HP G6-1c79nr Notebook Computer - Black

HP G6-1c79nr Notebook Computer - BlackThe HP Pavilion g6-1c79nr seems to be a great laptop. I've had it for about a week now; it works very well and is sturdy/decent quality (re previous comments stating otherwise). And as far as I can see, it has the best specs for the price ($429 when I bought it). We'll see how it holds up as time goes on...

All in all, I really like this laptop!

Update (as of 3/2012)...

The laptop is STILL running perfectly. MORE than satisfied with it! Definitely didn't waste our money;-)

good value, hard to find one like this for the dollars spent.

was delivered 2 days earlier than quoted and I had it up and connected wirelessly in about 20 minutes.

I've had it for 2 weeks now and it's performed up to my very high standards. Only thing i wish is that it had an AMD video card as opposed to Intel HD. I needed to get this ASAP after my previous laptop (Compaq Presario CQ52, also owned by HP) died. So i was skeptical about getting another laptop owned under the same company. I almost decided upon a 3GB ram Intel Pentium Toshiba model.

PROS:

-Intel Core i3 Processor is insanely fast paired with the amount of RAM that comes with it for indexing large files on the 640GB hard drive.

-4GB RAM really increases the boot time in my opinion. With both the i3 processor and the amount of RAM the boot time is about 30 seconds max, depending on how many files you have on your hard drive though.

-Some of the start-up programs are very useful especially if you're just getting the hand of Windows 7 or are very new to the operating system. The system comes with per-loaded with a number of HP designed programs, that could be uninstalled if you don't really see the need for them. Skype and a suite of Windows Live programs saves you the time of actually installing it yourself, and i was up on Wi-Fi in no time at all. So if you're big on Skype and social messaging, you'll be up in about 3 minutes after the first boot and setup, talking with your friends.

-The slimness factor of the laptop is great, as opposed to other bulkier laptops.

-The battery life has decent time, but it really depends upon how higher your brightness settings are on your computer. You would normally think it matters how much programs you actually have open, but that hasn't been a factor in the battery percentage for me, it's really the brightness settings.

-Microsoft Office 2010 Starter comes pre-installed as well, it's very useful if you don't have the funds to purchase the full version (Home, Student or Professional) right off the bat. But i was privileged enough to have a copy of Microsoft Office 2010 Profession Plus already, so i uninstalled the one that came on the system and installed that. But it really depends on how much and how often you depend on Microsoft Office.

-Windows 7 looks absolutely beautiful on this machine, combined with the HD BrightView LED-backlit Display and the Intel HD video card that comes with over 1.5GB of memory. The transparent aero themes really compliment that laptop as an overall product when powered on.

CONS:

-The trackpad has a rough texture as opposed to the texture on the rest of the laptop which is moderately smooth. I wouldn't preferred it the other way around actually, but buying a USB wireless or wired mouse that goes for about $7 right here on amazon along with your order will do you good.

-The brightness on the laptop increases by 150% whenever i watch a movie in full screen. I tried changing this in the Intel Graphic Properties control panel, but it doesn't change. It takes about 5 seconds when i exited out of full screen mode for the brightness settings to automatically re-adjust to what it once was.

-As mentioned in the PROS, the amount of programs currently opened takes a toll on the fan as normally opposed to the battery life, let's say on other laptops. Sometimes it just roars up out of nowhere if i have 4 or more programs open.

-The antivirus program that comes pre-installed (Norton 60-day) can become really annoying when it alerts of you of every little change you make on the system. I recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials, and removing Norton, if you don't like to be bothered every 2 minutes when you make a setting change in control panel. Of course i could be exaggerating a tad bit, because i am biased towards Microsoft Security Essentials.

-The Intel HD video card comes with alot memory but playing a game such as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which came out in 2005, has fuzzy white dots scattered on the screen when you're playing. Now it's not overbearing, but it's quite that noticeable during gameplay if you pay close attention to detail. If you consider yourself picky about video quality during gameplay, then it would be a problem for you. I haven't really ventured into higher quality games as yet to actually report on how they appear in this laptop.be a problem.

-The laptop's weight isn't bad, but be careful how wave it around and carry it in your hands.

I would recommend purchasing a not to pricy cooling pad, or even the Logitech Cooling Pad N200 with USB-Powered 2-Speed Fan (939-000346), (i bought one) to ensure your laptop will be on a safe base doesn't get a crack even in the slightest, because that seems very likely to happen, it has sort of a cheap feel to it when you hold the sides, but with your palms rested on it, the feelings is very comfortable and sturdy. Kudos to HP on keeping the balance on the design between great quality and cheap. It sometimes keeps you from saying "Did i pay too much for this?"

If you consider yourself a power user and a huge multi-tasker, then this laptop is for you, and the processor and RAM, parallel to each other gives you that and more. A decent RAM upgrade of

8GB would cost you $49 depending on where you look. I ran Vue 9 xStream on this and it runs smoothly, but i haven't tried Autodesk 3ds Max as yet. At the time i paid for this the price was $418.00 and it's a great deal when you consider the specs that come in it.

Recommendations (by user types):

Basic User you will definitely love this laptop and won't have a complaint about speed. These kinds of users usually browse the web and view documents or listen to music and play DVDs.

Intermediate User (could be considered power user) multi-tasking between web-browsing, watching videos, editing documents all at the same time, you won't have a problem with the speed allotted to you.

Advanced User Experienced gaming, Video editing, 3D modeling, web-browsing, watching videos, downloading files all simultaneously this laptop would still meet up to your standards (it did to mine), though i wouldn't recommend doing all that on a regular basis. I would personally advise you to upgrade your RAM on this machine if you do those sorts of activities frequently, like me. To be cautions against it your machine eventualy wearing down because of you using those kinds of programs more and more.

P.S. This computer only allows 2 slots of RAM, and the most i found so far is and 8GB stick with 4 for each (4x2). I am unsure if the processor could be upgrade with let's say an Intel Core i5 or i7 but it's worth looking into instead of purchasing a $900 laptop with those two things pre-installed in it.

I see a number of other people's reviews such as "HP is getting out of the computer business for a reason" and "the laptop's screen is very spotty, meaning I get random blue and black spots on the screen " and i haven't had the pleasure of experiencing that as yet, but i do not have any complaints so far. Like i always say, everyone will have a different experience with their product, it won't all be the same, but it depends on if you want to take that chance of actually purchasing it and trying for yourself. I absolutely love it, but i am definitely purchasing an 8GB RAM stick to go with this machine, just to be sure to not repeat the past of machines slowing down due to the lack of speed required to index the amount of files i would have on the hard drive.

I will update in about 7-8 months on my status.

I have no words to describe how wonderful this team, I really like because its 15.6-inch wide screen allows you to have a good view of what is planned there without forcing much in sight, its powerful processor in conjunction with memory ram make this team a processing beast and this just a core i3 not want to imagine what would a core i7. I have not had any difficulty when installing any program, has had a good compatibility with programs that you installed. new battery still goes a long (4 hours and half). Buy and have brought to Venezuela through a door to door and I saved a lot if I had to buy it here.
