Sony VAIO VPC-Z213GX/B 13.1-Inch Laptop (Black)

Sony VAIO VPC-Z213GX/B 13.1-Inch LaptopI have owned this machine for about a month now. It is very fast with the best screen I have ever seen. The design is very simple and almost zen like with an understated poly carbon coating. The machine is made in Japan which is unusual nowadays. In my opinion this is a piece of art that also functions extremely well.

it is above my expectations , every thing is amaaaaaazing. the seperate deck for cd and hd show is very practical. i like it very much. i recommend it to every one.

Buy Sony VAIO VPC-Z213GX/B 13.1-Inch Laptop (Black) Now

I purchased a vaio vpc-z computer two years ago. The first machine would spontaneously reboot every 2-3 weeks. The first onsite repair left the machine unable to start. Over the next year the machine was returned 4-5 times. Turnaround was very slow taking weeks to months. Sony finally bought the computer back. Foolishly I bought another. It has functioned better but the screen developed black lines several months ago. I was traveling and wasn't in a location for onsite repair. In view of the weeks required for a factory mail in repair, I called and asked if onsite repair would be ok in a month... which was shortly into the extended warranty. I was assured onsite would be acceptable. Two days ago Sony set up an onsite repair. Today Sony calls and adamantly refuses onsite repair. Not only is tech support incompetant but now it appears that one cannot rely on their committment. Be very careful with any verbal promise. The computer is OK but Sony service is simply nothing short of disaster.

Apple 13.3" MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M (Z0JH-2.13-4GB)

Apple 13.3' MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320MUPDATE (April 2011)

It's been nearly 6 months since I bought this machine, and I still love it. However, if you're thinking about buying one and you don't need it right away, I suggest waiting. CNET and others suggest that Apple will update the Air this summer and equip it with Intel's new Sandy Bridge processor, which will be a huge step up in processing power over the Intel Core 2 Duo that's in the current Air. It's not likely that Apple will raise the price; their normal pattern is to add features and power but keep the same price.

My original review (with minor edits and one new part at the end):

* * *

I purchased this exact configuration (the maxed out 13") a few weeks ago. It's my first Mac.

There are lots of cool things about the new Macbook Airs. But what stands out most to me is the performance gain from an SSD instead of a spinning magnetic hard drive. It boots up from cold to ready in under 10 seconds. Seriously. It shuts down in about 4-5 seconds. Of course, you don't need to shut it down and boot it up from cold every time just shut the lid and it goes to sleep in 1 second. Open it later and it wakes up just as you left it in about 1 second. Really. Windows laptops have this same feature, but in my experience it doesn't wake up about 1/4 of the time, so I stopped using it. But it works perfectly on the Mac.

Reading from and writing to the SSD is very fast, whether you're installing programs or loading files. The difference is striking compared to my Dell XPS laptop, which has a 7200rpm hard drive and Core 2 duo processor with a higher rated speed.

Now that I have a laptop with an SSD as the main drive, I will never go back to one using a spinning hard drive it's yesterday's technology and just doesn't perform well, compared to this. Of course, part of the performance gain could well be due to the Mac OS X. OS X seems more stable and refined than Windows 7 (and I like Windows 7, though I'd like anything after the disaster that was Windows Vista).

The Air's integrated NVIDIA 320 graphics handles all my needs very well, though I am not a graphics-intensive gamer or video editor, just an average user.

Battery life is really exceptional. At this moment, I've been running my MBA 5 or 6 hours since the last charge, and the battery meter still shows 44% remaining. Since I bought it, I have gotten at least the rated 7 hours of battery life every time. This, too, is due at least in part to the SSD. Regular hard drives use a lot of juice they have motors that physically spin a magnetic platter 5400 or 7200 revolutions per minute. With SSD, there's no spinning disk and no motor, hence longer battery life. [update april 2011: battery life over the last 6 months is consistently at least 6 hours if I'm using the air intensively, 7 or more for light use (web browsing, word processing)]

The MBA runs cool most of the time. After I use it for a few hours at a time, the bottom gets SLIGHTLY warm. This is a huge improvement over EVERY OTHER LAPTOP I've ever owned or used, which get VERY WARM or even HOT.

I've only heard the fan come on ONCE the first day, when I was installing MS Office using an external DVD/CD drive. Other than that, my MBA has been completely silent and cool.

[update april 2011: the fan comes on more often that my initial comment suggests, in particular whenever doing heavy writing or deleting of large quantities of files to the SSD, such as when installing or uninstalling MS office. however, it remains true that the MBA's fan comes on MUCH less often than the fan on my Dell laptop at home or my Lenovo laptop at work, and it is definitely true that the MBA runs very cool most of the time, and when it gets warm, it's much less warm than my Dell or Lenovo laptops]

Once I complete my transition from Windows to Mac, this MBA will be my main home computer. For average users like me, it's plenty powerful enough. At home, I have it plugged into an external monitor (which requires a $20 adapter), an external mouse, plus I have an external USB drive for backups and an Apple Super Drive (external DVD/CD). I slightly regret buying the Super Drive; Amazon sells Samsung drives that perform better and cost about $30 less.

The everyday experience of using the 13" MBA is like that of using a regular Macbook, Macbook Pro, or other "serious" laptop. What I mean is, when you're using it, it LOOKS and FEELS like using a "serious" laptop, not a laptop that makes compromises to achieve ultra portability. But when you take it with you somewhere, THAT'S when you notice how wafer-thin and feather-light it is.

And for something so remarkably thin, it feels very sturdy. Build quality is excellent.

I read a lot of other reviews by long-time MB users, many of whom are disappointed that the MBA doesn't have the backlit keyboard that Macbooks have. I've never had that feature on a laptop, so I don't miss it. But for people who do, you can get an LED lamp on an adjustable arm that plugs into the USB port not a very elegant solution, but functional and inexpensive Amazon has some good ones pretty cheap.

This is probably not a huge factor in your decision, but you might be interested in knowing the sound quality coming from the headphone jack is excellent. I did an A/B comparison between my MBA, my Dell XPS, and the Lenovo ThinkPad I use at work. I used high-end headphones to listen to a track encoded in iTunes at 320 bps on all 3 machines. The sound quality from the MBA's headphone jack was great, as good as my iPod touch, and way better than the Dell or Lenovo.

On the other hand, tiny speakers built into the MBA are no better than the average laptop speakers.

[update April 2011: when I wrote that the built-in speakers were average, I hadn't used them much, and hadn't compared them to the other laptops I use. since then, i have used them more, and it is clear to me that they are better than the speakers on my other laptops]

If you're thinking about buying a MBA, I have a few suggestions.

First, go to an Apple store or Best Buy and see one in person. Play around with it.

Second, make sure you know all the options available at time of order. The 11 and 13 inch MBAs can be ordered with upgrades (bigger SSD, faster processor, more RAM). But, once you buy a MBA, you may not be able to upgrade these components later. (Apple says you cannot. Some user forums say you can. I'd rather not take my chances.) So, you should probably opt for as many of the upgrades as you can afford at the time of initial purchase.

update april 2011: my Dell xps laptop is 3 years old and on its last legs. For work, I need to keep one foot in the windows world. I was thinking of getting a cheap windows laptop for this purpose, but then learned about boot camp. Boot camp comes on all new macbooks, including this MBA, and allows you to create a windows partition on your SSD or hard drive. Then, you can install Windows 7 or Windows XP on this partition, and any Windows software you might need. When you boot up the macbook, it'll let you choose whether you want to boot to Mac OS or to Windows. If you choose Windows, it runs Windows natively not in an emulator and therefore it runs at full speed.

I did this last week. Creating a windows partition and installing Windows 7 went very smoothly. Installing software, such as Office 2010 for Windows, went very smoothly (and relatively quickly due to the fast write speeds of the Macbook Air's SSD). Since then, I've been heavily using the Windows side and going back and forth between the two OSes and it works really great. Even though the Macbook Air is not a powerful machine by today's standards, it runs Windows 7 and Windows applications very very well. It almost perfectly replicates the experience of working on a Windows laptop (except that Mac keyboards do not have home, end, page-up, and page-down keys). All of the peripherals I use with Windows laptops work with the Macbook Air, whether I boot into Windows or OS X.

At this time, I have fully migrated to the Macbook Air as my main computer. I'll be retiring the Dell soon and most likely never buying another Windows machine.

I have had a notebook with this exact configuration for a little over a month. I have been a Windows user since the days of Windows 3.1 and a Linux user since at least Red Hat Linux 6, so I've written this review from that perspective. I still haven't made the "switch" completely as I run Windows and Linux VMs using Parallels to use software that is not available for Mac OS X. Anyway, here are some initial thoughts:

Pros:

Very light. While lighter laptops have been available for some time (the Thinkpad X300 comes to mind, for example), you will be hard-pressed to find one that has a 13.3" screen, a 256 GB SSD, and a large and well-designed touchpad.

Certainly powerful enough to serve as your main computer. I have been using my Air as an ultra-portable desktop. At work and at home, I plug it into a monitor and a USB hub that is connected to all my peripherals (keyboard, mouse, external hard drives, Kindle, cell phone, memory sticks etc.). This gives me plenty of desktop space to work with (13.3" widescreen is barely enough to display half a vertical page of text at a comfortable font size), while giving me the power to carry my work with me wherever I go. I normally have 10-20 browser tabs, a few Office documents open, some scientific or data analysis software and at least one virtual machine running. Never has any task, such as starting an application or opening a file ever been bogged down.

The lack of a CD drive, while not a pro, has not been an issue for me. After installing Office, the Adobe suite and some other programs, I have not used a CD drive and will probably not need one for a long time. I am glad that I am not lugging around a device that I don't need. My next laptop, even if it isn't an Air, will not have a CD drive in it.

The trackpad. I love the mouse gestures.

The screen. Very good color reproduction, great viewing angles, excellent contrast. I don't like it that it's glossy as dust is more visible on it, but I can live with the glossiness.

Battery life is great. I don't know how many discharge cycles the battery will last, but currently, I can easily get 7 hours when just writing documents and browsing the web (with no Flash).

The SSD makes a difference. While not the fastest SSD available on the market, everything feels snappy. Boot times are 10-15 seconds, starting applications is very quick and because there are no moving parts, you can safely toss your laptop onto your bed without worrying about a hard drive crash!

Cons:

No Kensington lock slot. There is no real way to physically secure the Macbook Air. This is a well-known issue for the last few years that has even been discussed on Apple's own forums. The fact that Apple has chosen to ignore this consistently makes me feel that their vision is to see the Air as a toy, or as a device for media consumption, not as a laptop for real work. The absurd thing is, some people are so Apple-deluded as to suggest that a "workaround" is to carry the laptop with you wherever you go, even for 5 minutes to go to the bathroom or to grab a coffee. There are third-party devices available that are basically steel pieces inserted through the monitor lid hinge, but none of them work when the lid is closed.

The keyboard. After using Thinkpads for close to a decade, Mac keyboards just don't compare. The keys have very little travel, and typically need to be bottomed out for a keypress to be registered, which reduces your typing accuracy and speed. I get around this by hooking up an external mechanical keyboard whenever I can.

The fan, when it does come on, can be surprisingly loud. Fullscreen high resolution Flash video, 1080p H.264 decoding (with Plex or a similar package) and running quantum computational software is enough to turn the fan on at high speed. Under "normal" use, you are unlikely to ever hear the fan, which is great.

Occasionally, I feel like I am using an appliance. It's a strange feeling for someone who has been used to opening up computers and tinkering with them. Nothing is intended to be user-replaceable. Not the RAM (soldered onto the motherboard, yikes!), not the hard drive, not even the battery.

Apple makes many, many usability and user interface decisions that the user has no convenient way of modifying. For example, as far as I can tell, there is no way to close the laptop lid and ensure that the laptop does NOT go to sleep, without connecting an external monitor and a keyboard/mouse. Yes, there are third-party applications that can enable this, but why can't OS X provide this option to users in the first place? Another example, I love Spaces. What would make it much more powerful is if I could redirect different spaces to different monitors, each with a menu bar at the top. Imagine how much that would increase your productivity. It has been trivial to do this in most Linux distributions for some time. No known way on a Mac. As another example, consider Time Machine. It's great and makes backup super-easy to do. However, there is no way to change the default backup schedule of hourly backups for 24h, daily backups for 1 week and weekly backups forever. How difficult would it be to add an "Advanced" button and allow users to change this schedule? Finally, OS X support for changing key bindings, without the help of a third-party application, is woefully inadequate. Want Num Lock to work? Sorry. The "Home" and "End" keys will not work the way you expect them to (with no built-in way to change the behavior to what you want), and the context menu key found on many Windows-style keyboards cannot be remapped to simulate a right mouse button click. Moral of the story -Yes, Mac OS X is a UNIX, but don't expect the same level of customizability that you may have gotten used to in some other UNIces.

The Apple religion. It's strange how so many people have congratulated me on "switching," as if I have completed a pilgrimage. Whatever Apple has done, one thing it has done very well is convincing users that PCs are irredeemable quagmires and that Macs are somehow infinitely better. A "Mac" is not such a different beast. Nearly everything at the hardware level is the same, except for a BIOS that many PCs still use, while Macs use EFI. "It just works," is also a marketing tagline, not always the case. Macs do get kernel panics (the equivalents of Windows' famed "blue screen of death.") What Macs give you is a tightly integrated package that may not always be the most flexible for your needs. While "Genius Bars," and hip-looking retails stores may be cool, the cost of these frills is going to be included in the products you buy.

Buy Apple 13.3" MacBook Air 2.13GHz, 4GB RAM, 256GB Flash Storage, NVIDIA GeForce 320M (Z0JH-2.13-4GB) Now

This is my second MacBook, and this tiny thing is better in every way than the MacBook Pro it replaces. The only moving parts on this sucker are the screen and the keys on the keyboard. Other than those it's just one big solid state device. It really moves files around faster than any computer I have ever seen before. In several cases I drag and dropped folders with hundreds of megs of files and they just copied in the blink of an eye. So fast that I didn't believe it and had to verify that the files actually copied before I could believe it.

It is really an awesome line of machines and in no way is it a "limited" machine like the Air's used to be. This is going to be my main work machine. It has the guts to do it too. I'm just shocked at how fast it is!

The MacBook Air 2.13 GHz, 4 GB RAM with 256 GB SSD is really a great computer to use. It is really light and faster than expected. The SSD flash drive really makes this a joy to use with the computer turning on very quickly and being very responsive. While being very light is an attribute, the hand rest area can be heard flexing with the slightest of pressure. I recently had to take in the laptop to Apple to have the trackpad replaced because it was acting very erratically after only 2-1/2 months of use. One possibility was that the trackpad area was moved out of alignment because the framing in this area is very thin. Be careful about just holding onto the front edge of the computer where its the thinnest. The other issue with the computer is the fan noise can be rather obtrusive when playing YouTube videos.

Absolutely love the Macbook Air. Light weight makes a huge difference when walking between airport terminals.

4GB memory is plenty for daily computing needs. Matched with a high resolution 13.3" screen perfect.

Would have preferred an ethernet port without having to spend an extra $30 for the USB dongle.

Purchased on Amazon but fulfilled by OnSale which is a subsidiary of MacMall. Fast shipper. No sales tax.

Customer service was very good with e-mail for order inquiry & tracking number.

Acer Aspire 5552-3691 AthlonII 2.2GHz 4GB 250GB 15.6'' Win7

Acer Aspire 5552-3691 AthlonII 2.2GHz 4GB 250GB 15.6'' Win7I got this laptop for a Christmas present 2 years ago, and it's still running fine. Only one problem I've had with it. It overheats very easily. I recommend downloading some software to keep up with the temp. Mine has got up to over 189 F before. So beware. I do use it all the time, but still.

HP Pavilion DV6-7000 15.6" 1080p Anti-Glare Quad HYBRID series, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge GD

HP Pavilion DV6-7000 15.6' 1080p Anti-Glare Quad HYBRID series, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7 Ivy Bridge GDDR5 Nvidia Gaming Laptop in Midnight Black DV6TJust received my new DV6-7014nr (not DV6-7000 as shown on the website) and I am amazed with this machine. For half the price of a Retina display MacBook Pro, you get a machine that meets or beats every aspect of the Apple. If you want to pay for the Apple logo, get the MacBook. If you want serious value for your money, get the HP DV6-7014nr. The July, 2012 issue of Consumer Reports rates it higher than the MacBook Pro (an $1,800 Samsung was number 1, HP DV6-7014nr #2 and MacBook Pro #3). Only one problem with this computer It will not hook up to 5G wireless, only 2.4 and lower. If this is important to you, go with some other machine or custom build the DV6-7000t at the HP website to include a wireless card that hooks up to 5G. Be prepared to pay a bit more money to purchase a custom order direct from HP, plus a couple of weeks (or more) to receive it from them.

Note: This is not exactly the same laptop, but the closest one I could find on Amazon. The processor, video, display, and keyboard all appear to be the same.

When I got this computer, I was looking for a laptop I could use for on-site software development. It has exceeded expectations in almost every way. Here is a breakdown of the components I chose and a few notes:

* i7-3610QM Processor: This processor does nearly as well as my desktop i7-2600k.

* NVIDIA 650M w/2GB: I am able to play Skyrim on Ultra settings. So far every game I have wanted to play has worked very well.

* 1TB 5400 rpm Hard Drive w/ 32GB mSSD: I have this on my desktop as well and as a result boot times and app start up seem faster. This is very subjective.

* 6 cell + 9 cell Battery: The 6 cell battery sits flush with the bottom of the laptop. The 9 cell battery protrudes from the bottom forming a stand of sorts.

* 15.6" Full HD display (1920 x 1080): This is one of the best displays I have seen on a laptop. It is hard to find a full HD display on a 15" laptop these days. I love the matte finish because it doesn't reflect everything behind you. It is crisp and bright.

* HP TrueVision HD Webcam: This is a run-of-the-mill camera, but works well.

* Backlit Keyboard: This is a must for use during presentations or in dark areas. It took me awhile to find the fn-f5 combination to turn it on.

Here are the Windows Experience performance scores:

Processor: 7.6

Memory: 7.6

Graphics: 7.1

Gaming Graphics: 7.1

Primary HDD: 5.9

I have high expectations and this computer has delivered.

UPDATE: Bought this laptop January 21, 2013 and on April 1st it crashed. I've spent the last five days, about 20+ hours, talking with India and the Philippines HP technical support call centers about this machine. First it was to blame Windows and to back-up and do a total system restore. Then the restore partition is to blame because of Microsoft, and then after waiting for a Fed Ex of 3 System Recovery DVDs and ran those and then got another "blue screen of death" about memory, ran another diagnostic and the memory is bad. Last THREE HOURS on three calls with HP and they will now send a box to pick this expensive boat anchor up and in 2-3 weeks I MAY have a working system back. Oh, I paid $350 for the premier HP care pack with in-house repair, but they think it's the actual machine and not the chip, so why waste another five days to get someone out to fix what will need to go back anyways.

I bought a $2K laptop in 2005 from HP and in 2 years it was replaced four (4) times... this is an eery and familiar situation I am in with HP once again...

Stuck with a $1,100 machine, $350 premier warranty and a broken turd of a notebook that I may get back in 2-3 weeks. UGH!

I've had this laptop for only about 24 hours and I've grown to love it! The 2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA Graphics card plays every game I've thrown at it on MAX settings at 40+ FPS (using Fraps). Every category of the Windows Experience Index is 7.0 + except for the Hard Drive which is only at a 5.9 (you can upgrade to SSD if you want a maxed out Laptop). Statistically speaking, this is one of the most powerful laptops on the market right now. I highly recommend it to every Tech Geek/Gamer/Laptop Enthusiast out there.

Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 1

Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch LaptopFirst, if you're looking for a laptop with all the bells and whistles, this version of Toshiba's Satellite isn't it. Still, it's a great unit. The screen is amazing. Crystal clear and sharp. Not overly glossy to the point where you can see who's standing behind you. Movies look amazing on it.

You can get by with the 1 gig of ram it comes with, but be prepared for it to be a little sluggish. Still perfectly usable, but if you really want to take advantage of the nature of dual core (i.e. multi-tasking) then you'll want 2 gig. I put 2GB of Kingston, (2 x 1GB) 200-Pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5300), in the system and it has run flawless.

Very nice touch-pad on this unit and the left-right buttons under the touch pad are just right not too mushy to cause an accidental click and not to stiff that they are annoying. Keyboard is laid out nicely with the "delete" key in the top right corner. Just the way I like it. Movies played perfectly and I was able to burn CD's right out of the box. Vista has a very cool drag and drop CD burning utility built into the OS. Sound system very nice, though speakers not adequate for movies too quiet. But the simulated Dolby Surround for headphones works very well.

Other nice features that other laptops fail to include is a latching mechanism when you close the "lid" and a switch that let's you instantly turn off WiFi. This works very well by the way and stretches battery power when you don't need to be "connected."

The quibbles. If you are going to use this laptop for typing your next novel, you might want to try out the keyboard in your local PC store to make sure you are comfortable typing on it for extended periods. It's a little on the stiff side compared to some others. Another minor grip is no TV out. It does have a VGA out, but if you want to throw the image onto a TV you'll need a converter a simple VGA to S-Video cable for example won't cut it. Also, it only has 2 USB ports. If you plan to use it as your desktop unit as well, you might need a USB hub.

These gripes are minor in my opinion because I don't really NEED them, but to me, it was worth the sacrifice to get this unit at so low a price point.

I'm very happy with the system. Nice to have a Toshiba. Great brand. Everything worked, right out of the box. This one is replacing a Toshiba that I've had for years without issue.

A bought this computer because was one of the best value for the money. The dual core processor is great, 1GB ram look like not enought using Windows Vista (just the OS use 780MB ) so if you plan to use heavy software, I think you need 2 gb for ram.

As usual on Toshiba come with recovery cd (other brand not include this anymore, you have to burn it from the HD), quick install guide, and documents about warranty and toshiba accesories.

The finished look very well, except for the BIG BIG brand name on the lid, maybe somebody like that, not me. The keyboard is white color, the screen is pretty bright so you don't have any problem reading with sunlight. The weight is the normal for a 15.4" notebook, like 6 pounds.

This unit don't come with Card reader, you can see the space for it, but not coming with this model. I thought that thing about just two USB ports was a lie but is true, this notebook just have two USB port on the left side, doesn't have TV out.

Buy Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 1 Now

This laptop is a decent choice for those looking for a budget computer. Hard core gamers, enthusiasts, or anyone else looking for high-performance should look elsewhere. But for surfing the internet, office programs, and other basic applications this is a great choice. The dual-core Intel processor is more than enough to run those basic applications smoothly and quickly. The 120GB hard drive is plenty to keep all your music, videos, etc.

You will definitely want to upgrade the RAM to 2GB (the max) from the 1GB it came with. New memory should cost less than $50 at many online computer retailers and it provides a *very* noticeable improvement in performance. Upgrading is very simple, you open the hatch on the bottom of the laptop, remove the 2 memory modules there (2 x 512mb) and install the new modules (2 x 1GB). For those interested, the type of RAM you're looking for is DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) 200-pin SO-DIMM. Although many of those retailers let you enter the model# and it shows you compatible memory you can buy.

The weight listed here at amazon is 9lbs, but the actual weight is much less. This laptop replaces a 4 year old Dell Inspiron that was really over 9lbs and this laptop is significantly less. I'd say probably closer to 6lbs.

This doesn't come with any of the extras you see on more expensive laptops such as memory card readers, media buttons (like play/pause, forward, rewind, etc), extra USB ports (there are only 2), or things like bluetooth or N-wireless (it does come with B/G-wireless). The battery is also rather short, lasting only about 2 hours, a little more or less depending on the selected power profile.

The DVD drive reads and burns CDs and DVDs effortlessy. I don't use iTunes, so I can't comment on other's troubles with it, I'm sure it will influence your choice if that is a program you use frequently.

The screen is very very nice. Very clear and bright, and has a smooth anti-glare glass(?) covering. The build quality is overall very nice and feels solidly built.

For those interested, the Vista Experience scores are as follows:

I recently purchased this laptop at Best Buy and I am incredibly satisfied with it thus far. The one thing I made sure to do right away was to purchase 2GB of RAM when I got the laptop as mine only came with 1GB total (it had 2 512MB modules in it). This allows me to do more multitasking and have overall better performance (since Vista alone needs nearly 1GB of RAM just to work). I was able to install the new 1GB modules myself without any problem, the owners manual that accompanies the laptop shows you exactly how to do it in an easy-to-understand manner. The screen is brilliant and the keyboard is easy on the hands. I will mainly be using this computer for word processing and internet research (I am currently a full-time graduate student). However, this laptop is also compatible with iTunes and other popular media programs so I can listen to music, move songs to and from my iPod with the laptop, and also watch DVDs and streaming videos online with no problems. It is also equipped with a wireless internet card so you can go wireless with it right out of the box without any hassle.

I've noticed some people here have given this product bum reviews, and I think they must either have too high of standards for a basic model laptop or that they don't really know much about computers and their performance in the first place. One thing I found right off the bat was the multitude of unnecessary software that comes preinstalled with this laptop (as with pretty much all Windows-based computers today). The first thing you should do after turning your laptop on is to uninstall all the software you know you won't be using. This will free up space and increase performance as you eliminate programs you won't need. People interested in buying this laptop should also purchase additional RAM, as my model only came with 1GB. I bought 2GB RAM at Best Buy for $60, and the investment was well worth it. I have no issues with having multiple webpages up, iTunes playing music, and word processing all at the same time.

The people who have bashed this computer seem to not understand that certain steps need to be taken to improve overall performance, especially on base models like the Satellite A205. Toshiba is a great company, and this laptop is no disappointment by any means. I would highly recommend this laptop to any student who is on a budget and needs a computer for school. I would not recommend this laptop to hardcore gamers (the video card isn't built for those as it's a basic model), video editors (if you're doing video editing you should be using a Mac laptop), or those who demand incredibly high performance for complicated programs that need a higher performing machine to run them.

I hope this review helps some people, espeically students who need a quality laptop at a fair price. For people who want a higher performing laptop for gaming or other reasons, I would look to a higher model Toshiba with more featuers. But for basic everyday use (internet browsing, music, word processing, etc.) this laptop is perfect. The only reason this didn't get 5 stars was the lack of a higher performing video card if I do decide to do some gaming at some point in the future. However, since this is a basic model it's acceptable and I'm completely happy with it!

Want Toshiba Satellite A205-S5804 15.4-inch Laptop (Intel Pentium Dual Core T2330 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 1 Discount?

A pretty decent powerhouse laptop for the price, but because of the low price point if has very little software. It's loaded with 'samples' and 'trials' that I deleted pretty much immediately. Loading itunes was difficult for some reason. I had to load it three times, and finally got it load after uninstalling quicktime. Now it appears to be fine. I have heard that toshiba laptops have this problem. I will say that I had heard both good and bad about vista before purchasing, and wasn't really concerned and I've gone through this several times before with everyone running around saying "windows 95 sucks, windows 98 sucks, windows xp sucks". If I had to do over, I would custom order a laptop without vista. Vista actually does appear to suck. It is not intuitive, and I cannot do the most simple task such as "save as" without jumping through hoops and much cursing. I just opened an excell spreadsheet I carry with me on a usb drive and it would not allow me to save it to the computer. I suppose as I learn it my opinion may change about Vista, but for jumping in and working with it immediately, it is a bit tough. Heck, they even hid the shut-down button in a most inconspicuous place.

The one real negative besides the OS, which is not toshiba's fault, is the horrendously short battery life. Carry your power cables with you, you'll need them. You get maybe...just maybe two hours of life at what I would call low level usage. It's on and I'm surfing. Heaven forbid I actually use the dvd drive and really shorten that battery life.

Screen display and size is fine, built in pointing is okay, but Acer's little scroll button is way better than the toshiba's nothing, you'll need a mouse for anything beyond basic goofing off.

I'm not really too disappointed in it, but it didn't impress me as much as I thought it would, even with the pretty decent price.

New add on 5-3-08: I've had this for a whle now and while I've gotten used to vista (used to and liking it are not the same..but it actually does appear to be incredibly stable) but the ONLY thing that I would really change is the pointing device. But to be honest, I carry the power cables and a mouse with it at all times, and the mouse comes out for anything I deem 'serious' computer usage.

New add on 9-26-08: dvd player/burner is toast, and I hardly ever used it. I don't watch movies on this thing, so the inconvenience factor is low, but I occasionally burn stuff so I bought a dual layer external with lightscribe.

MSI G Series GX70 3BE-007US 17.3-Inch Laptop (Black)

MSI G Series GX70 3BE-007US 17.3-Inch Laptophad for about a month and no problems-just some bugs in windows 8. It will game at least an hour and a half on battery (had 26% battery still) with modern titles -DX 10 & 11. Plays Crysis 3 at moderate settings. Wish it had SDD, but at least the HDD is a 7200rpm model. Great keyboard, cam & mic. Plays bluray nice and smooth..and great batt life.

the downs are it weighs 8lbs and windows 8 dims screen during movies no matter the setting. The case shows smudges some but I just wipe it down once a week or so.

Samsung R Series R530-11 15.6-Inch Notebook (Red/Black)

Samsung R Series R530-11 15.6-Inch NotebookI purchased it to use with TV.

It has dedicated Graphic memory from Nvidia & HDMI port, so I choosed it.

Samsung is not famous for Laptp , but it is much better than DELL/HP/Acer in performance per price .

Setup was very simple. Just passoerd/location/language selection only.

Neflix connection is very good, Internet connection is very fast , and speaker was very good.

I purchased PC speakers from Logitek, but no additional speakers are OK .(I returned speakers from Logitek)

Also, it looks gorgeous , and my wife also loves it.

No heat , so do not need additional cooling system.

I purchased below $600 , so it is one of the best choice at that price range.

Strongly recommed it.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE1513KCXS 15.5-Inch Laptop (Silver)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE1513KCXS 15.5-Inch Laptopit looks nice however keyboard is not that tough, can be in pieces! You need to take good care on it! It operates windows 8 and although have i7 and that much of memory it still having issues and lots of updates which runs it slow. Other than that it's okay.

I bought this vaio brand last year and after 4 mths, I got the fan noise problem. It is really heavy noise that it irritates me alot. I am a computer science student who chose Vaio over Mac and I have alot of Sony products with me. But this one is a disaster. I even took the laptop to a Sony tech to have the fan changed, but it did not solve the noise and overheating problem. very disappointing.

I've had this a little over a month now and I can say I am pleased with it. Considering I got it for 350 it was a steal. It does freeze up for about 3 seconds every now and then but it doesn't happen enough for me to hate it. Love that i can play my bluray discs on this instead of having to use a TV. Overall good buy.

Hewlett Packard HP dm1-3025dx - Pavilion Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 11.6" Display / 3GB Memo

Hewlett Packard HP dm1-3025dx - Pavilion Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 11.6' Display / 3GB Memory / 250GB Hard Drive - BlackUPDATE:

-JUNE 24, 2011: Just adding a note here. I've noticed that this thing is very energy efficient. While playing video in full screen, the screen will actually turn off if the show stops and you don't immediately press the ESC button. It turns immediately on with the movement of the mouse or touch of the keyboard. Also the sound will turn off when no sound is coming through. And immediately plays sound without delay when played.

ORIGINAL POST: JUNE 10, 2011

The Good:

-Sharp, Crisp, High Resolution screen makes web browsing more enjoyable. The screen gets really bright. Almost more than necessary. I keep it somewhat dim most of the time.

-Easy short cut keys. (Brightness, 2nd display output options, play-skip-reverse options, volume/mute, etc.)

-Faster than most netbooks.

-Nice hulu app.

-I can play Left4Dead 2 on it. (At low settings, but still impressive!)

-HDMI Port

-3x USB Ports

-Memory Card reader

-Very light. Love the portablility of this thing.

-I get about 5-7 hours of battery life. This thing charges quick too.

-Full size keyboard

-Loud speakers. The quality isn't too bad for a notebook of this size. It's not 1000watts or anything, but its enough to enjoy music or movies at a decent volume without any (or noticeable) disortion.

The Bad:

-Netflix works fine, but stutters in HD. (Although hulu HD video works perfectly fine. Probably not anything to do with the performance of this netbook or maybe I just need more memory.)

-Watching hulu and web surfing pushes the performance of this computer to its peak (90%+ CPU usage, tho i can still surf with no delays or errors occuring. It just gets a little warmer and the fan goes full speed.)

-Touchpad is my least favorite thing about this. I tend to graze it and it jumps my pointer across the screen or causes me to highlight and delete text while i type. Mild issues with regular use, but works fine. Has an on/off option if you double tap the top left corner of the pad.

What can I say. First I'm pretty sure it's the same build as the 3020 model. They have more reviews for this computer there, but I thought I'd show some love to this exact model. I've owned this computer for about a month coming from a Sony 18.4" BluRay notebook it took about a week to get used to the smaller screen, but it's more than adequate. I LOVE taking this computer to my couch, desk, or bed with ease. I've played netflix movies, hulu tv shows, & YouTube clips with no problems at all. And even plug the hdmi to my projector to watch movies.

I think I've covered most of it already. There's nothing else I can think of commenting about at the moment. But I'll update this review as time goes by. I'm thinking of upgrading to 8gb or ram as that's the most allowed.

HP Pavilion dv6-7020 us 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

HP Pavilion dv6-7020 us 15.6-Inch LaptopThis computer is fine...except for the audio. Yes, you read that correctly. Despite the fact that one of this computer's big features is Beats Audio, the volume on songs and videos has a mind of its own and fluctuates all the time. HP recently released a driver to fix the problem, which temporarily worked, but the volume fluctuation began to creep back into the audio about a week ago and is once again in full swing. According to the HP Support Forum, the company continues to work on finding a solution. Regardless of whether the problem gets permanently fixed, I find it totally unacceptable that a computer containing a feature geared towards audio went onto the market with such an awful audio flaw. It's downright irresponsible on HP's part and I am severely disappointed.

I was still using an HP dv1170us (vintage 2005) which is still working fine, but it's dated. I wanted a replacement, so I bought its cousin, the HP dv6-7020 figuring it's close enough of a cousin to my old workhorse that I'd just settle into it like a favorite shirt.

A lot of my favorite features are still there. I like being able to turn off the touchpad (it's a double-tap in the upper left corner) when I'm using a trackball, and I like being able to cut the wi-fi off with a button press when I'm watching movies or listen to music (this is, after all, an entertainment laptop) and save some battery life. An improvement is no ports on the back of the laptop. That's a serious plus in a tight space like a library or on a plane when you can't have stuff sticking out of the back of the laptop and have it up against anything like a wall or seat.

Some features I liked are gone. Instant Play is history, no more turning on the laptop to just use as DVD player hardware and double the battery life like my old laptop could do. However, the battery life is improved enough that it's about a wash. I really liked the actual latch to keep the lid shut too, but that's gone on the DV6-7020.

Some features I like are added, for example the HDMI output for a projector or HDTV, the fingerprint scanner for security and the built in webcam, none of which the old entertainment laptop had.

The laptop feels a bit big after the 14" notebook I've been used to, and the difference seems like a lot more than 1.6" going from a 14-inch notebook to a 15.6-inch laptop. I didn't think the added size would make much difference, but it's definitely noticed. It's okay, but this is as big as I'd go with a laptop. Anything bigger is overkill and sort of ruins the goal of portable devices (which is to be portable, of course).

And I love it!!!!!!!!! Screen is really big 15" and the keyboard is just right. Love the separate number key pad. Typing is a breeze and keys are all logical and feels great. I would highly recommend this model and brand to anyone! Really love it!

Sweet little laptop. Lightweight and slim. Faster than the older Dell laptop it replaced. Keys seem a little close but it's smaller computer. The power cord isn't in the best spot, interferes with the mouse since I'm right handed. There are four USB ports, two on each side, and lots of other plug-ins.

I recieved this item yesterday and i found nothing is working even the processor. Its completely dead. i just wasted my time calling the HP support team. I just returned this item to amazon. I didnt expect this kind of item from Amazon. They didnt even tested the basic things for the laptop. Beaware of HP laptops, dont expect that everything from HP will work. The customer service can help you only when your machine UP.Unlike Dell, HP will not be giving any door service and you have to ship the new item back to HP for service which is even more horrible.

Samsung NP365E5C-S05US 16-Inch Laptop (AMD Dual-Core A6-4400M Processor, 4GB Memory, 500GB Hard Dri

Samsung NP365E5C-S05US 16-Inch Laptop BlackI really like this laptop because its fast and has two 3.0 USB ports for my external hard drive. It also has an AMD Radeon HD 7520G graphics card which performs better than the Intel 4000 that comes with Intel based computers. Overall this is a good computer for a student or casual user.

This is a very nice and speedy laptop -2 core 2.7 gHz processor, 4GB memory, and a large hard drive. In a pinch it could pretty easily replace my desktop PC. The first thing I did was to wipe the drive to get rid of all of Samsung's junkware and Install Windows 8 Pro. For various reasons I would have preferred to install the 32-bit version of Windows 8 Pro, but it turns out that that is not possible, as this laptop has the more modern UEFI firmware rather than the older BIOS firmware. But except for that, I am extremely happy with this laptop.

I received my new Samsung laptop on Monday and have spent the last two days acquainting myself w/Samsung products outside of or other than Samsung Handsets. This system is definitely for the casual-student user. It has its basic functionality as a machine but the feel is somewhat "toyish" and the mouse cursor of course jumps back and forth, all over the screen until you make whatever adjustment necessary.

Additionally, it is fast booting, and playing simple games (although it was purchased for business use), viewing documents, switching between all the gizmo's that Windows 8 has thrown at us. However, I would not recommend this product for the business owner neither the corporate traveler....just doesn't feel like it will hold up to the pressure of multi-tasking needed to run a business or operate w/multi-channel devices simultaneously.
