Toshiba Portégé R835-P94 13.3-Inch Laptop (Magnesium Blue)

Toshiba Portégé R835-P94 13.3-Inch LaptopI haven't had this one very long, but after installing some high end programs (Adobe CS-5 suite, Corel Draw X5, Video Studio pro, and MS Office) and running them, I am very pleased with the results. No problems at all installing or running the programs. I loaded and edited eight high res photos in Photoshop with no problems. The small screen doesn't give me the view or capabilities of my 25" monitor & desktop computer, and I would not like to do any serious graphic design work on the Toshiba, but for what it was intended for, it does very well.

If you would like to see more reviews on the Toshiba R835-P94, look at the Toshiba R835-P81, it is the same computer except the P94 also has Bluetooth and is over $100 cheaper. The P94 is an Amazon exclusive, which probably accounts for the lower price. The P81 comes with 6 GB of ram while the P94 only has 4 GB. The 4 GB of ram is fine for most applications and most users, but I like to max-out my ram. I bought two 4 GB high speed ram modules (a total of 8 GBs) for $46 and the P94 is noticeably faster. Installation of the ram is very easy.

A real shocker was discovering that the battery power lasts almost as long as advertised. Amazing! I have never had a laptop that even came close to this one.

I'm not a "gamer" so I can't speak to its capabilities in that arena, but I have watched streaming movies, and DVD's with no problems. The only negative things that I have noticed so far are that it has a narrow vertical viewing angle. I'm comparing it to my old Sony Vaio which has a larger and very good screen. The other negative is the ton of bloat ware programs that Toshiba loads on the computer. I doubt that you will ever use the majority of them. Sadly, it seems that all of the manufacturers are doing this now.

Overall, the Toshiba R835-P94 is very good computer for the price. Small, light weight and good power.

If you want a compact and lightweight laptop that doesn't compromise on functionality and still looks great (and doesn't cost an arm and a leg), then this one's for you. I've been carrying around a 15.5" Sony Vaio for the past 2.5 years--don't get me wrong, I love that chunker--but it got pretty beat up, the battery life was absolutely horrible, and I dreaded having to lug it around in my backpack all day for classes (I'm a full-time college student). So I started looking for a replacement. Buying the Toshiba Portege R835-P94 was one of the best choices I've made in purchasing technology. Here's my breakdown of the pros and cons:

Pros.

1. It only weighs 3 pounds! I can do curls with it on my weak arm for ten minutes and not feel a thing. (well, maybe that's exaggerating, but it's ridiculously light!)

2. It's gorgeous. The exterior looks black in low light, but every once in a while I'll catch a glimpse of that "magnesium blue," and it makes me happy. Not to mention the slight texturing on the cover makes it look even better.

3. The thing fits into my purse. It's nice not to have to take my backpack somewhere just because I'm bringing my laptop.

4. Battery life! I haven't actually sat down and timed how long it can last, but I do know I can watch a 2-hour-long movie, an episode of The Office, and work on a paper (all in high brightness and volume) and still have a solid 40% left. I can't even describe how wonderful it is to take it out for the day, use it during classes and in the student center, and not have to take the power cord with me. It's fantastic.

5. The touchpad. My Vaio didn't have multitouch, and it had some funny texturing on the touchpad. But this Toshiba's touchpad is glorious. It's smooth and super convenient, and it doesn't jump at all when you try to move the mouse.

6. Speed. It's very fast--I haven't had any issues whatsoever with trying to download things or access "busy" web pages.

Cons.

1. Smudges and fingerprints. Because the laptop's a darker color, dust and oils show up on the keys and cover a lot easier than they do on a lighter shade. But of course you can clean it off regularly if that bothers you. It's definitely not worth passing up this baby for.

2. Microphone placement. I like to Skype with friends and family, and I was a little annoyed to find out that the microphone is located on the front right corner of the laptop base right next to the SD slot. It's easy to forget it's there and accidentally rub over it with my wrist when I'm multitasking with working on a project and Skyping, because then the noise kills whoever I'm talking to. Not a great idea to put that there.

3. Speakers. They do their job, but I can tell the difference between these speakers and my Vaio's. These just sound kind of hollow, and the quality's not fantastic. But hey, they work.

So, yeah. That's what I have to say about the Toshiba Portege R835-P94. All in all, I think it's a fantastic laptop for the price. I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this laptop to anyone!

The Toshiba Portege R835-P94 is a Windows laptop that is fine for wireless productivity in your home or on the occasional business trip, but it is not made to stand up to daily wear and tear of a heavy user. It's a pity, because it's a fast, efficient machine.

BACKGROUND:

I previously owned an indestructible, tiny SamSung NetBook, but after three years of using it 8-12 hours a day the keyboard was finally giving out. I am a HEAVY user, and while I'm not rough on my electronics, they do need to survive constant use and the jostles that come with a daily urban commute. I needed something light, portable, and sturdy that would allow me to be productive ALL DAY and EVERYWHERE on my couch, riding the subway, walking to meetings at work, at lunch in the city, and between sets with my band.

Four months into my purchase and I have many regrets, but depending on how you use a laptop you might not have the same turnoffs as I do.

THE GOOD:

Right out of the box, the Portege R835-P94 seems as though it is a decent MacBook Air competitor. That's not why I purchased it I'm not a Mac fan but when I held it next to my wife's Mac the form factor and weight were a close match, even if this machine is much more plastic-y.

This Portege comes right up to the limit of what I consider portable. Any bigger and it just wouldn't work in tight situations like airplanes. While heavier than NetBooks, this machine is still very lightweight for its size.

First and foremost, I think the battery life is stellar. On a relatively bright, high-functioning battery setting I can get 6-8 hours. It's rare that I ever run out battery unexpectedly and if I do it charges fast.

Second, it is quick. It boots quickly, hibernates intelligently, and shuts down in a flash. I used it for a week with the installed RAM for internet, word processing and spreadsheets, video, and minor image manipulation with nary a moment of slowdown. An easily removed panel allowed me to beef up the RAM in two slots not necessary, but easy to do with Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 Memory Module (CT2CP51264BC1339). (Warning: You will need a special .50 mm Phillips Head screwdriver to open the panel I bought Wiha 26194 Screwdriver Set, Phillips With Precision Handles, 4 Piece!)

The machine is decently ergonomic, with a full-sized keyboard and a slightly off-center track pad with two click buttons. The function keys make sense, and a guide to them overlays onscreen when you press function. I do object to the Page Up and Down buttons being relegated to a vertical row on the side rather than being nested on either side of the up arrow (which is available), but that's a personal preference.

The screen is really bright and clear, though it does glare at some angles and on darker content due to its gloss finish. The CD/DVD drive is a lifesaver, and I marvel at how they managed to fit it in.

I was relieved to find that the computer has hardly any junk software I associate with most major laptop brands. Aside from standard MicroSoft programs, there's not much of anything pre-loaded. If you haven't used Windows 7 before, it is transparent. It has not once gotten in the way of my daily use, and in some instances of hunting for features or settings I think it is a considerable improvement over XP.

THE BAD:

Despite all of my likes of this machine, they cannot overcome the fact that the build quality is cheap. Yes, that makes it light, but it's not worth the trade-off!

My left hinge fell off within my first day of use. I can push it back on, but it has never fit snugly. The battery locks fell out the first time I set it down sharply on a counter at lunch, and never went back in the same. The hinges are weak, allowing the screen to swing with any small amount of momentum or a strong breeze (I'm not joking!).

A few keys are already missing my keystrokes. They just don't depress and rebound fast enough to keep up with my typing I switch to a desktop to write anything lengthy, which defeats the purpose of having a laptop! Also, the trackpad is beginning to show signs of failure.

However, my major complaint is the hard drive. I have had complete hard drive failures within the first 100 days of ownership of every Toshiba product I've bought in the past year, and this laptop was no exception. My old NetBook survived being accidentally punted down a shallow set of stairs and all of the other abuse of three years of daily use. This computer? Three months and a dead HD, right in the middle of my work day no punts! I replaced it with a Solid State Crucial 128 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT128M4SSD2, which I recommend doing RIGHT AWAY if you decide to purchase it. It was as easy to install as RAM, and it only took about two hours to load the factory settings from backup DVDs (which you have to make yourself or order for an additional fee).

This machine can be loud. Not at rest the fan is audible, but not annoyingly so. I read other reviews stating the mouse buttons were loud. This seemed like a trivial complaint to me, but they really are! No matter how gently you click, they make an obnoxiously loud KERTHUNK. The chicklet style keys are also rather clacky, and extremely squeaky since day one (even with a dab of WD-40). The DVD drive is incredibly loud I think prohibitively so if you plan to watch anything. Also, the computer weirdly emits a loud chirp every so often I assumed this was the hard drive, but it continues to do so even with the SSHD installed.

Another minor complaint there is no on-screen overlay when you raise or lower the volume with function keys. I thought for sure something was broken until I Googled it! The sound is decent for a laptop loud, but no bottom end.

Finally, while glossy finishes make for attractive electronics, they also mean you are constantly wiping away dirt and smears. It's no big deal, but if you are the kind of person who needs your electronics to look elegant and spotless this might not work for you. The screen shows smudges very quickly, so keep a microfiber cloth handy in your case.

BOTTOM LINE:

This laptop is probably heaven sent for lighter users who simply want something that will keep them surfing and productive when they need a connection. If that's what you want, I cautiously recommend it though, I do endorse springing for the solid-state HD.

My complaints are those of someone who LIVES on a laptop. It's where I work, play, and create. If you're like me who uses a machine morning until night, who juggles it between meetings and writes thousands of words a day the Portege is just not ready for the task. You'll be shedding plastic pieces, wincing at the loud and squeaky keys, and praying the HD doesn't fail between cloud backups.

I can tell this is not going to last three years it has already broken in at least three ways in four months! If you are looking for a daily use laptop, please use caution (and back up your data)!

Just got this last week and cannot get over the battery life. Given my last laptop had me looking for an outlet every 45 minutes, the all day life on this is amazing. The computer is zippy, effortlessly handled every program I've thrown at it thus far, is extremely light (3lbs), and looks sleek. Basically, I love it.

A few con's:

*hate chrome, the hinges are not my cup of tea

*the eco utility does this weird dimming thing randomly, kind of annoying but I rarely use that power setting anyway.

*backlit keyboard wouldve been the cherry on the top.

Aside from that, no issues so far. Definitely recommend the laptop

Update as of Dec/2012I am not as happy as I was with this purchase, but still consider it to be a good value in this product area.

Reasons for lowering my initial review:

1. Fan runs almost continuously. This has gotten to be an area of huge annoyance for me. I havent really tracked this from the beginning, but one day a few months back I was working and noticed the fan never really stopped. Now, of course I notice it all the time. Had I known this was going to happen, I probably wouldnt have bought this computer.

2. Battery life has dropped significantly over time. I would say it's down 40% from when I first started using it.

Bottom-lineif you are really using the computer to work, like I do, you might keep on looking, and the fan noise will drive you nuts eventually.

Do still love the low weight though!

Update as of 04/20/2012 still extremely pleased with this computer. The Bluetooth was really easy to install and found my cell phone the first time (I have had trouble with other computers). Bluetoothed serveral pix and found the transfer was faster than normal.

I have had this computer for a week now. So far I am really happy. It is very light (I have to carry two LT's)and it fits well in my backpack. The battery life is excellent. I have used it on battery for about 5 hours and it was down to about 1/3 charge when I plugged in.

I also liked the fact I could delete some of the factory installed software-completely. I get sick of all the pop-ups begging you to activate their software. I have had computers where this was impossible (for the average user) and had to live with these popups.

There is not a lot else to say. I am a 'light" computer user (no gaming, or high tech uses) The applications I do run (MS) open quickly so, plenty of memory (4-GB) and the 640 GB hard drive will store all my picures and videos. As I said, I travel a lot and take pix and videos as mementos.

I recommend this PC to anybody who travels a lot and needs a personal PC to take with them. It is an excellent value for money!

One noteif you get one, also buy a padded sleeve to protect it. Being so thin means it is fairly fragile and evidently (reading other reviews Toshiba is pretty firm on their 'damage' policyif you break the screen you might as well throw this one away as the screen replacement will cost as much as new computer. just take care of it and you shouldnt have any trouble)

Good luck!

HP g6-1a60us Notebook PC - Blue

HP g6-1a60us Notebook PC - BlueI bought two of these laptops for less than what I paid for one of another brand 4 years ago, so it's hard to complain about much. The keyboard is cheap feeling, however this is particular to my laptop as my husband's laptop does not have this feeling. The touchpad takes a bit of getting used to as it is flush with the rest of the surface as opposed to being sunken. This review is after only 24 hours of owning these machines, so time will prove out the really important stuff inside the case! Overall, I give it 4 stars for it simply being functional and affordable. I am not a techie, but apparently this is an entry-level processor. Otherwise, it is well-equipped in RAM and storage for the price. Also need to point out that Amazon and FedEx had this order to me in 17 hours, Saturday delivery for $7.98!

This an awesome laptop and it runs so well! Amazon offers the best price plus i got 2 day shipping! I would highly recommend this laptop to everyone!

Lenovo B575-1450A5U - IdeaPad Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6" Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB

Lenovo B575-1450A5U - IdeaPad Laptop / AMD E-Series Processor / 15.6' Display / 4GB Memory / 320GB Hard Drive - BlackI picked up this laptop at my local Best Buy for $299. I read the reviews on the Best Buy site before purchasing this laptop, and the majority of them that had complaints had complaints of encountering blue screens of death within a short amount of time of purchasing the laptop. Others had issues with the sensitivity of the touch pad, but overall there were positive reviews.

While I was removing some of the unwanted software like the Best Buy app, I encountered a blue screen of death. This was because when I restarted to complete the uninstall of some of the programs, it did NOT install the windows updates. Once these were installed, I haven't had a problem since. So once you get your computer, make sure you shut down to install updates, and then commence removing the bloatware.

Pros: Nice screen size, has good enough specs to run several mildly heavy programs at the same time, HDMI port, excellent keyboard (it doesn't have the traditional bracketed keys, but the more embedded buttons like the Mac Books, plus a num pad), solid design, runs very quiet and cool (extremely cool. With it sitting on my lap it does not even get warm.), good battery life if you use the energy management for it, fingerprint reader, facial recognition, and built in webcam.

Cons: Touch pad is a little sensitive, but I came from using a Thinkpad where I used the touch point mouse. It may just be because I need to get used to it. External mouses are always a compromise.

Overall a very good computer for the price.

I bought this because my wife and I are both in school, and one laptop is not enough. I was looking for something to run MS Office and a web browser. This was by far the most feature laden machine in its price range. It has fingerprint lock, webcam, 4GB RAM, and a dual-core processor. Once I got it home, I was pleasantly surprised to see there was no bloatware other than the BestBuy app, so I did not have near as many programs to uninstall as usual. They advertise fast boot ups, and mine boots in about 45 seconds, much faster than my Toshiba. I picked this up from BestBuy for $299 and would gladly make the purchase again.

I bought this laptop back in August for $299.00. WOW! I can't begin to tell you how thrilled I am with it. The screen is clear and vibrant, the processor is fast and it's amazing what 4gig of ram can do. I love the restore feature and the fingerprint scanner. It's light and easily portable, the chicklet keys give it that updated modern feel. It's just so much computer for the money. I'm thrilled.

I recently had to buy 2 budget laptops for business use (see also my review for the

Gateway NV51B15U) and decided on the Lenovo because it's dirt cheap AND has decent specs.

Windows Experience Index: Processor (3.8), Memory (4.9), Graphics (4.1), Gaming Graphics (5.5-faster than my i3 Toshiba!), Hard disk (6.9)

Pros:

-AMD E-processor is fast enough even for basic 3-D gaming;

-Has HDMI and 4GB RAM, which many budget laptops lack;

-Build quality is solid for a budget notebook;

-Lenovo has above average customer service.

Cons:

-This is a generic rant My 2001 Powerbook was 1-inch thin and 5.5 lbs. Ten years later and PC makers still can't give me a skinny 15-inch laptop for under $1,000?!!

-No other cons.

13.3" Intel 500G 4G

13.3' Intel 500G 4GThis laptop functions reasonably and does what it is supposed to. Frankly, I won't run anything more than just a word processing document using mine. I've had it for three months and for the nearly $1000 I was expecting much more. It is ALWAYS overheating. Surfing the web for an hour and a half drains the battery completely while simultaneously heating up to the point where you expect it to melt. DO NOT BUY. I'm so upset with this purchase.

Lo recibi en el tiempo previsto y bajo las características que ofrecia el proveedor, estoy muy contenta con la laptop, hasta el momento no ha presentado ninguna falla.

Dell XPS XPS13-1000sLV 13-Inch Ultrabook

Dell XPS XPS13-1000sLV 13-Inch UltrabookEven a little bad screen and missing sd card slot, I love its beauty so much. It's a outstanding industrial design.

I am returning the laptop and getting a replacement in hopes of receiving a non defective one. I received a Windows 8 error from the first time I logged on and put all my information in. After I finally got through that, the computer (software) was acting up. Programs not working, occasional freezing, wireless connection going in and out. I downloaded a bunch of Windows Updates which seemed to help a lot but the Internet was still just awful.

I do have to say though, with my limited experience with Windows 8 so far, I did enjoy using it. That is why I'm hoping the replacement is free of defects.

As for the physical computer, I've never seen anything like it. The design is awesome. It's much smaller than I imagined. The screen is very clear. Once I got through the updates, the computer moved very fast. The trackpad is really not that bad. If people have a problem with it, use a wireless mouse. The keyboard is great. My prior computer (Dell Latitude Z) had the best keyboard I've ever used and this XPS13 is up there with it.

Very impressive design in person....pictures provide limited justice... My first experience using a ssd drive...neither a hiccup or stall at all and is upgradable. Great ultrabook for my needs....burden less travel great size slightly under 3lbs. Screen is beautiful at front angle views. Wireless connection is reliable and strong. Windows 8 however is a work in progress as I like what was done 'under hood' over Win 7 but the new start mode but requires practice.

Can not believe that this does not have a SD card slot.

USB drive is to inconvenient. Limited memory on 128 GB SSD drive after system software is installed.

At this price...this was a major factor that prevented me from keeping this otherwise decent ultrabook.

Will reconsider the XPS if dell makes a change.

ASUS K52JT-XT1 15.6" Brown Laptop Bundle

ASUS K52JT-XT1 15.6' Brown Laptop BundleI got this laptop at Tigerdirect after black friday for 799 and it hasn't let me down once. Blazingly fast the I7 though clocked at 1.7GHZ will go to 2.4GHZ on one of the cores when an extra push is needed (this is done automatically). Dedicated video card is great, and has handled my editing and video gaming great to this point. Microsoft Visual Studio, and Microsoft Web Expressions both run amazingly fast. Word/Exel/Powerpoint all come up almost instantanious. Battery life isn't the best in the world, but it does have a lot of power settings you can mess with. I however tend to keep it set at High Performance even when unplugged, which is primarily my problem. Overall, awesome laptop, you won't regret getting this.

To be fair I was happy with the power and the graphics of this laptop. It handled my favorite MMO WOW wonderfully. I bought this as a pre-xmas gift to my self. To my horror it crashed on 1/1/2011. A great way to start the year. Sent the computer to Asus 3 days later and they're still repairing it after 16 days. I asked if they can just replace it and said, thats not covered by the warranty. Maybe I was the unlucky 1% but keep in mind, if this thing died on you, you're stuck with a lemon.

I order a 14" Ibook, and i am stunned! This Ibook may be considered out dated...BUT is really great for every day use! Sure you may need to set up for your first Internet's use... but when every thing is all done and put in it is well worth it! I used to be a windows person, but now that i found what i have been missing for rek. time, it feels fun to be on a computer again. AND to top things off most of the service i have been receiving on this product is AMAZING! I ran into a bump with the product its self(battery was no good)i am currently working on getting one...is on the way not at my expense... This is a must have laptop at the price along with uses... This lap top comes with the software you need... you don't need any other software... because its everything you need. I was really hoping this thing wouldn't replace my windows and something to give to my older brother for school. but this devise belly's up to the bar, now i just want to throw away that windows 7. it my be a down grade of software, it is smooth it is speedy.

The product its self comes neatly packed, BEAUTIFUL and clean... devise which i expected had some usage on it but grate. i really appreciate the seller: Narby-Ken I am in-pressed. JUST SO EVERYBODY knows i am not being paid for this review.

Besides the fact that the iBook did not come with the Classic Environment installed as advertised, it has run flawlessly for three months.

I love the keyboard, it works perfectly with a two button mouse and scrollbutton, and it does a bootable backup to a Firewire external drive using Silverkeeper.

Tiger is a very nimble operating system and runs in 1/3 the ram as my iMac and actually surfs the web faster than my iMac.

It's a great little compact computer.

Toshiba Satellite L870-ST4NX1 Laptop Notebook Windows 8 - Intel i3-2348M 2.30GHz - 8GB RAM - 750GB HD - 17.3 inch display1) key board slap: it flexes in the middle, so your fingers skip and misskey cheap nasty keyboard

2) USB ports & headphone socket exactly where a right hander uses an external mouse so you constantly get your mouse hand caught up this is so irritating if you use the laptop for business. It's highly performance negative.

3) function buttons are now secondary ie: you have to press 'fn' at the same time which use two hands, again negative on performance and the lettering is really dark blue so you have no idea wher f1 / f2 etc are!

4) windows 8 is awful a kiddie program for tablets. And the MS outlook version for win 8 does not let you add files to e-mails!

5) win 8 stickers, 'intel inside; are exactly where you rest your left hand. So the edges start to peel up an catch on your hand. Nasty.

6) after 2 weeks I get intermittent 'startup freezes' where the screen shows stripes not promising.

7) poor thing struggles to handle power programs like CAD or photoshop games would kill it.

8) Toshiba pop-ups that want to handle this / that / the other. GO AWAY.

Positives?? well the screen is great, battery seems to last well, and it runs cool-ish.

Bottom line: if you intend to use this more than an hour a day... then buy something else. prob a Sony Vaio.

Acer 15.6" Laptop 6GB 500GB | V5-571-6891

Acer 15.6' Laptop 6GB 500GB | V5-571-6891So far I enjoy my Acer laptop (I have owned it for about one month). It is lightweight and I like the numbers positioned on the right. I have nothing bad to say about the product. Windows 8 is not my favorite running system, but I understand MS has a download for that soon to correct user complaints. The laptop was loaded with a bunch of junk I had to remove which I expected from reading the review from PC Magazine. I wish it had been loaded with some sort of MS office product. This is my second Acer product. I have owned an 8-inch laptop for at least three years that I use when traveling. I can say nothing bad about that product either.

As I write this review from the said device, I must admit I continue to feel the glow of guiltless acquisition of a solid purchase. This is still the best hardware-to-cost value I've found on the net, it runs more intensive programs than I initially had hoped it might, and it has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience learning Windows 8 and this machine. Some things to note are the Acer bloatware, which is easily uninstalled to your liking, and the somewhat unrelenting keyboard. You're going to literally have to break it in. The keys are shallow and a bit tight, and at first there is going to be some resistance. These are the furthest thing from a set of Blue Cherry MX you'll find. Inevitably, they will start to ease up and hit a sweet spot and you will be typing like a stenographer again in no time. The screen is beautiful, Windows 8 is far more enjoyable then you might hear from an overwhelmingly critical tech industry, and the machine is a perfect value for people with light tasks in mind. This thing is also slim and light and will transport in anything conforming to it's modest dimensions. I would surely suggest this computer to anyone.

Toshiba C855D-S510 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / AMD E-300 Dual-core 1.4GHz Processo

Toshiba C855D-S510 Laptop Computer / 15.6-inch Display Screen / AMD E-300 Dual-core 1.4GHz Processor / 4GB DDR3 SDRAM / 320GB Hard Drive / Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW / Webcam / 6-cell Battery / Windows 8 / Satin BlackI just bought this laptop two weeks ago. The mouse and touch pad would not work or lockup once I typed my password to login. It would work sometimes. I did the reformat where you don't loose any thing and took like ten min and now the cursor works just fine. Probably some driver issue.

The speakers are good, dvd drive, Love that it has a built in camera that is clear and crisp when taking pictures.

Windows 8 is something to get use to. Its like a Tablet, you have to install all apps, or buy the software. There is not pre loaded games or templates to write in. We did download games for my son age six and he loves them. Its a great laptop for under 300.00. Glad my cursor works

I just bought myself a birthday present, a Toshiba C855D-S510 Laptop Computer and made a few modifications to it. Now, I did not buy this from Amazon but from another large, nation-wide chain famous for being the showroom for Amazon because this time, they offered a handsome discount on the item and free shipping. But, enough about how to catch a customer; I want to talk about Windows 8 and other marketing horrors.

Windows 8 is puzzle wrapped in an enigma smothered with hubris and served without regard for customer desires. It departs drastically from Microsoft's well-defined workflow in that the Start Menu has been mercilessly (that is, without regard to customer desires) ripped from [stop me before I write again]

Ahem. Sorry about that. I'm actually quite pleased with my purchase. It was cheap, and has everything I [will] need for future use: a 64-bit operating system. I don't game any more, so no need for fancy graphics, but it has a nice enough dual-core processor and a wide enough screen for 16X9 movies, which I do watch. The really nice thing is that it's portable and I can work in bed downstairs and/or take it with me camping, which we do a lot of in summer. The only thing I would change if I could would be to get a larger screen, since I prefer to look at a lot of code at a time and/or web browser or pdf reader windows. It does have a VGA out in the side, so I could use a spare monitor if I had one, but that does defeat the "portable" thing, doesn't it?

And the start menu? Sourceforge project Classic Shell is free, open-source donationware (i.e., free to cheap guys like me) that gives you the option of a classic (Windows 98ish), Windows XP, or Vista/7 Start menu (I picked Windows 7). It put a Start button back on my taskbar (shaped like a shell with the Windows colors) and has a ton of other features and settings that include allowing me to boot directly to the "normal" desktop. I never have to see the Metro interface again (whatever it's called now).

To make a developer's box, I installed the aforementioned Android Bundle and the 64-bit JDK (the one at the bottom; be careful not to mix up this, as it leads to non-understandable error messages), as well as Visual Studio 2010, for which I have a license but not, alas, Visual Studio 2012. I also have held off doing much else until I ghost the whole business with a bootable Clonezilla CD and a 64GB thumbdrive. I can say I recommend all of this highly, starting with the great Toshiba machine itself, especially at a fire sale price.

i had two little netbooks that were on the verge of dying, so i needed an affordable full-time computer STAT. this computer is just what the doctor ordered. it's thin and light, so it's easy to transport, it has a nice big screen and enough RAM to multitask like a champ, and plenty of harddrive space. it starts up quick and loads programs swiftly, and i really like the textured casing.

the only significant complaint i have are that WINDOWS 8 IS A HUGE PAIN IN THE POSTERIOR. really, this is not an OS made for a laptop/desktop machine. it'd be great for a tablet or a touchscreen PC, but it's really cumbersome for this sort of computer, in more ways than one. but you can read about all the reasons Windows 8 is a drag elsewhere, there's tons of people who agree. aside from that, the screen is shiny, not matte, so it collects dust super easily, and also the mousepad is not very sensiitive, but i use a wireless mouse anyway so that hasn't been an issue for me.

overall i feel this is a great laptop for a great price, perfect for word-processing (if you provide your own WP, since Microsoft still expects you to buy them separate from your OS), watching movies (i recommend external speakers tho, as the internal ones aren't very powerful), or freelance graphic art (runs Photoshop with ease!).

Its okay. but it doesn't have HD. I thought it did when I bought it, it's okay though for the money I spent on it. It does the rest of what I need it for.

Dell Inspiron 15R 15.6" Notebook with 2.26GHz Intel Core i3-350M Processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Dri

Dell Inspiron 15R 15.6' Notebook with 2.26GHz Intel Core i3-350M Processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, Mars BlackThe real product name of this laptop, as shown in BIOS and in Windows System Information, is Dell N5010. For its price, this is a good laptop, but it can also piss you off if you are peculiar about things:

1. For no reason at all, the fan will ramp up and whir every 2-3 minutes for about 20 seconds, even if there is no spike in CPU load. This can become really annoying in a quiet environment, such as a classroom or library. I've updated to the latest BIOS (A12), and the problem is still there. One possible way to fix this is using a tool called "i8kfangui", but installing it on Win7 requires some hackery (see the forums on its site).

2. For a 15.6" screen, the resolution is low: 1366x768. Business laptops have standard 1400x900 for 14" screens. I've had one for years and that resolution was great for the screen size. The screen is glossy and will reflect light. Outdoors, it's almost impossible to see anything, unless you hunch over the screen to shade it. POOR vertical viewing angles. 20 degree off the perpendicular direction to the screen, colors begin to shift visibly: whiteout if you look at the screen from above, darkened if you look from a bit below.

3. The keyboard can be really annoying:

silly reassignment of Fn keys to perform laptop-specific functions (volume up/down, Wi-Fi on/off etc.) instead of doing those by pressing Fn+F#. Configurable from the BIOS though.

besides that, the F# keys are labeled a faint blue on black, and are barely visible in a well-lit room. The reflection of the screen on the glossy laptop finish near the hinge doesn't help. The visible labeling is for the laptop function keys (Wi-fi on/off, brightness up/down etc.). This shows how the laptop is aimed at those who don't know what F5 does.

odd placement of the PrintScreen key between Insert and Delete

narrow trackpad buttons, often annoying to hit with the thumb

the arrow keys are too thin, half the height of normal keys

after having used laptops without a numeric keypad for the past few years, the keypad is not only useless; it gets in the way. where I expect Backspace to be, there's now Keypad Minus.

there is no Break key (useful for Win+Break to get the Windows System properties, or Ctrl+Break in command line applications)

there is no context menu key (equivalent to right click on the focused control)

So make sure these things don't bother you, or you'll hate the laptop. Try to get a feel for the keyboard and trackpad at a local store (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Fry's etc.)

I bought this product, it is fast, however the support is horrible. The DVD player has never workers right freezes up even out of the box When I called dell, I got the run around and the long and short of it is that Dell doesn't stand behind their products. The Wi-fi is hit or miss, lucky it works well at home , but at work it doesn't connect and on public networks on the road it is hit or miss on getting a connection.

The unit is a bit of an energy hog, as the battery life doesn't last anything close to what Dell claims. Dell's answer was that I should buy the more expensive battery! The Battery lasts about an hour and a half, with all the power settings set to decrease energy use, and screen brightness turned down.

I would find another brand, Sad since otherwise it is a great computer.

Sony VAIO VPC-EB3AFM/WI 15.5" Notebook (2.0GHz Intel Pentium Dual-C P6100 3GB RAM 320GB HDD DL DVD-

Sony VAIO VPC-EB3AFM/WI 15.5' NotebookI got this laptop for college, and it runs GREAT!! I usually have to do A LOT of research and write tons of papers, so I use the web all the time and have to use a ton of different programs. It updates itself when it needs to, and I LOOVE the keyboard (with the numbers on the side). It is big enough for school, but fits perfectly in my backpack. I ride my bike everywhere, and it isn't heavy. Also, I skyped often, and the image and sound was great.

The volume doesn't go too high, but I wear headphones all the time (and is loud enough like that).

I bought this for my uncle, and the computer works very well with great appearance. The price has been raised, it was cheaper when I bought it. I don't think it worth the current price.

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14117FXB 14-Inch Laptop (Sharkskin Black)

Sony VAIO E Series SVE14117FXB 14-Inch LaptopHave had this for awhile and am just now getting around to writing a review. I got this before the latest Windows disaster came out specifically to upgrade before that. Also, wanted something with a blu-ray player. The blu-ray player feature works great and I was floored by how good the picture quality was when watching movies. The laptop is light enough and small enough that it is easy to travel with. Looking back I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend product if you can still get it with Windows 7.

This is a Win7 version of this laptop, and I love it. The apps that Sony is loading are absolutely cool, and I like the fact that now I can control my other Sony devices via this laptop (PS3 or Sony Media Player). The rest is typical, Intel i5 and BluRay. I don't think I will upgrade this to Win8, but that is another story :)
