Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch Ultrabook (Graphite Gray)

Lenovo IdeaPad U510 15.6-Inch UltrabookI am really enjoying my new Lenovo IdeaPad U510 Ultrabook. I was using another brand of laptop for the past 3 years or so and it was showing its age. I run a small consulting and grant writing business using my computer so things like reliability, storage and computer speed mean a lot to me. First off, I'm very impressed with the overall size and weight. My previous laptop, while powerful when new, was also much larger and much much heavier. With 1TB of storage, I am pretty certain it will take some time to fill the storage space. The keyboard is much easier for me to use. Not sure why, just personal preference, but I really do like the feel and the response. I have to say that Windows 8 takes a bit of getting used to and the new computer and I are working on this aspect of out relationship. This is not a touch screen laptop and I did not want one, but I'm sure there are many who would agree that a touch screen was the target for Windows 8. There are ways to make Windows 8 look and feel more like Windows 7 and I'm using the Desktop screen to help me adjust. So far, I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience.

All laptops i have bought till date where lenovo....Got this 5 months back.... already called their customer care 3 times.. waste of time... issues never get resolved...

Issues

mouse pad is not fit for use cursor keeps moving without touching hardware issue

Wifi turns off automatically and no option to turn on wifi in hardware or software

Both these issues could not be resolved by their customer care. They even restored my system.

Today the monitor does not display any content and just displays 2d gibberish and hangs.

Must be one of the worst laptops ever to have been sold.... I have regretted every minute having this... now they are going to service it...

Save your money and buy something reliable.

In the 3 weeks we've had his machine we have identified some nice features; a bright, sharp display and lighted keyboard particularly. Also good battery life and light weight. However, the unit I received has several glaring defects. The first was a complete lack of instructions and much installed bloat ware. It is unknown how much of this is due to Windows 8 and how much due to Lenovo, but it took many hours to finally locate a rudimentary tutorial to help navigate the main features of Windows 8, including how to remove the bloat ware. It took more research to find a program that would restore the Start button. Specific Lenovo problems were an almost impossible-to-use touchpad and weak reception of WiFi signals. The touchpad response had to be slowed considerably before choices could be made fairly safely; otherwise wrong selections occurred frequently. Two finger scrolling quit after a week or so, possibly because of an inadvertent operation that has yet to be revealed. This computer replaces a 7-year-old laptop that had much better WiFi performance with a 1-2 bar signal strength. Running this machine on the type 802.11g band at 2 bars results in frequent dropouts due to timeouts. I was unable to download a large file for supporting our 3-1 printer until the Lenovo was positioned next to the router. Behavior on the n-band seems even worse. We have no 2.2 GHz interfering signal sources in the house (except a microwave), and most neighboring stray WiFi signals are n-band.

This machine is not for the faint of heart.
