Lenovo Ideapad Y560d 0646-2KU 15.6-Inch 3D Laptop (Black)

Lenovo Ideapad Y560d 0646-2KU 15.6-Inch 3D Laptopi like the 3d, as it's not 30 year old shutter glasses , just the polarized glasses like the movie theater uses, it's a shame that there is not alot more manufactures using this setup, as it works good, now i'm waiting for someone to get a TV out with the same set up, that don't cost a arm or leg. and i'm not talking about the old shutter glasses set ups.

as for the laptop it self, it runs alittle on the warm side, could use better cooling, but as long as you are not playing games on it, that push the gpu, or push the cpu tomuch it works fine.

This is one of the best laptop I ever had and I love it!!! I am an IT pro guy and so far have no Negative remarks about this laptop. Haha as a matter of fact I am writing this review from my new Y560d laptop and enjoying every bit of typing on it. It smooth and works like a charm. Super fast! and though I am not into computer games, I do a lot of developing and programming and have many Microsoft tools and applications installed on this, and they work like a charm! I hate people writing bad reviews and giving 1 star because the screen is shiny or because the ideapad logo has a light underneath it etc etc....blah blah stupid idiotic reviews! I would rate this product 5 stars, though it has only been 3 days I am using this product flawlessly, I am sure it will last long. I am a avid IBM/Thinkpad/Lenovo fan and this is my 1st Ideapad from Lenovo. Its smart and there is nothing not to like about it!

PROS: i7 Processor from Intel (Mindblowing), Excellent Keyboard and Touchpad (Works flawlessly), LED superb screen (I hate those idiots complaining about screen resolution is not enough, what do you need a microscope to view your laptop??? get real!). Amazing Graphics and ATI 1GB dedicated Graphics card makes it awesome! 4GB of RAM it came with and can be upgraded to max 8GB (more then enough, you don't need to run High end Mainframe computing here...) JBL Dolby Digital Home Theatre srround sound. Awesome in any laptops I have owned so far! Oh yes the beautiful design and a beautiful Tatoo on the front, makes the laptop look more sexy :) Above all, super quiet and no noise at all!!!

Well I have all praises and more positive things to write about this Y560d laptop and I cannot think of any negative thing.

Cons: None, NIL, Nada!

Ok yes this is a review from only 3 days using the laptop and if anything changes (I am positive it won't) I will update my review!

The computer is great. It has fast speeds on most games as long as it's plugged in, it's great for all of my school work, gaming, youtubing, etc. But it has huge problems. It overheats and crashes if it doesn't have a computer fan which can prove to be a huge problem. It crashes often, but if you take proper care of it it's still a good computer.

This machine is built to withstand almost anything you through at it. The build quality and materials are exceptional. From a industrial design and manufacturing perspective, it is even nicer than a MacBook Pro.

I really like this machine, except for one issue, screen resolution. Apple has proven how beautiful and productive higher resolution displays can make even a laptop. Spending the extra money, weight, and bulk to get a 17.3 inch display should result in more room to work. Because the resolution on this machine is no higher than it is on 15 inch machines, you get a display that isn't as attractive and doesn't fit nearly as much content on it as it could with a higher resolution. This is especially important for content creators and for people that work in spreadsheets, but really it is an issue for all professional users. Apple gets this with their Retina displays, Google gets it with their Pixel laptop, and Dell gets it with their Ultra high resolution series of displays. Hopefully HP will make a higher resolution display available soon on their workstation class laptops.

The only excuse for the screen resolution on this machine is that most people are going to use it in a docking station with external monitors. I have mine attached to 2 Dell U2713HM Ultra High resolution displays. The screen resolution only bothers me when I am using this machine on the road, but then again, that is the whole reason I bought the 17.3 inch workstation.

When you are deciding on which machine to buy, I recommend you consider the screen resolution issue. A 15 inch or even 13 inch machine with similar specs and the same resolution display might save your back and shoulder some pain from lugging this heavy machine around.

As an IT professional I travel often and bought this for frequent travel. I'm so impressed with the performance this may be my main machine. I was nervous about the keyboard feel given the limited reviews I found on othe sites. In fact the keyboard is great!

Very happy with this machine, and as an owner of an Lenovo think pad, iPad2, iMac, MacbookPro 2nd gen, that says a lot! I did upgrade to 8GB of memory and love the SSD in this model.

Cheers!

ASUS N76VJ-DH71 2.4-3.4GHz i7-3630QM 16GB 2TB 5400rpm HDD 2GB nVIDIA GT 635M 17.3" HD Blu-ray ROM W8

ASUS N76VJ-DH71 2.4-3.4GHz i7-3630QM 16GB 2TB 5400rpm HDD 2GB nVIDIA GT 635M 17.3' HD Blu-ray ROM W8I decided for my new laptop to be an ASUS based on some of my friends recommendations. Not this one in particular but they all had old ASUS laptops which lasted them for years without experiencing any problem at all.

I chose this model because I need a lot of hard drive space for my work, and I have always hated to use an external hardrive. For this reason, I am very happy with it. Not only that, but it performs very good in general, specially because it has a good processor and lots of RAM.

There are two things that I'm unsatisfied with, one of them very important. The battery life is extremely short. Even with the screen brightness lowered to almost the minimum, the battery is out in just over 1 hour. On top of that, sometimes it indicates that the battery is not present even though its there and fully charge. Whenever this happens, I am forced to shut down the computer, remove the battery and then plug it in again. This has caused me lots of problems. It could be that this one is defect, but I cannot make an exchange because I live in Europe and bought it in one of my trips to USA.

The second problem is that sometimes, when I turn it on, the fan starts to work and it never stops until I shut it down and turn it back on. I am aware that this could be a software problem, because the day that I received it, the first thing that I did was remove Windows 8 (which is terrible), and installed Ubuntu instead. So it may be that this is causing the fan to go mad sometimes, but because of that experience with the battery, I doubt that is the case.

I hope this helps someone with the desition. When I got it, there were no reviews. I am sure that the next laptop I will buy is not going to be an ASUS

was trying to buy a laptop, not cost too much, but had enough capacity to do digital design work, works great, and video games run incredible

Buy ASUS N76VJ-DH71 2.4-3.4GHz i7-3630QM 16GB 2TB 5400rpm HDD 2GB nVIDIA GT 635M 17.3" HD Blu-ray ROM W8 Now

Dell XPS 17 Laptop, i7-2630QM, 6GB DDR3 Memory, 17.3in FHD WLED AG (1920x1080) Screen, NVIDIA GeFor

Dell XPS 17 Laptop, i7-2630QM, 6GB DDR3 Memory, 17.3in FHD WLED AG Screen, NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus, 500GB 7200 RPM HD, Tray Load CD/DVD Burner, Windows 7 Home PremiumI got the latest XPS 17 aka L702x last month to replace an HP Pavilion dv6. The specifications are,

CPU: i7-2630QM

DRAM: 6GB DDR3-1333

Screen: 17.3in FHD 3D

GPU: GeForce GT555M 1GB

Hard Drive: 640GB

Optical Drive: Blu-ray burner

Battery: 9-cell

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium.

My first impression is that the XPS is huge compared to the HP, even though the screen is just 1 inch bigger. The weight is also substantially greater. The 9-cell battery protrudes from the bottom, making it even harder to fit into tight space. Although the 9-cell is supposed to extend the battery life, I get just under 3 hours in mixed usage. So, the XPS is a desk-top replacement through and through. If mobility is an important consideration, the XPS 15 can be had with the same CPU and screen resolution, and will be a much better choice.

In terms of computing power, the XPS does not disappoint. The i7-2630QM is capable of 8 threads simultaneously, and I have not experienced any slow-down so far due to CPU overload. The GT555M can run all the latest 3D games if the graphics is set to low quality, but it gets really hot and loud, not to mention the quick battery drain. For gaming, a good desk-top remains the best option. The XPS comes with a pair of 3D glass, but I have not had the urge to try it out either for movie, because of the lack of interesting media, or for games, due to the heat and noise the GPU generates. I intend to use the computer for numerical work, and the CPU, the memory system and the hard drives are the key components.

6GB of memory and a 5400-rpm drive do not match well with the high-performing 2630QM, and I had planned to upgrade them right after the purchase. Once the machine arrives and gets its belly opened up, however, I am shocked to find just 2 SODIMM slots. Dell is advertising "up to 16GB RAM" in 4GBx4 configuration, and this is clearly not the case. After some exhaustive research, I finally find the explanation in an obscure Dell customer forum. It turns out that, to save literally a few pennies, Dell has used two different motherboards in the same model: one with 4 SODIMM slots and 3GB of GDDR RAM, the other with 2 SODIMM slots and 1GB of GDDR RAM. I had noticed and got puzzled by the $170 price difference when one stepped up from the GT555M 1GB to the GT555M 3GB. This kind of explains Dell's thought process in the pricing hierarchy. Still, I am upset that Dell fails to explain any of this on its website because there are customers like myself who do not care about the graphic RAM but do want to have the potential to upgrade to 16GB of system memory. I had paid $300 extra compared to HP dv7 for Dell exactly because XPS was supposed to be a premium brand without too much corner-cutting, but I under-estimated Dell's capacity for taking advantage of their customers. In the end, I can only replace the 2GB SODIMM with a 4GB module. The swap costs me $30 after the old SODIMM is sold on ebay, still much less than what Dell would have charged me to upgrade to 8GB memory in the factory.

Upgrading the hard drives, on the other hand, is something that the designers of XPS obviously take into account. The XPS comes with 2 drive bays, with the 640GB drive occupying the first one only. I have a new Crucial RealSSD C300 Solid state drive 64 GB internal 2.5" SATA-600 ready and just have to move the 640GB drive to the second slot before replacing the SSD in the primary drive bay. Unfortunately, these drive bays are covered with aluminum shields that are attached to the motherboard with tiny screws. I strip one of the screw heads by using a driver a little too large. This necessitates some drilling followed by the application of a screw extractor. The whole process is extremely scary because of the danger of breaking the motherboard, and should be avoided if at all possible. In the end, I have to say that installing the SSD is quite straightforward if I had not had the accident with the screw. Once the hardware is in place, I reinstall the OS with the DVD which had cost me $19 extra, and wipe the 640GB drive to use for data. All the drivers are either included in a free DVD or can be downloaded from Dell's support site easily. The applications such as PowerDVD, however, are nowhere to be found. I have to call Dell support line and have the DVDs shipped to me, but they are at least free of charge. All together, the pre-installed softwares including the OS take up 30GB, leaving 29GB of usable space ("64GB" drives really have only 59GB of usable space in another case of misleading vendor advertisement.) on the SSD for other applications.

Once the upgrades are done, I am very happy with the performance of the machine. The SSD really makes a big difference. Windows 7 boots up at under 15 seconds and shuts down in 10. For this alone, I am willing to endure the bulk of the XPS 17 for the dual drive bays. Overall, however, I am somewhat less happy with Dell than HP for three reasons:

1. The HP dv6 just seemed more tightly put together;

2. I did not experienced misleading feature descriptions with HP;

3. I miss the fingerprint scanner on the HP notebook.

========================== Added 9/2/2011 ==========================

I replaced the boot drive on another PC with an SSD recently. This was an older computer and the drive had been cluttered with various files and programs. Reinstalling everything seemed impractical, so I went looking in download.com for a drive-cloning software. I tried Acronis first, but it was extremely buggy and the trial version did not allow downsized cloning. Eventually, I found EaseUs Todo Backup Free 3.0. It worked very well and, as the name suggested, was totally free. If I have to do it again, EaseUs is the way to go.

========================== Added 3/20/2012 ==========================

Although Intel does not officially support 8GB SODIMM modules with the HM67 chipset used in this Dell, intrepid users have tried them and generally found the new denser format to work just fine. As the price for these new SODIMM comes down, I give it a try as well and it works! Now this XPS sports 16GB of DRAM even though Dell has seen fit to equip it with only two SODIMM slots.

I bought a Dell XPS 17 directly from Dell. It came with a defective screen. So I called Dell. The screen replacement was on back order, but they said they could ship me a replacement computer with identical specs immediately. I received the replacement computer just two days later. Unfortunately the replacement computer had severely downgraded specifications. 900p screen instead of the 1080p screen, i7-2630 processor instead of i7-2720, gt550m graphics instead of gt555m.

In every way possible they replaced my computer with inferior components.

I immediately called Dell and proceeded to be put on hold and bounced around for over 6 hours trying to get the issue resolved.

As I write this I am on hold yet again with a Dell representative who is completely unable or unwilling to assist me.

I cannot speak to anyone in the United States for support without paying an additional $250 for some support package

I bought this computer in 2011 and have had nothing but trouble with it. Almost every piece of it has been replaced at least once. I have had three keyboards, and I still have trouble with typing. I have had to reformat the hard drive three times, because Dell techs couldn't figure out what was wrong. I decided recently that I wanted to upgrade the hard drive from 500gb to 750gb, and I thought I would be getting a faster hard drive. Dell gave me the specs on one made by Samsung that they said would fit. I ordered it from Amazon, and it didn't fit into the laptop. So I ordered one from Dell and was told it would be delivered on June 5. It wasn't. The email they sent said to check for a tracking number, so I tried that and couldn't retrieve one. I called Dell and got two different answers: one, it must be in stock or we wouldn't have sold it to you; two, it isn't in stock, and we don't know if or when it will be, but we will find out. Today I get a third answer; it isn't in stock, but the expected delivery date is June 12; since it isn't in stock we don't know when it will ship, but you have to wait until June 12. One suggestion a customer service rep offered today is to buy a hard drive from Walmart or Staples who he assured me would know which brand and model would fit this computer. I don't trust either place to have the right answer. One option is to just buy a new computer, but this one was too expensive to discard after little more than two years. Besides the OS is Windows 7, and I've read too many negative things about Windows 8 to even try it.

PROS: Display is nice, weight not too bad, keyboard is good, speakers are awesome

CONS: Extremely unreliable, battery not great, track pad not good, and some serious hardware issues

OVERALL: This product is not worth your money.

When I bought it, it wouldn't play dvd's. Had to waste hours of my time dealing with completely lame customer service to get it fixed. Even after that, problems continued to pile up, conveniently right after the warranty ran out. USB ports will stop working randomly. The track pad, which isn't good to start with, sometimes will turn permanently on, making typing difficult, or not work at all. Last of all, using Photoshop makes the graphics card (which is supposedly good) crash my computer on a daily basis.

CONCLUSION: I will never buy a Dell again after how I was treated as a consumer.

When I clicked on the link to the XPS 17 to check it out I was skeptic because it didn't seem to be much from what i could see from the specs listed on the site. When I did click on the link I was wasn't let down by the specs listed because I knew this was a laptop that that had the potential to be beefed up. If it wasn't for the good things I've herd about the XPS 17 I would have never clicked the link, and after I did I saw the specs listed in the title weren't even as good as I hoped, but when I checked the other new XPS 17's by other users, which was Hayley's because she was the only person that had some listed for sale, The specs blew me away and came with a Dell one year warranty, I was shocked. The equivalent XPS on the Dell site was selling for more but the specs listed for the XPS Hayley is selling here on Ebay, but the specs reflected what I thought a High Performance Dell XPS 17 should be.

I highly recommend this laptop if your looking for a great overall high performance laptop and the warranty it comes with can be renewed.

This is my 1st laptop and it is amazing for the price! Setup was a breeze and within 30 minutes of boot up, I was already using it. Boot up time is lightning fast only taking 12 seconds! Windows 8 takes some time to get used to, but there is a guide with the laptop that explains the process to you. Battery time is decent lasting 5 to 6 hours of heavy use or up to 3 days in standby time. Wi-Fi works great with this laptop and the internet is lightning fast! You can also switch from a Windows 8 to a Windows 7 mode by clicking this application called Desktop. I haven't had a single problem with this laptop in the 2 weeks I have had so you can tell that is a quality machine. Great laptop for only $179, and is highly recommended that you get the 2 year warranty from Walmart for only $19. The laptop itself comes with a 1 year warranty and with the warranty from Walmart, it will bump it to a 3 year combined warranty.

Also, if you wish to upgrade the RAM, please be aware that there is only one DIMM slot for the RAM, and the RAM can only be upgraded to 8 GBS of ram. Happy laptop hunting and have a nice day!

P.S. This particular laptop has a turbo-boosting technology that will bump the processor to clock at 1.20 GHz and above, when performing certain tasks such as gaming. This is extremely useful when performing many tasks at once.

Update: I have been using this laptop for about 2 months, and still working like a champ! There have been zero problems with this laptop, except the annoying notifications for Windows updates, which just ask you to re-boot your laptop to start the update. Other than that, this laptop has been working great. I highly suggest that the upgrade the ram to 8 GBS, as this will pay off in the long run. Have a nice day.

There is no second slot for memory as advertised. a whole discussion about it is located here at the following link http://www.amazon.com/forum/laptop/ref=cm_cd_fp_ef_tft_tp?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=Fx2G99T61XZXSS7&cdThread=Tx36ZK8NFC9EMIS

Those are some of the things I noticed and asked my Brother-In-Law to check his out and the exact same things, he even went as far as to say that it is a different mother board as well.

I upgraded my wife's laptop and in fact it only has one memory slot. Typically stores will not carry the single 8GB ram chip so I looked and found it at Best Buy. I had it shipped to the store which was free and cost about $40. I have had no problems with this memory upgrade and the computer is very fast and my wife loves it. Overall it was well worth the money and for the people that say that the specifications are lies on the memory slot i agree but on the processor speed they need to understand that it works like intel chips. They also have a boost feature that will automatically overclock the processor depending on your needs. It will not boost it to the 1.3ghz if you are checking your email. Hope this helps.

After 4 months of moderate use of my brand new Dell Inspiron computer the keyboard stopped functioning. After multiple phone calls to a call center (where english was a second language and they could only respond to what was written in their script)I was told I would have to replace the keyboard myself. That failed, so after many more calls they agreed to send someone to replace the keyboard. They did.

After 7 months of less than moderate use, the keyboard and mouse pad failed. Many calls later, the repairman replaced both parts.

After 9 months of infrequent use, the hard drive crashed. After spending $89 at staples to copy my hard drive, and at least 4 hours of telephone frustration, including hangups, and restating the problem multiple times, I was "promised" that "Dell would make things right". I told them I wanted an extended warranty or a new computer," they told me "once the hard drive was replaced I would be "taken care of".

I made multiple phone calls to the "direct line" of the customer service person over the next three months. I resorted to writing to the owner of Dell, Michael Dell, received my letter and a few weeks later I got a call from someone that had no idea what the issue was. After explaining to him he said someone would get back to me.

Months later I did get a call, this person thought I was calling to have the hard drive replaced, nd told me I had missed that house call.Dell Optiplex Computer with 19 inch LCD Flat Panel Monitor (Single Core 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 750 GB Hard Drive, Windows XPDell Inspiron 14R i14RN4110-8073DBK 14-Inch Laptop (Diamond Black)Dell Inspiron 15RM i15RM-7412DBK 15-Inch Laptop (Black) The end result... This is my first laptop and it definitely meets my needs and expectations. The primary reason for the purchase was to have a portable computer/DVD player with WIFI for times when I travel and need a diversion on the plane/train and to have email and Internet access on my own account. I'm no guru and don't need anything for technical purposes; but based on my rather limited experience, Dell computers are the only ones I would own. It did not disappoint in that respect. It virtually set itself up right out of the box. Credit Microsoft for that, I guess. The only drawbacks keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that the battery life seems so short, particulary as I do like to Skype with family members... That really eats up the battery life. It's lucky if it lasts an hour. I will look into getting a longer-lasting battery if one is out there.

I'd recommend this Dell for anyone who needs a good basic laptop with WIFI. It did not come with any office type software except for some "trials" of MS Office. That is probably why the price was so reasonable. WIFI setup instructions could have been a bit better, but with a little help from my cable company it finally got done and works great. I can't wait to see how it works out there on a public WIFI connection.

Edge E420S 14" 320GB 4GB

Edge E420S 14' 320GB 4GBHave been using the 420s for a few months now. Build quality like other Lenovos (and IBM before that) is great and worth the extra bucks compare to Dell or HP. The 14" screen IMHO is the sweet spot for laptops as it results in a reasonably light portable with good screen size.

Powerful for all tasks and can open many apps (windows 7 premium) without it choking.

Only complaint is the power cord. It is constantly coming loose (I keep it in while using the laptop in my office).

I've just got my e420s and its the best looking, sleek and functional machine Ive ever got and this is my 6th lap top from a different brand, so I know what Im saying. In conclusion I highly recommend this 14" E420s, 3njoy.....

HP 14" EliteBook, Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, Windows 7 Pro Notebook

HP 14' EliteBook, Intel Core i5-2450M 2.5GHz, 4GB DDR3, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, Windows 7 Pro NotebookI purchased this from TigerDirect.com and the product description page stated that it weighs 4.56 lb. It weighs at least 5.5 lb and probably closer to 6 lb. For that weight you can get a 15" ultrabook that will cost less, comes with a new 3rd generation Core i5, a HDMI port, and has a nicer screen. Contacted TigerDirect to return it but you have to get an return authorization from HP first. FYI, I tried to post this review on the TigerDirect.com website but the review never showed up...

No problems is the most impotant thing when you buy something mailorder and this computer had none. Like most of you, I don't set up a new computer very often. Windows 7 on the HP did not have everything installed like my previous Acer had. I didn't know where to find how to do particular things. There was no written docs or instructions in the box. For example. To intall games if you type into the search box: Turn Windows Features On or Off and follow the instructions you'll bring them to life. If you're a geek, you probably know that's how to do it. If you don't play with computers you have a problem of what to do to install games. I ran across that info on a forum by accident. The computer is fine for what I want it for and it's not games. For me Microsoft is where the fog is by it's assuming I know how their new whiz bang works over a previous version of Windows.

I purchased this computer for my law firm. Thus, the usage is for basic office work and nothing more. Three (3) months after purchasing the computer the screen decided to go black. The computer would work with external monitors or with the docking port. After receiving the computer back, however, the computer then refused to recognize any batteries.

I have never had a problem with my Dell laptops and it was a grave mistake purchasing an HP laptop.

I am now returning my second EliteBook 8460, both purchased new from Tiger Direct and both having developed driver problems within the first week of usage. The first computer seemed to be missing the MSVCR80.dll driver from the outset. The problem came to light as an error message when I installed a relatively new Epson printer that works smoothly with other HP computers that also have Windows 7. I spent 2 hours on my own trying to download and install the driver from an on-line driver library and then 2 hours working with HP Customer Support, who finally gave up and provided the authorization needed to return the computer to Tiger Direct. I assumed the first computer simply had a manufacturing defect and didn't think twice about ordering again. Tiger Direct was cooperative with the return; and promptly shipped another EliteBook. The second computer seemed to be operating without problems both before and after I installed my Epson printer; however, the same missing MSVCR80.dll driver message showed up on the heels of several Windows updates HP Support Assistant listed as "important". Again I spent a couple of hours unsuccessfully trying to download the missing driver from an on-line library. As a last resort I decided to take the computer to a local PC repair shop and let the guys there take a look. But, before I had the chance to take it in several more Windows updates installed after which my computer screen went almost blank. There was no start menu, no desk top, and no ability to get on line. I called HP support once more and worked with a representative for an hour and a half, who then finally gave up and issued an authorization to return the second computer. The next day I used my slow but reliable netbook in a web search that produced instructions sufficient to partially troubleshoot the problem myself. I was able to access enough of the computer's functionality to restore the system to a point right before the last group of Windows updates were installed. Although the computer appears normal, I still have error messages that HP Assistant and several other maintenance functions aren't working properly. My fingerprint reader no longer works; and I am no longer able to print from the computer because the .dll driver never did successfully download. Needless to say, I am frustrated and disappointed. I specifically wanted a computer with Windows 7 instead of 8. I would have been quite happy with the size and processing speed of this computer and not bothered that it's a bit on the heavy side. I also like it's steel construction, it's spill-resistant keyboard, and the responsiveness of the touch pad and the keys themselves. The only feature I would have added, besides the missing driver of course, is a back-lit keyboard. If I knew a third attempt would result in a new EliteBook with the driver problem resolved, I wouldn't hesitate to try again. Under the circumstances, I can only give it two stars.

i have purchased several (20+) HP 8460p and 8470p elitebooks from both CDW and Amazon. All work very well out of the box.

i have in the recent months started to replace the included hard drive with an SSD from Samsung. this upgrade was cheap, $150 or so and caused an extreme bump in performance.

if you like the hp security software that comes with the laptop, merely restore the system with the included recovery disks. i on the other hand rebuild from an already built image that includes the most recent drivers and default software that my office runs.

the solid casing and robust batteries are a definite plus with this laptop. it has an "elite" feel and quality about it. you can get the same feel from apple and samsung but their laptops will cost you upwards of $1200.

my one complaint with this laptop is the cheapness of the integrated camera led. the pop out button is cheap and often sticks in the open position the more they are used. i have gotten around this issue by closing it with small pieces of duct tape or electrical tape. my newer 8470p elitebooks dont seem to have this issue.

i am writing this review to counter the terrible reviews made here by absolute novices. if you have to sit on tech support with hp for two hours to fix a driver issue with an epson printer, or windows, you shouldnt be blaming the laptop....you should be blaming the driver compatibility or the windows install. none of these reported issues actually had to do with the hardware except for maybe one where the fellows screen died and that will happen to any laptop no matter the price.

Fujitsu LifeBook A6025 - Core Duo T2450 / 2 GHz - Centrino Duo - RAM 1 GB - HDD 120 GB - DVD?RW (?R

Fujitsu LifeBook A6025 - Core Duo T2450 / 2 GHz - Centrino Duo - RAM 1 GB - HDD 120 GB - DVD?RW / DVD-RAM - GMA 950 - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 - fingerprint reader - Vista Home Premium - 15.4' Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800I've had my A6025 for 3 years, adding 3 extra gigs of RAM, which makes it super fast. Nothing else. No crashes, no freezes. Very secure and practical due to the biometric fingerprint reader. Dropped it a few times, no major damage other than minor scrapes. The HDD protector kicks in disabling the reader to protect the Hard drive. Bought an HP D7V, a Sony VAIO, a Toshiba, and none could even come close to the build, features and sturdiness of this laptop.

I bought my fujitsu A6025 in 2007 so I'm not sure if this is the same model. Nevertheless, it had so many problems from the start. First, my battery died shortly after one year, and I almost always had my laptop plugged in. The only time I would unplug was to transport it from one place to another. Once the battery died, my laptop would last 7 minutes before it would automatically shut off. Secondly, it seemed to have a lot of gliches in it's system. Often times the screen would blink while I was surfing the web or using Microsoft Office. Lastly, after about 3 years, I started getting kicked off the internet frequently. It was very frustrating. The other laptops in my home were fine so I know it was this one. I finally contacted tech support and they had me download a software to prevent that. I still got kicked off for about a month after that, but eventually it stopped. Not sure why that was... But after enduring this laptop for 5 years, I'm finally getting a new one, and it's not going to be fujitsu.

Sleek, fast (upgraded to 4GB ram), water-resistant, drop-resent, stable. This has been the best laptop I've ever owned. Only problems were related to Windows Vista (grrr to Microsoft!). Overall, I've had this model for 4 years, so it's getting a little outdated, but it still does everything I need it to. I simply trust it, love it, and highly recommend it.

DELL INSPIRON 6000 LAPTOP 80GB HARD DRIVE 1.0GB OF RAM DVD/CDRW WIRELESS XP

DELL INSPIRON 6000 LAPTOP 80GB HARD DRIVE 1.0GB OF RAM DVD/CDRW WIRELESS XPI bought one of these back in December of 2005, and it is still going strong! It's a super-durable laptop, and still has some great features considering its age, including (at least for the model I purchased) a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. I've since upgraded it (2 GB memory, 320 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Ultimate) and handed it off to a friend, who thinks it's great. It's still a very good laptop; had I not had a friend interested in it, I would probably still be using it to this day. After having two Dell laptops over the last seven years, I am convinced that a Dell (and possibly laptops from other brands) will last a long time as long as it is properly cared for. Keep the inside of your computer clean and replace parts that go bad when necessary, handle it with care (don't drop it! Or at least, try not to), use it on cool and well-ventilated surfaces, run a defragmenter along with disk/registry cleanup utilities (i.e., Ccleaner) on a regular basis, have a good antivirus program (for example, Avast! Antivirus) and run a full system scan every now and then, run the OS and programs from a separate partition (store OS and program files on C:, keep personal files such as documents, photos, etc., on D:), tweak the operating system for maximum performance, keep software up-to-date, avoid using sleep/hibernate, keep files orderly, don't run too many programs at once, and your computer will last a long time and be blazing fast, even at seven years old. My old Dell could probably outperform some of the new Dell computers that come loaded with bloatware; I'm convinced that bloaty software is how computer manufacturers are able to perpetuate their computer sales. Within two years, the combination of new software releases, pre-loaded bloatware, and neglect in general either fries a laptop or slows it down to the point that people think their computer has become obsolete, so they go buy a new one. We're all being had by computer companies that want us to think we need a new computer every two years, when in fact if we were to maintain them, even a ten year old computer would probably meet the computing requirements of most. All right, enough ranting.

Love this laptop! got it right when they said i would, opened it up and turned it on, connects to wifi immediately... perfect laptop for college students or high school students for papers and such... not alot of memory, but i have an external hard drive for that.... highly recommended!

I purchased my Dell for $286 in Jan 2012. I was having problems in July so I took it to the Geek Squad. The testing showed the computer needs a new hard drive. Since the computer is more then 5 years old I had to look around for a PATA drive. I ended up getting a new hard drive and the recovery disks from Dell. I didn't even think about requesting the recovery disks when I purchased the computer. Also to register the computer in my name I have to provide Dell with purchase information. So far this has cost me $169. not including the cost to the Geek Squad.

My daughter and I bought my grandson a computer in July through Amazon. It immediately started having problems. The Geeks advised us to return it to the seller if we can.

I guess my luck isn't very good with computers.

HP ENVY 14-1210NR 14.5-Inch Notebook PC (Silver)

HP ENVY 14-1210NR 14.5-Inch Notebook PCYou might be wondering what the difference between this and the HP Envy 14-1110nr 14.5-Inch Relic Laptop PC Up to 3.45 Hours of Battery Life (Carbon) While this HP Envy 14 has a larger HDD and a slightly faster processor, the HDD is a lot slower (at 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm). This difference in HDD speed is worth going with the other laptop with a slightly smaller (640GB) but faster HDD and slightly slower processor. Plus Amazon has it on sale for $924.99 right now. However if that 110GB of HDD space is really that important to you, you could go with this laptop; just trying to inform people!

I bought this recently to replace a Dell Studio 1537 that had its share of problems. After using this laptop for a few months (I bought mine this past April) I can say that it is definitely one of the best laptops I've used.

Pros:

1. Very solid feel to it. Being an aluminum body laptop definitely makes it feel better than the cheap plasticky feel that some laptops have. Some reviewers have stated that the laptop is heavy; I haven't really noticed it.

2. The webcam's pretty good... I've had Skype chats lasting for about 2 hours without the webcam shutting off. My previous dell's webcam was notorious for shutting off at random and not coming back on without a restart. The quality seems pretty good for an integrated webcam.

3. It's pretty easy to upgrade/replace parts, which is definitely nice given that previous laptops I've had make you jump through hurdles to get to them. All you have to do is remove 5 screws to take off the entire back plate. Very easy to do a thorough clean using compressed air.

Speaking on this topic, I upgraded the RAM on this computer to 8GB. I ended up using this:

Corsair 8 GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Kit CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9

amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-Laptop-Memory-CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9/dp/B002YUF8ZG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309126699&sr=8-1

Perfectly compatible with this laptop, if anyone was interested.

4. There's a little circle in the top left corner of the trackpad that you can double tap to turn it off. Definitely a nice feature when you're typing alot and accidentally move the mouse by rubbing the base of your hand on the trackpad.

5. There are two exhaust fans in the laptop, one in the back and one on the right side. This helps in keeping the laptop cool... I've ran MATLAB with multithreaded code that takes several hours to run on this laptop and it never gets too hot.

Minor Annoyances:

1. The trackpad takes some getting used to, and sometimes feels unresponsive/stuck. You'll definitely need to invest in an external mouse for dedicated use of the laptop.

2. Although HP advertised the screen as being one of the brightest screens found, I've had laptops that have had brighter screens. The screen does display colors pretty well though.

Neutral Points:

1. Only 3 USB ports. Technically, it's 2 USB ports + 1 USB/e-SATA combo. I've never needed more than those 3 at any one time, although I could see where it could be an issue.

Overall, a solid laptop. Definitely recommended.

Buy HP ENVY 14-1210NR 14.5-Inch Notebook PC (Silver) Now

Overall I like this laptop alot. If it wasn't for my Cons, I would love this laptop and have rated it a 5 star. It was fast out of the box. It comes pre-installed with Photoshop Elements and Premier Elements which is awesome! It definitely makes me happy to have something better pre-installed than Windows Movie maker and Paint...yeesh! I definitely plan to test this laptop out with some gaming and photo/video editing to see how it performs under intense use, but I'm liking it's performance so far.

Pros:

-Great design

-Large 750gb hard-drive

-Nice LED screen

-Great graphics (switchable is a very nice feature for a laptop)

-Photoshop and Premier Elements comes pre-installed

-Fences is a cool add-on as you can hide your desktop whenever you want, not sure about the rest of the features but we'll see

Neutral:

-RAM...would have liked 6-8 GB but 4 gigs will do for now

-Envy Theme...I prefer the Windows Aero theme over the "Envy" theme. To me the Envy theme felt dated and dirty in appearance. If you install this theme you have to go into the MyColors app to reset the theme back to the standard Windows theme.

-No Blu-ray player. While obviously not a deal breaker for me, it would have been nice to have one included on this laptop.

Cons:

-Wireless Connection: I don't know what's going on, but my wireless shows Excellent connection (full bars) but lags at times loading pages and downloading. I'm going to look into it further, but it can get a little annoying. When running on a third-party browser (Chrome) internet seems to be better, so I'm thinking it's HP bloatware on the IE8 install, but will also look into driver updates for the wireless card.

-Touchpad: It's bigger and less responsive than I expected. My hand will also accidentally touch a part of it without realizing (this causes the cursor to jump away from what I was trying to do). Also, the left/right mouse buttons also move the cursor which causes the cursor to jump to a different part of the screen sometimes causing miss-clicks.

This was purchased to replace a HP DV-5. This notebook had several appeals that enticed me want to try it; the backlit keyboard and the included Photo Shop software. Upon getting and using the computer for a couple months there are something's that are amazing and a few bothersome things that could be improved.

Pros:

This notebook is genuinely built of hard quality material and you can feel that it will hold up for a long time. The beats audio is not bad and works great although sometimes the placement of the speakers at the bottom can be a bit awkward, unlike most notebooks that have the speakers at the top of the keyboard, just below the monitor. The included copies of Photoshop are greatly appreciated out of the box for quick editing. On the specs end, getting 4 GB of ram and a 750 GB hard drive up front is great and the processer speed works out great for demanding applications. Least I forget to mention the backlit keyboard that outside of the Mac realm is not standard on many notebooks PC's.

Cons:

There are several things that disappoint me about this notebook. First it has a beautiful screen but it is covered by a plastic cover leaving an "air gap" between the LED display and you. Why this is so bad is it produces more glare than you would normally get with a notebook screen and on top of that placing that plastic on top of the screen makes the picture seem less clear and kind of washed looking. My second major concern is the jumpiness and overall design of the touchpad. Overtime I believe a software update can fix this but for now it's bothersome. I use a regular mouse anyway so it's not that big of an inconvenience. I'm not so concerned with the lack of a VGA port or only having 2 USB + 1 Sata but one could always have more.

Overall I would recommend this computer and would love to give it 5 stars but for the way the display is designed and the jumpiness and inconsistent response of the touchpad I'm giving it 4 stars.

After many reviews and thorough searching for a good deal, I finally purchased my Envy over a month ago.

I am very pleased with my purchase and loved the overall performance of the components. Only flaw would be the touch pad which doesn't recognize certain actions, but getting a wireless mouse would fix that problem.

The design of the Envy is sleek, and the performance is top notch. I was very impressed with the sound card which is Beats Audio. The laptop speakers are weak but plug in some good headphones and enjoy the crisp thumping of your favorite tunes. I compared my sound card to one of my friends recent laptop purchases and even he was impressed by the sound quality! The interchangeable graphics card is also a neat feature and the display is impeccable.

Coming from a Sony Vaio, I can say that I am pleased with my HP Envy! I'd give it a 8.5/10. If it had Blu Ray capabilities then we would have a perfect 10.

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black)

Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 11.6-Inch LaptopI do my serious computing at home on a well-appointed desk top and when traveling need a laptop that can at least handle the kinds of work I perform with my desktop. For the past 2 years I used a Dell XPS M1330 for this purpose and came to literally loathe the machine (heavy and unreliable, with disappointing performance), which ended my respect for Dell and sent me looking elsewhere for something more to my liking. To see if I could get along with a smaller machine I first tried traveling with a $200 netbook, which I found to be simply too weak for my needs; however, I found the light weight and small size to be a major plus, so I went on the prowl for the same kind of form factor in a powerful machine, which led me eventually to the 1380T. At present there aren't many machines in this category, and from what I could tell from specs and user comments, this one is at the top of the list at the present time, which is why I bought one. There has been nothing from my experience to date to indicate otherwise and in fact, my shift to the Acer 1380T (I7 CPU) from the Dell has been like coming up for fresh air, a five star experience.

I've had this unit for about a month now and to date have taken it on one serious road trip, which has demonstrated the machine is all I had hoped for, and actually a good bit more. Other reviewers have thoroughly gone through what this machine has to offer so I will limit myself to what I have found useful.

1. It has handled everything I do with my desktop (something I could not say for the Dell) let me hasten to add I don't do games, which may need a dedicated graphics card for best effect (Asus has a machine in this class that such users might consider, although why one would want to play those kinds of games on a machine this small is beyond me)

2. It runs cool and has a very long battery life (my initial read is that it will easily go 8 or 9 hours when all you are doing is routine text processing kinds of stuff, about 4 times as long as the Dell)

3. It is in that magic weight range of around 3 lbs and its thickness and weight are not amplified by the battery (unlike many other laptops)

4. The screen is excellent (others have carped about viewing angle, but for a single user it is great, and in this size range, isn't that what matters?)

5. I actually like the "chiclet" key board, which has "homing" ridges on the f and j keys that help with touch typing ... I find individual key size to actually be substantial, and touch type at least as easily on this keyboard as the one I have at home ... maybe I have a light touch, but I don't notice any keyboard flex others seem to sense

6. The machine feels substantial, even with all the plastic (which I'm sure holds weight down)

7. The charger does not use a proprietary input, is light, consisting of a single wall wart with a configurable plug (for which you can get alternatives for other country's outlets), configurable meaning you can position the prongs for horizontal or vertical (and it's a 2 prong non-polarized plug) my guess is that the total travel package is a good 2 lbs under the Dell.

Are there annoyances? There is the usual bloatware, but no worse than what I've experienced with other vendors ... it just means spending some time removing or disabling it. There is no optical drive, but that's a weight trade-off, and after honestly examining my usage patterns, I couldn't even remember the last time I required one on a trip. I have a perfectly good $50 Samsung external USB that works just fine for the rare occasions I have to do something with that almost outmoded technology.

My one peeve with Acer is their not supplying system reinstall media, expecting users to create their own. It took 1.25 hours to produce the 4 DVDs their on board utility produces from the partition on the hard disk they have set aside with this content. My advice, start it going while you are watching TV or reading a book and just be prepared for it to take awhile. It would be nice if Acer would set this up so you could create a bootable USB or flash instead.

Surprises? From other reviews I expected to have issues with the touch pad, but have not at all. I've always hated touch pads because I somehow manage to hit them with my thumb at the wrong time with annoying effects, but not this one. Otherwise, it seems to work no better or worse than any other I've used across a spectrum of manufacturers. I also like having less palm space, since I've come to believe that is something that helps to keep my thumbs away from the touch pad.

My other surprise was with the built-in Bluetooth. I have an old Palm TX that has information I wanted to sync onto this machine, only to find USB sync for Win 7 x64 is not being supported by Palm software. A little investigation indicated I might be able to sync via Bluetooth. Sure enough, once enabled, both devices located each other and sync just worked. Incidentally, if you are new to x64 you too will likely find that some of your older apps won't run without an upgrade to a 64-bit version (sometimes this is just a question of needing to locate a 64-bit driver, but some apps do things that are incompatible with 64-bit architecture).

I have not used an external monitor with this machine (yet) and don't have any particular reason to use hdmi or sound I/O, so check what other reviewers have to say if those are important to you. The card reader is the usual for this type of machine and having a hot key for enabling/disabling wi-fi or Bluetooth is definitely more user friendly than the physical switch Dell supplied.

All in all, Acer has managed to wrap a lot of very nice stuff into a very small package. From my first month of usage, I believe it to be by far the best of the dozen or so laptops I've worked with over the years.

January 18 update OK, I've now really put this machine through some heavy lifting. For a week long workshop I was involved in, I used this laptop for extensive editing of PowerPoint slides. Presentation files ranged from a couple of slides to over 500, and sometimes I had maybe as many as 10 of them open cutting and pasting to a master. I also had Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat open at various points, not to mention Outlook, Excel, and web browsers. The machine never crashed. Every now and then I noted a bit of a pause when the system's power misering required spinning the hard drive back up, so a SSD might be worth considering, although this was a minor annoyance. I forgot my charger and went my first day on battery alone without running dry, at least 5 hours of serious use including internet for a chunk of the time. It may be of interest that the generic nature of the charge port allowed me to use a colleague's (for an Aspire one netbook), which while a bit less potent was sufficient to restore full charge in a few hours. The final presentation had notes on each slide and apparently PowerPoint writes to pdf in image form if you ask for notes, which showed one non-gaming reason reason for having a graphics card. It took the machine quite a bit of time to do it. An app we worked on had a bug that was revealed because the CPU evidently runs a good bit faster than Intel's integrated graphics processor. On the other hand, Photoshop runs perfectly fine (at least for the kinds of editing I typically do). As for using projectors and external monitors, the machine brought both up effortlessly and automatically (Casio projector, miscellaneous monitor). For airplane usage and travel, it is the perfect size for today's cramped seating, even room on the tray table for my nano mouse. I managed to get along OK with the touchpad for routine stuff, but when it came to extended or precision work, I pulled out my nano mouse. Communications and networking were flawless, across multiple variations of network configurations. One more thing that may be of interest to some, the built-in mic can be set to pass through via Sound in the control panel, which means if you plug in an external mic and hook up a set of powered speakers, the machine can easily be used as a quick and dirty PA system (my last Dell system did this quite poorly this one is quite good).

There is nothing about the machine to change my review, except to note it is proving to be even better than I originally thought.

I think the other reviewers have done a brilliant job and I fully agree with their assessments. I would only add the following points regarding ports......

I was all set to buy an 11.6" Airbook. That plan came to a screeching halt when I discovered that it didn't have an Ethernet port. The best you could do was to buy a separate USB dongle that would provide 10/100 Ethernet. For an IT professional who is used to walking into a client's server room and taking a 50GB backup copy of a database in no time via gigabit ehternet that was just not going to work out. I don't fancy stepping back to 1990! Also a lot of hotels only have wired Ethernet and I just want to be able to plug in and go. Not spend time playing find-the-adapter.

I also found out that the Airbook has a mini DisplayPort. To plug into an external VGA monitor you need (yep, you guessed it) another adapter. To plug into a TV or projector you need yet another adapter for HDMI. All these are sold separately and are more junk to cart around the world. They are also the exact thing that you would find that you have lost (or left back in the hotel) just when you needed to plug into a projector to give a presentation ;)

So I was all set to lay out serious $$$ on a Sony ultra-portable when I came across the TimelineX. I've had it for a month now and I couldn't be happier with it. For the professional on the road that doesn't want to lug around some 15.6" monster this little guy is the perfect replacement. Compared to the Sony ultra-portables the price is outstanding value.

I just purchased this laptop as a portable solution to my Dell Studio, and i have to say that this is the first laptop that i have ever purchased, and as an IT professional I purchase quite a few, that has exceeded all expectations! I often work with demanding applications such as Adobe Premier CS5, Autodesk 3DS Max 2010, and Maya, and have to say that this machine is able to run them without any issues. Now im not saying this is a replacement for a desktop powerhouse system for heavy graphics editing and such but it is nice to have a small portable rig capable of opening these files and making modifications on the go. Now unsurprisingly this machine only rates a Windows Experience Index of 3.5 due solely to the fact there is no dedicated graphics card, but come on, if your seriously purchasing this with hopes of gaming in mind chances are your not even doing enough research to even be reading this review. But any way more about the product; upon first glance when taking this machine out of its box, and i say machine because i dare not call a system this powerful a "netbook", is "Wow, an i7 in this? Really?". Well lets get one thing straight, iX is a technology, not a specific model series of processors, but it does pack one heck of a surprising punch for a machine this size. As stated above I can easily run some of todays most demanding apps without any problems, and the 4GB of DDR3 RAM is quite handy! And for once, a battery life as advertised! with radios off and screen dimmed but still easily readable i got a 7+ hour life while doing normal operations such as email and word processing. Now obviously battery life drops when you do more demanding tasks, so as a comparison I am currently writing this review from this laptop with WiFi ON, music playing, screen brightness all the way up, and installing a game in the background and my battery life is just above 5 hrs!!! Now how many systems can claim that! Some people have made a couple small comments about a small amount of flex in the keyboard, and it is true, the keyboard does flex maybe a mm or so, but it is not noticeable unless looking at the kb whilst typing, otherwise i find the response and feedback of the keyboard pleasantly comfortable, and the layout is great and you should have no issues typing on it as the dimensions are very close to a full keyboards dimensions with the exception of a few keys such as arrows, but you can get used to that.

Overall I must say that this machine is well worth the money and having now used it, I would have happily paid a hundred or two more for it!

I have had this laptop for less than a year and it is still under warranty. I have already sent it in twice to be fixed. The first time was because of a crashing issue and the second time was because a group of pixels in the LCD screen died. Each time I had to pay for shipping and was without a computer for more than a week.

My real issue is that after getting the laptop back from the pixels issue, less than two days later more pixels died. I called ACER customer support and they told me that I would have to pay for the screen to be replaced this time even though the laptop was still under warranty. I find it unacceptable to be required to pay to replace something that they were just supposed to have fixed two days ago! I also think that having to send a laptop in for servicing 3 times in less than a year is unreasonable.

Want Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Discount?

I'm a photojournalist who looked long and hard to find a new laptop. I need a computer I can leave in the car trunk or carry in a fanny pack while shooting assignments, so it has to be tough, compact and powerful. The Acer Aspire TimelineX AS1830T-68U118 solved the problem of cramming near-desktop power into a Netbook-sized package. I've only had it for a few weeks, but here are my impressions:

EXTERIOR:

1. Not as pretty as a Macbook Air, but what is? It also costs less.

2. The tough exterior has a nice texture that is easy to grip and shrugs off fingerprints. The Acer power brick weighs just seven ounces; half the size and weight of my old laptop brick.

3. The 11.6" glossy screen looks great so long as you view it "on axis." The Acer runs at 1366 by 768, 32 bit, 60 Hertz. The 128 MB dedicated video memory is a bottleneck if you are a gamer or want to do video editing. I watched a movie using an external DVD player with no problem, though. The frame contains a fixed user-facing web cam and mike.

4. Unlike the MacBook Air, the compact TimeLineX AS1830T is loaded with three USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI port, and an old-style VGA monitor socket! The built-in multi-card reader will take SD cards, but not CF cards.

5. There is no built-in optical drive. No PCMCIA slot.

6. People complain about the touch pad; they're right. I forgot my mouse one day and it was marginally less painful than smashing my forehead against the keyboard until I pass out. NOTE: I uninstalled the Alps touchpad software and it actually works better.

UNDER THE HOOD:

1. Computers this size rarely contain the powerful i7-680UM processor. It easily runs high-end programs under Win 7 64-bit Home Premium with Service Pack 1. Bloatware wasn't too bad.

2. It comes with 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. I bumped this up to 8 gigabytes, but honestly, I couldn't see much difference. It's just that RAM is so cheap!

3. It has WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity. I haven't used the Bluetooth, so can't say much about it. On field assignments with no WiFi access I've transmitted photos to clients though my Android cellphone using two methods: as a WiFi hotspot and using PdaNet with a USB tether. Easy--no issues.

4. This Acer contains a roomy 500 GB hard drive. Curiously, they chose a slower 5400 RPM HD, though it seems plenty fast. I assume they opted for it to maximize battery life.

5. Which highlights the TimelineX AS1830T remarkable battery life. I spent the first day continuously loading software, updates, rebooting, testing and interfacing my programs. Even with the WiFi on and the screen at maximum brightness, the Acer still had a few gasps of power after five solid hours of heavy lifting. Sweet!

IN USE:

1. The boot time to the first Windows musical tone is 55 seconds. Much slower than a MacBook Air's SSD boot time. (Read the "SSD UPDATE" at the end of this review, though.)

2. The Aspire TimelineX AS1830T easily runs the full-on Photoshop CS6 64-bit, PhotoMechanic, Firefox and other programs simultaneously. Massive Canon 5DII RAW files load in CS6 in about six seconds. Not as good as my desktop, but excellent for field work.

BOTTOM LINE:

The TimelineX is powerful, small and affordable with remarkable battery life. As an added bonus, Acer designed this machine for easy user upgrades:

----------SSD UPDATE----------

Some users turn their TimelineX into an Ultrabook by swapping out the hard drive for a rugged, ultra-fast solid state hard drive (SSD). Both the RAM and the hard drive are easily accessible under a single clearly-marked panel attached with five standard Phillips screws.

I installed both a Crucial 256 GB m4 SSD and 8 GB of RAM in this Acer Aspire TimelineX. Holy smokes, what an easy and worthwhile upgrade! Boot time is now just 30 seconds, but the big news was Photoshop CS6. It performs heavy duty image processing in 1/2 to 1/3 the time! Battery life is extended, it runs cooler and quieter, and the laptop is more shock resistant. It now compares to my very powerful desktop computer and is STILL cheaper than a MacBook Air. If you can afford this upgrade, do it! I turned the original 500 GB hard drive into an external hard drive with a Vantec NexStar TX 2.5-Inch SATA to USB 2.0 External Hard Drive Enclosure for about ten bucks.

I posted a video on cloning and installing the SSD and RAM into this laptop. This was my first cloning/replacement/upgrade and it was a piece of cake.

By the way, there is a higher quality You Tube post available that Amazon won't let me link. Search "How to install a SSD into a TimelineX laptop" on You Tube. Beware--the audio kinda sux. I bought a good mike after I shot this.

--------------------------------

UPDATE: I've been using this souped-up laptop for over a year now and have been very pleased with my purchase. Small and powerful, it really kicks bootie! Absolutely no issues. There are some neat new ultrabooks out there now, so do your homework. But even the best will have a hard time beating this machine.

ASUS K55A-DS51 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mocha)

ASUS K55A-DS51 15.6-Inch LaptopMy girlfriend's Acer laptop finally died. The hard drive for my girlfriend's Acer broke after six months. I went to the UPS store to ship it back (since Acer refuses to accept returns sent through the cheaper, USPS priority mail) and paid $50. The guy there said that they shipped out Dells and Acers several times a week. Red flag. Got the computer back after a month, the memory went bad and I had to replace that... the hard drive they replaced was junk and had to be reformatted 3 times... finally, the motherboard crapped out and now it is a giant paperweight. I bought the Acer for her two years ago for $800 and after a year and a half of very light use (mostly internet browsing, word processing), it died for good. I always knew Dell was junk and HP was hit-or-miss, and now I know never to get an Acer.

Onto ASUS. I started doing a bit of research and you will find, no joke, that ASUS and Apple consistently top the list for the most reliable computers. A paltry number of ASUS laptops actually get sent back for repairs. I got this laptop for my girlfriend as a replacement for the junk Acer and we couldn't be more pleased. The laptop stays cool, loads quickly, the keyboard has the right degree of sensitivity, the battery life is decent (about 4 hours). It returns from hibernation almost instantly, like a tablet. She likes playing The Sims 3 and the old Acer would freeze up and overheat every time she played it (keep in mind the Acer supposedly exceeded all the minimum requirements), the ASUS handles it very well. The graphics are decent and everything is very responsive. For light gaming, or older games, this laptop should have no problem. I don't recommend playing COD on here, but if you've got some games that are a couple years old, it shouldn't be an issue. HDMI output works as expected, I frequently plug it into my TV and watch shows and movies without any challenges. Finally, the unit stays VERY COOL, which has always been a problem with past laptops. A welcome change.

Yes, Windows 8 is every bit as annoying as everyone says it is. There are tutorials on the computer as well as a user guide on using Windows 8. I can already tell that Win 8 is going to be another Vista fiasco where they will replace it with a Windows 9 that is actually intuitive. HOWEVER, if you spend a few days with this, you eventually figure it out. Girlfriend is not very tech-savvy, but she is managing fine now. Windows 7 was much better, but that's not the laptop's fault. So far, the laptop has lived up to its claims. It is fast, lightweight, thin (for a 15.6-inch!), the colors are crisp and sharp, and the comprehensive warranty is the best in the industry. Even if you ACCIDENTALLY spill something on your laptop, they will take it in and repair it for you. At least, hypothetically. Not planning on testing that out. Case in point, this was a great budget laptop and I'm thinking of getting one for myself at this rate. The girlfriend loves it and has been gushing about it every day since receiving it. Great for students and light users. You will not find a better deal in this price range. Couldn't recommend it more. If this laptop lasts more than a year, ASUS will have a customer for life.

P.S. I recommend shopping around. Amazon is selling this for $550, but you can find it cheaper elsewhere online (I bought mine from Adorama Camera for $475!).

EDIT: 4/19/2013 Had some difficulties registering the accidental damage warranty through ASUS' website, but I emailed ASUS and they responded within two business days and handled the registration perfectly. Very prompt and professional. Also, another shopper commented about Adorama's bad reputation. I was unaware at the time I ordered my laptop and it's something to consider, but I have to say my laptop arrived brand new, sealed, with free 3-day shipping and no issues. Certainly think twice from ordering from them if you want, but the original intent of my message stays the same price compare. Amazon has great prices, but it doesn't hurt to look around.

My son who is very computer savvy turned me on to the ASUS brand. He purchased one about 6 months ago, essentially the same, but he paid considerably more for his. The i5 Intel processor combined with the memory makes this laptop lighting fast. I was actually quite impressed with the overall quality, fit and finish being exceptional. Can you call a laptop beautiful? Well compared to my HP G71, the statement fits. It's a good looking machine.

One of the first things I did before configuring my preferences on the operating system was to play a DVD to analyze the resolution. Is this bluray HD? The resolution was absolutely beautifully clear, bright and detailed. Now I am not a computer "geek", just an average "Joe" so I cannot lay out for you the technical specs as some will do, but I am extremely impressed by this brand.

Battery life is also again quite surprising compared to the G71. I didn't realize you could have a laptop exceed 3 to 4 hours of operating between recharges. Fantastic battery life.

Mine came with an ASUS 1 year warranty to protect me from myself. It covers the coffee spill that shorts out your computer. Something about liquid and electronics don't mix. It protects me against accidentally dropping it on concrete as I try to put it into my bag. Never heard of a warranty like that before, but I was happily surprised to find it in the paperwork. You need only register it with ASUS to begin the warranty.

As for the speakers, with my G71, I purchased an HP separate speaker because even at 100%, what came out was a whisper. The ASUS was a major improvement.

To sum it up, you will find a lightweight nicely textured cover (low maintenance) that is very attractive in Mocha, brushed aluminum keyboard face and a very high-resolution screen that will impress you. A keyboard that offers soft, but a positive feel. ASUS has exceeded my expectations and am thankful my son turned me on to the brand.

For the price and please take the time to look at the specs, in my humble opinion, the best deal you will find today while you compare apples to apples (no pun intended).

You will not be disappointed.

Follow up ~ Several days of play and it is still fantastic. On an unrelated subject, I found a company called Clam that has a software download that gives you the old fashioned "Start Botton". Give you the choice of XP, Vista or Windows 7. So if you feel a bit terrified about the new OS, you can have your comfy chair back.

I'm actually getting used to "8" and I'm liking it. For a little over $525, you will not find anything(same quality brand)even close to it for the money.

P.S. ~ And as for other merchants having it for less, read intently their "Return policy". When I had a small problem, Amazon was instantly there and I didn't have to jump through a single hoop. How much is peace of mind worth? The reason Amazon is my first place to buy, there Customer Service.

I'm writing this review because I saw this laptop has so few. I bought this for myself as my 5-year-old HP laptop that had fan & battery problems from the get-go was finally starting to give out.

This laptop has a large, clear screen with great speakers so it's fine for watching a movie or show while cooking in the kitchen and the HDMI links up very easily with my TV when I plug it in in my room. There are a lot of complaints about Windows 8 out there but you can switch to the Windows 7 view easily if you find it too hard to figure out. My advice is that the world changes whether you like it or not so you might as well get accustomed to doing things in new ways all the time. I found Windows 8 to be much better when it comes to the startup/shutdown speed, hooking up to digital outlets and uninstalling programs like bloatware. The only thing I think is entirely counter-intuitive is how they show you your files. Having a "my computer" button on the Start page would fix this.

This computer is cool to the touch, I can barely hear the fan and the charge is lasting pretty long. It lasts over 3 hours on a full battery. Setting it up for the first time just took 5 minutes and you DO NOT need to have a Microsoft account (hotmail, msn.com) to finish it so don't bother if you don't have one.

If you are looking for a larger laptop with great sound and speed, buy this laptop.

After weeks of research landed on purchasing Asus K55a. Current / previous laptops are 4+ yr old 17" mac book pro and 4 year old Lenovo think pad running Vista. Asus is almost a bridge between Mac and Windows laptops. Consumer reports as of 5/2013 listed Asus 4th in overall tech help and products, Apple being 1st and Lenovo 3rd. Apple run great products at astronomical prices, and Lenovo are cheap IBM's now made entirely of left over parts in China. So hopefully Asus will be a bridge between these two.

The quality and designs of Asus are very similar to Apple with brushed aluminum and key pad feel. Key pad feel is very important for me as I do a lot of typing, and hated typing on my old Lenovo with punch card like feel. Also Asus seems to offer the lowest cost for 3rd gen Intel processors, and hard drive above 4gb, ideal being 8 gb. With this model memory can be expanded to 12 gb for bout $25-$50 for the DIY'er. As for gaming am not a gamer and I can't comment on the visual cards or speakers. However hooked up to HDTV via hdmi cables the picture transfer is as good if not better than my macbook.

And as for Windows 8 it is designed more for the new touch screen pc / ultra books coming out. In a few years everything will be convertible pc's with removable tablet screens. So yes Windows 8 is very annoying if one does not have a touch screen but in the tutorial you can switch back to Windows 7 in the main menu. Products and people claiming you need to buy a product to switch to Wind 7 are a scam! As for price Amazon is great seller usually on top of other main street sellers prices, just keep an eye out for sales. This unit can be had for under five hundred.

exactly what i wanted with performance, no need buying a mac or hp for the brand name, this computer has a better CPU chip and motherboard and you can definitely tell. the only difference is that the price is cheaper cause you arent paying for the brand name
