Toshiba Satellite C855-S5356 15.6-Inch Laptop (Satin Black Trax)

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5356 15.6-Inch LaptopThis computer is good and work is excellent, however the new system (windows 8) is annoying. If you are trying to buy a new laptop that would be a good choice but try to stick with (windows 7).

I love the entire unit except for the key board seems kind of flimsy in its construction. Time will tell. Other wise excellent.

Toshiba KIRAbook 13 i7 Touchscreen Laptop

Toshiba KIRAbook 13 i7 Touchscreen LaptopCustomer review from the Amazon Vine Program Finding a laptop that you like is typically like finding a needle in a haystack. Whether you personally like a laptop comes down to form, function, and features. This laptop by Toshiba, although a good performer for every-day use, seems to struggle with some moderately intensive tasks, and has a few quirks to boot.

I'll start off with the things I immediately don't like:

1. Exhaust fan placement: the exhaust fan is located on the bottom of the unit, toward the upper right -let's say under the letter "P" of the keyboard. The laptop's slim form factor probably requires this placement -the laptop is so thin that it would be impossible to position it elsewhere. However, this placement makes it next to impossible for the laptop to cool itself effectively if it's on your lap (typical) or on some other "non-flat" surface. You probably will use this on a bed, on a sofa, or on the floor. The vent for the fan is effectively covered when placed on such surfaces. The rear edge of the laptop is slightly raised to help provide a gap for cooling when used on a perfectly flat, hard surface, but this is defeated when placed on any other surface. Other than the cooling fan, there's only one other small vent that probably serves as an air intake. It's easy to block both. The end result is that the laptop sometimes audibly struggles to cool itself, even when doing something as mundane as watching a video.

2. No Kensington Security Lock slot: the lack of a Kensington security lock slot boggles my mind, especially on a laptop of this caliber. If you are going to be traveling with this laptop, and want to lock it up in a hotel or other area, you really need to lock it away. There's no way to lock it to a table or any other object to prevent theft. I can't forgive this oversight.

3. No VGA output connector: yes, I know, technology is changing. This laptop includes a standard HDMI output. While that's great, not every device you are going to encounter has an HDMI-in. Older monitors are typically hardwired with VGA cables, and if you plan on using a projector, chances are it won't have an HDMI-in. I know this was done to save on the form-factor and keep the laptop thin, and I know adaptors are available that will make it work, but it extremely limits the number of existing devices to which you can connect.

4. No physical switch to disable wireless: while the F12 function key doubles as a "softkey" to disable wireless, allowing you to toggle "airplane mode" on or off, there's no physical switch to permanently turn off wireless.

5. SD slot does not allow for full insertion: when you insert an SD card into the laptop, half of the card will hang out of the laptop. If you are using an SD card to expand memory, or simply to transfer files, this presents a hazard to the SD card. You have to be careful not to bump it, and you have to take it out before storing for travel. The card doesn't lock into place, so it's possible it can just fall out. It also makes it a visible target for theft.

6. No indicator for drive activity: There are only two indicators on this laptop: the power-on LED, and a small "wireless" LED. There's no way to know when the laptop is accessing data on the SSD (this laptop uses an Solid State Drive as opposed to a Hard Disk Drive), or whether it's doing anything in general if things start running slowly or seem to hang.

7. Speakers are on the bottom: this is another thing I can't forgive. If you have the laptop on your lap, the speakers are against your clothing. Granted, I know laptops aren't actually meant to be used on your lap (but that's how people use them!), but if our faces are facing the screen and keyboard of a laptop, I don't understand why speakers are placed on the bottom of the laptop. It quite often will result in less-than-optimal sound.

8. Trackpad clicks are extremely stiff: the clickable trackpad seems very stiff when clicked. I've used other laptops with similar pads that are much more forgiving when clicked. Many times, I get the wrong click response -a left-click is registered instead of a right-click. I've reviewed the settings and haven't been able to resolve this. It reminds me that nothing beats "a good old mouse".

9. Solid State Disk size: the installed-and-not-replaceable SSD is 250 GB. A lot of people will find this limiting. The usable space on delivery is about 180 GB. While you can free-up some of this space by removing installed applications and components, the only way to add storage is externally. Photos, music, and especially videos will eat this limited and fixed storage space quickly. Expect to do a lot of archiving to external drives or to the cloud. Or just deleting things, which is what I have started doing.

All of that said, how does it perform? Quite well actually. I think the combination of 8 GB of RAM, the 2.0 GHz CORE i7 processor, and the Solid State Drive (SSD) offer incredible boot-up and speed with common tasks. From a sleep-state, it's ready-to-go in under 10 seconds when you lift the screen. Applications open quickly, and file transfers from external drives are lightning-quick (again, I attribute this to the SSD). In Windows 8, the system earns a 5.7 on the "Windows Experience Index", limited only by the integrated graphics. For reference, the scores are: Processor = 7.1, RAM = 7.5, Graphics = 5.7, Gaming Graphics = 6.5, and Primary Hard Disk = 8.0.

Physically, I like the design. While clearly mostly plastic, the metallic coating is a plus and virtually eliminates fingerprints -it's like a stainless steel finish for a laptop. It's light and extremely thin. It's barely thicker than a USB connector. All of the connectors are on the sides, and the four rubber feet on the bottom will keep it positioned on a table-top.

The illuminated keyboard is a plus, although personally I keep this feature turned off to conserve battery life. However, having the option to type in the dark is welcomed. I consider this a great high-end feature.

Battery life has been exceptional, far better than any other laptop or portable device I've ever used -but again, I attribute this to the low-power requirements of a Solid State Drive. On a full charge, the battery reads a full "8 hours available", but after about 90 minutes of use, this drops to about 6 hours of available charge. Granted, this number is highly variable and probably depends on what the laptop is being asked to do at any given time. Still, it's the best battery life I've ever seen, especially only when surfing the Internet or doing other mundane tasks such as writing reviews. Your ultimate battery life will depend upon your power settings, of course. I tend to be aggressive in order to maximize battery life...your mileage may vary. Charging takes a while, several hours to go from a low (under 15%) charge to a full charge.

The screen is beautiful. My middle-aged eyes cannot discern a single pixel -this is the closest to "print" that I've ever seen. It's bright and sharp. Personally I use it on the maximum resolution -which for this laptop is 2560x1440. Watching a movie or TV show is as "HD" as it can get. The touch screen is responsive -exactly the same as using any smartphone. My only complaint about the screen is that it is not as "fingerprint" resistant as the manufacturer claims -my screen is smudged all over the place. While this effect dissipates when you turn on the laptop and the screen illuminates, when the screen is off, you can see every single place you've touched the screen. Regular cleaning will be necessary.

The wireless chipset in this laptop is very good. I am on a 50 Mbps connection, and on the other side of my home, about 60 feet from the wireless router, on the first floor, through three walls, I manage to get a 25 Mbps speed-test result via wireless-N. Signal strength is always excellent, and I've never received a pop-up that the connection has been lost.

Sound quality is exactly what you would expect from a laptop. It features a Harman/Kardon sound system, so sound is marginally better than what I've heard on other laptops, but don't expect "movie theater" sound from such a small system. The one feature I do like is software processing that enables 3D and "surround" effects, which is interesting while watching movies and TV shows. I can clearly hear sounds behind me when using this feature. That said, the speakers are on the bottom, and this ultimately can affect the quality of the sound you hear, especially if it is on your lap.

What if you want to use this laptop for some more intensive tasks, such as 3D gaming? While this laptop scores a 6.5 in the "Windows Experience Index" for "gaming graphics", that means you'll typically get a "standard" resolution and performance out of it. I ran a benchmark test for a Final Fantasy game, and the result is that it will run "good" at 720p at about 30 frames-per-second, but the laptop generates an intense amount of heat, and the exhaust fan kicks into "very high" speed -to the point that it sounds like a jet engine. The benchmark test scored this as "standard"; however, I would be afraid of the long-term implications of running a modern (current release) game on this laptop for many hours -the heat alone could probably cause some long-term damage. That said, casual gaming on this laptop is more than fine. High-definition video may also produce similar noise from the exhaust fan, which I've experienced on occasion, especially when the laptop is positioned...on my lap.

The laptop includes a copy of "Adobe Photoshop Elements 11", and the laptop processes and produces previews of an image's modifications in a relatively short period of time, although not as quickly as I thought it would. However, the combination of fast processors and plenty of RAM means you can make adjustments to settings and view the results on-the-fly with relative ease. It's adequate for my use, but I am not a full-time photo-editor.

In general, the laptop build -which includes the hardware and software combination -has been extremely stable. It has not crashed after regular daily use in three weeks, and has only been rebooted when prompted by updates to Windows 8. Otherwise, I keep it in standby and it is always ready-to-go. Note: I won't get into the operating system (Windows 8), because my focus is on the hardware performance, but I will say this laptop is well-designed to take advantage of the "touch" aspects of Windows 8.

I think this laptop places "form over function", in some respects. I know it is challenging for manufacturers to get certain features into a laptop when they are trying to maximize its form, especially if they want to make it as thin as possible. However, the number of things that I listed as obvious oversights or problems cannot be forgiven in a "high-end" laptop. It performs well, it has beautiful form, but the lack of some features and the design decisions made for others keeps this from being "perfect".

Ok, I am so happy. Just got my Kirabook and it is everything I hoped it would be...and with some great services which is a new twist. I really wanted a lightweight beautiful laptop but didn't know what to get, and I didn't really want to go Apple. I like Windows. I know it, it works great for me and I'm super productive with it. I did some research and David Pierce's review on The Verge convinced me to look closely at Toshiba's new Kirabook. He said, "the first truly premium Windows 8 laptop we've seen in a long time, competitive across every spec and feature with the best of what Apple can offer". I love that it comes with two years of Adobe Photoshop, security and 24/7 support which gives me good peace of mind but the best thing is how beautiful the display is. I can't get over how crystal clear it is this device is fast and sleek. Love it. Thanks Toshiba for bringing back some powerful beauty!

Probably not a showstopper for everyone, but I thought I had a defective one when it would not connect to my office WiFi. Turns out that the issue is that there IS no 5GHz WiFi (nor a lan port or even a dongle). Seems crazy for a $2000 laptop to skimp on what must be $2.00 in manufacturing costs. Other than that, the screen is really top-notch...looks better than a retina iPad side-by-side on the same site. Build quality was good with little flex in the machine. The screen was a little loose on mine (had some play when touching). Keyboard was outstanding (moving from a Sony Vaio S, since they seem to have no desire to release a touch screen in the Z or S lines) and the touch pad was responsive as well with only a bit of accidental recognitions (usually seemed to happen when logging in and typing password). If you don't care about 802.11a WiFi, then this is a really spectacular laptop...one of the nicest I've used (albeit for a brief amount of time). Probably give this one away and wait at this point and see what comes out on the new Haswell platform.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program You are reading this review either because you tend towards buying the best, or because you are wondering if there is a major difference between this Toshiba KIRA i7 and the Toshiba KIRA i5--or maybe for both reasons. I'm a person who always starts off by looking at the best, and I'm not reluctant to spend the money for the best. But I'm no fool, either. So, I always ask myself whether the top-of-the-line is really worth the extra expense. On this product page Toshiba has made a lot of comparisons between their KIRA models, but they were a little fuzzy on some things and I still had questions.

So, I did some homework, and here's the scoop:

What is the difference between i5 and i7? From what I've researched online, a "normal" user will very seldom, if ever, need to tap into the extra power the Core i7 provides. But if you handle a lot of sophisticated, detailed data work, with an intricate or elaborate software program, you will want to choose the i7. If you do work with software that likes to pause and "think about it" for any amount of time, you will want to choose the i7. If complicated, data-heavy software is just a "twinkle in your eye" or on your distant horizon, the Core i7 is the way to go. (For instance, if I wanted to install a Primavera software product on a laptop, or if I was an engineer or designer and wanted to install programs so I could work from home, I would choose the i7.) Otherwise the i5 model might do you just fine.

The i7 comes with the Windows 8 Pro operating system. (At this time Pro is an $80 upgrade over Windows 8.) Windows 8 Pro may be reason enough to choose this model over the i5: Pro allows you to host a Remote Desktop Connection so you can connect to your laptop from another PC. That means you can connect to your business or school network. It's called Domain Join. Pretty cool, huh? (I imagine you would first need to ascertain if you would have problems dealing with firewalls.) Pro also provides enhanced data protection with BitLocker and BitLocker To Go.

Other that what I've mentioned above, other features of the KIRA Core i7 and the Core i5 seem to be identical. I also have the i5, so I have done a side-by-side comparison, I have checked the system properties on both, and can say this about both of the laptops:

The touchscreens on these laptops are identical. I have found them to be helpful and very easy to use. It is user-friendly and your common-sense responses will aid you. I can fly to the bottom of a page in a blink of an eye. I can move things around, and twist them. Immediately, I can enlarge the screen to see small type or a tiny item in a picture. The touchscreen is responsive and accurate. If can be used in conjunction with a mouse (And that is what I'm doing now, until I gain more confidence and experience.).

The screen size is identical. I was concerned about the 13.3" size, because It is smaller than my old laptop, but it is not an issue because the touchscreen has the zoom feature. Because of the zoom feature, this screen size actually works better than a larger screen. The sharpness and brightness of the screen is amazing. The control panel allows for even more adjusting if necessary. The clarity and the contrast seems to allow my eyes to focus on even smaller size type that on my old laptop.

Looking at the comparisons on this product page, the i7 is said to have "Integrated Graphics" and the i5 has "Model HD Graphics". Well, that threw me for a loop, and I may be missing something, but the system properties of BOTH show "Intel HD Graphics 4000", and from what I've read online, it doesn't get much better than that. (I've not had much experience in display adapters, so if your experience differs and you think I'm wrong, a polite comment below would be more helpful than a neg...I always love to learn new things.)

Both keyboards are backlit. I find the backlighting to be immensely helpful. How did I ever do without it? If I only consider the touchscreen and back-lighted keyboard: I will never go back to my old laptop again, except to transfer files.

Speakers are the same on both models. The sound is rich and full; almost as good as what is produced by a pair of Bose speakers. Great for listening to music. Be aware that the speakers are on the sloped underside of the laptop, which means that it should be kept on a flat surface. (It is not recommended that you use it on a bed or cushion or on you lap.) If you must use it on a soft surface you should probably get yourself a riser.

Nice, light, weight is the same for both laptops. And they both look alike. I like how slim they are, yet they are sturdy. I also like that the top and bottom fit firmly together and it takes two hands to initially separate them--not any effort, it's just that you have to hold the keyboard and lift the screen. (My old laptop liked to open on its own, and that was not a good thing...)

My experience in starting up both of my KIRAs was different from what I read in some earlier reviews: When I ran the machines the first time, I had a very clear and obvious choice of going through a Microsoft account, or setting up a personal login. I found the laptops a bit slow at first, but I think that was just Norton running preliminary stuff in the background. Everything is running full-speed-ahead now. Also, once I got my batteries charged the first time it doesn't take long to recharge.

Last, but definitely not least, the Platinum Service and Support is TLC for a person like me--someone not quite up to speed on the latest technology. I can get quick, expert help whenever I need it. It kind of feels like having an AMEX black card...

One extra FYI: If you don't want to, or can't, part with your CDs and DVDs, you will need to purchase an external drive.

When I first ordered these two laptops I worried about how hard it would be to let go of the comfort of my old laptop. Obviously, I had already made the decision to upgrade, but I worried nonetheless. Would I like the touchscreen? Would my older eyes be able to deal with the smaller screen? Will the Norton security software (already installed) work with my internet connectivity problems at my home location? What about mastering the new Windows 8 and 8 Pro? And, until I opened up the boxes and took a look at these beautiful pieces of equipment, I continued to balk. Obviously, from what I've already admitted and questioned, you can tell I'm not a computer wiz. I'm not afraid of computers and things electronic, but you could say I'm not totally aware of the most current electronic technology available and how to use it. But, bottom line is this: I'm very glad I upgraded to these laptops. All of my fears have faded away. The more I use them--and I do have opportunities to use both of them--the more I love them. Even in a relatively short period of time, I already feel that it is part of me. Who could ask for more? I can't.

Want Toshiba KIRAbook 13 i7 Touchscreen Laptop Discount?

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program When it comes to laptops, I'm at a point in my career when I am no longer willing to compromise in terms of performance and style. That mindset costs me a little more in terms of the purchase price of a new machine, but when I consider that I usually keep a laptop a minimum of two years, then the premium I pay for a truly state-of-the-art laptop like the Toshiba KIRAbook 13 is about $1 a day more than a model with weaker specs and FAR less style. To me, that's the definition of "affordable luxury" and given how many hours of use my laptop gets, it's well worth it.

I had an opportunity to test both KIRAbook 13 touchscreen models--the i5 and the i7--before deciding which one to go with. On paper, the differences are negligible. The KIRAbook 13 i5 has a 3rd gen Intel i5 processor and the regular version of Windows 8. The KIRAbook 13 i7 has a 3rd gen Intel i7 processor and Windows 8 Pro. If you're not hung up on processor specs, or need the few incremental features of Windows 8 Pro, then save yourself $200 and go with the quite-capable i5 model.

My testing involved a number of real-world scenarios that relied on the software tools I use on a daily basis--the Microsoft Office 2013 suite, the Adobe CS6 suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Lightroom 4, and Photoshop primarily), and various other programs that are RAM and storage hogs. I also did a lot of testing of media files like streaming video, downloaded 1080p video files, super-high-resolution graphics files, and streaming radio and music. The media tests gave me a good idea of graphics throughput and the ability of the large 256Gb SSD to perform when massive amounts of data were being written to the disk. The final set of tests were benchmark tests designed to see how well the hardware performed in real life vs. rated speeds published by the manufacturers of specific components.

I'm not a big fan of wordy, highly technical performance reviews like the ones you might find on Tom's Hardware, so here's what I learned in plain English:

Processor performance: The i7 is definitely faster in terms of the benchmark scores, but the real-world difference is negligible unless you're using industrial strength software like Photoshop or InDesign. Those programs are going to tax any processor, and you will definitely notice a meaningful speed boost when you're driving the i7 KIRAbook. For me, that kind of performance bump alone is worth the extra $200.

SSD performance: Incredible. The KIRAbook throughput is faster than any SSD-based machine I have used, and is as good as anything on the market. Boot time is awesome, as is awake from sleep (one word: instantaneous).

Graphics performance: Also incredible. The Toshiba KIRAbook has the highest resolution display of ANY Windows laptop and it is absolutely STUNNING! Anybody who works with spreadsheets or programs with tons of toolbars (like the Adobe CS6 applications) will LOVE the expansive real estate you get with that display. Watching a movie is a joy, as well, and I would offer that once you've experienced a 1080p movie on the KIRAbook display, you will absolutely hate having to watch one on any other laptop.

In terms of head-to-head testing, the machines are nearly identical in every meaningful way. The i7 is faster in certain applications, and Windows 8 Pro does have legitimate incremental value for power users and those who work in corporate environments. Aside from that, the two machines are identical twins.

For me, the real test wasn't i7 machine vs. i5 machine, it was Toshiba KIRAbook vs. the competition. I have a background in graphic design and product development, and how a machine looks and feels is as important as what's under the hood--sometimes more so. Toshiba really nailed the design of the KIRAbook. Sure, it's as light as a feather compared to most laptops AND ultrabooks, but I'm not as concerned about engineering feats as I am about what the machine feels like in my hands, and how it looks on a conference room table next to my colleagues' machines. In this regard, the KIRAbook kicked a**. No matter where I used one of these laptops, people would come up and want to see it and try it--particularly that Retina-quality touchscreen. I love it when a device I own elicits a response like that, and I can assure you that that alone is worth the extra $1 a day it will cost you to own the sexiest computing device on the market.

The Toshiba KIRAbook 13 i5 and i7 models are BOTH fantastic performers and genuine head turners. Want one? Go for it!

IBM THINKPAD R51 CENTRINO-735 512MBtl;dr Get this laptop for simple tasks like word processing or checking e-mail. Not best for entertainment purposes like watching dvds, gaming, and Skype calling.

Clearly this is a cheap laptop and it's cheap for a reason. This laptop was manufactured by IBM who are famous for their Lenovo technology. Lenovo is a fairly good brand, so that's a plus.

Pros:

+ price: It costed $130 used.

+ keyboard: I freakin' love typing on this thing. It has a nice feel. Don't judge me.

Cons:

slow: It has a 1.6 GHz processor. What do you expect. It takes a while to start up and is kind of slow switching between tabs in Google Chrome depending on the level of content on a page and the number of tabs you have up.

clunky: This thing weighs about 11 pounds. The design is old looking & clunky. if you feel embarrassed using a dinosaur-looking machine, either don't use it in public or don't buy it. Haha.

I got this laptop because I just needed a device to type my papers for my silly ENC1102 class. The reason why I got a laptop instead of a netbook was because of price and the laptop had a more comfortable viewing & typing size. I occasionally roam around Youtube, but its speed is fine. It may be a bit laggy at times if you're watching a DVD.

Overall, this is a decent laptop for simple computing. Works best for word processing... anything productive. It fits all my needs for school. That's all I got it for.

Was advertised as 160 GB hard drive and 512 MB RAM, unit received had 40 GB drive and 768 MB RAM. Otherwise, it's working fine.

This is a sturdy laptop. After 6 months of struggling with the quirks of having Microsoft 7 Pro Plus not fully meshed with the physical aspects of the computer's capabilities, and then having to buy a battery, which was kind of expected...Microsoft then tells me my version of their programs are not registered. The number that was on the program as the key code when I first got the laptop are not a product code, not a key, not anything that matches the requirements. So I contacted the rebuilders I ordered from...they say they will get with me...three times we make email contact, and no getting with me. Either the programs were a trial version installed just to sell the laptop, (does that explain the numbers passed off as the key code?), or the program was an upgrade from XP or something...but either way I ended up with no programs and no help from this seller to rectify the problem!

HP Pavilion DV6-1050US 16.0-Inch Laptop (2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 400 G

HP Pavilion DV6-1050US 16.0-Inch Laptop1. Bus Speed is 800Mhz. In the laptop world, this would be right between slow and fast. If you a casual user (watch youtube while checking your e-mail and writing a report), this will be sufficient.

If you like to do multiple things at once (extended desktop to create dual screen enviroment, move large files to and from external HDs, burn a cd, with video(s) playing and a music production progam running) my recommendation is that you become familar with tweeking your Vista settings or buy a more powerful computer. It's not that it can't handle such lofty requests, it can. It will just be slow/will lock up.

2. Comes with 4Gb DDR2 (2x2GB). Now, this will be MORE than enough RAM for almost anyone. But what if you dream big and want to be a desktop in laptop's clothing? It's upgradable to 8GB, which is rare for a laptop. For the most part, 8 Gb laptop RAM (2 x 4GB) doesn't exsist. If you can find it, it will be at least $250+. HP Build a laptop states that a 8GB upgrade would be $400. Why would you need this much ram? I cannot say. This may be useful in the future, I do not know.

3. Harddrive speed is 5400RPM. This goes back to how much multi-accessing you do. 7200RPM would be nice, but not necessary.

4. Bloatware. I'm not really sure why this is much of a complaint in regards of any computer. Windows/Control Panel has a build in remove software feature that can remove most software completely in a short period of time. I'm sure that some computers come with INSANE programs that are so integrated into Windows, you must have a court order and holy water to remove it from your life. If you don't like the in house program, there is 3rd party softwere (free & pay) out there that claims to do a more through job cleaning out the gunk.

5. The Vista experience is rated at 3.8. Just a FYI.

6. This really isn't a "gaming" PC. It's just not. Spades, No problem. Minesweep until you can't see straight. It's your world baby. Crysis (and if you know what this game is, you know what I'm gonna say next) ain't happpening. BUT, if someone wants to try it on this notebook, please leave a comment on this review and let me know how that goes.

7. There is a slot in the PC that holds the mini remote control. On the left side of the laptop. COOOOOOOOOLLLLL! At least I think so.

8. Do I like this laptop. I do. It's not the fanciest thing on the market, but for the price, it's good.

I have only had this for five or so days but i am in love with it already lol.

I am a amateur photogrpher and i already have a bunch of photos stored on it, the space on this is great!

I have been on about eight or nine different sites (including youtube) at once and they are all as fast as just haveing one open.

The web cam is good quality, with great effects. the mic is crystal clear.

The lightscribe is great, even though it isnt in color i definitely prefer it over labels.

Oh, the only thing i wasnt looking forward to was the fact that the battery only last two hours. But it actually last about 4 hours, and that is with the laptop open and being used for four hours straight.

I no longer really play games, so the Intel integrated video being the only weak point was no big deal. ***Amazon's Ethernet Specs are Wrong*** This unit does NOT have Gigabit Ethernet, 10/100mb connection only. But everything else is top notch. Core 2 Duo 2.0, Beautiful 16" 720P HD Screen, Vista 64bit Premium (Do yourself a favor and buy the Upgrade to Ultimate 64bit), 320GB HD, 4GB Ram, eSATA, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, docking port, Wireless N!!!, remote and this is one gorgeous laptop.

I added a Gigabit Ethernet Express Card for $50, from Amazon, to make this laptop perfect.

This is a case of "You get MORE than what you pay for..."

I fell in love with this machine the instant I saw its specs and looks in Amazon... I got it delivered and the first problem I had was that the computer was described as having an internal bluetooth antenna, which after searching how to start it for half and hour and chatting with HP I realized it was not there! I got a discount from Amazon for this "mistake" which seems to happen quite frequently (I had the same problem with a Toshiba Satellite I purchased a while ago). The 64bit Vista is rather problematic than helpful. I am considering either upgrading to Ultimate or downgrade to 32bit. Although its processor is ranked as "genious" and it brings 4gb of ram I have runned tests with my old Toshiba running 32 bit Vista with a slower processor and with half the ram and time after time my new HP gets beaten!!!!!!!!!!!! I experience so many software related problems I cannot feel satisfied a single day about my purchase! The speakers and volume control give so many problems as well: I place the laptop in "mute" and still I get a fraction of a second of the beep of the instant messenger I use; the speakers are always making this noise like the power was just turned on; the volume control is non-responsive and then when it finally answers my command, it gets stuck both visually and audible. I still doubt that this machine can be expanded up to 8gb of ram as the specs in Amazon advertise, but I have not checked this yet. I guess I will get further disappointed... It's a shame that I feel this way for a laptop I found so captivating and (thought) powerful... Now I bought an xb3000 expansion base (which is advertised as the compatible one for the dv6) and I found myself with the obligation to purchase a new A/C adapter since the laptop AC should work with the base but guess what? the dv6 AC is too big for the base!!! So there you can add $50 extra if you decide to get the whole bunch. Bottom line: You can get the same performance with a cheaper, more convenient model and save yourself a lot of hassle... Sad but true!

This is my very 1st laptop, and 2nd HP computer. Originally I was looking for another desktop, as I didn't feel I could afford a laptop with decent specs. But I came across this while browsing. The price point was very good and I couldn't believe how loaded it was. Very fast, love the HD briteview wide screen. Loads up in decent time, even with all the bloatware and preinstalled Norton crap. It also has a handy little remote to run HP's media center. All in all I am very pleased with this computer.

Alienware AM18X-8636BK 18-Inch Laptop (Space Black)

Alienware AM18X-8636BK 18-Inch LaptopI thought you might want to know about a customer service nightmare I'm having with the Alienware Solution Station. My son is 13 and saved up to buy his Alienware M18x. He had a problem and tried to resent to factory settings and made a mistake. His bad...should have looked on line for instructions first. Still, we called Alienware and asked for help. For a fee, they said they would take care of it.

That was five weeks ago. Fourteen phone calls later. Four technician appointments three of which had NO technician show up. First, they did the basic re-install. However, they couldn't get the wireless card to work and came to the obviously incorrect conclusion there was something wrong with the wireless card (it was working fine before we called them). I waited for a technician a few days later. He showed up, replaced the wireless card and it still didn't work. I called back. They worked on the software some more (remotely) and still couldn't fix the wireless. So, they decided that the replacement wireless card was bad and needed to be replaced again.

I received two confirmation calls from Dell but the technician never showed. When I called, I was told it was because the part was backordered. Nobody ever called to tell me (these are three hour time windows I'm waiting).

Then, two more confirmation calls for a couple days later. The technician never showed and lied about calling me and waiting 20 minutes. At that point I said that I wasn't going to wait again for a wireless card that was unnecessary in the first place. The Alienware support person asked what I wanted him to do so I said I wanted him to fix the software. After about an hour, he did. He discovered that the technician who did the initial work (a month had passed at this point and about 10 calls) did it incorrectly and nobody ever went back to check it. Then, however, it turns out we had a problem with graphics that we didn't have before.

He couldn't solve it and instead said that we needed a new graphics card. So, today, I waited again. I got two confirmation calls from Dell and the technician didn't show up. Again, because the part is on backorder, but nobody told me. So now, I've spent countless hours working with my son at times (of course, he has to go to school at some point), taking up time in my working day, and most of it wasted because the support people did the job incorrectly the first time, told me I needed parts I didn't need, and have on-site technicians who lie and don't call customers to tell them they aren't coming.

Today, I asked to talk to someone who might be interested in hearing about this. Tech support transferred me to customer service. They wanted to transfer me to tech support. Finally, I got the woman to understand that I thought they might want to know that their tech support has been terrible and their on-site technicians don't show up. She told me her manager would call me. Who is good for a bet that I don't hear a word?

So...I wait...with my frustrated kid...for the part that is on backorder and the technician who doesn't call and there's nothing I can do, except let other Alienware users know, just as a heads up. It may be a great notebook, but it's useless if my son can't use it.

The m18x is an awesome machine. But the biggest reason people choose the m18x over the m17x is the ability to have dual GPU (and 1" inch extra screen). This model does not offer a dual GPU, so keep that in mind. Another thing to keep in mind, this thing is HUGE. Literally you won't be able to lift it with one hand. You can carry it with one, but it's big and heavy. Heat dissipation is excellent on it. Thing never got hot. In the end I ended up returning this for a m17x. Btw, Amazon rocks!

I ordered this laptop about a week ago and got it this sunday, i took the risk of buying a laptop from the US since we had different voltages since i live in kuwait but my fear was taken away and this laptop blew me away, In my opinion it had no cons up until now and it doesnt heat up quickly battery life is around 2 hours 30 mins fully charged, it comes with the quaser blue color when u power it up, the sound and graphics are really nice and i dont regret 1 bit of buying this amazing laptop, there is one thing wrong in the specifications when i ordered it, it turned out to be the intel i7-2670 but on the specifications it was the intel i7-2657 which is a minor mistake but the rest is all good ! you will not regret making this purchase trust me :)

I got this for gaming purposes.

Weight wise, it is hardly practical to take around as a laptop.

It was great for gaming etc. until one night, smoke started coming out of it!

We did get good service, but the smoke was off putting.

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch Laptop (Dark Brown IMR/Metal)

Lenovo G580 15.6-Inch LaptopThis computer is perfect! the weight is ok. It sounds good, not that quite loud but good quality sound. Windows 8 is great on this computer. The speed is quite amazing. I have a gaming pc and I am very happy with this computers performance. I Definitely recommend this product. I did a lot of researching to buy a computer for college and for the price and the hardware i can tell you this is a great choice.

Fantastic piece of hardware. Can't go any better at that price. Good for daily grinding and homework for students. One of my few good decisions. :-)

Pros: Great Price for a really good laptop. As stated by others, 5 hours on battery, beautiful screen, speakers are not bad and a beautiful keyboard. The unit feels good too, not cheap or flimsy. I only had this unit one day. The first customer that looked at it bought it.

Cons: Maybe the position of the synaptic pad being too far to the left.

Some folks may not like the shiny black palm rest and how your palm and finger prints show up so easily.

Other Thoughts: I wish I bought 2 or 3 of these. I found and installed third party start button software for Win 8. The customer loved it.

Apple 14in iBook G4 @ 1.07ghz 512MB 40G CDRW/DVDROM Wifi Osx 10.4

Apple 14in iBook G4 @ 1.07ghz 512MB 40G CDRW/DVDROM Wifi Osx 10.4The computer arrived in a timely fashion, much more quickly than I even expected.

I haven't had any problems using it.

I know it's been factory reconditioned, but it acts like a brand new computer.

I'm very satisfied.

I considered just dumping it in the trash. Its not worth anything not even the simple basics like cant even surf the web on tons of basic things example icloud isn't supported with the system things like that I even tried downloading firefox nope not supported by the system but that's NOT why I'm upset with the product I mean its an older computer I'm upset because its just malfunctioning on the simple things . Not to mention how much it kept FREEZING continuously.

tried contacting the seller to return this computer under the subject"unwanted " or something like that cuz is worthless but that was useless too.they said about dealing with deffective or doa but it is defective!! again malfunctioning and freezing i cannot do anything on it. So i wrote the exact same thing back on a second review under the subject"defective" And he wrote back OH alll of sudden its defective....uh no its been from the start. So i took that as a rude remark.

and then yesterday i tried using it one more time and BAM shut off on me ...

yeah its cheap but there is nothing that you can do with it. I would feel bad to even try and re sell it. With all sincerity SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR SOMETHING BETTER AND ACTUALLY USEFUL.

If you're reading this then don't buy!!!!!! I bought two. They worked for a month 1/2 and the hard drive crashed on mine and my brothers charging port fell out and they're constantly turning off! they dont support adobe of any types, cant play disks in them (sims games, cds barely work, dvds work ok, any games NOPE). you cant get on your email because it wont support the old program and not to forget that the charger sucks so it constantly breaks if you move it the wrong way. i bought over 5 in one month. rediculous, I thought I was getting a deal. turns out i was only paying for the looks. almost $300 altogether WASTED.

Acer Aspire 5336-2524 - C 900 2.2 GHz - 15.6" TFT Laptop

Acer Aspire 5336-2524 - C 900 2.2 GHz - 15.6' TFT LaptopThe model number for this is 5336-2524. This computer has great performance. It is extremely light. It comes with Windows 7 Home Premium instead of Windows 7 starter so I didnt have to pay for an upgrade. I love that it has a webcam and mic. My only issue is that the audio is a bit soft but I can live with that. This is a great value for the price.

update:

The plug where the a/c adapter plugs into the laptop is loose. It falls out on it's own several times a day. I have to roll it around at different angles and use weights to hold it against the connector so it stays in contact. It's gradually getting worse & worse. If I go take a bath & I'm in the middle of something, when I come back the laptop will be powered down because the plug popped out in the middle of the bath. Now there's a short in the connection too so, often the whole a/c adaptor getts shorted out & turns itself off. I have to fiddle around for sometimes 5 minutes to find just the right twist & angle & OOps, the adaptor got shorted, now I have to unplug it from the wall & plug it back in & keep trying to find a spot where it will stay plugged in & powered on & then I have to put a weight on the plug to hold it in just the right angle... & then I have to keep the laptop from sliding in the other direction and on top of that:

The headphone jack is bad too. I have to hang a weight on my headphone cable so that it put's pulling pressure on the jack just to be able to hear anything, which might not be so bad if the speakers didn't entirely break down. I cannot hear a single thing through the speakers. Nothing at all. The speakers were always too quiet, but now, they just gave up & quit working.

Another thing, NO RADIOSHACK sells the plug that fits this laptop. I've tried. I bought a plug that came close, but it doesn't fit right. The radio shacks even refuse to order the correct size. So, is this normal for this laptop? Who cares. I'm never getting an acer again & I'll never buy a laptop with a cheap, skinny a/c adaptor connection port either.

The built in microphone is worthless too. It filters the sound badly.

I have to put black tape over the camera so that my keys type the correct words on the keyboard. Typical TI BS.

Bad speakers, shakey touchpad, cheap keys, no support for linux, great screen, lots of ram.

The speakers are terrible. They are so small and cheap that mine just blew out while playing a sound near 120 hz.

Instead of getting better speakers, they killed the volume, so you wouldn't damage the cheap speakers it came with.

Now the sound system is supposed to be able to play 24-bit sound, BUT somewhere along the line, it gets heavily corrupted. It doesn't play true 24-bit sound. It may be the link between the soundchip & the speakers. I don't know, but I am certain that the sound-quality is far less than what the sound-chip is capable of, due to cheap & crummy hardware, not just the speakers. If you plug headphones in, you still get distorted hi-def sound at 24-bit.

Finally, it's very difficult to listen to anything with the speakers, even before they were blown. If I put the system on max volume & the youtube video, or whatever on max volume, you'd be lucky to make out the words. It's that bad.

Tip to others w/ this laptop: download soundfiles as an MP3 and play it in winamp or something and adjust the graphic equalizer so all the freqs are all maxed & if that doesn't work, you can open the sound-file in audacity & amplify the soundfile 10 decibles (you'll have to clip some) & you might be able to make out the words. Or upload it to an mp3 player.

I've had 3 keys come off. I can't put them back on. My laptops take a beating.

Every now & then the touchpad goes nuts. I'll push the mouse-cursor up and it will go down. I'll push it across the screen & it just stays in 1 place & shakes a little. Sometimes it just stalls altogether, sometimes permenantly until a reboot, & sometimes for a few seconds while the (processor?) catches up. I don't know why, the processor should be fast enough.

I'm hoping I can get the sound & network... working w/ another OS. The drivers only support Windows 7. That's sad. I want to see drivers for linux & XP. Speaking of which, the OS key ID sticker under the laptop has rubbed off. I cannot read the Windows 7 key! So do I have to buy a whole new OS if the hard-drive goes? Not good.

What I like about it is that it has lots of ram, a big hard-disk & a huge screen for a cheap price, at least it did when I bought it. It's one of the better laptops I've had, except for the above issues & those are BIG issues. I'm not impressed w/ Acer at all.

I have had this laptop for about a year now and use it every day for school. My only complaint is that the mouse pad is off center. It's great that they put the number keypad on the side I use that often. However with the mouse pad off center, I always feel like I have to also sit off-centered from the monitor. When I try to sit more centered, my hand hits the mouse pad and, many times, it has clicked the cursor somewhere else on the screen and suddenly I'm typing in the wrong place. Other than that, it has been a good computer for the cost.

Dell I15RV-1428BLK Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / Intel® Pentium® 2117U Dual-core 1

Dell I15RV-1428BLK Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / Intel® Pentium® 2117U Dual-core 1.8GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 SDRAM / 500GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW / Webcam / USB 3.0 / HDMI / Bluetooth / 4-cell Battery / Windows 8 / BlackFirst I might say that I bought this identical computer model but my stock number was 1430BLK instead of 1428, but I can see no difference in the features. Ther are 4 USB plugs in mine. Disappointing is the absence of a parallel and serial connections, but there is an HDMI output for HD TV. I am not sure if the battery is the same as mine.

Good basic computer for the price. But I must admit I got it from a big box store and paid about $300 for it last week, so that might have affected the 5-star grade I gave it.

It boots up in no time. There are some pauses when it runs, but few. It is way fast enough for me web surfing, much faster than my old Pentium-4 2.8 GHz with 2 Gigs of memory.

Don't let the "slow" [dual-core] clock speed fool you. With the super fast memory, large data caches on the CPU, and the 64-bit operating system and hardware, it is pretty smooth. The state-of-the-art architecture more than compensates for the clock speed. This CPU was issued just last winter, and uses only 17 Watts, yet the power supply/charger is 65 Watts, with enough headroom for the DVD, LED monitor, and other peripherals.

The Windows 8 seems scary too, at first, but I transferred my favorites, documents, etc. with the help of a USB plug-in drive, and "mastered" the OS in two days, making shortcut buttons on the desktop for things I knew I would use again. There are downloads for two huge user manuals from the Dell website, which I haven't looked at yet. I got help from a $15 book on windows 8, called "Windows 8 in easy steps" which got me out of a few jams.

Win 8 changes are mostly cosmetic. Some things about the Win 8 interface are definitely confusing, and some features changed, but "under the hood" the technical functions are very similar to XP, but looks nothing like XP. Once you shrink or delete the "apps" boxes, and fix your own virus checker, etc. (Dell pushes Mac Afee) it ain't so bad.

Microsoft has tried to combine the typical mobile-gadget human interface with the classic desktop OS look. It is like two operating system interfaces in one. You can choose which way to go. and you pretty much have to do your own desktop building. The only thing MS puts there is the trash icon and the explorer icon (with the familiar "e".)

I myself do everything from the desktop interface. I never used cell phones or mobile devices so that interface is weird to me. There are some functions that, in order to use, you have to go to the "apps" interface.

This Item is very good, in this moment I am using and has perfect funtion, available to browser explorer and fast search.

Compaq Presario Cq62-215dx Laptop Pc

Compaq Presario Cq62-215dx Laptop PcPicked it up yesterday. i wanted a clean Windows 7 install so i used the HP Recovery Manager. Then chose System Recovery. It rebooted and then gave me the option of a 'minimized image recovery'. This took about 35 minutes with numerous reboots.

Once done I had a nice, fresh OS install with just the necessary stuff (including HP Recovery Manager )

Oh yeah, had 46 updates to install but that's another story. I also updated the BIOS to the latest version. F15 A.

Kudos to HP/Compaq for giving us the option to setup our systems with no bloatware.

Good basic machine for the average user. NO HDMI, webcam, or memory card reader but a lot of folks do not need those frills.

I found this laptop at Bestbuy online Saturday for $299 and had to grab it. I checked every site and it was the best deal for the price. It is a great basic laptop and the AMD V Series I believe is a Sempron which was AMDs way to compete with Intel way back when processors were expensive. I always prefered AMD because they were cheaper and reliable. The Athlons were great, and much cheaper than the Intel Pentium so Intel came up with the Celeron to compete with the lower price Athlon. AMD fired back with the Sempron which was even cheaper yet, and a good over all processor. I kind of got away from the PC world after that so I am not sure how things are now. I think the Celerons never really hit it big, but I can say that my wife's Compaq with the Sempron lasted 5 years with not one issue. She used it daily for normal everyday computing and loved it. We just replaced it a month ago and gave it to our friend who feels it is as good as any newer laptop for surfing, using word and excel, and watching You-Tube. Her only complaint to us has been when she opens up dozens of windows by mistake (being new to the internet) she finds that the Sempron slows up a bit, but as she is learning to get rid of the pop up screens etc. she is not having any problems.

I purchased this CQ62 and when I took it out of the box I was impressed on how quick it was and for what we need it is perfect. As an entry level laptop I highly recommend it. I think I even got 5% cash back by using my Discover Card and a coupon which brought it down to $250 which made it even cheaper. Keep a look out its still on sale in the stores at $299 and backordered online. It is worth it in my opinion. This V series is for my father who does the basic surfing, watching vids, e-mailing etc. and he loves it.

Oh as for my wife, we replaced her Compaq Sempron with an HP G72-B66 because she liked the 17" screen and when I saw that on a promo sale at Staples in November for $475 with an Intel I3 360 processor, 500 GB HD, and 4 GB memory It seemed like a good deal so I grabbed it. She is happy with that also, but is having trouble getting used to the funky mouse pad on these HP G models. other than that it seems like a good laptop for the price. I have been watching these prices and they seem to hover around $550 so I guess we did get a good deal. I know nothing about I3 cores, yada yada compared to AMD Phenem's and they seem to be in the same price range so thats why I decided to try to give the Intel a try.

In conclusion, I think both of these laptops are great. The Compaq serves it needs for the low price, and the HP G72 has more bells and whistles but again it was $200 more but seems to be rated very well. Forgive my long review and my lack of the new technology. LOL, I actually work on the large Mainframe computers and all I knew about these Brands lately is that my Mainframe Changed from Digital to HP, then somhow HP and Compaq became an entity. Thats the extent of my computer exp. Correct me if I am way behind on things.

IBM Thinkpad T23 Laptop (1.13-GHz Pentium III, 128 MB RAM, 30 GB hard drive)

IBM Thinkpad T23 LaptopI've just upgraded from an older T21 to T23, because I love Thinkpads. The design is sleek and strict, without unnecessary brightness and buttons. The LCD screen is sharp, and much brighter than those I saw on Compaq. It is very slim and light, so perfect for travel. It is fast. The swappable drives take 30 seconds to change. etc. and etc.

Importantly enough, it is an excellent IBM's customer support. T-series has 3-year warranty. When I had to change a part on my older T21, I sent it on Tuesday and they returned the laptop on Thursday same week (at their cost, of course!). Online support is also superb.

You can look at ebay for good deals, but beware of possible scum! Buy it!

I bought one of these about four years ago from a surplus reseller. Installed XP Pro and Office 03.

All ran great for -well, four years. Admittedly, I abused the hell out of this unit. I more than deserved the failure, and was not surprised when it happened.

Reasons this ThinkPad is great:

-Tough (as mentioned above).

-Designed for WAY more ram than other computers sold at the time of its manufacture.

-Display gives a clear, sharp image.

-File download matrix available at Lenovo.com -all the drivers you'll ever need to restore this to factory functionality.

-Bullet-proof (unless you "attack it with an ax" as I did).

-Slim titanium frame (light, strong, dissipates heat well).

-Parts readily available (It's a ThinkPad!!!)

Finally, it failed about 3 months ago when I dropped it.

Simply putting old (sound) drive into a new enclosure and cloning it to the new unit. Strongly advise buying one if you need a reliable, inexpensive computer and you don't need a lot of processor speed

I did receive the laptop Tiger Enterprise is a big rip off. They were going to take the money and run. Please do not order anything off them. You will never receive your item.

I bought a factory refurbished IBM Thinkpad T23 from another on-line retailer and it worked great. The IBM Thinkpad T23 that I bought from a seller on amazon.com has a bad harddrive. I sent the seller an e-mail message to let him know that the IBM Thinkpad T23 that he sold me has a bad harddrive. I was not requesting my money back from the seller since I waited too long to request a refund from him. I just wanted the seller to know to stop selling refurbished laptop computers as they quite possibly have defective harddrives in them. I even went as far as to let the seller know that I am not mad at him as he may not have known there was a bad harddrive in the laptop he sold me. I never heard back from the seller and to me that is just plain rude. I would never buy a refurbished computer off of amazon.com or any other website as I don't want to take a chance on buying another bad computer.
