and discrete graphics card. If you want more battery life choose a laptop that has integrated graphics, but performance will be much lower. The only laptop out there that I have seen with performance and big screen, with an 8 hour battery life is a $3000 mac! Vista is no isssue here as the machine is perfectly capable of running it flawlessly. THERE HAVE BEEN NO ERRORS OR BLUESCREENS!!!!! The user who rated this machine with 1 star messed up his machine him self. He is obviosly a novice user. You only get bluescreens on computers due to user errors 99.999% of the time. I have had no issues at all with this notebook.
I ordered 2 of these laptops for my wife and I. The laptops came packaged very good, with no defects, and were delivered the next day after the order was placed. Both screens had no dead pixels what so ever and were perfect. All extra ports(useb, hdmi, ect) do not get in the way of each other. The laptops came with the hp mini-media remote, ac adapters, user guides, and pollishing cloths. Setup is a breese with HP's setup program. Do note that HP Games from wild tangent is much like a video game arcade, where you purchase tokens to play the games. 500 tokens a month for 6.99 per month. All antivirus software and office software is a trial version. I recommend unistalling the trial versions of office, hp wild tangent games(the games are not free!!!), norton(horrible, bloated, antivirus software), and the sling box software(uselesss without a slingbox for your tv). Free antivirus programs are out there.
I am giving it only 4 out of 5 due to the battery life. Otherwise you will not be disappointed. PC PitStop is a website that benchmarks computers, it ranked my system among laptops in the top 9% in the world, graphics got the top 3%.
Windows Vista Performance Index Ratings:
Processor: 5.2
Memory(RAM): 5.9
Graphics: 5.9
Gaming Graphics: 5.6
Primary Harddisk: 5.6
Any questions just comment on my post.I researched multiple computers from several brand names and settled on this one. It came loaded up nicely and the price was very reasonable. Overall, I've had it almost a month and I'm really enjoying it. I haven't begun to explore all that it can and will do. No problems and it has been a pleasure to this point. I also took advantage of the Amazon account and got 0% interest... and apparently no payments (until the offer end date).

The computer itself is good. finger print shows easily. If you are looking to install engineering programs on it it is better off buy the HP Pavilion Dv7-2270us because it got the 7200 rpm HD. As for Amazon Company, it is one of the best to deal with. I sent an e-mail to the customer service and explain the problem with this model # (it has the 5400 rpm HD). Amazon issued a full refund including return shipment fees. Thank you Amazon for your service.Read Best Reviews of HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop Here
Great Laptop Performance. Fast for all entertainment needs. Huge and fast hard-drive and good monitor resolution. The webcam's capturing capabilities are not as neat as in other HP's models but still works great with all Instant Messaging and VOIP networks as MSN and Skype.Great graphic imprint. The downside for the finished materials look is that this plastic is in particular too shiny and has to be cleaned constantly to avoid smudgy appearance.
Want HP Pavilion DV7-2170US 17.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop Discount?
First, let me qualify by saying 1) My experience with the HP Pavilion dv7 might be a fluke, and 2) Amazon doesn't seem to sell my exact model number, so I'm injecting the review here, because HP deserves it. My specific laptop is closely related to the one advertised on this page.Normally, I don't write a review at all, if the product really sucks my experience might be a fluke, or if it's a book I might have misunderstood the intent. But this laptop has been such an inconvenience, that a bad review seems like real justice.
The battery is too heavy & bulky. The laptop had to be sent back several times; the first time, they 'fixed' the motherboard, the third time they had to replace the motherboard. It still has problems if you try to work with only the battery (i.e., the A/C disconnected), you risk the laptop suddenly shutting down even when the battery is fully charged.
There are other problems as well, and frankly the memories of wasted hours are too painful to drudge up.
I can't say great things about HP support, either. Oh sure, they try to resolve things, they aren't impolite or anything (although sometimes the accent gets in the way, so who knows if they are polite or not). But there's just too much back and forth, for many problems that you end up resolving with Google searches in an eighth of the time.
One great benefit this laptop will give you it will train you to backup your computer fairly frequently (I use Acronis for backing up & restoring, and it's a godsend), because you never know when you will have to send it back to the shop.
It was a bad mistake, choosing an HP laptop based on the look and feel of the keyboard, especially when past experiences with Toshiba have always been positive.
Try another HP series; steer clear of the dv7's.

The build quality of this laptop is quite nice, the trackpad is more than big enough, the keys and buttons are all responsive and easy to find.
windows 8 is a different beast of an OS, but it feels like a breath of fresh air and a logical extension of the legacy windows platform.
The hardware specs are very nice for a laptop. If you are looking for power gaming, turn away. If you are looking for a portable family computer though, for the price this is a great piece of hardware. 4GB of RAM is adequate, the processor is snappy for being a dual-core, and 500GB of space is more than enough to house music, videos, pictures and apps that will undoubtedly accumulate through use.
For the price of this laptop, it is more than worth the purchase.I purchased this laptop just to upgrade from my netbook, so I could have something to do homework and travel. I wasn't looking for a desktop replacement; I have a real desktop beast for home use. When I got it home, I did some re-configuring on it, cleaned the the bloatware off, and added a Win7 style shell. I was surprised how fast it was. So I loaded WoW to see if it could run that (I normally only play on desktop). I was able to fly around Orgrimmar on medium graphics settings with little to no lag. For a machine that I paid so little for, I am very impressed.
It is unfortunate that this very capable machine gets poor reviews because the operating system is not as user friendly as its predecessors. I am not an Asus fan boy, but I have never been disappointed by their products. The computer is fine, however it appears that it is Win 8 32 bit not 64bit. Unable to address all the memory in the system. The packaging was a joke, The computer was in it's original box and then placed in a shipping box with NO packaging so it could just slide around during shipping and the shipping box was quite a bit larger; really sloppy work. Win8 is a joke, I wish I could have gotten this with Win7. The first thing I installed was a utility to give me the Win7 start button. Not to much bloatware though. A good basic laptop so I'm pleased but the packaging and Win8 knocked off 2 stars for me. My bad, it is Win8 64, Installed IOBit start 8 and a much better experience, still it's 2 stars off for the packaging.I've had several Asus computers before. I've always loved them. It seems the quality of materials for has gone down significantly since my last purchase a few years ago. The keyboard has poor response, and I often find myself going back to correct missing letters that I have apparently not hit hard enough. The keys also "bubble" up in the center of the top two rows, it's unsightly and they make an obnoxious noise when I have to it them.
Other than those issues, and maybe the fact that Windows 8 is a pain to figure out, I like this computer. It does what I need it to.just what I needed. not to fancy not to cheap. great buy for the money. delivered fast and healthy. will do it again when ready

In short, I would buy this computer again in a heartbeat. To cap it off, I tried four other laptops via Staples and BestBuy (Toshiba, Samsung, HP) and this one was the clear winner.
Buy it, you won't be sorry.I am very impressed with the seller. My laptop arrived just a few days after I purchased it and it was packaged very securely. I would highly recommend this seller and purchase from them again.

I say single-tasking because you need to know that it is a single-core computer and set your expectations accordingly, do not expect it to work as well with multiple programs open at once.
This gets a very admirable 5.1 on the Windows Performance Index, where all of the other laptops that I looked at in the sub $400 range get 4.4 to 4.9. Desktop Graphics is the lowest of the scores at 5.1, and suprisingly it picks up a 5.9 for Gaming Graphics! Surely you won't do any hardcore gaming with a computer in this price range, but since I will be doing light vector graphics work as the primary use of this computer, I was very happy to see this.
I was fortunate and found it for $330 at a local retailer, and IMO it becomes the best option with considering cost to performance of similar laptops. Also to my suprise, the SATA controller had AHCI mode already active, so I will probably look into getting a low capacity SSD to boost the performance a bit more, although it already seems quite snappy on the 320GB 5200 RPM drive that it comes with.
For tinkerers, there are two panels on the bottom with one screw in each, one gives you access to the two RAM slots, the other gives access to the HDD. There was a lot of pre-installed "junk" that I got rid of for the most part, but I hung on to a few of the apps as they seem useful, such as a hardware setup wizard that lets you adjust BIOS settings from within Windows, and the native driver updates application.
Of all of my WiFi devices, this one seems to pick up signals that I have never seen before, so I imagine that a lot of this is due to the low density and therefore unobtrusive materials used for the chasis and body rather than a super-powered WiFi module. Regardless of the reason, it is a nice bonus.
UPDATE: Installed 8GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD without issue. I have also had an opportunity to work with the computer a little and after selling my first generation ASUS zenbook after several months of ownership and use the only difference I notice is aesthetic. One more positive that should be noted about this laptop that I have noticed after some use is the screen. It is not the highest resolution, but it is crisp with very good color reproduction and max brightness looks very usable and good.I purchased this laptop at Best Buy on July 7, 2012. 5 months later in December it stops burning dvds. I called 800-457-777 given under properties in My Computer for Toshiba support. Don't waste your breath. The little laptop did well for 5 months, but even with the one year warranty which he acknowledged covered all hardware issues you have to pay $49.95 for the phone call if you want them to "fix" this issue over the phone.
There is no yellow exclamation mark in device manager it says the device is working properly. It will read cds and dvds and will burn cds but stopped burning dvds about a week ago.
I would suggest looking around to see if there is any company left where you can understand their "tech support" and will honor their warranties. If you are just looking for an inexpensive laptop to search the internet and get email then this one may do just fine for you.

Oh, one more thing if anyone is reading this, I am not a rich man, if I was I would have the latest and greatest computers, one for the road and one for home as now. They still would be a laptop and a notebook computer (of sorts) but they would, most likely, be an Apple Macbook Pro and iPad. They seem to be the best system for my uses and the computer technology of today (imho). This laptop came with passwords installed. Took me 2 days to make passwords go away and the 'secure' passwords did conflict with fingerprint security software. This machine is still showing as it belongs to the seller. The machine is in good physical condition, however, seller never 'cleaned' past users settings/passwords to set the machine ready for the next user. Windows and thinkpad software was not updated for a long period of time. After I cleaned this clutter and updated the system with windows and thinkpad software, it is finally working as normal. It just runs hot, sometimes very hot. Battery lasts 2-3 hrs depending upon task. Bulging battery pack makes it less portable. I just use it for checking email and surf the web while I am in bed.

Before I made the order I checked to see that the advertisement specified "Genuine Windows XP". I also checked the CoA when it arrived. When the Microsoft updater offered to run "Genuine Advantage" to check the authenticity I confidently thought "sure, go right ahead."
BEWARE!do not buy this laptop....or ...dont buy laptop from tiger direct/MawishInc ..they are selling rubbish items...waste of moneyI can hardly say enough good about my purchase of a used Dell Latitude D610 laptop from Tampa Laptops through Amazon.com. The machine arrived two days after I placed the order, it was exactly as advertised, worked perfectly and was priced right. I wanted to introduce my wife to the digital world, both of us being advanced in years, and to have a machine to teach her on that operated just like my desktop with XP. This laptop is perfect for that purpose and the transaction was completely painless. Thanks to Amazon for the Tampa Laptop contact and the security of purchase that Aamzon provides.
[ASIN:B002TOKT74 Dell Latitude D610-1.73 Laptop Wireless Computer (Refurbished)]]Laptop was very hot after about 20 minutes of use, almost too hot to touch mouse pad and bottom of laptop, due to a faulty/defective battery. I was afraid it was going to catch on fire; it got so hot laptop would shut down. Finally, after a few days, battery just quit charging, etc. Took the battery completely out and laptop works fine. So, now I have a "desktop" until I purchase a new battery, which is not so good because I do Medical Transcription on the go. Make sure if you purchase that you add into you budget for a new battery because I don't think they guarantee them, though my slip said battery was in good working condition, and they do not replace batteries.
