Thinkpad X220 Laptop Lenovo, i7-2640M 2.8GHz, IPS, 12.5" Premium HD LED backlit Display, 4Gb DDR3,

Thinkpad X220 Laptop Lenovo, i7-2640M 2.8GHz, IPS, 12.5' Premium HD LED backlit Display, 4Gb DDR3, FingerReader, Bluetooth, 320Gb 5400rpm, 9cell, 720p webcam, windows 7 home premium 64 EnglishI purchased the X220 from the Lenovo website in May 2011 when it first became available. There were some 20% 30% deals back then but I think the price is always hovering around $1000 no matter what website you buy it from.

The model I got is very close to the model on this page i7 processor, IPS display, bluetooth, 4GB DDR3 RAM and slightly smaller hard drive. I'm not sure if it's mentioned here, but I also upgraded the wifi card from the basic Lenovo one to one of the Intel cards.

My previous laptop was the 5 year old IBM x41, so maybe this review is a little biased for Lenovo Thinkpads. I enjoyed using the x41, but it was becoming too slow loading up web pages, the hard drive was too small (30GB) and it ran out of batteries too fast. I was actually looking to upgrade in 2009 but I didn't find a laptop meeting my requirements. I knew I wanted a dual-core processor and SSD drive. Eventually the list grew to USB 3.0 and DDR3. When Intel announced the next gen of dual-core processor (i3, etc.) and I saw what everyone was saying about it, I decided to wait for that to come out.

It was well worth the wait. I use the x220 as my primary computer. I don't need a desktop. It might be nice once in a while to have a larger display to watch movies or pictures, but that's a nice to have. I mainly surf the web, email, download stuff, pay bills, etc. probably your average computer user. So for your average computer user, this laptop is perfect. $1000 might be a lot for a laptop nowadays, so maybe what I mean is that this laptop is perfect for your average power computer user.

Here's what I like:

Lightweight didn't weigh it but shouldn't be heavier than 3.5 lbs with the 9 cell battery

Battery life Haven't tested this one either but 6 hours on a full charge doing normal web stuff seems correct

IPS display I'm writing this review right now outside of a Starbucks. The sun is shining on the screen and I have my sunglasses on. I can still see everything on the screen very clearly. I haven't seen another laptop able to do this.

Performance Web pages load up fast. I can run Quicken, MS Office and Firefox w/o any issues. 4GB of DDR3 is nice.

Webcam I guess these are pretty standard nowadays but I didn't have one on my x41. From my side, the resolution and lighting look pretty good. I can't tell what it looks like from the other side during Skype.

Keyboard I like Thinkpad keyboards and this is no different. I like the Trackpoint and use it almost exclusively over the mousepad. Like I mentioned above, I'm used to typing on Thinkpads, and the x220 feels as good or even better than the x41. The keyboard is very responsive and not cramped at all.

Here's what I still need to check on:

Intel Widi I got the Intel Wifi card because it got better reviews. I also got it because I want to see how the Widi works. Still haven't bothered yet, but one of these days.

USB 3.0 I don't have any USB 3.0 capable devices. I'd like to see how fast I can transfer a 1GB file.

What I don't like:

On the x41 I didn't bother using the IBM software. But for the x220, I wanted to give it a try. Some of it works OK but others really wasted my time because it didn't play nice with my other software. The big one was CSS (Client Security Solutions) and my anti-virus software. I still haven't figured it out yet.

USB 3.0 is only available w/ the i7 processor. I don't think I needed i7 but I wanted USB 3.0. This seems like a waste of money to me, but I only buy a laptop every 5 years. Other people were saying to buy an i5 and then come up w/ other solutions for USB 3.0, but I hate having anything stick out of the laptop.

Lack of HDMI. It has Displayport but I'll need to get a converter. I know other laptops have HDMI built in, so this would have been pretty convenient.

Summary:

As I was writing this review, I realized that this laptop is not for everyone. You can probably go out and drop $400 for a decent laptop. I did that for my sister last November. The laptop she got was decent. But if you are a power user or your laptop is your primary computer and can afford to splurge $1000 for it, then seriously consider the x220. I'm really happy with it. It has everything I need and I can see myself using it for another 5 years. I think with an upgrade to an SSD drive and a new battery in a few years, it should keep this laptop running very nicely.

I have used the x220 for nearly six months now. We all know that the Thinkpad series are great business computers. They have a classic design, solid construction, decent support, and reliable performance. However, I believe that the x220 is equally appealing to consumers looking for a machine capable of handling the most intensive creative tasks, like video editing, photoshopping, etc.

PERFORMANCE:

Some programs I use on the x220 include Reason 5.0 for producing music, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, and Illustrator has enough processing power to run many of these programs simultaneously. With the latest Sandy Bridge mobile processors, the x220 runs extremely fast, efficient, and quiet. Although the x220 isn't designed to be a gaming computer, I can play Starcraft 2 on lowest settings at a stable 40+ fps framerate on 1v1. Team Fortress 2 also runs perfectly smooth on lowest settings. This may seem weak, but for gamers who ar less about maxing out settings and more about framerate, the x220 does surprisingly well. There is also an expresscard slot for gamers who want to use an external graphics card configuration via a "ViDock". Finally, I don't know of a laptop with better battery performance than the x220. And replacing the battery is a breeze, unlike the macbook pro.

DESIGN:

From a design standpoint, the x220 hasn't changed much from its predecessors. One notable change is the widened aspect ratio. While some may disagree, I think this is a great change, and makes watching movies more enjoyable. I also like how the screen can fold down completely flat. The hinge doesn't seem flimsy at all. In fact, the screen folds down *MORE* than completely flat. If you want to show a friend something on your screen like an ipad, you can easily do it with the x220. No other laptop is currently capable of this. The magnesium casing makes the system feel sturdy, but the rubberized plastic is slowly starting to wear off. Not really a big deal, but definitely notable. The SDHC reader is positioned on the right side, near the front. A super convenient and easy to access card reader. There are 4 usb ports, providing plenty of interfacing options. One downside for me is Lenovo's preference of a DisplayPort over HDMI. I use a converter, which works decently, but not quite as cisp as a normal HDMI to HDMI. Finally, i can no longer use a laptop trackpad anymore. I find the thinkpad pointing stick ("nipple") to give me far superior control. I had to increase the sensitivity, but once you get used to it, it's hard to go back.

SOFTWARE:

The x220 comes pretty un-bloated with not too many extraneous programs. The ThinkVantage software is useful as it easily download and install updates for drivers. Overall, the software is nice, but not the greatest. The x220 ships with outdated Wi-Fi drivers, resulting in unacceptable performance. The volume buttons are sometimes glitchy, as with the brightness control. These setbacks, however, are not the dealbreaker for me. One positive is that the x220 ships with Windows on a harddrive partition, allowing you to easily reformat the harddrive in the future.

OTHER STUFF

A huge advantage over the MacBook Pro is the upgradeability of the x220. I easily went from 4gigs to 8 gigs of ram and I plan on installing a solid state drive in the future. The x220 comes with a rare eSata port, allowing you to install a Micro Solid State harddrive in addition to a standard 2.5" harddrive. If you keep your important programs / OS files on the micro solid state (such as an Intel 310 series), you will have SSD performance with HDD sized storage.

Another advantage is the x220's amazing screen. The premium IPS disay is IMO the most killer feature of the system. The viewing angles are ridiculous, and the color reproduction is as accurate as print media. This is a crucial feature for anyone doing film, graphic design, or photography, as it allows for the most reliable monitor. The IPS screen is also great for gaming The blacks come out super black and everything just looks like the way it's supposed to be. Some people may be concerned about the seemingly low amount of resolution, but I assure you that the x220 has the perfect amount of pixels for the 12.5" screen size. Anything else would be unnecessary and would hamper image quality. If you need more pixels, you can use an external monitor, which the x220 handles nicely. Finally, I use the x220 Ultrabase as a docking station, which is currently the best docking option for any laptop. The thinkpad docking port is actually an ultra-high bandwidth connection between all your peripherals and the x220, allowing for ultrafast and seamless docking. Until Thunderbolt optimizes its own docking options, the x220 has the edge here over any other laptop.

CONCLUSION

The x220 is not a perfect system. The price is lower than a macbook pro, but still in the premium range. Windows 7 combined with Lenovo's thinkvantage software is not on par with MacOS in terms of smoothness and bugs, but is far more tweakable, allowing the user to configure the best settings themselves (The range of options for customizing the pointing stick and touchpad are amazing). Any issues I initially had with the software, Thinkvantage was able to resolve. Overall, I believe the x220 is currently the best laptop for creative work and is more "futureproof" than the MBP. In many ways, the x220 is the anti-macbook pro. The design is less flashy and everything is more catered to the businessman yet, the x220 turns out to be an amazing computer for any consumer who requires a fast, reliable, and customizable system.

Buy Thinkpad X220 Laptop Lenovo, i7-2640M 2.8GHz, IPS, 12.5" Premium HD LED backlit Display, 4Gb DDR3, Now

I am happy to write about my experience with this Lenovo Thinkpad X220 laptop. I purchased this from Amazon about three weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I was debating between this and the 13" Macbook Air with it's aluminum body carvd from one solid piece. The specs are similar but in the end the Lenovo won out because it is user customizable, while the Apple is a closed system (you get what you buy, you can't add memory, replace hard drive, nothing). And I have no regrets. I really live this version of the system, with the faster processor (Intel i7-2nd generation quad-core running 2.8 GHz). I like the Bluetooth which is the latest spec, the USB 3 always-charging port (plus 2 USB 2.x ports), the 7200 RPM hard drive (most laptop HDs are 5400 rpm), the 9-call battery (most are 6 cell), 4GB high-speed DDR3 RAM (the best), and a lot of really great additional features, including a most wonderful keyboard (you really can't do better for a laptop keyboard, and since this is the part you interact with, it makes a big difference IMHO), a little LED keyboard light built into the top of the screen, the best pointing device short of a mouse (the red track point "eraser"), solid long-living hinges, high quality design and construction, and a host of small but delightful touches. These include a little light built into the CapsLk key to show it's status (in addition to a screen icon which displays when you change the setting), directional arrows right where you expect them, large Esc and Delete keys, and this great little fingerprint reader which is very, very convenient. I didn't think much about the fingerprint reader when I first got this machine, but what's great is you can swipe your finger while it's off, and it will start up and go into windows without a hitch no passwords, no waiting, no multiple steps to trudge through. The software for this reader is very refined every single finger is detected as a different "signature", and since you can't even use a non-scanned finger from your own hand, there's no chance anyone else's finger will work. I feel like a rich man just scanning my finger and letting the computer do all the work. The way it all adds up for me is I like this computer so much, it just makes me feel good having it around with me. I frequently take it to work (although I have a desktop there I use) and will hardly touch it, but I just like it with me. It's like a great little lap dog or something!

This computer is really fast (excellent performer) as delivered, the screen is bright and clear, I have had absolutely no problems with it to speak of, both in terms of design as well as defects. There is a review that mentions the high pitched fan, but the X220 I received has no fan noise at all. I did decide to buy the Square Trade 3-year accident-included extended warranty SquareTrade 3-Year Accident Protection + Warranty (Computer $1000-1250)with this laptop but I am not anticipating every having to use it. A few other things I've bought to enhance my ThinkPad experience: Logitech B100 optical mouse (under $10 and a real solid workhorse Logitech B100 Optical Usb Mouse Comfortable Quality Optical Precision Ower Profile Shape), LiteOn ETAU208-96 top load DVD/CD writer (a very reliable and trouble-free optical device so far, and small/portable; only requires one USB connection, most require two Liteon ETAU208-96 Top Load DVD/CD Writer Black), and the Kensington 64068F Microsaver Notebook Lock & Security Cable (simple, well made, light Kensington 64068F MicroSaver Notebook Lock and Security Cable (PC/Mac)) so I don't have to be filled with anxiety at work when I bring the X220 with me. And one more nice-to-have item, the STM Bag DP 4001-01 Vertical Small Laptop Shoulder Bag "fits most 13" screens (it's not the Alley bag, the size is SMALL for 13" laptops, I can't find the link on Amazon right now). This is a great looking carrying bag, with this wonderful padded compartment for the laptop, other pockets to fit all of the above along with the Lenovo power supply. I can even throw in my iPad in a dedicated pocket for that device. It's pricey though! Finally, I've upgraded this baby with a 160GB solid state drive (which really makes it a speed demon, no lag time for anything), and I added 4Gb memory. I know this is all overkill, and not necessary (unless you are using Photoshop, Autocad, or doing gaming the extra RAM is probably never going to be used, but it's so cheap these days, why not?) If you're thinking of gettin a SSD for this or another Lenovo laptop, keep in mind it requires a 7mm height drive, most of them are 9.5 mm. the Intel drives are 7mm (I think this is what Lenovo themselves use), but I used a Kingston SSDNow V200 (not V100 which is an older generation) which was fairly inexpensive, had the 7mm size height, and has pretty good read/write access times, like 60X faster than a mechanical drive. But you can also buy an mSATA version of a SSD which will actually install inside the Lenova X220 and you can keep the 320GB just where it is. The Kingston SSD came with cloning software so you can move the contents of the original drive right over to the SSD in about 15 minutes. You can make the mSATA drive as a boot drive as well, install the OS and use the slower mechanical drive for lots of cheap storage space. I think this machine as configured has an internal WWAN mini PCI-E device (which you can use to have built in 3G (or 4G?) mobile broadband access if you set up a contract with a carrier (it's kind of like a little cell phone in the laptop). So that would have to be removed to make room for the mSATA SSD drive.

So, as you can see, I'm having a lot of fun and draining my bank account in the process. Here is a quick run down on pros/cons to sum up:

Pros: excellent build quality, speed, performance; abolutely the best keyboard you can have in any laptop (although I do kind of like the Apple keyboards); great future-proof features like Blootooth spec, USB 3.0, and 2nd generation Intel processor; great memory capacity (16GB, I think, comes with 4GB, upgrade to 8GB for about $20); great screen (there are two versions from Lenovo, this laptop has the top of the line premium screen; viewing angle is amazing, no problems at all); 3 USB ports, advanced Display Port (easily gives you HDMI with an inexpensive converter cable); 54mm Express Card slot (replaces the old laptop card slots); SD card slot (add more memory quickly & cheaply); 720p HD camera bult into the screen bezel; dual microphones and dual speakers (speakers aren't fabulous but they're clear and just fine); and 9-cell battery pack for up to 13-hour battery life (probably more like 10 hours or so in real life I used the X220 for about a week before I had to charge it up again); the overall price is high, but it's really a great price (and is mostly discounted, like this Amazon item) if you compare it to like-configured competing laptops. The Macbook Air with similar features is about $250-300 more, for example. The Sony Vaio is also quite a bit more money; Lenovo has a "hardware maintenance" manual that shows you with many well drawn illustrations how to remove, upgrade and replace everything; Lenovo sells bases, docks, and similar hardware to add to ports and connectivity; with the bluetooth, I can have a BT mouse, BT speakers, BT headphones, etc., having the built in BT is really great (you can always buy a dongle, but then you have it sticking out a bit and using up a USB port, so it's worth a few $$ for the built in BT I feel.

Cons: the 12.5" screen is a little small (a 13" would have been better for my 58 year old eyes); when I'm using the Ctrl key, I often hit the Fn key instead and then I'm mystified why Ctrl-C doesn't copy anymore! (other than that, the keyboard design is flawless, and that's just a matter of practice); I would have preferred Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate for the price, but Home Premium is just fine; it's very light and smal but the 9-cell battery adds a little heft to it; it does NOT run hot, but can get a little bit warm on the bottom, so I suggest lifting it with some small corks or something (the battery case has rubber feet to keep it propped up at a shallow angle); that's about all I can think of.

Final note: what brought me to the Lenovo X220 was spending many hours reading reviews online, especially from the big magazines like PC Magazine. I would get really excited about a certain laptop and then there would inevitably be some fatal flaw that would take it out of consideration. This happened about 5 or 6 times until I began reading about the X-series Lenova machines, and there wasn't one significant drawback now that I have one, I can vouch for this fact, it is just a well designed, well executed, elegant, simple and joyous product. By the way, there are some really great looking laptops out there, like the Apple MacBook Airs, and the Sonys, the Lenovo is a bit of a plain-Jane, business like machine. But these laptops have a military grade rating, meaning they can take a lot of abuse without any consequence (I wouldn't put this to the test though). And the black laptop is a statement by itself. Besides, I don't want people getting too attracted to it and making silent plans for its theft.

In short, this is a wondrous and nearly perfect laptop. If you have the money, stop shopping and get one for yourself. You won't regret it!

I loved this computer. Processor is ultrafast and it has fingerprint reader and HD camera. A really nice purchase! Only downside to me is that HD is only 5400rpm, and not that large (320GB), but for that price, it's super easy to buy another one and replace it. :) I use it with Ubuntu 11.10 and it works like a charm, everything is smooth and worked out of the box. Also, seller was fast and delivered really quickly. I read a lot of complaints about they not replying emails, but my experience was the opposite, they replied me fast and were accurate. I recommend them too!

In short, after being literally confused on what laptop to buy next (after having a Vaio for years), a friend of mine recommended this for me. I've been thanking him for that since I got the laptop. The X220 is a great laptop for those who got annoyed by carrying the charger around, it is a "Mobile", with a 9 cells battery, you really don't need to worry much about power, and this is exactly why I bought this laptop.

Loving the performance, "bang" boot and shutdown, you don't really to waiiiiiiit for the desktop to show up and start working, that is, few seconds and the laptop is ready to work on!

I, for a minute, thought that the 12.5" could be a disadvantage as I never worked on less that 14" ones, but no, actually with the IPS display it's a big deal really.

Oh, that wasn't "in short", but on a serious note, and in short, a great little beast, get it.

Dell Latitude D610 14" Laptop (2.00GHz Centrino Processor, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Co

Dell Latitude D610 14' LaptopIt has served me well the few weeks I have had it now. The wi-fi is keeping me connected as I'm typing this from a hotel room. The processor is nice and fast. There are four high-speed USB connections. The unit is solidly built (perhaps a mite heavy).

My only criticisms are as follows:

The screen resolution doesn't look quite as sharp as on my desktop monitor. I'd say, maybe 85% as sharp, so it's usually barely noticeable. The other thing is that the soundcard doesn't have all the mixer capabilities you might expect to find in a desktop. I don't know if this is common in laptops and I sort of stumbled upon the issue. But I got around it by purchasing an external mixer from the Guitar Center.

I initially intended it only as a travel companion but have since begun using it in my recording studio (with Cakewalk Music Creator). Oh, and to play SimCity (which doesn't work on Vista!) All in all, I am quite satisfied with it.

The seller shipped it out immediately and it arrived by FedEx or UPS (I forget which) in a matter of days (two or three, as I recall -it was quick).

I bought one of these laptops two months ago. It has been working just fine. Today Microsoft told me that the license is not valid. It has a valid certificate of authenticity on the back but does not have a second "refurbished" CoA. When I look at the internal System Properties/General tab it says "XP Corporate" which means it was covered under a volume/site license which can not be transferred or sold. I will probably have to buy a fresh copy of XP ($150) and re-install.

Before I made the order I checked to see that the advertisement specified "Genuine Windows XP". I also checked the CoA when it arrived. When the Microsoft updater offered to run "Genuine Advantage" to check the authenticity I confidently thought "sure, go right ahead." Now every time I restart I get a big message that says I am a victim of software piracy. I expect the operating system will eventually simply stop running.

I purchased this for my Ten year olds Christmas present and we love it. I didn't want to buy him a new one until I saw how he was going to treat it. This works great! It connects to our wireless network, and any other unsecured network we find while traveling, with the greatest of ease. I'm very happy with it.

I just got this computer and I love it already. The keys are made from very soft rubber and the size of the letters are big enough for me to push every single individual buttons. The best thing is that it has wifi connection that immediately connected to my router. It has a CD/DVD drive for movies and music. It even has all the microsoft office applications for school or projects. The only problem I have is that it's a Windows 2000(which I will be upgrading to Vista), and the touch pad is not very sensitive to touch so I have to press down on it a little more than on my old computer. I would recommend to someone else though.

I bought this for my nine year old nephew for Christmas. It is a great computer. It was in "like new" condition, and was exactly as described. The screen was large and of good quality. It came in nice case, well packed.

I would definitely purchase a computer like this again.

I got this in December 2012 and by the fall of this year, it was having a major issue and I was told it is probably the mother board. I hadn't, and don't use it that often, so there is no reason anything of the magnitude of a mother board should be going out on it. It also is very slow in connecting with Internet Explorer and sometimes dosen't connect at all, necessitating that I shut down and redo the whole thing. I contacted Amazon and they deferred, saying that it's a third party seller and would not help me in any way. For it to go down in less than eight months, with only very mild use, is ridiculous! I'm no computer expert, far from it, but even I know that I should not be having a problem this severe, in such a short amount of time. I know I will not buy from this company again and I recommend to others to steer clear of this company.

Turns out that it was the mother board. It would have been 350 to repair it and I only paid 200 for it. I say again, DO NOT buy from this company!

Well, there are a couple of problems with this laptop. The microphone stays on all the time and I keep getting a white screen for my background. I do realize these are probably software/driver issues, but it is very annoying. This may explain the very low price I paid for the laptop. Otherwise, am happy with the timeframe of the arrival.

C655D-S5130 TOSHIBA C655D-S5130 TOSHIBA C655D-S5130

C655D-S5130 TOSHIBA C655D-S5130 TOSHIBA C655D-S5130In all fairness this was not bought on amazon but the exact laptop was bought at walmart.com. We even got the 2yr drop break spill warranty from them. The laptop was wonderful for the first few weeks. When we tried to use the webcam we noticed it was very dark. In about another week the laptop began to get very slow, next it would jamb up and you would have to restart it. Finally in another week the blue screen of death appeared with error message. We were told we had to contact TOSHIBA as it was still under warranty. (Just over a month had we had it by now) Toshiba tried to do some stuff over the phone and then the tech said that it was a bad hard drive, that it happened alot if there was a bvad batch and it would have to be replaced. He said he would e-mail me the info. Well it turns out that it is going to cost us 25.00 to mail this computer back to them. You know I would not complain if the laptop was out of warrenty or older but we hadn't had it for just over a month. No idea if it will work when it comes back or for how long.

I work at a computer shop and got one of these to chuck due to the damaged power jack. After destroying the drive and beginning to tear the machine down for recyling, I figured I'd attempt a repair and perhaps see what it's capable of. So I repaired the jack, threw in 4GB RAM, and reloaded Windows on a new hard drive. At first, it seemed pretty decent. I didn't have very high expectations but having a Atom N270 based netbook I use frequently, I had some expectations for the single core processor. Oh was I wrong...

Generally speaking, it wasn't too bad. I'm sure the 4GB of RAM, no paging file, and a clean install of Windows really helped out. However, this system gets bogged down entirely too easily. The latest drivers all around, latest flash, etc... flash video playback was practically nonexistent. Local HD video playback was equally poor. And even simple multitasking would cause the system to shutter and freeze momentarily until it had time to catch up.

Now, I know this isn't meant to be a powerhouse. It's basically a netbook in a 15.6" case. However, let me bring my previous netbook back. I have a Dell Mini 9 running Windows 7, 2GB RAM, and a generic 16GB SSD. While this lil system will get bogged down frequently, it seems to play back most flash-based videos tremendously more smoothly than the much newer E-240/HD 6310. This completely baffles me and honestly sickens me that even the latest low-end processors from AMD are essentially the same performance as Intels Atom's from a couple generations back.

OK, well I got a bit off topic there regarding the CPU. A bit more with regards to the laptop itself. All in all, the case and materials aren't too bad. Plastics do have a cheaper feel to them, but I find many current Toshiba's share the same plastics... Over-all build quality isn't bad though. Everything seems to fit together nicely. Being such a simple laptop, there's not a whole lot to creek or be wrong.

Audio and video are fine. The screen is your standard 15.6" as most any laptop shares now of days (it's already been removed and placed in a Dell N5030 :P) Speakers are fine too. Not your high-end harman kardon you find on some previous models, but decent sounding for what they are. However, there is NO WEBCAM... Here I thought all laptops had webcams today! HAH!

Battery life is quite good. Being a netbook underneath, expect similar battery life. I've gotten 4 hours quite easily out of this laptop under basic usage (casual surfing, occasional video, lots of chatting online). Also remember this laptop was used before I got my hands on it!

And finally, heat. I find this quite disappointing. The fan runs constantly. While the laptop itself doesn't heat up too much (to the touch) the CPU runs way too hot in my books. Everything I see points it runs at about 55*C to 75*C depending on what's being done. Max temp for the chip is 90*C. I confirmed the fan was fine, no obstructions/dust, even repasted the heatsink (which helped a little)... But still, much hotter than I should be running and I suspect it'll be the death of these.

So in short, stay away from this laptop. Spend a little more and at least get the duel core model. Or heck, as much as I discourage used computers, a nice used laptop would be substantially better for the price!

DELL Inspiron 1720 17" Widescreen Notebook, 2.0GHz INTEL CORE 2 DUO, WiFi, 4GB RAM, 320GB, CDRW/DVD

DELL Inspiron 1720 17' Widescreen Notebook, 2.0GHz INTEL CORE 2 DUO, WiFi, 4GB RAM, 320GB, CDRW/DVDRW+DL, Webcam, Bluetooth, Windows Vista Home PremiumI ordered a Dell Inspiron laptop 1 1/2 years ago and it worked great until recently. The screen went black and the system would not start. Turned out that the video card had failed.

I contacted Dell customer support to activate my next business day warranty and after more than a week I have gotten nowhere with them. My claim has been "escalated" twice with the same excuses and refusal to fix the problem. They claim they have no video cards in stock and I will have to wait 2-3 weeks for a replacement card, 2-3 weeks for a loaner system, or 2-3 weeks for a replacement system -basically my NEXT DAY warranty is anything but.

I explained that this is a mission critical system and a 2-3 week delay is unacceptable given the high price I paid for the next day warranty. I offered to take another make or model of graphics card and even offered to go buy the card myself if the agreed to pay

for it.

They refused to help in any way. So, I am left with a useless laptop for 2-3 weeks until it becomes convenient for them to honor the

warranty. I will never buy another Dell product again and recommend that others who are not technically experienced with fixing computers or that need a "mission critical" system that they look elsewhere because Dell cannot be relied upon to fix broken systems in a timely manner.

Dear Users,

I have just commited a blunder by getting this trouble home. The Inspiron 1720 has caused me so much anxiety and waste of time for me. The blue screen popsup and keeps restarting. the updates of the VGA drivers dont fix like its mentioned in the dell support site and the support team doesnt have any answers either. The system hasnt been properly tested b4 it was brought out and I have been denied exchange with another model. I bought a new sony vaio and it works fine. rot in hell inspiron 1720.

After paying Dell nearly $600 to fix their problems in May 2010, this computer has now failed again with the same problems. My computer guy told me to call it a lesson learned and stop wasting my money fixing it. I ordered an HP. No more Dells in this house after this piece of trash.

I agree with the other reviews. I bought the Dell 1720 laptop online after a bit of research (not enough obviously) and I have had noting but problems. Blue screens, video card crashes, incompatible software. This laptop cannot perform the simplest tasks without struggling. This product should be recalled and blacklisted.

The after-sales support was horrendous no one knew how to fix the laptop after hours & hours on-hold with Indian Call centres. Once elevated, they could do nothing further, not even a refund or exchange. I will be sending them a legal letter shortly, considering the amount I paid and the promises made.

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF112FX/B 16.4" Notebook PC - Black

Sony VAIO(R) VPCF112FX/B 16.4' Notebook PC - BlackYou can get the specs on this computer by going to and typing in the model number VPCF112FX.I recommend this Sony VAIO Notebook only because it is really good value given the price/performance mix.

The hardware chassis is well constructed, with a full sized keyboard featuring an ambient light sensor to provide back-lit keys and auto adjusts display brightness for optimal viewing.

The display is vibrant.

The system boots up in seconds--way less than 60 seconds--I clocked about 17 seconds. And you can start typing and loading programs as soon as the desktop appears!

VPCF112FX comes installed with a 7200 RPM 500 GB Seagate Momentus HDD. It is a superb hard disk drive and you will not hear any noise coming from it.

The system fan is nice and quiet. Some notebooks have loud fans, this one is very quiet.

The nVidia graphics are very awesome. Graphics display has no lag. I would like to have seen 1 GB of dedicated video memory but the standard 512 MB is plenty for most programs.

The HD audio sound and speakers are crisp.

There are a few issues you need to know before deciding whether it's right for you.

1) Sony VAIO Technical Support lacks the know-how to resolve minor software issues: a) the Sony VAIO Care and VAIO Update utility software has numerous program bugs and every time I try to convey the issues to Sony Technical Support they are totally inept at resolving the issues much less reporting the problems for future product fixes; b) the Alps Touchpad Control Panel for VAIO which runs in the taskbar has a bug which causes it to "hang" on system shutdown, Windows 7 resolves the "hang" by performing a forced shutdown of the filename Apoint.exe. It is a small but annoying issue that I have reported in emails and phone support but I don't think Sony's tech support really cares about this issue and customers will have to hope that a new version will resolve this minor bug.

2) There are two points in the product specs that need clarification: a) the system comes installed with 4 gigabytes of DDR3 memory running at a maximum speed of 667 MHz. The system can be upgraded to 8 gigabytes of DDR3 memory running at a maximum of 1333 MHz. You will not get RAM speed 1333 MHz from with your factory installation unless you buy from and order an upgrade;

The specs are misleading and appear as follows:

* Installed : 4GB (2GBx2)

* Type/Speed : DDR3/1333MHz

* Maximum : 8GB

b) the system comes with three (3) USB 2.0 ports, one of these ports is a combo port for eSATA/USB 2.0.

The specs are misleading and appear as follows:

USB Port(s) : 2 (USB) 2.0, 1 (eSATA)

If you have an external USB HDD with a eSATA port, you are going to love this combo port! Data moves lightening fast.

3) The Blu-ray combo optical drive shipped in the factory installation is way too slow given the CPU and memory in this system. I purchased this system for DVD video editing and burning. But the specs do not indicate that the DVD burner can only burn at 4x max speed. The technical specs are confusing and lead you to believe that 4x pertains to the Blu-ray speed.

The specs are misleading and appear as follows:

# BD-R DL Read : 4x max

# BD-R Read : 4x max

# BD-RE DL Read : 4x max

# BD-RE Read : 4x max

# BD-ROM Read : 4x max

# Blu-ray Disc(tm) Support : Read Only (BD-ROM)

All it says in the specs is:

# CD Support : Read / Write (CD/-R/-RW)

# DVD Support : Read / Write (DVD±R/±RW/±R DL/-RAM)

Sony could easily have installed a 16x DVD burner/40x CD burner at a marginal price increase I think given the drive is a Sony Optiarc BD drive which they manufacture at a nominal cost I'm sure--so if you want a faster DVD/CD burner you will need to order an upgrade at to get a faster combo optical drive.

DO NOT GET ME WRONG, I AM VERY PICKY, THIS IS A GREAT NEW MODEL FROM SONY. SONY JUST NEEDS BETTER TECH SUPPORT PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO CUSTOMER FEEDBACK AND FIX SOME VERY MINOR VAIO UTILITY PROGRAM BUGS.

MSI Computer Corp. G Series X460DX-291US 14-Inch Laptop (Black)

MSI Computer Corp. G Series X460DX-291US 14-Inch LaptopThe video card is definitely the weakest link in this guy, but it's overall a great laptop. I upgraded to a solid state, gave it a little more ram and an i7, and the computer is awesome...so long as I don't but too much strain on the video card. That being said, since people usually like to know "can it play..." yes, it can play tons of games that are out there right now, but a good way to put it is don't try BF3 and go ahead and rock borderlands 2. BF3 was entirely too tasking at low detail and I was getting terrible framerate. BL2, on the other hand, plays nicely at medium graphics. I'm sure older games wont be an issue, but those are my .02. Ah! And the battery life is a huge perk. Were I to do it again would I get the same laptop? ehhh...probably not, but that's just because alienware now has a 14" laptop out with GDDR5 graphics and the same battery life. If gaming was not an issue and I never wanted to do it, then I suppose I would get this again because of how easy it is to lug around everywhere...I just wouldn't have upgraded all the goodies.

This is a great looking laptop. But it has terrible sound, the two speakers are noisy with high bass music. Its very plastic and not very durable. I've have it over 4 months now, and it has 2 cracks in the body. The body its to glossy in my opinion and leaves lots of finger prints. Over all it has good aspects, but I would consider other pc for the same price.

Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV 15.6-Inch Laptop

Dell Inspiron i15R-1633sLV 15.6-Inch LaptopI am surprised at the negative reviews of this little lap top. It is attractive and more importantly worked out of the box. After booting, I went immediately to Windows update and downloaded 61 updates and all loaded successfully. This little beast

then recognized my other system computers and downloaded music and software for various printers. I have been able to load and run older versions of Microsoft Office, Dragon Naturally Speaking, download video and music from the Teaching Company and and Amazon as well as update Skype..... The keyboard is perfect for my rather

weak touch, but not overly sensitive. Multiple open programs work quickly. I was expecting that an i3 would be slower and have hesitancy with all that I threw at it

but it just churned on. I have not tested the HDMI port yet but will update the review later.

One reviewer mentioned that the Windows 8 update would be problematic, but I don't think so. I see also that the links for the 15 dollar rebate AND the Windows 8 upgrade for 14.99 have been restored and I was able to register this computer at Dell Advantage.. no problem.

The service tag is present both on the box AND below the battery. A manual of the computer's specs can be easily downloaded at DELL.

I really do see more rapid data transfer with the USB 3 ports. There are four USB ports not three and the aforementioned HDMI.

This is my sixth or seventh Dell computer in the last several years. While they all have some battle-scars (mostly due to my travel and bad habits) and a few naggling problems; they all can still function. This computer is the least priced with the most power and ease. The sound is a bit weak and tinny but is easily remedied with a stereo connection.

Thus, I would rate this computer an outstanding value, working well out of the box

and exceeding expectations. I am uncertain if the Windows 8 upgrade will be a benefit or an aggravation as this computer segued into our home network Windows 7 premium with ease and perhaps unnecessary updates are just that!

I sympathize with those that received a problematic or DOA computer. Last year the same happened to me with another internet vendor (Tiger.....)and it really has taken a lot of time and effort to deal with it.

My opinion would be to give this laptop a try: Amazon will always back up their warranty and it would not be difficult to ship a defective unit back.

Good Luck!

Update: I just tested the unit with respect to the HDMI port functionality. I went online and streamed a lecture I had downloaded from the Teaching Company. I then projected via the HDMI port of the 15 R 5110 to a Sony internet TV. The laptop performed extremely well in both connecting to the WIFI and streaming in real time and the HDMI port to the TV via a generic Amazon HDMI cable. There were no buffering issues, hesitations or drop outs and the quality of the picture was excellent. I had to fiddle with the Sony TV controls a bit to get the audio to come thru, but when it did it was excellent. The quality was equivalent to the AV output I get from my Blue ray disc player playing ordinary DVDs. No complaints. I hope this is helpful for all of those who have doubts about this little i3 laptop. I am not a gamer but laptop is a good companion and appears to be very reliable to specs. It does not run hot. I posted a review of the generic 15 R 5110 from May 2011 in the comment(3) section of this review. I hope this helps.

Got this a few days ago when I ordered it from a black Friday deal(yeah so that offering was not a scam, some people did get one). It was a Christmas gift so I wasn't planning on opening it. After reading the 4 reviews for the product on 11/29 I decided I better open it and check it out...cause if it can go wrong, it will...that's my luck.

Anyway, I opened the box with a fair amount of trepidation, and it was in there, so far so good. Next I unpacked it and plugged it in waiting for the blue screen of death, smoke, hard drive clicking, a total lack of activity, or anyone of the myriad of other signs indicating issues with the product.

Well after holding my breath for a few seconds the machine started right up, went through its initial use procedure, got online through my network and is now being updated. PERFECT, works great! No ISSUES. Was just what I ordered and arrived as described. Now I can't guarantee it will still be working in a few months, but right now I am a very satisfied buyer.

To address issues in other reviews:

1) I bought it with windows 7, it came with windows 7, I didn't buy it for any windows 8 upgrade special so no points off there.

2) Not repacked came new in a sealed box, no points off there. I must point out that one reviewer complained that no one checked his laptop to make sure it was configured correctly prior to shipping and another complained that his had been opened, so it comes down to how do you please everyone? Me, I want mine unopened please.

3) A reviewer said his did not work, mine did so no points off there. Who knows maybe he forgot to hit the start button. This one doesn't automatically turn on when opened unless it's already been turned on...hey I've seen weirder things than that, like the guy who emailed brighthouse from his home computer to complain he couldn't get online from his home computer.

Bottom line I have a working Dell I3 with 750GB hard drive, internet access, and it is a 15.6 in laptop running windows 7. I have what I ordered, it works fine, so 5 stars.

I ordered my computer on Jan 8 and it was delivered on Jan 16, that is super fast for an order from Hawaii, with free shipping! The computer arrived in excellent condition, brand new. I plugged it in and followed the prompts and was ready to download my programs and use my computer within 2 hours. The keyboard is a little too flat for my liking but I can get used to it. The cursor jumps all over the place but I will find a fix I'm sure. Good deal for $472, free ship to Hawaii, 6gb ram, 750 hard drive and intel i3 processor. I love it that it came with Windows 7 since I'm not ready for Windows 8. Will update review later.

PS...to keep cursor from jumping all over when typing, press Fn and F3 keys to lock the keypad. Good to go!

See UPDATE below, dated 3/24/13. Original review 12/12)

I needed a basic laptop that was less than $500 and was dependable. I went through no less than 3 expensive HP laptops (around $2500 each) that were all lemons in less than 2 years, and had to hassle each time with the company from which I purchased them because I also bought an extended warranty. After my 3rd HP laptop crashed for the second time, I decided to buy a relatively inexpensive computer from Amazon.

This was $470 with free shipping. I bought the Dell Inspiron because I really like my Dell home computer which is also an Inspiron but has a wireless keyboard. This laptop loaded up in no time at all. In less than 10 minutes I was on my work website and printing to my wireless printer. It already had MS Office 2010 installed, so all I had to do was enter in the product key. I purchased MS Office 2010 from Amazon for $94 and it came on a disc and allows downloads to 3 PCs.

This laptop has a 15 inch screen which is larger than I really needed. For this reason, it's also a little heavy, but that doesn't bother me. Today I sat in an easy chair with the laptop on my lap and, surprisingly, it never got hot after working for 9 hours from home.

I like the keyboard and large touchpad which gives my wrists plenty of room to rest while typing. If there is not enough room for your wrists to rest, the wrists end up resting on the edge of the laptop and can get really uncomfortable. This laptop doesn't have that problem.

The one disadvantage I found, which may not be a problem for most, is that the power cord plugs into the left side of the unit. While it's still 8 feet long, with the plug being on the left side and my outlet located to my right, it didn't quite fit into the outlet located across the room. I solved this problem by plugging it into a surge protector (which will no doubt be better for the unit to protect it from surges). I still don't like the cord hanging over my legs, it would have been nice to have it plug on the right side or in the back. I consider this a minor nuisance.

It is Windows 7 and has a CORE-i3 which is plenty fast for the work I do. The keyboard doesn't light up, but the display light is bright enough so it doesn't need it, even in dim overhead lighting. It has more memory than I'll ever need, and also has DVD/RW.

I'm happy with my purchase. I'll never waste my money on expensive computers, especially HP, again.

UPDATE: 3/24/13

I am sad to report this computer is a LEMON. It crashes every week when I am in the middle of a program, despite my running Webroot Spysweeper daily before I power it off. It crashes in different programs, like MS Word, my work program, amazon.com, etc. The Dell touchpad also fails to work many times, despite my changing the sensitivity. It is frustrating to try to scroll down, only to have the screen stay in one place. Maybe not all of the Dell Inspiron laptops are lemons, but I certainly bought one. Next time I'll stick with local Best Buy and get the warranty.

Dell Latitude D600 14.1-Inch Laptop - 512MB RAM, 30GB Hard Drive

Dell Latitude D600 14.1-Inch Laptop - 512MB RAM, 30GB Hard DriveThe Dell Latitude D600 is really a nice little laptop. It has numerous great features like built-in wifi capabilities, 512MB of memory, a highspeed processor that makes this laptop just speed along. I think its only flaws-and minor ones too-is the limiting 30 GB hard drive that can get filled up far too quickly and it's small screen. While 15.6 is a standard size, it can be hard to read sometimes nontheless.

Yet this laptop is a great bargain for the price as is. Still, once I got it I decided to upgrade the hard drive and get a mouse to replace the sometimes troublesome pointing stick. If you need a good laptop but don't have a major budget, this is the one to get.

HP 2000-2a20nr 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP 2000-2a20nr 15.6-Inch LaptopI love this laptop. I work in IT, no I'm not a 20 yr veteran but I know a good pc at a good price when I see it. A couple things I'll say about performance. Boot times seem fast to me, but I'll admit I'm used to my SLOW old laptop. 4g of ram is excellent, PLENTY for a web surfing email type user. So far it is sufficient for mid grade power users in my experience. I was able to run vmware (for those who dont know it's a software that allows you to run multiple operating systems simulatensously in different windows, for example Windows 7 and Windows XP). I have ran an XP virtual machine while working off my Windows 7 pc at the same time. It was very smooth transitioning, I was honestly surprised by this. (Note: I wasn't running demanding applications on the 2 systems.)

I'll admit the second day I bought this I got a shutdown error twice, but I hadn't shutdown incorrectly. This has not happened since, over a week and a half later. For the price it has a good sized monitor, battery life seems good to me but I plugin almost all the time, webcam and mic are nice for skyping. I've never owned a webcam and am very satisfied with the preinstalled software. I am not a hardware expert but I know the processor is decent. Considering my performance has been good I'd say the processor is doing it's job.

I don't do a lot of pc gaming, but I have tried some decent free to play games like Offensive Combat (a google search can find this) and the frame rates are good enough for me. I have not tried anything graphic intensive. I am also an avid musician. That said I have not had time to install Pro Tools or Ableton Live yet, but I will update later with my experience.

The ports are sufficient. I think maybe an extra usb port would be nice but 3 gives me what I need. HDMI port is also a plus. I bought this product from amazon (http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-HDMI-Adapter-Cable-Meters/dp/B001TH7T2U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346614854&sr=8-1&keywords=hdmi+to+dvi) and it works great to extend to my external monitor. I use an external hard drive so the 500gb is unnecessary for me, however it is a huge amount of space and would be great for others.

The only other thing I can think to mention for any rookies is that 64bit Windows 7 is the "newest" windows operating system other than Windows 8 which will be released soon. 64bit is "better" than 32 bit. Here's why from microsoft themselves. "The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system." Click start, right click on Computer, select properties: to see what operating system you currently are using.

Have a great day everyone, remember: "Everyday you have some trouble, when you worry you make it double."

** UPDATE: I added a video of me playing bass to give an idea of what this mic/webcam can capture. You can also see an intro fade and maybe 1 or 2 transitions between clips. This is the software I was talking about that comes for the webcam. PLEASE NOTE I AM USING COMPUTER SPEAKERS AND AN EXTERNAL AUDIO INTERFACE TO PLAY THE BASS THROUGH THE COMPUTER. YOU ARE NOT HEARING THE SOUND OF THIS PC'S SPEAKERS.

First of all, I'm no computer genius. I wanted a laptop that could run Reason which is a music program for producing drums and much more. I was told by two employees from different stores that this laptop would not be able to run it. This is bullshit. Works just fine. And for everyone else looking for a decent computer for cheap, buy it. Is it the fastest laptop? No but it's fast enough. I've had no issues with the internet. I've watched videos and downloaded music with no problems. Any customer service rep out there will tell you that you need the "holy shit" computer to do anything. I promise you that this isn't true. Hope this helps!

Dell Studio XPS 1640 15.6-Inch Obsidian Black Laptop - Up to 3 Hours 8 Minutes of Battery LifeOkay, so how many laptops can you find with a 15.6" screen, 1080p resolution, and a decent graphics chipset for under $1000? Not many! This laptop met all three of these needs for me. It came with enough RAM that I don't need to upgrade it until the 8GB of SODIMM modules become ridiculously cheap. The video chipset M96XT (AKA Radeon 4670) has pretty decent performance . There are just way too many other laptops out there that have 1080p screens and an Intel GMA chipset, or low resolution 1280x800 screens with decent video chipsets. This laptop has both high resolution and a good chipset.

I recently took it to a LAN party to play Team Fortress 2 and it ran beautifully with all the settings turned up to high (60fps+). My last laptop died because the CFL backlight failed, with the LED backlight that should never be a problem. It's also super bright. I usually have it set to a quarter of the brightness and it's still pretty bright.

If you don't like the disk I/O speed (I think it's fine) you can always put a SSD in this as it's a standard SATA disk drive. There are USB ports on the left AND one eSATA/USB on the right, so you can use either one.

My laptop actually did have a gigabit network adapter (not the 10/100 listed here) but no jumbo frames support :( Typical with Broadcom.

Oh, and Windows 7, 64bit is amazing. You have the full 4GB of system memory and 1GB of video.

Cons?:

No scroll lock button, no pause/break button. Not sure how if there is some hidden Fn shortcut to get these. But who uses these really? There's no Fn num-pad, but really, I never used that. The wireless enable/disable switch is a capacitive touch button right above the keyboard. It's easy to accidentally hit it and turn the wireless off and not realize it.

This Dell Studio XPS 1640 was a very good buy. Its battery lasts a little less than three hours when browsing the web and some light work in Word with the help of Dell Extended Battery Life. All the newer games I've tried have very acceptable framerates with most settings at High. Om most older games such as Oblivion and The Sims 2 I can leave the options at Very High and I haven't found any noticeable slowdown.

Very nice laptop. I shopped obsessively. I looked at many different laptops in this size/power class and ended up with this one. I'm very pleased with its looks and performance, especially for the price. The 1920 x 1080 screen is very nice. The keyboard has a nice feel. It gets warm but not excessively hot. My only complaint is with the optical drive, it is very noisy and it seems to spin up for no apparent reason sometimes. This is a desktop replacement for me and it also needed to run 3D games reasonably well. It runs Half Life 2 with everything cranked and runs my Realflight 4.5 Simulator very well also.

Purchased this computer a few weeks ago for my son who is heading to college and we have been very happy with it. Sleek, responsive, and able to handle gaming and media applications with the well-above-average video card, memory, display and processor combination. All for under $1000.00? Impressive. A fingerprint magnet, which bothers some, but is not a big deal to me. Battery life is average compared to the other laptops I have owned, but acceptable, and I am confident, but admittedly have not looked, that an aftermarket upgrade at battery is available. I have seen complaints that it runs hot, but have not experienced that, at least not hotter than any other laptop with a dedicated video card running during intensive applications and certainly not uncomfortably so. The fan is partially blocked by the monitor, but does its job, and for long sessions of gaming I would recommend a secondary cooling device for any laptop. I have also seen at least one review indicate that the video card was not good for gaming, but other independent reviews of the specific card and pc configuration, and my own experiences, refute that, this pc was built with demanding gaming in mind, while not sacrificing portability or versatility.

I have only one beef with the purchase. Amazon no longer price guarantees its products. This machine dropped in price $35.00 shortly after I purchased it (within a week). I still had it, unopened, and contacted Amazon about a price credit, and was basically told to pound sand. The most frustrating thing about that was I could have simply returned it for a full refund under the 30 day return policy for unopened computers, and bought another one at the new price, discounting my price savings by the 15 dollars or so in return shipping costs (I do not think the return policy covers that), and when I pointed that out to Amazon, I was invited to go ahead and do that. To me, it appeared Amazon was effectively banking on the fact that I would not go through such hassle for such a "small" savings. And they were correct, but only because I did not want to be empty handed for my son's 18th birthday. So they won my business with a good price on a great machine, but lost my respect as a company for such poor customer service. I make many internet purchases, and absent a serious reason to do so, will not be shopping at Amazon in the future.

EDIT REVIEW after I wrote this it got me worked up all over again so I contacted Amazon a second time and low and behold I was given a 35 dollar credit! While they deserved the smack on the nose with a rolled up paper they got for how I was treated the first time, they likewise deserve a treat and an attaboy for eventually doing the right thing. Amazon you have won back my business.

This is the first Dell i purchase since ever, I was expecting the experience i received when i got this great PC, and i got it.

Pros: Light, excellent performance, great LED display (It has better resolution than the M17X from Alienware), i love the glowing buttons, strong case, GREAT MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE.

Cons: Lack of cases and Backpack's for this size of Laptop, Glossy finish leaves fingerprints all over the PC, it is hard to keep it without them, When playing a few games it gets very hot (Dirt 2 on Medium graphics), because of Dell applications it takes a while to get it started.

It has a great value, i purchased this laptop at a great price and i received more than expected, A+ purchase, will get another Dell like this one when i get my next purchase.

The only thing im waiting to find is the leather finish from the case, never able to find it!

HP Black 14" Pavilion Beats sPecial Edition dm4-3099se Laptop PC with Intel i5-2450M

HP Black 14' Pavilion Beats sPecial Edition dm4-3099se Laptop PC with Intel i5-2450Mthis laptop is perfect... people say that the audio is no different on this laptop then any regular laptop... but that is not true. if you know how to mess with the sound settings, youll figure out that this laptop has very high quality sound. better than ive ever hear before. its super fast. love the bluetooth. i play the music from my HTC Rezound via bluetooth. sounds great. really good range as well. runs games very well. hd video looks amazing. the core i5 is awesome. no problems at all with the speed. if youre thinking about buying this... do it. i wouldnt recomend buying it from amazon though. the shipping is harsh on the laptop. i bought mine from walmart for $758

I just got this laptop from Walmart and I can't believe the speeds I can get. The Intel i5 is really fast and the battery life is better than average I would say. I have to agree on the other reviewer on the audio. It is better than all my laptops I ever had! It is very clear and it is really great when watching Netflix, playing video games, and especially listening to music.

The laptop does not have a dedicated graphics card which is a bummer but the Intel HD 3000 graphics card can play all my steam games well and a couple games include: Portal 2, team fortress 2, Just cause 2, and even the new counter strike, which may say looks great! I can get about 2.5 to 3 hours of gaming on this laptop which is above average for gaming. I did not buy this laptop for gaming cause I already have a rig that can do it all.

The performance on this thing is great! I like how the machine has office and outlook starter installed cause as a high school student I don't have to worry about buying Microsoft office. Every program opens up quickly and makes my life easier.

Also I like the red backlit keyboard which adds a more value look to it and I must say the red makes it look more beautiful than a white light for the keyboard.

I get about 4 hours of watching HD movies on this machine and the beats audio makes it enjoyable!

This laptop was well worth the money I paid for and if you have any questions ask away!

I purchased this laptop for school after I had purchased a tablet. I didn't like the tablet, even though there were reviews from many saying it was perfect for college classes. I opted to buy this laptop and gave the tablet to my husband. What initially geared me to choosing this one was the backlit keyboard. I knew I wanted a keyboard that lit up because there were times I was doing homework in the dark cause the little ones were sleeping or I was in the living room while the others were watching a movie (I know I should be doing my hw in another room, but I liked the movie! haha) The fact that the keyboard lights up red was an added bonus, it's awesome, I love it. The fact that the light is not bright is a plus.

I also love the fact that it has a fingerprint reader. My husband and I both have our own profiles on the laptop and with just a swipe of a fingerprint, it will switch profiles. The only thing is that sometimes the fingerprint reader will have some trouble reading the print. It will let you know that you need to swipe your finger slower, then it will need a longer swipe, then move over to the right... that did get a little frustrating, but just the fact that it has that option is cool! You can also choose what fingerprint you want it to read.

The sound it ok, it's not as loud as I had expected. I did think because it was a Beats edition, it would be loud, clear, and have some bass, but it sounded like a normal laptop to me. Would be nice if it was a little louder.

I like the look of the laptop as well. The flat black is awesome and you can't really see many fingerprints as you would on another laptop. It's sleek, fairly lightweight. I do like the fact that it has a cd/dvd player.

Overall, I think I made a good choice. It's fast enough for what I use it forschool, pictures, web surfing. I would recommend this!

Lenovo Y480 20934FU 14-Inch Laptop (Dawn Grey)

Lenovo Y480 20934FU 14-Inch LaptopI bought this from Lenovo's site about 6 months ago. It's worked out of the box, and has worked since. The package was shipped from China and took 2 weeks to come. One thing that was difficult was the drivers for adjusting the brightness. This did not come with an OS DVD on it. I'm not sure if it had one on the hidden partition as I formatted my drive with a fresh install of win7. I did backup my laptop into an image file before that. Make sure you download the network drivers on Lenovo's site and copy it on a usb flash drive or somewhere where you can get it after if formatting your harddisk. This laptop came with other software installed and I wanted to make sure nothing was on my system. I saw another post about not working when ordering from Lenovo. If your system does not work when you first get it, return it right away.

Got it after going trough a lot of other brands. After a partner show me his, I wanted one. Awesome screen, awesome processor, nice video card, I use a lot of ilustrator and photoshop. This machine runs it really well, no complains with the factory specs. The most impressive thing is the battery, 5 hours in the lowest brightness level. Cooling is quite good too, no heat trough the palm rest, and its quite light too. All in all, good purchase. Cons, well not many really, maybe the charger gets a little hot, buy is quite small too.

I was looking for a cheaper alternative to replace my aging MacBook Pro. Fully understanding that I wouldn't be getting as high a build quality as an MBP (and hoping to save a bundle of money in the process), I pulled the trigger and ordered one of these. It arrived dead, complaining there was no bootable device. This probably happens a lot, because the packaging LeNovo uses is absolutely pathetic. The laptop was shipped in a very flimsy box with the computer wedged in between a couple small pieces of styrofoam on either side of the notbook. That's it. I'm pretty surprised that the computer didn't arrive with a few dents the way it was packaged. Anyways, I called Lenovo support, and spoke with a gentleman who took my details, provided me a case number, and then attempted to transfer me over to another department for an exchange. I was then bombarded by advertisements for a free $25 supermarket card and a free gas gift card by an automated system, then disconnected. Confused by what had just happened, I called back the number I was given in case of disconnect and got the same advertisements. It appears the LeNovo rep not only gave me the wrong number to call, but also transferred me over to the wrong number. I called back the main support number, and spoke with a different guy. He gave me a different number, and then transferred me. While trying to enter in my number to the irritating automated system I was disconnected again. I tried calling back the new number I was given, and it just rang forever with no answer. So for the third time I called the main support number and actually ended up talking with the same person again. He apologized and tried to transfer me in directly to the correct department, but was unable to do so. Instead I was given yet another number to try. By this point I had received a dead computer and wasted an hour just trying to talk to the right person. Maybe the dead computer was a fluke, but there is just no excuse for the joke that LeNovo calls customer service. Anyways, after an hour of a half of my life being hung up on on and waiting on hold, I had completely lost faith in Lenovo. If this is the level of support offered to someone who was shipped a brand new dead computer, what is a regular warranty service call like? When I finally spoke to someone who could help me, I said if you cannot ship me a replacement overnight then I would like to return the computer. She said they do not ship replacements overnight. I got an RMA number, sent the dead laptop back, and will be taking my business elsewhere. Hopefully they Lenovo won't botch the return like they have everything else.

Update #1 7/1/12: Yep, they botched it, why am I not surprised? I ordered a bluetooth mouse with the computer, and it was set to ship a week or two after the laptop shipped. When I told customer service that I wanted a refund on the defective laptop, the rep assured me that the mouse order would be canceled. Well, I just received shipping confirmation on the canceled mouse order, and my credit card has been charged. I'm still waiting for my refund on the laptop as well.

Update #2 7/9/12: For those who are wondering, the computer was purchased through LeNovo's website, not Amazon. I really, truly wish I had bought this through Amazon, because I would have had my refund and been done with this weeks ago. If you must buy a Lenovo, go through Amazon or a retailer who has a reasonable returns process. I am just posting this review on Amazon for the benefit of others. As of today I still have not received my refund from LeNovo for either the laptop or the mouse. Last week I filed a complaint with the BBB. I received an email from the "Customer Advocate and Complaint Resolutions" department about 3 days later, but when I try calling the guy who emailed me he is never there. Going though Lenvo "support" is a hopeless endeavor. I sure hope Lenovo is enjoying the interest free loan they took out on my credit card. What a racket!

Final Update: Things got much better once the BBB was involved. I finally got my money back after a month of waiting.

unfortunately I did not get to test this computer at some local store and got an idea about the screen quality.

on paper this computer has excellent specs for its size!!!! but the moment I turned the computer on, I noticed that the screen is very dark, and the colors off :( I played with the settings for hours and it did not help. I connected the computer to a monitor to see if it is the screen or the graphics card etc. In a nutshell I concluded that it is the screen. I called the lenovo customer service, and after an hour of connecting to the computer and running tests remotely, I was told that "it is a new computer, with a new screen. it just comes with that (strange) coloring and brightness, and there is nothing they can do about it" . I sent it back to the seller, and lost $200 in the transaction for shipping and restocking fees etc.

1the screen that all y480 series come with, it is the cheapest screen I have ever seen

2if it was a faulty screen, then it was the lamest customer service I have ever experienced

other than the cheap screen it is a good computer ... if the customer service was helpful or if they could replace the screen I would have kept this computer. it has excellent specs for its size, but cheap screen coupled with cheap customer service made me change my mind about lenovo.

It seems like PC companies are lowering their standards and competing with each other to produce the flimsiest disposable computers ever ... Unless you want a disposable computer, I would not recommend lenovo (except thinkpad series), hp, dell, compaq, asus, and even sony!!!

I bought this laptop, and at the same time purchased an SSD with the intent of upgrading the hard drive.

Despite many attempts I could not install windows 8 with a clean install on the SSD. I contacted Microsoft support and their team spent no less than 4 days attempting to install Windows onto the SSD with the brand new Y480 Ideapad. After 2 days, the call center assigned me the best technician available at a tier 2 level of support. The tier 2 technicians routinely perform about 10 Windows installations per day. They usually take the most difficult install cases. Using remote applications, they virtually monitored the entire install until boot. They ultimately could not install Windows 8. They concluded that the issue was my Lenovo laptop.

I contacted Lenovo support. I was continually disconnected from calls after waiting on hold for long periods of time (this happened 3 times). Despite taking my phone number, none of the employees that I worked with called me back. I escalated support to two supervisors and to the manager of the customer support literally the person that sets procedures for receiving calls.

During my calls, I discovered that there was a known issue with the Lenovo BIOS preventing users from making Windows 8 installs. Despite acknowledging this, I was not offered any support or suggestions as to how I could solve the issue with the BIOS. I was told that to receive any more assistance, I would have to pay for premium support from the software team. The hardware staff was rude and not at all interested in actually supporting the Lenovo product.

While this was going on, I read online forums and discovered a 'whitelist' maintained by the BIOS that only allows certain system configurations. Based on my readings on the internet, I believe the whitelist limits upgrades to the wireless chip for example, to only a few manufacturers / products with a particular serial number. Any other upgrade will not be integrated correctly by the system. A forum even posted a non-whitelist version of the BIOS though this is out of date and crashed someone else's computer.

I speculate that the whitelist also has Windows activation codes that prevents clean installs of windows on the machine.

Overall, this was a very frustrating experience. Though I was never able to install Windows 8 on the SSD, I was able to use imaging software to backup and restore the HDD onto the SSD and essentially clone the hard drive (Not at all a straightforward process, I think due to particular configurations of this laptop).

If I had to do this again, I would not have purchased this laptop, though it is very reasonably priced, and has great hardware... The reason to buy from a large brand name like Lenovo (or anyone else Dell , Toshiba , Apple, etc) is that when things go wrong, they support the product.

Well the support is lousy.

In the future, I would go with a small business laptop builder based on the internet. Though these companies are smaller and don't have name recognition, I am certain that customer support would be MUCH better, there would be no weird proprietary black lists on the BIOS I faced a similar issue with a Dell workstation I bought a couple years back related to a CPU upgrade, and I ignored my own advice from back then... Generally small custom builders companies tend to be priced reasonably as they don't have a name brand to back them up they may sell 'Sager' notebooks for example. The name brands are irrelevant though, because all the internals are literally commodities. And I would rather use a Sager motherboard without any tampering of the BIOS than a Lenovo / Dell computer with proprietary crap added to 'differentiate' their product.

In the end, since I got the darn thing to work, I kept the laptop with my SSD, but definitely not dealing with this hassle again.

Lenovo G570 43349EU 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black Textured)

Lenovo G570 43349EU 15.6-Inch LaptopI have been using this computer for about a week. So far, it has worked very well. It is fairly peppy, but not fast. I have had one Blue Screen reboot, but I don't believe that it was the machine's fault. I am pretty sure that it was a 32 bit program that I had loaded that did not want to play nicely with Windows 7.

The keyboard is a joy to use. It has no perceptible flex.

The case is rigid and feels well-constructed. I do have issue with the cheap optical tray. It is made of thin plastic and feels very cheap. I am uncertain how well this optical tray will last.

The LCD is washed out, but is is serviceable in using for most daily tasks. It is bright, but I don't feel comfortable using it for photo editing even after adjusting the colors as well as possible.

The sound is weak, at best. I adjusted the software settings and was able to get fairly usable sound out if it.

One thing that I am very disappointed in-NO HDMI output!! Lenovo really dropped the ball here. It would be easy and inexpensive to drop one of the USB ports and include an HDMI port.

The loaded software contains very little "bloatware". It was easy to set up and everything worked very well.

Overall, it is a good basic computer. It is a good value, IMHO, compared to competitor offerings. I researched many machines priced $500-600 and I feel that this is the best value.

I was looking for an inexpensive Windows laptop to run Quicken. I've benn using iMac for most applications for over 3 years and have just upgraded to Lion. I did not like iBank or other Mac financial apps.

Office Depot had the Lenovo 570g on sale this week for $399, my price point. Set up was easy. I've installed Quicken and downloaded transactions from 5 accounts. I also installed Turbo Tax and got 2011 out of the way.

I've enjoyed the Chrome browser that was bundled. I was surprised I had to download Adobe Acrobat Reader, but this was easily done. I'm looking forward to a walking tour of my apartment when I next Skype with my out of town daughter and grandchildren.

I don't see a downside to this pc for the casual user. I'm a retired IT professional who enjoys easy to use applications. Windows is easier to use than when I abandoned it 3 years ago.

So far, the computer is exactly as billed. It seems nice and fast with the Intel i5 chip. The case looks nice and the display looks good.

I have to say that I absolutely hate that they don't include a Windows 7 disk with it. It uses the Lenovo 1 Key recovery system, so you will need to create your own recovery disks for the inevitable day you need to re-format or replace the hard drive and re-install Windows. The file is 32GB, so it took 5 DVDs to make the reboot disks. If you have an option to pay a few bucks extra for the Windows install disk, then do it.

i bought this laptop with no reason on mind, just a laptop to have it in case of travel or while i stay at home but without use the desktop. I choosed the Intel i5-2450 configuration (wich is almost my i5-2310 of my desktop) and i'm surprised, its fast, it's big (not extremely big but big) and also it's very light, i'm totally impressed how light weight this laptop is, and even better it's a very whisper laptop (almost don't make any noise at all)

For someone who wants a fast laptop to explore the internet, to watch pictures or videos, movies, play some games and do some office work, this is your deal! It comes with 4gb of ram and 500gb in the HDD.

I'm in love of lenovo and specially this product (i own also a G460 14inch laptop) wich also is great one!.
