This is a really nice laptop. I have had it a bout 2 months now and it has surpassed my expectations. It multitasks very easily and has more than surpassed my expectations. The boot up is kind of slow but that is to be expected from a 5400 rpm harddrive. I play quite a few games and most of them tend to run smoothly, like starcraft 2, mafia 2, madden 08, cod 4, and crysis plays but lags significantly. I use it alot and it does not heat up that much at all unless you are gaming or intense multitasking. This laptop is replacing another laptop that was an asus and broke within a few days so i took it back to best buy. Their is an insane amount of bloatware on this computer to the point that it is drastically slowed down but once you remove it the laptop is fine.

I'm gonna be slightly skewed in this review because I just upgraded from a netbook (MSI Wind U120), but this laptop more than does the job. I have owned it now for about 3 months, and it has kept up superbly with everything I've thrown at it. I use it to program (I'm a CS major in school) and play games like League of Legends, and it hasn't skipped a beat. For the sale price of $589, it more than does the job.

Within one week of purchase the computer stopped working. After a conversation with Toahiba's tech support we opted to send the computer to them for repair. According to them the power cable to the board inside had come loose took about a week and a half including shipping time to get it back. This problem is of course no reflection on the seller, but a $600.00 paper weight within a week of purchase is troublesome. Got the computer back and it's working fine so far.

Aside from the obvious issue, this is a small light-weight very portable laptop that runs Photoshop CS5 and World of Warcraft without issue. The built-in speakers sound decent and the screen looks good.

HP Pavilion dm4-2050us Notebook PC (Silver)

I bought this laptop in the summer of 2010 at Costco and it has been holding up very well.

People compliment its appearance, I enjoy its 14" screen, and I use it all the time.

It's reasonably fast and is able to execute any of the programs I use easilyI spend a lot of time on Photoshop, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Office. I love the memory card readerworks so quickly! I kinda wish it had more USB ports, but that is made up for because it has an HDMI port.

Sometimes it glitches and I end up rebooting to fix the problem, nothing terribly catastrophic so far. My complaints would be the loud factor"waking it up" it makes a LOT of noise, very quiet speakers (no I haven't blown them out), and now I'm not so impressed with the battery lifeI can't go my whole school day (maximum 4 hours of being on the computer) without it needing a charge, even on lowest brightness settings and not running any programs besides Chrome and Word or Powerpoint. I've gotten used to carrying my charger around with me, as much as I don't like the extra item in my backpack.

I can't say I'm impressed or unimpressed with the fingerprint reader or any HP software itself.

Overall, the machine works and I'm content.

She recently started a new job that requires her to have her own lap top. This worked out perfect, for the price she was surprised at how powerful the computer is and it does fit her needs perfectly.

I have to admit I saw this at Costco and bought it online primarily for the aesthetic qualities. I purchased it about a year and a half ago but only recently started to use it frequently. Finally far too late given that this particular model is a little outdated I can write a review.

The keyboard is comfortable. It's an island keyboard with fairly squared off chicklet keys, and no backlight. The keyboard is high-contrast and easy to read, even just by the light cast from the screen in relatively low light. It's a nice soft-touch keyboard but I have to admit it takes some getting used to. They key travel is not as restricted as some netbooks, but no better than others. What this means is that if you're accustomed to the key punch travel from an 'old style' 100% laptop keyboard or a full-size desktop keyboard, this will seem a little awkward. Sometimes I miss a few keys, have to hit M and left shift a little harder than I expect to for the key press to register.

The screen is bright, crisp and colorful. It's not leap-out-at-you bright and super-saturated colorful like a Samsung or Apple display but this, as with most HPs, is really very bright and crisp anyway. Contrast on the screen is medium; I may see if the Intel HD 3000 software has any ability to increase contrast a smidgen. The viewing angle is good, colors are intact and image is clear up to around 35-40 degrees and starts to wash out around 45 degrees. It's not 180-degree viewing.

I upgraded this one to 6GB RAM, but don't really do anything too intensive. RAM is so cheap, though, that I always tend to 'overkill-upgrade' all my new laptops. If you're spending $500 to $1000 on a laptop, and overkill-RAM is only another $20 to $60... why not? The performance is very snappy on this thing, even old Core i3 is plenty of horsepower to push around PDFs, Word Docs, graphics editing, videos. I haven't attempted any gaming on it yet, but any laptop without a discrete GPU is going to be so-so. In every case, it'll run older 3D games in low res and newer RTS or RPG games in low res but that's just about it. This isn't designed for gaming.

In everyday desktop computing, the thing stays perfectly cool, just about the best I've seen for any laptop. After an entire day of browsing, documents, charging the phone, plugging in the USB thumb drive, etc., the bottom is still BARELY warm. Again, I haven't tried any games, but this thing isn't going to really cook unless you try to watch a movie or play a FPS game on it.

It has the standard DVD-RW combo drive, and maybe the only less-than-solid part of this notebook is that the cosmetic shell of the DVD drive the silver outside edge of the DVD door is a LITTLE loose. There are three USB (I believe USB 2.0) ports, one full-size HDMI, Ethernet, VGA, headphone, mic, and SD card slot a standard, complete compliment of ports. It also has a fingerprint scanner, which I've actually found to work really well. I generally only use it to unlock the notebook but to date, I have never once needed to re-scan a fingerprint. It has worked 100% accurately scanning my index finger over several hundred tries. This is a neat feature in that it encourages you to be a little more secure about your personal information without much inconvenience. Most of the time I do not put a password on personal computers, only work computers.

I have not exercised the battery life. For my purposes I rarely use it for more than a meeting or an hour here or there off the wire.

Finally, the aesthetic. The brushed aluminum shell is very attractive. Feels cool to the touch and very solid. The specs say 1.27" thick but it feels very light and slender at that. It feels nice when you carry it, it fits in my attache. The lid and the keyboard surface have the aluminum surface. On the keyboard surface, there's a thin strip of polished metal around the edges of the keyboard tray and mouse, which is a nice touch. The bezel around the screen is gloss black plastic and the bottom is textured black plastic. The keyboard tray is also black plastic. That's slightly regrettable; although you don't spend a whole lot of time looking at the bottom of your laptop (or, YOU may, but I don't) it's still nice to see when you're folding it up and putting it away, and nice to feel the same smooth, solid material when you hold it. This isn't a new lesson for HP. The brushed aluminum ProBooks from this same generation had a brushed aluminum bottom case as well. Of course it's a cost cutting decision and this isn't a high-end laptop, so it's well within expectation. If you care enough to have metal on the bottom of your laptop and in between the keys, there are plenty of options available. Sony, Apple, Asus, HP, etc. etc.

When I rate any consumer product I always consider "value" to be the final deciding factor. No product is completely, 100% perfect, with every possible feature and convenience. It's always a weighted evaluation of what you get for what you paid. As mentioned, this notebook has some very nice features and a nice form factor, and I believe I got it at a pretty good price, less than Costco or Amazon's current price. Even with a RAM upgrade it's a great deal. Although the 2050us model may be a bit dated by now, I would highly recommend a current dm4 model if you're looking for an attractive, portable, reasonably powerful full laptop with a full-size keyboard and optical drive for day to day browsing, documents, graphics, videos and movies.

It is very light but durable. 4 gigs is plenty for me. I like the cordless camera download feature. My last HP lasted 6 years before I justed needed an upgrade. It didn't breakdown. Hoping for the same with this laptop. Keyboard keys are not super small making it easy for me to type.

HP Pavilion DV4-2160US 14.1-Inch Laptop (Digital Plaid)

I looked for like a month before I bought this laptop (not sure what the difference is from the laptop on this page other than the color scheme).

Pros:

14" screen.

It has an impressive amount of features, including the intel i5-430 processor. I've had it less than a week, so we'll see how it holds up.

Fast

No problems with stuck-on pixels.

Nice keyboard. The DV4 has a full sized keyboard with full sized arrow keys. It actually has LEDs next to the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys. The num lock feature almost made me re-install the OS because I didn't realize it was on, and I couldn't log in. I had just used the windows easy transfer, and rebooted, and I was unable to log in. Lessons learned here: make sure you make a password reset disk, and make sure you make a second account just in case your first one gets locked out for some reason. Also burn your DVDs for system restore.

LED backlight for battery conservation.

Looks cool. The volume control and WiFi on/off switch above the keyboard are more of a proximity sensor, and are cool.

Comes with windows 7 home premium.

Wireless works well.

Cons:

The far right corner is dim, about a square centimeter area right in the corner. If I move my head to look directly at it, it's not very dim. You might not even notice unless you move the task bar like I do.

The screen is glossy. All laptops have glossy screens except for a few Dell business laptops. HP might have one too that you can special order.

The hard drive is a little noisy (but I believe any noise is too much), and a little warm. The fan spins constantly, but you can turn it off in the BIOS (it still cycles when it needs to).

Other:

The touchpad seems like it has a lot of friction at first, but it got better, and if I use the tip of my finger with light pressure it glides just fine. The touchpad screen scroll feature works well. Has a button to turn off the touchpad if you don't want to use it.

I have had this laptop for 1 week and have had no problems. I don't find it to be any hotter than my Toshiba Satellite. The Toshiba fan vents on the side, but the battery compartment was hot from the start. The Hp vents on the bottom left rear corner, but the battery area stays relatively cool so all in all it is about the same as the Toshiba for heat levels. My CPU usage stays in the 3% to 19% for all of the activities I have done so far (I use the "gadget" that came with the Desktop features to monitor the CPU usage). The keyboard has a nice firm touch to it and the touchpad is fine, just different it is a smooth metal surface. The one thing that I have discovered (which is why I only gave it 4 stars) is that the internal wireless adapter Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter caps out at a speed of 150 Mbps. I went online to the Atheros website and read the specs, because I thought something was wrong with it initially I was expecting a higher speed than that. I had purchased an inexpensive wireless N adapter from Amazon, for the Toshiba, that caps @ 270 Mbps and runs perfectly. I am thinking of using it with this HP, even though it is bulky, because I can see a download speed difference with large graphics. The speakers sound fine, far better than my Toshiba that stuttered everytime the fan turned on. I wish it had come with a longer life battery and a USB port in the rear. I am planning on replacing the battery with a 12 cell. I use a vendor on Ebay and have had good luck with their batteries prices are great. The DVD drive is a little noisy so that's a minus. I really like the dedicated scroll "bar" on the side of the touchpad. I did not realize when I was first configuring the Hp that there is a button to turn on the touchpad. Mine arrived with the touchpad turned off as the default and it took me several minutes to figure out why I could not manipulate the touchpad. Operator error clearly. So far, so good. I got this laptop for $649 after the $50 rebate that is not eligible through Amazon, unfortunately. So for $649, I am very pleased.

I searched extensively for about a month before making my decision. For my price range, there was no computer that even came close to the "H.P. DV4 2160us", and i mean no computer. Whether I'm blazing around the Internet, watching or burning DVDs, labeling the DVDs there's power a plenty and it runs cooler than most. A really pleasant surprise was how well the laptop speakers sound. The new Intel processor is noticeably faster than there previous version. All in all, if your looking for a notebook, that does it all, and looks great doing it with a easy to use keyboard, look no further. I highly recommend this model. You won't find a better book for the price of this one. So make sure you check out this model before you make your final decision. You can't go wrong with this H.P.Laptop.

This laptop looks good, is powerfull and does meet my requirements for a Win 7 performance. It is the only laptop that I have found, at that price level, that offers Intel I5 processor with 4 GB. Everyone knows that Win 7 requires power and memory. Win 7 performance on this machine is very respectable. I own a powerfull desktop and can hardly see the difference in performance. Con's:

*battery life is fair at best. Maybe 2 hours with a full charge.

*unit is a little thicker than some of the more cooler looking thin laptops.

*Cooling vent is on the bottom. This deserves some explanation. First, I looked at this feature before buying and in my opinion, the new laptops with the newer "i" processors seem to run cooler than older models. Also, there is a vent on the top of the computer directly above the bottom vent, to the left where the base and screen are hinged. You can only see the top vent when the unit is open. It seems that when the laptop is on a pillow for example and blocking the bottom vent, the top vent takes over releasing the heat but not quite as well as the bottom when not blocked. At least it seems that way to me.

*the unit does run a bit warm when using on a pillow and I am careful to monitor the temperature since my last computer dies this way.

*hp should have put the vents on the side!

My brother bought a Dell just 2 months before I bought this and he got a pre-i5 processor and g wireless. In comparison, the hp is much better in performance and price.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5041 15.6-Inch Laptop (Trax Texture in Black)

Though I didn't purchase my computer through amazon.com, I want to use this window to make mention of a couple of things about this particular model, which I understand, according to Toshiba is no longer produced, but in which I have found a very useful and handy, middle to light duty, inexpensive laptop through the year and three months I've owned it, ever since I bought it at a local office supply store. As my very first laptop, I found this particular machine very complete, and definitively most convenient for the intended purposed I had in mind at the time of purchase -Income Tax anyone? among other home mundane things-. Now, as I said, this is my very first laptop, and I don't consider myself an expert, so that's basically why to me four stars on my review would've become five if I had paid a little more attention at the time I saw it on sale and had chosen a model with a built-in webcam, which this laptop doesn't have. This brings me in turn to the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5040, which amazon also has for sale here, but at a lower price, even though that model does come with a webcam, and has more RAM memory. Other than that, it's pretty much the same computer. This is one of those times one would say: "I wish I could trade in now..." Buyer's remorse?..Not really..I'm still very happy with my Toshiba..thought most folks I know have built-in webcams in their laptops. It's ok, still four stars.

The combination of a very large rotational drive for data and a very fast M-sata solid-state drive is very hard to beat. Combined with a snappy 4-core processor and 16 gig of memory makes this outstanding. Boot from off to sign-on in Windows 8 (upgraded to Win8Pro and attached to a domain) is 14 seconds. From standby to logged in less than 8. Windows has a brand new feel (beyond Windows 8) I'm not sure I'm thrilled with Windows 8 yet but I also haven't tried any of the tutorials so I'm fighting through it on raw guessing.

One improvement the integrated LAN card is a 1X1 card in the 2.4ghz band with Bluetooth. I needed more speed so added the Intel Ultimate N 6300 1/2 size PCI-E card (upon the recommendation of Eluktronics.) Lost Bluetooth but gained 3X3 ability (potentially 450 Mbps) Since the default build has only two antennas and I didn't want to disassemble to add another, I'm capped to a theoretical 300Mbps.) I see that pretty regularly in the 5ghz band which is the other reason to like this card upgrade if your neighborhood is as RF cluttered as mine.

Vendor (Eluktronics) is very knowledgeable and centered on customer service. A hiccup with HP's update software left the machine unbootable and Eluktronics provided help and assistance beyond any reasonable expectation. I would definitely purchase from them again.

I purchased this item from another place other than Amazon. It is a replacement for the previous laptop I owned. This is a good student computer, it runs fast, has a good clear picture, holds a charge well for a large screen. It would not be a good gaming computer. The drawback I have with it is that it only has 2 USB ports and I had to purchase an extra USB that will allow me to charge my iPhone, plug in my mouse receiver, and plug in my jump drive all at the same time.

This computer is amazingly lightweight for its size and has a thin profile. Overall it is a good computer that is fairly portable for the student on the go.

11 month old computer stopped working after a shutdown, was told the motherboard was broken. To fix this, I would be in as far as the cost of the computer. The tech told me not to buy a Toshiba next time. He said his research showed this is a common problem.

Excellent laptop, But, the keyboard skips letters typed and also inserts double letters of some typed. Typing is very frustrating.

Toshiba hasn't fixed the problem in 6 months... they say they are on the verge of fixing it.

There are a lot of people wishing they had never bought the computer... you may want to hold off until it is fixed or buy from a different brand.

This is another great Toshiba laptop, I hear others complaining about broken power cords or internal components. I think for the price this laptop does do what it was priced for, student work or basic computing. It has a wonderful 17.3 inch screen that is 16x9 resolution which is more than enough space to type in Word or view entire spreadsheets. The screen is highly glossy and reflects more than you would enjoy and that is a major downfall. The speakers are nothing to boast about either. Battery life will run you 2 hrs when watching internet videos off WiFi based connection. In the end this laptop is a good one its just too old and outdated to really impress or even keep up with an on the go lifestyle. If anything try out an ASUS or look for a decent priced Toshiba right here on Amazon.com or your local electronics stores. As always this and all computers could have been better.

::Personal Experience::

My laptop still works well for basic non-mobile tasks plus the charger never broke. I use it for Word and Adobe Photoshop and it doesn't lag or die out even when running Chrome, Photoshop, etc at the same time. If you don't get lucky with your purchase then I think just return it if possible if not do a little more careful work on your next purchase. Check where it's coming from, how its going to get there, what have others experienced, maybe don't buy the "latest" computer on the shelves and much more like that.

::Personal Opinion::

This computer is way past its buy mark so I cannot recommend buying this machine as it will not give you what you need anymore.

I am a college student and I was looking for something powerful enough to multi-task yet compact and light enough to tote around. I did a lot of research and this was the most bang for the buck. It has been great in every way. Ignore the posts about the loud fan, it isn't THAT loud, besides the biggest problem with laptop failure is overheating. What would you rather have? I highly recommend this product.

So far so good. Everything works well. Over all I think it is a good little laptop. It is quiet and does not overheat. My two least favorite things about it would be the speakers and the battery life. I listen to alot of music and I think the sound quality is poor but because it has many ports I can connect external speakers. I think that it is important to be able to connect external devices, printer, camera and back up storage. The Toshiba tech support is also helpful. I like it and would recommend it. Although this has a triple core processor, it has no L3 cache, so it's going to run slower than some dual cores that are available. It also gets super hot under load. It was almost enough to burn my finger. The exhaust port felt like a stove, and I only had it for about 3 months, and I was hitting temperatures above 65C at load. It's just sad.

The high-gloss black plastic is annoying. It attracts oil and dirt from your fingers and it will get messy fast. The bezel surrounding the monitor cracked within one month of purchase.

The graphics card leaves much to be desired. It won't play many modern games, even at low quality with every detail setting disabled. I got about 2 frames per second in Dead Rising 2. I got about 10 fps in Mafia 2. It barely plays Fallout Vegas at low detail.

All in all, the worst $620 I ever spent in my life. Should've went with an HP again. My older HP laptop is not only faster, it's still running like the day I bought it. The L645D is the third Toshiba I've had with major heat problems. The specs look attractive until you investigate. I won't buy from Toshiba again.

I wanted 1920x1080 resolution in a thin and light with Sata III, USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4. The choices were this, this and this. It's a very good system all in all. I highly recommend using an SSD such as an OCZ Vertex 3. The computer boots 3x faster with an SSD. I deducted a star because of the difficulty of upgrading parts (memory, hard drive, etc). It is not as simple as removing a few screws. You can easily damage the unit in doing so.

I purchased a Dell laptop for my son from Amazon and this seller filled the order. A few weeks later the laptop died, either a bad power supply or motherboard. I called Dell to initiate a warranty claim, and they told me this machine was registered to someone else. The seller claims that was impossible and send it back to them. I did, and they replaced it with another unit. (Which was a long drawn out process with a lot of broken english involved)

So I receive the replacement and a few weeks later it dies as well, Dell accepts the registration but says it will not warranty because it is a USED LAPTOP. At this point I've paid for the item plus shipping it for repair twice and the seller will not cover anything.

SUMMARY: They sell used faulty equipment and represent it as new. Amazon's "A-Z" claim has done the Z part on this one ZERO, They have not even so much as given me a status update. Save yourself the aggravation and buy locally. These guys are scamming people.

At $649 after rebate I think this laptop hits a real sweet spot in the 13" market! I've had it for a week now and am really enjoying it. I also purchased a Samsung slim DVD writer since this mahcine doesn't include an optical drive.

Pros:

Runs very cool with the Intel processor have never had the fan kick on

No problem streaming video, and has an HDMI for for your HDTV

Best looking notebook for the price

Very fast and quiet hdd

I have to admit I really am enjoying Windows 7 I skipped the whole Vista thing

The back lit LED screen is beautiful

With 4GB RAM the system multi-taks very well

Battery Life I get 5 to 6 hrs with my custom settings, cross country trips on a plane are now a reality

The keyboard is great to type on, although the use of a fn key to use f1-f12 isn't for me

Cons:

Quite a bit of crapware and bloatware to get rid of

The track pad leaves something to be desired buggy in that it sometimes locks up from resume or comes back as a magnifying glass. You can find out how to fix this in the forurms...

The mouse buttons on the track pad are too small and require too much pressure to click.

I used to travel with a back breaking 15.4 Dell M65, this will be a joy to travel with, and I will use it more at home because of how beautiful the screen is, and it is completely quiet. I don't know if you've noticed, but dunking a product on Amazon usually gets you more "No" votes. That said, I am compelled to write this review as I believe that HP did an "evil thing" when they rolled out this product.

Before I start bitching, here are the GOOD:

***Killer looks (five stars are not enough)

***Great screen (never feels like I am looking at a 13.3" screen)

***one of the best keyboards I had used in a long time

***Powerful processor with plenty of RAM (doesn't struggle even when I keep 10 applications simultaneously open)

***Silent

***Four USB's and an HDMI out (on such a small body)

***Solid build.

Then there are the BAD:

***Buggy touch pad. Some quick fix solutions are being discussed on the forums. The issue seem to be a software bug. If so, it's just a matter of time before HP would fix it (I wonder why HP hadn't done it already; I'll grit my teeth and wait).

***Mirror surface touchpad is "sticky" (I'm not a "touch pad" guy anyway).

***A laptop bag supplied by HP screams "aesthetic murder" (I'll budget may be another $100 for a new bag)

***Having to hold function key to access F2 is real pain when working on spreadsheet (but I think I'll get used to it; I'm already warming up to using FN+Arrow to access HOME and END)

Here is the unforgivable UGLY:

***The battery life is typically 4 hours and not the advertised 10 hours (no gaming or video; only standard office work with WiFi on)!!!

This is absolutely unforgivable because

***This is not a software bug and won't get fixed in the future

***The difference between the claimed battery life and actual one is so large that it can't be explained away with fine prints (I can swallow if I get 80% of advertised battery life; not when I get only 40%)

***When the Asian manufacturers (Acer, ASUS and now Sony) claim 10hr, user actually get 10hr or more.

I think HP is having trouble catching up with the "low battery consumption" technologies. Instead of working their butt off, HP took a short cut and made a false "10hr battery" claim. After all, the world is full of suckers like "yours truly". In my part of the world, such practice is called "cheating". If you are from Google Land, you may want to call it "doing Evil".

I bought this laptop because I was tired of carrying my earlier "kitchen sink of a machine" (HP dv9000; beautifully designed). I had this fancy notion that I would carry the notebook to the office, sans the wires, bag and baggage (I've seen my friends do this with Acer and Asus). That's never going to happen till I upgrade some two years down the line.

When I am in the market the next time around, I should remember not to take HP on its face value.

I understand most of the people taking this unit out of the box have a certain level of expectation, but not all computers have up to date drivers and bios updates installed from the factory. Most if not all of the issues addressed within the reviews for this product are non existent in a fully updated unit with all the current offerings from HPs site. My unit received early 2010 has the very first bios while the update offered is 12 revisions later.

I use this machine as an always on solution that uses low power to keep the power bill down. I use it as a media center, magicjack always on phone system ( throughout my house) and for file transfers. When im lazy I take it to bed to surf before sleep.

Pros

Appearance. Lid and palm rest is brushed aluminum and looks top notch. I have not seen a laptop that looks this good, friends and family LOVE the look of the computer.

-Noise. Near silent. I read reviews with people complaining about the fan. Its nearly undetectable and I consider it a real plus. I got this just for this reason to replace a HTPC that was too loud for my bedroom. Im thrilled with the cooling so far with the majority of the heat being in the thinnest sections of the palmrest area. Heat exhaust is out the back right and does not blow on you in any way.

Weight. Doesnt compare to most full size laptops. This thing can be played with in hand in bed more like a netbook. Freedom of usage is closer to a netbook

-Performance. While lacking dedicated video I can testify to what this little powerhouse can do. Play video files up to 14gb+ mkv format BlueRay files (Star Trek 1008p) with perfect playback. The ONLY place this unit is lacking is HD flash video playback (Hulu HD) Still works fine in non full screen or standard definitions. 720p works but above that starts to see framerate loss that affects experience. This will improve with flash updates and future drivers. This unit will likely never be flawless with 1080 streaming. All 720 streaming seems to be fluid enough to be comfortable. This computer can multitask but its obviously for running one primary application at a time. Background processes and minor apps aside, this isnt a computer for watching streaming videos and doing processor intensive apps. Its just a little light on CPU to really hammer it. If your not clicking like a madman you will have no issues.

-Size. You cant find a full function laptop in a size this small. This is small and light and easy to carry yet it has the power to do full size laptop tasks. Its very thin, impressively so

-Hardware/Software included for price. DDR3 Ram, 7200rpm HDD, Windows 7 Premium. This is the smallest computer I could find that runs a full real version of Windows 7. Win7 basic in netbooks was not an option for me.

-Stereo Microphone. The microphone array in the lid of this unit is the best ive ever heard. Ive interacted with hundreds of computers and laptops and this is as good as they get. PERFECT clarity

-Keyboard. Middle of the road here. Not the best but not bad. Im typing fairly clean with it so no complaints so far. VERY minor flex.

-Soundbar. Altec lansing soundbar built into the lower front. Sounds slightly above average and as long as your expectations arent too high on bass its very good. Some comparable computers sound like an AM radio. This is up there with full size premium notebooks.

-Price. This computer is much lower cost than anything comparable in finish or function.

Cons

-TouchPad. The touchpad is a chrome smooth finish which makes your finger almost stick to it as your moving it around. Buttons are much too hard to press and click. Fingerprints are a constant on the touchpad area. The multi-touch features are a gimmick at best and should be disabled. I have to agree that this is one of the worst touchpads ive ever come across. It seems to be standard for netbooks and small laptops. This should improve with time. Noones happy with the touchpads in most if not all the 10-13" laptops I researched before buying. There is a bright white indicator for the touchpad that is an outrage. It reflects back onto the screen causing an artifact in what your trying to watch. Fixable but unexcusable. Red is off and bright white is on. Are you kidding me?

-Screen. The Screen on this is like most smaller netbooks. Very poor viewing angle. When you hit the sweet spot it looks good. Its not anything spectacular and all the manufacturers have all kinds of names and distinctions for their screens all of which mean nothing. Most leave something to be desired. This is no mac book pro screen. FAR from it.

-Battery Life. The advertised battery life is an absolute lie. To get anywhere in the realm of what they are claiming it would have to be in sleep mode untouched and even then its a reach. Under normal usage, video playback, web surfing etc, the battery life is just like a full frame laptop. 2 2.5 hours tops.

-Plastic Trim. While the unit looks stellar theres a fake crome plastic trim that has poor fitting corner joints and takes away from the total build quality (Minor)

Conclusion: I would buy this laptop again and would recommend it to a friend. Its only real drawback, the touchpad, is a mute issue for those of us that frequent a mouse. The touchpad is not enough of a drawback to not buy this fantastic computer. I did not test the webcam.

Overall, this is a pretty nice laptop.. but there are a few glaring caveats. I'll try to make this as short as possible.

Pros:

Some good design attributes. From the aluminum lid/magnesium chassis (this is unique to the dm3, as in other laptops in this category are not constructed of the magnesium chassis). Keyboard is among the best i've ever used.

Great battery life (i can get 7-8 hours with screen brightness turned down.

Good webcam.

Screen is decent. Can't complain about the brightness, and viewing angles are ok.

Cons:

As some have noted, the touchpad when waking up from sleep/hibernation gets screwy. You can fix this issue with a bios flash (look for it on HP's website).

Truncated up and down keys.

I *believe* the chassis is bigger than the category average. It also weighs about .7 lbs more than the acer 3810, and .5 lbs more than the asus ul30a.

Touchpad takes a while getting used to. If you press too hard, your fingers will smudge against the mirror finish. To correctly use it, try letting your fingers "hover" above the surface.. lightly touching it.

Overall, I think the DM3 is a worthy purchase.. if you can deal with the laptop's imperfections. Out of the Asus UL30A, Acer Timeline 3810, Lenovo U350, and Toshiba T135 (other laptops in the DM3's category), I would rank the HP DM3 as a close 3rd to the Acer Timeline 3810.

I've had this laptop for a week and I'm loving it.

Pros:

Light and good looking, great keyboard.

Price... I got this for under $ with rebate.

Fast... despite the 1.3GHz processor this machine is faster at image processing than my older 1.6GHz laptop and as fast as my 2.3GHz desktop, both running XP. Probably because 64-bit Windows 7 is able to utilize more RAM (expandable to 8GB). No problems running multiple apps.

All day battery... carrying the cord to work is no more. Runs cool and quiet.

Beautiful display

Feels solid.

No optical drive--let's speed the obsolescence of these bulky, heavy, battery sucking things.

Windows 7 is great, though avoid Live Mail and IE, which seems to get worse every release. Thunderbird and Chrome.

Cons:

Ships with a bug in the Intel power management that causes screen brightness to fluctuate on battery power. This has to be disabled or manually fixed with a download. Scary and inexcusable out of the box problem..

Touch pad sucks miserably--it must have taken months of redesign and engineering to make a simple touch pad suck this much. But I use mainly keyboard shortcuts or a cordless mouse, so no big deal for me.

Battery does not fit in completely snug, causing an annoying click when carrying it, and detracts from the "solid" feel.

MASSIVE HORRIBLE BLOATWARE AND GARBAGE SOFTWARE INSTALLED BY HP. They have installed all these ridiculous things that perform normal Windows functions but with three times the effort and ten times the fanfare, as well as gigabytes of trashy games, useless entertainment software, who knows what else. Tempting to just do a fresh install of Windows from the recovery partition, but I suspect it is rigged to reinstall all the HP crap. This is the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars. The computer must say "HP" on it a dozen times, between all the stickers and logos--no need to vandalize the OS as well.

I searched around for a long time trying to find a good balanced notebook/laptop. I chose this ASUS because of its look and features--it is a gift for my wife. I purchased an Asus K52F toward the end of November of last year. It was a speedy machine that ran great, for a while. I eventually started having trouble with the WiFi card, but that issue was resolved by installing a fresh driver.

I was perfectly satisfied with my K52F up until about three weeks ago. Around that time, I noticed a catch in the hinge area whenever I opened it up. Eventually, said hinge broke completely in half and the surrounding plastic fell away.

A bit of research revealed that the problem of the breaking hinge is a case flaw that several people had suffered from. According to what I unearthed, the Asus warranty covered this due to it being the fault of the company. The Asus warranty required me to send my computer in (on my own dime) to have them evaluate whether or not the damage was caused by me. The fact that I'd attempted to superglue my computer back together made me apprehensive about doing this, so I got in touch with a local store and got a reasonable quote on fixing it. Unfortunately, while in the store's custody, the LCD screen quit working.

Like I said, the laptop itself ran great; it's just incredibly upsetting that the machine broke after less than a year of use.

Great little computer. Fast, not loaded with too much junk. Happy with everything except the speakers on the computer are beneath it and the volume is low. With that combination, you just can't hear movies or music very well if there is any competing noise at all. I solved the problem by getting little speakers (from Amazon) called Chill Pills, and they inexpensively turned my little ASUS laptop computer into a sound powerhouse. Problem Solved.

I've had my ASUS K52F now for about three months now. I have zero complaints. It's really fast, never hangs. I does get a little warm so you don't want to smother it on your lap, keep it on a hard surface. My Gateway desktop just died so I am on the hunt for another ASUS!

I bought this at Fry's for an equivalent price.

I'm now on my 3rd laptop after getting replaced for hardware failures. 1st laptop the video died on the laptop monitor. It was replaced after 2 days. The 2nd the fan failed after 3 days. I'm now on my 3rd laptop, hopefully its the charm.

Good

Ergonomics could be better. The battery extends below the body, creating a lift to the laptop. This is fine when on a table or desk, but rests just above my knee when on my lap. I'm surprised there is only one fan outlet, its blows out the back left and is also faces down, a blanket or thick rug can easily block the vent.

All ports are located on the left and right. I do wish there was at least 1 usb and the power in the back.

The HP logo also lights up when powered on, like Apple's. I'm not sure if there is a way to turn it off. I like to keep it running overnight and the light can be distracting.

The laptop itself is fast as can be. The Windows performance index is only slowed by the speed hard drive, which is rare with a laptop, it's usually the video that slows down a system.

The software that comes installed is actually useful. Not much bloatware (except norton, sprint, ebay). The wildtangent games are fun and most are free. There are utilities to change how often the fan runs, and apps for bluetooth and wifi.

I purchased a Pavilion dv7-4295us two days ago. I am going to have to return it. I went through 3 hours on the phone with a technician. The problem is the mousepad. It jumps around when not touched, selects items without touching as you are scrolling around, moves the opposite direction as you move the cursor at times, pauses as you are scrolling in a random fashion, and is unfortunately the ultamite downfall of this computer. The specs are great on this model. I was fairly happy for all the bells and whistles for the price I paid. If I could get the mouse working I would keep it. Now I am going to have to potentially pay a restocking fee where I bought it from, lose all the time I put into loading it, and lose time, gas and money returning it to the store. I have to have a laptop ready immediately before I head up to remote regions in Alaska.

But Really? This is the best you can do HP?

$1200 laptop by the time it gets to your door ...OH after 4 weeks of waiting for it to be "Built" because you added "Upgrades"

By the time this junk gets to you, wouldn't it be great if it actually "Worked"?

But it did not and then began the endless loop of people that ask you to do static discharge tests and other time wasting garbage.

I spent 52 hours in one week with tech support!

HP Should give me the laptop for free as pay for the hours I put in with them on this.

The Wireless in most of the HP mobile devices has issues and in these units it is fatal in my case it functioned for the first 15 minutes out of the box.

It may be that they are utilizing inferior wireless adaptors, I have read this on some of the blogs but I am not an expert, I just know mine would not work after many, many, hours of tech support calls and chats. The laptop simply didn't even "See" the adaptor. It was like it wasn't even in there?

At one point, I was actually asked by HP Tech support to take the machine apart and "Re seat" the adaptor (Read unscrew the cover take the card out by unscrewing it and then put it back together) I did it too! Did not help.

The restore to original factory setting...did that 4 times! No help.

These guys at HP do not have a clue but if you search on YouTube before you buy you will see there are pages and pages of folks that have similar "Issues" with HP products. They are not what they promise, you do not get what you pay for and while they look "Pretty" to some, the return is short lived before the gremlins appear.

Do not get caught in the HP "Trap" take your hard earn dollars elsewhere so you don't waste all the time I did.

Just trying to help others avoid the nightmarish experience I just went through and possibly save you valuable time and money.

The keyboard is cheap feeling and gives poor tactile sensation of were your hands are on the keys. The keys themselves take too little effort to press and feel like they tip or rock too much.

The touchpad integrates the left and right clicks into the touchpad which makes it bigger but at the very least it takes getting used to.

None of the USB ports are at the back half of the computer (for a flash drive its nice to have convenient ports, for printer cables and mouse cords I would much prefer to have them tucked out of the way in the back.

The power cord sticks straight out the side. Other competent designers would put a 90 degree bend in the cable if they had it going in the side like that instead it has a few inches of plastic sticking out in the way of eveything and increasing the risk of breaking the port by way of leverage.

The fingerprint reader will only work with internet explorer, not firefox or other programs.

The case is a beutifull patterened/etched aluminum.

The display is beautiful.

The way they set up the disk drive tray it is recessed into the laptop and it requires a unique extension that is best described as cheap. I will be truly suprised if it holds up and it is dificult to open even new.

I am coming from an old toshiba sattelite A65 so I should be easy to impress here. There has been plenty of time for designers to improve things, I expected this layout to be better thought out, not worse.

This computer feels and looks well made and should be future proof for a few years.

I bought this laptop from all the hype about the upcoming WiMedia UWB technology, I was anticipating blazing speeds with a wireless docking station that I would never have to hook a cable to. What I received was a docking station that the units own documentation said it was only reliable "up to 18 inches" and the reality was in order to get acceptable video quality had to be 12 inches or less. My Ethernet connection crawled at about 2 Mbps.

The laptop is light and functions well, but don't waste your money on the wireless docking station, the performance is a real disappointment and almost unusable.

The sound is awful and the screen just stopped working in less than 6 mths. It takes a lot longer to get going when you open it than my HP did. We have contacted Sony Customer Service reguarding the defective screen issue only to be given the run-around with excuse after excuse as to why they can't get someone here to fix we have currently been dealing with them for THREE WEEKS and counting. I hate Sony and will never buy anything from them again after this experience worst customer service EVER. On the plus side, it had a great battery life (when it worked properly) and the screen is a nice size. However, don't waste your money.

I love this laptop because of the color, weight, size, quality, functionality, and especially the price makes it a great deal! Sony products never let me down.
